Recent studies on the epidemoiological pattern of taenisis in Southeast Asia have indicated the existence of a third form of human Taenia which is distinguishable from Taenia saginata and T. solium. Don McManus and Josephine Bowles here review how new genetic evidence supports earlier conclusions that the Asian Taenia is a distinct entity but is closely related T. saginata, and suggests its taxonomic classification as a subspecies or strain of T. saginata is more appropriate than formal designation as a new species.  相似文献

Chemical and physiological functions of molecular oxygen and reactive oxygen species (ROS)and existing equilibrium between pools of pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants providing steady state ROS level vital for normal mitochondrial and cell functioning are reviewed. The presence of intracellular oxygen and ROS sensors is postulated and few candidates for this role are suggested. Possible involvement of ROS in the process of fragmentation of mitochondrial reticulum made of long mitochondrial filaments serving in the cell as electric cables, as well as the role of ROS in apoptosis and programmed mitochondrial destruction (mitoptosis) are reviewed. The critical role of ROS in destructive processes under ischemia/reoxygenation and ischemic preconditioning is discussed. The loss of a species from an ecological community can trigger a cascade of secondary extinctions. The probability of secondary extinction to take place and the number of secondary extinctions are likely to depend on the characteristics of the species that is lost--the strength of its interactions with other species--as well as on the distribution of interaction strengths in the whole community. Analysing the effects of species loss in model communities we found that removal of the following species categories triggered, on average, the largest number of secondary extinctions: (a) rare species interacting strongly with many consumers, (b) abundant basal species interacting weakly with their consumers and (c) abundant intermediate species interacting strongly with many resources. We also found that the keystone status of a species with given characteristics was context dependent, that is, dependent on the structure of the community where it was embedded. Species vulnerable to secondary extinctions were mainly species interacting weakly with their resources and species interacting strongly with their consumers.  相似文献

Metacercarial aggregation of Fasciola hepatica and Paramphistomum daubneyi was studied under experimental conditions to determine if the formation of these aggregates was influenced by environmental factors, or it was a characteristic of trematode species. This process was studied using the confinement of infected snails on the bottom of Petri dishes (diameter, 14 cm) for 3 days. The formation of metacercarial aggregates of F. hepatica was not significantly modified by environmental factors such as intensity and duration of lighting, quality and volume of water. Metacercariae of F. hepatica were more numerous on the Petri dish walls and 63.9% of them constituted aggregates. In contrast, most metacercariae of P. daubneyi were found on the Petri dish bottoms and 78.3% of them were isolated or in groups of two metacercariae each. The mean number of metacercariae per aggregate ranged from 6.7 to 12.2 in the case of F. hepatica, and from 2.7 to 4.5 in the case of P. daubneyi. However, these mean numbers were independent of the site of cercarial attachment. The tendency of cercariae to form metacercarial aggregations was a characteristic of F. hepatica and was species determined.  相似文献

The availability of molecular markers has renewed interest in the taxonomy of parasitic protozoa at the subspecific and specific levels. Nevertheless, the conclusions reached are heavily dependent upon the way the data are analyzed. Some authors have emphasized the value of genetic distances to propose the creation o f new species, while others have rather favoured a population genetic approach to account for the intraspecific variability of parasites. In this article, using three illustrative cases, Michel Tibayrenc shows that dissimilar taxonomic approaches can be built from quite comparable sets of data.  相似文献

In view of the recent debate on the future of invasion biology, we argue that species could be regarded as invasive only when after adaptation in non-native habitats they reach yet another fitness maximum. We suggest that invasion biologists need to unambiguously clarify what constitutes being “invasive” to refute those who call for an end to invasion biology.  相似文献

They unravel the integral adaptive and active nature of the organism behavior in the environment. It is impossible to develop modern concepts about the determinants of goal-directed behavior of animals and voluntary activity of humans without in-depth study of the achievements of these Russian physiological schools which not only formed the methodological basis for the current studies but also directed the way for their further development.  相似文献

The genus Sellaphora has become a model system for studies of the species concept, speciation and automated identification in diatoms. Three species, S. pupula, S. bacillum and S. laevissima, have proved to be complexes containing several or many species, which are difficult to distinguish morphologically but which are genetically differentiated and (where tested) reproductively isolated. Until now, however, there has been little information about the ecology of the species within this complex, except in relation to parasite sensitivity. In order to test whether semi- and pseudo-cryptic Sellaphora species are ecologically differentiated with respect to trophic status, we used tools recently developed in the UK in response to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Diatom samples from three substrata (plants, rocks, sediment) were taken from 22 lakes in Scotland and England, covering a gradient from oligotrophic mountain lakes to eutrophic lowland ponds. The epilithic and epiphytic diatom assemblages were used to evaluate lake trophic status according to the UK WFD assessment system and showed that there was a strong environmental gradient in the dataset. Sellaphora species occurred in the sediment-derived epipelon and their distributions were analysed in relation to the trophic gradient. A total of 28 Sellaphora phenodemes (putative species) were found, and some of them differed in their environmental demands. Two groups were distinguished: (1) a group indicating rather oligotrophic conditions and containing several demes with linear valves and subcapitate or capitate poles (referred to here as S. [pupula] cap-A, cap-B and cap-C and (2) a group occurring in eutrophic lakes and containing the recently described species S. blackfordensis, S. capitata and S. obesa, as well as S. [pupula] Φ ‘small lanceolate’. A taxonomic update is provided for Paracorethrura Melichar, 1915. P. arrhen n. sp. is described from Vietnam and brings up the number of species to two for the genus: P. iocnemis (Jacobi, 1905) being known only by female specimens and P. arrhen only by males, CO1 sequences are provided in order to check if they are truly two different species or if we are witnessing some sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Tuber aestivum and Tuber uncinatum: two morphotypes or two species?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Tuber spp. are ectomycorrhizal fungi that establish symbioses with shrubs and trees. Because of their different smell and taste, Tuber uncinatum and Tuber aestivum are two truffle morphotypes with a different market value, but whether or not T. uncinatum and T. aestivum are different taxa is still an open debate among mycologists. In order to identify molecular keys characterizing both T. aestivum and T. uncinatum morphotypes, ITS/RFLPs analyses were carried out on a large collection of samples from all over Italy and from other European countries, followed by a study of the phylogenesis of ITS, beta-tubulin and EF 1-alpha genes, on representative samples. The present study provides compelling evidence that: (i) T. uncinatum and T. aestivum belong to the same species, (ii) neither morphotype presents a specific molecular fingerprint, but they may even share identical alleles at any of the loci analysed; (iii) T. aestivum is most likely under a selfing reproductive mode. Our findings suggest that ecological, rather than genetic causes may account for differences in sporal morphology, taste and smell between T. aestivum and T. uncinatum truffles.  相似文献

The reaction of 9,10-bis[(cyclopentadienylmethyl)thallium(I)]anthracene (2), obtained from 9,10-bis(cyclopentadienylmethyl)anthracene (1), with the chloro derivatives of rhodium(I) of formula [RhClL2]2 (L=η2-C8H14 or L24-C8H12) leads to the corresponding bimetallic complexes [L2Rh{C5H4CH2(9,10-anthrylene)CH2C5H4}RhL2] 3 (L=η2-C8H14) and 4 (L24-C8H12), in 22.8% and 15.0% yields, respectively. Analogously, by reacting 2 with [IrClL2]2 (L=η2-C8H14 or L24-C8H12), the corresponding bimetallic iridium(I) complexes [L2Ir{C5H4CH2(9,10-anthrylene)CH2C5H4}IrL2] 5 (L=η2-C8H14) and 6 (L24-C8H12) were obtained, in 24.5% and 43.0% yields, respectively. All complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and 1H NMR. The structure of 4 was elucidated also by single crystal X-ray diffraction: it crystallises in the P21/c space group with a=19.932(11), b=6.4417(4), c=12.377(2) Å; α=90°, β=100.90(4)°, γ=90°. V=1560.5(9) Å3. Z=2, Dcalc=1.606 g cm−1, R1=0.0449 [I>σ(I)], wR2=0.1121. The UV-Vis spectra (280-530 nm) of 3-6 are indicative of the existence of strong electronic interactions among the 9,10-anthrylene chromophore and the two cyclopentadienylML2 moieties. When excited at ca. 370 nm, 1 results to be an efficient light-emitting molecule, while the fluorescence emission of the 9,10-anthrylene chromophore is almost completely quenched in complexes 3-6. The study of the electrochemical behaviour of 3-6 in strictly aprotic conditions allows a satisfactory interpretation of the observed electrode processes and gives information about the location of the redox sites along with the thermodynamic characterisation of the corresponding redox processes. These data show that the occurrence of an intramolecular charge-transfer process between the photo-excited 9,10-anthrylene group and the cyclopentadienylML2 moiety is a possible route for the observed quenching of emission in the compounds 3-6. The one-electron oxidation of compounds 3-6 by thallium(III) trifluoroacetate leads to the formation of the corresponding cation radicals. Three of them, i.e., 3+, 5+ and 6+, give rise to good X-band EPR spectra that were fully interpreted by computer simulation as well as by semi-empirical calculations (PM3 level) of the spin density distribution.  相似文献

The factors responsible for the maintenance of genetic variation among natural populations remain a mystery. Recent models of host-parasite co-evolution assume that parasites exert frequency-dependent selection on their hosts by favouring rare alleles that may confer resistance against infection. We tested this prediction in a comparative analysis that sought relationships between levels of genetic variation and the number of metazoan parasite species exploiting each host species. We used data on 40 species of North American freshwater fishes. After controlling for sampling effort and phylogenetic influences, we found no relationship between genetic polymorphism and parasite species richness among fish species. However, we found a marginal negative correlation between parasite species richness and heterozygosity. This result goes against the prediction that increased selective pressure by parasites should be associated with higher levels of genetic variation. Instead, it suggests that parasites may be colonising host species showing low levels of genetic variation with greater success than genetically more variable host species.  相似文献

Activated phagocytes produce "reactive oxygen, halogen and nitrogen species" that help to kill some types of microorganism. How these species destroy microorganisms remains, however, an enigma: both direct oxidative damage and indirect damage (whereby reactive species promote the actions of other antibacterial agents) are involved, and no single mechanism is likely to account for the killing of all microorganisms. Phagocyte-derived reactive species are known to injure human tissues and to contribute to inflammation. Recently, however, we have learned that they can also be anti-inflammatory by modulating the immune response. These data have implications for the proposed use of antioxidants to treat inflammation.  相似文献

The question as to why some communities are more invasible than others has pro-found implications for conservation biology and land management. The theoretical issues involved go right to the heart of our understanding of species coexistence and community assembly. The experiment reported here indicates that for productive, small-scale grassland plots, species identity matters more than species richness in determining both the number of invading species and the total biomass of invasives.  相似文献

Specimens of the Paradiplozoon homoion-complex were collected from ten species of cyprinid fish in the Czech Republic. A combined molecular and morphometric approach was performed to distinguish Paradiplozoon homoion and P. gracile. The second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of the ribosomal RNA genes was amplified and sequences were analysed. No variability in the analysed sequences was detected. Measurements of clamps and the central hooks obtained from specimens from different host species were compared. Great variability was found in the length and width of the third pair of clamps. No significant differences were detected in the measurements of the central hook sickle. A positive relationship was found between host size and each of the following measurements of the third pair clamps: length and width of the whole clamp; and length of the median plate of the third pair of clamps. The length of the median plate of the attachment clamps may be a useful character for species identification of diplozoids. Further molecular and morphometric studies are required to resolve this taxonomic problem and, henceforth, we suggest considering P. gracile as a species inquirenda.  相似文献

An RFLP analysis of the chloroplast genetrnK of 32 species of the generaPapaver, Roemeria, Stylomecon, andMeconopsis leads to the following conclusions: (1) AsianMeconopsis consists of two distinct clades and is paraphyletic in relation toPapaver, Roemeria, Stylomecon, and the W EuropeanMeconopsis cambrica. (2) Sister group relationships ofRoemeria toPapaver sect.Argemonidium and ofStylomecon toPapaver californicum are well-supported. (3)Meconopsis cambrica is nested withinPapaver (incl.Roemeria andStylomecon). The consideration of morphology, geographical distribution and ecology leads to the conclusion thatM. cambrica is best regarded as a member ofMeconopsis, and thatPapaver arose polyphyletically from within a paraphyleticMeconopsis in response to Tertiary climatic aridification. — The removal ofM. cambrica from the taxon matrix is discussed. It is concluded that this experiment illuminates the importance of critical taxon sampling, and shows that at least potentially the assessment of taxa as mono-, para-, or polyphyletic may characterize their present status only and need not reflect their phylogenetic history.  相似文献
