Summary Community respiration rates of the plankton in the upper meter of a shallow equatorial lake (Lake George, Uganda) show diurnal fluctuations within the range 1 to 4.5 mg O2/mg chlorophyll a · h. In the deeper water, below the euphotic zone, rates show less variation and approximate to a value of 1 mg O2/mg chl a · h. Comparative field and laboratory measurements of the relationship between community respiration and temperature indicate that the diurnal variation observed is not a simple function of temperature variation. Field measurements suggest that the rate of community respiration tends to increase, in a non-linear manner, as the daily cumulative photosynthesis per unit population increases.A series of laboratory experiments are described which attempt to fractionate, by chemical means, the oxygen uptake due to phytoplankton, bacteria and zooplankton. Although the results were very variable they indicate that somewhere between 10 and 50% of the total oxygen uptake is due non-algal material. The influence of these findings on calculations of net daily photosynthesis is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Lake George, a shallow lake in western Uganda, supports a permanent and dense crop of phytoplankton, and may be regarded as eutrophic although the ambient concentrations of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus are low. The figures for the annual nutrient loadings (Viner and Smith, 1973) would suggest, however, a eutrophic lake when analysed on the scheme of eutrophication proposed by Vollenweider (1968).The horizontal distribution of chlorophyll a shows a concentric pattern, with the maximum values occurring towards the center. This horizontal variation is thought to reflect water movements, and a general pattern of water flow is proposed. The majority of the species show no seasonal variation but populations of both Anabaena and Melosira show annual variations. These two species also have a horizontal distribution pattern which is the reverse of other species. This pattern is used to support the proposed movements of water.Phytoplankton generation times are discussed in relation to the diurnal cycle occurring in Lake George.  相似文献

Lake Mburo and Lake Kachera are shallow, eutrophic lakes in mid‐western Uganda. Lake Mburo recorded higher values of Secchi and eutrophic depths and lower extinction coefficient (k) values. The lakes showed a ‘red shift’ phenomenon in maximum light transmission. The average values of electrical conductivity in Lake Mburo and Lake Kachera were 136 and 244 μS cm?1, respectively. The pH values indicated high photosynthetic activity. Dissolved oxygen concentration averaged 6.9 and 7.8 mg l?1 in Lake Mburo and Lake Kachera, respectively. The lakes had high total nitrogen (TN) : total phosphorus (TP) ratios averaging 200 and 280 in Lake Mburo and Lake Kachera, respectively. The lakes are dominated by cyanobacterial blooms that reduce light penetration to less than 1 m. Lake Mburo had a lower algal biomass than Lake Kachera. Chlorophyll a concentrations correlated positively (r = 0.73, P < 0.05) with the extinction coefficient in Lake Mburo but not in Lake Kachera. The correlations between chlorophyll a and TN and TP were also high. Both lakes recorded high primary productivity, Lake Mburo showing higher values. The study highlighted the need to investigate the organism–community interrelationships in the two water bodies.  相似文献

(1) Chaoborus anomalus and Chaoborus ceratopogones were found together throughout the year in Lake George, Uganda, the larvae forming 65-85% by number of the macro-benthos of the central lake area. (2) First and second instar larvae were wholly planktonic and third and fourth instar larvae mainly benthic during the day, migrating into the water column at night. A proportion of the third and fourth instar larvae were found in the water column during the day in the centre of the lake where light attenuation was greatest. C. anomalus showed a greater tendency to be benthic than C. ceratopogones. (3) Planktonic larvae were distributed in dense patches thought to be cohorts resulting from oviposition by swarms of adult females. The maximum density of planktonic larvae recorded was 31.7 × 102/m2 column. Third and fourth instar larvae were more evenly distributed in the benthos of the central lake area, the maximum density recorded was 79.9×102/m2. (4) First and second instar larvae occurred mainly in the inshore regions, very few were found in the centre of the lake. Oviposition is likely to take place inshore. The patches of planktonic larvae were not stationary. Dispersal of larvae away from the shore may be active or may result from complex oscillations of the water mass produced by storms. In C. ceratopogones the floating egg batches could he carried away from the north shore by currents produced by inflows and prevailing winds. (5) Adults of C. ceratopogones were more numerous during the rainy seasons than during the dry seasons. A similar, though less marked seasonality was found in the occurrence of C. anomalus adults. The biomass of benthic larvae of C. ceratopo-gones was estimated at 387.0 mg C/m2 in the dry season, June 1970, and 130 0 mg C/m2 in the rainy season, October 1970. That of C. anomalus was constant at 241.7 and 254.3 mg C/m2 in June and October, 1970 respectively. (6) No difference was found in the horizontal distribution of the larvae, or in the size and weight attained by the various stages. (7) Interspecific differences were found in the mean number of eggs per adult female (309, C. anomalus and 224, C. ceratopogones); in the nature ofthe egg batches; n i the morphology of the larval mouthparts and pharyngeal sphincters, as well as i n the vertical distribution of the larvae and seasonal occurrence of the adults. On the basis of these differences the co-existing species are thought not to be competing for the same resources.  相似文献

Lake Baringo is a shallow equatorial lake. This paper reports a diel study of the depth-time distribution of phytoplankton and photosynthesis at one location in Lake Baringo on 10 March 1989. The water column shows a pattern of diurnal stratification probably accentuated by the high turbidity of the water and therefore rapid attenuation of solar energy. This stratified pattern breaks down at night due to atmospheric cooling and the regular onset of winds in the early evening. The phytoplankton is dominated byMicrocystis aeruginosa with some associated epiphytes. It concentrates in the narrow euphotic zone during the diurnal period of stratification due to buoyancy of theMicrocystis; evening breakdown of the thermocline results in the phytoplankton being mixed throughout the water column. A series of measurements of photosynthesis throughout the diurnal period gives an areal rate of 3.8 g O2 m−2 d−1. The relationship between this value and the level of fish exploitation in Lake Baringo is discussed. The diel cycle in Lake Baringo is interpreted as dominating over any seasonal limnological cycle in the lake.  相似文献

Observations on the Cladocera of Lake George, Uganda   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Mary J.  Burgis 《Journal of Zoology》1973,170(3):339-349
Seven species of Cladocera were recorded from the shallow, equatorial Lake George in Uganda, during the period 1967–72. Of these only three, Moina micrura Kurz, Ceriodaphnia cornuta Sars and Daphnia barbata Weltner, are found in the open water and they form a small proportion of the total zooplankton biomass, which is dominated by a cyclopoid copepod. All three species are found throughout the year and carry parthenogenetic eggs at all times. They are smaller species than those predominating in some other East African lakes and some comparisons are also made between C. cornuta and four other species of that genus studied in Great Britain. The mean body lengths and clutch sizes of ovigerous females of C. cornuta vary little through the year. This is, presumably, a reflection of the relatively constant environment in Lake George. Alona poppei is only found in the open water intermittently and is thought to be swept from the peripheral swamps during heavy rains.
The general scarcity of Cladocera in Lake George is thought to be due, either to a shortage of food particles of suitably small size in the phytoplankton, which is dominated by large blue-green algae, or to predation. Although Cladocera are certainly eaten by fish, quantitative data, with which to substantiate either of these hypotheses, is lacking.  相似文献

Lake Elmenteita (0°27S, 36°15E) lies on the floor of the rift valley at 1776 m above sea level in Kenya. As a consequence of lower than average rainfall, the mean depth decreased from 1.1 to 0.65 m during the study period (February 1973 to August 1974). The initiation of major biological changes coincided with a period of rapid evaporative concentration in 1973 (February to April) when the conductivity increased from 19.1 to 27.0 mmhmos cm-1. Spirulina platensis, Spirulina laxissima and Anabaenopsis arnoldii decreased in abundance precipitously in parallel with large declines in chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton photosynthetic rates. Once the overall abundance of phytoplankton had declined and the transparency had increased, primary productivity by benthic algae increased significantly. Paradiaptomus africanus, the only copepod living in the lake, was abundant in February and March 1973, but was gone by May. Eight hypotheses to explain these changes are evaluated and converge on the suggestion that a rate of change of salinity greater than 5 mmhmos cm-1 per month and a salinity exceeding 25 mmhmos cm-1 cannot be tolerated by P. africanus and adversely effects the nitrogen fixer, A. arnoldii. Furthermore, the loss of P. africanus and oxygenation of the sediments by benthic algae reduce the rate of recyling of nutrients which alters phytoplankton abundance and species composition.  相似文献

A multispecifies trophic model called ECOPATH II, which can be used to describe the trophic relationships in aquatic ecosystems on a quantitative basis, is briefly presented. When properly used, it can help to explain the trophic relationships in ecosystems and possible evolution of fishstocks after modifications of the environment (e.g. eutrophication, introduction of a new population and/or a significant increase of the fishing effort), and to compare the trophic structure of several ecosystems. Examples are provided on two shallow lakes: Lake Ihema and Lake Naivasha. They are compared with Lake George which was previously documented.  相似文献

Lake George, a shallow equatorial lake, supports a Haplochromis species-flock of 17 species. Of the five species that dominate the species-flock, two feed mainly on benthic and mid-water dipteran larvae, one is a piscivore, one exploits microcrustacea and another the abundant blue-green phytoplankton population. There is little stenophagy in this group. There is a seasonal variation in the total gill-net catch of the three dominant Haplochromis of the sandy shoal habitat, with high catches in ths wet season and low catches in the dry. Similar fluctuations are known to occur in the commercial catches of Sarotherodon niloticus. No seasonal changes were observed in the proportions of the individual species making up this community and the individuals breed all the year round.
A combination of ecologically unspeeialized species, resulting in an efficient exploitation and stability of the ecosystem may account for the observed high fish biomass and the high numbers of individuals. Taking into account the effect of the monotony of the environmental conditions, the physical continuty of the available habitat types and the relatively short time that the lake has been in existence, coupled with the apparent lack of rigid ecological requirements by the individual members of the Haplochromis group, it is suggested that this species-flock may still be at an early stage in its evolutionary develoment.  相似文献

A suction trap was used to collect adult Nematocera from the equatorial Lake George, Uganda. The dominant species, Chaoborus (Neochaoborus) anomalus Edwards, Chaoborus (Sayomyia) ceratopogones and Procladius (Procladius) brevipetiolatus Goetghebuer, all showed a lunar periodicity of occurrence in the samples being most abundant in the first quarter of the lunar month and least abundant in the third quarter. Chaoborus also showed a seasonal variation in occurrence, not apparent in Procladius. Observations on sex ratios and on longevity, swarming and oviposition behaviour of Chaoborus made at Lake George and at the neighbouring Lake Edward are also described.  相似文献

The relationship of total body length to formalin dry weight for individuals of Thermo-cyclops hyalinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti, from the tropical Lake George, Uganda, is given and shows that previous estimates of individual biomass and, therefore, of zooplankton standing crop and production based on them, were too high. The annual mean standing crop of total Crustacea, in 1969–70 was 828 mg (dw) m?2 and for T. hyalinus, the dominant species, 559 mg (dw) m?2 Biomass tended to be higher in the mid-lake area than inshore. The annual mean production of T. hyalinus is now estimated to be 44 mg (dw) m?2 day.  相似文献

Phytoplankton abundance and composition in the hypertrophic man-made Lake Arancio was analyzed, based on a programme of weekly sampling from May 1990 to November 1991 and supported by measurements of limnological parameters. The highest value of phytoplankton biomass (78 mg l–1) was observed in October 1990, during a bloom of the desmid Closterium limneticum var. fallax, while the lowest (0.15 mg l–1) was measured in April 1991. During spring, autumn and winter 1990, species of the genus Closterium dominated the community, in the sequence: C. aciculare, C. limneticum var. fallax, C. limneticum. The summer community was more diverse with the predominance of organisms belonging to Chlorophyceae (Chlamydomonas, Eudorina, Coelastrum) and Cyanophyceae (Microcystis, Anabaena). In spring 1991, there was a long clear-water phase during which small green algae (Ankyra, Oocystis) and cryptomonads dominated. Subsequently, the summer season was characterized by a clear sequence of dominants, drawn, in turns, from species belonging to: Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae. The physics of the reservoir and its depth, owing to filling/draining constraints in a summer-arid climate, appeared to play a key role in the dynamics of phytoplankton community.  相似文献

(1) Total copepod numbers per litre in Lake George, Uganda, vary slightly during the course of a year. Numbers increase during the dry seasons June-August and January-February, and decrease during the rains. This variation is more marked in the mid-lake area, where copepod numbers are higher, but the change in numbers is not more than two-fold. By comparison with populations in temperate regions the population in Lake George is stable in size and shows little seasonal variation. (2) The carnivorous cyclopoid Mesocyclops leuckarti forms only 4–21 %, by num-bers, of the total copepod population and does not occur in numbers large enough to be analysed profitably. (3) The bulk of the population is the much smaller Thermoeyclops hyalinus and analysis of this population into the main development stages of its life history shows an almost constant age structure over the lake as a whole, throughout the year. (4) The development time of the eggs, as determined previously (Burgis, 1970), is 1–5 days. This, plus mean development-times of 6 and 11 days for nauplii and copepodites respectively, has been used to determine the daily rate of recruitment from each stage of the life history to the next. The recruitment from nauplii to copepodites and from copepodites to adults are very similar and almost constant. Recruitment from eggs to nauplii is. however, mueh greater, and it thus appears that the major loss to the population is at this eariy stage in the life history. This may well be due to predation by the larvae of Chaohorus. (5) Using this recruitment rate from eggs to nauplii, the potential turnover time of population numbers was calculated to have a mean value of 4–2 days for the lake as a whole. This is similar to maximum summer turnover times found by authors such as Hall (1964) for Daphnia populations in temperate waters. (6) The biomass of individuals at various stages in their life history was deter-mined as carbon, and application of these determinations to the numerical counts was used to calculate the standing-crop biomass in the lake. With a constant population of stable age-structure it is possible to estimate the daily biomass production from the turnover time of numbers. For the population of Thermocyelops hyalinus in Lake George this gives a mean figure of 211 μg C/I/day during 1969–70. (7) Instantaneous birth rates and instantaneous rates of change in population numbers (b and r) have also been calculated for the population of Thermocyclops. The values of r show some variation at one centre site, fluctuating around zero, but when calculated for lake mean figures r is hardly different from zero throughout the year. The values of b also show fluctuations when calculated for one site but when calculated for lake mean figures show no more than two-fold variations, being higher at the beginning of the two rainy seasons. The values of b are not as high as those attained during the summer in some temperate Daplmia populations such as those described by Wright (1965). The values of ZJ tend to be higher inshore than in mid-lake areas of the lake. (8) The instantaneous mortality rate r/has been calculated from b-r. With such very small values of r, d is always very similar to b. Most, if not all, recruitment to the population is counterbalanced by loss, probably predation. (9) At one inshore site the population was analysed and counted in detailed cate-gories, over a period of 10 days. This allowed a more accurate estimation of the standing-crop biomass and thus of production. A mean value of 103 μg C/l/day was obtained for these samples. (10) The mean daily level of production, c. 211 μg C/l/day, o(Thermocyclops hyalinus in Lake George, is among the higher values of zooplankton production available for comparison most of which are from temperate regions of the world. The fact that it is applicable throughout the year gives an annual value of 77g C/m3/year which is probably high.  相似文献

Microbial food web in a large shallow lake (Lake Balaton, Hungary)   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Seasonal variations of phyto-, bacterio- and colourless flagellate plankton were followed across a year in the large shallow Lake Balaton (Hungary). Yearly average chlorophyll-a concentration was 11 µg 1–1, while the corresponding values of bacterioplankton and heterotrophic nanoflagellate (HNF) plankton biomass (fresh weight) were 0.24 mg 1–1 and 0.35 mg 1–1, respectively. About half of planktonic primary production was channelled through bacterioplankton on the yearly basis. However, there was no significant correlation between phytoplankton biomass and bacterial abundance. Bacterial specific growth rates were in the range of 0.009 and 0.09 h–1, and ended to follow the seasonal changes in water temperature. In some periods of the year, predator-prey relationships between the HNF and bacterial abundance were obvious. The estimated HNF grazing on bacteria varied between 3% and 227% of the daily bacterial production. On an annual basis, 87% of bacterial cell production was grazed by HNF plankton.  相似文献

An oscillating steady state is described of phytoplankton, dominated by Prochlorothrix hollandica and Oscillatoria limnetica, and sestonic detritus in shallow, eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands). A steady-state model for the coupling of the phytoplankton and detritus is discussed in relation to field and experimental data on phytoplankton growth and decomposition. According to model predictions, the phytoplankton to detritus ratio decreases hyperbolically at increasing phytoplankton growth rate and is independent of a lake's trophic state. The seston in L. Loosdrecht contains more detritus than phytoplankton as will apply to many other lakes. The model provides a basis for estimating the loss rate of the detritus, including decomposition, sedimentation and hydraulic loss. In a shallow lake like L. Loosdrecht detritus will continue to influence the water quality for years.  相似文献

The northern end of Lake George, Uganda, and its associated wetlands receive localized metal pollution from a former copper mine and tailings left after metal extraction. The aim of this study was to determine (i) whether the heavy metals are a threat to the biology of the major commercial fish species and (ii) whether consumption of the fish threatens human health. Concentrations of copper, zinc, cobalt and nickel in detrital sediments, plankton, and five fish species from sites in Lake George, the Kazinga Channel and Lake Edward (which are inter-connected) were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The detrital sediments of Hamukungu Bay, Lake George, had average concentrations (g/g dry weight) of 96.3 zinc, 270.4 copper, 57.4 cobalt and 42.8 nickel. There were no significant differences between the Hamukungu Bay and the North Lake George site of Bushatu: both receive inflows from the mining activities. Concentrations of copper and zinc were significantly higher than background values from unpolluted freshwater ecosystems. Plankton samples showed a metal concentration gradient consistent with a gradient from the source of pollution in northern Lake George, along the Kazinga Channel to Lake Edward. The liver tissues of fish had markedly higher concentrations of copper and zinc than flesh. Concentrations of cobalt and nickel were relatively low. The highest mean concentrations of metals in liver tissue occurred in Oreochromis leucostictus (189.0 g/g Cu) and Bagrus docmac (187.5 g/g Zn) whilst the lowest occurred in Oreochromis niloticus (15.3 g/g and 78.2 g/g dry weight copper and zinc, respectively). However, O. niloticus contained the highest concentrations of cobalt (11.2 g/g) and nickel (3.8 g/g). Liver Somatic Indices (LSI) of the fish species from the different sites indicated a reduction of LSI in those fish from the most contaminated zones of northern Lake George compared with all other sites. This suggests there could be anatomical and physiological abnormalities linked to the heavy metal pollution. The flesh had only low concentrations of metals; well within international guidelines for consumption. A person would have to consume 9 kg of fresh flesh of Clarias sp. and 65 kg of O. leucostictus daily to exceed the WHO recommended intake for copper, and even more for other metals. This implies that currently metal pollution in Lake George presents an ecological rather than a human health concern.  相似文献

A study was made of the mortality and aerobic decomposition of light- and phosphorus-limited cultures of Oscillatoria limnetica, a dominant phytoplankton species in shallow, eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands). When placed in the dark at 20 °C, most cells died and lysed within twelve days. The labile organic matter was completely decomposed within three weeks. Absorbance spectra indicated that blue green algae may contributed significantly to the refractory dissolved substances in the lake. Refractory particulate matter constituted from 7 to 24% of the biomass of O. limnetica, depending on the growth rate before incubation in the dark. The decomposition rate of this fraction was 0.005 d–1. On a basis of a steady-state model of the dynamics of phytoplankton detritus, the areal organic dry weight concentration of the detritus in the lake is ca. 60 g m–2. This means the quantities of detritus in the seston and epipelon are about equal.  相似文献
