The study was aimed at a deeper understanding of the interaction between the system of vertical posture control and the system of voluntary movement control based on the analysis of postural muscle activity components resulting from the action of the former or the latter system. For this purpose, a quick arm raise was performed in the standing and sitting positions with body fixation at different levels, when the task of maintaining a vertical posture was simplified or completely eliminated. Under these conditions, the muscle activity associated with posture control was supposed to change, while the activity of muscles raising the arm was supposed to remain invariable. The results showed that the simplification of the posture control resulted in a decrease or elimination of anticipatory changes in the activity of some muscles. However, most of the muscle activity variations were retained even in the sitting position, and these variations appeared simultaneously with the activity of muscles raising the arm. The so-called “anticipatory postural activity” during an arm raise in a normal standing position is supposed to consist of two components: an initial component reflecting the work of the posture control system and a later component reflecting the work of the movement control system. It is suggested that the planning of muscle activity and exchange of information between these two systems take place only before the beginning of the movement; after that, they act independently and in parallel.  相似文献

The sagittal and frontal components of the stabilogram were monitored in 14 healthy subjects standing on a rigid or pliant support under three different conditions of visual control: with the eyes opened (EO), with the eyes closed (EC), or in a virtual visual environment (VVE). Under the VVE conditions, the subjects looked at a three-dimensional image of elements of a room (a 3-D artificial room) that was generated by a computer and locked to the fluctuations of the body center of gravity (CG) so that the visual connection between body sway and shifts of the visual environment typical of normal visual conditions was reproduced. Frequency filtration of the fluctuations of the foot’s center of pressure (FCP) was used to isolate the movements of the vertical projection of the CG and determine the difference between these two variables. The changes in the variables (CG and FCP-CG) were estimated using spectral analysis followed by the calculation of the root mean square (RMS) amplitudes of their spectral fluctuations. In subjects standing on a rigid support, the RMS amplitudes of the spectra of both variables were the highest under the VVE and EC conditions and the lowest under the EO conditions. In subjects standing on a pliant support, body sway was considerably enhanced, which was accompanied by a different pattern of visual influences. The RMS values were the highest under the EC conditions and were lower by a factor of 2–2.5 under the EO and VVE conditions. Thus, it has been demonstrated that the cerebral structures controlling posture ignore the afferent input from the eyes under VVE conditions, if the subject is standing on a rigid support and the CG fluctuations are relatively small; however, this afferentation is efficiently used for maintaining the posture on a pliable support, when the body sway is substantially enhanced.  相似文献

The effectivity of the compensatory role of visual biofeedback in cases of decreased stability of upright posture has been analysed. The deterioration of stance was modelled by a subject standing on a soft surface and with additional weight load on the body. The influence of visual biofeedback was positive only for the compensation of decreased stability of upright posture caused by artificially increased body weight of the subject. The compensatory effectivity of visual biofeedback in stabilization of upright posture during stance on a soft surface was practically negligible. The results have shown that effective compensation of the destabilizing effect by visual biofeedback in human upright posture was possible only when the activity and efficiency of efferent-action part of the postural system remained unchanged.  相似文献

The balance control was studied in athletes with different degrees of expertise in sports: masters of sports (MSs, n = 18) and candidates for masters of sports (CMSs, n = 13). The balance function was assessed by means of a stabilographic system (Rhythm, Russia) in static tests, including the simple bipedal stance (BS) and squat (SQ) positions, as well as in dynamic tests, including Involute, evaluating the tracking movement and, Step Input, assessing the response of the whole body to a visuomotor task. It was found that MSs did not differ in the linear or angular velocity of oscillations of the center of pressure (CP) in the BS or SQ positions from CMSs with the same anthropometric data, PWC170, and trunk strength. MSs exhibited a relative dominance of low-frequency oscillations in spectral analysis in the BS test with the eyes open. In the Step Input test, MSs had a lower latent period of response and a greater speed and accuracy of the forward and backward body movements in response to the visual signals and exhibited a relative dominance of high-frequency oscillations. The results showed that MSs had an improved postural control, which was mainly expressed in the dynamic test for the speed and accuracy of the whole-body response to visual signals in the vertical posture.  相似文献

The problem of determination of the temporal patterns of control actions, which accomplish the process of the vertical posture stabilization, was considered. On the basis of stabilogram analysis, it was concluded that the temporal pattern of the trajectory components of pressure center (PC) motion consists of interval sequences. Motion velocity is practically constant within each interval. Transition to the following interval is accompanied by a spasmodic change not only in the velocity magnitude but also in its sign. It was shown that velocity constancy at the linear interval is the result of linear time change in control actions. A conclusion was drawn about the presence of two separate mechanisms realizing the process of stabilization of the vertical posture. They form independent control actions oriented in the frontal and sagittal planes.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that leopard frogs, Rana pipiens, use tongue prehension to capture small prey and jaw prehension to capture large prey. After hypoglossal nerve transection, the frogs fail to open their mouths when attempting to feed on small prey, but open their mouths and capture large prey. Here, we investigate how visual information about the prey and proprioceptive information from the tongue interact to influence the motor program choice. Using pieces of earthworm of various sizes, we found that Rana exhibits two different behavior patterns based on prey size. The frogs captured the 1.5-cm prey using tongue prehension, whereas 2.0-cm and larger prey were captured using jaw prehension. After hypoglossal transection, the frogs never opened their mouths when they tried to feed on 1.5-cm prey. When feeding on 3.0-cm and larger prey after transection, they always opened their mouths and captured the prey using jaw prehension. When offered 2.0-cm prey, they alternated randomly between opening and not opening the mouth. Therefore, deafferentation changed the pattern of motor program choice at the behavioral border. This implies that afferents from the tongue interact with visual input to influence motor program choice.  相似文献

It was earlier shown that ultraslow tilts of the support under quiet standing conditions evoke an unusual response reflecting the operation of compensatory mechanisms: postural sway is a superposition of postural oscillations typical of quiet standing and greater, slower inclinations of the body caused by the tilt. This may be explained by the presence of two hierarchical levels of upright posture control: real-time control compensates for small deviations of the body from the reference posture prescribed by presetting control. Mathematical simulation methods have been used to study the mechanisms of reference posture control. The results are compared with available experimental data. It is demonstrated that the reference posture can be corrected according to the gravitational vertical with the use of a kinesthetic reference alone. It is hypothesized that, when correcting the reference posture, the nervous system “assumes” the support to be immobile. The afferent input from sole pressure receptors is an important factor in reference posture correction. The advantages of the putative two-level control over control based on an explicit internal model are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 3 different warm-ups on vertical jump performance. The warm-ups included a 600-m jog, a 600-m jog followed by a dynamic stretching routine, and a 600-m jog followed by a proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) routine. A second purpose was to determine whether the effects of the warm-ups on vertical jump performance varied by gender. Sixty-eight men and women NCAA Division I athletes from North Dakota State University performed 3 vertical jumps on a Just Jump pad after each of the 3 warm-up routines. The subjects were split into 6 groups and rotated between 3 warm-up routines, completing 1 routine each day in a random order. The results of the 1-way repeated measures analysis of variance showed no significant differences in the combined (p = 0.927), men's (p = 0.798), or women's (p = 0.978) results. The results of this study showed that 3 different warm-ups did not have a significant affect on vertical jumping. The results also showed there were no gender differences between the 3 different warm-ups.  相似文献

The role of global variables of control, which take into account the dynamic state of the limb, is discussed. This article reviews recent findings on how forces are detected by sense organs of insect legs and how this information is integrated in control of posture and walking. These experiments have focused upon campaniform sensilla, receptors that detect forces as strains in the exoskeleton, and include studies of sensory discharges in freely moving animals and intracellular characterization of connectivity of afferent inputs in the central nervous system. These findings provide insights into how campaniform sensilla can contribute to the adjustment of motor outputs to changes in load. In this review we discuss (1) anatomy of the receptors and their activities in freely moving insects, (2) mechanisms by which inputs are incorporated into motor outputs and (3) the integration of sensory signals of diverse modalities. The discharges of some groups of receptors can encode body load when standing. Responses are also correlated with muscle-generated forces during specific times in walking. These activities can enhance motor outputs through reflexes and can affect the timing of motoneuron firing through inputs to pattern generating interneurons. Flexibility in the system is also provided by interactions of afferent inputs at several levels. These mechanisms can contribute to the adaptability of insect locomotion to diverse terrains and environments.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical model of stability and coordination of posture and locomotion, together with algorithms for continuous-time quadratic optimization of motion control. Explicit solutions to the Hamilton–Jacobi equation for optimal control of rigid-body motion are obtained by solving an algebraic matrix equation. The stability is investigated with Lyapunov function theory and it is shown that global asymptotic stability holds. It is also shown how optimal control and adaptive control may act in concert in the case of unknown or uncertain system parameters. The solution describes motion strategies of minimum effort and variance. The proposed optimal control is formulated to be suitable as a posture and movement model for experimental validation and verification. The combination of adaptive and optimal control makes this algorithm a candidate for coordination and control of functional neuromuscular stimulation as well as of prostheses. Background

Stochastic resonance is a nonlinear phenomenon whereby the addition of noise can improve the detection of weak stimuli. An optimal amount of added noise results in the maximum enhancement, whereas further increases in noise intensity only degrade detection or information content. The phenomenon does not occur in linear systems, where the addition of noise to either the system or the stimulus only degrades the signal quality. Stochastic Resonance (SR) has been extensively studied in different physical systems. It has been extended to human sensory systems where it can be classified as unimodal, central, behavioral and recently crossmodal. However what has not been explored is the extension of this crossmodal SR in humans. For instance, if under the same auditory noise conditions the crossmodal SR persists among different sensory systems.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using physiological and psychophysical techniques we demonstrate that the same auditory noise can enhance the sensitivity of tactile, visual and propioceptive system responses to weak signals. Specifically, we show that the effective auditory noise significantly increased tactile sensations of the finger, decreased luminance and contrast visual thresholds and significantly changed EMG recordings of the leg muscles during posture maintenance.

Conclusions/Significance

We conclude that crossmodal SR is a ubiquitous phenomenon in humans that can be interpreted within an energy and frequency model of multisensory neurons spontaneous activity. Initially the energy and frequency content of the multisensory neurons'' activity (supplied by the weak signals) is not enough to be detected but when the auditory noise enters the brain, it generates a general activation among multisensory neurons of different regions, modifying their original activity. The result is an integrated activation that promotes sensitivity transitions and the signals are then perceived. A physiologically plausible model for crossmodal stochastic resonance is presented.  相似文献
