The widely distributed long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) has been reported off the Chilean coast, from Iquique (20°12′S) south to Navarino Island (55°15′S; 67°30′W), but little is known about its biology or ecology in the region. Here, we report on the prey of this species, identified by stomach content analyses from animals stranded on Holget Islets, Beagle Channel, southern Chile in August 2006. The stomachs of seven individuals (six females and one male) contained cephalopod remains. The prey composition found in these southern Chilean pilot whales was similar to that described in other parts of the world and the Southern Ocean. This is the first report on the feeding habits of this species from Chile.  相似文献

The absence of the larval Anisakis simplex s. l. in samples from central Chile but heavy infections in fish from southern localities suggest the existence of two stocks of Strangomera bentincki, one closely associated with the central coast of Chile (landing port San Antonio and Talcahuano, c. 33° 30′ S–36° 40′ S) and the other associated with southern Chile (landing port Puerto Montt, c. 41° 30′ S). Results confirm the usefulness of metazoan parasites, like A. simplex s. l. as biological markers.  相似文献

The metazoan parasites of 403 specimens of the southern ray's bream Brama australis from three localities in southern Chile (Lebu 36° 70′ S; 73° 40′ W, Calbuco 41° 50′ S; 73° 08′ W and Punta Arenas 53° 10′ S; 70° 50′ W) were recorded. More than 23 400 parasite specimens belonging to 12 taxa were registered. Metazoan parasites were dominated by the copepod Hatschekia conifera, constituting 97% of the total number of parasites; the larval cestode Hepatoxylon trichiuri was the second most important parasite (2·1% of the total number of parasites). The remaining 10 species constituted <1% of the metazoan parasites. Parasitological evidence, based on univariate and multivariate analysis, does not support the existence of discrete stocks in the studied zone.  相似文献

A conspicuous, new species of the bivalve genusGervilleioperna occurs in coarse-grained bioclastic limestones and mixed siliciclastic-carbonate sediments of nothern Chile between 27° and 29° 40′ S. It is assigned to the new subgenusGervilleiognoma [type species:Gervilleioperna (Gervilleiognoma) aurita n. sp.], which appears to be endemic to northern Chile. On the basis of associated ammonites, the stratigraphic distribution of the new species can be restricted to the Early Aaleman (Manflasensis Zone) and thus it is of biostratigraphic value. The reconstructed life habit was mainly semi-endobyssate, resting on the thickened umbonal and anterior parts of the lower valve; the slightly twisted plane of commissure is oriented in an oblique position with respect to the substrate surface. The palaeogeographic distribution of the genus is briefly discussed.  相似文献

A new aulopodid fish,Hime microps, is described after two specimens from the Nazca submarine ridge (25°43′S, 85°29′W at 160–165 m; 25°42′S, 85°24′W at 162–168 m). This species is related toH. japonica andH. curtirostris but differs in having no pyloric caeca and smaller eyes with the horizontal diameter shorter than the snout length. Specimens ofH. japonica from off Japan, the Hawaiian submarine ridge and the Tasman Sea are compared and found to be morphologically identical.  相似文献

Aim The Chilean long‐tailed snake (Philodryas chamissonis) has a wide distribution across different latitudes and ecosystems in Chile ranging from the south of the Atacama Desert (26° S) to the extremely humid Valdivian temperate rain forest (40° S). Throughout this vast distribution, which is isolated by the Andes mountain range on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, there are biogeographical boundaries and large geographical barriers that must have played an important role in the distribution of genetic diversity within this species. This study aimed at elucidating the evolutionary history of P. chamissonis in Chile by analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences. Location Chile (29°41′–38°23′ S). Methods We extracted DNA from 66 tissue samples collected across different latitudes and amplified and sequenced the mitochondrial DNA control region and the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 gene for phylogenetic and population analysis. Results Four distinct haplogroups were identified for P. chamissonis. These are highly consistent with a latitudinal geographic pattern, different ecosystems and the increase in topography towards central Chile. Three of the four haplogroups are concentrated in central Chile (33° S latitude) where the highest herpetofaunal diversity of the country is found. The Maipo River acts as historical geographical barrier for the species influenced by Pleistocene glaciation cycles, leading to a marked phylogeographical boundary. A strong population structure was found for the species (Φst = 0.78, P < 0.0001), with a high haplotype diversity (h = 0.97 ± 0.01) and nucleotide diversity (π = 0.0151 ± 0.0077). Main conclusions At least three evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) were designated for the species, and these should be taken into account for conservation plans. Three of the four haplogroups found within P. chamissonis are already threatened because their distribution along central Chile overlaps with most of the largest cities in the country.  相似文献

Callophyllis variegata (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) is an edible species used in salads and soups in Asian countries. Research into its early stages and growth is required to develop cultivation. This study evaluated the effect of temperature and photoperiod on viability and germination in the laboratory and, subsequently, growth in the sea. Carpospores collected during different seasons from the localities of Chauman (41°47′S) and Puñihuil (41°55′S), in southern Chile, were grown in Provasoli medium at 10 and 15 °C. After 7 days, viability was higher in the photoperiod of 16:08 h (light/darkness) and 10 °C, while germination was higher at 15 °C in the same photoperiod. Viability was over 65 % in both localities in winter and spring, and germination was 74.6 and 87.5 %, respectively. Daily growth rates in the laboratory fluctuated between 2 and 10 %. Tetrasporophytic juveniles settled on cotton nets were grown on long lines at 3.5 m deep in the sea for 8 months. Growth and density of fronds were evaluated monthly. Epiphytic seaweeds such as Ulva sp. and Polysiphonia sp. were observed on the nets. C. variegata fronds grew up to approximately 8 cm, and the final density was between 10 and 40 ind/10 cm. A preliminary evaluation of culture costs is also presented.  相似文献

The leopard seal is widely distributed on the Antarctic pack ice, but a number of individuals are also thought to displace north from the pack ice to the sub-Antarctic Islands or venture even farther north. In Chile, the leopard seal has been reported mainly in the Fueguian Archipelago, with individuals sighted year-round; however, the data to date have been unable to determine whether it is the same individuals who remain year-round. Thus, one of the questions to be resolved is whether there is a northward dispersion of individuals from the Southern Ocean returning to the Antarctic continent, or alternatively if there is a potential sub-Antarctic population that delay or suspend their migration toward the Antarctic region. Opportunistic sightings of a solitary seal at Ballena Sound (53°41′S, 72°37′W), Magellan Region, Chile, were documented in photographs on six occasions from January to May 2012. Based on the review of the photographs, the leopard seal was identified as the same individual. This finding provides the first evidence of a long occupation by a leopard seal in the fjords and channels of Fueguian Region, suggesting the existence of a small population inhabiting the waters of Southern Chile year-round.  相似文献

Aim We ask whether contemporary forests of the Chilean Coastal Range can be considered to be direct and conservative descendants of pre‐Pleistocene palaeofloras that occurred in southern South America from the Palaeogene to early Neogene periods (65–10 Ma), maintaining foliar physiognomies that do not match their present‐day climate. We also identify the most likely ancestors of present‐day coastal forests. Location Coastal Range of south‐central Chile (33–40° S). Methods We compared leaf morphology between five representative modern floras from mid‐latitude forests of the Chilean Coastal Range, and 14 Palaeogene–early Neogene palaeofloras from southern South America. We also compared the composition of biogeographical elements (defined by the modern distribution of plant genera) between fossil and present‐day assemblages. Palaeoclimatic reconstructions were based on a canonical correspondence analysis between leaf morphology of modern assemblages and eight climatic variables, and tested by a Monte Carlo permutation test. We compared the relative positions of fossil and modern floras on the environmental vector space defined by Canoco, and on axes defined by instrumental and estimated temperature and precipitation data. Results According to foliar characters, Palaeogene palaeofloras were strikingly divergent from present‐day coastal forests of central Chile. In contrast, two extant forest floras of the Chilean Coastal Range have a foliar morphology that resembles some late Eocene to early Miocene mixed palaeofloras, at least 23 Myr older. These two modern sites are representative of an area of the Coastal Range (36–37° S) that has been highlighted for its relictual character. None of the 14 fossil floras corresponded exactly to the modern composition of phytogeographic elements, although correspondence analyses showed that mixed and Neogene subtropical fossil floras were compositionally close to the extant woody floras of coastal forests in central Chile. Main Conclusions Contemporary forests of the Chilean Coastal Range exhibit strong physiognomic resemblance to the mixed palaeofloras from 33°57′ to 41°15′ S, which may be the closest ancestor of the deciduous and endemic‐rich Maulino forest, presently restricted to coastal areas between 36° and 38° S. In turn, the Neogene subtropical palaeoflora that occurred in the Proto‐Andean foothills of central Chile is the likely predecessor of Mediterranean‐type sclerophyllous forests of central Chile (32–33° S). Despite foliar resemblance between the late pre‐Pleistocene and extant forest floras, our palaeoclimatic reconstructions suggest that modern assemblages exist under climatic conditions that do not match their foliar physiognomy. We attribute this convergence in foliar morphology to the ‘evolutionary inertia’ of surviving lineages, favoured by the buffering effect of the coastal environment on climatic variability.  相似文献

Cymatium (Monoplex) keenae Beu, 1970, the neopolitan triton, is a Ranellidae predator distributed in tropical and subtropical waters. In this study we report this species for the first time in Antofagasta Bay, northern Chile. Adult specimens have been found since June 2003 at depths ranging from 5 to 15 m in La Rinconada Marine Reserve (23°28′18″S, 70°30′46″W) in Antofagasta Bay, near a scallop farming facility. The present findings clearly extend the geographic range of C. keenae, which previously had been reported from La Paz, Gulf of California (Mexico) to Galápagos Islands (Ecuador) in the SE Pacific. Previous evidence strongly suggests that the intrusion of this tropical immigrant can be related to warm El Niño episodes. We analyze the key role of the oceanographic characteristics of Antofagasta Bay as potential temporal refuge for this species.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a phytosociological and gradient analysis of the vegetation occurring along an altitudinal gradient from Turi (3100 m) to Cerro León (4250 m) on the western flank of the Andes in northern Chile (22°06′–22°22′ S; 68°15′–68°07′ W). Along the transect, the total cover of vegetation ranges from 2.5% at the lower end to 35.7% at 4000 m altitude. Four major physiognomic zones, including six associations are recognized within the transect studied: (1) The ‘Pre-Puna’ belt (2700–3150 m), characterized by a sparse cover of xerophytic subshrubs, including two associations: Acantholippia deserticola-Franseria meyeniana, which occurs over the sedimentary sands around Turi, and Franseria meyeniana-Helogyne macrogyne-Helianthocereus atacamensis, restricted to ravines and canyons. (2) The ‘Puna’ belt (3150–3850 m), physiognomically dominated by shrubs and presenting the highest vegetational cover, including the: Fabiana densa-Baccharis boliviensis, and Junellia seriphioides-Baccharis incarum-Lampaya medicinalis, associations. (3) The ‘High-Andean’ belt, localized above the ‘Puna’, including the Fabiana bryoides-Adesmia horrida and Oxalis exigua-Mulinum crassifolium associations. (4) The ‘Subnival’ belt, a high mountain semi-desert with a poorly developed vegetation. Only three species occur at the upper vegetational limit (4380 m). The phytosociological scheme proposed in this paper can be paralleled with that by Ruthsatz (1977) for the eastern flank of the Andes. A marked contrast in species richness and phytosociological complexity between these Andean regions is pointed out. Lower species richness of the Chilean transect is related to the presence of the Atacama desert, which extends from the coast up to 2700 m in the study area.  相似文献

Succulent plants in arid areas are believed to be often associated with high altitudes, except where they form the dominant, zonal vegetation such as in the Succulent Karoo Biome of southern Africa. To test this hypothesis the contribution of perennial succulents to inselberg floras was investigated on twenty-two isolated mountains (inselbergs) at four study sites (Etendeka–Barab: 19°34′ S/13°42′ E; Spitzkoppe: 21°49′ S/15°09′ E; Namibrand: 25°17′ S/15°47′ E; and Sperrgebiet: 27°43′ S/16°04′ E) along a nearly 1000 km bioclimatic gradient in the Namib Desert and adjacent areas, from the Succulent Karoo in the south to the northern Namib, and along altitude gradients.The contribution of succulents to the flora clearly increased with altitude at the two central study sites, thus showing a hump-shaped trend along the bioclimatic gradient. No such correlation was found at the northern and southern end of the bioclimatic gradient. The surrounding (rocky) lowlands likely resulted in a more even distribution of succulents throughout the landscape in the north, while the position in the heartland of the succulent flora in southern Africa at the southern-most site, levelled out potential patterns related to altitude. Nevertheless, even here, a fair number of succulents restricted to mountain habitats occur. This is the case in all other study sites, where succulents restricted to mountain habitats are always present.Some perennial succulents, such as Aridaria noctiflora, Euphorbia gummifera and Tetragonia reduplicata indicate an upward movement with increasing distance from the Succulent Karoo, by growing on plains and lowlands in the Succulent Karoo, but only on inselbergs at study sites north of the Succulent Karoo.Many of the mountain specialist succulents are sought after by plant collectors, such as species of Conophytum, Crassula and Lithops. Protecting and monitoring vulnerable populations as well as growing these in horticulture may help to alleviate the pressure on some of these rare species in nature. Preserving genetic material of isolated populations from mountain tops ex situ is another important conservation measure, and particularly important in the view of anticipated climatic change.  相似文献

Morphological variation among natural populations is a phenomenon commonly observed in marine invertebrates and well studied, particularly, in shelled gastropods. The nassariid Buccinanops globulosus is interesting to study shell shape variation because it exhibits strong interpopulation differences in life history features, including maximum size, fecundity and growth rate. In this study, we examined the pattern of variation in size and shell shape among populations and between sexes of B. globulosus (Bahía San Antonio 40°29′S 63°01′W, Playa Villarino 40°45′S 64°40′W and Bahía Nueva 42°46′S 65°02′W). In particular, we used geometric morphometric techniques to test: (1) whether the two components of shell morphology (size and shape) are independent and (2) whether shape differences between sexes are consistently found among populations, regardless of their body sizes. Our results show shell shape variation between the populations of B. globulosus of northern Patagonia. Intra-specific shell shape variation is affected by body size, indicating allometry. Regardless of the size differences, individuals from Playa Villarino have high-spired shells, and shorter apertures and wider columellar area than individuals from the other populations. Also, sex-related shape differences were consistently found at each population, thus suggesting a common sexual dimorphism in shell morphology for this species. The functional significance of the variability found is discussed in terms of the flexibility of developmental programmes for morphology as well as the evolution of phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Along the west coast of South America mangroves are found only outside the area influenced by the cold Peruvian Current. At 6° S (near ‘Cerro Illescas’) the current turns west to the open sea in the direction of the Galapagos Islands. Dense mangrove vegetation with a tree height up to 15 m occurs only north of 3° 35′ S from the delta of the river Tumbes (Peru). At 3° 44′ S some small individuals of Rhizophora and at 5° 30′ S a small stand of Avicennia can be found. In the transition zone between 3° 35′ and 6° S no mangrove forest occurs. The reasons for the lack of mangal in the transition zone are:
  1. Evapotranspiration and atmospheric humidity show significant differences between the mangrove region and the transition zone. In this zone soil conditions like salinity, water and organic matter content and the geological structure can also be considered as inhibiting mangrove growth.
  2. Topographic conditions in this zone are not suitable for mangal and the lack of a regular annual flow from rivers provides a sharp limit for the existence of mangal in the delta of the river Tumbes. Nevertheless, cultivation of mangrove species south of the mangrove region is possible and seems promising.

Three argasid tick larvae were collected on April 2, 2010, from a common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, captured in the Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar (26°09?? S, 70°41?? W), Region of Atacama, Chile. The larvae were diagnosed as Ornithodoros, and further comparative analysis showed them to be Ornithodoros peruvianus Kohls, Clifford & Jones or a species close to it. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S mitochondrial rRNA gene sequences of Ornithodoros species plus four Argas species was carried out to clarify the taxonomic position of the larvae. This is the first finding of ticks parasitizing D. rotundus in Chile.  相似文献

In the Black Sea, the sea anemone Sagartia elegans (Dalyell, 1848) has been found for the first time in the Gulf of Odessa (46°31′60 N, 30°48′ E) and karst caves and grottos of the Western Crimea (45°21′ N, 32°30′ E). Previously, S. elegans was known to inhabit coastal waters of Iceland, the British Isles, and continental Europe from Scandinavia to the Adriatic Sea. According to the available data, this gonochoristic species tends to asexual somatic reproduction through laceration: juvenile polyps develop from separated fragments of the pedal disc. A rich color polymorphism is observed. The numerous clonal populations that are found in caves consist of variously sized and similarly colored polyps. Abstract: Twelve species of Sticta are recorded from southern South America (Argentina and Chile including Juan Fernandez) south of latitude 30°S, viz., S. ainoae, S. caulescens, S. fuliginosa, S. gaudichaldia, S. hypochra, S. hypopsila, S. lineariloba, S. limbata, S. longipes, S. sublimbata and S. weigelii, and S. santessonii D. Results of paleoparasitological examination of rodent coprolites collected from archaeological and paleontological sites from Patagonia, Argentina, are present. Each coprolite was processed, rehydrated, homogenized, spontaneously sedimented and examined using light microscope. Coprolites and eggs were described, measured and photographed, and were compared with current faeces of Lagidium viscacia. Eggs with morphological features, attributed to an anoplocephalid cestode were found in samples collected from Cueva Huenul 1 (36°56′45″S, 69°47′32″W, Neuquén Province, Holocene) and Los Altares Profile (43º53′35″S, 68º23′21″W, Chubut Province, Late Holocene). These are the first findings of this anoplocephalid from faecal material from patagonic rodents.  相似文献

According to the global latitudinal diversity gradient, a decrease in animal and plant species richness exists from the tropics towards higher latitudes. The aim of this study was to describe the latitudinal distribution patterns of Chilean continental flora and delineate biogeographic regions along a 4270‐km north–south gradient. We reviewed plant lists for each of the 39 parallels of continental Chile to build a database of the geographical distribution of vascular plant species comprising 184 families, 957 genera and 3787 species, which corresponded to 100%, 94.9% and 74.2% of the richness previously defined for Chile, respectively. Using this latitudinal presence–absence species matrix, we identified areas with high plant richness and endemism and performed a Cluster analysis using Jaccard index to delineate biogeographic regions. This study found that richness at family, genus and species levels follow a unimodal 4270‐km latitudinal distribution curve, with a concentration of richness in central Chile (31–42°S). The 37th parallel south (central Chile) presented the highest richness for all taxonomic levels and in specific zones the endemism (22–37°S) was especially high. This unimodal pattern contrasts the global latitudinal diversity gradient shown by other studies in the Northern hemisphere. Seven floristic regions were identified in this latitudinal gradient: tropical (18–22°S), north Mediterranean (23–28°S), central Mediterranean (29–32°S), south Mediterranean (33–37°S), north temperate (38–42°S), south temperate (43–52°S) and Austral (53–56°S). This regionalization coincides with previous bioclimatic classifications and illustrates the high heterogeneity of the biodiversity in Chile and the need for a reconsideration of governmental conservation strategies to protect this diversity throughout Chile.  相似文献

Evidence on occurrence in catches and characteristic of the spatial-bathymetric distribution and size indices of four species of Cottidae—frog sculpin Myoxocephalus stelleri, brightbelly sculpin Microcottus sellaris, antlered sculpin Enophrys diceraus, and furseal sculpin Stelgistrum stejnegeri—in summer-autumn months in the Okhotsk Sea waters off Kamchatka (site from 51°15′ to 57°20′ N, depths of 11–100 m) are provided. The first three species occur mainly in the northern part of the shelf above 54° N at depths smaller than 30–40 m within a comparatively well warmed surface water mass of seasonal modification at near-bottom temperature values above 6°C at various solid grounds. Maximum catches of S. stejnegeri were recorded only at a site of the western Kamchatka shelf from 54°00′ to 54°20′ N on pebbly-stony ground in a narrow bathy-metric range of 41–60 m on the boundary between the well warmed surface water mass of autumn modification and the cold intermediate water mass at a water temperature below 2°C. Evidence on the size-weight indices of the studied species of Cottidae in trawl catches in the Okhotsk Sea waters off Kamchatka in the study period is provided.  相似文献
