Organic carbon and nitrogen isotope values (δ13C, δ15N) and C/N ratios of six sediment cores from six coastal lagoons (including the Oder Estuary) were measured to chart the coastal development and to reconstruct the local palaeoenvironments of the southern Baltic Sea region during the Holocene. In addition, δ13C, δ15N and C/N values of major organic matter sources in the coastal lagoons and their drainage areas are investigated to determine the origin of organic matter (i.e. terrigenous or marine) in the sediments: plankton, aquatic macrophytes, typical C3 shore plants and peat. The δ13C, δ15N and C/N values of the samples collected show the clearly identifiable stages in the development of the water bodies: post-glacial lake stages with sandy sedimentation, lacustrine phases with high autochthonous productivity, terrestrial stages with peat formation, sedimentation as a result of marine transgression, and brackish sedimentation after the formation of sand spits and barrier islands. These stages are the results of sea level changes in the region. The values allow derivation of differences in the palaeoenvironments of the lagoons in the study area. A distinct terrestrial input is evident in the sediments of the lagoonal Oder Estuary, which can be attributed to the direct inflow of the Oder River into the lagoon. The isotope and C/N values also suggest a contribution of C4 plant detritus for the water bodies in the northeastern part of the study area (Barther Bodden, Grabow). The burial of autochthonous organic matter (i.e. plankton, aquatic macrophytes) in the sediment could be derived for all lagoons in this investigation.  相似文献

We explored the use of carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) in sediment organic matter as proxy indicators of historical changes in the trophic state of Lake Taihu, the third largest freshwater lake in China. Stable isotope signatures in four sediment cores spanning the 20th century were compared with instrumental records of lake-water trophic state. The comparative study shows that, between ∼ ∼1950 and 1990 AD, the δ13C and δ15N of sediment organic matter throughout Lake Taihu increased along the trophic gradient from oligotrophy to eutrophy due to biological isotopic fractionation. However, in the 1990s, the trophic state of Lake Taihu diverged into two different trophic systems, a hypereutrophic western Lake Taihu dominated by blue-green algae and a mesoeutrophic eastern Lake Taihu dominated by vascular aquatic plants. During the post-1990 AD shift from mesoeutrophic to hypereutrophic state in western Lake Taihu, organic matter δ13C and δ15N decreased sharply in response to pronounced shifts in the aquatic ecosystem. The results indicate that 13C-depleted phytoplankton replaced macrophytes in western Lake Taihu. δ15N values in western Lake Taihu also decreased because of N2 fixation by cyanobacteria in this highly productive ecosystem. By contrast, in eastern Lake Taihu, organic matter δ13C and δ15N values show a post-1990 AD trend towards slightly lower values, but they remain higher than the long-term average. This recent 13C–enrichment of organic matter indicates that periods of high productivity in the restricted eastern sub-basin of Lake Taihu limited aqueous CO2 availability, causing a decrease in isotopic discrimination during photosynthesis. After ∼ ∼1990 AD, organic matter δ15N values for eastern Lake Taihu only dropped slightly, suggesting that the contribution of phytoplankton to the sediment organic matter increased slightly. Taken together, the results indicate that nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria probably played a much smaller role in primary productivity in this part of eastern Lake Taihu, compared with western Lake Taihu. Despite the complexity of carbon and nitrogen cycles in lakes, the agreement between the stable isotope signatures and instrumental records for Lake Taihu suggests that δ13C and δ15N in sediment organic matter are capable of recording important shifts in the spatial and temporal evolution of lake-water trophic state.  相似文献

The effects of anticoagulant EDTA and sodium heparin (SH) on stable carbon δ13C and nitrogen δ15N isotopic values of red blood cells (RBC) and blood plasma in juvenile blacktip reef sharks Carcharhinus melanopterus were analysed. Plasma preserved with anticoagulants was not isotopically distinct from plasma stored in no-additive control tubes but RBC δ15N values exhibited small enrichments when preserved with EDTA and SH. Results suggest EDTA and SH are viable anticoagulants for stable isotopic analyses of blood fractions but further studies are advised to validate results.  相似文献

We examined the effects of fertilizer application, especially the effects of fertigation and types of fertilizer (inorganic and organic) on yields and 15N and 13C values of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Saturn). Fertigation is a method in which an appropriate diluted liquid fertilizer is applied to the plants each time they are drip-irrigated. We developed a method of organic fertigation using corn steep liquor (CSL) as the liquid fertilizer, because it is an industrial byproduct of cornstarch manufacture and can be used very effectively. We compared fruit yield, mineral content, 15N value, and 13C value of tomatoes grown under three different fertilizer treatments, basal dressing: basal dressing with granular chemical fertilizer; inorganic fertigation: fertigation with liquid chemical fertilizer; and organic fertigation: fertigaion with CSL. Mineral contents of tomatoes grown with basal dressing were generally lower than those grown under either fertigation treatment. These results indicated that yields and mineral contents were influenced more by the method of fertilizer application than by whether the fertilizers were inorganic or organic. There were, however, significant differences in the 15N values of tomato fruits grown under different types of fertilizer applications, especially between inorganic and organic fertilizers. The 15N value of the chemical fertilizer used for basal dressing was 0.81 ± 0.45{}, that of the chemical fertilizer for fertigation was 0.00 ± 0.04{}, and that of CSL was 8.50 ± 0.71{}. The 15N values of the soils reflected the 15N values of the fertilizers. Moreover, the 15N values of the fruits corresponded to the 15N values of the applied fertilizers. The 15N values were 3.18 ± 1.34{} in the fruits grown with a basal dressing of chemical fertilizer, 0.30 ± 0.61 in those grown under inorganic fertigation, and 7.09 ± 0.68 in those grown under organic fertigation. On the other hand, although the 13C values in the soil also reflected the 13C values of the applied fertilizers, there was no significant difference in the 13C values of fruits among the different treatments. In conclusion, because the 15N values of fertilizers correlated well with those of the fruits, it may be possible to use 15N values as an indicator of organic products.  相似文献

Stable-isotope analysis (SIA) provides a valuable tool to address complex questions pertaining to elasmobranch ecology. Liver, a metabolically active, high turnover tissue (~166 days for 95% turnover), has the potential to reveal novel insights into recent feeding/movement behaviours of this diverse group. To date, limited work has used this tissue, but ecological application of SIA in liver requires consideration of tissue preparation techniques given the potential for high concentrations of urea and lipid that could bias δ13C and δ15N values (i.e., result in artificially lower δ13C and δ15N values). Here we investigated the effectiveness of (a) deionized water washing (WW) for urea removal from liver tissue and (b) chloroform-methanol for extraction of lipids from this lipid rich tissue. We then (a) established C:N thresholds for deriving ecologically relevant liver isotopic values given complications of removing all lipid and (b) undertook a preliminary comparison of δ13C values between tissue pairs (muscle and liver) to test if observed isotopic differences correlated with known movement behaviour. Tests were conducted on four large shark species: the dusky (DUS, Carcharhinus obscurus), sand tiger (RAG, Carcharias taurus), scalloped hammerhead (SCA, Sphyrna lewini) and white shark (GRE, Carcharodon carcharias). There was no significant difference in δ15N values between lipid-extracted (LE) liver and lipid-extracted/water washed (WW) treatments, however, WW resulted in significant increases in %N, δ13C and %C. Following lipid extraction (repeated three times), some samples were still biased by lipids. Our species-specific “C:N thresholds” provide a method to derive ecologically viable isotope data given the complexities of this lipid rich tissue (C:N thresholds of 4.0, 3.6, 4.7 and 3.9 for DUS, RAG, SCA and GRE liverLEWW tissue, respectively). The preliminary comparison of C:N threshold corrected liver and muscle δ13C values corresponded with movement/habitat behaviours for each shark; minor differences in δ13C values were observed for known regional movements of DUS and RAG (δ13CDiffs = 0.24 ± 0.99‰ and 0.57 ± 0.38‰, respectively), while SCA and GRE showed greater differences (1.24 ± 0.63‰ and 1.08 ± 0.71‰, respectively) correlated to large-scale movements between temperate/tropical and pelagic/coastal environments. These data provide an approach for the successful application of liver δ13C and δ15N values to examine elasmobranch ecology.  相似文献

Size-related diet shifts are important characteristics of fish trophodynamics. Here, body size–related changes in muscle δ15N and δ13C of four coral reef fishes, Acanthurus nigrofuscus (herbivore), Chaetodon lunulatus (corallivore), Chromis xanthura (planktivore) and Plectropomus leopardus (piscivore) were investigated at two locations in the Solomon Islands. All four species occupied distinct isotopic niches and the concurrent δ13C′ values of C. xanthura and P. leopardus suggested a common planktonic production source. Size-related shifts in δ15N, and thus trophic level, were observed in C. xanthura, C. lunulatus and P. leopardus, and these trends varied between location, indicating spatial differences in trophic ecology. A literature review of tropical fishes revealed that positive δ15N-size trends are common while negative δ15N-size trends are rare. Size-δ15N trends fall into approximately equal groups representing size-based feeding within a food chain, and that associated with a basal resource shift and occurs in conjunction with changes in production source, indicated by δ13C. The review also revealed large scale differences in isotope-size trends and this, combined with small scale location differences noted earlier, highlights a high degree of plasticity in the reef fishes studied. This suggests that trophic size analysis of reef fishes would provide a productive avenue to identify species potentially vulnerable to reef impacts as a result of constrained trophic behaviour.  相似文献

Much of the primatology literature on stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) has focused on African and New World species, with comparatively little research published on Asian primates. Here we present hair δ13C and δ15N isotope values for a sample of 33 long-tailed macaques from Singapore. We evaluate the suggestion by a previous researcher that forest degradation and biodiversity loss in Singapore have led to a decline in macaque trophic level. The results of our analysis indicated significant spatial variability in δ13C but not δ15N. The range of variation in δ13C was consistent with a diet based on C3 resources, with one group exhibiting low values consistent with a closed canopy environment. Relative to other macaque species from Europe and Asia, the macaques from Singapore exhibited a low mean δ13C value but mid-range mean δ15N value. Previous research suggesting a decline in macaque trophic level is not supported by the results of our study.  相似文献

Understanding spatial linkages between areas used by migratory animals during the annual cycle is fundamental to their conservation. Stable isotope measurements of animal tissues can be a valuable tool in understanding spatial connectivity and migration phenology of migratory wildlife. We inferred natal origins of two migratory passerines, European Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca and European Robin Erithacus rubecula, captured during autumn migration in the Italian Alps, by combining feather δ2H (δ2Hf) and ring recovery data. We used a spatially explicit likelihood-based method to assign individuals to a precipitation δ2H surface calibrated to represent feather δ2H, together with the directional probability of origin from ring recoveries. The highest probabilities of origin for most individuals of both species were in central and north-eastern Europe. Seasonal trends in δ2Hf, which described the species’ migratory phenology through the Italian Alps, were correlated with feather δ13C, δ15N and δ34S values, indicating strong spatial discrimination related to continental patterns for these isotopes. We demonstrate how this combined information can define catchment areas and migratory connectivity of birds intercepted in the Alps. We highlight the importance of ringing data in defining directional priors to define Bayesian-based probability surfaces using continental δ2Hf isoscapes, and how such information can be used to inform estimates of migratory connectivity.  相似文献

Complete panmixia across the entire range of a species is a relatively rare phenomenon; however, this pattern may be found in species that have limited philopatry and frequent dispersal. American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhyncos) provide a unique opportunity to examine the role of long-distance dispersal in facilitating gene flow in a species recently reported as panmictic across its broad breeding range. This species is also undergoing a range expansion, with new colonies arising hundreds of kilometers outside previous range boundaries. In this study, we use a multiple stable isotope (δ2H, δ13C, δ15N) approach to examine feather isotopic structuring at 19 pelican colonies across North America, with the goal of establishing an isotopic basemap that could be used for assigning individuals at newly established breeding sites to source colonies. Within-colony isotopic variation was extremely high, exceeding 100‰ in δ2H within some colonies (with relatively high variation also observed for δ13C and δ15N). The high degree of within-site variation greatly limited the utility of assignment-based approaches (42% cross-validation success rate; range: 0–90% success). Furthermore, clustering algorithms identified four likely isotopic clusters; however, those clusters were generally unrelated to geographic location. Taken together, the high degree of within-site isotopic variation and lack of geographically-defined isotopic clusters preclude the establishment of an isotopic basemap for American white pelicans, but may indicate that a high incidence of long-distance dispersal is facilitating gene flow, leading to genetic panmixia.  相似文献

Stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) are being widely applied in ecological research but there has been a call for ecologists to determine species- and tissue-specific diet discrimination factors (?13C and ?15N) for their study animals. For large sharks stable isotopes may provide an important tool to elucidate aspects of their ecological roles in marine systems, but laboratory based controlled feeding experiments are impractical. By utilizing commercial aquaria, we estimated ?15N and ?13C of muscle, liver, vertebral cartilage and a number of organs of three large sand tiger (Carcharias taurus) and one large lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) under a controlled feeding regime. For all sharks mean ± SD for ?15N and ?13C in lipid extracted muscle using lipid extracted prey data were 2.29‰ ± 0.22 and 0.90‰ ± 0.33, respectively. The use of non-lipid extracted muscle and prey resulted in very similar ?15N and ?13C values but mixing of lipid and non-lipid extracted data produced variable estimates. Values of ?15N and ?13C in lipid extracted liver and prey were 1.50‰ ± 0.54 and 0.22‰ ± 1.18, respectively. Non-lipid extracted diet discrimination factors in liver were highly influenced by lipid content and studies that examine stable isotopes in shark liver, and likely any high lipid tissue, should strive to remove lipid effects through standardising C:N ratios, prior to isotope analysis. Mean vertebral cartilage ?15N and ?13C values were 1.45‰ ± 0.61 and 3.75‰ ± 0.44, respectively. Organ ?15N and ?13C values were more variable among individual sharks but heart tissue was consistently enriched by ~ 1–2.5‰. Minimal variability in muscle and liver δ15N and δ13C sampled at different intervals along the length of individual sharks and between liver lobes suggests that stable isotope values are consistent within tissues of individual animals. To our knowledge, these are the first reported diet–tissue discrimination factors for large sharks under semi-controlled conditions, and are lower than those reported for teleost fish.  相似文献

Functional aspects of biodiversity were investigated in a lowland tropical rainforest in French Guyana (5°2′N, annual precipitation 2200 mm). We assessed leaf δ15N as a presumptive indicator of symbiotic N2 fixation, and leaf and wood cellulose δ13C as an indicator of leaf intrinsic water-use efficiency (CO2 assimilation rate/leaf conductance for water vapour) in dominant trees of 21 species selected for their representativeness in the forest cover, their ecological strategy (pioneers or late successional stage species, shade tolerance) or their potential ability for N2 fixation. Similar measurements were made in trees of native species growing in a nearby plantation after severe perturbation (clear cutting, mechanical soil disturbance). Bulk soil δ15N was spatially quite uniform in the forest (range 3–5‰), whereas average leaf δ15N ranged from −0.3‰ to 3.5‰ in the different species. Three species only, Diplotropis purpurea, Recordoxylon speciosum (Fabaceae), and Sclerolobium melinonii (Caesalpiniaceae), had root bacterial nodules, which was also associated with leaf N concentrations higher than 20 mg g−1. Although nodulated trees displayed significantly lower leaf δ15N values than non-nodulated trees, leaf δ15N did not prove a straightforward indicator of symbiotic fixation, since there was a clear overlap of δ15N values for nodulated and non-nodulated species at the lower end of the δ15N range. Perturbation did not markedly affect the difference δ15Nsoil δ15Nleaf, and thus the isotopic data provide no evidence of an alteration in the different N acquisition patterns. Extremely large interspecific differences in sunlit leaf δ13C were observed in the forest (average values from −31.4 to −26.7‰), corresponding to intrinsic water-use efficiencies (ratio CO2 assimilation rate/leaf conductance for water vapour) varying over a threefold range. Wood cellulose δ13C was positively related to total leaf δ13C, the former values being 2–3‰ higher than the latter ones. Leaf δ13C was not related to leaf δ15N at either intraspecific or interspecific levels. δ13C of sunlit leaves was highest in shade hemitolerant emergent species and was lower in heliophilic, but also in shade-tolerant species. For a given species, leaf δ13C did not differ between the pristine forest and the disturbed plantation conditions. Our results are not in accord with the concept of existence of functional types of species characterized by common suites of traits underlying niche differentiation; rather, they support the hypothesis that each trait leads to a separate grouping of species. Knowledge of carnivore diets is essential to understand how carnivore populations respond demographically to variations in prey abundance. Analysis of stable isotopes is a useful complement to traditional methods of analyzing carnivore diets. We used data on δ^13C and δ^15N in wolverine tissues to investigate patterns of seasonal and annual diet variation in a wolverine Gulo gulo population in the western Brooks Range, Alaska, USA. The stable isotope ratios in wolverine tissues generally reflected that of terrestrial carnivores, corroborating previous diet studies on wolverines. We also found variation in δ^13C and δ^15N both between muscle samples collected over several years and between tissues with different assimilation rates, even after correcting for isotopic fractionation. This suggests both annual and seasonal diet variation. Our results indicate that data on δ^13C and δ^15N holds promise for qualitative assessments of wolverine diet changes over time. Such temporal variation may be important indicators of ecological responses to environmental perturbations, and we suggest that more refined studies of stable isotopes may be an important tool when studying temporal change in diets of wolverines and similar carnivores [ Current Zoology 55 (3): 188- 192, 2009].  相似文献

Tropical scleractinian corals are considered autotrophic as they rely mainly on photosynthesis-derived nutrients transferred from their photosymbionts. Corals are also able to capture and ingest suspended particulate organic matter, so heterotrophy can be an important supplementary trophic pathway to optimize coral fitness. The aim of this in situ study was to elucidate the trophic status of 10 coral species under contrasted environmental conditions in a French Polynesian lagoon. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic compositions of coral host tissues and photosymbionts were determined at 3 different fringing reefs during wet and dry seasons. Our results highlighted spatial variability in stable isotopic compositions of both coral host tissues and photosymbionts. Samples from the site with higher level of suspended particulate matter were 13C-depleted and 15N-enriched relative to corals and photosymbionts from less turbid sites. However, differences in both δ13C and δ15N between coral host tissues and their photosymbionts (Δhost-photosymbionts 13C and Δhost-photosymbionts 15N) were small (0.27 ± 0.76‰ and 1.40 ± 0.90‰, respectively) and similar at all sites, thus indicating no general increases in the heterotrophic pathway. Depleted δ13C and enriched δ15N values of coral host tissues measured at the most turbid site were explained by changes in isotopic composition of the inorganic nutrients taken up by photosymbionts and also by changes in rate of isotopic fractionation with environmental conditions. Our results also highlighted a lack of significant temporal variations in δ13C and δ15N values of coral host and photosymbiont tissues and in Δhost-photosymbionts 13C and Δhost-photosymbionts 15N values. This temporal stability indicated that corals remained principally autotrophic even during the wet season when photosymbiont densities were lower and the concentrations of phytoplankton were higher. Increased coral heterotrophy with higher food availability thus appears to be species-specific.  相似文献

The food-web structure of the Arctic deep Canada Basin was investigated in summer 2002 using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope tracers. Overall food-web length of the range of organisms sampled occupied four trophic levels, based on 3.8 trophic level enrichment (15N range: 5.3–17.7). It was, thus, 0.5–1 trophic levels longer than food webs in both Arctic shelf and temperate deep-sea systems. The food sources, pelagic particulate organic matter (POM) (13C=–25.8, 15N=5.3) and ice POM (13C=–26.9, 15N=4.1), were not significantly different. Organisms of all habitats, ice-associated, pelagic and benthic, covered a large range of 15N values. In general, ice-associated crustaceans (15N range 4.6–12.4, mean 6.9) and pelagic species (15N range 5.9–16.5, mean 11.5) were depleted relative to benthic invertebrates (15N range 4.6–17.7, mean 13.2). The predominantly herbivorous and predatory sympagic and pelagic species constitute a shorter food chain that is based on fresh material produced in the water column. Many benthic invertebrates were deposit feeders, relying on largely refractory material. However, sufficient fresh phytodetritus appeared to arrive at the seafloor to support some benthic suspension and surface deposit feeders on a low trophic level (e.g., crinoids, cumaceans). The enriched signatures of benthic deposit feeders and predators may be a consequence of low primary production in the high Arctic and the subsequent high degree of reworking of organic material.  相似文献

There is debate in the literature as to whether scales of fishes require acidification to remove inorganic carbonates prior to stable isotope analysis. Acid-treated and untreated scales from 208 Atlantic salmon from nine locations on both sides of the Atlantic were analysed for δ13C and δ15N. Linear mixed-effect models determined the effect of acid treatment to be statistically significant. However, the mean difference was small (δ13C 0.1 ± 0.2‰, δ15N −0.1 ± 0.2‰) and not of biological relevance. This study concludes that Atlantic salmon scales do not need to be acidified prior to stable isotope analysis.  相似文献

Stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) isotope ratios from muscle, liver and yolk were analysed from the mother and embryos of an ovoviviparous shark, Hexanchus griseus. Embryonic liver and muscle had similar δ15N and δ13C ratios or were depleted in heavy isotopes, compared to the same maternal somatic and reproductive yolk tissues, but no relationship existed between δ15N or δ13C and embryo length, as expected, because a switch to placental nourishment is lacking in this species. This study expands the understanding of maternal nourishment and embryonic stable isotope differences in ovoviviparous sharks.  相似文献
