Ten Artioposthia triangulata were kept without food at 5°C, 10°C, 15°C, 20°C and 23°C. Survival and weights were recorded weekly. All planarians died within one week at 23°C and within three weeks at 20°C. One individual survived for 60 wk at 5°C. A negative exponential equation was fitted to average survival times for planarians kept at 5°C, 10°C, 15°C and 20°C. Negative exponential models could also describe the pattern of degrowth by planarians deprived of food. The results are discussed in relation to possible survival of the planarian outdoors in Northern Ireland and the implications for earthworm populations.  相似文献

Observations had linked the disappearance of earthworms from a grass field to the presence of Artioposthia triangulata. An experiment demonstrated that this land planarian could severely and quickly reduce numbers of four earthworm species. Two different approaches to sampling A. triangulata were investigated on a grassland site. The first used four different trap types (wood, ceramic tile, 'corriboard' plastic and 5 mm polystyrene beneath a ceramic tile) measuring 15 cm x 15 cm which were compared over a period of 18 wk. The second used one, or two, applications of dilute formalin solution to quadrats followed by counting the residual planarians by hand-sorting the soil beneath the quadrat to a depth of 30 cm. The polystyrene traps were the most effective for detecting the presence of A. triangulata. No planarians were ever found by hand-sorting after two formalin applications and it was concluded that formalin sampling provided a good estimate of the population density. Counts under traps were not related to absolute estimates of population densities so polystyrene type traps should only be used for detection of the planarians. A multiple regression relationship of A. triangulata weight over time in 5% formalin is presented and allows the original liveweight to be calculated from the weight in preservative. Planarian and earthworm population densities in eight fields were sampled and the planarians were found to be randomly distributed. Counts of planarians in 0.25 m2 quadrats were not related to numbers of earthworms but overall field population densities were. It is concluded that A. triangulata is a severe threat to the earthworm populations of Northern Ireland.  相似文献

Abstract

Artioposthia triangulata was originally described from New Zealand in 1895 but was subsequently found to have spread to Northern Ireland in 1963 and Scotland and England in 1965. It is now widespread in both Ireland and Scotland, where it has been shown to reduce earthworm numbers to below detectable levels. Ecoclimatic data were used in the computer program CLIMEX to estimate the potential spread of A. triangulata to Europe and the rest of the world. Results indicated it could establish in agricultural land in most of north‐western Europe, and persist in domestic gardens throughout much of central Europe, east and west North America, Australia, southern South America, and South Africa. It is difficult to assess either the extent to which earthworm numbers and diversity would be decreased or how far the effect of their loss to soil structure, nutrient cycling, or wildlife would be detrimental in these areas.  相似文献

The distribution of the New Zealand flatworm (Artioposthia triangulata) in Scotland was surveyed between July 1991 and February 1993. There were 348 records from domestic gardens, 56 from botanic gardens, garden centres and nurseries, with only 13 from farms. Although most of the records came from around the major cities the flatworm was found to have become established throughout the Scottish mainland and some of the Islands, e.g. Bute, Gigha, Orkney and Skye. The impact of the flatworm on earthworm populations in agricultural land in Scotland was, as yet, found to be minimal but the fact that seven adjacent farms near Dunoon were infected suggested it could be spread from farm to farm and that in the West of Scotland it could become widespread in agricultural land.  相似文献

The epidermis of the land planarian Arthioposthia triangulatawas examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Thisinvestigation revealed that the flatworm was covered entirely withcilia and was especially densely populated on the ventral surface.In all regions the epidermis consisted of a one-layered columnarepithelium resting on a prominent basement membrane, but lacking aterminal web. Various secretions were found in the epidermistogether with epidermal rhabdoids. Below the basement membraneother secretory material was visible and this included thecytoplasmic lamellated granules and adenal rhabdites. The basementmembrane consisted of fibrils with a beaded appearance and thesewere arranged parallel to the epidermal layer but did not displaycross-banding. The secretory cells above and below the basementmembrane were compared and their products characterized on thebasis of shape, size and location. Their possible function isdiscussed.  相似文献

The present study revealed the role of earthworm in converting tannery sludge into a valuable product. Tannery sludge was toxic to earthworm, therefore it was mixed with cattle dung in different proportions viz. 0:100 (T0), 10:90 (T10), 25:75 (T25), 50:50 (T50) and 75:25 (T75) on dry weight basis. The minimum mortality and highest population buildup of worms was in T0 mixture. Nitrogen, sodium, phosphorus and pH increased from initial in the range of 7.3-66.6%, 16.90-70.58%, 8.57-44.8% and 2.8-13.65%, respectively. On the other hand potassium, organic carbon and electrical conductivity decreased in the range of 4.34-28.5%, 7.54-22.35% and 32.35-53.12%, respectively. C:N ratio decreased from 20.53% to 47.36% in the final products. Transition metals increased significantly from the initial value and within the permissible limit. The result indicated that vermicomposting with Eisenia fetida is better for changing this sludge into nutrient rich manure in a short period of time.  相似文献

Genetic variation in 12 populations of the terrestrial planarian Artioposthia triangulata from Northern Ireland and one in the Republic of Ireland were assessed using starch-gel electrophoresis. Seven enzymes - adenylate kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, enolase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucose isomerase, phosphomannose isomerase and superoxide dismutase - provided consistent, resolved stains. Coefficients of genetic identity were similar for all comparisons suggesting that the populations did not belong to distinct taxa. There was no relationship between genetic distance and geographic distance for populations, thus confirming the role of passive dispersal in the spread of A. triangulata. Average percentage polymorphic loci and mean heterozygosities were higher in the east of the Province (41.4% and 0.240), than the west (37.5% and 0.185) suggesting that the planarian had spread westwards after an initial colonisation in the east.  相似文献

Traditionally used methods for collecting and preserving terrestrial flatworms have proved deficient in various respects. Comparison of methods for preparing these animals for taxonomic study has shown that preservation of morphological characters can best be achieved using formaldehyde-calcium-cobalt fixative and subsequent storage in an aqueous solution of propylene phenoxetol plus propylene glycol and that the best-lasting histological preparations make use of light-fast, oxidation-resistant dyes and synthetic mounting media with an anti-oxidant.  相似文献

Knowledge of the cosmopolitan land planarian Bipalium kewense is briefly reviewed. A neotype and paraneotypes are designated. External morphology and internal anatomy of the species are redescribed. Karyological studies on B. kewense reveal a diploid chromosome complement of 16; one subtelocentric, three submetacentric and four metacentric chromosome pairs. Taxonomy of B. kewense is revised and full synonomy provided. New synonomies include Placocephalus isabellinus Geba and Bipalium costaricensis Hyman. Species that phenetically resemble B. kewense are divided into three groups primarily on the basis of stripe pattern and cutaneous musculature. A differential diagnosis distinguishing B. kewense from taxa in these groups is provided. Present distribution of the species is mapped. New records are reported from Barbados, Colombia, Costa-Rica, El Salvador, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Tahiti, Taiwan and Zimbabwe. Worldwide B. kewense exhibits a disjunct distribution pattern. In Australia and in the United States a similar pattern of occurrence is evident. The species appears to be dispersed with rooted plants. The natural range of B. kewense extends from Vietnam to Kampuchea, possibly extending to Malaysia. Elsewhere it has been introduced by man. The bipaliid fauna of Vietnam, to which B. kewense belongs, appears to have closer phenetic affinities with the faunas of adjacent southern rather than northern regions.  相似文献

In many species of simultaneous hermaphrodites, body size correlates with fecundity, and larger partners are preferred to small ones. Since sperm exchange is usually reciprocal, small individuals may be rejected by larger partners resulting in size-assortative mating. We studied the mating patterns in a natural population of the simultaneous hermaphroditic earthworm Eisenia fetida (Oligochaeta, Lumbricidae). We found that size-assortative mating processes existed, with variance in body weight within pairs lower than between pairs in mating earthworms. This non-random mating pattern probably reveals the existence of mate selection in this species, which lives at elevated densities with high availability of potential mates.  相似文献

A new species of land planarian is described from Kenya. Microplana rermirophaga sp. nov. preys on termites by capturing them at the openings to their nest. The pharynx is unusually far forwards for a land planarian and this is probably related to the active nature of the prey. There is an anterior depression caused by the termination of parenchymal longitudinal muscle bundles which might act as a sucker. All specimens are immature which leads to some difficulty in assigning the species to a genus.  相似文献

Preliminary analysis was made of 76 species in the monotypic family Bipaliidae, for which the copulatory apparatus has been described. Four characters from the copulatory organs were selected: profile of the female organ (three character states), approachment of the ovovitelline ducts to the female organ (two states), shape of the penial papilla (two states), and shape of the male antrum wall (three states). Data were scored for five preliminary ingroup taxa, viz., the restricted genus Placocephalus, and four other a priori defined subgroups within the family, viz., the genus Bipalium sensu stricto and three other informal taxonomic groupings. An artificial outgroup taxon was constructed on the basis of character states generalized from the Geoplanidae subfamilies Caenoplaninae, Pelmatoplaninae and Rhynchodemidae subfamily Microplaninae. Analysis of the data matrix resulted in a single most parsimonious tree with the following topology: (outgroup (Placocephalus (Bipalium, group A (group B1, group B2)))). In order to assess the response of epigeic earthworms to seasonal changes we monitored the population dynamics of Eisenia fetida (Oligochaeta, Lumbricidae) in a manure heap in the field during a year. Earthworms were hand-sorted from five 0.25 x 0.25 x 0.20 m blocks around the heap in November (autumn) 1999 and in January (winter), April (spring) and August (summer) 2000 to determine earthworm population dynamics. Earthworms of each block were classified into different age classes: mature, preclitellate, juvenile, hatchling and cocoon, and afterwards counted and weighed. Seasonality had a strong effect on the density, biomass and reproductive activity of the population. The population of E. fetida was characterized by a high density of individuals and the predominance of mature individuals throughout the year. Maximum density, mating activity and size of cocoons were achieved in spring, but there were not changes in the number of cocoons per mature earthworm throughout the year. Unexpectedly, the smallest cocoons were produced in winter by the largest individuals. These results suggest that E. fetida is able to allocate resources to growth and/or reproduction in response to environmental fluctuations.  相似文献

Eisenia fetida were exposed continuously to (60)Co gamma radiation during two generations (F(0) and F(1)). Adult F(0) reproduction capacity (i.e., number of cocoons produced, hatchability and number of F(1) hatchlings) in controls and at five dose rates (0.18, 1.7, 4, 11 and 43 mGy/h) was measured over a 13-week exposure period. Survival, growth and sexual maturation of F(1) hatchlings were observed for 11 weeks. F(1) adults were exposed for a further 13 weeks to determine their reproduction capacity. There was no radiation-induced effect on the cocoon production rate in either F(0) or F(1). For F(0), hatchability of cocoons produced during the first 4 weeks was reduced to 60% at 43 mGy/h (98% in controls), and none of the cocoons produced at 5-13 weeks hatched. At 11 mGy/h the cocoon hatchability was reduced to 25% at 9-13 weeks. In addition, the number of hatchlings per hatched cocoon was reduced at 11 and 43 mGy/h. Correspondingly, at these dose rates, the total number of F(1) hatchlings per adult F(0) was significantly lower than in the control. This number was also reduced at 4 mGy/h, but the effect was of borderline significance. For adult F(1), the hatchability of cocoons at 11 mGy/h was reduced to 45-69% during the 13-week exposure period. The number of hatchlings (F(2)) per cocoon and the total number of F(2) individuals produced was also reduced. However, and in contrast to the results observed for F(0), hatchability increased with time, suggesting a possible acclimatization or adaptation of the F(1) individuals. In conclusion, chronic irradiation reduced the reproduction capacity of E. fetida, but extensive exposure periods (13 weeks) were needed for these effects to be expressed. The lowest dose rates at which an effect was observed were 4 mGy/h in F(0) and 11 mGy/h in F(1).  相似文献

研究了不同阿维菌素B1a浓度对种土壤微生物生长和呼吸强度的影响及对土壤中蚯蚓的急性毒性.结果表明,土壤中阿维菌素B1a浓度在83.3 mg·kg-1以上时对种土壤细菌均表现出明显的抑制作用,但对土壤真菌不表现抑制作用.高浓度阿维菌素B1a对土壤微生物的呼吸强度有抑制作用,并且在不同土壤其作用有差异.采用滤纸接触试验和人工土壤试验测定阿维菌素对蚯蚓的急性毒性(半数致死量,LD50),接触毒性LD50为.63μg·cm-2,土壤法试验测定的LD50在处理后第7 d和第1 d分别为2.13和17.06 mg·kg-1.  相似文献

Polycladus gayi is a colourful and easily recognizable land planarian native to the temperate to cold rainforests of the west coast of southern South America, in Chile and Argentina; however, its ecology is poorly understood. Here, we describe the first records of P. gayi preying on a black snail Macrocyclis peruvianus in the wild. Two events were recorded, the first in a healthy forest in Llancahue Alto, Panguipulli, Chile, during the austral summer of 2023, and the second in a mature evergreen forest in the coastal range of La Union, Chile. These records expand our knowledge of the feeding habits and behaviour of P. gayi and add M. peruvianus to its prey list.  相似文献

Diverticula are present in the copulatory organs of many species of the Terricola. In some species these structures are copulatory bursae or resorptive vesicles. The function of diverticula present in the copulatory organs in species of Dolichoplana and Platydemus (Rhynchodemidae), in Australoplana (Geoplanidae) and in some other caenoplaninid genera has been an enigma. From histochemical and other investigations of the ventro-posterior copulatory diverticulum in Platydemus manokwari de Beauchamp, it is evident that this structure is neither a copulatory bursa, resorptive vesicle nor a uterus. It is an adhesive gland producing a viscid, collagen-like fibrous glycoprotein derived from two secretory elements present in the gland. The secretion is expelled during cocoon laying to adhere the cocoon onto the substratum. The diverticulum appears late in the development of the copulatory organs, and is present when the gonopore is patent; this has implications for the taxonomy of platydemid flatworms. 通过人工污染土壤的方法,设计芘的暴露浓度为0、60、120、240、480、960μg.kg-1.暴露实验进行1、3、7和14d后,分别检测蚯蚓内脏中细胞色素P450含量、谷胱甘肽转移酶(GST)、超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化物酶(POD)、过氧化氢酶(CAT)活性和丙二醛(MDA)含量.结果表明,在供试浓度范围内,蚯蚓内脏中各生化指标对污染物暴露指示的敏感性存在差异:其中P450含量、GST和SOD活性最为敏感;POD和CAT活性次之;而MDA含量未对低剂量的芘暴露起到明显的指示作用.研究同时发现,低剂量污染物暴露的时间效应要强于剂量效应的影响.因而,在进行生态毒性诊断时,采用多指标和多时段的检测对增强指示的灵敏性和有效性尤为重要.  相似文献

The cytochemical and functional characteristics of chloragocytes of both 'control' and cold-stressed Eisenia fetida were examined. Flow cytometry revealed the heterogeneity of chloragocytes: the first group was characterized by low, the second one by high acid phosphatase (AcP) content. In 'control' animals the former, in cold-stressed ones the latter type were the dominant form. The elevated AcP-activity correlated with the accumulation of autophagic vacuoles (AVs) in chloragocytes. Both AVs and all small chloragosomes showed high AcP activity, while most of the large chloragosomes did not display any. Most 'control' granules (0.75-1.25 μm) contained high amounts of Ca and P, with less and variable quantities of S, Cl, K, Fe and Zn. Small chloragosomes with low Ca and P concentrations were seldom found. In cold-stressed animals the number of small granules (0.25-0.75 μm) increased up to 40% of total population. Their Ca and P contents were significantly lower; S and Fe concentrations were higher than those of large chloragosomes (1.0-1.5 μm). Our results prove that the formation and elemental composition of chloragosomes can be influenced by environmental stressors and suggest that the mature chloragosomes are tertiary lysosomes and their formation is coupled to autophagocytosis.  相似文献
