BackgroundChildhood obesity and asthma are increasing worldwide. A possible link between the two conditions has been postulated.MethodsCross-sectional studies of stratified random samples of 8–12-year-old children (n = 10 652) (16 centres in affluent and 8 centres in non-affluent countries) used the standardized methodology of ISAAC Phase Two. Respiratory and allergic symptoms were ascertained by parental questionnaires. Tests for allergic disease were performed. Height and weight were measured, and overweight and obesity were defined according to international definitions. Prevalence rates and prevalence odds ratios were calculated.ResultsOverweight (odds ratio = 1.14, 95%-confidence interval: 0.98; 1.33) and obesity (odds ratio = 1.67, 95%-confidence interval: 1.25; 2.21) were related to wheeze. The relationship was stronger in affluent than in non-affluent centres. Similar results were found for cough and phlegm, rhinitis and eczema but the associations were mostly driven by children with wheeze. There was a clear association of overweight and obesity with airways obstruction (change in FEV1/FVC, −0.90, 95%-confidence interval: −1.33%; −0.47%, for overweight and −2.46%, 95%-confidence interval: −3.84%; −1.07%, for obesity) whereas the results for the other objective markers, including atopy, were null.ConclusionsOur data from a large international child population confirm that there is a strong relation of body mass index with wheeze especially in affluent countries. Moreover, body mass index is associated with an objective marker of airways obstruction (FEV1/FVC) but no other objective markers of respiratory and allergic disorders.  相似文献

Atopic eczema (AE) is a chronic skin disease. Recent reports indicate that the worldwide prevalence of AE is increasing and that various environmental factors are implicated in its aetiology. Climatic conditions have been related with AE prevalence, and Spain has varying climatic conditions. The aim of this study is to document the possible climatic influence on the prevalence of AE in schoolchildren aged 6–7 years in three different climatic regions in Spain. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based survey of 28,394 schoolchildren aged 6–7 years from 10 Spanish centres in three different climatic regions. The mean participation rate was 76.5%. AE prevalence was assessed using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire and the Spanish Academy of Dermatology criteria used in Spain to diagnose AE. The data, including annual temperature, precipitation, relative humidity and the annual number of sunny hours per climatic region, were obtained from the Spanish National Institute of Meteorology. Different AE prevalences were found in all three climatic regions studied: Atlantic, 32.9; Mediterranean 28.3; and Continental 31.2 per 100 children studied (p < 0.005). AE was positively associated with precipitation and humidity, and was negatively associated with temperature and the number of sunny hours. The results show that AE is significantly dependent on meteorological conditions.  相似文献

About 45% of the total surface area of the Castile and Leon region today can potentially be occupied by semi-deciduous forests, chiefly dominated by Quercus faginea Willd. and Quercus pyrenaica Lam. On the basis of extrapolated trends in annual mean temperature and precipitation in Castile and Leon observed over the 37-year period from 1961 to 1997 [del Río et al. 2005], predicted changes in the areas covered by Q. faginea and Q. pyrenaica forests in 2025, 2050 and 2075 were made. A decrease in Q. faginea forests may occur if observed trends in temperature and precipitation continue. With respect to Q. pyrenaica forests, they may increase in present Mediterranean areas and decreases in Temperate Submediterranean areas. In some cases, both types of forests could be replaced by deciduous forests. The predicted results in the natural distribution of vegetation types by the bioclimatic models can be used to establish policies for improved future nature conservation and land management.  相似文献

Abstract

Areas that currently may be potentially occupied by deciduous forests represent approximately 5.5% of the Castile and Leon area. These forests include plant communities mainly dominated by Fagus sylvatica L., Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Libl. and Betula pubescens Ehrh. subsp. celtiberica (Roth. & Vasc.) Rivas-Martínez. Taking into account the observed trends in annual mean temperature and precipitation in this region over a 37 years period (1961?–?1997), three climatic variation scenarios (for 2025, 2050 and 2075) have been proposed to determine the potential consequences of climatic change on the distribution patterns of the most representative deciduous forests. According to these scenarios, a more oceanic climate can be expected, leading to an increase in territories having a temperate climate. In this situation, deciduous forests could increase their distribution limits, thus replacing some semi-deciduous and evergreen ones. The paper also emphasizes the relevance of using bioclimatic models to anticipate possible changes in the natural vegetation of a territory. Thus, better knowledge of the seasonal distribution of temperature and rainfall under a climate change is necessary for forecasting effects on the forest distribution of a given region.  相似文献

Annual variations in the abundance ofAlternaria spores were related to the length of the spore period for data from Murcia (southeastern Spain). To understand the relationship between the number of spores and climatic factors,Alternaria spore counts for March 1993 to February 1994 were examined by means of correlation and regression analyses with fourteen different weather parameters. The results indicated that there was a tendency forAlternaria spore concentrations to increase with increases in temperature, wind speed and hours of sunshine. Negative correlations were observed with air pressure, wind direction and humidity. Theoretical curves forAlternaria spore counts are given in relation to temperatures during the period studied.  相似文献

Few studies have focused on the long-term influence of the climate on the prevalence of asthma. The aim of this study is to establish the influence of geo-climatic conditions on the prevalence of asthma symptoms both in adolescents and schoolchildren, and to discover if this influence is associated with their time trends. Eight centres in Spain performed both ISAAC phases I (1994) and III (2002) in children 13–14 years old. Six of them also surveyed children 6–7 years old. For each age group and phase, about 3,000 children were surveyed per centre. This study examines the prevalence of current wheeze and severe current wheeze in two different geo-climatic zones, coast and plateau, considering their relative humidity and temperature range. In both age groups, the mean asthma prevalence on the coast, for phase I and III, was significantly higher than on the plateau. Living on the plateau was an independent protective factor for current wheeze and severe current wheeze for the two age groups. Within the coastal centres, the increase of the annual relative humidity was a statistical significant risk factor for current wheeze, the same trend existing for current severe wheeze. These effects were independent of the sex and of the phase of the study. The prevalence of asthma and severe asthma symptoms is more frequent on the coast of Spain as compared to the inner plateau. This finding was repeated both in 1994 and in 2002.  相似文献

Background

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) and Nitric Oxide (NO) are crucial mediators for establishing pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). We tested the hypothesis that their imbalance might also occur in COPD patients with PAH.

Methods

The aims of the study were to measure exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and circulating levels of ET-1, as well as exhaled NO (FENO) levels by, respectively, a specific enzyme immunoassay kit, and by chemiluminescence analysis in 3 groups of subjects: COPD with PAH (12), COPD only (36), and healthy individuals (15). In order to evaluate pulmonary-artery systolic pressure (PaPs), all COPD patients underwent Echo-Doppler assessment.

Results

Significantly increased exhaled and circulating levels of ET-1 were found in COPD with PAH compared to both COPD (p < 0.0001) only, and healthy controls (p < 0.0001). In COPD with PAH, linear regression analysis showed good correlation between ET-1 in EBC and PaPs (r = 0.621; p = 0.031), and between arterial levels of ET-1 and PaPs (r = 0.648; p = 0.022), while arterial levels of ET-1 inversely correlated with FEV1%, (r = -0.59, p = 0.043), and PaPs negatively correlated to PaO2 (r = -0.618; p = 0.032). Significantly reduced levels of FENO were found in COPD associated with PAH, compared to COPD only (22.92 ± 11.38 vs.35.07 ± 17.53 ppb; p = 0.03). Thus, we observed an imbalanced output in the breath between ET-1 and NO, as expression of pulmonary endothelium and epithelium impairment, in COPD with PAH compared to COPD only. Whether this imbalance is an early cause or result of PAH due to COPD is still unknown and deserves further investigations.  相似文献

Both swimming and attachment behaviour of immature female Brachionus calyciflorus (Pallas) from a young orthoclone were analyzed under four experimental conditions: with and without algae (Chlorella), and with fed and starved individuals. Eighteen hours before the recording, two random groups were formed. To the first group, Chlorella was added. The second was placed in pure water. Both were filmed in red light to avoid a phototactic effect. Video-recorded swimming behaviour of B. calyciflorus was analyzed by automatic tracking. Each B. calyciflorus was filmed alternately in the presence or absence of Chlorella for five periods of 15 min. Under indentical light and temperature conditions the number of animals attached to the culture dish was measured with both starved and fed females. We observed a significant difference in swimming paths depending on the presence or absence of food, and the physiological state of the individuals. In the presence of Chlorella the linear speed was lower and the angular speed was greater. This increase in angular speed was more pronounced when females were subjected to a period of starvation before the experimentation. The attachment behaviour increased in the algal environment. This modification of swimming behaviour enables females to increase the time spent in a favorable food environment.  相似文献

Anisakiosis is a nematodosis with high prevalence in Spain. In this work we (a) investigated whether a recently introduced ELISA of Anisakis simplex-specific IgE in serum suffers from cross-reactivity with other common allergens; (b) used this assay to obtain an estimate of the prevalence of A. simplex-specific IgE in the population of Madrid; and (c) related positivity to fish consumption habits. No evidence of cross-reactivity between the ELISA and other allergens was found. The prevalence of positivity was 12.4% (11.7% among healthy subjects and 16% among patients with non-digestive non-allergic pathologies). All interviewed subjects reported consumption of uncooked fish (known to be the most likely source of infection); in addition, positivity was more prevalent among subjects who habitually consumed fresh and possibly undercooked fish than among those who generally consumed frozen fish or boiled or baked fish. These results are discussed in relation to the much lower prevalence observed in Galicia (N.W. Spain).  相似文献

The seasonal and daily variations in the concentrations of certain fungal spores in the atmosphere of the city of Granada (South of Spain) have been studied. Sampling was carried out in 1994 using a Hirst-type volumetric spore trap. The spores analysed correspond to the genera Alternaria, Cladosporium (Cladosporium cladosporioides and Cladosporium herbarum), Fusarium, Stemphylium and Ustilago. The seasonal-variation data obtained indicate that most of these spores are abundant throughout the year, with the exception of Fusarium, which was only present in trace amounts. The maximum concentrations of Alternaria, Cladosporium and Stemphylium are obtained during two sharp peaks in spring and autumn, with the minimum values being recorded during the summer and winter months; Fusarium and Ustilago spores are most abundant in autumn and winter. Although intradiurnal-variation models vary from one taxon to the next, the highest levels are generally recorded after 12:00 hours, with maximum levels being obtained in the afternoon.  相似文献

The Guadix-Baza Basin in Spain covers an area of approximately 3000 km2 and yields a sedimentary sequence ranging from Lower Miocene to Pleistocene. Twenty five meters of Lower Pleistocene lacustrine sediments have been located in the NE part of the Basin at about 1000 meters in altitude. This sequence which overlies dolomitic mud flat deposits consists of limestones, calcareous and dolomitic mudstones, dolostones, silty clays, sands and gravels. Salinity fluctuations and short dry episodes, related to lake level oscillations, have been recorded by textural, mineralogical and faunal changes throughout the sequence. Ostracods, which are the most commonly encountered fossils, permit to detect recurrent changes in water salinity and regime, and solute composition. The faunal changes indicate an alternation of slightly saline and bicarbonate-rich water (when ostracods and gastropods occur) with a saline NaCl-dominant water (in which ostracods, Cerastoderma bivalves and non-marine foraminifers are found).The frequent and recurrent hydrochemical changes in the Baza Basin in the Early Pleistocene point to a climate of high contrast like in the Mediterranean region today but with a greater availability of water within the system compared to the present situation in the area.  相似文献

The spores ofAlternaria andCladosporium are present throughout the year in the atmosphere of León (NW Spain), although they show an important seasonal variation. To understand the relationship between the number of spores and climatic factors,Alternaria andCladosporium spores counts for January 1994 to December 1995 were examined by means of correlation analyses. The results of weekly samples of both years showed that the spores concentration of two taxa are significantly and positively correlated with maximum and minimum temperature and sunshine hours and negatively with relative humidity. The statistical analysis of daily samples generally showed the same results. In the hourly distribution of spore concentrations we can see a similar behaviour ofAlternaria andCladosporium, with most spores collected in the 12–14 h period.  相似文献

There are few previous studies on the elastic properties of ureter and most have been limited to essentially one-dimensional deformation measurements. The object of this study was, therefore, to identify regional variations in the multiaxial behaviour of rabbit ureter, subjected to in vitro inflation/extension testing under a physiological range of intraluminal pressures and longitudinal forces. A microstructure-motivated material model (via two- and four-fibre families in turn for elastin and collagen) was implemented and its capacity to mathematically characterise the experimental data contrasted favourably with that of the well-established phenomenological models, but it was compromised by parameter covariance. Extensive optimisation studies confirmed that the reduced model without contribution to the elastin and circumferential-fibre (collagen) families characterised the data equally well without over-parameterisation. In view of the fitted parameters, the ureteral tissue was stiffer longitudinally, justified by the preferential alignment of collagen along that axis and the lower ureter was stiffer than the upper ureter, justified by the histological observation of a thickest lamina propria, i.e. of highest collagen content, there. The lower ureter was less anisotropic than the upper ureter, possessing a comparatively larger amount of diagonally arranged collagen fibres in tunica mucosa, while having the usual amounts of longitudinally arranged fibres in tunica adventitia and of circumferentially arranged fibres in tunica muscularis. The present data may be used as inputs to mathematical models of the ureter, assessing regional and intramural stress distributions, through which it is hoped that an improved appreciation of ureteral function may be attained in both health and disease.  相似文献

One-hour mated Sprague-Dawley rats underwent a normal pregnancy, which was terminated at hours 302, 326, 350, and 374. After appropriate processing and scanning electron microscopy of the embryos, absolute measurements of the craniofacial area, especially of the snout, maxillary process, eye, lower face, and brain were taken in the 302- and 326-hr embryos. Additionally, growth ratios were established in all stages. The greatest growth and developmental changes occurred between 302 and 326 hr, when 1) the snout developed from the nasal anlagen and the maxillary process, 2) the eye lens replaced the eyepit, and 3) the hindlimb developed. Between 326 and 350 hr, the optic pit developed. The results of the present study can markedly enhance precision in interpretation of results of teratological studies in the rat. The detailed quantitative data established allow reporting of subtle departures from the normal hitherto impossible.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative differences in carrageenan composition of gametophytes and tetrasporophytes of Chondrus crispus were observed in this study. Carrageenans in gametophytes belong to the kappa family (κ-, ι-, ν- and μ-carrageenan). The dominant fractions were κ- and ι-carrageenan (more than 50% of the total carrageenans). In tetrasporophytes, the presence of λ-carrageenan was confirmed. Carrageenan content in gametophytes (37.4?±?1.68% DW) was higher than in tetrasporophytes (29.13?±?0.76% DW). Spatial and temporal variation in carrageenan content in both life cycle phases appears to be related mainly to seawater and air temperatures, insolation, water movement and desiccation. The highest values of carrageenan content were recorded in those localities where higher values of precipitation, wind speed or water movement occurred. A bimodal temporal pattern on carrageenan content was observed. Fronds showed a high carrageenan content in spring and autumn. During these seasons, the content was over 40% in gametophytes and 30% in the tetrasporophytes. In summer and winter, these values down in both life cycle phases below 30%. In general the highest carrageenan contents were related to highest seawater temperatures. On the contrary, high air temperature and high insolation appeared to be unfavourable for carrageenan production. GLM models were obtained to predict carrageenan production from natural C. crispus populations, along Galician coast.  相似文献

The stability over time of the organic C stocked in soils under undisturbed ecosystems is poorly studied, despite being suitable for detecting changes related to climate fluctuations and global warming. Volcanic soils often show high organic C contents due to the stabilization of organic matter by short‐range ordered minerals or Al‐humus complexes. We investigated the dynamics of different organic C fractions in volcanic soils of protected natural ecosystems of the Canary Islands (Spain) to evaluate the stability of their C pools. The study was carried out in 10 plots, including both undisturbed and formerly disturbed ecosystems, over two annual periods. C inputs to (litterfall) and outputs from (respiration) the soil, root C stocks (0–30 cm), soil organic C (SOC) fractions belonging to C pools with different degrees of biogeochemical stability –total oxidisable C (TOC), microbial biomass C (MBC), water soluble C (WSC), hot‐water extractable C (HWC), humic C (HSC), – and total soil N (TN) (at 0–15 and 15–30 cm) were measured seasonally.A statistically significant interannual increase in CO2 emissions and a decrease in the SOC, mainly at the expense of the most labile organic forms, were observed, while the root C stocks and litterfall inputs remained relatively constant over the study period. The observed changes may reflect an initial increase in SOC resulting from low soil respiration rates due to drought during the first year of study. The soils of nearly mature ecosystems were more apparently affected by C losses, while those undergoing the process of active natural regeneration exhibited disguised C loss because of the C sequestration trend that is characteristic of progressive ecological succession.  相似文献
