Habitats may have dynamics that exist independently of the population densities of species occupying the habitat. For example, ephemeral habitat patches may disappear regardless of whether a particular species is present or not. Such habitat dynamics are frequently modelled by ignoring age-related variation in patch turnover rates. This can be thought of as a temporally implicit approach. An alternative, temporally explicit approach involves using age-structured models in order to describe variations in habitat dynamics. Simple models of coexistence between competing species show that temporally implicit models may be misleading where there is age-related variation in patch dynamics. Changing the shape of the patch survivorship function but not the average patch survivorship can result in mutual extinction, monocultures or coexistence of an inferior and a superior competitor. An explicit treatment of habitat demography may therefore offer improved predictive models and alternative landscape management strategies.  相似文献

The density of a Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) population, which has been in stable habitat conditions and free from hunting and predation, was investigated by direct observation of serows at Kusoudomari (336 ha), Wakinosawa village, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, during 1977–89. The vegetation, composed of mature mixed forest ofThujopsis with deciduous trees (43.2%), secondary forest of deciduous trees (23.4%) and a plantation of coniferous trees (30.0%) showed little change during the study period. The serows were counted 17 times each winter for 14 consecutive years. The serow population maintained a stable density with a mean of 12.5 individuals km−2 (SD=1.4) ranging from 8.6 to 14.6 km−2. The ratio of the proportion of kids (<1 year old) to serows more than 1 year old decreased, but density did not decrease during the study period. Though extremely severe winters with heavy snowfall in 1984–86 caused a decline in serow density, the density recovered within a few years. It was considered that the stability of the serow density resulted mainly from the stable food supply and the lack of human disturbance, such as forest cutting in the habitat. Stable population density for a long period is probably related to the social organization of the serow.  相似文献

Target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase controls cell growth and metabolism in response to nutrient availability. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, TOR complex 1 (TORC1) promotes vegetative growth and inhibits sexual differentiation in the presence of ample nutrients. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of mutants with similar phenotypes as TORC1 mutants, in that they initiate sexual differentiation even in nutrient‐rich conditions. In most mutants identified, TORC1 activity is downregulated and the mutated genes are involved in tRNA expression or modification. Expression of tRNA precursors decreases when cells undergo sexual differentiation. Furthermore, overexpression of tRNA precursors prevents TORC1 downregulation upon nitrogen starvation and represses the initiation of sexual differentiation. Based on these observations, we propose that tRNA precursors operate in the S. pombe TORC1 pathway to switch growth mode from vegetative to reproductive.  相似文献

Abstract In a restinga habitat of southeastern Brazil, we studied some aspects of the thermal biology of two sympatric skinks (Mabuya macrorhyncha and Mabuya agilis) with distinct microhabitat preferences. The two species did not differ significantly in their mean body temperature. Sex and body size did not explain body temperature variation within either species. The body temperature of both species is significantly affected by air temperature, but only that of M. agilis is significantly influenced by sand surface temperature, presumably due to its more terrestrial habit compared to M. macrorhyncha. We found no significant seasonal variation in body temperature for either species, although environmental temperatures varied seasonally, indicating that both species may be selecting an optimal range of body temperatures, possibly through behavioural thermoregulation.  相似文献

Summary In order to document the natural CO2 environment of the moss Hylocomium splendens, and ascertain whether or not the moss was adapted to this, and its interactions with other microenvironmental factors, two studies were carried out. Firstly, the seasonal variations of CO2 concentration, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), tissue water content and temperature were measured in the natural microenvironment of H. splendens in a subarctic forest during the summer period (July–September). Secondly, the photosynthetic responses of the species to controlled CO2 concentrations, PAR, temperature, and hydration were measured in the laboratory. CO2 concentrations around the upper parts of the plant, when PAR was above the compensation point (30 mol m–2 s–1), were mostly between 400 and 450 ppm. They occasionally increased up to 1143 ppm for short periods. PAR flux densities below saturating light levels for photosynthesis (100 mol m–2 s–1), occurred during 65% (July), 76% (August) and 96% (September) of the hours of the summer period. The temperature optimum of photosynthesis was 20° C: this temperature coincided with PAR above the compensation point during 5%, 6% and 0% of the time in July, August and September, respectively. Optimal hydration of tissues was infrequent. Hence PAR, temperature and water limit CO2 uptake for most of the growing season. Our data suggest that the higher than normal ambient CO2 concentration in the immediate environment of the plant counteracts some of the limitations in PAR supply that it experiences in its habitat. This species already experiences concentrations of atmospheric CO2 predicted to occur over the next 50 years.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that impacts of fungal pathogens on tree recruitment tend to be greater in the forest understory than in openings, and that shade-tolerant trees are less vulnerable than shade-intolerant species. To investigate the role that harmful soil fungi may have in reducing regeneration of temperate trees, we applied fungicide to buried seeds of matched pairs of species differing in their relative shade tolerance and/or successional status (Acer negundo versus Acer saccharum, Prunus virginiana versus Prunus serotina, and Pinus strobus versus Tsuga canadensis), in three habitats that differed in their degree of openness (old field, forest gap, and forest understory). Our results indicated that soil fungi reduced germination of A. negundo, P. virginiana, P. serotina. and T. canadensis, and reduced viability of ungerminated seeds of P. strobus; no significant effects of fungi on seeds of A. saccharum were detected. However, we found seeds were not less likely to survive following burial in forest understory than in gaps. As well, results for only one species pair (A. negundo versus A. saccharum) were consistent with the prediction that shade-intolerant or successional species should be more susceptible to fungal attack than mature forest species. These results contrast with other studies of temperate and especially tropical forest trees.  相似文献

Databases describing branch gas exchange ofPicea abies L. at two montane forest sites, Lägeren, Switzerland (National Forschungsprojekt 14 of the Schweizerische Nationalfonds) and Oberwarmensteinach, Germany (Bayerische Forschungsgruppe Forsttoxikologie), were analyzed in conjunction with a physiologically based model. Parameter estimates for describing carboxylase kinetics, electron transport, and stomatal function were derived, utilizing information from both single factor dependencies and diurnal time course measurements of gas exchange. Data subsets were used for testing the model at the branch level. Most of the observed variation in gas exchange characteristics can be explained with the model, while a number of systematic errors remain unexplained. Factors seen as contributing to the unexplained residual variation and not included in the model are light acclimation, degree of damage in adjustment to pollutant deposition, needle age, and cold stress effects. Nevertheless, a set of parameter values has been obtained for general application with spruce, e.g., for use in calculating canopy flux rates and to aid in planning of focused leaf and canopy level experiments. The value of the model for estimating fluxes between the forest and the atmosphere must be evaluated together with measurements at the stand level.  相似文献

Summary Three oldfield annual species (Abutilon theophrasti Medic., Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and Setaria lutescens (Weigel) Hubb.) were investigated. All three developed substantial mycorrhizal infections when inoculated with Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerd. Mycorrhizal infection dramatically increased phosphorus content and dry weight of both Abutilon and Ambrosia, but did not significantly affect dry weight and only modestly increased phosphorus content of Setaria. These results were consistent with a lower level of infection and much greater root density in Setaria than in the other species. When Abutilon was grown in the presence of Setaria, mycorrhizal infection had no effect on Abutilon phosphorus content or dry weight. The depressive effect of Setaria on the response to inoculation in Abutilon was probably not caused by water soluble allelopathic chemicals from Setaria roots, but soil leachate from Abutilon plants did inhibit infection in other Abutilon plants. The data were consistent with the hypothesis that the very high root density and effective soil exploitation of Setaria reduced the benefit from mycorrhizal infection in Abutilon via phosphorus depletion in a large proportion of the available soil volume. Furthermore, even if mycorrhizal infection were capable of increasing phosphorus content of Abutilon in the presence of Setaria, the very high competitive ability of Setaria for nitrogen in the soil could have reduced the benefit of an enhanced phosphorus content. Carbon isotope ratios were reduced in Abutilon by mycorrhizal infection, indicating a possible reduction in water use efficiency.  相似文献

The capacity of Elodea nuttallii (Planch.) St. John and Elodea canadensis Michx. to remove nitrogen from water was evaluated in laboratory experiment. The growth rate of plants and their effect on the nitrogen level of hypertrophic Lake Zwemlust (the Netherlands) as well as on lake water enriched with nitrogen were investigated. The plants grew best in water enriched with up to 2 mg NH4-Nl–1 and 2 mg NH4-Nl–1 plus 2 mg NO3 Nl–1. During a 14 day experiment, plants absorbed from 75% to 90% of nitrogen. Higher nitrogen concentration than 4 mg l–1 had a negative effect on growth of both species. Elodea nuttallii and E. canadensis prefer NOinf4/p+ over NOinf4/p– when both ions were present in water in equal concentrations.  相似文献

Enhanced ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation and water deficit affect plant growth and development. We determined the effects of UVB and drought stress on growth parameters and chemical attributes of two ecotypes (alpine and prairie) of Stellaria longipes under controlled-environment conditions. Clonal ramets of these ecotypes were grown under three UVB levels (0, 5, and 10 kJ m−2 d−1) and exposed to two watering regimes (well watered and drought stressed) for 21 days. Compared to the alpine, the prairie ecotype was taller, had higher number of nodes, and greater leaf area and specific leaf weight (leaf dry weight: leaf area), which resulted in increased dry matter in this ecotype. Overall, ‘prairie’ was higher in total chlorophyll (Chl), but lower in Chla:b ratio, flavonoids, and ethylene, than ‘alpine’. In both ecotypes, UVB and drought stress reduced growth and dry matter, whereas UVB increased carotenoids and flavonoids. Drought stress decreased ethylene evolution. These characteristics were also determined in plants growing in the field. In the field-growing plants, ‘prairie’ had higher growth and dry matter, but lower Chla:b ratio and flavonoids, than ‘alpine’. The two ecotypes responded differentially to UVB and watering regime, as ‘prairie’ appeared to be more sensitive to UVB and drought stress than ‘alpine’.  相似文献

The glutathione (GSH) metabolic characteristics and redox balance in three ecotypes of reed (Phragmites communis), swamp reed (SR), dune reed (DR), and heavy salt meadow reed (HSMR), from different habitats in desert regions of northwest China were investigated. The DR possessed the highest rate of GSH biosynthesis and metabolism with the lowest levels of total and reduced GSH and its biosynthetic precursors, gamma-glutamylcysteine (gamma-EC) and cysteine (Cys), of the three reed ecotypes. This suggests that a higher rate of GSH biosynthesis and metabolism, but not GSH accumulation, might be involved in the adaptation of this terrestrial reed ecotype to its dry habitat. The HSMR shared this profile although it exhibited the highest reduced thiol levels of the three ecotypes. Two key enzymes in the Calvin-cycle possessing exposed sulfhydryl groups, NADP(+)-dependent glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PD) and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase), and other two key enzymes in the pentose-phosphate pathway (PPP), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD), had very similar activities in the three reed ecotypes. Compared to the SR, the DR and HSMR had higher ratios of NADPH/NADP+ and NADH/NAD+, indicating that a more reduced redox status in the plant cells might be involved in the survival and adaptation of the two terrestrial reed ecotypes to long-term drought and salinity, respectively. These results suggest that changes of GSH metabolism and redox balance were important components of the adaptation of reed, a hydrophilic plant, to more extreme dune and saline habitats. The coordinated up-regulations of the rate of GSH biosynthesis and metabolism and reduction state of redox status of plant cells, conferred on the plant high resistance or tolerance to long-term drought and salinity.  相似文献

Variations of cellular total lipid, total carbohydrate and total protein content of two dominant bloom-forming species (Skeletonema costatum and Prorocentrum donghaiense) isolated from the Yangtze River Estuary were examined under six different nutrient conditions in batch cultures. Daily samples were collected to estimate the cell growth, nutrient concentration and three biochemical compositions content during 7 days for S. costatum and the same sampling procedure was done every other day during 10 days for P. donghaiense. Results showed that for S. costatum, cellular total lipid content increased under phosphorus (P) limitation, but not for nitrogen (N) limitation; cellular carbohydrate were accumulated under both N and P limitation; cellular total protein content of low nutrient concentration treatments were significantly lower than that of high nutrient concentration treatments. For P. donghaiense, both cellular total lipid content and total carbohydrate content were greatly elevated as a result of N and P exhaustion, but cellular total protein content had no significant changes under nutrient limitation. In addition, the capability of accumulation of three biochemical constituents of P. donghaiense was much stronger than that of S. costatum. Pearson correlation showed that for both species, the biochemical composition of three constituents (lipid, carbohydrate and protein) had no significant relationship with extracellular N concentration, but had positive correlation with extracellular and intracellular P concentration. The capability of two species to accumulate cellular total lipid and carbohydrate under nutrient limitation may help them accommodate the fluctuating nutrient condition of the Yangtze River Estuary. The different responses of two species of cellular biochemical compositions content under different nutrient conditions may provide some evidence to explain the temporal characteristic of blooms caused by two species in the Yangtze River Estuary.  相似文献

Our study investigates the effect of iron deficiency on morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters of two Medicago ciliaris ecotypes (Mateur TN11.11 and Soliman TN8.7). Iron deficiency was imposed by making plants grow, either in an iron free or by the addition of CaCO3/NaHCO3 to the Hoagland nutrient solution. Our results showed that both true and bicarbonate Fe-deficiency induced the characteristic iron-chlorosis symptoms, although the intensity of the symptoms was ecotype-dependent. This variability in tolerance to iron deficiency was also displayed by other morphological parameters such as root biomass and chlorophyll concentration. Besides, iron chlorosis induced an increase in biochemical parameters: the iron reducing capacity (measured in vivo on root segments and in vitro on plasma membrane enriched vesicles) and rhizosphere acidification by enhancement of H+-ATPase activity were more pronounced in Mateur ecotype. These findings suggest that Soliman ecotype was more sensitive than Mateur one to iron chlorosis.  相似文献

Populations of the common wild rice of AsiaO. rufipogon Griff. (=Oryza perennis Moench) were studied with regard to interrelations between life-history traits and habitat conditions. They showed a perennial-annual continuum and differed in reproductive allocation and many other traits. Perennial populations were found in deep swamps, while annual populations were in shallower, temporary swamps which were parched in the dry season. The perennial and annual types tended to be in association with other perennial and annual plants, respectively, suggesting their niche differentiation. Intermediate perennial-annual populations were in communities with a high species diversity. In one population, plants growing on the periphery of the swamp were of annual and those in deeper center were of perennial type. Another population seemed to be differentiated into an annual and an intermediate type in accordance with different degrees of habitat disturbance.
