The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to determine whether untrained rats that refused to run on treadmill would climb on a laddermill (75 degrees incline); 2) to determine O2 consumption (VO2) in untrained rats as a function of laddermill climbing speed; and 3) to determine whether the circulatory response of untrained rats to laddermill climbing is similar to that previously reported for treadmill running at an equivalent VO2. Eighteen female Sprague-Dawley rats that would not perform on a treadmill as part of another study were used to measure VO2 as a function of laddermill speed (5-17 m/min). Data were obtained from all 18 rats; VO2 increased linearly as a function of laddermill speed (r = 0.83, y = 3.0 x + 63.2). Twenty-four female Sprague-Dawley rats that also refused to run on a treadmill were used to measure mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and blood flow distribution (with microspheres) during climbing at 5 and 10 m/min. These exercise intensities were metabolically equivalent to level treadmill running at 45 and 60 m/min (VO2 approximately 78 and 93 ml.min-1.kg-1, respectively). Of the 24 animals, 23 were willing to climb. Mean arterial pressures were higher (approximately 10%) during laddermill climbing than during equivalent treadmill running, but heart rates were the same. General blood flow distribution among muscles as a function of fiber type (with red muscles receiving higher flows) and between muscles and visceral tissues (muscle blood flow increased as a function of exercise intensity while visceral blood flows decreased) were similar to data for rats running on the level.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Fifty-five male runners aged between 30 to 80 years were examined to determine the relative roles of various cardiovascular parameters which may account for the decrease in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) with aging. All subjects had similar body fat composition and trained for a similar mileage each week. The parameters tested were VO2max, maximal heart rate (HRmax), cardiac output (Q), and arteriovenous difference in oxygen concentration (Ca-Cv)O2 during graded, maximal treadmill running. Average body fat and training mileage were roughly 12% and 50 km.week-1, respectively. The average 10-km run-time slowed significantly by 6.0%.decade-1 [( 10-km run-time (min) = 0.323 x age (years) + 24.4] (n = 49, r = 0.692, p less than 0.001]. A strong correlation was found between age and VO2max [( VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1) = -0.439 x age + 76.5] (n = 55, r = -0.768, p less than 0.001]. Thus, VO2max decreased by 6.9%.decade-1 along with reductions of HRmax (3.2%.decade-1, p less than 0.001) and Q (5.8%.decade-1, p less than 0.001), while no significant change with age was observed in estimated (Ca-Cv)O2. It was concluded that the decline of VO2max with aging in runners was mainly explained by the central factors (represented by the decline of HR and Q in this study), rather than by the peripheral factor (represented by (Ca-Cv)O2).  相似文献

Previous work with pregnant ewes has shown that acute bouts of exercise may cause changes in plasma hormone concentrations, blood flow distribution, and maternal and fetal temperatures. However, most of these studies do not quantify the chosen exercise intensity through measurement of oxygen consumption (VO2). Therefore the purpose of this study was to statistically model the VO2 response of pregnant sheep to treadmill (TM) exercise to determine the exercise intensities (% maximal VO2) of previous studies. Ewes with either single (n = 9) or twin (n = 5) fetuses were studied from 100 to 130 days of gestation. After 1-2 wk of TM habituation, maximal VO2 (VO2max) was determined by measurements of VO2 (open flow-through method) and blood lactate concentration. VO2 was measured as a function of TM incline (0, 3, 5, and 7 degree) and speed (0.8-3.4 m/s). VO2max averaged 57 +/- 7 (SD) ml.min-1.kg-1, and peak lactate concentration during exercise averaged 22 +/- 2 mmol/l. The relationship between VO2 (ml.min-1.kg-1) and incline (INC) and speed (SP) [VO2 = 0.70(INC) + 13.95(SP) + 1.07(INC x SP) - 1.18] was linear (r2 = 0.94). Our findings suggest that most previous research used exercise intensities less than 60% VO2max and indicate the need for further research that examines the effect of exercise during pregnancy at levels greater than 60% VO2max.  相似文献

To determine why black distance runners currently out-perform white distance runners in South Africa, we measured maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), maximum workload during a VO2max test (Lmax), ventilation threshold (VThr), running economy, inspiratory ventilation (VI), tidal volume (VT), breathing frequency (f) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) in sub-elite black and white runners matched for best standard 42.2 km marathon times. During maximal treadmill testing, the black runners achieved a significantly lower (P less than 0.05) Lmax (17 km h-1, 2% grade, vs 17 km h-1, 4% grade) and VI max (6.21 vs 6.82 l kg-2/3 min-1), which was the result of a lower VT (101 vs 119 ml kg-2/3 breath-1) as fmax was the same in both groups. The lower VT in the black runners was probably due to their smaller body size. The VThr occurred at a higher percentage VO2max in black than in white runners (82.7%, SD 7.7% vs 75.6%, SD 6.2% respectively) but there were no differences in the VO2max. However, during a 42.2-km marathon run on a treadmill, the black athletes ran at the higher percentage VO2max (76%, SD 7.9% vs 68%, SD 5.3%), RER (0.96, SD 0.07 vs 0.91, SD 0.04) and f (56 breaths min-1, SD 11 vs 47 breaths min-1, SD 10), and at lower VT (78 ml kg-2/3 breath-1, SD 15 vs 85 ml kg-2/3 breath-1, SD 19). Oxygen uptake-velocity regression equations were developed for floor and level treadmill walking by having two groups of men, aged 19-29 years (n = 20) and 55-66 years (n = 22), walk at four self-selected paces, from "rather slowly" to "as fast as possible". A two-variable quadratic model relating VO2 (ml X kg-1 X min-1) to velocity (m X s-1) was adopted for prediction purposes. However, age and fatness significantly (P less than 0.05) interacted with treadmill walking speed, while age alone significantly interacted with floor speed. In addition, a significant difference was found between the energy cost of floor and treadmill walking. For example at the normal walking speed of 1.33 m X s-1, the energy cost for the treadmill (age 55-66 years) was 10.58 ml X kg-1 X min-1 and for the floor, 11.04 ml X kg-1 X min-1 (P less than 0.05). Four quadratic equations are therefore presented, one each for floor and treadmill in each of the two age-groups. The percent variance explained was between 87 and 95% for each of these equations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship that age has on factors affecting running economy (RE) in competitive distance runners. Fifty-one male and female subelite distance runners (Young [Y]: 18-39 years [n = 18]; Master [M]: 40-59 years [n = 22]; and Older [O]: 60-older [n = 11]) were measured for RE, step rate, lactate threshold (LT), VO2max, muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, power, and body composition. An RE test was conducted at 4 different velocities (161, 188, 215, and 241 m·min(-1)), with subjects running for 5 minutes at each velocity. The steady-state VO2max during the last minute of each stage was recorded and plotted vs. speed, and a regression equation was formulated. A 1 × 3 analysis of variance revealed no differences in the slopes of the RE regression lines among age groups (y = 0.1827x - 0.2974; R2 = 0.9511 [Y]; y = 0.1988x - 1.0416; R2 = 0.9697 [M]; y = 0.1727x + 3.0252; R2 = 0.9618 [O]). The VO2max was significantly lower in the O group compared to in the Y and M groups (Y = 64.1 ± 3.2; M = 56.8 ± 2.7; O = 44.4 ± 1.7 mlO2·kg(-1)·min(-1)). The maximal heart rate and velocity @ LT were significantly different among all age groups (Y = 197 ± 4; M = 183 ± 2; O = 170 ± 6 b·min(-1) and Y = 289.7 ± 27.0; M = 251.5 ± 32.9; O = 212.3 ± 24.6 m·min(-1), respectively). The VO2max @ LT was significantly lower in the O group compared to in the Y and M groups (Y = 50.3 ± 2.0; M = 48.8 ± 2.9; O = 34.9 ± 3.2 mlO2·kg(-1)·min(-1)). The O group was significantly lower than in the Y and M groups in flexibility, power, and upper body strength. Multiple regression analyses showed that strength and power were significantly related to running velocity. The results from this cross-sectional analysis suggest that age-related declines in running performance are associated with declines in maximal and submaximal cardiorespiratory variables and declines in strength and power, not because of declines in running economy.  相似文献

Longitudinal alterations in anaerobic threshold (AT) and distance running performance were assessed three times within a 4-month period of intensive training, using 20 male, trained middle-distance runners (19-23 yr). A major effect of the high intensity regular intensive training together with 60- to 90-min AT level running training (2 d X wk-1) was a significant increase in the amount of O2 uptake corresponding to AT (VO2 AT; ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1) and in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max; ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1). Both VO2 AT and VO2max showed significant correlations (r = -0.69 to -0.92 and r = -0.60 to -0.85, respectively) with the 10,000 m run time in every test. However, further analyses of the data indicate that increasing VO2 AT (r = -0.63, P less than 0.05) rather than VO2max (r = -0.15) could result in improving the 10,000 m race performance to a larger extent, and that the absolute amount of change (delta) in the 10,000 m run time is best accounted for by a combination of delta VO2 AT and delta 5,000 m run time. Our data suggest that, among runners not previously trained over long distances, training-induced alterations in AT in response to regular intensive training together with AT level running training may contribute significantly to the enhancement of AT and endurance running performance, probably together with an increase in muscle respiratory capacity.  相似文献

We examined the hemodynamic factors associated with the lower maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) in older formerly elite distance runners. Heart rate and VO2 were measured during submaximal and maximal treadmill exercise in 11 master [66 +/- 8 (SD) yr] and 11 young (32 +/- 5 yr) male runners. Cardiac output was determined using acetylene rebreathing at 30, 50, 70, and 85% VO2max. Maximal cardiac output was estimated using submaximal stroke volume and maximal heart rate. VO2max was 36% lower in master runners (45.0 +/- 6.9 vs. 70.4 +/- 8.0 ml.kg-1.min-1, P less than or equal to 0.05), because of both a lower maximal cardiac output (18.2 +/- 3.5 vs. 25.4 +/- 1.7 l.min-1) and arteriovenous O2 difference (16.6 +/- 1.6 vs. 18.7 +/- 1.4 ml O2.100 ml blood-1, P less than or equal to 0.05). Reduced maximal heart rate (154.4 +/- 17.4 vs. 185 +/- 5.8 beats.min-1) and stroke volume (117.1 +/- 16.1 vs. 137.2 +/- 8.7 ml.beat-1) contributed to the lower cardiac output in the older athletes (P less than or equal 0.05). These data indicate that VO2max is lower in master runners because of a diminished capacity to deliver and extract O2 during exercise.  相似文献

These experiments were designed to study skeletal muscle pathology resulting from eccentric-biased exercise in rats. The effects on the muscles of running on a treadmill on a 0 degrees incline (similar amounts of concentric and eccentric contractions), down a 16 degrees incline (primarily eccentric contractions), and up a 16 degrees incline (primarily concentric contractions) at 16 m . min-1 for 90 min were assessed by following postexercise changes in 1) plasma creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities, 2) glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDase) activity (bio- and histochemically) in the physiological extensor muscles, and 3) histological appearance of the muscles. The data indicate the following. 1) Whereas all exercise protocols resulted in elevations of plasma enzymes immediately after running, only eccentric exercise caused late phase elevations 1.5-2 days postexercise. 2) Significant increases in muscle G-6-PDase activity, which were always associated with accumulations of mononuclear cells, always occurred within some muscles of each extensor group 1-3 days following downhill and uphill running and did not occur following level running; the increases in activity were usually of lower magnitude in the muscles of uphill runners than in those of downhill runners; the deeply located, predominantly slow-twitch muscles were most affected by both down- and uphill running. 3) Muscle histology demonstrated localized disruption of normal banding patterns of some fibers immediately after exercise and accumulations of macrophages in the interstitium and in some (less than 5%) muscle fibers by 24 h postexercise in the deep slow muscles of the antigravity groups. Although the data generally indicated that eccentric exercise causes greater injury to the muscles, questions remain.  相似文献

This study quantified the interaction of electromyography (EMG) obtained from the vastus lateralis and metabolic energy cost of running (C(r); mL·[mass+load](-1)·meter(-1)), an index of running economy, during submaximal treadmill running. Experiments were conducted with and without load on the back on a motor-driven treadmill on the downhill, level and uphill slopes. The obtained EMG was full-wave rectified and integrated (iEMG). The iEMG was divided into eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) phases with a foot sensor and a knee-joint goniometer. The ratio of ECC to CON (ECC/CON ratio) was regarded as the muscle elastic capacity during running on each slope. The C(r) was determined as the ratio of the 2-min steady-state VO(2) to the running speed. We found a significant decrease in the C(r) when carrying the load at all slopes. The ECC/CON ratio was significantly higher in the load condition at the downhill and level slopes, but not at the uphill slope. A significant gradient difference was observed in the C(r) (downuphill). Thus, an alteration of Cr by the gradient and load was almost consistent with that of the ECC/CON ratio. The ECC/CON ratio, but not the rotative torque (T) functioning around the center of body mass, significantly correlated with C(r) (r=-0.41, p<0.05). These results indicated that the ECC/CON ratio, rather than T, contributed to one of the energy-saving mechanisms during running with load.  相似文献

The evaluation of performance through the application of adequate physical tests during a sportive season may be a useful tool to evaluate training adaptations and determine training intensities. For runners, treadmill incremental VO(2)max tests with gas exchange analysis have been widely used to determine maximal and submaximal parameters such as the ventilatory threshold (VT) and respiratory compensation point (RCP) running speed. However, these tests often differ in methodological characteristics (e.g., stage duration, grade, and speed increment size), and few studies have examined the reproducibility of their protocol. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify the reproducibility and determine the running speeds related to maximal and submaximal parameters of a specific incremental maximum effort treadmill protocol for amateur runners. Eleven amateur male runners underwent 4 repetitions of the protocol (25-second stages, each increasing by 0.3 km·h in running speed while the treadmill grade remained fixed at 1%) after 3 minutes of warm-up at 8-8.5 km·h. We found no significant differences in any of the analyzed parameters, including VT, RCP, and VO(2)max during the 4 repetitions (p > 0.05). Further, the results related to running speed showed high within-subject reproducibility (coefficient of variation < 5.2%). The typical error (TE) values for running speed related to VT (TE = 0.62 km·h), RCP (TE = 0.35 km·h), and VO(2)max (TE = 0.43 km·h) indicated high sensitivity and reproducibility of this protocol. We conclude that this VO(2)max protocol facilitates a clear determination of the running speeds related to VT, RCP, and VO(2)max and has the potential to enable the evaluation of small training effects on maximal and submaximal parameters.  相似文献

This investigation examines the effects of vertical and horizontal loading on the O2 intake (VO2) response of children (n = 8) and adults (n = 8) to treadmill running. In unloaded running, the children required a significantly greater VO2 (P less than 0.001) than the adults [mean difference 7 ml.kg-1.min-1 (18.5%)]. There was no significant difference in the VO2 response of the children and the adults to either vertical or horizontal loading. Vertical loading with 5 and 10% of body mass did not produce a significant increase in the VO2 response of either group. In contrast, horizontal loading produced a significant increase (P less than 0.001) in both groups. The consistent response to the two forms of loading suggests that there is no difference between children and adults in the apparent efficiency of running with an external load. Stride frequency showed a significant increase with vertical loading (P less than 0.001) and a significant decrease with horizontal loading (P less than 0.001) in both groups.  相似文献

The current investigation was designed to determine which factor or what combination of factors would best account for distance running performance in middle-aged and elderly runners (mean age 57.5 years SD +/- 9.7) with heterogeneous training habits. Among 35 independent variables which were arbitrarily selected as possible prerequisites in the distance running performance of these runners, oxygen uptake (VO2) at lactate threshold (LT) (r = 0.781-0.889), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) (r = 0.751 approximately 0.886), and chronological age (r = -0.736-(-)0.886) were found to be the 3 predictor variables showing the highest correlations with the mean running velocity at 5 km (V5km), 10 km (V10km), and marathon (VM). When all independent variables were used in a multiple regression analysis, any 3 or 4 variables selected from among VO2 at LT, chronological age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), atherogenic index (AI), and Katsura index (KI) were found to give the best explanation of V5km, V10km, or VM in a combined linear model. Linear multiple regression equations constructed for predicting the running performances were: V5km = 0.046X1-0.026X2-0.0056X3+5.17, V10km = 0.028X1-0.028X2-0.190X4-1.34X5+6.45, and VM = -0.0400X2-0.324X4-1.16X5+7.36, where X1 = VO2 at LT (ml.min-1.kg-1), X2 = chronological age, X3 = SBP, X4 = AI, and X5 = KI.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We investigated which attribute or what combination of attributes would best account for distance running performance of female runners. The subjects were 30 well-trained female distance runners, aged 19 to 23 years. Anthropometric and body composition characteristics, pulmonary function characteristics, blood properties, and cardiorespiratory function characteristics were measured at rest or during submaximal and maximal exercise. Analyses of the data showed that the relationship of oxygen uptake corresponding to lactate threshold (VO2T, ml.kg-1.min-1) with each distance running performance was substantially higher as compared with the relationship of other independent variables including maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis indicated that running performances in 3,000m, 5,000m, and 10,000m are best accounted for by a combination of VO2/LT (X1), fat-free weight (X2), and/or mean corpuscular volume (X3). A multiple regression equation for predicting the 5,000m (Y, s) running performance was formulated as Y = -14.75X1-3. 03X2-5.79X3 + 2282.1. We suggest that VO2max would not stand alone as a decisive factor of distance running success in female runners, and that the distance running performance could be better accounted for by a combination of several attributes relating to lactate threshold, body composition, and/or hematological status. Maximal exercise responses were measured before and after 10 weeks of training in two groups of men, one trained on a treadmill (n = 12) and the other on a step ergometer (n = 9); the groups were pre- and post-tested on both machines to examine the specificity of the training modes. Training for both groups consisted of 3 days week-1, 30 min day-1, progressing to 50 min day-1, at an intensity of 75%-80% heart rate maximum reserve. Pre-training maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was significantly higher on the treadmill for both groups (X = 8.5%). VO2max increased 6.9% on the treadmill (P less than 0.05) and 6.9% (P greater than 0.05) on the step ergometer after treadmill training. The small increases may be attributed to the specificity of the testing protocols used to elicit VO2max. Significant (P less than 0.01) increases in VO2max were found for both modalities after step-ergometry training (treadmill = 11.8%; step ergometer = 23.2%). These increases resulted in equal post-test VO2max values (4.05 l min-1; 51 ml kg-1 min-1) on the step ergometer and treadmill. The significant increases in VO2max found for both modalities after step-ergometry training shows that (1) step ergometry is an effective training modality, and (2) its effects can be measured on the treadmill and therefore it is not task-specific training.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine whether traditional ergoespirometric incremental exercise testing carried out to the point of exhaustion could be useful in distinguishing the physiological profiles of elite runners that compete in races that lasted about 8 minutes versus those that lasted about 2 hours. Ten male marathon runners (performance time: 2:12:04, coefficient of variation (CV) = 2.33%) and 8 male 3000 m steeplechase runners (performance time: 8:37.83, CV = 2.12%) performed an incremental test on the treadmill (starting speed 10 km·h-1; increments, 2 km·h-1; increment duration, 3 min to exhaustion). Heart rate (HR), VO2, and lactate concentrations were measured at the end of each exercise level. At maximal effort, there were no differences between the groups regarding VO2max and maximal HR; however, the workload time, vVO2max and peak treadmill velocity were significantly higher in the 3000 m steeplechase group (p<0.05). At submaximal effort, there were no significant differences between groups for VO2 (ml·kg-1·min-1), HR, or lactate. Our results show that this type of testing was not sufficient for discriminating the physiological profiles of elite runners who competed in middle-distance versus long-distance events (e.g. in the marathon and the 3000 m steeplechase).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to verify the influence of the combination of different running speeds and slopes based on main kinematic parameters in both groups of elite (RE) and amateur (RA) marathon runners. All subjects performed various tests on a treadmill at 0, 2, and 7% slopes at different speeds: 3.89, 4.17, 4.44, 4.72, and 5.00 m·s. A high speed digital camera, 210 Hz, has been used to record; Dartfish 5.5Pro has been used to perform a 2D video analysis. Step length (SL), step frequency (SF), flight time (FT), and contact time (CT) were determined and used for comparison. SL, SF, and FT parameters increased, and CT parameter decreased as speed increased. As slopes increased, SL and FT decreased and SF increased in both groups and only CT decreased in RE, whereas in RA, it increased. Data were fitted to the linear regression line (R > 0.95). The 2 groups were significantly different (p < 0.05) in FT, SL, and SF at all speeds in level running. A significant difference between the 2 groups was found in FT at 2 and 7% slopes at all speeds (p < 0.05). Percentage alterations in all variables were greater in the RA group. In conclusion, the choice of optimum SL and SF, through efficient running can be maintained, is influenced not only by speed but also by slopes. Elite runners perform more efficiently than amateur runners who have less experience.  相似文献

Sixteen men were tested to determine VO2max (ml X kg-1 X min-1), anaerobic threshold VO2 (ATVO2) and oxygen kinetics (time constant, T.C.) during running on a treadmill. For measuring maximal calf blood flow (maxBF, ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1), venous occlusion plethysmography was employed immediately following a combination of arterial occlusion and toe raising exercise to exhaustion. In addition, supramaximal electrical stimulations were given to determine maximal calf twitch force (Fmax, N), maximal rate of twitch force development (dF/dt) and relaxation (R X dF/dt, N X ms-1) and electro-mechanical delay time (EMD, ms). Results demonstrated that VO2max, ATVO2 and maxBF were all inversely related to T.C. (p less than 0.05). MaxBF and ATVO2 showed the highest correlation (r = 0.89, p less than 0.01). Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses revealed that variance in VO2max (60%) and ATVO2 (84%) could be accounted for by the combined effects of the following peripheral factors: VO2max = 51,25-3.24(dF/dt) + 0.14(maxBF), and ATVO2 = 11.68 + 0.42(maxBF) - 0.2(Fmax). These findings, together with the results of cluster analysis, suggest a tight link between ATVO2 and peripheral blood flow capacity. On the other hand, a moderate correlation (r = 0.64, p less than 0.01) between VO2max and maxBF might be due in part to individual differences in oxygen extraction-utilization capacity during heavy exercise above anaerobic threshold.  相似文献

Many well-trained elite older runners have performances comparable to those of much younger nonelite runners. We sought to determine whether the physiological determinants of endurance performance in two groups of such athletes were the same. Eight master athletes (age 56 +/- 5 yr) were matched on the basis of 10-km performance and training to younger runners (age 25 +/- 3 yr). The master athletes had a 9% lower maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) (P less than 0.05) than the matched young runners, despite the similarity in their performance. Running economy was not different between these groups. However, the master athletes attained a 2.5-mM blood lactate level during steady-state exercise at a higher percentage of their VO2max (P less than 0.05), although both groups attained this lactate level at the same running speed and VO2. Thus, despite having significantly lower VO2max values, the older athletes were able to perform as well as the younger runners because they were able to work closer to their VO2max for the duration of the race.  相似文献
