The effect of ewe's milk versus artificial rearing on the mineral content of suckling lambs muscle and liver was investigated, using a practically non-destructive sampling of carcasses. Mineral content was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).Significant differences in mineral composition of muscle and liver were observed between the two groups belonging to each type of weaning. In muscle, these differences were mostly detected for Na, Zn and particularly Mn contents. As for the liver's mineral content, significant higher concentrations of K, P and Cu and lower amounts of Zn and Mn were observed in samples from ewe's milk reared lambs, when compared to those from hand reared ones. Results obtained lead to the conclusion that mineral composition of suckling lamb's muscle and liver differed significantly according to the mineral intake of the ingested milk or formula. However, determination of the mineral content of either lambs’ muscle or liver does not seem to provide an accurate and sensible method for discriminating between carcasses from either type of rearing.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The objectives of the present study were to quantify the deposition of carotenoids and tocopherols in the tissues of suckling lamb and to use the levels of those compounds to trace the maternal feeding. Twenty suckling lambs were raised with their dams in vegetative-stage pastures, and 19 suckling lambs were stalled indoors with dams that received hay ad libitum, until the lambs reached 10–12 kg. The lambs’ weekly intake of carotenoids and tocopherols was estimated from the milk production of the ewes and the carotenoid and tocopherol content of the milk. Samples of the subcutaneous and perirenal fat, longissimus thoracis muscle, and liver of the suckling lambs were collected at 24 h after slaughter. The pasture-raised lambs had greater intake of lutein than their indoor counterparts throughout the suckling period (p < 0.05), more retinol during the second and third weeks of the suckling period (p < 0.05), and more α-tocopherol during the first three weeks of the suckling period (p < 0.05), being similar thereafter. The pasture-raised lambs, when compared to the lambs raised indoors, had greater lutein content in the muscle and liver (p < 0.001), retinol and α-tocopherol content in all tissues (p < 0.001) and muscle and liver γ-tocopherol content (p < 0.05). The maternal feeding could be accurately predicted from the carotenoid and tocopherol content of whole lamb carcasses and muscle tissue but not from those of ewes’ milk, lamb liver tissue or lamb fat deposits.  相似文献

After parturition (Day 0), 31 mature spring-lambing, fine-wool ewes were randomly allotted to one of six groups. Treatments were lambs suckled (one or two) and ovine growth hormone (oGH; 0, 5 or 10 mg). Growth hormone was administered subcutaneously daily from Days 6 to 25. Milk characteristics were determined on Day 26. Ewes were observed for estrus beginning on Day 27. Serum insulin did not differ (P > 0.10) between suckling intensity before or after oGH treatment on Days 6, 15 or 25. Likewise, no difference (P > 0.10) in serum insulin was detected among ewes receiving 0, 5 or 10 mg oGH. Ewes suckling twins had higher (P < 0.05) serum growth hormone on Day 6 (before beginning oGH treatment) than ewes suckling single lambs. In ewes receiving 0, 5 and 10 mg oGH, serum growth hormone differed (P < 0.01) in a linear fashion 1 h after treatment was initiated on Day 6 and continued through Hour 6. Serum growth hormone on Days 15 and 25 differed among groups both before and after oGH was administered (P < 0.01). Suckling intensity did not affect (P > 0.10) milk or milk protein and fat yields; however, oGH increased (linear, P < 0.05) fat but did not affect milk or protein yields. Interval from parturition to estrus did not differ (P > 0.20) in ewes suckling single or twin offspring. Likewise, no differences (P > 0.20) in interval length were noted in ewes receiving 0, 5 or 10 mg oGH. Suckling intensity and oGH administration for 20 d had little effect on postpartum interval or milk characteristics during the first 30 d after lambing in fine-wool ewes.  相似文献

Studies of parental investment in mammals have frequently used suckling behaviour to estimate energy transfer from mother to offspring, and consequently to measure maternal input. Such studies assume that the more an offspring sucks, the more milk it will receive. This assumption has been questioned, and a review of the literature found little support for it. To test if suckling behaviour provided an accurate index of milk or energy intake we used a radioactive isotope technique to label the milk of thoroughbred mares and to measure milk transfer to foals. We found no significant linear relationship between usual measures of suckling behaviour and milk or energy intake. No behaviours associated with suckling nor with characteristics of mares and foals improved the relationship; only the number of butts associated with each suck episode even approached significance. If we had used suckling behaviour to test theories on differential maternal investment our conclusions would have been in error. For example, female foals tended to suck for longer than males did but there was no difference in the amount of milk transferred. Consequently, we show that measures of suckling behaviour do not adequately predict milk intake in the domestic horse and we suggest that conclusions about differential maternal investment in mammals based on suckling behaviour are likely to be in error. Breast feeding can serve as a contraceptive up to 6 months after birth with 98% effectiveness. The so-called suckling reflex arc is a sensitive mechanism conveying messages about nutritional needs of the child, stimulating the release of prolactin responsible for milk production, suppressing ovarian activity by hypothalamic beta-endorphin production leading to reduction in the pulsatile release of gonadotrophic hormones. Increased suckling produces more milk, but only in well-fed women. In Bangladesh, malnourished children required more suckling time than better-fed infants. Increasing the amounts of weaning food lowers feed urgency and suckling intensity thereby relaxing ovarian suppression. Breast-milk consumption can be measured by test weighing the infant before and after feeding, but it is subject to error, especially in developing countries where up to 20 feeds are required to deliver 800 ml of milk. Thus, weighing over 2-5 days is more accurate. The method of giving deuterium oxide tracer to the mother, and measuring its disappearance from the mother's milk and the infant's saliva for 2 weeks is precise and noninvasive. The Doppler ultrasound technique measures milk flow through an artificial teat for research purposes. Manual or mechanical pump measurement of milk transfer separates the mother from the child, thus it is not useful for normal conditions. It can be used for estimating the amount of milk left and the rate of milk secretion by using a breast pump along with oxytocin for full emptying of milk. Accurate estimation of suckling intensity and milk transfer is essential for the determination of the relationship of breast feeding and lactational infecundity.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of milk replacer and rumen inert fat on growth, testicular development, puberty, semen production and sperm motion characteristics of ram lambs reared under intensive management in semi-arid climatic conditions. Seven-day-old male lambs of Malpura breed (n=20) were divided equally into two groups. Up to weaning, the lambs in G1 group (control) were fed concentrate, green khejri (Prosopis cineraria) leaves and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) hay along with suckling of dams, whereas lambs in G2 group were fed reconstituted milk at 17 g/lamb per day for the 1st week and at 34 g/lamb per day from 2nd week in addition to the feed inputs given in G1. During post weaning, lambs in the G1 group were given control concentrate, whereas in G2 the control concentrate supplemented with 40 g rumen inert fat per kg of feed was offered along with dry pala (Zizyphus nummularia) and ardu (Ailanthus excelsa) leaves. BWs of lambs were recorded weekly up to 6 months of age. Ram lambs of both the groups were trained for semen collection at a weekly interval from the age of 5 months and simultaneously testicular measurements were recorded fortnightly. The feeding of milk replacer and rumen inert fat had positive (P<0.05) effects on BW, testicular length, testicular volume, semen volume, sperm concentration, mass motility, % motility, % rapid, medium or slow motile spermatozoa. However, no significant effect was observed on testicular breadth, scrotal circumference, age of puberty, sperm velocities and other CASA-derived parameters. The results of this study indicate that higher plane of nutrition in the form of milk-replacer feeding during preweaning and rumen inert fat-supplemented feed during the postweaning period to growing ram lambs enhances their growth, testicular development and semen quality.  相似文献

Enhancing healthy fatty acids (FAs) in ewe milk fat and suckling lamb tissues is an important objective in terms of improving the nutritional value of these foods for the consumer. The present study examined the effects of feeding-protected lipid supplements rich in unsaturated FAs on the lipid composition of ewe milk, and subsequently in the muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissues of lambs suckling such milk. Thirty-six pregnant Churra ewes with their new-born lambs were assigned to one of three experimental diets (forage/concentrate ratio 50 : 50), each supplemented with either 3% Ca soap FAs of palm (Control), olive (OLI) or fish (FO) oil. The lambs were nourished exclusively by suckling for the whole experimental period. When the lambs reached 11 kg BW, they were slaughtered and samples were taken from the Longissimus dorsi and subcutaneous fat depots. Although milk production was not affected by lipid supplementation, the FO diet decreased fat content (P<0.001), whereas the OLI milk FA profile resembled that of the Control diet. In contrast, although FO drastically diminished the contents of stearic and oleic acids (P<0.001), all the saturated even-numbered carbon FAs from 6:0 to 14:0 increased (P<0.05). FO also produced the highest levels of c9,t11-18:2 (2.21%) and n-3 FAs, 20:5 n-3 (0.58%), 22:5 n-3 (0.48%) and 22:6 n-3 (0.40%). The high levels of trans-11 18:1 (7.10%) obtained from the FO diet would suggest that Ca soaps only confer partial protection in the rumen. In contrast, the lack of significant differences in trans-10 18:1 levels (P>0.05) and other trans-FAs between Control and FO treatments would indicate that FO treatment does not alter rumen biohydrogenation pathways under the assayed conditions. Changes in dam milk FA composition induced differences in the FA profiles of meat and fat depots of lambs, preferentially incorporated polyunsaturated FAs into the muscle rather than storing them in the adipose tissue. In the intramuscular fat of the FO treatment, all the n-3 FAs reached their highest concentrations: 0.97 (18:3 n-3), 2.72 (20:5 n-3), 2.21 (22:5 n-3) and 1.53% (22:6 n-3). In addition, not only did FO intramuscular fat have the most cis-9, trans-11 18:2 (1.66%) and trans-11 18:1 (3.75%), but also the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio (1.80) and saturated FA content were not affected. Therefore, FO exhibited the best FA profile from a nutritional point of view.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of vegetable oil supplementation of ewe diets on the performance and fatty acid (FA) composition of their suckling lambs. Forty-eight pregnant Churra ewes (mean BW 64.3±0.92 kg) with their 72 newborn lambs (prolificacy=1.5) were assigned to one of four experimental diets, supplemented with 3% of hydrogenated palm (PALM), olive (OLI), soya (SOY) or linseed (LIN) oil. Lambs were nourished exclusively by suckling from their respective mothers. Ewes were milked once daily, and milk samples were taken once a week. When lambs reached 11 kg, they were slaughtered and samples were taken from musculus longissimus dorsi (intramuscular fat) and subcutaneous fat tissue. No changes were observed in milk yield, proximal composition or lamb performance (P>0.10). Milk and lamb subcutaneous and intramuscular fat samples from the PALM diet had the highest saturated fatty acid concentration, whereas those of the OLI, SOY and LIN diets had the lowest (P<0.05). The greatest monounsaturated fatty acid concentration was observed in milk from ewes fed OLI, and the least in milk and in lamb subcutaneous and intramuscular fat samples from LIN and PALM diets. Milk and lamb fat from ewes fed PALM displayed the highest 16:0 proportion and the lowest 18:0 (P<0.05). There were higher concentrations of cis-9 18:1 in OLI samples (P<0.05), more 18:2n-6 in SOY lambs and milk fat (P<0.001) and the highest levels of 18:3n-3 and 20:5n-3 in LIN samples (P<0.01). Milk and lamb subcutaneous and intramuscular samples from SOY and LIN diets contained the most cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid, whereas PALM samples had the least (P<0.01). Sheep diet supplementation with different oils, constituting up to 3% of their diets, resulted in changes in the FA composition of milk and the subcutaneous and intramuscular fat of suckling lambs, but did not affect either milk production or lamb performance.  相似文献

Background

The risk of scrapie infection increases with increased duration and proximity of contact between sheep at lambing. Scrapie infectivity has not been detected in milk but cellular prion protein, the precursor of disease-associated prion protein PrPd, has been found in milk from ruminants. To determine whether milk is able to transmit scrapie, 18 lambs with a prion protein genotype associated with high susceptibility to scrapie (VRQ/VRQ) were fed milk from twelve scrapie-affected ewes of the same genotype, and 15 VRQ/VRQ sheep reared on scrapie-free dams served as controls.

Results

Three lambs fed milk from scrapie-affected ewes were culled due to intercurrent diseases at 43, 44 and 105 days of age respectively, and PrPd was detected in the distal ileum of the first two lambs, whilst PrPd was not found in lymphoreticular tissues in the third lamb. A control lamb, housed in a separate pen and culled at 38 days of age, was also negative for PrPd in a range of tissues. Samples of recto-anal mucosa associated lymphoid tissue collected from the remaining 15 live lambs at seven months of age (between five to seven months after mixing) were positive for PrPd in the scrapie milk recipients, whereas PrPd was not detected in the remaining 14 controls at that time. A subsequent sample collected from control lambs revealed PrPd accumulation in two of five lambs eight months after mixing with scrapie milk recipients suggestive of an early stage of infection via lateral transmission. By contrast, the control sheep housed in the same building but not mixed with the scrapie milk recipients were still negative for PrPd.

Conclusion

The presence of PrPd in distal ileum and rectal mucosa indicates transmission of scrapie from ewe to lamb via milk (or colostrum) although it is not yet clear if such cases would go on to develop clinical disease. The high level of infection in scrapie-milk recipients revealed by rectal mucosal testing at approximately seven months of age may be enhanced or supplemented by intra-recipient infection as these lambs were mixed together after feeding with milk from scrapie-affected ewes and we also observed lateral transmission from these animals to lambs weaned from scrapie-free ewes.

Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent and important gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) in small ruminants. Since it reduces the packed cell volume (PCV), causing anemia, early diagnosis can be used for targeted selective treatment (TST) of sheep, reducing antiparasitic drug use and anthelmintic resistance. This study aimed to predict PCV values through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and to develop a classification and diagnosis model of H. contortus infection using PCV values, eggs per gram of feces (EPG) counts and mean daily weight gain (DWG). A total of 1728 spectra were collected from blood samples of 216 lambs with a portable NIR spectroscope. In parallel, other parameters indicative of infection were measured: PCV by hematocrit, FAffa MAlan CHArt (FAMACHA) scores, EPG and DWG. To evaluate the relationship between NIRS spectra and the evaluated parameters, principal component analysis (PCA) was used for an exploratory analysis, regression by the partial least squares method (PLS) for the prediction of PCV values via NIRS, and PCA linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA) as a classification model for diagnosis. The absorption peaks in the NIRS region associated with the excitation of overtones of nitrogen-hydrogen (N-H) functional groups of proteins had a strong impact on the principal components (PCs), indicating that blood proteins, especially hemoglobin, can be estimated by the NIRS technique. The model for predicting PCV by PLS presented a standard error of prediction of 2.53, root-mean-square error of 2.48, and coefficient of determination of 0.84, indicating good correlation between the PCV values predicted by the model and the PCV obtained by hematocrit. The PCA-LDA model presented 93.33% sensitivity and 82.18% accuracy, both higher than those of the FAMACHA method, as was expected for resilient Morada Nova lambs. The multivariate models associated with the NIRS technique reported here can be used in the future as a quick and versatile tool for H. contortus infection diagnosis and TST application in lambs.  相似文献

Forty-eight lambs were artificially reared from 1 day old and offered milk substitute reconstituted to give diets containing 10, 16, 22 and 28% dry matter (DM). Three feeding methods were used for each diet: milk substitute available ad libitum (AL); restricted to a mean daily intake of 1300 g liquid milk substitute (RLQ); and restricted to a mean daily intake of 247 g milk substitute DM (RDM).Solid food intake and lamb growth rate were measured both before and after weaning at 28 days. For method AL, decreasing DM concentration in the milk substitute increased intake of the liquid but decreased that of DM. When DM intakes were held constant, neither method of feeding nor DM concentration had an effect on lamb growth, and level of reconstitution of the milk substitute had no effect on its digestibility. Differences in growth rate before weaning were due entirely to differences in intake of milk substitute DM.After weaning, lambs which had received the diet containing 10% DM tended to perform less well than those that had received the other diets. The lambs were slaughtered at 35 kg live weight. There were no effects of treatment on gains of water, fat and protein.  相似文献

The possibility of reducing the stress associated with artificial rearing through a gradual transition from maternal to reconstituted milk was assessed in thirty Comisana lambs. Animals were assigned to a control dam-suckled group (Suckled) and two test groups. Eighteen to twenty-four hours after parturition, test lambs were separated from their dams: 10 subjects were offered a commercial milk substitute (Sub), whereas the other ten (Mix) were subjected to a gradual transition from maternal to reconstituted milk over ten days. Test-lambs had free access to milk 3 h a day. In vivo cell-mediated immune response of lambs to phytohemagglutinin percutaneous injection was evaluated at 5, 15 and 25 days of age. At 10 and 20 days of age, all lambs were subjected to 15 min isolation tests, during which latency time to move, duration of movement and number of bleats were recorded. Blood samples were collected immediately before the test, 15 and 60 min after in order to assess the effect of differential rearing on cortisol response of animals at different ages. In addition, weight gains of all lambs and milk intakes of test lambs were recorded during the first 35 days of age at weekly intervals. Sub showed a lower immune response (P<0.01) and, at 10 days of age, increased levels of plasma cortisol (P<0.001) as well as a reduced duration of movement (P<0.001) and a longer latency time to move (P<0.001) compared to Suckled and Mix. There were no significant differences between Suckled and Mix for both immune, cortisol and behavioural responses. Mix lambs consumed more milk (P<0.006) and had higher weight gains (P<0.001) compared to Sub lambs. However, Mix lambs gained less weight on average (P<0.05) than Suckled lambs. Our results suggest that a gradual transition from maternal to reconstituted milk is effective in stimulating milk consumption and minimising the detrimental effects of artificial rearing on behavioural, endocrine and immune responses of lambs.  相似文献

A total of 36 mink dams and their litters of 3, 6 or 9 kits were used for determination of milk intake of the suckling young by means of deuterium dilution technique, and chemical composition of milk and of kit bodies. Measurements were performed during lactation weeks 1?–?4, each week with 3 dams with each litter size. Milk intake was determined over a 48?h measurement period, and by the end of this milk samples were collected and 2 kits (litters of 6 and 9) or 1 kit per litter (litters of 3) were killed for body chemical composition. Based on the results, different models were applied for calculation of the energetic efficiency of milk. Dam milk yield increased steadily from week 1 until week 3 but only slightly from week 3 to 4. The increase declined with increasing litter size, and for dams suckling 9 kits the increment from week 3 to week 4 was only 2?g. The dry matter content of milk increased significantly as lactation progressed, being reflected in crude protein increasing from 6.9% in lactation week 1 to 8.1% in week 4. Milk fat increased concomitantly from 5.6% to 8.0%. In kit bodies, crude protein content increased from 9.4% in week 1 to about 12% in weeks 3 and 4. Body fat content increased from week 1 (4.1%) to week 3 (8.4%) and then declined in week 4 (7.1%). Animals suckled in litters of 3 kits had the highest milk intake and live weight and kits suckled in litters of 9 had the lowest milk intake, live weight and daily gain. In terms of milk intake per g gain kits in litters of 6 were the most efficient, with 4.1?g milk per g body gain. The metabolizable energy requirement for maintenance (MEm) was estimated to 448 kJ/kg0.75 and the efficiency of utilization of ME for body gain (kg) to 0.67, the estimates being higher (MEm) or in good agreement with previous findings (kg) in suckling mink kits.  相似文献

The modern hyper-prolific sow gives birth to 17 live-born piglets on average. An alternative strategy to nurse sows and artificial rearing may be providing milk replacer while letting all the piglets stay with their dam. However, milk replacer is of lower nutritional quality than sow milk and may reduce the body fat content of piglets who use milk replacer to compensate for low suckling success due to competition at the udder. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the body composition at weaning of two random sow-reared piglets per litter from 93 litters by using the deuterium oxide dilution technique. The piglets were part of large study with a 2×2×2 factorial design of either 14 or 17 piglets from day 1 (LS: LS14/LS17) with or without access to milk replacer (MILK: -MILK/+MILK) and reared by crated or loose-housed sows (HOUSING: CRATE/ LOOSE). From behavioral observations day 21 in +MILK, piglets were divided according to their frequency of drinking milk replacer and suckling (Nutrition Source). Increasing LS from 14 to 17 reduced the average daily gain from 258 to 228 g/d and body fat % from 14.4 to 12.7% (P<0.01). In a two-way interaction between LS and HOUSNG, the body fat percentage was lower (P=0.04) and the water percentage tended to be higher (P=0.07) in LS17 CRATE compared to the other treatments (i.e. LS17 LOOSE, LS14 CRATE and LOOSE). There was no effect of MILK on piglet composition day 28 (P>0.1). In +MILK, the Nutrition Source affected piglet body composition (P<0.05) as piglets with low suckling frequency (LOW) had lower body fat and higher water content compared to piglets who had high suckling frequency (SUCKLE). Unexpectedly, drinking milk replacer in addition to suckling (MIXED) did not increase piglet body fat content. Relying mainly on milk replacer (CUP) caused body fat and water contents to be intermediate to piglets with high (SUCKLE and MIXED) and low suckling frequency (LOW). In conclusion, LS had a clear impact on piglet growth and body composition at weaning. In contrast, supplementation of milk and housing had only negligible impact on litter performance. Some individual piglets that had low frequency of sow milk intake benefitted from milk supplementation. Loose housing appeared to benefit piglet body fat at weaning but this was due to a greater piglet mortality.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of milk production or milk intake are difficult, as all methods interfere to some degree with the natural behaviour of the dam and her young, and potentially alter milk yield itself. The present study compared milk yield obtained by the “oxytocin” method, udder dimensions (UD), the isotope dilution method, and live weight change of the lamb, in an attempt to select the most accurate and convenient way of measuring milk production in non-dairy sheep. In addition, the study investigated which of the three milk-estimation techniques was an accurate predictor of growth rates of lambs. Thirty-seven singleton-bearing and rearing ewes were milked once a week, for seven consecutive weeks, using the “oxytocin” method. Prior to each afternoon milking, the external dimensions of the ewe's udder were measured. Lambs were weighed weekly for the first seven weeks of life and live weight change was calculated. The deuterium oxide (D2O) dilution technique was used to estimate milk intake of the lambs and performed at approximately 7 days post-partum and finishing on approximately day 14. Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression coefficients among techniques were calculated. The UD-models at d7 (R2 = 0.35), d35 (R2 = 0.36) and d42 (R2 = 0.34), were the best models explaining variation in milk yield (concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) = 0.49; 0.53; 0.51; for d7, d35 and d42, respectively). The lamb live weight-change model explained the variation in milk yield best at d28 (R2 = 0.32; CCC = 0.49), at d35 (R2 = 0.22; CCC = 0.36) and at d42 (R2 = 0.28; CCC = 0.44). At d14, the intake of milk by lambs as measured by the D2O technique, did not explain the variation in milk yield. In conclusion, udder dimensions, lamb live weight change and lamb milk intake are relatively poor estimators of the milk yield of singleton-rearing ewes obtained by the “oxytocin” method. Additionally, udder dimensions, milk yield and lamb milk intake do not give an accurate prediction of growth rates of singleton lambs. These results emphasize that there is a difference between ewe milk production potential and lamb milk intake, which need to be considered when estimating milk production in non-dairy animals.  相似文献

In a woman suckling twins it became apparent that both suckling-induced and precisely timed, spontaneous bursts of milk ejection were occurring. Observations on days 14, 28, 56, and 112 of lactation disclosed highly significnat increases in intervals between episodes of spontaneous milk ejection. Furthermore, at all stages of lactation the interval between a feed and the next episode of spontaneous ejection was significantly longer than the interval between spontaneous ejections. The decrease in frequency of episodes of spontaneous milk ejection during lactation may be related to the decreasing release of prolactin in response to suckling. Spontaneous milk-ejection episodes are felt only when the breast is full and may signal its readiness for a further suckling episode. Such bursts of milk ejection may stimulate the suckling response in babies, suggesting that rigid three- or four-hour feeding regimens may be unphysiological and pose a threat to the success of breast-feeding in the early postnatal period.  相似文献

Milk is a source of bioactive molecules with wide-ranging functions. Among these, the immune properties have been the best characterised. In recent years, it has become apparent that besides the immunoglobulins, milk also contains a range of minor immune-related proteins that collectively form a significant first line of defence against pathogens, acting both within the mammary gland itself as well as in the digestive tract of the suckling neonate. We have used proteomics technologies to characterise the repertoire of host-defence-related milk proteins in detail, revealing more than 100 distinct gene products in milk, of which at least 15 are known host-defence-related proteins. Those having intrinsic antimicrobial activity likely function as effector proteins of the local mucosal immune defence (e.g. defensins, cathelicidins and the calgranulins). Here, we focus on the activities and biological roles of the cathelicidins and mammary serum amyloid A. The function of the immune-related milk proteins that do not have intrinsic antimicrobial activity is also discussed, notably lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, RNase4, RNase5/angiogenin and cartilage-glycoprotein 39 kDa. Evidence is shown that at least some of these facilitate recognition of microbes, resulting in the activation of innate immune signalling pathways in cells associated with the mammary and/or gut mucosal surface. Finally, the contribution of the bacteria in milk to its functionality is discussed. These investigations are elucidating how an effective first line of defence is achieved in the bovine mammary gland and how milk contributes to optimal digestive function in the suckling calf. This study will contribute to a better understanding of the health benefits of milk, as well as to the development of high-value ingredients from milk.  相似文献

A fast and reliable method for the identification of milk from different mammalians was developed by using 31P NMR metabolite profile of milk serum coupled to multivariate analysis (PCA and classification models UNEQ, SIMCA and K-NN). Ten milk samples from six different mammalians, relevant to human nutrition (human, cow, donkey, mare, goat, sheep), were analyzed and eight monophosphorylated components were identified and quantified: phosphocreatine (PCr), glycerophosphorylcholine (GPC), glycerophosphorylethanolamine (GPE), N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphate (NAcGlu-1P), lactose-1-phosphate (Lac-1P), galactose-1-phosphate (Gal-1P), phosphorylcholine (PC), glucose-6-phosphate (Glu-6P). PCA showed interesting clustering based on the animal genus. K-NN can be successfully used to discriminate between donkey and cow samples while UNEQ class-modeling resulted more suitable for compliance verification. Results confirm the natural variability of milk samples among different species. These data highlight the great potentials of NMR/multivariate analysis combined method in the rapid analysis of phosphorylated milk serum metabolites for milk origin assessment and milk adulteration detection.  相似文献

Animals suckled in litters of 3 kits had the highest milk intake and live weight and kits suckled in litters of 9 had the lowest milk intake, live weight and daily gain. In terms of milk intake per g gain kits in litters of 6 were the most efficient, with 4.1 g milk per g body gain. The metabolizable energy requirement for maintenance (MEm) was estimated to 448 kJ/kg(0.75 and the efficiency of utilization of ME for body gain (kg) to 0.67, the estimates being higher (MEm) or in good agreement with previous findings (kg) in suckling mink kits.  相似文献
