Biological control of Canada thistle using Puccinia punctiformis has been largely unsuccessful in part due to a low incidence of systemically infected shoots and heterogeneous distribution of teliospores in the soil. The present study investigated the feasibility of strategic mowing to improve incidence of systemically infected shoots, and enhance intra- and/or inter-season disease development in two unused pastures. Mid-season mowing of plots in July lead to a greater proportion of systemically infected shoots in experimental plots observed at seasons’ end compared to unmowed plots. Late-season mowing in September resulted in the highest levels of systemically infected shoots early the next summer. Over time, September mowing treatments significantly increased the proportion of systemically infected shoots compared to no mowing. The number of healthy shoots declined over time in mowed plots, whereas the number of healthy shoots in unmowed plots either increased or remained constant. These effects were observed in experimental plots in both pastures. It is proposed that mowing followed by regrowth of systemically infected shoots may help overcome the monocyclic nature of the pathogen and enhance severity of this disease.  相似文献

The weakly-competitive grass, Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl., and the highly competitive grass, Elymus repens (L.), coexist on roadsides in Central Europe which are regularly mowed. The effect of mowing on this existence was evaluated in situ at the roadside and in experimental field plots under non-limiting water and nutrient conditions. In four experimental garden plots, tussocks of P. distans were transplanted into monocultures of E. repens early in the growing season. After establishment, two of the plots were mowed and two left unmowed. In the unmowed plots, P. distans was quickly overtopped and died, while in mowed plots, P. distans was able to persist throughout the growing season. Despite persistence in the mowed plots, the number of tillers of P. distans declined throughout the growing season as numbers of tillers of E. repens increased. It was concluded that mowing could enhance coexistence in situations of unlimited nutrients and water where the faster growing and aggressive E. repens would exclude P. distans without mowing. At the roadside, six plots were established at a site containing both species early in the growing season. Weekly mowing was performed on three of the plots while the others were left unmowed. In mid-July, when the grasses were beginning to senesce and had produced seed-heads, foliage area for P. distans was significantly higher in the mowed than the unmowed plots while the reverse was true for E. repens. While P. distans had higher foliage area in the mowed plots, it was able to persist to seedhead production in the unmowed plots. Simulations conducted with a multispecies canopy photosynthesis model indicated that reductions in carbon gain for P. distans due to shading by foliage of E. repens did not correspond well with foliage area for P. distans at the start of experiment or in the mowed and unmowed plots in mid-July. In both the mowed and unmowed plots, the portion of foliage consisting of P. distans increased with closeness to the roadway and corresponded inversely with soil depth. At soil depths of greater than 15 cm, P. distans did not occur. More effective exploitation of shallow soil may shift the competitive balance toward P. distans and be a significant factor in the coexistence of these two species in the shallow soils at the roadside. Differences in leaf temperatures at the roadside that might result from different leaf widths were also evaluated. The narrower-leaved P. distans was hypothesized to have lower midday leaf temperatures at sites close to the asphalt and perhaps be closer to the temperature optimum for photosynthesis during warm summer days. In situ leaf temperature measurements made with small thermocouples attached to intact leaves, however, were not significantly different for the two species, and coexistence was not likely to be affected by leaf temperatures.  相似文献

Effects of Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and Potato virus Y (PVY) on vegetative growth, physiological metabolism and microtuber production were investigated using in vitro shoot cultures. The results showed that parameters of shoot growth including bud break percentage, shoot length, and node number and length were markedly reduced in the diseased shoots. These negative effects were much more pronounced in shoots co-infected with PLRV and PVY than in those singly infected with either PLRV or PVY. The inhibitive effects on root developments measured by root number and length were observed only in shoots co-infected with PLRV and PVY. Significantly lower contents of chl-a, chl-b and total chl were found in virus infected shoots than in healthy ones. There were striking differences in contents of total soluble protein observed between healthy shoots and PLVR and PVY co-infected ones. The content of total soluble sugar was highest in shoots co-infected with PLRV and PVY, and lowest in healthy shoots. Furthermore, there were no significant differences found in the level of endogenous indole-acetic acid among healthy shoots verses virus infected shoots. However, the level of zeatin-ribosome was much higher in healthy shoots than in virus infected ones. Yet, both healthy and single PLRV infected shoots produced similar levels of gibberillic acid 3, which were much higher than those of PVY single-infected shoots and PLRV and PVY co-infected shoots. Also, there were no significant differences in the number of microtubers among healthy shoots, PLVR single or PVY single infected shoots, but shoots co-infected with PLRV and PVY produced the lowest number of microtubers. Overall, the healthy shoots produced the largest size of microtubers and the highest percentage of microtubers ≥5 mm in diameter.  相似文献

Healthy black-currant bushes (var. Wellington XXX) and others infected systemically with a virulent strain of reversion virus were exposed equally to infestation by the gall-mite vector (Phytoptus ribis Nal.). Shoots with malformed leaves caused by mites feeding at the stem apices were virtually restricted to the virus-infected bushes. Buds infested with mites became rounded galls, which were far fewer and more localized on shoots of healthy bushes than on infected ones. Similar results were obtained in further experiments with Wellington XXX and seven other varieties. Bushes infected systemically with an avirulent strain of reversion virus developed more galls than healthy bushes, but fewer galls than bushes infected with a virulent strain. The young buds of virus-infected bushes were 170 times more susceptible to dispersing mites than those of healthy bushes. The axillary buds of healthy bushes resisted infestation and the apical meristems were virtually inaccessible to mites, whereas the axillary and apical buds of virus-infected bushes were invaded readily. An experiment with bushes var. Cotswold Cross that were either healthy or partially or completely infected with reversion virus was retained for two years. Each year there was a relationship between symptom expression and mite infestation; only shoots with chronic virus symptoms developed mite-affected leaves and numerous galls. Virus infection increased the vulnerability and accessibility of the apical and axillary buds by decreasing the density of hairs on the stems and leaves. Infected bushes also presented a greater catchment area to dispersing mites and more shoots and buds were available for colonization than on healthy bushes. The interactions between virus, host and vector are discussed, together with their implications in nature, in experimental design and in disease control.  相似文献

Many early attempts at tallgrass prairie reconstruction failed to achieve the high species diversity of remnant prairies, and instead consist primarily of C4 grasses. We hypothesized that frequent mowing of established prairie grasses could create sufficient gaps in the aboveground and belowground environment to allow for the establishment of native forbs from seed. We studied forb seedling establishment in a 25‐year‐old prairie planting in northern Iowa that was dominated by native warm‐season grasses. In winter 1999, 23 species of native forbs were broadcast into the recently burned sod at a rate of 350 viable seeds/m2. Treatment plots were mowed weekly for either one or two growing seasons, and control plots were unmowed. Mowed plots had greater light availability than controls, especially when warm‐season grasses began to flower. Overwinter seedling mortality was 3% in mowed treatments compared to 29% in the controls. Forbs in mowed plots had significantly greater root and shoot mass than those in control plots in the first and second growing seasons but were not significantly more abundant. By the fourth growing season, however, forbs were twice as abundant in the mowed treatments. No lasting negative impacts of frequent mowing on the grass population were observed. Mowing a second year influenced species composition but did not change total seedling establishment. Experimental evidence is consistent with the idea that mowing reduced competition for light from large established grasses, allowing forb seedlings the opportunity to reach sufficient size to establish, survive, and flower in the second and subsequent years.  相似文献

Due to its ability to create aboveground conditions that favour plant diversity, mowing is often used to preserve the high conservation value of semi-natural species-rich grasslands. However, mowing can also affect belowground conditions. By decreasing plant carbon supply to soil, mowing can suppress the activity of soil decomposers, diminish plant nutrient availability and thus create a feedback on plant growth. In this study, we first documented the effects of three-year mowing on plant community structure in a species-rich grassland. We found that mowing decreased the total areal cover of woody plants and increased the total cover of leguminous forbs. At the species level, mowing further increased the cover of two non-leguminous forbs, Prunella vulgaris and Sagina procumbens. Mowing did not affect the species number, diversity or evenness of the plant community. To study whether any of these effects could be explained by mowing-induced changes in the soil, and particularly by reduced nutrient availability, we then collected soil from different treatment plots and monitored the growth of nine plant species in these soils in a greenhouse. Plant growth did not differ between soils collected from mowed and unmowed plots, suggesting that our mowing regimes did not impose such changes in soil decomposer activity and nutrient supply that would feedback on plant growth. Moreover, each of the nine species responded equally to the different nutrient availability in different parts of the grassland, which indicates that even if mowing had reduced plant nutrient supply, this would not have led to changes in plant community structure. It appears that those changes in aboveground vegetation that we recorded after three years of mowing were purely due to the aboveground effects, such as frequent cutting of woody plants and enhanced light availability for low-growing forbs.  相似文献

California grasslands have been severely impacted by the invasion of nonnative annual grasses, which often limit restoration of this important ecosystem. In this study, we explored the use of mowing as a restoration tool for native perennial grasslands at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in southern California. We sought to evaluate if, over time, mowing would reduce nonnative annual grass cover and benefit native species, especially the native bunchgrass Stipa pulchra. We hypothesized that repeated mowing, carefully timed to target nonnative annual grasses prior to seed maturation, would reduce nonnative seed inputs into the soil and eventually lead to diminished abundance of these species. We monitored vegetation in mowed and unmowed plots for 4 years, and conducted a seed bank study after 5 years to better understand the cumulative effects of mowing on native and nonnative seed inputs. Consistent with our hypotheses, we found that mowing successfully reduced nonnative annual grass cover and benefitted some native species, including S. pulchra. However, we also found that nonnative forb species showed progressive increases in mowed plots over time. We observed similar patterns of species composition in the soil seed bank. Together, these results suggest that mowing can be used to control nonnative annual grasses and increase the abundance of native bunchgrasses, but that this method may also have the unintended consequence of increasing nonnative forb species.  相似文献

Dynamics of common reed (Phragmites australisTrin.) in Central Europe have so far mostly beeninvestigated in connection with studies on reed`die-back' along lake shores. However, there hasrecently been increasing concern about reed expansionat terrestrial sites, such as fens and wet grasslands. In this paper we report on the results of fourseparate studies which monitored reed dynamics inSwiss fens with various mowing regimes over a periodof 4 to 15 years. The first study compared unmownplots with plots mown in winter in a triennialrotation; the second one included unmown plots, plotsmown in summer, and plots mown in winter; the thirdone compared plots mown in June and September withplots only mown in September; the fourth studyinvestigated only plots mown in September. Shootnumber and shoot size were recorded in permanentquadrats. In all studies the performance of P.australisfluctuated without trend or tended todecrease during the period investigated. Thedecreasing tendency concerned shoot size rather thanshoot number, and within a given study it was strongerfor plots with initially taller shoots. The variousmowing regimes did hardly influence these changes.Mowing in winter every three years reduced shoot sizein the year after mowing, but not on the long term.Mowing every year in late summer reduced the shootsize compared with unmown plots on the short term, butthis effect almost disappeared on the long term, aftermowing had become biennial. Mowing in June (inaddition to in September) caused no noticeableeffects. We conclude that other factors (e.g. weatherconditions, competition, or population processes) aremore important than management in determining theabundance of P. australisin the fen communitiesinvestigated here, although long-term effects ofmowing in summer still need more investigation. As apractical consequence it is suggested that at siteswhich are not strongly dominated by P.australis, as most of those investigated here, reducing the performance of this species should notconstitute a major target of nature conservationmanagement, nor can its dynamics be used as anindicator for management success before underlyingcauses are better understood.  相似文献

Abstract The conservation of threatened vertebrate species and their threatened parasites requires an understanding of the factors influencing their distribution and dynamics. This is particularly important for species maintained in conservation reserves at high densities, where increased contact among hosts could lead to increased rates of parasitism. The tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) (Reptilia: Sphenodontia) is a threatened reptile that persists at high densities in forests (~ 2700 tuatara/ha) and lower densities in pastures and shrubland (< 200 tuatara/ha) on Stephens Island, New Zealand. We investigated the lifecycles and seasonal dynamics of infestation of two ectoparasites (the tuatara tick, Amblyomma sphenodonti, and trombiculid mites, Neotrombicula sp.) in a mark‐recapture study in three forest study plots from November 2004 to March 2007, and compared infestation levels among habitat types in March 2006. Tick loads were lowest over summer and peaked from late autumn (May) until early spring (September). Mating and engorgement of female ticks was highest over spring, and larval tick loads subsequently increased in early autumn (March). Nymphal tick loads increased in September, and adult tick loads increased in May. Our findings suggest the tuatara tick has a 2‐ or 3‐year lifecycle. Mite loads were highest over summer and autumn, and peaked in March. Prevalences (proportion of hosts infected) and densities (estimated number of parasites per hectare) of ticks were similar among habitats, but tick loads (parasites per host) were higher in pastures than in forests and shrub. The prevalence and density of mites was higher in forests than in pasture or shrub, but mite loads were similar among habitats. We suggest that a higher density of tuatara in forests may reduce the ectoparasite loads of individuals through a dilution effect. Understanding host–parasite dynamics will help in the conservation management of both the host and its parasites.  相似文献

Pastoral farmers in New Zealand have described dramatic demises in populations of the weed Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., a perennial herb indigenous to Eurasia, following its mowing during rainfall. To test the hypotheses (1) that the mowing of C. arvense during rainfall increases the control of this weed and (2) that the causal organism in this ‘mowing-in-the-rain’ effect is the vascular wilt fungus Verticillium dahliae, two series of field experiments were carried out in C. arvense-infested pastures in New Zealand, one in autumn 2008 (Experiment series 1, 9 farms), and another in spring/summer 2008–2009 (Experiment series 2, 12 farms). The effect of mowing in the rain as compared to mowing in the dry was to reduce the % ground cover of the thistle in the spring following treatment by 21 and 32% in Experiment series 1 and 2, respectively. Correlations of this ‘rain versus dry’ effect with the incidence of V. dahliae in the subterranean parts of C. arvense shoots sampled in each of the two field experiment series provided no statistical evidence that the effect increased with V. dahliae incidence. Thus these experiments provide no support for the hypothesis that V. dahliae is the biological mechanism for the ‘mowing-in-the-rain’ effect. Nevertheless, they do support mowing during rainfall as a simple and effective management tactic for C. arvense.  相似文献

Mowing experiments were carried out from1995 to 2001 in Swiss fen meadows toinvestigate whether the abundance of Phragmites australis is reduced by mowingin early summer in addition to mowing inautumn. Experimental plots of 100 m2were established in three fen meadows thatare mown every year in September; treatedplots received an additional cut in lateJune either every year or every two years.Until 1997, the additional cut had noeffect on the above-ground biomass of Phragmites (monitored every year in lateJune). As from 1998, the biomass of Phragmites was 25–30% lower in the plotswith annual June cut than in the controlplots. However, the pooled biomass of allother plant species decreased similarly, sothat the degree of dominance of Phragmites was not reduced. An additionalJune cut every two years had no effect onthe biomass of Phragmites. In June2001, the shoots of Phragmites weresmaller in annually June-cut plots than incontrol plots, but allometric relationshipsbetween shoot length and diameter, shootgrowth from June to August, and nitrogenand phosphorus concentrations of shoots didnot differ between June-cut and controlplots. The additional June cut increasedthe total export of N with the hay by 18%,and that of P by 50% in 2001. Theseadditional nutrient exports were smallerthan those found in the first years of theexperiment and not larger for Phragmites than for the remainder of thevegetation. Together, the results suggestthat a depletion of below-ground storescaused Phragmites to decrease afterseveral years of additional mowing in June.Eighty further permanent quadrats in fenmeadows with normal management (mownannually in September) were surveyed in1995–96 and in 2001. The above-groundbiomass of Phragmites increasedduring this time in 49 out of 80 plots, with a mean relative difference of +35.5%.Thus, even if additional mowing in earlysummer only slightly reduced theperformance of Phragmites compared toplots mown only in September, thistreatment might help to prevent the speciesfrom spreading under the current conditionsin Swiss fen meadows.  相似文献

Stem canker (Rhizoctonia solani) of maincrop potatoes.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In two years, potato plants were sampled at 1- or 2- weekly intervals from plots planted with seed tubers bearing sclerotia of Rhizoctonia solani (black scurf) and with seed without sclerotia either infested or not with cultures of R. solani at planting. Sprouted King Edward seed was used in 1981 and sprouted and non-sprouted King Edward and Pentland Crown seed in 1982. In both years 60–80% of shoots from seed with sclerotia and 90% of shoots from seed inoculated at planting were affected with stem canker. Most disease developed before shoots emerged although it gradually increased later when new shoots arising both from seed tubers or as branches on shoots with damaged apices (pruned shoots) became infected before they emerged. Sprouting seed tubers bearing sclerotia decreased the disease on both cultivars but with soil-applied inoculum the disease was more severe on plants from sprouted than non-sprouted seed. Some stolons were infected by R. solani soon after they developed and incidence of infection later increased. Thirty to 50% of stolons were infected on plants from infected seed tubers and 60% on plants with soil-applied inoculum. With both cultivars and sources of inoculum about 70% of the infected stolons had their apices killed (pruned).  相似文献

The effect of a dominant species, the litter layer, and the moss layer on seedlings and established vegetation was evaluated in two manipulative experiments in an oligotrophic wet meadow (Molinion with some features ofViolion caninae according to phytosociological classification). In the first experiment, the dominant species (Nardus stricta), litter layer, and litter layer together with the moss layer were removed and the response of the established vegetation and seedlings were compared with a control. Results revealed that after one season there was no significant effect of the treatments on established vegetation, but seedling recruitment was significantly affected. The greatest increase of seedling recruitment for many species was observed in the plots with the moss layer removed. In the second experiment, seeds ofSelinum carvifolia were sown into plots subjected to the following treatments: complete vegetation removal, mowing, mowing combined with removal of the moss layer, and an untreated control. The highest number of seedlings was found in plots with the vegetation removed, but the seedling recruitment was nearly as high in plots with the moss layer removed. Low numbers were found in mown plots and the lowest in the untreated control. The results show that seedling recruitment is more sensitive to competition than the established vegetation, at least over one season. This supports the idea of the importance of the regeneration niche for the maintenance of diversity in grassland communities.  相似文献

We examined how environmental factors combined with the diverse ways of the extensive management of mesic mountain grasslands affect species composition and diversity in the Polish part of Central Sudetes Mts. Based on the data from 100 research plots altitude, organic matter content and exchangeable magnesium in the soil, as well as the maximum soil water capacity and amount of sand fraction significantly affected species composition. Among the management methods, a significant effect on the differentiation of species composition was observed following the cessation of usage and mowing. Mown meadows had the highest share of forbs in the biomass, whereas those abandoned ones were dominated by tall and expansive grasses, mainly Calamagrostis epigejos. The species richest grasslands occurred in areas with soils of high water capacity, containing high concentrations of calcium and low amounts of total nitrogen. No significant effect of management methods on the total number of species as well as on the number of forb species was observed. Mown pastures had the highest mean value of the Shannon–Wiener diversity index.  相似文献

The adventitious shoots in three populations of Cirsium arvense in sheep-grazed pastures were treated in October (spring) 1991 with a mycelium/wheat formulation of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and the fates of mapped shoots were followed over the growing season. In untreated plots, deaths through natural causes were compensated for by births (emergence of new shoots above the soil) throughout the growing season, but, on plots treated with S. sclerotiorum, deaths from the induced disease exceeded births for 35 days following treatment, causing the shoot population to decline markedly. Disease-induced deaths occurred only among shoots present at the time of treatment; there was no evidence of transfer of the pathogen to shoots emerging after the treatment was applied. A life-table analysis showed that only 8% of the adventitious shoots emerging during the growing season survived to seeding on treated plots, compared with 28% on the untreated plots; most mortalities occurred in shoots at the vegetative stage of development. The dry mass of propagative roots in autumn was reduced to 35% of that on the untreated plots by the pathogen and the density of shoots emerging the following spring was reduced to a similar extent. The results of this study indicate that S. sclerotiorum has potential as a mycoherbicide for C. arvense in sheep-grazed pasture in New Zealand.  相似文献

Grasshopper assemblages were sampled in 44 plots in each of three adjacent sites in a 40-year-old southern tall grassland experimental area in South Africa. Specific plots received particular mowing and/or burning treatments over the 40-year period. Grasshopper responses to vegetation type, and to different burning and mowing practices, were site-specific, despite the close proximity of sites. This suggests that grasshopper assemblage composition is not entirely deterministic and depends on the trajectory of plant succession. Grasshopper species richness and abundance decreased from annually to triennially burnt plots, and increased in plots mown once per year to plots mown three times per year. Burning in the first week of August (winter) was more favourable for grasshopper assemblages than burning in autumn or after the first spring rains. Mean grasshopper species richness was highest in plots mown after the first spring rains, and the mean number of individuals was highest i n plots mown early in summer. When annually burnt plots were compared with annually mown plots, grasshopper abundance and species richness were highest in the burnt plots. A rotational winter burning programme, which is practical under African conditions, is recommended for the conservation of grasshoppers and other invertebrates.  相似文献

In the Turku Archipelago of SW Finland the traditional animal husbandry dramatically decreased in 1950s after which the unused semi-natural pastures and meadows began to develop into less species rich shrub and tree communities. Restoration of some semi-natural meadows and pastures started in the late 1970s. Removing trees and shrubs, grazing, mowing, and pollarding deciduous trees were used as restoration of practises. Vegetation changes were followed from forty-one permanent sample plots established on restored areas. In this paper the data before restoration and 7–8 years after the first monitoring was analysed with parametric tests. The sample plots were divided into three restoration groups where the main restoration practises were: group 1. grazing, group 2. thinning (clearing plots from shrubs and removing some trees), group 3. thinning, mowing, and grazing (old wooded meadows). The results showed that: (1) The vegetation changed during analysed time. The number of species increased in all restored areas even though the changes were more pronounced in grazed areas and wooded meadows than in thinned areas. During restoration many common herb and grass species immigrated into the sample plots, but very few new indicator species of meadows were recorded. Most of the new species were found in few numbers in a sample plot which led to the significant increase in the number of sparse species (percentage cover < 1) in all restoration groups. The grasses benefited more from the restoration than herbs increasing their percentage cover significantly in grazed areas and in wooded meadows. In thinned areas the total percentage cover of the ten most dominant herb and grass species increased significantly. (2) The different restoration groups changed vegetation quite similarly. In grazed areas and in wooded meadows significant changes were slightly more numerous than in thinned areas. (3) The differences between the islands in vegetation changes were not pronounced. The added variance components among islands increased during restoration which probably indicated that the restoration practises as well as the species pool of the islands influenced the success of restoration.  相似文献

Wild edible plants, ecological foodstuffs obtained from forest ecosystems, grow in natural fields, and their productivity depends on their response to harvesting by humans. Addressing exactly how wild edible plants respond to harvesting is critical because this knowledge will provide insights into how to obtain effective and sustainable ecosystem services from these plants. We focused on bamboo shoots of Sasa kurilensis, a popular wild edible plant in Japan. We examined the effects of harvesting on bamboo shoot productivity by conducting an experimental manipulation of bamboo shoot harvesting. Twenty experimental plots were prepared in the Teshio Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University and were assigned into two groups: a harvest treatment, in which newly emerged edible bamboo shoots were harvested (n = 10); and a control treatment, in which bamboo shoots were maintained without harvesting (n = 10). In the first year of harvesting (2013), bamboo shoot productivities were examined twice; i.e., the productivity one day after harvesting and the subsequent post-harvest productivity (2–46 days after harvesting), and we observed no difference in productivity between treatments. This means that there was no difference in original bamboo shoot productivity between treatments, and that harvesting did not influence productivity in the initial year. In contrast, in the following year (2014), the number of bamboo shoots in the harvested plots was 2.4-fold greater than in the control plots. These results indicate that over-compensatory growth occurred in the harvested plots in the year following harvesting. Whereas previous research has emphasized the negative impact of harvesting, this study provides the first experimental evidence that harvesting can enhance the productivity of a wild edible plant. This suggests that exploiting compensatory growth, which really amounts to less of a decline in productivity, may be s a key for the effective use of wild edible plants.  相似文献

Land‐use intensification is a major driver of local species extinction and homogenization. Temperate grasslands, managed at low intensities over centuries harbored a high species diversity, which is increasingly threatened by the management intensification over the last decades. This includes key taxa like ants. However, the underlying mechanisms leading to a decrease in ant abundance and species richness as well as changes in functional community composition are not well understood. We sampled ants on 110 grassland plots in three regions in Germany. The sampled grasslands are used as meadows or pastures, being mown, grazed or fertilized at different intensities. We analyzed the effect of the different aspects of land use on ant species richness, functional trait spaces, and community composition by using a multimodel inference approach and structural equation models. Overall, we found 31 ant species belonging to 8 genera, mostly open habitat specialists. Ant species richness, functional trait space of communities, and abundance of nests decreased with increasing land‐use intensity. The land‐use practice most harmful to ants was mowing, followed by heavy grazing by cattle. Fertilization did not strongly affect ant species richness. Grazing by sheep increased the ant species richness. The effect of mowing differed between species and was strongly negative for Formica species while Myrmica and common Lasius species were less affected. Rare species occurred mainly in plots managed at low intensity. Our results show that mowing less often or later in the season would retain a higher ant species richness—similarly to most other grassland taxa. The transformation from (sheep) pastures to intensively managed meadows and especially mowing directly affects ants via the destruction of nests and indirectly via loss of grassland heterogeneity (reduced plant species richness) and increased soil moisture by shading of fast‐growing plant species.  相似文献

The potential importance of the beet ringspot strain of tomato black-ring, a soil-borne virus, was assessed by growing stocks of Kerr's Pink potato for 1 year on infested land and subsequently on uninfested land. The incidence of infection in two stocks was 39 and 8% in the first year on uninfested land, and 29 and 5% after 2 years.
The virus was usually restricted to the roots of plants in the first year of infection, but a few plants showed black rings and spots in their leaves. In the second year, 20–55% of the plants grown from tubers set by symptomless, but infected, mother plants were infected: many of these showed leaf necrosis, others had stunted shoots, and cupped and distorted leaves; some were symptomless although systemically infected. In the third and fourth years, most of the progeny from plants which had symptoms or which were symptomless but systemically infected, contained the virus: nearly all such infected plants were stunted and distorted or were symptomless. Infection decreased the weight of tubers produced by plants with severe necrotic spotting but not the yield of plants with less necrosis. The number and weight of tubers per plant were decreased by 15 and 20% respectively, in symptomless systemically infected plants, and by 20 and 30% in stunted plants.  相似文献
