Assessment of ecological risks in weed biocontrol: Input from retrospective ecological analyses 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Prediction of the outcomes of natural enemy introductions remains the most fundamental challenge in biological control. Quantitative retrospective analyses of ongoing biocontrol projects provide a systematic strategy to evaluate and further develop ecological risk assessment. In this review, we highlight a crucial assumption underlying a continued reliance on the host specificity paradigm as a quantitative prediction of ecological risk, summarize the status of our retrospective analyses of nontarget effects of two weevils used against exotic thistles in North America, and discuss our prospective assessment of risk to a federally listed, threatened species (Cirsium pitcheri) based on those studies. Our analyses quantify the fact that host range and preference from host specificity tests are not sufficient to predict ecological impact if the introduced natural enemy is not strictly monophagous. The implicit assumption when such use is made of the host specificity data in risk assessment is that population impacts are proportional to relative preference and performance, the key components of host specificity. However, in concert with shifting awareness in the field, our studies demonstrate that the environment influences and can alter host use and population growth, leading to higher than expected direct impacts on the less preferred native host species at several spatial scales. Further, we have found that straightforward, easily anticipated indirect effects, on intraguild foragers as well as on the less preferred native host plant species, can be both widespread and significant. We conclude that intensive retrospective ecological studies provide some guidance for the quantitative prospective studies needed to assess candidate biological control agent dynamics and impacts and, so, contribute to improved rigor in the evaluation of total ecological risk to native species. 相似文献

Many national schemes for setting priorities for invasive weed management have emphasized the current or future impacts of the weed more than the cost or feasibility of control, perhaps because the latter may be difficult to estimate. As part of a project to improve prioritization of weed biocontrol targets in New Zealand, we investigated factors that were hypothesized to influence the cost of conducting weed biological control, using data from New Zealand programs. Taxonomic isolation of the target weed, relative to commercially important plants and native flora was not a significant influence on program cost, although we present evidence that disease, which to date has only affected agents released against taxonomically isolated weed targets, has masked the importance of taxonomic isolation in New Zealand. Opposition to biocontrol has caused delays, but has not had a major influence on the cost of biocontrol in New Zealand, probably because weed species with the greatest potential for opposition were identified during feasibility studies and avoided, or because conflicts were resolved by conducting cost-benefit analyses that were minor components of the total program costs. Only two factors explained virtually all the variance in program cost: program type (repeat programs were cheaper than novel/pioneering programs); and the number of agent species released. The predicted cost of future weed biocontrol programs can now be incorporated into decision-making tools ranking New Zealand weed biocontrol targets. Efficiencies in future programs are most likely to be gained by better agent selection so that fewer agents are released. For repeat programs this could be achieved by waiting until monitoring has been conducted overseas, so that the best agents or combination of agents can be selected for any particular weed. This reiterates the need for better post-release evaluation of weed biocontrol agent effectiveness worldwide. 相似文献

Seed bank formation plays an important role in plant population dynamics. However, buried seeds face several mortality factors, including the decay caused by microbial activity. Recent seed burial studies involving both fungicide-treated seeds and untreated seeds provide evidence for the importance of saprophytic soil fungi as a seed mortality factor. In this review, we summarize the available evidence. We discuss the influence of abiotic and biotic environmental factors, the specificity of plant-fungal associations at the seed level and mechanisms of resistance to seed decay. Finally, we discuss implications for plant communities and for the biocontrol of agricultural weeds. 相似文献

The leaf-feeding beetle Zygogrammabicolorata Pallister was introduced from Mexico intoAustralia in 1980 as a biocontrol agent for the weedParthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae). Z. bicolorata became abundant in 1990, and since 1992there has been regular outbreaks resulting in thedefoliation of the weed in central Queensland. In thisstudy we evaluated the impact of defoliation by Z. bicolorata on P. hysterophorus from 1996 to1998. Z. bicolorata caused 91–100% defoliationresulting in reductions in weed density by 32–93%,plant height by 18–65%, plant biomass by 55–89%,flower production by 75–100%, soil seed-bank by13–86% and seedling emergence in the following seasonby 73–90%. At sites with continued outbreaks ofZ. bicolorata, it is expected that the existing soilseed-bank will be minimised, resulting in reduceddensity of parthenium in 6 to 7 years. 相似文献

This study shows that individual behavioral variation is an under-recognised source of error that may affect the outcome of host range tests in a stenophagous species. Original specificity testing of the broom seed beetle, Bruchidius villosus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), a biocontrol agent for Scotch broom, Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link (Fabaceae: Genisteae), failed to detect its ability to oviposit in the field on a congeneric non-target plant, the exotic Cytisus proliferus L.f. (Fabaceae: Genisteae). These tests were repeated using individual beetles from the original UK collection sites and from New Zealand, 15 generations post release. In the original tests, low replication of small batches of females masked high levels of individual variation in oviposition preference. Although most beetles showed strong preference for the target weed, there was some indication that New Zealand beetles showed higher preference for the non-target than UK beetles. 相似文献

In the regulatory process, the hazards posed by potentially toxic agents to the female and male reproductive systems and to developing young are evaluated by risk assessment procedures. In this paper, toxicity testing and the regulatory process are discussed, with emphasis on risk assessment. The suggested testing protocols of the Pesticide Assessment Guidelines (U.S. EPA) are presented as an example of testing that might be done to produce toxicity data for an agent. Protocols and end points that are utilized in testing for reproductive effects are described. Included are acute, subchronic, chronic, and short-term tests. The four components of reproductive risk assessment (hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization) are examined. Effects of dibromochloropropane on rabbit testicular parameters are used to demonstrate approaches that could be taken in doing a reproductive risk assessment. Research needs for screening methods, adequate dose-response testing, toxicokinetics, end point development, and extrapolation methods are identified. Finally, this paper discusses selected areas in which changes in reproductive risk assessment are anticipated, as well as the mechanism for influencing the nature and extent of those changes. 相似文献

Ecologists and biogeographers usually rely on a single phylogenetic tree to study evolutionary processes that affect macroecological patterns. This approach ignores the fact that each phylogenetic tree is a hypothesis about the evolutionary history of a clade, and cannot be directly observed in nature. Also, trees often leave out many extant species, or include missing species as polytomies because of a lack of information on the relationship among taxa. Still, researchers usually do not quantify the effects of phylogenetic uncertainty in ecological analyses. We propose here a novel analytical strategy to maximize the use of incomplete phylogenetic information, while simultaneously accounting for several sources of phylogenetic uncertainty that may distort statistical inferences about evolutionary processes. We illustrate the approach using a clade‐wide analysis of the hummingbirds, evaluating how different sources of uncertainty affect several phylogenetic comparative analyses of trait evolution and biogeographic patterns. Although no statistical approximation can fully substitute for a complete and robust phylogeny, the method we describe and illustrate enables researchers to broaden the number of clades for which studies informed by evolutionary relationships are possible, while allowing the estimation and control of statistical error that arises from phylogenetic uncertainty. Biotechnologies have been utilized "ante litteram" for thousands of years to produce food and drink and genetic engineering techniques have been widely applied to produce many compounds for human use, from insulin to other medicines. The debate on genetically modified (GM) organisms broke out all over the world only when GM crops were released into the field. Plant ecologists, microbiologists and population geneticists carried out experiments aimed at evaluating the environmental impact of GM crops. The most significant findings concern: the spread of transgenes through GM pollen diffusion and its environmental impact after hybridisation with closely related wild species or subspecies; horizontal gene transfer from transgenic plants to soil microbes; the impact of insecticide proteins released into the soil by transformed plants on non-target microbial soil communities. Recent developments in genetic engineering produced a technology, dubbed "Terminator", which protects patented genes introduced in transgenic plants by killing the seeds in the second generation. This genetic construct, which interferes so heavily with fundamental life processes, is considered dangerous and should be ex-ante evaluated taking into account the data on "unexpected events", as here discussed, instead of relying on the "safe until proven otherwise" claim. Awareness that scientists, biotechnologists and genetic engineers cannot answer the fundamental question "how likely is that transgenes will be transferred from cultivated plants into the natural environment?" should foster long-term studies on the ecological risks and benefits of transgenic crops. 相似文献

AbstractIncreasing levels of heavy metals in soil have become a serious concern for human health because they can be easily transferred into the human body through contaminated food web. It is imperative to evaluate pollution levels, origin and ecological risks of heavy metals. The geoaccumaualtion (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI) and human health risk were estimated to determine the soil pollution in Faisalabad, a heavily-populated and industrialized city of Pakistan. The maximum CF (1.58) and PLI (1.22) values were estimated for Cd and Pb, respectively, and maximum Igeo (?0.19) value was observed for Cd. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis suggested that common industrial sources for Cd and Pb were identified in the study sites. It clearly indicates that the significant levels of heavy metals pollution arise from local industries, busy commercial centers and heavy traffic load in the last few decades in heavily-populated and industrialized city. Further, soil heavy metals concentration were used to evaluate the human health risk such as chronic or non-carcinogenic including hazard indexes HIexP (ingestion, inhalation and dermal and carcinogenic) and cancer risk (CR). The HIexP values of Pb (10.30) and Cd (4.56) were found above the permissible limit (HI = 1) for children. The CR due to carcinogenic metals (Co, Cr and Cd) are within the safe limit (1E-06 to 1E-04). However, CR was comparatively higher in adults as compared to children. The results from the current investigation can help to develop a sustainable strategy in the study region to minimize the entry of heavy metals in food chain through source identification and pollution abatement techniques. 相似文献

Assessment of possible ecological risks and hazards of transgenic fish with implications for other sexually reproducing organisms 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Transgenic technology is developing rapidly; however, consumers and environmentalists remain wary of its safety for use in agriculture. Research is needed to ensure the safe use of transgenic technology and thus increase consumer confidence. This goal is best accomplished by using a thorough, unbiased examination of risks associated with agricultural biotechnology. In this paper, we review discussion on risk and extend our approach to predict risk. We also distinguish between the risk and hazard of transgenic organisms in natural environments. We define transgene risk as the probability a transgene will spread into natural conspecific populations and define hazard as the probability of species extinction, displacement, or ecosystem disruption given that the transgene has spread. Our methods primarily address risk relative to two types of hazards: extinction which has a high hazard, and invasion which has an unknown level of hazard, similar to that of an introduced exotic species. Our method of risk assessment is unique in that we concentrate on the six major fitness components of an organism's life cycle to determine if transgenic individuals differ in survival or reproductive capacity from wild type. Our approach then combines estimates of the net fitness parameters into a mathematical model to determine the fate of the transgene and the affected wild population. We also review aspects of fish ecology and behavior that contribute to risk and examine combinations of net fitness parameters which can lead to invasion and extinction hazards. We describe three new ways that a transgene could result in an extinction hazard: (1) when the transgene increases male mating success but reduces daily adult viability, (2) when the transgene increases adult viability but reduces male fertility, and (3) when the transgene increases both male mating success and adult viability but reduces male fertility. The last scenario is predicted to cause rapid extinction, thus it poses an extreme risk. Although we limit our discussion to aquacultural applications, our methods can easily be adapted to other sexually reproducing organisms with suitable adjustments of terminology. 相似文献

Two Commelinaceae weeds, Commelina benghalensis L. and Murdannia nudiflora (L.) Brenan, are abundant in rice fields of India. Larvae and adults of Lema praeusta (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) voraciously consume these two weeds. Synthetic herbicides are applied to control both weeds, but applications of these substances have harmful effects in environment and beneficial organisms. So, it is necessary to use native biocontrol agent to control these weeds. Hence, an attempt has been made to find volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from both weeds causing attraction of L. praeusta. Behavioural responses of L. praeusta towards volatile blends from undamaged (UD), insect-damaged (ID: plants after 6 or 48 hr of continuous insect feeding) and mechanically damaged (MD) plants were conducted by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Benzyl alcohol was predominant in VOCs of UD plants and M. nudiflora after 48 hr of insect feeding. Benzyl alcohol and cuminaldehyde were both predominant in VOCs of C. benghalensis after 48 hr of insect feeding. Females were more attracted towards volatile blends from plants after 48 hr of insect feeding compared to undamaged plants. Females showed attraction towards a synthetic blend of seven compounds—7.28 µg (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, 0.93 µg trans-isolimonene, 19.18 µg benzyl alcohol, 0.16 µg undecane, 1.07 µg 1-nonanol, 1.23 µg 1-undecanol and 0.47 µg 1-eicosene resembling the amounts released by C. benghalensis after 48 hr of insect feeding during 1 hr or a synthetic blend of six compounds—18.10 µg benzyl alcohol, 0.25 µg undecane, 0.56 µg 1-nonanol, 1.37 µg 1-undecanol, 0.35 µg 1-eicosene and 2.19 µg phytol resembling the amounts released by M. nudiflora after 48 hr of insect feeding during 1 hr. This study concludes that both blends could be used to attract the biocontrol agent during early vegetative period of these two weeds, which could lead to eradication of weeds from rice fields. 相似文献

This paper reviews five case studies from the states of Oregon and Washington, USA, where agencies and tribes have implemented
or proposed programs that were intended to reduce ecological risks due to hatchery programs. The case studies are for Oregon
coho salmon, Select Area terminal fisheries programs for Chinook and coho salmon in the lower Columbia River, Hood Canal chum
salmon in Puget Sound Washington, Siletz River steelhead on the Oregon coast, and Okanogan River Chinook salmon in eastern
Washington. The five case studies address a diversity of management objectives and species. They demonstrate some of the science
and risk reduction strategies used to alleviate the ecological effects of hatcheries, and they document some of the results
and outcomes of taking action. Elements of four of the case studies have been in place for nearly 20 years. The available
science and the conservation ethic toward hatchery programs evolved significantly over this period, and management decisions
and strategies have been influenced by public policy as well as by scientific information. Therefore the case studies also
document some of the history, the evolution of ideas, the uncertainty, and the political controversy associated with the management

Detection of the biocontrol agent Colletotrichum coccodes (183088) from the target weed velvetleaf and from soil by strain-specific PCR markers 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Diagnostic molecular markers, generated from random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and used in polymerase chain reaction (PCR), were developed to selectively recognize and detect the presence of a single strain of the biocontrol fungus Colletotrichum coccodes (183088) on the target weed species Abutilon theophrasti and from soil samples. Several isolates of C. coccodes, 15 species of Colletotrichum, a variety of heterogeneous organisms and various plant species were first screened by RAPD-PCR, and a strain specific marker was identified for C. coccodes (183088). No significant sequence similarity was found between this marker and any other sequences in the databases. The marker was converted into a sequence-characterised amplified region (SCAR), and specific primer sets (N5F/N5R, N5Fi/N5Ri) were designed for use in PCR detection assays. The primer sets N5F/N5R and N5Fi/N5Ri each amplified a single product of 617 and 380 bp, respectively, with DNA isolated from strain 183088. The specificity of the primers was confirmed by the absence of amplified products with DNA from other C. coccodes isolates, other species representing 15 phylogenetic groups of the genus Colletotrichum and 11 other organisms. The SCAR primers (N5F/N5R) were successfully used to detect strain 183088 from infected velvetleaf plants but not from seeded greenhouse soil substrate or from soil samples originating from deliberate-released field experiments. The sensitivity of the assay was substantially increased 1000-fold when nested primers (N5Fi/N5Ri) were used in a second PCR run. N5Fi/N5Ri selectively detected strain 183088 from seeded greenhouse soils as well as from deliberate-released field soil samples without any cross-amplification with other soil microorganisms. This rapid PCR assay allows an accurate detection of C. coccodes strain 183088 among a background of soil microorganisms and will be useful for monitoring the biocontrol when released into natural field soils. 相似文献

探索如何在利用和控制农田杂草的同时又能维持较高的杂草群落多样性的生产方式, 是当前农业发展的重要方向。作者以“农牧一体化”生产方式下的“玉米(Zea mays)田养鹅”处理和常规玉米种植处理为研究对象, 探讨了玉米田养鹅处理放牧前后及同期常规玉米种植处理下杂草生态位、功能群结构和杂草群落生物多样性的变化。结果表明: (1)在玉米田养鹅模式下, 黑麦草(Lolium multiflorum)、紫花苜蓿(Medicago sativa)和灰绿藜(Chenopodium glaucum)在放牧前的生态位宽度较大, 但放牧后黑麦草、紫花苜蓿的生态位宽度减小, 而灰绿藜、尼泊尔蓼(Polygonum nepalense)、西南草莓(Fragaria moupinensis)和老鹳草(Geranium sibiricum)等物种的生态位宽度则有不同程度的增大, 放牧后群落内新增加了7种杂草; 对照中, 前期丝叶球柱草(Bulbostylis densa)的生态位宽度最大, 而后期鼠麹草(Gnaphalium affine)的生态位宽度变为最大, 新增2种杂草。(2)放牧前玉米田养鹅处理下的黑麦草和紫花苜蓿的重叠度最大, 而放牧后黑麦草和西南草莓的重叠度变为最大; 在常规玉米种植模式下, 前期丝叶球柱草和马唐(Digitaria sanguinalis)的重叠度最高, 而后期丝叶球柱草和鼠麹草的重叠度最高。(3)两种模式下放牧前后均是一年生双子叶(DA)杂草功能群占据最大优势, 但玉米田养鹅处理模式下放牧后多年生功能类群所占的比例较放牧前增加, 且分配更均匀。(4)放牧前, 玉米田养鹅处理的Shannon-Wiener多样性指数、Margalef物种丰富度指数和Simpson多样性指数均高于对照, 其中Shannon-Wiener多样性指数和Margalef物种丰富度指数差异显著(P<0.05, n=3), 而Pielou均匀度指数低于对照, 但差异并不显著(P>0.05, n=3); 放牧后玉米田养鹅处理的Shannon-Wiener多样性指数和Margalef物种丰富度指数仍显著高于对照(P<0.05, n=3), 而Pielou均匀度指数和Simpson多样性指数则分别显著低于对照 (P<0.05, n=3)。放牧前后, 玉米田养鹅处理杂草群落的地上总生物量均高于对照, 但差异不显著(P>0.05, n=3)。(5)玉米田养鹅处理的玉米产量与对照相比减产4.0%, 但并未达到显著差异(P>0.05, n=12)。总的来看, 玉米田养鹅生产方式维持了较高的农田生态系统生物多样性, 虽然造成了一定的减产, 但可通过鹅的产出获得更高的经济效益。 相似文献

Meta‐analysis is an important tool for synthesizing research on a variety of topics in ecology and evolution, including molecular ecology, but can be susceptible to nonindependence. Nonindependence can affect two major interrelated components of a meta‐analysis: (i) the calculation of effect size statistics and (ii) the estimation of overall meta‐analytic estimates and their uncertainty. While some solutions to nonindependence exist at the statistical analysis stages, there is little advice on what to do when complex analyses are not possible, or when studies with nonindependent experimental designs exist in the data. Here we argue that exploring the effects of procedural decisions in a meta‐analysis (e.g. inclusion of different quality data, choice of effect size) and statistical assumptions (e.g. assuming no phylogenetic covariance) using sensitivity analyses are extremely important in assessing the impact of nonindependence. Sensitivity analyses can provide greater confidence in results and highlight important limitations of empirical work (e.g. impact of study design on overall effects). Despite their importance, sensitivity analyses are seldom applied to problems of nonindependence. To encourage better practice for dealing with nonindependence in meta‐analytic studies, we present accessible examples demonstrating the impact that ignoring nonindependence can have on meta‐analytic estimates. We also provide pragmatic solutions for dealing with nonindependent study designs, and for analysing dependent effect sizes. Additionally, we offer reporting guidelines that will facilitate disclosure of the sources of nonindependence in meta‐analyses, leading to greater transparency and more robust conclusions. 相似文献

Abstract In weed biocontrol, similarity of abiotic factors between the native and introduced range of a biocontrol agent is critical to its establishment and effectiveness. This is particularly the case for weeds that have a wide geographical distribution in the native range. For such weeds, the choice of a specialist insect that has narrow tolerance limits to important abiotic factors can diminish its ability to be an effective biocontrol agent. The membracid Aconophora compressa was introduced in Australia from Mexico for biocontrol of Lantana camara , a plant with a wide climatic tolerance. In this study we investigated the effect of constant and alternating temperatures on A. compressa survival. Longevity of adults and nymphs declined with increasing temperatures, and at 39°C individuals survived for less than a day. At lower temperatures, nymphs survived longer than adults. Survival at alternating temperatures was longer than at constant temperatures, but the general trend of lower survival at higher temperatures remained. Spatially and temporally, the climatic tolerance of A. compressa appears to be a subset of that of lantana, thereby limiting its potential impact. 相似文献
