Most cooperative breeding bird species live in family groups that are formed through the prolonged association of offspring with their parents. Research into cooperative families has in particular investigated the balance between cooperation and conflict over reproductive decisions. As a consequence of this research focus, social interactions among group members outside the breeding season are rarely studied, despite the fact that they are likely to be crucial for social decisions. We investigated the social dynamics and ranging behaviour of the family group living cooperatively breeding apostlebird ( Struthidea cinerea ) outside the breeding season. Group size changed between, but not within, the seasons, being smaller during the breeding season than in the winter season. This change in group size was a consequence of breeding groups merging after breeding, then splitting again before the next breeding season. While breeding groups used small, non-overlapping home ranges (      = 113 ha) around the nesting site, during winter groups moved up to 1200 ha (      = 598 ha), and interacted frequently with up to four other winter groups. In particular large groups often joined together during winter and spent up to 50% of their time associating with other large winter groups. This apparent fission-fusion system facilitated the exchange of group members, offering the possibility to form new breeding coalitions and new groups. The results of this study suggest that behaviour outside the breeding season can be of considerable importance to the social dynamics of both families and cooperative breeding in such systems.  相似文献

Fighting is known to occur frequently in male mouse groups. In this study with outbred NIH/S mice, the possible impact of individual aggressiveness on fighting in groups and on the social status of animals was studied. Male mice were pre-tested in a resident-intruder (RI) test and rated as initially aggressive or non-aggressive according to their attack behaviour against an intruder. Thereafter they were randomly allocated to new social groups, with four mice per cage. Fighting in groups was increased when several initially aggressive animals were included in the group. Within the groups, animals were rated as dominants and subordinates according to their behaviour toward a strange intruder introduced into their home-cage (Group Intruder, GI) test and the occurrence of wounds. Additionally, subordinates were divided into aggressive and non-aggressive categories according to their behaviour in the second RI test, which was performed 3 weeks after grouping. The behaviour in the RI test prior to group-housing did not predict the individual social status or possibility of being wounded in the new social environment. On the other hand, the social relationships in the new group affected the behaviour in a subsequent RI test. All dominants showed aggressive behaviour during the second RI test. Those subordinates which behaved aggressively during this test received the most numerous and serious wounds, suggesting that in the new groups their interactions with the other group members were mostly aggressive. The reduced weight of epididymal adipose tissue in dominant and aggressive subordinates may indicate that they had fought continuously. Social status or levels of fighting in a group did not affect individual weight gain or the other physiological parameters measured. The wounded animals had enlarged spleens and reduced weights of epididymal adipose tissue, which were probably the results of increased activity of the immune system and reduced welfare, respectively. In conclusion, individual aggressiveness seems to be greatly affected by the demands of the social environment. Fighting in mouse groups leading to wounded animals may have effects on physiological research parameters.  相似文献

Four groups of 15-19 adult ISA Brown hens were studied in pens to assess the relationship between social status and use of perches and nestboxes. This was to test the hypothesis that subordinate hens use these resources more by day, for avoiding dominants, but that dominants use perches more at night, for roosting. The experiment consisted of a 5-week pre-treatment period, when no perches were present, and a 4-week treatment period, when each group was tested with different perch treatments (No, Low, Medium, High). All groups were observed systematically in each week, when all interactions of three types (aggressive peck, non-aggressive peck, approach/avoidance) in a group were recorded by noting the instigator and recipient (from numbered wing tags) onto a matrix. Proportions of time that each bird spent using perches and nestboxes, by day and at night, were also recorded. The results indicate that social status of individual laying hens is relatively stable across time and can be based reliably on counts of either aggressive pecks or approach/avoidances, but not non-aggressive pecks. Aggressive pecks were the most frequent type of interaction observed, and were reduced by the presence of perches. Use of nestboxes, but not perches, was greater at night than by day. There were weak tendencies for perches, and to a lesser extent nestboxes, to be used more by lower ranking birds by day, but not at night. There was some evidence of increased use of these resources by higher ranking birds at night. It is concluded that provision of perches reduces bird density on the floor (where nearly all interactions occurred), allows subordinates a means of avoiding dominants by day, reduces frequency of agonistic interactions, and should thus benefit laying hen welfare.  相似文献

The diversity of oral microbiota is affected by diets habits, gender, age, ethnic group, and environment. The acquisition of oral microbiota and the role of family on oral microbiota development is poorly understood. This study aims to characterize and compare the oral bacterial microbiota among families using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. This work was conducted in Jeddah city from 2020 to 2021, in which four families composed of 20 members of different ethnicity and lifestyle were recruited. After the collection of saliva samples, the DNA was extracted and processed for 16S rRNA gene metagenomics sequencing. Among 378 OUTs generated, 39 (10.3%) were unique in group A, 13 (3.4%) unique in group B, and 11 (2.9%) were unique in groups C and D. We observed a significant variation at the level of top abundance phylum (14), families (23), genera (24), and species (22) of bacteria among family members. Within family groups, different bacterial species were reported to be more dominant among certain family members than the other; Prevotella melaninogenica, Prevotella histicola and Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Veillonella atypica, Porphyromonas pasteri and Haemophilus pittmaniae were more dominant in parents of some families than the other family member. In summary, this study highlights the precise and perceptible association of oral microbial between family members. Our findings documented the clustering of certain bacterial species in family groups, supporting the role of community in the development of oral microbiota.  相似文献

In two members of a family (daughter and father) active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections persisted over periods of 4 and 3 years respectively (possibly 10 years in the father). Both had persistent splenomegaly and occasional bouts of unexplained fever but lived otherwise normal lives. The other members of the family (mother and son) were healthy. The titres of antibody to the EBV viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA) were extremely high in the daughter''s blood, whereas the titres of antibody to the Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen were low in the daughter''s blood and undetectable in the father''s. Target cells of the EBV infection that were obtained from the daughter''s blood were established in culture with great difficulty and showed increased expression of VCA and EA. Other immunologic investigations in the two patients revealed that the ratio of helper to suppressor T lymphocytes was inverted, natural killer-cell activity was abnormally low, lymphocyte responses to certain mitogens were depressed and there was a serum factor blocking mitogen-induced transformation. The possibility that the patients'' unusual susceptibility to EBV infection represented an inherited syndrome (perhaps X-linked) is discussed.  相似文献

Two minisatellite loci from a Eurasian songbird, the willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) were isolated, sequenced and used as probes to detect more than 20 related hypervariable loci. In addition, a sequence flanking one of the minisatellite loci was isolated, and used to study a VNTR locus. The bird minisatellites have a repeat unit of either 12 (AGGGAAGGGCTC) or 17 bp (GGGGACAGGGGACACCC), repeated in tandem 40-100 times per locus, and shows partial similarity to the sequence motifs of human minisatellites. These sequences are among the most variable minisatellites known, with the incidence per gamete of new length alleles estimated from family studies of warblers to about 5.6% per locus. The bird minisatellite alleles show mendelian inheritance and segregation analysis indicates that they are derived from families of sequences with members on several autosomal linkage groups. Some of the warbler core sequences cross-hybridize to hypervariable loci in other species of birds, mammals and fishes.  相似文献

We have analyzed more than 500 alphoid monomers either sequenced in our laboratory or available in the literature. Most of them belonged to the well studied suprachromosomal families 1, 2 and 3 characterized by dimeric (1 and 2) and pentameric (3) ancestral periodicities. The sequences that did not belong to the previously known families were subjected to further analysis. About a half of them formed a relatively homogenous family. Its members were on average 80.5% identical and 89.5% homologous to the M1 consensus sequence derived from this group (39 monomers). In the genome they do not form any ancestral periodicities other than a monomeric one, and are found at least in chromosomes 13, 14, 15, 21, 22 and Y. The newly defined family was termed suprachromosomal family 4. Comparison of all 10 alphoid monomeric groups identified so far showed that the M1 sequence is closely related to the J1-D2-W4-W5 homology grouping. Notably the African Green Monkey alpha satellite, also characterized by monomeric construction, appears to be a member of the same group.  相似文献

The increasing awareness of the importance of social housing of laboratory primates results in the establishment of group housing in many facilities. Our aim was to develop a set of manageable tools to allow continuous monitoring of social relations within groups and to establish an objective, scientific ground on which changes in group composition could be based. We studied 38 adult rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) grouped as five one-male/multi-female groups using focal sampling. We recorded the occurrence and direction of aggressive and non-aggressive social interactions as well as time spent inactive in proportion to social contacts, feeding and other activities. The present analysis clearly identified low-ranking animals with none or few affiliative contacts and who also spent much time inactive and separated from other low-ranking animals. This suggests that the present approach results in useful information concerning compatibility between group members and enables identification of animals experiencing high social stress.  相似文献

Although the central and stable position of female rhesus monkeys in semi-free-ranging bands has been observed and described, the position of the developing male in the social group is not as well delineated. The present study is an attempt to describe interactions of 18 males with members of their families. Quantitative observations were made on one band (E) of rhesus monkeys on Cayo Santiago. Incidences of behavior recorded were joining, grooming, and threatening. The resulting data were analyzed by comparing the behavior of the males studied toward members of their genealogy as well as unrelated members of the social group. Behavior of family and non-relatives toward the males was also revealed. Statistical analysis revealed that the male subjects engaged in more positive social interactions within the matrifocal family than with other members of the genealogy, and in turn, more such behavior was observed within the genealogy than with unrelated monkeys. Threatening behavior within the genealogies was infrequent. Age effects were noted in that family members directed more interactions toward younger males and as males matured, they groomed more but joined family members less frequently. These data suggest mechanisms of socialization within the genealogy that may be different from those employed within the unrelated social group.  相似文献

In an attempt to investigate the clinical significance of anti-pituitary antibodies in patients with hypopituitarism, anti-pituitary antibody in plasma was examined in 10 such patients (7 cases of isolated ACTH deficiency, 1 of partial hypopituitarism, and 2 of Sheehan's syndrome), on two or three occasions with an interval of more than 6 months (longitudinal study). In a total of 16 relatives of these 4 patients (2 cases of Sheehan's syndrome, one in each of partial hypopituitarism and isolated ACTH deficiency) and one patient not involved in the longitudinal study, anti-pituitary antibodies were also examined (family study). Anti-pituitary antibodies reacting with rat pituitary cytoplasmic antigens (pituitary cell antibodies: PCA) and pituitary cell surface antibodies (PCSA) reacting with GH3 cells and/or AtT-20 cells were measured with indirect immunofluorescence. The longitudinal study revealed the disappearance of antibodies in 3 patients, 2 PCA positive and one both PCA and PCSA positive. In 3 patients, altered antibody titers or a newly appearing antibody were found during the follow-up period. In 4 patients, the pituitary antibodies were negative during the follow-up periods. Of 16 family members studied, positive PCA was found in 3 members (2 in the families of patients with PCA positive Sheehan's syndrome, and 1 in the family of the patients with PCA positive partial hypopituitarism). Positive PCSA was found in 4 members (one in each of families of patients with partial hypopituitarism and isolated ACTH deficiency and of two cases of Sheehan's syndrome), and weakly positive PCSA was found in one family member of a patients with PCA positive Sheehan's syndrome.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To investigate HBV transmission in families on three islands in Okinawa, Japan, prevalence of HBV markers in two groups of inhabitants was determined. One group consisted of members of families in which there was at least one HBsAg carrier (carrier families); the other group consisted of members of families in which there were no HBsAg carriers (non-carrier families). A total of 3,261 serum samples were collected from subjects on Iriomote Island, Hateruma Island, and Yonaguni Island. These samples were tested for HBsAg by reversed passive hemagglutination (RPHA) and for antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) by radioimmunoassay. Overall prevalences of HBsAg and anti-HBc were 8.2 and 65.8 per cent respectively. The prevalence of anti-HBC among members of carrier families (80.8%) was significantly higher than that among members of non-carrier families (61.6%) (P less than 0.001). The prevalence of anti-HBc among members of carrier families was higher in all age groups, and was particularly so in children. Within carrier families, the prevalence of anti-HBc was significantly higher in families in which there was at least one HBsAg carrier with HBeAg (94.5%) than in families with no HBeAg-positive carriers (76.1%). This difference was especially marked in young children. These data suggest that in families with HBsAg carrier(s), the risk of transmitting HBV to members, particularly to young children, is higher than in families without carriers, and that the risk is further increased in families with HBeAg-positive carrier(s).  相似文献

We have investigated the distribution of several recently inserted Alu family members within representatives of diverse human groups. Human population studies using 65 unrelated human DNA samples, as well as a familial study to test inheritance, showed that individual Alu family members could be divided into three groups. The first group consisted of relatively older Alu family members which were monomorphic (homozygous) throughout the population tested (HS C3N1 and C4N6). The second group (HS C4N2, C4N5 and C4N8), apparently inserted into other repetitive regions of the genome, resulting in inconclusive results in the PCR test used. However, it is clear that these particular Alu insertions were present in a majority if not all of the loci tested. The third group was comprised of three dimorphic Alu family members (HS C2N4, C4N4 and TPA 25). Only a single Alu family member (TPA 25) displayed a high degree of dimorphism within the human population. This latter example also showed different allele frequencies in different human groups. The isolation and characterization of additional highly dimorphic Alu family members should provide a useful tool for human population genetics.  相似文献

The hypothesis, partly based on findings in social interactions, that aggressive mice generally adopt an active behavioural strategy (cf. fight-flight) in threatening situations, while non-aggressive ones generally assume a passive strategy (cf. conservation-withdrawal) was tested using a two-way active shock avoidance paradigm. Overall, aggressive mice were found to be better active shock avoiders than non-aggressive animals; a finding that is consistent with our hypothesis. However, within the non-aggressive mice a clear dichotomy in high and low avoidance individuals was found. The high intertrial activity in the superior avoidance groups and the low activity in the poor avoidance group was interpreted as another indication of an active versus passive strategy respectively. Accordingly, it was concluded that not all non-aggressive mice assume a passive strategy, but that some mice adopt an active strategy, like all aggressive males.  相似文献

1995 年7~11月,1996 年3~8月在陕西佛坪国家级自然保护区用野外直接观察和无线电跟踪器追踪的方法, 对秦岭羚牛( Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi) 的集群类型进行了观察。工作期间共记录到羚牛146 群次, 按群体大小和结构可将羚牛群分为家群、混合群、社群、聚集群和独牛5 种类型。在野外记录到的家群共32群次, 混合群15次, 社群47次, 聚集群2次, 独牛50 次。家群的成员是具有亲缘关系的个体, 在羚牛各类型的集群中占据核心的地位,是构成其它类型的羚牛群的基本单位。混合群的成员或是以家群为核心混杂以多只亚成体组成、或全部由亚成体和性成熟不久的年轻成体组成, 是介于家群和社群之间的一种集群方式; 其形成与羚牛幼仔在成长过程中社会习性的形成和完善有关。社群是由多个家群构成的相对比较稳定的一种群体, 在各季节中出现的比例均很稳定, 是羚牛群栖的主要形式。聚集群仅见于夏季, 是临时聚集的一种不稳定的集群类型, 其形成与采食和繁殖活动有关。独牛是羚牛集群的一种特殊形式, 繁殖季节出现的频率高于非繁殖季节。  相似文献

Behavior of Kloss' gibbons was studied from July 1 to October 7, 1972 in Siberut Island, off the coast of western Sumatra, Indonesia. Reproductive groups are monogamous families with a mean family size of 3.4 individuals (n = 11 families). Such families occupy territories averaging 6.7 ha. Adults defend their territories only against members of the same sex. This intrasexual defense of territory maintains the monogamous mating system. Other social units were unmated resident females, unmated resident males, floating males, and a courting pair. Males establish territories before mating, perhaps with help from their parents. Males guard their families against predators. Females lead progression through the territory. Subadults remain peripheral to their families but other family members tend to remain within 10 m of one another.  相似文献

The merozoite surface protein-2 (MSP-2) is a major vaccine candidate for the asexual blood stage of Plasmodium falciparum. MSP-2 is essentially dimorphic, and allelic families are named after the representative isolates FC27 and IC1. The polymorphic central region contains immunodominant repeats, which vary in number, length, and sequence within and between allelic families. We have examined the antibody recognition of repeat regions from both MSP-2 allelic families expressed as recombinant fusion peptides. The results are summarized as follows. (1) Immunization of mice with the fusion peptides elicited IgG antibodies that cross-reacted with the native MSP-2 molecule in an allelic family-specific manner. (2) These mouse antibodies recognized the recombinant proteins in both a variant-specific and a family-specific manner, as shown in inhibition immunoassays. Antibodies raised against the peptide FC27 seemed to be essentially variant-specific, since the soluble form of the S20 antigen (a member of FC27 family) had relatively little inhibitory effect on them. (3) The overall pattern of human IgG antibody responses to MSP-2 in Karitiana Indians, a population continuously exposed to hypoendemic malaria in the Brazilian Amazon Region, differs from that described in hyperendemic areas in Africa and Papua New Guinea in two important features: there was no clear age-dependent increase in the prevalence and mean concentration of specific IgG antibodies, and there was no skewing towards the IgG3 subclass in antibody responses. (4) The relatively poor correlation between concentrations of IgG antibodies that are specific for members of the same allelic family suggests that recognition of MSP-2 peptides by naturally acquired antibodies was largely variant-specific in this population. The potential role of naturally acquired variant-specific antibodies in immune evasion, by selecting mutant parasites carrying insertions or deletions of repeat sequences, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The interaction between maternally-derived antibodies (MDA) and canine parvovirus (CPV) infection was evaluated in five groups of pups with a wide range of haemagglutination inhibiting (HI) titres of MDA (from < 10 to 320). The pups were inoculated with a field CPV strain and monitored daily to evaluate their clinical condition and viral shedding in the faeces. Serum samples were collected weekly to evaluate antibody response. Clinical signs were observed in dogs with HI titres up to 80. Active CPV replication was demonstrated in dogs with HI titres up to 160, although slightly delayed, at lower titres and for a shorter period compared to seronegative dogs. The successful infection of dogs with HI titres of 80 and 160 was also confirmed by seroconversion, evaluated at day 14 postinfection. These findings are in contrast with the MDA titre (HI > or = 80) usually considered fully protective for CPV infection, and suggest the need for revision of current vaccination programmes for pups.  相似文献

The richness and diversity of avian species inhabiting Turaif province of Saudi Arabia were surveyed for a period of one-year (2014–2015) using walked belt transects in different habitats of the studied area. Bird species were observed and recorded by sightings or vocal calls. A total of thirty-three bird species belonging to fifteen families were observed across all the surveys in the Turaif area. During a breeding season, species abundance was higher as compared to non-breeding season. Out of 33, eighteen species were passage migrants and fifteen species were noted as breeding residents. Family Muscicapidae which showed the highest proportion (24.24%) was represented by 8 bird species followed by family Alaudidae and family Falconidae represented by 4 species each. According to this survey relatively a fair quantity of bird species still exists in the Turaif region. This area is of significant interest in terms of conservation of birds due to higher densities of endemic, breeding or resident avian species.  相似文献

Many migratory animals travel in large social groups. Large, avian migrants that fly in V-formations were proposed do so for energy saving by the use of up-wash by following individuals and regularly change leadership. As groups have been rather homogeneous in previous work, we aimed to explore leadership and its flight mechanics consequences in an extremely heterogeneous case of social migration, namely in spring migration of goose families. In families the experience of group members differs strongly and inclusive fitness may be important. We successfully collected overlapping spring migration tracking data of a complete family of greater white-fronted geese Anser a. albifrons and extracted leadership, flapping frequency and wind conditions in flight. Our data revealed V-formations where one parent was flying in front at all times. Although the father led the family group most of the time, he did not flap at higher frequency while doing so. In contrast, the mother flapped faster when leading, possibly because she experienced less supportive wind conditions than when the father led. We argue that in heterogeneous, social groups leadership might be fixed and not costly if supportive environmental conditions like wind can be used.  相似文献

Aim

Functional constipation (FC) is one of the common diseases among children. The aim of this study was to investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in preschool children diagnosed with FC and the impact of the condition on affected families.

Methods

In this cross-sectional, case-control study, 152 children aged 3–6 years with FC, 176 healthy children aged 3–6 years without FC, and their primary caregivers were selected. Chinese versions of the PedsQLTM 4.0 Generic Core Scale and the Family Impact Module (FIM) were used to assess childhood HRQOL and the impact of FC on family members, respectively. HRQOL scores were compared between children with FC and healthy children. In addition, a multiple step-wise regression with demographic variables of children and their caregivers, family economic status, duration and symptoms of FC, as independent variables, was used to determine factors that influenced HRQOL in children and had impacted caregivers.

Results

Scores of physical, emotional, social and school functions, and summary scales were significantly lower in children with FC than in healthy children (p < 0.05). Physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and communication scores for caregivers, as well as daily activities and relationships for families of children with FC, were significantly lower than those of caregivers and families with healthy children (p < 0.05). Children’s ages, duration of FC, symptoms of FC, the child-caregiver relationship, family economic status, and caregiver education level emerged as the main factors influencing HRQOL in children, caregivers, and family members.

Conclusions

FC had a significant impact on HRQOL of affected children and their caregivers, as well as their family functions. Social characteristics of children and caregivers, duration and symptoms of FC and family economic status significantly affected HRQOL of children and caregivers, as well as family functions of children with FC.  相似文献
