Paternal-age and birth-order effect on the human secondary sex ratio.   总被引:10,自引:3,他引:7
Because of conflicting results in previous analyses of possible maternal and paternal effects on the variation in sex ratio at birth, records of United States live births in 1975 were sorted by offspring sex, live birth order (based on maternal parity), parental races, and, unlike prior studies, ungrouped parental ages. Linear regression and logistic analysis showed significant effects of birth order and paternal age on sex ratio in the white race data (1.67 million births; 10,219 different combinations of independent variables). Contrary to previous reported results, the paternal-age effect cannot be ascribed wholly to the high correlation between paternal age and birth order as maternal age, even more highly correlated with birth order, does not account for a significant additional reduction in sex-ratio variation over that accounted for by birth order alone.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with testing association between marker genotypes and traits with variable age at onset. Two methods are proposed, one which makes use of both age-at-ascertainment and age-at-onset information, and one which may be applied when only age-at-ascertainment information is available. (Here, by age-at-ascertainment, is meant the subject's age when presence of onset and age at onset are determined; for subjects who have died or are otherwise censored before ascertainment, the censoring time should be used instead). Adjustment for confounding due to population stratification is carried out by conditioning on observed traits and parental genotypes, or, if complete parental genotypes are not available, by conditioning on observed traits and the minimal sufficient statistics under the null hypothesis for the parental genotypes. Proportional hazards regression models and logistic regression models are used to motivate the methods, but correct type I error rates result even if the models are not correct. An illustrative example is described.  相似文献

A group of 15 patients who underwent bilateral medial rectus muscle recession for esodeviation were analyzed for factors most closely correlated with the outcome. The data evaluated included age of onset of strabismus, refractive error, year of surgery, age of surgery, sex, preoperative esodeviation, and clinical assessment of preoperative heterophoria. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationships of these parameters. Computer-assisted logistic regression analysis and discriminant analysis were used to asses predictive variables for a postoperative increase in the AC/A ratio.  相似文献

This investigation aims to contribute to the existing literature on demographic and ecological factors affecting the sex ratio at birth, by analysing the births in Croatia from 1998 to 2008. Data from birth certificates for all Croatian births for the investigated period (n=420,256) were used to establish the link between parental ages, birth order, region of birth, parental occupation and parental education level, and sex of the child. The χ2 test and t-test were used to assess the significance of each of the factors, along with multiple logistic regression to control for possible confounding effects. The results suggest that a joint higher age of both parents significantly lowers the sex ratio at birth. There is also a regional variation in sex ratio at birth, the lowest value being in Central Croatia and the highest in the City of Zagreb. Changes in the reproductive physiology of older parents are most probably responsible for the lower sex ratio, although the limited sample size warns against widespread generalizations. The causes of the regional variation in sex ratio at birth are most likely the different regional levels of obesity and physical inactivity.  相似文献

The accuracy of sex determinations based on visual assessments of the mental eminence, orbital margin, glabellar area, nuchal area, and mastoid process was tested on a series of 304 skulls of known age and sex from people of European American, African American, and English ancestry as well as on an ancient Native American sample of 156 individuals whose sex could be reliably determined based on pelvic morphology. Ordinal scores of these sexually dimorphic traits were used to compute sex determination discriminant functions. Linear, kth-nearest-neighbor, logistic, and quadratic discriminant analysis models were evaluated based on their capacity to minimize both misclassifications and sex biases in classification errors. Logistic regression discriminant analysis produced the best results: a logistic model containing all five cranial trait scores correctly classified 88% of the modern skulls with a negligible sex bias of 0.1%. Adding age at death, birth year, and population affinity to the model did not appreciably improve its performance. For the ancient Native American sample, the best logistic regression model assigned the correct pelvic sex to 78% of the individuals with a sex bias of only 0.2%. Similar cranial trait frequency distributions were found in same-sex comparisons of the modern African American, European American, and English samples. The sexual dimorphism of these modern people contrasts markedly with that of the ancient Native Americans. Because of such population differences, discriminant functions like those presented in this paper should be used with caution on populations other than those for which they were developed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the risk of viable unbalanced offspring for a parental carrier of reciprocal translocation. On a large computerized database of reciprocal translocations we used logistic regression to model this risk. The status of the progeny is the outcome variable. Explanatory covariates are cytogenetic characteristics of the translocation, age and sex of the parental carrier, and potential viability of the gametes. The results obtained by the logistic model demonstrate the important role of certain variables such as the sex of the parental carrier and the R band length of the translocated segments. Within the group of lower risk (risk of viable unbalanced offspring less than 5%), 97% of the individuals are correctly classified with this model. For this group, the choice prenatal diagnosis can be best discussed by considering both the risk for viable unbalanced offspring and the risk of induced abortion following prenatal diagnosis.  相似文献

A genome scan was performed on the first phase sample of the Genetics of Recurrent Early-Onset Depression (GenRED) project. The sample consisted of 297 informative families containing 415 independent affected sibling pairs (ASPs), or, counting all possible pairs, 685 informative affected relative pairs (555 ASPs and 130 other pair types). Affected cases had recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) with onset before age 31 years for probands or age 41 years for other affected relatives; the mean age at onset was 18.5 years, and the mean number of depressive episodes was 7.3. The Center for Inherited Disease Research genotyped 389 microsatellite markers (mean spacing of 9.3 cM). The primary linkage analysis considered allele sharing in all possible affected relative pairs with the use of the Z(lr) statistic computed by the ALLEGRO program. A secondary logistic regression analysis considered the effect of the sex of the pair as a covariate. Genomewide significant linkage was observed on chromosome 15q25.3-26.2 (Zlr=4.14, equivalent LOD = 3.73, empirical genomewide P=.023). The linkage was not sex specific. No other suggestive or significant results were observed in the primary analysis. The secondary analysis produced three regions of suggestive linkage, but these results should be interpreted cautiously because they depended primarily on the small subsample of 42 male-male pairs. Chromosome 15q25.3-26.2 deserves further study as a candidate region for susceptibility to MDD.  相似文献

It is well recognized that age at onset of Huntington disease (HD) is strongly influenced by the sex of the affected parent, and this has lead to suggestions that genetic imprinting or maternal specific factors may play a role in the expression of the disease. This study evaluated maternal and paternal ages, birth order, parental age at onset, and sex of the affected parent and grandparent in 1,764 patients in the National HD Roster by using linear-regression techniques which incorporated a weighted least-squares approach to accommodate the correlation among siblings. It was found that paternal age is negatively associated with age at onset of HD, particularly among subjects who inherit the mutant gene from grandfathers. Apparent associations between age at onset and birth order and between age at onset and maternal age were not significant after adjustment for paternal age. The paternal age effect is strongest among juvenile-onset cases and individuals with anticipation of greater than or equal to 10 years, although it is detectable across the entire age-at-onset distribution. The tendency for older fathers, including those not transmitting the HD gene, to have affected offspring with early-onset disease may be consistent with a gene imprinting mechanism involving DNA methylation. Because paternal age in unaffected fathers is also a significant determinant of age at onset, methylation in this context might involve HD modifier genes or the normal HD allele.  相似文献

Objective: The objective was to test the hypothesis that maternal obesity is associated with younger age of offspring's obesity onset. Research Methods and Procedures: We used prospective, nationally representative, longitudinal data collected across Waves I (1995; 12 to 20 years), II (1996; 13 to 20 years), and III (2001; 18 to 28 years) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 14,654; 49% female). Interval regression analysis was used to assess the association between maternal obesity and age at offspring's obesity onset (International Obesity Task Force BMI ≥30 equivalent age‐ and sex‐specific cut‐off points for adolescents and BMI ≥30 for young adults) using self‐reported heights and weights, adjusting for race/ethnicity, sex, parental education, and family income, accounting for complex sampling design. Results: The net effect of having an obese mother varied by race/ethnicity and was associated with a significantly earlier age at obesity onset (p = 0.0001) for whites [β= ?8.1 year, 95% confidence interval (CI), ?9.3; ?6.9)], blacks (β = ?10.8 years, 95% CI, ?12.4; ?9.2), Hispanics (β = ?7.0 years, 95% CI, ?9.2; ?4.8), and Asians (β = ?8.6 years, 95% CI, ?13.3; ?3.9). Earlier obesity onset (<18 years) was associated with increased severity at young adulthood (mean BMI, 36.0 ± 0.3 kg/m2) vs. onset after age 18 (mean BMI, 34.4 ± 0.2 kg/m2; p = 0.0001). There were no sex differences in the association of maternal obesity to age at obesity onset. Conclusions: Having an obese mother was associated with earlier age at obesity onset across all race/ethnic groups, particularly non‐Hispanic blacks. Early obesity onset has important health consequences because of its association with more severe adult obesity.  相似文献

BackgroundParental age has been associated with several childhood cancers, albeit the evidence is still inconsistent.AimTo examine the associations of parental age at birth with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) among children aged 0–14 years using individual-level data from the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium (CLIC) and non-CLIC studies.Material/methodsWe analyzed data of 3182 incident AML cases and 8377 controls from 17 studies [seven registry-based case-control (RCC) studies and ten questionnaire-based case-control (QCC) studies]. AML risk in association with parental age was calculated using multiple logistic regression, meta-analyses, and pooled-effect estimates. Models were stratified by age at diagnosis (infants <1 year-old vs. children 1–14 years-old) and by study design, using five-year parental age increments and controlling for sex, ethnicity, birthweight, prematurity, multiple gestation, birth order, maternal smoking and education, age at diagnosis (cases aged 1–14 years), and recruitment time period.ResultsAdjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) derived from RCC, but not from the QCC, studies showed a higher AML risk for infants of mothers ≥40-year-old (OR = 6.87; 95% CI: 2.12–22.25). There were no associations observed between any other maternal or paternal age group and AML risk for children older than one year.ConclusionsAn increased risk of infant AML with advanced maternal age was found using data from RCC, but not from QCC studies; no parental age-AML associations were observed for older children.  相似文献

Digital photogrammetric methods were used to collect diameter, area, and perimeter data of the acetabulum for a twentieth-century skeletal sample from France (Georges Olivier Collection, Musée de l’Homme, Paris) consisting of 46 males and 36 females. The measurements were then subjected to both discriminant function and logistic regression analyses in order to develop osteometric standards for sex assessment. Univariate discriminant functions and logistic regression equations yielded overall correct classification accuracy rates for both the left and the right acetabula ranging from 84.1% to 89.6%. The multivariate models developed in this study did not provide increased accuracy over those using only a single variable. Classification sex bias ratios ranged between 1.1% and 7.3% for the majority of models. The results of this study, therefore, demonstrate that metric analysis of acetabular size provides a highly accurate, and easily replicable, method of discriminating sex in this documented skeletal collection. The results further suggest that the addition of area and perimeter data derived from digital images may provide a more effective method of sex assessment than that offered by traditional linear measurements alone.  相似文献

This study aimed to identify dietary behaviors that might be considered as associated factors for overweight or obesity among French adolescents. Forty-nine of the 536 middle and high schools in Aquitaine (southwest of France) were invited to take part in the study. For each school, participating adolescents were selected using stratification by grade. A self-report questionnaire, including information about sex, age, dietary behaviors, physical and sedentary activities, and parental socioeconomic status (SES), was filled in by adolescents during class. Overweight and obesity were defined according to the age- and sex-specific body mass index cutoff points of the International Obesity Task Force. Multivariate analysis (logistic regression) was used to identify independent dietary factors associated with overweight including obesity and obesity alone (adjustment on sex, age, parental SES, and weight status and adolescents' sedentary activity). In addition to parental SES and weight status and adolescents' sedentary activity, some dietary behaviors are also independently and significantly associated with a higher prevalence of overweight including obesity: absence (OR 1.43, 0.91–2.23) or rare (OR 1.57, 1.23–2.01) breakfast intake (p?<?0.01) and absence (OR 5.03, 3.19–7.92) or rare (OR 1.90, 1.46–2.47) light afternoon meal intake (p?<?0.001). All variables were also significantly and independently associated with obesity alone. This study shows that socioeconomic factors and individual behaviors are associated with overweight or obesity. These results confirm the importance to carry out multifaceted educational actions among adolescents, by promoting physical activity and healthy food choices in order to prevent overweight and promote healthy lifestyle behaviors.  相似文献

Sex determination of birds is important for many ecological studies but is often difficult in species with monomorphic plumage. Morphology often provides a possibility for sex determination, but the characters need to be verified. We tested whether five passerine species can be sexed according to standard morphological measurements applying a forward logistic regression with sex determined by molecular analysis as the dependent variable. Furthermore, we tested whether the results can be used on a larger geographic scale by applying morphological sexing methods gained by similar studies from other regions to our data set. Of the five species of this study only Garden Warblers Sylvia borin could not be sexed morphologically. In the Robin Erithacus rubecula, 87.2% of all individuals were sexed correctly. For Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus, Willow Warblers Phylloscopus trochilus and Reed Buntings Emberiza schoeniclus, the respective values were 77.6, 89.4 and 86.4%. When the logistic regression functions from similar studies on Robins and Reed Buntings in Denmark and Scotland were applied to the birds from south-western Germany, they performed less well compared to the original dataset of these studies and compared to the logistic regression function of our own study. The same was the case for Willow Warblers when a wing length criterion used in Great Britain was applied to the birds of our study. These discrepancies may have several explanations: (1) the models are optimised for the dataset from which they were extracted, (2) inter-ringer variation in measurements, (3) the use of different age cohorts, (4) different morphology due to different habitat availability around the study site, or, most likely, (5) different morphology due to different migratory behaviour. We recommend that morphological sex differentiation methods similar to this study (1) be only used population specific, (2) only with one age cohort and (3) to adjust the extracted equations from time to time.  相似文献

Parameters of a mathematical function of growth, fit to the body weight curve of two randombred control populations of each sex of chickens from hatching through 45 weeks of age, were estimated. The logistic function was chosen from among growth formulae that express rate of gain as a function of weight at a given time and gain to be made. Two logistic parameters, growth-rate constant and age at the point of inflection, were estimated by the methods of sample quantiles and nonlinear regression from weekly mean body weights of 225 males and 281 females of the Rhode Island Red (RIR) line, and 164 males and 239 females of the White Leghorn (WL) line. Males had a larger growth-rate constant than females of the same line. The RIR line had a larger rate constant than the WL line, for each sex. Age at the point of inflection was similar for males and females in the RIR line, but smaller for males than females in the WL line. Sample quantiles yielded larger, less precise estimates of the growth-rate constant than nonlinear regression. Estimates of age at the point of inflection were usually smaller using sample quantiles.  相似文献

Individual genetic admixture estimates (IA) from European Americans (EAs) were computed in 7,996 members of the Gila River Indian Community (Arizona). Parental populations for the analysis were European Americans and full-heritage Pima Indians. A logistic regression was performed on 7,796 persons, to assess association of IA with type 2 diabetes. The odds ratio, comparing diabetes risk in full-heritage EAs with full-heritage Pima Indians, was 0.329 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.225-0.482). Proportional-hazards analysis was performed on 5,482 persons who were nondiabetic at their first examination and 1,215 subjects who developed diabetes during the study. The hazard risk ratio for IA was 0.455 (95% CI 0.301-0.688). Nondiabetic persons had significantly more European IA. In nondiabetic Pimans, multivariate linear regressions of quantitative predictors of type 2 diabetes mellitus, including fasting plasma glucose, 2-h post-load plasma glucose, and body-mass index, showed significant inverse relations with IA when controlled for sex and age. These results illustrate the ongoing evolution of populations by the mechanism of gene flow and its effect on disease risk in the groups with admixture. When the two parental populations differ in disease prevalence, higher or lower risk is associated with admixture, depending on the origin of the admixed alleles and the relative magnitude of the disease prevalence in the parental populations. These data also illustrate the strong genetic components in type 2 diabetes and are consistent with one susceptibility locus common to obesity and diabetes.  相似文献

Maternal factors in onset of Huntington disease.   总被引:11,自引:7,他引:4       下载免费PDF全文
Analyses of father-offspring and mother-offspring similarity in onset age suggest that nuclear genes account for a significant portion of the modification of onset age in Huntington disease. The effects of non-nuclear modifiers are supported by the finding that the offspring of affected women have significantly older mean ages of onset than offspring of affected men irrespective of the onset age in the parent. The absence of increased father-daughter similarity indicates that modification is not X-linked. The absence of reproductive advantage for late-onset individuals and the absence of a multigenerational maternal-lineage effect suggest that the modifying effect of the sex of the affected parent occurs in a single parental generation. Offspring of affected women with onset between ages 35 and 49 had a significantly older mean onset age than their mothers. This suggests that a protective effect may be conferred upon the offspring of affected women.  相似文献

Theoretical details are given of various oligogenic models for segregation analysis that are available as a general segregation analysis ("GENSEG") package, programmed in FORTRAN iv. The models allow for up to two autosomal loci and one X-linked locus, normally distributed or dichotomous phenotypes, variable age of onset, and various ascertainment functions (including one that allows the probability of becoming a proband to be dependent on the age of onset). Current programs are limited to the analysis of 2-generational data, using the joint likelihood of the sibship and parental phenotypes, unless it can be assumed that the pedigrees being analyzed are a random sample from the population; half-sibships and twins, however, are explicitly allowed.  相似文献

Summary Mice were sampled from a line selected for increased postweaning weight gain from three to six weeks and from a randombred control line originating from the same base population. Body weights were recorded at each of 14 ages from day 5 to day 98. The Richards and logistic growth functions were fitted to the growth trajectories of each individual mouse by a generalized non-linear least squares procedure. Estimated growth parameters (asymptotic weight, rate, shape of curve, age and weight at inflection, mean absolute growth rate and mean relative growth rate) were computed for each individual. The effects of line, litter within line, sex and line × sex interactions on these estimated parameters were then studied. Both the Richards and logistic functions fitted the data equally well and the plotted trajectories coincided over most of the growth curve. There was excellent agreement between the estimates of asymptotic weight and both age and weight at inflection based on the different functions. However, both functions apparently underestimated the asymptotic weight.Analyses of the line differences showed that selection for postweaning gain increased the mean absolute growth rate over the entire curve but had no effect on the relative growth rate or the shape of the growth curve. Full-sib analyses suggested the presence of considerable genetic variation and some high genetic correlations among the estimated growth parameters.Paper number 2942 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina State University Agricultural Experiment Station, Raleigh, North Carolina. Obesity is a common disorder with many complications. Although chronodisruption plays a role in obesity, few epidemiological studies have investigated the association between artificial light at night (ALAN) and obesity. Since sleep health is related to both obesity and ALAN, we investigated the association between outdoor ALAN and obesity after adjusting for sleep health. We also investigated the association between outdoor ALAN and sleep health. This cross-sectional survey included 8526 adults, 39–70 years of age, who participated in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Outdoor ALAN data were obtained from satellite images provided by the US Defense Meteorological Satellite Program. We obtained individual data regarding outdoor ALAN; body mass index; depression; and sleep health including sleep duration, mid-sleep time, and insomnia; and other demographic data including age, sex, educational level, type of residential building, monthly household income, alcohol consumption, smoking status and consumption of caffeine or alcohol before sleep. A logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between outdoor ALAN and obesity. The prevalence of obesity differed significantly according to sex (women 47% versus men 39%, p < 0.001) and outdoor ALAN (high 55% versus low 40%, p < 0.001). Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between high outdoor ALAN and obesity (odds ratio [OR] 1.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14–1.35, p < 0.001). Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that high outdoor ALAN was significantly associated with obesity after adjusting for age and sex (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.14–1.37, p < 0.001) and even after controlling for various other confounding factors including age, sex, educational level, type of residential building, monthly household income, alcohol consumption, smoking, consumption of caffeine or alcohol before sleep, delayed sleep pattern, short sleep duration and habitual snoring (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.06–1.36, p = 0.003). The findings of our study provide epidemiological evidence that outdoor ALAN is significantly related to obesity.  相似文献

Osteologists commonly assess the sex of skeletal remains found in forensic and archaeological contexts based on ordinal scores of subjectively assessed sexually dimorphic traits. Using known‐sex samples, logistic regression (LR) discriminant functions have been recently developed, which allow sex probabilities to be determined. A limitation of LR is that it emphasizes main effects and not interactions. Chi‐square automatic interaction detection (CHAID) is an alternative classification strategy that emphasizes the information in variable interactions and uses decision trees to maximize the probability of correct sex determinations. We used CHAID to analyze the predictive value of the 31 possible combinations of five sexually dimorphic skull traits that Walker used previously to develop logistic regression sex determination equations. The samples consisted of 304 individuals of known sex of English, African American, and European American origin. Based on practical considerations, selection criteria for the best sex predictive trait combinations (SPTCs) were set at accuracies for both sexes of 75% or greater and sex biases lower than 5%. Although several of the trees meeting these criteria were produced for the English and European American samples, none met them for the African American sample. In the series of out‐of‐sample tests we performed, the trees from the English and combined sample of all groups predicted best. Am J Phys Anthropol, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献
