Abstract Bird assemblages generally are no longer regarded as stable entities, but rather as fluctuating in response to many factors. Australia's highly variable climate is likely to result in a high degree of dynamism in its bird assemblages, yet few studies have investigated variation on an inter‐annual temporal scale. We compared 2 year‐long samples of the bird assemblages of a series of highly fragmented buloke Allocasuarina luehmannii (Casuarinaceae) woodland remnants in south‐eastern Australia, the first sample taken in 1994–95 and the second in 2001–02. Bird densities were almost three times higher in the second period than in the first. Mean species richness also was significantly higher. Species richness of each individual site was unrelated between the 2 years. Minimum species turnover was 63% and was higher, on average, for migratory and nomadic than for sedentary species. Therefore, site‐level bird assemblage composition was markedly different between the two survey periods and, on average, the assemblage composition of each site bore greater resemblance to those of other sites in the same year than to that of the same site in the other survey period. Most species changed substantially in their distribution among remnants between the two periods. The change in distribution of most species did not differ significantly from that expected if the species had redistributed at random among the sites. This suggests that although the remnant vegetation of the area is highly fragmented with minimal interpatch connectivity, bird movements among remnants are relatively frequent. Inter‐annual variability in Australian bird assemblages may be higher than is commonly recognized. In such dynamic systems, we must be cautious when extrapolating from the findings of short‐term studies to longer temporal scales, especially in relation to conservation management. A greater understanding of the processes driving distributional patterns is likely to enable better predictions of species’ responses to habitat change. 相似文献

The system of rights in cattle among the Nandi of western Kenya is built on a paradox: wives' predominant rights in certain categories of cattle vs. a strong public ideology assigning cattle control to men. Various Nandi categories of cattle and the structure of rights in them are described. Husbands' and wives' interests at times conflict; the negotiation of such conflicts is explored through analysis of several case studies. These studies show that it is possible, though not common, for wives to use traditional legal processes to counter husbands' herd management decisions. It is suggested that this possibility, and the potential loss of face it entails, explains why husbands rarefy take actions contrary to wives' rights in livestock. Different rhetorical strategies of men and women in talking about rights in cattle, and emphasis on different aspects of customary law, are also discussed. This discussion is related to the emerging theory of customary law as the result of conflicts negotiated in the political context of colonialism. Ongoing economic changes are eroding wives' positions in negotiations over cattle ownership. Literature on other African societies is reviewed, showing similar patterns of erosion of women's property rights, and differing interpretations of customary rights from those formalized in customary law. 相似文献

Flight initiation distance (FID) is the distance between a potential threat and the point at which a potential prey flees. Animals may modify their FID to compensate for increased risk generated by external/extrinsic factors such as habitat type, visibility, group size, time of year, predator‐approach velocity, and distance to burrow, as well as internal/intrinsic factors such as physical condition, body temperature, crypsis, and morphological antipredator defenses. The intrinsic speed at which an animal can escape a predator is a factor that should influence FID. We studied the relationship between an individual's intrinsic escape speed and FID in yellow‐bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) to determine whether marmots compensated for slower escape speeds by fleeing at greater distances. We found no evidence of risk compensation. Rather, we found that slower marmots tolerated closer approaches. This behavioral syndrome may be explained by a coevolution of FID and escape speed in determining an individual's antipredator behavior, an idea upon which we expand. 相似文献

Left,right or both? Estimating and improving accuracy of one‐side‐only geometric morphometric analyses of cranial variation 下载免费PDF全文
Procrustes‐based geometric morphometric analyses of bilaterally symmetric structures are often performed using only one side. This is particularly common in studies of cranial variation in mammals and other vertebrates. When one is not interested in quantifying asymmetry, landmarking one side, instead of both, reduces the number of variables as well as the time and costs of data collection. It is assumed that the loss of information in the other half, on which landmarks are not digitized, is negligible, but this has seldom been tested. Using 10 samples of mammalian crania and a total of more than 500 specimens, and five different landmark configurations, I demonstrate that this assumption is indeed easily met for size. For shape, in contrast, one‐side landmarking has potentially more severe consequences on the estimates of similarity relationships in a sample. In this respect, microevolutionary analyses of small differences are particularly affected, whereas macroevolutionary studies are fairly robust. In almost all instances, however, a simple preliminary operation improves accuracy by making one‐side‐only shape data more similar to those obtained by landmarking both sides. The same operation also makes estimates of allometry more accurate and improves the visualization. This operation consists in estimating the missing side by a mirror reflection of bilateral landmarks. In the Supporting Information, I exemplify how this can be easily done using free user‐friendly software. I also provide an example data set for readers to repeat and learn the steps of this simple procedure. 相似文献

Rubbing behaviors are well known in several primate species and are usually seen as scent-marking behaviors, with several functions proposed but still widely debated. The genus Alouatta is highly sexually dimorphic and a suitable subject for the study of sexual and hierarchical divergences associated with rubbing behavior: males should mark more than females, and dominant individuals more than subordinate ones. Three wild groups of Southern brown howler monkeys, Alouatta guariba clamitans, were studied at Morro Geisler, Indaial, Brazil, from September 2004 to February 2005. One hundred and twenty-three rubbing episodes were registered; data on performers and associated contexts showed that anogenital, dorsum and hyoid regions were the most often rubbed. Adult males rubbed significantly above expected levels, whereas subordinated females and juveniles tended to rub below the expected levels. Females were the main performers of anogenital rubbing, often preceded by defecation. The predominance of rubbing in males probably serves an important function in intrasexual communication and social interactions. Intrasexual competition can also lead to a relationship between rubbing and social status in females. Hyoid and sternum rubbing by males are probably agonistic signals associated with extragroup conflict. The possible cleaning function of anogenital rubbing does not preclude a communicative function. Whether rubbing behavior in howlers is solely for the function of scent marking or can also be a visual signal (e.g. as a display or to color the substrate with pigment) requires further study. 相似文献

Individual specialization in diet or foraging behavior within apparently generalist populations has been described for many species, especially in polar and temperate marine environments, where resource distribution is relatively predictable. It is unclear, however, whether and how increased environmental variability – and thus reduced predictability of resources – due to global climate change will affect individual specialization. We determined the within‐ and among‐individual components of the trophic niche and the within‐individual repeatability of δ13C and δ15N in feathers and red blood cells of individual female southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome) across 7 years. We also investigated the effect of environmental variables (Southern Annular Mode, Southern Oscillation Index, and local sea surface temperature anomaly) on the isotopic values, as well as the link between stable isotopes and female body mass, clutch initiation dates, and total clutch mass. We observed consistent red blood cell δ13C and δ15N values within individuals among years, suggesting a moderate degree of within‐individual specialization in C and N during the prebreeding period. However, the total niche width was reduced and individual specialization not present during the premolt period. Despite significant interannual differences in isotope values of C and N and environmental conditions, none of the environmental variables were linked to stable isotope values and thus able to explain phenotypic plasticity. Furthermore, neither the within‐individual nor among‐individual effects of stable isotopes were found to be related to female body mass, clutch initiation date, or total clutch mass. In conclusion, our results emphasize that the degree of specialization within generalist populations can vary over the course of 1 year, even when being consistent within the same season across years. We were unable to confirm that environmental variability counteracts individual specialization in foraging behavior, as phenotypic plasticity in δ13C and δ15N was not linked to any of the environmental variables studied. 相似文献

Vigilance is a key to the early detection of predators, but may be costly if it impairs foraging efficiency. Hence, we would expect vigilance to be suppressed and/or counter‐selected in predator‐free environments, although this might depend on the environmental drivers influencing perceived predation risk. We studied vigilance in two populations of Sitka black‐tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) on Haida Gwaii (Canada) which have not been exposed to predators since they colonized the study islands approx. 60 yr ago. In this context, anti‐predator behavior should not have any obvious current benefit. Moreover, its maintenance should be particularly costly in our study populations because these deer have depleted their food resources and, thus, anti‐predator behaviors should interfere with time spent searching for scarce resources. We used bait stations equipped with camera traps to assess vigilance under standardized feeding conditions. We expected to observe lower vigilance levels than those observed elsewhere in locations with predators. We investigated how vigilance varied in relation to the amount of bait, the level of visibility, and between day and night. During the day, deer spent, on average, 14% of their time in overt vigilance during foraging bouts, a level similar to, although in the lower range of, values reported at sites where predators are present. Levels of vigilance were lower at night, and decreased with increasing visibility, but not during the day. Deer were less vigilant when bait availability was high, but only when visibility was also high. We discuss why the maintenance of vigilance is here best explained by the ghosts of predators past, and how, at the temporal scale of a few generations, the ecological factors driving vigilance levels might override the absence of significant risk from large predators. 相似文献

The management of malignant cutaneous melanoma is problematic. Current clinical prognostic factors do not adequately predict disease recurrence and overall survival in a significant subset of patients. Adjuvant therapies for melanoma are notoriously toxic and associated with significant morbidity. Furthermore, it has been difficult to predict which patients will respond best to these treatments, if at all. DNA and RNA biomarkers have been developed to help overcome these problems. Biomarkers have been shown to upstage patients with melanoma, but are the assays sensitive and specific enough for clinical use as predictors of disease outcome or treatment response? We review our experience with DNA and RNA biomarkers in terms of their prognostic and predictive capabilities in malignant melanoma and outline their likely role in the future of melanoma staging, surveillance, and treatment. © 2005 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Morphology is commonly used as a predictor of ecological relationships among species when studying local assemblages of Neotropical birds. Nevertheless, most evidence supporting ecomorphological correspondence in birds comes from studies of communities and not from local assemblages and, moreover, from temperate latitudes. To increase our understanding of ecomorphological correspondence in Neotropical assemblages, we used three multivariate approaches to evaluate correspondence between morphological and foraging behavior data in a tyrant‐flycatcher assemblage (N= 12 species) in the Santa Marta Mountains in Colombia. Principal components analyses revealed similar species ordinations when using morphological measurements (beak size and shape, tarsus length, wing length, and tail length) or behavioral data (behavioral types of searching for prey and prey capture) separately. Discriminant function analyses tested the ability of morphological traits to predict foraging behavior, showing that more than 90% of all measured individuals (N= 267) were correctly classified in previously defined categories of search and attack behavior. Finally, Canonical correlation analyses revealed a significant correlation between morphological data and two independent datasets of search and attack behavior. Our results demonstrate that morphology can accurately predict ecology in an assemblage of Neotropical tyrannids, and similar results have been reported in previous studies of temperate Tyrant‐flycatchers. Our results also show that bill size and shape, wing length, and tarsus length are the best predictors of foraging behavior in this assemblage. Testing for ecomorphological correspondence in other Neotropical taxa would help identify subsets of phenotypic traits that could be used for a practical, but reliable, determination of ecological relationships within different assemblages. 相似文献

Seasonal changes in cell‐mediated immunocompetence and mass gain in nestling barn swallows: a parasite‐mediated effect? 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Reproduction in seasonal environments is usually timed so peak demand for food by offspring coincides with peak availability. Hence, late breeders will encounter a scarcity of food. Since parasite populations grow during the reproductive season of their hosts, late reproducing animals will also face an increasing challenge by parasites. We hypothesised that seasonal decrease in food availability and seasonal increase in parasite abundance will cause a trade-off between growth and immune function. This prediction was tested in nestling barn swallows ( Hirundo rustica ) from first and second broods. Nestlings from second broods mounted stronger T cell mediated immune responses to a challenge with a novel antigen, but had lower rates of mass gain, than nestlings from first broods, consistent with the prediction. Broods in which at least one nestling died had lower levels of T cell mediated immune response, but not lower rates of mass gain, than broods without mortality, suggesting that brood reduction is mediated through an inability of offspring to defend themselves against parasites rather than an inability to grow. Possible mechanisms include scarcity of specific nutrients needed for immune responses, and/or parasites being concentrated on a single or few nestlings. 相似文献

A pair‐living social organisation can typically be explained by obligate biparental care. We investigated pair‐living in the absence of biparental care in the Australian sleepy lizard, Tiliqua rugosa, which forms exceptionally strong pair bonds. We fitted 10 lizards, five male–female pairs, with Global Positioning System (GPS) recorders and continuously monitored social associations and separations between active pair partners, based on location records taken every 10 min over 3 mo. Males temporarily separated and reunited the pair more frequently than females, but females also contributed to the maintenance of the pair bond. These behavioural data were consistent with the hypothesis that females successfully coerce males into associations with one female. Lower frequencies of social association between pair partners once mating had finished support this interpretation. Males that are coerced into pair associations appear to experience higher costs of pair‐living than females, because males initiated temporary separations of the pair more frequently than females. Males showed higher movement activity and remained active later each day. This sex bias in activity may be an important mechanism to mitigate the higher costs of pair‐living for males. Costs for males might include within‐pair competition for food as females appear more competitive. Our study provides detailed empirical data on a lizard pair bond and provides important insights into pair‐living in the absence of biparental care. 相似文献

Epidemiological studies have shown that obese subjects have an increased risk of developing triple‐negative breast cancer (TNBC) and an overall reduced survival. However, the relation between obesity and TNBC remains difficult to understand. We hypothesize that apelin, an adipokine whose levels are increased in obesity, could be a major factor contributing to both tumour growth and metastatization in TNBC obese patients. We observed that development of obesity under high‐fat diet in TNBC tumour‐bearing mice significantly increased tumour growth. By showing no effect of high‐fat diet in obesity‐resistant mice, we demonstrated the necessity to develop obesity‐related disorders to increase tumour growth. Apelin mRNA expression was also increased in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and tumours of obese mice. We further highlighted that the reproduction of obesity‐related levels of apelin in lean mice led to an increased TNBC growth and brain metastases formation. Finally, injections of the apelinergic antagonist F13A to obese mice significantly reduced TNBC growth, suggesting that apelinergic system interference could be an interesting therapeutic strategy in the context of obesity and TNBC. 相似文献

We have compared structures of 78 proteins determined by both NMR and X-ray methods. It is shown that X-ray and NMR structures of the same protein have more differences than various X-ray structures obtained for the protein, and even more than various NMR structures of the protein. X-ray and NMR structures of 18 of these 78 proteins have obvious large-scale structural differences that seem to reflect a difference of crystal and solution structures. The other 60 pairs of structures have only small-scale differences comparable with differences between various X-ray or various NMR structures of a protein; we have analyzed these structures more attentively. One of the main differences between NMR and X-ray structures concerns the number of contacts per residue: (1) NMR structures presented in PDB have more contacts than X-ray structures at distances below 3.0 A and 4.5-6.5 A, and fewer contacts at distances of 3.0-4.5 A and 6.5-8.0 A; (2) this difference in the number of contacts is greater for internal residues than for external ones, and it is larger for beta-containing proteins than for all-alpha proteins. Another significant difference is that the main-chain hydrogen bonds identified in X-ray and NMR structures often differ. Their correlation is 69% only. However, analogous difference is found for refined and rerefined NMR structures, allowing us to suggest that the observed difference in interresidue contacts of X-ray and NMR structures of the same proteins is due mainly to a difference in mathematical treatment of experimental results. 相似文献
