Larval fish composition and abundance have been studied in fjords of south Patagonia. However, the ichthyoplankton of the adjacent shelf and slope waters of the Pacific Ocean, which is an important spawning and nursery ground for demersal fishery species (e.g. austral hake and Patagonian grenadier), remains largely unknown. To compare ichthyoplankton occurrence with environmental conditions in August 2013 and 2014 (austral winter), two bio-oceanographic cruises were carried out between 43° and 51°S. Conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) data and ichthyoplankton samples were collected. The highest frequency of occurrence (FO) was observed for eggs of lightfish Maurolicus parvipinnis (84 and 91% FO in 2013 and 2014, respectively) and larvae of the myctophid Lampanyctodes hectoris (60 and 94% FO, respectively). Ichthyoplankton composition and abundance varied significantly between years, and richness varied from 10 (2013) to 18 taxa (2014). Only larval L. hectoris showed a significant increase in abundance during the winter of 2014. Water column temperature and salinity were significantly different between years; the water was warmer and saltier in 2013. Canonical Correspondence Analysis detected positive relationships between temperature and salinity with egg abundance and larval distribution of Merluccius australis. The highest abundance of eggs of M. australis was found at ~6–10°C, mainly off south Guafo Island. Additionally, ichthyoplankton from the shelf-break area off south Patagonia showed a wider latitudinal distribution in the winter of 2014 than in 2013.  相似文献

Planktic foraminifers were studied in 96 samples collected in the southwestern Atlantic (30 °–60 °S, along 53 °W) in November 1993, mainly from depths between 0 and 50 m. Very high proportions of juveniles (unidentified) were present throughout the area, especially north of 37 °S, where they accounted for up to 70–80% of all shells recorded. For most species no clear vertical specific stratification was detected in the 0–50 m layer. Zoogeographic grouping of the 18 species identified allowed the defining of 5 distinct zones along the transect: Subtropical (north of 31 °S, 80% warm water individuals); Warm-Transitional (34 °–37 °S, 35% warm water); Transitional (37 °–49 °S, 99% cold water); Subantarctic (49–55 °S, 100% cold water); and Antarctic (south of 56 °S, 100% cold water). Boundaries between foraminiferal assemblage zones are in good agreement with hydrological fronts described for the area. Comparison of the present data with planktic collections from the North Atlantic show large differences in the proportions of various taxa. In the 14–24 °C range, G. bulloides is much more abundant in the northern hemisphere than in the southern one, whereas G. quinqueloba G. inflata and G. rubescens show the opposite trend. On the other hand, temperature-related percentage contributions within the 14 °–24 °C range indicate that the preferred thermic régimes of the 9 species considered are remarkably similar in the North and South Atlantic collections compared. The southernmost planktic distributional ranges of selected warm water taxa are roughly coincident with those established previously on the basis of surface sediments, disagreements being chiefly attributable to selective dissolution on the bottom. In contrast, at the bottom percentages of cold water foraminifers (G. bulloides G. pachyderma) are significantly enhanced with respect to their planktic populations, and their sedimentary northward limits extend well beyond their maximum ranges in the upper-layer plankton. It is suggested that submergence of these cold water species and northward displacement at subsurface depths is chiefly responsible for the mismatching patterns observed. Dissimilar species proportions in both hemispheres and plankton-sediment uncoupling can conceivably engender erroneous conclusions when distributional data are used for paleoecologic reconstructions with the aid of numerical analyses such as the Imbrie-Kipp transfer-function technique.  相似文献

Peirosauridae is composed of mid- to large-sized terrestrial mesoeucrododylian crocodyliforms distributed throughout Gondwanan landmasses. Here we describe a new peirosaurid that comes from the upper levels of the Portezuelo Formation (Turonian–Coniacian, Upper Cretaceous) from Loma de la Lata, Neuquén Province, Argentina. This specimen consists of some associated bones belonging to a single individual. In order to facilitate comparisons, we recognise two different peirosaurid morphotypes based on skull shape: broad- and narrow-snouted taxa. The new taxon may be related to broad-snouted taxa, especially Gasparinisuchus peirosauroides. The new taxon here reported has strong heterodont dentition when compared with other peirosaurids. As in related forms, the fourth dentary tooth is caniniform, very large, acute and transversely compressed (much more than other peirosaurids), and the anterior dentary teeth have less globular, sharp serrated crowns. Large interalveolar spaces are present between both mandibular and maxillary teeth, a trait only observed on the new taxon. With this addition, we elevate the number of Patagonian peirosaurids to four. Moreover, it represents together with Lomasuchus palpebrosus the second peirosaurid species described for the Portezuelo Formation.  相似文献

Subgeneric recognition of rodents of the genus Oligoryzomys from Argentina is specially difficult because morphologic and morphometric criteria to identify species are poorly defined. In order to contribute to the unequivocal identification and geographic distribution of Oligoryzomys species, we studied the restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) patterns of the D-loop region of the mitochondrial DNA in specimens collected from different regions of Argentina. PCR amplification products of 59 individuals were digested with five restriction enzymes. Patterns obtained were used to produce two phylogenetic consensus trees, one obtained with PAUP and the other with MIX analyses. All specimens from the Patagonia (southern region) clustered together and would correspond to O. longicaudatus. Individuals from the North grouped in four clusters (two of them comprising one individual), supported by high bootstrap values. The one including the 82% of the rodents from the northern region would correspond to the species O. chacoensis.  相似文献

We describe the first juvenile specimen of an eolacertid lizard. The material comes from one of the most important Eocene localities, the Messel Pit in Germany. The new specimen provides unique information on the early ontogeny of Eolacerta, the largest known lizard from Messel, with a maximum snout-vent length greater than 30 cm and a mass approaching 1 kg. The specimen described here, with a SVL of 11.3 cm and an estimated mass of 21 g, can be allocated more precisely to Eolacerta robusta based on the co-occurrence and the combination of following features: (1) the nasal process of premaxilla is long; (2) position of lacrimal (being more anteriorly located in Stefanikia siderea); (3) the postorbital process of jugal is broad; (4) the ratio of the anterior and posterior region of the frontal between the sulcus interfacialis; (5) a mid-parietal constriction of the parietal table is present; (6) the interparietal shield broadens anteriorly; (7) the transverse sulcus is straight anteriorly. The incipient character of the parietal constriction and the slightly lower number of maxillary teeth (28 vs. 30–32 in adults) are consistent with a juvenile animal. Very important is evidence for the presence of pterygoid dentition (pointed teeth arranged in a single line) and the absence of palatine dentition. Ceratobranchial I is observed for the first time for this species, and its shape and length are very similar to those of Lacertidae. There are 27 presacral vertebrae in the juvenile, as in adults. In the juvenile specimen, ventral keel on the centrum is present in all vertebrae. The ventromedial portion of the ischium is well preserved here and gives information on the exact shape of this portion, at least in juvenile form. The scalation, as far as it is preserved, is similar to that of Stefanikia, except that the rectangular subdigital scales are longer in comparison with their width, and therefore have a broader appearance.  相似文献

pV(VGJΦ), a single-stranded DNA binding protein of the vibriophage VGJΦ was subject to biochemical analysis. Here, we show that this protein has a general affinity for single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) as documented by Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA). The apparent molecular weight of the monomer is about 12.7kDa as measured by HPLC-SEC. Moreover, isoelectrofocusing showed an isoelectric point for pV(VGJΦ) of 6.82 pH units. Size exclusion chromatography in 150mM NaCl, 50mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.0 revealed a major protein species of 27.0kDa, suggesting homodimeric protein architecture. Furthermore, pV(VGJΦ) binds ssDNA at extreme temperatures and the complex was stable after extended incubation times. Upon frozen storage at -20°C for a year the protein retained its integrity, biological activity and oligomericity. On the other hand, bioinformatics analysis predicted that pV(VGJΦ) protein has a disordered C-terminal, which might be involved in its functional activity. All the aforementioned features make pV(VGJΦ) interesting for biotechnological applications.  相似文献

A total of 552 individuals of Rioraja agassizi (257 females and 295 males) were collected by bottom-trawl during research cruises. Sexual dimorphism was observed with females are heavier than males for a given total length (TL). Using logistic regression, it was determined that TL at 50% maturity of males was 475 mm TL and of females 520 mm TL. This estimation agrees with the morphological parameters measured. Although not statistically significant, a peak in reproductive activity was observed in males during late spring and summer. The monthly variation in the gonadosomatic index and oviducal gland width, together with the largest diameter of ovarian follicles, suggests that R. agassizi females have a partially defined annual reproductive cycle with two peaks, one from November (spring) to February (summer) and another in July (winter).  相似文献

A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP)-based method for species identification was applied to seven Japanese Lymantria species, including four Asian gypsy moth (AGM) species. We sequenced the partial end of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene, tRNA leucine, COII gene, and partial end of the tRNA lysine in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for one individual of each of the seven species. We analyzed the recognition sites of three restriction endonucleases and constructed a scheme for Lymantria species identification using PCR–RFLP. We then applied the scheme to 291 individuals from 45 populations of seven species. We found that all seven species were correctly identified using PCR–RFLP. These results suggest that PCR–RFLP is useful for identifying Japanese Lymantria species, which may be detected at Japanese ports.  相似文献

The mtDNA polymorphism in representatives of various archaeological cultures of the Developed Bronze Age, Early Scythian, and Hunnish-Sarmatian periods was analyzed (N = 34). It detected the dominance of Western-Eurasian haplotypes (70.6%) in mtDNA samples from the representatives of the ancient population of the Early Bronze Age–Iron Age on the territory of Altai Mountains. Since the 8th to the 7th centuries BC, a sharp increase was revealed in the Eastern Eurasian haplogroups A, D, C, and Z (43.75%) as compared to previous cultures (16.7%). The presence of haplotype 223-242-290-319 of haplogroup A8 in Dolgans, Itelmens, Evens, Koryaks, and Yakuts indicates the possible long-term presence of its carriers in areas inhabited by these populations. The prevalence of western Eurasian haplotypes is observed not only in the Altai Mountains but also in Central Asia (Kazakhstan) and the south of the Krasnoyarsk Krai. All of the three studied samples from the Western Eurasian haplogroups were revealed to contain U, H, T, and HV. The ubiquitous presence of haplotypes of haplogroup H and some haplogroups of cluster U (U5a1, U4, U2e, and K) in the vast territory from the Yenisei River basin to the Atlantic Ocean may indicate the direction of human settlement, which most likely occurred in the Paleolithic Period from Central Asia.  相似文献

The Wattled Curassow (Crax globulosa, Cracidae, Aves) is a large bird living in the Western Amazon basin and a critically endangered species in the Colombian and in the Peruvian Amazon. We carried out the first population genetics analysis of this species employing six nuclear microsatellite markers and sequences of the mtND2 gene. The main results are as follows. (1) The levels of gene diversity were high for the overall population as well as for each of the three islands for both microsatellites and mtDNA. (2) A small amount of genetic differentiation among populations was found with both types of markers (FST = 0.027 for microsatellites and NST = 0.17 for mitochondrial sequences). (3) Using microsatellites, the Geneclass 2.0 software detected a low correct assignment of individuals to their respective populations. The Structure software only detected one gene pool for the entire area studied. These results are relevant for conservation efforts of this critically endangered species.  相似文献

Thermoluminescence (TL) is one of the most important physical methods used in archaeometry for dating ceramics. In this study the newly developed procedures based on the use of the 210°C TL peak of quartz were applied to well-dated bricks of the church of the Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria. The resulting TL ages obtained from these well-dated bricks were used as a reference for selection of the suitable measurement procedure and to test the precision of the measurements and the accuracy of the technique. The optimized procedure was applied to the terrazzo fragments from the monastery church. The TL results provide a new understanding of the architectural history of the church. The improved measurement procedure including various dose evaluation techniques and the components of the annual dose assessment are described. The gene for the chromosomally encoded dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) of Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 14990 has been cloned and characterized. The structural gene encodes a polypeptide of 161 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular weight of 18,417. This trimethoprim-sensitive (Tmps) DHFR, SeDHFR, differs in only three amino acids (Val-31-->Ile, Gly-43-->Ala, and Phe-98-->Tyr) from the trimethoprim-resistant (Tmpr) S1 DHFR encoded by transposon Tn4003. Since in addition the S. epidermidis gene also forms part of an operon with thyE and open reading frame 140 as in Tn4003, the chromosomally located gene encoding the Tmps SeDHFR is likely to be the molecular origin of the plasmid-located gene encoding the Tmpr S1 DHFR. Site-directed mutagenesis and kinetic analysis of the purified enzymes suggest that a single Phe-->Tyr change at position 98 is the major determinant of trimethoprim resistance.  相似文献

Three new species of Metalasia from the Western Cape of South Africa are described; Metalasia tristis A.Bengtson & P.O.Karis, a small shrublet from the Groot Winterhoek Mountains, and Metalasia formosa A.Bengtson & P.O.Karis and Metalasia eburnea A.Bengtson & P.O.Karis both found in the Langeberg Mountains. The morphology and relationships of the three new species are discussed, and an updated key to the genus is provided.  相似文献

This work examined the diet of the porbeagle shark Lamna nasus in the south-west Atlantic Ocean (SWAO, Argentina, 52° S–56° S) by analysing the stomach content information obtained by scientific observers who sampled specimens captured as by-catch on-board commercial fishing vessels from 2010 to 2020. A total of 148 fishing sites were analysed, in which the estimated catch was composed mainly of hoki Macruronus magellanicus (56.00%) and southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis (33.13%). From 413 porbeagle sharks sampled (292 females and 121 males) ranging from 71 to 241 cm total length (LT) (mean: 179.76 ± 26.74 cm), 310 (75.06%) contained food in the stomachs. The forage fish were mainly hoki M. magellanicus (23.53%) and southern blue whiting M. australis (19.05%), followed by the Patagonian sprat Sprattus fuegensis (4.48%) and nototheniids (1.4%). Cephalopods and crustaceans accounted for 10% of the diet. The estimated trophic level was 4.35. Generalized linear models revealed that the consumption of hoki M. magellanicus and southern blue whiting M. australis increased with the LT of the porbeagle shark. Moreover, smaller porbeagle sharks preyed upon both small and large teleost fish, whereas larger porbeagle sharks predated exclusively upon large fish. The diet of porbeagle shark involved interactions with fisheries as it fed upon the fish species that constituted the main catch in the analysed fishing sites, as well as the main catches of the austral trawl fisheries. The ecological role of porbeagle shark observed in the SWAO exposed implications for fisheries management from a multispecies perspective.  相似文献

The taxonomy of marsupials from the late Paleogene of North America (Chadronian to Arikareean North American land mammal ages: late Eocene–late Oligocene) is reviewed based on new and previously undescribed fossil material as well as reevaluation of previously described material. Two families are recognized, the Herpetotheriidae and Peradectidae. Nine species of herpetotheriids are recognized within two genera: Herpetotherium Cope, 1873a and Copedelphys Korth, 1994, including one new species, H. tabrumi. The greatest diversity of herpetotheriids was in the Chadronian (four species). By the late Arikareean, only a single species is recognized. The range of Copedelphys is extended into the early Whitneyan (previously limited to Chadronian–Orellan). Among species of Herpetotherium, the ranges of two species have been extended: H. valens (Lambe, 1908) from the Chadronian is reported from the Orellan, and H. marsupium (Troxell, 1923) from the Uintan and Duchesnean is reported from the early Chadronian. The range of H. merriami (Stock and Furlong, 1922), previously only known from the Arikareean of Oregon, is expanded geographically eastward to Montana. Within the Peradectidae only three species are recognized: Peradectes cf. californicus (Stock, 1936) and Didelphidectes pumilis Hough, 1961 from the Chadronian, and Nanodelphys hunti (Cope, 1873b) from the Orellan to early Arikareean. Specimens previously identified as an unnamed new species of Nanodelphys from the Whitneyan and Arikareean are referred here to N. hunti.  相似文献

The influence of low temperature (5–29 °C) on the methanogenic activity of non-adapted digested sewage sludge and on temperature/leachate-adapted biomass was assayed by using municipal landfill leachate, intermediates of anaerobic degradation (propionate) and methane precursors (acetate, H2/CO2) as substrates. The temperature dependence of methanogenic activity could be described by Arrhenius-derived models. However, both substrate and adaptation affected the temperature dependence. The adaptation of biomass in a leachate-fed upflow anaerobic sludge-blanket reactor at approximately 20 °C for 4 months resulted in a sevenfold and fivefold increase of methanogenic activity at 11 °C and 22 °C respectively. Both acetate and H2/CO2 were methanized even at 5 °C. At 22 °C, methanogenic activities (acetate 4.8–84 mM) were 1.6–5.2 times higher than those at 11 °C. The half-velocity constant (K s) of acetate utilization at 11 °C was one-third of that at 22 °C while a similar K i was obtained at both temperatures. With propionate (1.1–5.5 mM) as substrate, meth‐anogenic activities at 11 °C were half those at 22 °C. Furthermore, the residual concentration of the substrates was not dependent on temperature. The results suggest that the adaptation of biomass enables the achievement of a high treatment capacity in the anaerobic process even under psychrophilic conditions. Aphids, the main suppliers of energy-rich honeydew, play an important role in the life of ants. However, the data on the trophobiotic ant–aphid associations in the majority of regions are still limited. We present the first data on the ant–aphid relations in the south of Western Siberia. Investigations were carried out in the most typical biotopes of forest-steppe and steppe zones in the territory of Novosibirsk and Kurgan regions (Russia) during 1993–2014. There were revealed 35 species of ants and 198 species of aphids. Detected 456 ant–aphid associations involved 28 ant species and 134 myrmecophilous aphids. Seven ant species were found to consume honeydew of 9 non-myrmecophilous aphids, scraping it from the plant. This behaviour is typical of subdominant and subordinate ants which do not protect their foraging areas. Ants associate with various numbers of aphid species. About 36% of ants attended aphid colonies of less than 5 species. The largest number of myrmecophilous aphids is associated with L. niger (Linnaeus, 1758) (103 species), Formica pratensis Retzius, 1783 (50), Formica rufa group (25–33), F. (Serviformica) fusca Linnaeus, 1758 (26) and F. (S.) cunicularia Latreille, 1798 (27). Different ants play unequal roles in the formation of trophobiotic interactions with aphids. Due to complex territorial and foraging behaviour, including high functional specialization among honeydew collectors, dominant ants of Formica s. str. are one of the leaders in this process. The role of L. niger and Formica ants of the subgenus Serviformica requires further detailed investigation.  相似文献
