The objective of this study was to evaluate growth along the stem of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze trees competing in overstocked stands, in order to identify periods when growth and trunk shape are differentiated during the trees' lifespan. The research was carried out in a planted forest of Araucaria angustifolia established in 1946 in the Açungui National Forest in Campo Largo, Paraná, Brazil, when these trees were 65 years old. One thinning was recorded, at some time between 1970 and 1980. Forty-six trees were selected and divided into three development classes (DC) at 65 years of age; these classes considered diameter at 1.30 m (breast height, dbh) with a range of 20 cm (from 10 cm to 70 cm). In addition to dbh, total tree height, and crown height and diameter were measured in the field. From each tree, 14 disks were removed to analyze growth rings and confirm the age of the stand. Some trees in the smallest DC (10 ≤ dbh < 30 cm) were the product of natural regeneration (younger trees that grew after the initial planting). In 63% of the trees, at least one growth ring was missing at breast height. Missing rings at breast height were more common in trees with smaller dbh and crown diameters. The need for more growing space was observed at different periods during the studied lifespan of the trees from three DCs. It resulted in changes in stems shape from conical to cylindrical. Different growth patterns could be observed during the lives of some trees as they outgrew their competition.  相似文献

Studies of a variety of phenomena, ranging from rates of molecular substitution to rates of diversification, draw on estimates of geological age. Studies incorporating estimates of timing from fossils or other geological evidence are largely of relatively young, Tertiary divergences, to which older systems may provide useful comparisons. One apparently old assemblage comprises the beetle groups associated with the ancient genus Araucaria that share comparable, ostensibly Gondwanan distributions with their host. Our previous studies suggested a possibly Cretaceous age for Araucaria associations in bark beetles. However, the absence of confirmed bark beetle fossils earlier than the Tertiary has been taken as evidence of Cretaceous absence, and their confirmed phylogenetic position within the primitively angiosperm-feeding weevil family rules out pre-angiosperm, Jurassic origins. Nevertheless, an early shift from angiosperms to Araucaria seemed plausible in the light of Araucaria fossil history which spans the Mesozoic since the Jurassic. To resolve the phylogenetic affinities and to estimate divergence times of the Australian and South American bark beetle genera affiliated with Araucaria we analysed DNA sequences of nuclear and mitochondrial genes: protein coding elongation factor alpha, enolase and cytochrome oxidase I. The most parsimonious reconstruction of the host relationships of Tomicini from the combined dataset corroborates the ancestral association with the genus Araucaria of both South American and Australian Tomicini. Bayesian estimation of divergence times indicates that the divergence between the Australian and the South American Araucaria-feeding taxa occurred at the very latest in the Cretaceous/Paleocene border and that the age of the first Scolytinae-Araucarsa association would then be during the later stages of the Late Cretaceous, while other known beetle/Araucaria associations are Jurassic.  相似文献

Obtaining accurate phylogenies and effective species discrimination using a small standardized set of plastid genes is challenging in evolutionarily young lineages. Complete plastid genome sequencing offers an increasingly easy‐to‐access source of characters that helps address this. The usefulness of this approach, however, depends on the extent to which plastid haplotypes track morphological species boundaries. We have tested the power of complete plastid genomes to discriminate among multiple accessions of 11 of 13 New Caledonian Araucaria species, an evolutionarily young lineage where the standard DNA barcoding approach has so far failed and phylogenetic relationships have remained elusive. Additionally, 11 nuclear gene regions were Sanger sequenced for all accessions to ascertain the success of species discrimination using a moderate number of nuclear genes. Overall, fewer than half of the New Caledonian Araucaria species with multiple accessions were monophyletic in the plastid or nuclear trees. However, the plastid data retrieved a phylogeny with a higher resolution compared to any previously published tree of this clade and supported the monophyly of about twice as many species and nodes compared to the nuclear data set. Modest gains in discrimination thus are possible, but using complete plastid genomes or a small number of nuclear genes in DNA barcoding may not substantially raise species discriminatory power in many evolutionarily young lineages. The big challenge therefore remains to develop techniques that allow routine access to large numbers of nuclear markers scaleable to thousands of individuals from phylogenetically disparate sample sets.  相似文献

Araucaria angustifolia is a dioecious dominant tree in araucaria forests in Brazil and Argentina, South America. The species is nowadays critically endangered by deforestation and global climate change. The goal of this study was to analyse the dynamics of radial growth in this species and its association with climatic variables, according to the sex, at its western range boundary in Argentina. Standard dendrochronological techniques were applied on stem disks from female and male trees. Xylem anatomical anomalies made the tree-ring dating process difficult. Female and male trees showed growth patterns that changed over time, not being significant in the 1950–1990 period and highly significant from the 1990s onwards (p < 0.1) when female trees had a higher growth rate. Female and male trees showed a different association with climatic variables. No significant effect of temperature and precipitation was identified on female trees. For male trees, rainfall had a positive effect in August, before the growing season, and a negative effect at the end of the growing season (March). Temperature had a negative effect on male trees, before and during the growing season (February and January, respectively). No effect of SOI was detected on both sexes. Results emphasised the usefulness of A. angustifolia for dendrochronological studies and the value of dioecious species for the study of sex-related growth–climate association.  相似文献

The objectives of the present work were in vitro propagation of Araucaria excelsa R. Br. var. glauca Carrière (Norfolk Island pine) with focus on the evaluation of the mean number of shoots per explant (MNS/E) and mean length of shoots per explants (MLS/E) produced by different parts of the orthotropic stem of A. excelsa R. Br. var. glauca in response to plant growth regulators. Norfolk Island pine axillary meristems responded very well to the 2-iso-pentenyl adenine (2iP) and thidiazuron (TDZ) levels. Explants taken from stem upper segments in the media containing 2iP had a higher MNS/E (3.47) and MLS/E (6.27 mm) in comparison to those taken from stem lower segments, which were 0.71 and 0.51 mm, respectively. Using 0.045 μM TDZ in the MS medium not only resulted in 4.60 MNS/E with 7.08 mm MLS/E but proliferated shoots showed a good performance as well. Investigating the best position of stem explant on mother plant as well as the best concentrations of growth regulators were performed which were useful for efficient micropropagation of this plant. Thirty three percent of explants were rooted in the MS medium containing 3 % sucrose, supplemented with 7.5 μM of both NAA and IBA for 2 weeks before transferring to a half strength MS medium without any growth regulator. Plantlets obtained were acclimatized and transferred to the greenhouse with less than 20 % mortality. This procedure considered the first successful report for regeneration and acclimatization of A. excelsa R. Br. var. glauca plantlet through main stem explants.  相似文献

Calvertius tuberosus (Curculionidae) lives exclusively on Araucaria araucana trees (commonly known as pehuen) in southern Chile. In this study, morphometric and molecular genetic analyses of Andean and coastal populations of C. tuberosus were performed to evaluate evolutionary divergence associated with the discontinuity of the Araucaria forest between the coastal and Andean regions. Specimens of C. tuberosus were collected in Nahuelbuta National Park, Villa Las Araucarias, and Malalcahuello National Reserve and were classified and stored at the Animal Biotechnology Researching Laboratory (LINBA), University of La Frontera, Temuco, Chile. Thirteen morphometric parameters and the expression patterns of ISSR (inter-simple sequence repeat) markers were analyzed. Morphometric data revealed high phenotypic similarity between coastal populations. The genetic analysis revealed a high similarity between coastal populations (genetic identity, 93%), which were differentiated from the Andean population (genetic identity, 84%). This study contributes new genotypic and phenotypic data for the C. tuberosus populations in forest ecosystems of A. araucana, and clarifies the associations between these characteristics and the geographic distributions of populations.  相似文献
