To investigate the biases associated with manta tow surveys of Acanthaster planci, counts obtained by manta-towed observers were compared with counts made on SCUBA swims under a limited range of conditions. Five 10 m wide strip transects on different parts of two reefs and with different densities of A. planci were surveyed. On average, 22.7% of starfish counted on SCUBA searches were counted on manta tows over the same transect (SD=12.0%, n=69). This proportion is termed sightability. As sightability decreases with increasing transect width, we estimate that, on average, less than 5% of the A. planci present are counted on routine manta tows which are conducted over transect of undefined width. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine which of 33 variables explained most of the variation in sightability in 10 m wide transects. The most influential variables were the proportion of cryptic starfish and an index of the degree of reef complexity. A regression equation designed to improve estimates of the abundance of A. planci on routine manta tows was developed. However, as it explained only 39% of the variation in sightability, this equation is of limited value in stabilising the negative bias associated with manta tow counts. In view of the variability of this bias, the manta tow technique is not suitable for estimating absolute densities of A. planci. Manta tow surveys are appropriate for identifying gross relative differences between densities of A. planci, and thus for determining broad-scale patterns of abundance. As such, they are a cost-effective method of estimating the geographical extent of A. planci outbreaks.  相似文献

The organization of echinoderm Hox clusters is of interest due to the role that Hox genes play in deuterostome development and body plan organization, and the unique gene order of the Hox complex in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, which has been linked to the unique development of the axial region. Here, it has been reported that the Hox and ParaHox clusters of Acanthaster planci, a corallivorous starfish found in the Pacific and Indian oceans, generally resembles the chordate and hemichordate clusters. Summary Morphology and movement of the spines of Acanthaster planci were studied. All surfaces of the animal are covered with spines. The spines on the aboral surface are cylindrical with sharp tips. The spines on the oral surface are flat; they bend over to cover the mouth and the ambulacral grooves when these soft parts are stimulated. Those on the side of the animal make a barrier of crossed spines. Thus the structure and movement of the spines are well-adapted for defense.The junction between the primary aboral spine and its pedicel makes a movable joint. The ultrastructure of the connective tissue at the joint was studied. The connective tissue is mainly composed of collagen fibers. Presumed neurosecretory cells with processes which are filled with electron-dense granules of 0.2 m diameter were found between collagen fibers. Muscle fibers are mainly found in the connective tissue at the central holes. These observations support the view that the joint connective tissue has catch properties.  相似文献

Although benthic motile invertebrate communities encompass the vast majority of coral reef diversity, their response to habitat modification has been poorly studied. A variety of benthic species, particularly decapods, provide benefits to their coral host enabling them to cope with environmental stressors, and as a result benefit the overall diversity of coral-associated species. However, little is known about how invertebrate assemblages associated with corals will be affected by global perturbations, (either directly or indirectly via their coral host) or their consequences for ecosystem resilience. Analysis of a ten year dataset reveals that the greatest perturbation at Moorea over this time was an outbreak of the corallivorous sea star Acanthaster planci from 2006 to 2009 impacting habitat health, availability and size structure of Pocillopora spp. populations and highlights a positive relationship between coral head size and survival. We then present the results of a mensurative study in 2009 conducted at the end of the perturbation (A. planci outbreak) describing how coral-decapod communities change with percent coral mortality for a selected coral species, Pocillopora eydouxi. The loss of coral tissue as a consequence of A. planci consumption led to an increase in rarefied total species diversity, but caused drastic modifications in community composition driven by a shift from coral obligate to non-obligate decapod species. Our study highlights that larger corals left with live tissue in 2009, formed a restricted habitat where coral obligate decapods, including mutualists, could subsist. We conclude that the size structure of Pocillopora populations at the time of an A. planci outbreak may greatly condition the magnitude of coral mortality as well as the persistence of local populations of obligate decapods.  相似文献

Reef-building corals have been extensively degraded by Acanthaster planci infestations which have continued to spread throughout the Ryukyu archipelago since 1969. Intensive control efforts were undertaken by fishermen and divers by hand-collecting and disposal on land with removal of about 13 million starfish at the total cost of over 600 million yen from 1970 to 1983 fiscal year. The control programs were mostly unsuccessful for saving the reefs from predation because the efforts were executed on the basis of collecting efficiency, so that significant numbers of starfish continued predation after each belated campaign. Certain coral assemblages outside the Ryukyus were infested with unusually large numbers of A. planci simultaneously with the northern part of Okinawa Island and its neighboring islands in the early seventies. A shift of infestation sites occurred in the extratropical waters in the mid-seventies when the warm current, Kuroshio, changed its path and left the coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan. The Kuroshio is considered to be transporting larval A. planci downstream from the Ryukyus where large aggregations have continued to exist at different areas all through the period.  相似文献

Annual recruitment of Acanthaster planci over a 13 year period in a known juvenile refuge substratum on Suva Reef was very patchy in time and space. Macroscale recruitment events resulted in outbreaks over many thousands of hectares over 100 km of coastline whereas localised but intensive mesoscale events resulted in concenrated aggregations over areas of several tens of hectares. A very low level of recruitment occurred in most years but three intensive, macroscale recruitment events occurred in 1977, 1984 and 1987, and two localised but intensive recruitment events occurred in 1982 and 1983. Annual recruitment of A. planci between 1975–89 had no overt relationship with rainfall events, as proposed in the terrestrial run-off hypothesis on the cause of primary out-breaks. Growth rates within monitored cohorts were highly variable, but mean growth rates of two cohorts 1984 and 1987 were relatively similar. Mortality rates of three monitored cohorts were variable. Longevity of the 1977 cohort was 7–8 years, while that of the 1984 cohort was 2–3 years. Mortality of the 1987 cohort has been low to date (i.e. 4 years of age). Disease, attributed to an undescribed sporozoan pathogen, was responsible for two mass mortalities in the 1984 cohort, in 1984 and in 1986, and eventually resulted in the extinction of this cohort. Anecdotal reports indicate that outbreaks of A. planci are increasing in frequency and severity. According to Fijian reef fishermen, the starfish were low to moderate in abundance in the Suva area from the 1920s to the 1960s. A progressive build up occurred on some reefs in 1963–67 leading to a major outbreak episode from 1967–1971. The outbreaks were in a chronic phase between 1977–1989. Our findings demonstrate that there is no invariable pattern or process involved in the population dynamics of A. planci and that a single explanation of the A. planci phenomenon is therefore unlikely.  相似文献

 The distribution and abundance of soft coral genera on reefs of the central Great Barrier Reef was investigated in relation to reef position, recent history of disturbance, wave exposure, substratum slope and depth. Eighty-five 25 m long transects were surveyed at 10 m depth on windward sides of 14 mid- and outer-shelf reefs. A further 75 transects in different zones on one mid-shelf reef (Davies Reef) between 5 and 30 m depth were investigated. The crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci had caused large-scale mortality of scleractinians on eight of these reefs five to ten years prior to the study, and as a result, scleractinian cover was only 35–55% of that on the six unimpacted reefs. On the impacted reefs, stony corals with massive and encrusting growths form had smaller average colony diameters but similar or slightly lower numerical abundance. In contrast, mean colony size, cover and abundance of branching stony corals showed no difference between impacted and unimpacted reefs. Twenty-four genera of soft corals (in eight families) were recorded, and none showed different abundance or cover in areas of former A. planci impact, compared to unaffected sites. Similarly, no difference was detected among locations in the numbers or area cover of sponges, tunicates, zoanthids, Halimeda or other macro-algae. Mean soft coral cover was 2 to 5% at 10 m on sheltered mid-shelf reefs, and 12 to 17% on more current-exposed reefs. Highest cover and abundances generally occurred on platforms of outer-shelf reefs exposed to relatively strong currents but low wave energy. On Davies Reef, cover and colony numbers of the families Nephtheidae and Xeniidae were low within the zone of wave impact, in flow-protected bays and lagoons, on shaded steep slopes, and at depths above 10 and below 25 m. In contrast, distributions of genera of the family Alcyoniidae were not related to these physical parameters. The physical conditions of a large proportion of habitats appear “sub-optimal” for the fastest growing taxa, possibly preventing an invasion of the cleared space. Thus, in the absence of additional stress these shallow-water fore-reef zones appear sufficiently resilient to return to their pre-outbreak state of scleractinian dominance. Outbreaks of the coral-killing seastar Acanthaster planci are intense disturbances that can decimate coral reefs. These events consist of the emergence of large swarms of the predatory seastar that feed on reef-building corals, often leading to widespread devastation of coral populations. While cyclic occurrences of such outbreaks are reported from many tropical reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, their causes are hotly debated, and the spatio-temporal dynamics of the outbreaks and impacts to reef communities remain unclear. Based on observations of a recent event around the island of Moorea, French Polynesia, we show that Acanthaster outbreaks are methodic, slow-paced, and diffusive biological disturbances. Acanthaster outbreaks on insular reef systems like Moorea''s appear to originate from restricted areas confined to the ocean-exposed base of reefs. Elevated Acanthaster densities then progressively spread to adjacent and shallower locations by migrations of seastars in aggregative waves that eventually affect the entire reef system. The directional migration across reefs appears to be a search for prey as reef portions affected by dense seastar aggregations are rapidly depleted of living corals and subsequently left behind. Coral decline on impacted reefs occurs by the sequential consumption of species in the order of Acanthaster feeding preferences. Acanthaster outbreaks thus result in predictable alteration of the coral community structure. The outbreak we report here is among the most intense and devastating ever reported. Using a hierarchical, multi-scale approach, we also show how sessile benthic communities and resident coral-feeding fish assemblages were subsequently affected by the decline of corals. By elucidating the processes involved in an Acanthaster outbreak, our study contributes to comprehending this widespread disturbance and should thus benefit targeted management actions for coral reef ecosystems.  相似文献

To understand the role of sea temperature on the population biology of the crown-of-thorns sea star Acanthaster planci, the thermal window for embryonic and larval development was investigated. In two experiments, the response of embryos and larvae across 12 temperatures from 19.4 to 36.5 °C was quantified as the percentage of individuals reaching cleavage stage embryos, blastula, gastrula, early-bipinnaria, late-bipinnaria larvae or abnormal. Measurements were made at 7 times up to 72 h post-fertilisation, with the morphometrics of larvae measured in the 72-h sample. Acanthaster planci developed at temperatures between 19.4 and 33.2 °C, with a thermal window for development to the late-bipinnaria stage between 25.6 and 31.6 °C. Development rate, normal development and larval size were optimal at 28.7 °C, with development rates remaining relatively constant up to 31.6 °C. Rates of abnormality increased steadily (early embryonic stages) above 28.7 °C and was 100 % at temperatures approaching 33 °C. These experiments provide a more detailed insight into the response of A. planci developmental stages to temperature. The present day distribution of the species in eastern Australia overlap with the optimal thermal window for development to the late-bipinnaria stage (≈25–32 °C), implying a role of temperature in controlling population distributions and abundances. Despite this, short- or long-term temperature increases may not be a major modulator of the crown-of-thorns recruitment success, population dynamics and distribution in the future as no significant change in development rates, larval survival and growth occurred within this thermal window. Therefore, moderate (1–2 °C) increases in sea temperatures caused by El Niño or near-future ocean warming may not drive an increase in developmental and settlement success. Indeed, without any acclimation to warmer temperatures expected under near-future warming (+2 to 4 °C), climate change could ultimately reduce larval survival due to elevated mortality above the optimal development temperature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The use of aural surveys to estimate population parameters is widespread in avian studies. Despite efforts to increase the efficacy of this method, the potential for ecological context to bias population estimates remains largely unexplored. For example, food availability and nest predation risk can influence singing activity independent of density and, therefore, may bias aural estimates where these ecological factors vary systematically among habitats or other categories of ecological interest. We used a natural fire event in a mixed‐conifer forest that experienced variation in fire severity (low, intermediate, and high) to determine if aural surveys produce accurate density estimates of Dark‐eyed Juncos ( Junco hyemalis) independent of ecological context. During the first 2‐yr postfire, we censused junco populations in each burn type with intensive spot‐mapping and nest searching, locating 168 nests. Simultaneously, we conducted fixed‐radius point‐count surveys and estimated food availability and nest predation risk in each burn type to test whether ecological context may influence aural detection probability independent of actual density. We found no difference in nesting densities among patches burned at different severity. Arthropod food availability was inversely related to fire severity during the first postfire breeding season, but increased to higher levels across all severities during the second. In both years, aural detections were significantly greater in intermediate severity patches that consistently represented the habitat with the lowest nest predation risk. These results suggest that nest predation risk may significantly bias aural estimates of avian populations. Although traditional aural survey methods such as the Breeding Bird Survey measure habitat attributes, our findings highlight the difficulty in assessing relevant covariates in estimates of avian population. Future research must consider the potential for nest predation and other ecological factors to drive interannual or interhabitat variation in avian population estimates independent of true changes in population size.  相似文献

We investigated the usefulness of body temperature (Tb) as a guide to egg-laying in a monotreme mammal, the echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus, and attempted to quantify changes in Tb and relate them to specific reproductive events. Six female echidnas were implanted with temperature loggers and then radio-tracked in the wild for up to 6 years. In reproductive years there was a significant reduction in Tb variability 21.7±2.5 days after final arousal from hibernation, which coincided with the time at which the female entered the nursery burrow. Egg-laying occurred within 2 days of this Tb change which lasted an average of 43±4 days.  相似文献

The European Commission Habitats Directive requires that changes in the conservation status of designated species are monitored. Nocturnal and elusive species are difficult to count directly and thus population trajectories are inferred by variation in the incidence of field signs. Presence/absence techniques are, however, vulnerable to Type II errors (false negatives). The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), listed by the IUCN as ‘near threatened’, is monitored throughout Europe using the ‘Standard Otter Survey’ method. We explored the reliability of this approach by analysing species incidence at 1,229 sites throughout Ireland. Naïve species incidence was 72 % [95 % confidence interval (CI), 69–75 %] with variation affected significantly by survey team and, at running freshwater sites, the number of bridges present and rainfall during the month, and most notably during the 7 days, prior to survey. Rainfall had no effect on static freshwater sites or the coast. Marginal estimated mean species incidence derived from a GLM assuming the β coefficient of the survey team associated with the highest prevalence, no rainfall in the week prior to survey and sites that had multiple bridges, was 94 % [95 %CI 78–97 %]. We demonstrate that bias and error in binary wildlife surveys can have a major impact on a conservation assessment even when conducted on an apparently well-known species in a developed country with good infrastructure and a long history of similar ecological studies. Our results provide empirical evidence for further criticisms of the Standard Otter Survey method calling into question its value in monitoring changes in otter populations throughout Europe.  相似文献

The effects of scuba diving activities on coralligenous concretions builders in the Mediterranean Sea are reported for a non-marine protected area (non-MPA). Five erect bryozoan species, which are particularly vulnerable due to their fragile structure, were investigated: Adeonella calveti, Myriapora truncata, Pentapora fascialis, Reteporella grimaldii, and Smittina cervicornis. These species were sampled at frequently and rarely visited diving sites to the maximum depths reachable with the most common recreational diving certifications (i.e., 40 m). To do this, a non-destructive photographic sampling technique was used to minimize any impact on the benthic communities. For each sample, the number of colonies, their width, coverage, type of injury and degree of exposure were quantified using image analysis software. The number of species differed between the frequently and rarely visited diving sites, and frequently visited sites had significantly lower number of colonies and reduced colony width. Species-specific response to stress was associated with colony morphology and skeleton rigidity. Both the type of injury and colony position within the coralligenous habitat were affected by the presence of scuba divers. A linear model was proposed to analyse the response of bryozoans to scuba diving pressure. The results reported here suggest that P. fascialis and R. grimaldii could serve as robust species indicators of diving stress.  相似文献

Great tits, Parus major, display their white cheek patches to one another during intraspecific encounters. We measured the size of these patches and the regularity of their borders (immaculateness) as part of an investigation into their function as signals. Patch size was not significantly related to any of our measures of fitness, but male great tits with more immaculate cheek patches had significantly greater access to a safer feeding site in winter and produced heavier chicks in small woods. Females with more immaculate patches bred significantly earlier in 2 of the 3 years of the study in both large and small woods. We decreased the immaculateness of both sexes with dye and found that competition with other tits significantly increased their exposure to danger when feeding. Factors resulting in reduced immaculateness included ectoparasites, fighting with conspecifics, faster feather wear in young birds and the timing of the autumn moult. Selection for immaculateness by conspecifics may be one mechanism responsible for the evolution of regular head and body patterns in several species of birds and in other animals.  相似文献

The slow aggregation assay is generally used to study the functionality of cell–cell adhesion complexes. Single cells are seeded on a semisolid agar substrate in a 96-well plate and the cells spontaneously aggregate. We used HEK FLAG-MOP cells that stably overexpress the mu opioid receptor and the mu-opioid-receptor-selective agonists DAMGO and morphine to study whether other factors than functionality of cell–cell adhesions complexes can contribute to changes in the pattern of slow aggregation on agar. HEK FLAG-MOP cells formed small compact aggregates. In the presence of DAMGO and morphine, larger and fewer aggregates were formed in comparison to the vehicle control. These aggregates were localized in the center of the agar surface, whereas in the vehicle control they were dispersed over the substrate. However, in suspension culture on a Gyrotory shaker, no stimulation of aggregation was observed by DAMGO and morphine, showing that opioids do not affect affinity. A dissociation experiment revealed that HEK FLAG-MOP aggregates formed in the absence or presence of opioids are resistant to de-adhesion. We demonstrated that the larger aggregates are neither the result of cell growth stimulation by DAMGO and morphine. Since manipulations of the substrate such as increasing the agar concentration or mixing agar with agarose induced the same changes in the pattern of slow aggregation as treatment with opioids, we suggest that cell–substrate adhesion may be involved in opioid-stimulated aggregation.  相似文献
