The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of genotype and the dietary fibre concentration in the chemical composition and physical properties of lamb meat. Samples from 54 animals from Morada Nova and Santa Inês native breeds and Dorpper × Santa Inês half-breed were analyzed, which received two diets, one with 41.7% and another with 33.6% fibre content, until reaching the average slaughter weight of 30 kg. The design used was fully randomized 3 × 2 factorial, three genotypes and two diets with nine replicates. Colour and pH in Semimembranosus muscle were determined, together with the analyses of the water retention capacity, loss of weight due to cooking, shearing force, and chemical composition in Longissimus dorsi muscle. The factor genotype influenced the chemical composition of meat, with Santa Inês lamb and crossbreed showing the highest protein percentages. The diet with 33.6% fibre content provided meat with higher moisture percentage and lower protein value, and the loss of weight due to cooking and shearing force parameters did not interfere in other variables. In addition, lambs receiving higher fibre content diet produced meat with lower shear force values, having indicated to be more tenderness. Despite these variations, the meat of lambs from all genotypes and under the diets evaluated can be considered of good quality.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of multiple stress factors (thermal, nutritional and pregnancy type) on two different native track breeds of ewes as reflected by their adaptive capability under semi-arid environment. The multiple stressor experiment was conducted in twenty-four ewes (12 Santa Inês and 12 Morada Nova ewes). Both heat stress and pregnancy stress was common to all four groups. However, the animals were divided into further two groups within each breed on the basis of nutrition regimen. According the groupings were: Group 1 (Six Santa Ines ewes; heat stress; nutrition at 0.5% of BW; single pregnancy); Group 2 (Six Santa Ines ewes; heat stress; nutrition at 1.5% BW; twin pregnancy); groups Group 3 (Six Morada Nova ewes; heat stress; nutrition at 0.5% of BW; single pregnancy); Group 4 (Six Morada Nova ewes; heat stress; nutrition at 1.5% BW; twin pregnancy). All the animals in the experiment were pregnant. Heat stress was induced by exposing all animals to summer heat stress in outside environment while the nutritional regimen followed was at 0.5% and 1.5% level of body weight (BW) respectively in each breed. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with two breeds, two nutritional treatments and two pregnancy types, 10 repetitions for physiological parameters and six for blood parameters, with repeated measures over time. Physiological parameters (respiratory rate, pulse rate and rectal temperature) were measured with the animals at rest in the morning and afternoon, 0600-0700 and 1300–1400 h, respectively, every seven days. Blood samples were collected every 14 d for determination of serum glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, urea and creatinine. We found interaction effect between breed and pregnancy type on respiratory rate and rectal temperature with greater values in Santa Inês ewes than Morada Nova ewes. However, there was no significant fixed effect of pregnancy type and supplementation level on physiological responses of breeds. Environmental factor (period of the day) had influenced the physiological responses of ewes during all gestational period. Santa Inês ewes had greater serum glucose concentration at 105 d and 120 d of gestation compared to the Morada Nova ewes. Morada Nova ewes had greater concentrations of triglycerides, urea at 120 d, 150 d and also greater cholesterol at 105 d, 135 d and 150 d of gestation compared with Santa Inês ewes. The present result indicates that thermal condition was most important factor that modified the physiological responses of ewes in a semi-arid tropical environment.  相似文献

Protein requirements of Texel crossbred lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A comparative slaughter trial was conducted to determine the protein requirements for maintenance and growth of feedlot Texel crossbred lambs. Thirty 11/16 Texel × 5/16 Ile de France crossbred noncastrated male lambs weaned at 42 days of age (16.2 ± 2.1 kg of shrunk body weight; SBW) were used. Five lambs were chosen randomly and slaughtered after 10 days of experimental management and diet adaptation (baseline group). Fifteen lambs were fed ad libitum and slaughtered at 25, 30 or 35 kg of SBW. The remaining 10 lambs were then assigned randomly to two levels of dry matter intake, either 70 or 55% of the ad libitum intake, and were slaughtered concomitantly with lambs slaughtered at 35 kg of SBW but given free choice access to feed. Total body N content and retention were determined. Additionally, six Texel × Ile de France crossbred lambs (30.4 ± 2.6 kg of SBW) housed in individual metabolic cages were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square digestibility trial to evaluate diet digestibility and microbial protein synthesis at the different levels of feed intake. The endogenous N loss was 243 ± 29 mg/kg0.75 of SBW, corresponding to a net protein requirement for maintenance of 1.52 ± 0.18 g/kg0.75 of SBW. The metabolizable protein (MP) requirement for maintenance was 2.31 g/kg0.75 of SBW, and the efficiency of MP use for maintenance was 0.66. Fleece-free body protein content decreased from 163 to 155 g/kg of empty body weight (EBW) as EBW increased from 13 to 28 kg. However, when protein in fleece was considered the whole-body protein content remained nearly constant. Net protein requirements for body weight gain and wool growth of lambs at 15 and 35 kg of SBW, and an average daily gain of 250 g, were 28.7 and 27.3 g/day and 3.8 and 5.8 g/day, respectively. Estimated efficiencies of MP use for body weight gain (kpg) and wool growth (kpw) were, respectively, 0.71 and 0.46. Growth pattern of the wool has a high influence on protein requirements of lambs. Texel crossbred growing lambs used in our study showed protein requirements for growth lower than those reported by the most nutritional systems.  相似文献

Kinetics modelling was used to study the effects of different dietary phosphorus (P) levels on P metabolism in young sheep. An experiment was conducted with 12 Santa Inês lambs receiving a basal diet of a hay-concentrate mixture. Different amounts of dicalcium phosphate were added to the basal diet, to give the following treatments levels of 0, 1.5, 3 and 4.5 g/animal/day. The isotopic dilution technique (32P) was used for analyze four compartments: gastrointestinal tract, plasma, bone and soft tissues (liver, heart, kidney and muscle), as well as nutrient flows between them. All P flows showed a positive linear or exponential relationship with P intake. Both incorporation and reabsorption in bone and soft tissue increased with increasing P levels in the diet, with positive retention above 3 g/day. On the 4.5g P/day treatment, reduced P absorption and increased P in the faeces from dietary origin was noted. Three g/day of P treatment was sufficient to meet soft tissue requirements for young sheep.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and nutrient digestibility of feedlot Santa Inês sheep fed with increasing levels (0, 25, 50, 75, 100% dry matter basis) of cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica, Mill) as a replacement for corn. Forty-five male (non-castrated) Santa Inês sheep, averaging 27.50 ± 0.48 kg body weight (BW) at the beginning of the study, were used in this trial. A completely randomized block design with nine replicates per treatment was used. The intakes of DM, OM, CP, EE, TC, NFC, TDN and ME were quadratic, while the intakes of mineral matter (MM) and NDF increased linearly with increased levels of cactus pear in the diet. The voluntary intake of water decreased with increased levels of cactus pear in the diet. Increased levels of cactus pear in the diet increased the apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF, and TC linearly, but did not influence the digestibility of EE or NFC. Daily weight gain (DWG) and feed efficiency decreased linearly with increased levels of cactus pear in the diet. The replacement of corn by cactus pear does not affect the conversion of the feed. Overall, increased levels of cactus pear in the diet of these sheep favours a high digestibility of nutrients, improves the quality of forage, reduces the voluntary intake of water, and thus represents an important source of fodder and water reserves for use in semiarid regions.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted for 90 d to assess the effect of feeding graded levels of concentrate allowance on rumen fermentation characteristics, performance and nutrient utilisation of weaner lambs on restricted or high concentrate allowance using 60 weaner lambs of initial average live weight of 13.90 kg BW in a randomized design. The experimental treatments were 15 or 25 g kg−1 BW or ad libitum concentrate allowance. Roughage source which contained Khejri (Prosopis cineratia) and Siris (Albizia lebback) leaves in 50:50 ratio was offered ad libitum to all the animals. Lambs supplemented with 15 g or ad libitum concentrate had similar dry matter intake (4.2 kg/100 kg BW) but significantly (p < 0.01) lower than 25 g concentrate supplemented group (4.9 kg/100 kg BW). Organic matter and CP intakes increased with increasing concentrate supplementation. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, CP, NDF, ADF and cellulose were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in ad libitum concentrate supplemented than 15 and 25 g concentrate supplemented lambs. Daily ME intake was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in 25 g and ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs while ME intake kg−1 gain was lower in ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs (57 MJ kg−1 gain) than those supplemented with 15 or 25 g concentrate (91 MJ kg−1 gain). Generally, average daily gain increased with increasing levels of concentrate supplementation. Ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs had significantly (p < 0.01) higher daily gains (151 g) than 15 and 25 g concentrate supplemented lambs (77 and 98 g, respectively). Feed efficiency was similar for 15 and 25 g concentrate supplemented lambs but significantly (p < 0.01) lower than the ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs. All animals were in positive N-balance and the N-balance increased with increasing concentrate supplementation. Mean rumen fluid pH was significantly (6.6, p < 0.01) lower in ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs compared to 15 or 25 g concentrate fed lambs (6.9). Rumen NH3-N and total-N-concentrations peaked at 3 h post-feeding. Optimum rumen fluid pH, better nutrient digestibilities, higher N-retention improved growth by 49% of ad libitum concentrate fed lambs.  相似文献

This study investigated effects of feeding three individual, and a mixed, yeast culture (Kluyveromyces marximanus NRRL3234, Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCDC42, Saccharomyces uvarum ATCC9080 all in a 1:1:1, ratio) on growth performance, nutrient utilization and microbial crude protein (CP) synthesis in feedlot lambs during the post-weaning phase of growth. Sixty weaner lambs (90 ± 3.5 d old and 15.9 ± 0.50 kg BW) were fed for 91 d in five equal groups. The control group of lambs received sterilized culture medium while the treatment groups were fed a yeast culture in addition to a ad libitum total mixed ration (TMR). The yeast culture, dosed at 1 ml/kg body weight (BW) had 1.5–2.0 × 109 live cells/ml. Yeast culture supplementation did not influence intake and digestibility of organic matter (OM), CP, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and hemicellulose and the metabolizable energy (ME) level of the diets were similar between control and yeast supplemented lambs. Lambs in all groups were in positive N balance, but N intake and N voided in feces and urine, as well as N balance, did not change due to yeast culture supplementation. Urinary allantoin excretion was similar, but purine derivatives absorbed (mM/d) were higher (P<0.05) in yeast culture supplemented lambs. Yeast culture supplementation improved (P<0.05) microbial CP synthesis. Supplementation of SC and mixed yeast improved (P=0.002) BW gain of lambs by 21% and 16% respectively. All yeast culture supplemented lambs had higher feed efficiency in comparison to control lambs. Among the three yeast cultures used, S. cerevisiae had the most potential as a growth promoting feed additive in feedlot lamb production, and it may serve as an alternate to antibiotics and ionophores as a growth promoter of weaner lambs.  相似文献

The Santa Inês, a Brazilian hair sheep, has a non-seasonal breeding activity. Data regarding the duration of the postpartum anestrous period in Santa Inês lactating ewes is lacking and the objective of this trial was to determine the effects of replacing neutral detergent fibre (NDF) provided by coastcross (Cynodon sp.) hay with NDF contained in soybean hulls (SH) on the postpartum ovarian activity—as measured by the serum progesterone (P4) concentration. Fifty-six lactating ewes (body weight 56.1 ± 6.8 kg) were individually penned and used in a randomized complete block design with 14 blocks and four treatments. The SH NDF replaced 33 (SH33), 67 (SH67), or 100% (SH100) of the NDF contributed by coastcross hay in the control diet (SH0). This resulted in a SH inclusion at rates of 0, 25, 54, and 85% of the dietary dry matter (DM). Blood samples were collected twice weekly from the 14th to 84th day postpartum and the serum P4 concentrations determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). It was estimated that the 1st postpartum ovulation occurred 6 days before the date that a serum P4  1 ng/ml concentration was first recorded. The mean body condition score (BCS; 0–5 scale) was 3.0 ± 0.19 on day 14 postpartum and the mean BCS at day 56 postpartum increased linearly (P < 0.01) with the inclusion levels of SH (3.09, 3.24, 3.34, and 3.36, respectively). Treatments did not differ significantly in the induction of postpartum days to the resumption of ovarian luteal activity (34.1 ± 15.3 days postpartum). On days 25, 50, and 75 postpartum 36, 80, and 100% of the ewes had resumed ovarian activity, respectively. Non-esterified fatty acid concentration decreased quadratically (P < 0.05) with the SH inclusion, with values of 0.323, 0.244, 0.204, and 0.216 mequiv./l for the SH0, SH33, SH67, and SH100 treatments being recorded, respectively. Replacement of the NDF provided by coastcross hay with the NDF from the SH did not influence the duration of the postpartum anestrous period in Santa Inês lactating ewes. Considering a 150-day gestation period and the 34 days postpartum anestrous demonstrated in the present study, the current production system of a lambing interval of 8 months (3 lambing events in 2 years) may not be optimizing the production potential and a system in which the lambing interval is shortened by at least 1 month may be feasible.  相似文献

The influence of whole, crushed and ground barley and oats on intake, performance and carcass characteristics of lambs was examined. A comparison of diets was conducted with individually-fed male and female lambs in six groups. The study was repeated in three successive years (1995–1997) using the same experimental design. A total of 192 lambs of a mean initial age of 74 days (SD 13.0) and live weight 20.6 kg (SD 4.54) were daily fed their respective concentrates, 72 g dry matter (DM)/kg metabolic live weight (kgW0.75), for 98 days from weaning to slaughter. Hay was provided ad libitum. The lambs adapted more quickly to diets containing barley than to those containing oats. Compared to oats, the total daily DM intake was higher on barley (1162 vs. 990 g DM/lamb, 89 vs. 78 g DM/kgW0.75, P < 0.001). Hay consumption was significantly lower on oats than on barley (182 vs. 344 g DM/day, P < 0.001). On oats the lambs experienced energy and protein deficiencies with their energy and protein intakes being 20% below feeding recommendations. On the barley diets the energy and protein requirements of the lambs were satisfied. When processed cereals were offered, there was no increase in the total DM, energy or protein intakes. Processing did not improve the organic matter digestibility of barley or oats. The growth rate (P < 0.01), carcass weight (P < 0.001) and slaughter percentage (P < 0.001) were higher on a barley diet than on oats. A barley diet resulted in more kidney fat (P < 0.01) and fattier carcasses. Processing had no positive influence on the live weight gain. On the contrary, lambs receiving crushed or ground barley or oats had a lower final live weight than those receiving whole grains (P < 0.001). The utilisation of whole grain was more efficient than that of processed grain. There were no advantages in processing barley and oats for the feeding of lambs.  相似文献

Body weights, fecal egg counts (FEC), and packed cell volumes (PCV) of hair sheep and wool sheep crossbred lambs were compared over 8 weeks following administration of a single dose of approximately 10,000 third-stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Hair sheep lambs (n=17) were reciprocal crosses between mainland USA populations of Barbados Blackbelly (BB) and Virgin Islands White (VIW) sheep. Wool sheep lambs (n=64) were from a crossbred composite of 50% Dorset, 25% Rambouillet, and 25% Finnish Landrace breeding. Lambs of both breed types continued to grow during the period of infection. Mean weights were higher for wool lambs (39.7±0.8 kg) than for hair lambs (28.2±1.5 kg). FEC increased to week 5 in both breed groups and remained elevated in wool lambs through week 7 but declined sharply in hair lambs after week 5. Mean FEC for weeks 4 through 8 were 4011±361 eggs per gram of feces (epg) in wool lambs, and 1135±196 epg in hair lambs. PCV declined through week 7 in wool lambs but stabilized and then increased after week 4 in hair lambs. Mean PCV in weeks 4 through 8 were 22.4±0.3% in wool lambs and 24.3±0.5% in hair lambs. These results suggest that Caribbean hair breeds may be able to contribute significantly to development of parasite-resistant sheep populations.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 20 ewes of mixed breeding were fed grass hay : straw mixtures, assigned to one of four supplemental treatments and evaluated during six collection periods. Supplemental treatments were control (no supplement), and low, medium, and high levels (5.2%, 22.1%, and 41.3% of DM, respectively) of undegraded intake protein (UIP). Supplements were formulated to be similar in degraded intake protein (DIP; 21%). Digestibilities of DM, OM, and CP were increased (P < 0.10) with protein supplementation and in medium and high compared with low UIP supplemented ewes. Digestibility of CP also was increased (P < 0.10) in ewes on high compared with medium treatments. Serum insulin was not influenced (P > 0.10) by UIP treatment, except in collection period four. In contrast, serum glucose and growth hormone were not influenced (P > 0.10) by UIP treatment. In Exp. 2, four wether lambs fed the same treatments as in Exp. 1, were used in two 4 × 4 Latin squares trials. In trial 1 lambs received a grass hay diet (6.7% CP) and in trial 2 lambs were fed 40 : 60 blend (6.6% CP) of grass hay and spring wheat straw. In both trials, N intake, urinary N, N digestion, apparent N absorption, and N retention were increased (P < 0.10) with protein supplementation. In addition, in trial 1, urinary N, N digestion, and apparent N absorption were increased (P < 0.10) in medium and high compared with low UIP and also in high compared with medium UIP treatments. In trial 2 of Exp. 2, total feed intake (g/kg BW), digestibility of DM and OM, BW, and fecal N were increased (P < 0.10) with protein supplementation. Organic matter digestion, BW, N intake, and N retention were increased by medium and high compared with low UIP. Fecal N, BW, N intake, and N retention were increased (P < 0.10) in high compared with medium UIP. These data indicate that increasing levels of UIP supplementation increases DM, OM, and CP (N) digestibility, serum urea N concentration, and N retention in sheep fed low quality forage.  相似文献

The effects of increasing dietary levels of crude protein on growth, feed intake, feed efficiency and composition of gain in male Saanen kids were studied. Four groups of four kids each initially weighing 12.1±0.18 kg and having a weight gain of 195±16 g/d were penned individually and fed for 73 to 124 days up to 25 kg of BW. They were fed chaffed wheat straw (45 g CP/kg DM) which had been molasses sprayed (10%) and pelleted concentrates containing 8.7, 11.7, 14.4 and 17.6% crude protein (CP) on DM basis, the ratio of straw to concentrate being 1:5. Kids were fed controlled to satiation in which case small amounts of the feeds were offered about five times a day as long as the kids wanted to eat. Retention of protein, fat and energy were calculated from their initial and final concentrations in the empty body homogenates of the slaughtered kids. With increasing CP level in the diet, feed intake increased from 448 to 608 g DM/d, weight gain from 94 to 181 g/d, retention of protein from 9.7 to 27.8 g/d, retention of fat from 9.6 to 19.1 g/d and feed efficiency improved from 4.79 to 3.39 kg DM/kg weight gain. Protein composition of gain increased from 103 to 154 g/kg BWG while fat (103–105 g/kg BWG) remained constant. Regression analyses showed that BWG can be optimized at 136 g CP/kg DM and protein retention at 180 g CP/kg DM, whereas, dietary nitrogen was utilized most efficiently at 120 g CP/kg DM. Extrapolated from the regression equations, maintenance N requirement of the kids at zero N-retention and at zero BWG were 0.38 and 0.16 g N/kg W0.75, respectively. Recommended dietary CP concentrations and maintenance N requirements depend on the traits desired.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of two production systems (spring and winter), sex and birth type on growth performance in Norduz lambs. Data were collected using 103 and 140 lambs born during the winter and spring, respectively. Lambs born in the winter were heavier (P < 0.01) than those born in the spring at birth, 90 and 180 days of age by 0.5, 1.6 and 1.7 kg, respectively. Ram lambs were heavier (P < 0.01) than ewe lambs at birth, 90 and 180 days of age by 0.5, 1.0 and 2.3 kg, respectively, while lambs born as singles were heavier (P < 0.01) than lambs born as twins at birth, 90 and 180 days of age by 0.9, 1.6 and 2.3 kg, respectively. Lambs born in the winter recorded a higher (P < 0.01) pre-weaning ADG (15 g/day) than spring-born lambs, while ram lambs recorded a higher (P < 0.01) pre-weaning ADG (11 g/day) than ewe lambs. The effect of birth type was not significant on pre-weaning ADG. The influence of lambing season and sex were also not significant on post-weaning ADG. Lambs born as singles recorded a higher (P < 0.01) post-weaning ADG (16 g/day) than lambs born as twins. Results suggest the winter season to give rise to heavier lambs at weaning and post-weaning and suggest lambs born in different seasons to have distinctly different growth patterns. The data also confirm that the influence of sex and type of birth on growth to be very important and to be take into account sheep production.  相似文献

With the main objective of test an inoculum of chitin-degrading rumen bacteria, 15 lambs with an average BW of 22.8 kg were allotted at random (5 per treatment) to diets containing: T1 = soybean meal, corn meal and corn stover (control treatment), T2 = inclusion on the diet of 250 g of shrimp shell waste (SSW) per 1000 g (DM bases), in replacement of ingredients contained in T1, and T3 = T2 + inoculum made of Streptococcus milleri (chitin-degrading bacterium; 0.12 g animal−1 d−1). In general, the feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were similar (P<0.05) between T1 and T3, but the lambs feed SSW without inoculum (T2) presented the lowest values. Concentration of total and cellulolytic bacteria was similar among treatments after 30 d, but decreased in T2 and T3 after 60 d. The population of chitinolytic bacteria increased (P<0.05) in the rumen of lambs fed 25% SSW. This increment was observed in lambs feed with or without inoculum. It is concluded that SSW can be efficiently used as a feedstuff for ruminants without any requirement of an adaptation period to the diet and decreasing the diet cost, if an inoculum of chitinolytic bacteria is added.  相似文献

The harmful effects of the 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (l-dopa) in Mucuna pruriens (Velvet bean) seeds have limited its use as a protein supplement for monogastrics and humans. Little is known about the extent of metabolism of Mucuna l-dopa in ruminants or its accumulation in ruminant tissues consumed as food by humans. This study aimed to determine if replacing soybean meal (SB) with Mucuna increases concentrations of l-dopa in rumen fluid, blood and muscle tissue of lambs. Twenty-seven RM lambs (RM; initial body weight, BW = 33.8 ± 5.44 kg) and 12 Florida Native (FN; initial BW = 24.9 ± 8.63 kg) lambs were assigned to four treatments and fed a basal diet of coastal bermudagrass hay, corn grain, and liquid molasses for 42 (FN) or 49 days (RM) and then slaughtered. Dietary supplements were formulated by substituting 0 (SB), 330 (Lo), 670 (Med) or at least 1000 (Hi) g/kg of SB with rolled Mucuna seeds (l-dopa, 24 g/kg dry matter, DM). Body weight was measured weekly and carcass characteristics and concentrations of l-dopa in rumen fluid, blood and the sterno-mandibularis muscle were measured at slaughter when concentrations of blood urea N, glucose, haptoglobin and cerruloplasmin were also measured. Lambs fed SB had higher (P<0.05) average daily gain than those fed Mucuna (0.20 versus 0.15 kg/day for RM; 0.21 versus 0.14 kg/day for FN). However, concentrate protein source did not affect dressing and concentrations of blood urea N, or blood glucose. Feeding the Hi diet versus the SB diet did not increase concentrations of blood cerruloplasmin, or l-dopa or concentrations of l-dopa metabolites in blood. No l-dopa was found in the ruminal fluid of the lambs and l-dopa concentrations in the sterno-mandibularis muscle were low (i.e., <5 ng l-dopa/g), and unaffected (P>0.05) by diet. Ingested Mucuna l-dopa was extensively metabolized in lambs, and did not accumulate to toxic levels in muscle tissues.  相似文献

Effects of form of olive cake (OC) on growth performances and carcass quality were studied on forty-eight Awassi lambs. All lambs were male with an average body weight of 29.5 kg (S.D. = 2.3 kg) at the beginning of the experiment. Animals were randomly divided into four groups of 12 lambs each. Lambs in each group received individually corn–soybean meal (SBM) total mixed rations (TMRs). Rations were incorporated with a fixed amount (149 g/kg DM) of OC of different forms: crude OC, a product of the three centrifugation extraction procedure (control group), alkali treated, ensiled and pelleted. All rations were isonitrogenous and isocaloric. The growth experiment lasted 10 weeks. In the following week, all lambs were slaughtered. At termination of the experiment, lambs fed crude, alkali treated or ensiled OC rations consumed more feed and gained more weight (P<0.05) than those fed the pelleted OC. This same trend was found for the feed conversion (FC), carcass and empty body weights (EBWs). However, external (hide, head and feet, HHF) and thoracic organs (heart and lungs, HL), gut and liver weights proportional to EBW (g/kg) were not affected by the form of OC. The form of OC had no effects on muscle (P=0.4) and bone (P=0.21) tissues. Carcass, pelvic, kidney fats and total carcass fats weights when expressed as g/kg EBW and the percent of carcass fat of total body fat (TBF) were lower in lambs fed the pelleted OC compared to those offered the other forms of OC. However, the subcutaneous, inter muscular and TBF fats weights (g/kg) were comparable among lambs in different OC form rations. Results from this work suggest that the treated OC had no advantages compared to crude in regard to parameters investigated in this research.  相似文献

Mucuna pruriens seeds have relatively high crude protein (CP) concentrations, but little is known about their potential to replace commonly used CP supplements in ruminant rations. The aim of this experiment was to determine effects of replacing soybean meal (SB) with Mucuna on the performance of lambs. Forty Rambouillet lambs (33.2 ± 5.73 kg) fed a basal diet of maize grain, cottonseed hulls and urea were randomly assigned to one of four supplements formulated by substituting 0 (SB), 330 (Lo), 670 (Med) or 1000 g/kg (Hi) of soybean meal with rolled Mucuna seeds. Lambs were housed individually in metabolic crates and allowed ad libitum access to isocaloric (metabolizable energy=11.7 MJ/kg dry matter, DM) and isonitrogenous (CP = 146 g/kg, DM) diets for 14 d of adaptation and 7 d of total fecal collection. Fecal egg counts and coccidian oocyst scores were determined on d 14. Dry matter intake (1.7 kg/d versus 1.5 kg/d; P<0.05), CP digestibility (774 g/kg versus 714 g/kg DM; P<0.05) and N retention (28.0 g/d versus 20.4 g/d; P<0.01) were higher and amylase-pretreated neutral detergent fiber digestibility (617 g/kg versus 686 g/kg DM) was lower (P<0.05) in sheep fed SB versus Mucuna diets. However, supplementary protein source did not affect rumen pH, blood urea N or glucose concentration, or fecal egg counts. Increasing the level of Mucuna supplementation increased (P<0.05) level and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, ruminal fluid acidity, total volatile fatty acid concentration, decreased (P<0.05) coccidian oocyst scores, and tended (P<0.10) to increase N retention. Therefore, SB is a better supplement than Mucuna to support performance of lambs. Nevertheless, Mucuna seeds are a promising CP supplement for situations where cost or availability precludes use of SB in ruminant rations.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the changes in colostral production and composition in Karakul ewes fed at different nutritional levels. Pregnant ewes were randomly allotted to one of four groups (n = 20 per group) 90 days after artificial insemination. Three groups were fed with total mixed rations supplying 90, 100 and 110% of the NRC requirements, respectively, and the last group served as the control feeding on natural vegetations until parturition. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein during late pregnancy, and soon after lambing. Fifteen singleton ewes from each group were hand-milked completely at 1, 12 and 24 h post-lambing. Samples of colostrum were obtained and the lambs were fed with their ewe's colostrum (30 g/kg BW) at each milking. Blood samples were taken from the lambs before receiving their first colostrum, and again at 24 and 48 h post-lambing. Ewes on 110% NRC diet produced significantly (P < 0.01) more colostrum than did the ewes in other groups. Feeding level did not have a significant effect on the IgG level of the colostrums and blood sera of ewes and lambs. Mean IgG concentration in the ewe serum was greatest during late gestation (1–2 months before lambing) and were significantly reduced at 1 h post-lambing. Non-immunoglobulin composition of colostrum was not significantly affected by the treatment. There was a significant correlation between IgG levels of the ewe serum and colostrum (r = 0.64, P < 0.0001). Mean weight of the ewes on the control ration at lambing and the mean birth weight of their lambs were significantly lower as compared with other dietary groups. The results suggested that hand-feeding of Karakul ewes on poor rangeland vegetation with 110% NRC for 2 months before parturition increased colostral production, decreased the ewe loss and increased lamb birth weight which is beneficial to lamb survival.  相似文献

Fifteen Awassi lambs and 15 Baladi kids (males, averaging 14.3 kg) were used to study the differences in feeding behavior and performance of sheep and goats fed a concentrate finishing diet (CP = 16 kg/100 kg DM, ME = 2.85 Mcal/kg DM) in a complete randomized design experiment lasting 60 days. Dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) intakes were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in lambs. Kids had higher (P < 0.05) apparent OM, crude protein (CP) and gross energy digestibilities. No significant (P > 0.05) differences were observed in apparent neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility, eating, chewing and ruminating times. However, eating and ruminating times (as min/kg NDF intake) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in kids. Final body weight and average daily weight gain were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in lambs while kids had significantly (P < 0.05) lower feed to gain ratio. Feed cost per kilogram weight gain for kids was better than that for lambs. Results demonstrated that Awassi lambs consumed more feed and grew faster than Baladi kids. However, kids were more efficient feed converters than lambs.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine the resistance level of Haemonchus contortus isolated from the Santa Inês flock of the Embrapa (Brazilian government's Agricultural Research Company), Southeast Livestock Unit (CPPSE), as well as to determine costs of characterizing and maintaining this isolate in host donors. Forty-two male Santa Inês lambs were experimentally infected with 4000 H. contortus infective larvae of the field isolate of CPPSE, called Embrapa2010, and divided into six treatment groups, which received triclorfon, albendazol plus cobalt sulfate, ivermectin, moxidectin, closantel and levamisole phosphate, as well as a negative control group (water). Egg per gram (EPG) counts were performed at 0, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days post treatment when the animals were slaughtered for parasite count. The data were analyzed using the RESO statistical program, considering anthelmintic resistance under 95% of efficacy. EPG and worm count presented a linear and significant relation with 94% determination coefficient. The susceptibility results obtained by RESO through both criteria (EPG and worm count) were equal, except for closantel, showing that the isolate Embrapa2010 is resistant to benzimidazoles, macrocyclic lactones and imidazothiazoles. The need of a control group did not appear to be essential since the result for susceptibility in the analyses with or without this group was the same. Suppression in egg production after treatment did not occur in the ivermectin and moxidectin groups. In the control group, the establishment percentage was just 12.5 because of the low number of third-stage larvae, resistance (innate and infection immunity) of the animals studied plus good nutrition. Drug classes presented similar efficacy between adults and immature stages. The costs for isolate characterization were calculated for 42 animals during 60 days. The total cost based on local market rates was approximately US$ 8000. The precise identification of Brazilian isolates and their establishment in host donors would be useful for laboratorial anthelmintic resistance diagnoses through in vitro tests, which has an annual cost of approximately US$ 2500 for maintenance in host donors.  相似文献
