Polyxylic columnar stems covered by persistent leaf bases and found in sediments assignable to the Upper Cretaceous of Bajo de Santa Rosa, Río Negro Province, Argentina, are described as two new generic entities in the Cycadales. Anatomical characters are the basis for their being assigned to the Encephalartoideae of the Zamiaceae.Brunoa santarrosensis gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of polyxyly, cone domes, mucilage cavities, and uniseriate to triseriate araucaroid, scalariform, or bordered intervascular pitting.Worsdellia bonettiae gen. et sp. nov. has polyxyly, anastomosing medullary vascular bundles, centripetal xylem, mucilage canals, and concentric extraxylary bundles. Some characters (polyxyly, medullary vascular bundles, and cone domes) were used to determine the systematic position, while other characters (mucilage reservoirs and centripetal xylem) were used to establish the relationship between polyxylic and monoxylic forms.  相似文献

Secondary growth in the stem of Dolichos lablab is achieved by the formation of eccentric successive rings of vascular bundles. The stem is composed of parenchymatous ground tissue and xylem and phloem confined to portions of small cambial segments. However, development of new cambial segments can be observed from the obliterating ray parenchyma, the outermost phloem parenchyma and the secondary cortical parenchyma. Initially cambium develops as small segments, which latter become joined to form a complete cylinder of vascular cambium. Each cambial ring is functionally divided into two distinct regions. The one segment of cambium produces thick-walled lignified xylem derivatives in centripetal direction and phloem elements centrifugally. The other segment produces only thin-walled parenchyma on both xylem and phloem side. In mature stems, some of the axial parenchyma embedded deep inside the xylem acquires meristematic activity and leads to the formation of thick-walled xylem derivatives centrifugally and phloem elements centripetally. The secondary xylem comprises vessel elements, tracheids, fibres and axial parenchyma. Rays are uni-multiseriate in the region of cambium that produces xylem and phloem derivatives, while in some of the regions of cambium large multiseriate, compound, aggregate and polycentric rays can be noticed.  相似文献

The stem specimens of Sigillaria cf. brardii were collected from the coal balls of Upper Permian in Shuicheng Coal Mines in Guizhou Province. The main anatomical characteristics of Sigillaria cf. brardii are described as follows: The stem is siphonostelic, with pith composed entirely of polygonal parenchyma cells, there are secondary walls in some pith cell cavities these secondary walls show the characters of cell division. Surrounding the pith is the continuous cylindrical primary xylem which consists entirely of tracheids. The outermost, and part are the protoxylem elements show spiral secondary thickenings. In cross section, the outer edge of exarch primary xylem appears regularly sinuous, with trace of mesarch leaf originating from the furrows. The centripetal metaxylem is characterized by scalariform wall thickenings on the tracheids, and delicated strands of secondary wall materials extending between abjacent bars, these structures are called fimbris, or williamson striations, and are characteristic in lepidodendrids. The secondary xylem consists of tracheids and vascular rays. The tracheids, too, have scalariform wall thickenings and fimbris. The rays are one-to twocell width and several to more than ten cells in height.  相似文献

Investigations revealed that the anatomy of the primary radicularroot of yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus L.) was typically dicotyledonousexcept that the xylem was not completely developed centripetally.Most of the roots had tetrarch xylem, although a few triarchand pentarch roots were also observed. In both tuberous andnon-tuberous roots, secondary thickening occurred by the formationof the meristematic vascular cambium which formed secondarytissues in a normal fashion. Subsequently, tuberization wasinitiated in the secondary xylem by the development of anomalous‘secondary’ cambia from parenchyma cells surroundingvessel elements. Anomalous ‘secondary’ cambia alsodeveloped from parenchyma cells not associated with vessels.Subsequently, anomalous ‘tertiary’ cambia differentiatedfrom tissues produced by the anomalous ‘secondary’cambia. Activities of these anomalous cambia resulted in theproduction of parenchyma storage cells and were chiefly responsiblefor the growth of the mature tuber. A study of the leaf traces at the nodes in various species and varietal forms of Taxus, Torreya, Amentotaxus and Cephalotaxus reveals, only in Cephalotaxus, an unusual type of parenchymatous tissue associated with the xylem of the leaf trace. The cells of this tissue occur in one to three layers, have abundant cytoplasm and conspicuous nuclei. The thin walls of these cells are devoid of pits and show spiral or spiral-reticulate thickenings. These thickenings, although readily taking the counterstain, reveal the presence of lignin as determined by the phloroglucin test and by fluorescence microscopy. This tissue is always internal—that is, adaxial—to the protoxylem of the trace. From the node it accompanies the trace for a short distance into the leaf base, where it gives way centrally to the typical leaf parenchyma and laterally to the transfusion tissue on the flanks of the bundle. In the basipetal direction it is in contact with the inner face of the annular protoxylem of the stele, eventually disappearing in the typical pith parenchyma. This tissue occasionally reveals instances of well-lignified tracheid-like centripetal elements. On the basis of the characteristics of this tissue, it is suggested that its origin lies in former centripetal xylem. The significance of this tissue to the evolution of the stele and the systematic position of Cephalotaxus is discussed.  相似文献

Srivastava , L. M., and K. Esau . (U. California, Davis.) Relation of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium) to the xylem tissue of conifers. I. Anatomy of parasite sinkers and their connection with host xylem. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(2): 159–167. Illus. 1961.—The anatomy of the sinkers of Arceuthobium infecting 7 species of conifers was studied by the use of serial cross, radial, and tangential sections of the host wood. The sinkers were found to be composed of parenchyma cells only, or of parenchyma cells and tracheary elements, including vessel elements. In all species tracheary cells of the sinkers had direct contacts with the host tracheids of axial and radial systems. Typically the sinkers were associated with rays of the host wood. In some species, the centripetal ends of sinkers were wedged in radially among the axial tracheids of the host, but centrifugally such sinkers were usually found associated with rays. In the region of the host cambium the sinker contained parenchyma cells meristematic in appearance and, in 6 out of 7 species, also mature tracheary elements. The oldest of these elements became stretched and ruptured, a circumstance indicating that growth occurred in the part of the sinker embedded in the host cambium. This growth appeared to be coordinated with that of the host cambium, so that the sinker became embedded in the host xylem and phloem. Radial centripetal penetration of sinkers among differentiating axial tracheids of the host possibly occurred to a limited extent.  相似文献

Abstract

Xylem origin and evolution in the Tracheophyta. - The research on the xylem origin and evolution leads to investigate three features - guides:

—Passage from homoxyly to heteroxyly.

—Reduction of the importance of primary centripetal xylem in geological time.

—Progressive decrease of initial cambial cells lenght in the main groups of plants.

In this connection, one should recall the phloem-xylem evolution laws instituted by Chauveaud (1931).

From this well defined estimations on fossil vascular plants with secondary xylem, a clear evaluation of phylogenic significance of wood pattern by means of correlation with a wide range of various anatomical features is reached.

Salient evolutionnary trends of secondary xylem are illustrated with significative pattern examples related more particulary to fossil homoxylous structures of Sphenophyta, Gymnosperms and homoxylous or heteroxylous Dicotyledons.

Furthermore, unusual and rare structure of Pentoxylales and Rhexoxylales, particularly with regard to the cambium functionning must be recalled.  相似文献

The compatible interaction between the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, and the GMI1000 strain of the phytopathogenic bacterium, Ralstonia solanacearum, was investigated in an in vitro pathosystem. We describe the progression of the bacteria in the root from penetration at the root surface to the xylem vessels and the cell type-specific, cell wall-associated modifications that accompanies bacterial colonization. Within 6?days post inoculation, R. solanacearum provoked a rapid plasmolysis of the epidermal, cortical, and endodermal cells, including those not directly in contact with the bacteria. Plasmolysis was accompanied by a global degradation of pectic homogalacturonanes as shown by the loss of JIM7 and JIM5 antibody signal in the cell wall of these cell types. As indicated by immunolabeling with Rsol-I antibodies that specifically recognize R. solanacearum, the bacteria progresses through the root in a highly directed, centripetal manner to the xylem poles, without extensive multiplication in the intercellular spaces along its path. Entry into the vascular cylinder was facilitated by cell collapse of the two pericycle cells located at the xylem poles. Once the bacteria reached the xylem vessels, they multiplied abundantly and moved from vessel to vessel by digesting the pit membrane between adjacent vessels. The degradation of the secondary walls of xylem vessels was not a prerequisite for vessel colonization as LM10 antibodies strongly labeled xylem cell walls, even at very late stages in disease development. Finally, the capacity of R. solanacearum to specifically degrade certain cell wall components and not others could be correlated with the arsenal of cell wall hydrolytic enzymes identified in the bacterial genome.  相似文献

The genera of the Veratreae, a tribe of the Melanthioideae, have many features in common: there are usually many ovules, except for Amianthium (with 2 4), arranged in 2 -4 longitudinal placental rows per carpel; all are bitegmic, basipetal, and campylotropous. Of 37 species examined, only 2 have open sutures at the lowermost level of ovular insertion, but 13 species have holes in the centre of the pistil. These holes may represent possible stages in the evolutionary closure of previously open sutures. Most flowers were epigynous, only 11 being hypogynous-perigynous. The tribe as a whole is marked by the presence of 3 composite (heterologous) vascular bundles, composed of joined staminal and tepallary bundles alone and 3 composite bundles, as above, fused to a dorsal bundle. The bundles were united below the locular base in all genera except Schoenocaulon and Toxicoscordion. Two major kinds of central cylinder arrangement occurred at the level of the lowermost ovular insertion: either 6 inverted ventral bundles or 6 simple septal bundles, with normally arranged (or sometimes inverted) xylem and phloem centrifugally located and 6 simple placental bundles, with inverted xylem and phloem, at the centripetal end of the septum. Generally each septal bundle united with its nearest adjoining placental bundle about the mid-locular level.  相似文献

The development of tap root anatomical features was investigated in seedlings of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) under both pot and pouch growth regimes. The roots possessed the three anatomical zones previously observed in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb) and Eucalyptus pilularis Sm. - white, condensed tannin (CT), and cork - suggesting that this developmental sequence is preserved over species and growth conditions. Xylem development was centripetal and similar to that found earlier in P. sylvestris. Tracheids with lignified, secondary walls were detected distal to the point of endodermal Casparian band deposition. However, tests for ability to conduct fluid indicated that the protoxylem was capable of transport only proximal to the Casparian bands. Detailed examination of suberin lamella deposition in the endodermis demonstrated that passage cells were present through the white and CT zones. Progressive, centripetal cortical death in the CT zone did not include the endodermis, which remained alive until the cork layer formed, at which point the endodermis was crushed. Therefore, passage cells remain as functional portals for nutrient and water uptake in the CT zone even though the central cortex is dead. Tracer tests indicated that the endodermis provides an apoplastic barrier to tracer diffusion into the stele and that this function was taken over by the young cork layers. Results of this study point to a strong role for the endodermis in the regulation of nutrient and water uptake until the maturation of the first cork layer.  相似文献

Phytolacca dioica L., an evergreen tree of the Phytolaccaceae, is one of the species of Phytolacca which shows anomalous secondary thickening in its stem. This mode of thickening has been regarded as successive cambial activity or alternatively, in some more recent interpretations, as thickening by unidirectional activity of a cambial zone. The stem thickening of P. dioica is of the former type. The cambium produces fascicular strands, showing centrifugal differentiation of xylem and centripetal differentiation of phloem on opposite sides of the cambial layer, and rays are produced between the fascicular areas. In both xylem and phloem the younger elements are closer to the cambium than the older elements. Succeeding cambia arise periodically by periclinal divisions in a layer of parenchyma cells two or three cells beyond the outermost intact phloem derived from the current cambium. Each cambium forms a few parenchyma cells on both sides before it forms derivatives which mature into lignified xylem elements or conductive elements of the phloem. The parenchyma thus formed toward the outside later becomes the site of the origin of the succeeding cambium. Only one or two layers of this phloem parenchyma go on to form the new cambium; the remaining cells accumulate between the outermost phloem and the cortex. P. weberbaueri shows stem structure similar to P. dioica. P. meziana, a shrub, shows normal stem structure.  相似文献

We describe a method for perfusing the xylem in the stele of excised onion roots with solutions of known composition under a pressure gradient. Tracer studies using [14C] polyethylene glycol 4000 and the fluorescent dye, Tinopal CBSX, indicated that perfusing solutions passed exclusively through the xylem vessels. The conductance of the xylem was small over the apical 100 mm of the root axis but increased markedly between 100 and 200 mm. Unbuffered perfusion solutions supplied in the range pH 3.7–7.8 emerged after passage through the xylem adjusted to pH 5.2–6.0, indicating the presence of mechanisms for absorbing or releasing protons. This adjustment continued over many hours with net proton fluxes apparently determined by the disparity between the pH of the perfusion solution and the usual xylem sap pH of about 5.5. Mild acidification of the xylem sap by buffered perfusion solutions increased the release of 86Rb (K+) and 35SO4 2- from the stelar tissue into the xylem stream. The ion-transporting properties of onion roots seemed little changed by excision from the bulbs, or by removal of the apical zones of the root axis. The pH of sap produced by root pressure resembles that found in the outflow solutions of perfused root segments.  相似文献

Cut twigs of Monterey pine(Pinus radiata D.Don) were banded with a 14C labelled morphactin formulation and the lower half of the twig placed in a Scholander type pressure bomb. Water was pumped through the twig from a reservoir inside the bomb and exudate collected from the protruding end of the twig. Using this method it was possible to determine that the slowest step in the translocation of morphactin was the passage across the outer layer of bark. Subsequent passage through the twig was not affected by girdling the bark suggesting that morphactin was translocated upwards via the xylem. The 14C compound in the exudate from live twigs differed from morphactin and was tentatively identified as the carboxylic acid derivative of the morphactin ester. The cut twig system facilitated studies on the uptake, metabolism and translocation of morphactin and should prove useful for studying the uptake and fate of other chemicals considered for bark application to trees.  相似文献

The hydrostatic pressure gradient across the root cortex inducedby transpiration was simulated by raising the pressure on themedium surrounding the roots of detopped tomato (Lycopersicumesculentum) and castoroil plants (Ricinus communis).Applyinga pressure of 2 atm. resulted in a doubling of the sodium fluxfrom medium to xylern (table I). This flux depended on a maintainedsuply of Na in the medium (fig.1) indicating that there wasa small but readily available storage and exchange capacityfor Na in the root tissues. In the presence of metabolic inhaibitorsthe Na flux was considerablyu reduced and equalled the fluxof mannitol (talble II) believed to be a passive mass flow.The Na flux under a pressure gradient appeared therefore tobe metabollism-facilitated. Metabolic inhibition after the rootshad been allowed to take up Na led to a large flux of sodiuminto the xylem (Fig.2). This was considered to come from a largeunavailable store in the roots. Metabolism-facilitated processes also appeared to predominatein the flux of calcium to the xylem of Ricinus, buit not inthe flux through tomato roots. The location of the centripetal metabolism-facilitated transferand the available and unavailable stores is discussed in relationto the effects of pressure gradients.  相似文献

采用在根内生成有色铜沉淀的方法研究大豆(Glycine max)初生根凯氏带对铜离子的通透性。用真空泵抽取浓度为200μmol·L^–1的CuSO4溶液进入根中,然后在重力作用下从根基部灌注400μmol·L^–1的K4[Fe(CN)6]溶液,两种物质在根内相遇即可产生棕色的Cu2[Fe(CN)6]沉淀,根据沉淀的位置来确定铜离子所经过的途径。结果表明:Cu^2+可以穿过内皮层凯氏带,在木质部导管壁以及凯氏带至木质部之间的细胞壁处产生棕色沉淀,侧根发生的部位也产生了大量的沉淀;当抽取K4[Fe(CN)6]溶液后再灌注CuSO4溶液,发现Cu^2+仍然可以穿过凯氏带,并在凯氏带外侧以及外皮层细胞的细胞壁处产生棕色沉淀。研究结果证明凯氏带并不是一个可以完全阻止离子进出的完美屏障。  相似文献

Two aspects of root to shoot communication in flooded plants are discussed (i) the formation of porous aerenchyma that enhances the passage of oxygen, and other gases, from shoots to roots and (ii) the movement of the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) from roots to shoots in the transpiration stream, and the effect of this on ethylene production and epinastic curvature in the shoots. For aerenchyma studies a highly sensitive photoacoustic laser detector for ethylene was used to avoid interference associated with other methods of ethylene measurement that require tissue excision. ACC concentrations in xylem sap were measured by physico-chemical means to ensure correct identification and account for processing losses. Solute concentrations, e.g., abscisic acid (ABA), in xylem sap are shown to be distorted by temporary contamination caused by the method used to collect sap. Concentrations of solutes in xylem sap (e.g., ACC) are also altered by changes in sap flow brought about by conventional methods of sap collection or by experimental treatments such as flooding the soil. Ways of for overcoming these problems are described together with a summary of preliminary results.  相似文献

氮(N)有效性增加对森林生态系统结构和功能有重要影响.细根作为树木地下最为活跃的组分,其对N有效性增加的响应已成为森林生态学研究的热点.本文对N有效性增加条件下细根解剖构造、形态和菌根侵染的响应趋势及潜在机制进行了综述.N有效性增加导致细根皮层厚度、皮层层数和皮层细胞直径下降,外皮层上通道细胞数量减少,而中柱和木质部横截面积,以及导管(或管胞)直径、数量和壁厚度均增加,根解剖构造的响应与植物激素浓度变化有关;N有效性增加后菌根侵染率下降,比根长(单位根干质量的长度)在外生菌根树种中普遍下降,而在内生菌根树种中增加;根直径和组织密度的变化趋势则表现出较大的种间差异.这些个体根和树种水平上的结果对于理解森林生态系统水平上的碳和养分循环具有重要意义.最后,根据目前研究中存在的不足提出了今后的研究方向与问题.  相似文献

Petrified Rhacophyton, Triloboxylon and Cladoxylon are described from the Givetian of eastern New York State. In cross section, specimens referable to Rhacophyton ceratangium have a mesarch primary xylem strand in the shape of a bar with swollen endS. Pycnoxylic secondary xylem surrounds the primary xylem. Vascular strands, interpreted as traces, are also present. Triloboxylon has a three-fluted primary xylem strand surrounded by secondary xylem. Several mesarch protoxylem areas are present in cross sectional view. The specimens of Cladoxylon , the first of this genus in the Middle Devonian of North America, show the typical polystelic pattern in cross section. Obvious secondary xylem and peripheral loops are absent. Lateral appendages were observed on two of the specimenS. A comparison of the Cairo and Gilboa floras indicates that they represent different ecological niches during the late Middle Devonian.  相似文献
