A spiral packed-bed bioreactor inoculated with microorganisms obtained from activated sludge was used to conduct a feasibility study for phenol removal. The reactor was operated continuously at various phenol loadings ranging from 53 to 201.4 g m−3 h−1, and at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range of 20–180 min to estimate the performance of the device. The results indicated that phenol removal efficiency ranging from 82.9 to 100% can be reached when the reactor is operated at an HRT of 1 h and a phenol loading of less than 111.9 g m−3 h−1. At an influent phenol concentration of 201.4 g m−3, the removal efficiency increased from 18.6 to 76.9% with an increase in the HRT (20–120 min). For treatment of phenol in the reactor, the maximum biodegradation rate (V m) was 1.82 mg l−1 min−1; the half-saturation constant (K s), 34.95 mg l−1.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the performance of anaerobic fixed-film reactors with non-random support, for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater pre-treatment, including the influence of operating conditions. The work was carried out with two lab-scale reactors, one upflow and the other downflow, both equipped with vertical corrugated PVC tubes as support and a recirculation circuit. Both reactors were operated at 35°C.COD removal efficiencies ranging from 85% to 95% were achieved for organic loading rates of 8 kg COD m−3 d−1, while the highest organic loading rates (35 kg COD m−3 d−1) led to efficiencies of 55–75%. The reactors did not show destabilization after 12 h shock loads of 50 kg COD m−3 d−1 .Reactor stability was easily achieved under intermittent operation, with weekend breaks, after which the reactors rapidly returned to their optimal performance. The influences of the hydraulic retention time, temperature, the recirculation ratio and flow direction were also studied.  相似文献

The simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process for treating domestic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was operated with air flow rate of 500 L h?1 at 30 °C. Domestic wastewater was used as influent and Kaldnes rings were used as biomass carriers. In the beginning, long aeration condition was implemented to cultivate nitrification biofilm. Afterwards, intermittent aerobic condition was conducted during the cycle operation. The influent organic matter loading rate was improved by reducing the aeration and mixing times. Consequently, when the SNAD biofilm reactor was fed with the organic matter loading rate of 0.77 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the bio-bubbles appeared in the reactor and the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency decreased. After the organic matter loading rate decreased to 0.67 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the reactor showed excellent nitrogen removal performance. The TIN removal efficiency varied between 80 and 90 %, and the average TIN removal loading rate was 0.22 (kg TIN m?3 d?1). Additionally, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation confirmed that the anammox bacteria located in the inner part of the carriers. Finally, the microbial community analysis of 16S rRNA gene cloning revealed that the anammox bacteria on the carriers consisted of three main genuses: Candidatus Brocadia sp., Candidatus Brocadia caroliniensis and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida.  相似文献

Ozonation pretreatment was applied to palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to anaerobic digestion using the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). Ozonation increased BOD/COD by 37.9% with a COD loss of only 3.3%. At organic loads of 6.48-12.96 kg COD/m3/d, feeding with non-ozonated POME caused a system failure. The ozonated POME gave significantly higher TCOD removal at loadings 6.52 and 9.04 kg COD/m3/d but failed to sustain the operation at loading 11.67 kg COD/m3/d. Effects of cycle time (CT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were determined using quadratic regression model. The generated response surface and contour plot showed that at this high load conditions (6.52-11.67 kg COD/m3/d), longer HRT and shorter CT gave the ASBR higher organic removal efficiency and methane yield. The model was able to satisfactorily describe the relationship of these two key operating parameters.  相似文献

A combined system designed by converting the flow mixing chamber of an anaerobic filter into an UASB resulted in an increased efficiency of removal of organic matter of 92% and in a gas production of 4.64 l·l−1·d−1, at the highest organic loading rate tested compared with that of the unmodified anaerobic filter. Both reactors were tested using dairy industry wastewater at identical operating conditions at 30°C and organic loading rate between 1 to 8 g COD·l−1·d−1.  相似文献

Leachate from a municipal waste landfill site was treated using an activated sludge bioreactor, a fluidized bed biofilm reactor and a packed-bed column reactor (trickling filter). The leachate contained high organic matter (2.0–2.6 g/l of COD), high ammonium (300–700 mg/l) and sulphide (200–800 mg/l) concentrations, as well as low metal concentrations. The continuously operating reactors were employed to study the effects of TOC loading on the removal of TOC as well as on the nitrification and denitrification processes. Among the three biological treatment technologies investigated, the fluidized bed biofilm reactor was best with respect to removing ammonia and TOC. More than 90% of TOC and 99% of ammonia were removed when TOC loading was less than 0.5 kg/m3 × d. At a TOC loading of 4 kg/m3 × d, the removal of TOC and ammonia was 80% and 99%, respectively. In contrast, the treatment of leachate with the packed-bed reactor was successful in TOC removing only at TOC loading less than 0.3 kg/m3 × d (TOC elimination decreased from 86% at 0.06 kg/m3 × d to 60% at 0.3 kg/m3 × d). However, the reactor was active in nitrification even at a higher TOC loading (more than a 98% ammonia elimination at a TOC loading of 0.5 kg/m3 × d). Leachate was processed in the activated sludge reactor when TOC loading was less than 0.5 kg/m3 × d (with a removal of TOC and ammonia up to 83% and 99%, respectively). The activated sludge reactor was also effective in TOC removal at a higher TOC loading (e.g. a 74% TOC removal at a TOC loading of 1 kg/m3 × d), but for ammonia elimination, the activity continuously decreased (less than 60% ammonia removal at a TOC loading of 1 kg/m3 × d). Overloading in the activated sludge system was indicated by a high concentration of ammonia and nitrite in the effluent. In the packed bed reactor, overloading was characterized by a progressively incomplete TOC removal. No significant overloading was found in the fluidized bed reactor up to a TOC loading of 4 kg/m3 × d.  相似文献

Using alternative power sources to drive hydrogen production in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) is important to implementation of MEC technology. Herein, thermoelectric generators (TEG) were to power MECs using simulated waste heat. With the MEC anolyte as a cold source for TEG, current generation of the MEC increased to 2.46 ± 0.06 mA and hydrogen production reached 0.14 m3 m−3 d-1, higher than those of the TEG-MEC system without hydraulic connection (1.16 ± 0.07 mA and 0.07 ± 0.01 m3 m−3 d-1). A high recirculation rate of 30 mL min-1 doubled both current generation and hydrogen production with 10 mL min-1, benefited from a stronger cooling effect that increased the TEG voltage output. However, the optimal recirculation rate was determined as 20 mL min-1 because of comparable performance but potentially less energy requirement. Reducing anolyte hydraulic retention time to 4 h has increased hydrogen production to 0.25 ± 0.05 m3 m−3 d-1 but decreased organic removal efficiency to 69 ± 2%. Adding three more TEG units that captured more heat energy further enhanced hydrogen production to 0.36 m3 m−3 d-1. Those results have demonstrated a successful integration of TEG with MEC through both electrical and hydraulic connections for simultaneous wastewater treatment and energy recovery.  相似文献

An on-site pilot-scale static granular bed reactor (SGBR) system was evaluated for treating wastewater from a slaughterhouse in Iowa. The study evaluated SGBR reactor suitability for slaughterhose wastewater having high particulate COD concentration (7.9 ± 4.3 g COD/L) at 0.3–1.4 m3/m2/day of the surface loading rates. High organic removal efficiency (over 95% of TSS and VSS removal) was obtained due to the consistent treatability of SGBR system during operation at HRTs of 48, 36, 30, 24, and 20 h. The average effluent TSS, VSS, COD, soluble COD, and BOD5 concentrations were 84, 71, 301,197, and 87 mg/L, respectively. An effective backwash procedure was performed once every 7–14 days to waste a portion of the accumulated solids in the system. This procedure limited the increase in hydraulic head loss and maintained the system stability. COD removal efficiencies greater than 95% were achieved at organic loading rates ranging from 0.77 to 12.76 kg/m3/day.  相似文献

Aerobic digestion of primary and secondary sludges was studied in airlift bioreactors at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. The experimental studies were conducted with a laboratory U-shape airlift reactor (operating volume 23 liters) and in a pilot U-shape airlift reactor of 1150 liters operating volume. In the laboratory reactor, with cold (6°C) and concentrated (3–4% solids) feed of primary and secondary municipal sludge, a 30% volatile suspended solids (VSS) reduction was achieved with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2·5 days. A VSS loading rate of 8·2 kg VSS/m3/day was achieved. This loading is comparable to that obtained in a pure-oxygen sparged, mixed reactor. In the pilot-plant reactor at mesophilic temperature (31–33°C), a VSS loading rate of 7·9 kg VSS/m3/day and a VSS reduction of 40% were achieved with a HRT of 4 days.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic biodegradation of a mixed feed composed of vinasses and cutting oil wastewater (COW) in a laboratory upflow anaerobic fixed-film reactor (UAFF) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing the percentage of cutting oil wastewater in the feed. The UAFF reactor was initially started-up with vinasses as the only carbon source at an organic loading rate of 22.3 kg COD/m3 day and HRT of 0.8 days using porous particles as the support (SIRAN). The percentage of organic matter composed of vinasses was subsequently reduced while increasing the amount of cutting oil until 100% of cutting oil wastewater was added in the feed. Four stages were considered in the study (0, 42.4, 66.6 and 100% COW). HRT was adjusted in order to maintain an approximately constant organic loading rate applied to the system. Under theses conditions, the UAFF reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation with hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range 0.8–0.15 days and organic loading rates (OLR) between 22.3 and 14.9 kg COD/m3 day in order to evaluate the treatment capacity of the system. The COD removal efficiency was found to be 87% COD and 94.6% TOC in the reactor when treating vinasses at 22.3 kg COD/m3 day. The volumetric methane level produced in the digester reached 0.45 m3/m3 day. After an operating period of 120 days, the reactor was fed with cutting oil wastewater (COW) as the only source of carbon. An OLR of 16.7 kg COD/m3 day was achieved with 85.8% COD removal efficiency (58.1%TOC) in the experimental UAFF reactor. Under these conditions the volumetric methane produced in the digester was negligible.Hence, COW can be removed, if not degraded, by anaerobic treatment in the presence of a biodegradable co-substrate. Wine vinasses degradation creates conditions for non-biological removal of COW constituents. More studies are necessary in order to test the mechanisms of organic removal when biodegradation apparently had ceased. Also, toxicity assays of COW are necessary to evaluate the toxicity to the methanogenic community.  相似文献

In order to maximize the efficiency of methane fermentation on short-chain fatty acids, growth media containing acetic acid and butyric acid as major carbon sources were supplied to a thermophilic down-flow anaerobic packed-bed reactor. The organic loading rate (OLR) to the reactor ranged from 0.2 to 169 kg-dichromate chemical oxygen demand(CODcr)/m3-reactor/day, corresponding to a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of between 1.4 h and 20 days. Stable methane production was maintained at HRTs as short as 2 h (OLR=120 kg-CODcr/m3/day), with the short-chain fatty acids in the feed almost completely removed during the process. The apparent substrate removal efficiency, determined from the total CODcr values in the influent and effluent, was 75% at short HRTs. However, the actual substrate removal efficiency must have been greater than 75%, since a fraction of substrate was also utilized in microbial cell synthesis, and these cells were part of the measured total CODcr.  相似文献

In recent years considerable effort has been made in the Netherlands toward the development of a more sophisticated anaerobic treatment process, suitable for treating low a strength wastes and for applications at liquid detention times of 3–4 hr. The efforts have resulted in new type of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process, which in recent 6 m3 pilot-plant experiments has shown to be capable of handling organic space loads of 15–40 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)·m?3/day at 3–8 hr liquid detention times. In the first 200 m3 full-scale plant of the UASB concept, organic space loadings of up to 16 kg COD·m?3/day could be treated satisfactorily at a detention times of 4 hr, using sugar beet waste as feed. The main results obtained with the process in the laboratory as well as in 6 m3 pilot plant and 200 m3 full-scale experiments are presented and evaluated in this paper. Special attention is given to the main operating characteristics of the UASB reactor concept. Moreover, some preliminary results are presented of laboratory experiments concerning the use of the USB reactor concept for denitrification as well as for the acid formation step in anaerobic treatment. For both purposes the process looks feasible because very satisfactory results with respect to denitrification and acid formation can be achieved at very high hydraulic loads (12 day?1) and high organic loading rates, i.e., 20 kg COD·m?3/day in the denitrification and 60–80 kg COD·m?3/day in the acid formation experiments.  相似文献

Anaerobic bioenergy production processes including fermentative biohydrogen (BioH2), anaerobic digestion (AD) and bioelectrochemical system have been investigated for converting municipal waste or various biomass feedstock to useful energy carriers. However, the performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) fed on the effluent from a two-stage biogas production process has not yet been investigated extensively in continuous reactor operation on complex substrates. In this study we have investigated the extent to which a microbial fuel cell (MFC) can reduce COD and recover further energy from the effluent of a two-stage biohydrogen and biomethane system. The performance of a four-module tubular MFC was determined at six different organic loadings (0.036–6.149 g sCOD L−1 d−1) in terms of power generation, COD removal efficiency, coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy conversion efficiency (ECE). A power density of 3.1 W m−3 was observed at the OLR = 0.572 g sCOD L−1 d−1, which resulted in the highest CE (60%) and ECE (0.8%), but the COD removal efficiency decreased at higher organic loading rates (35.1–4.4%). The energy recovery was 92.95 J L−1 and the energy conversion efficiency, based on total influent COD was found to be 0.48–0.81% at 0.572 g sCOD L−1 d−1. However, the energy recovery by the MFC is only reported for a four-module reactor and improved performance can be expected with an extended module count, as chemical energy remained available for further electrogenesis.  相似文献

Anammox process has attracted considerable attention in the recent years as an alternative to conventional nitrogen removal technologies. In this study, a column type reactor using a novel net type acrylic fiber (Biofix) support material was used for anammox treatment. The Biofix reactor was operated at a temperature of 25°C (peak summer temperature, 31.5°C). During more than 340 days of operation for synthetic wastewater treatment, the nitrogen loading rates of the reactor were increased to 3.6 kg-N/m3/d with TN removal efficiencies reaching 81.3%. When the reactor was used for raw anaerobic sludge digester liquor treatment, an average TN removal efficiency of 72% was obtained with highest removal efficiency of 81.6% at a nitrogen loading rate of 2.2 kg-N/m3/d. Results of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) quantification revealed that protein was the most abundant component in the granular sludge and was found to be almost twice than that in the sludge attached to the biomass carriers. The anammox granules in the Biofix reactor illustrated a dense morphology substantiated by scanning electron microscopy and EPS results. The results of DNA analyses indicated that the anammox strain KSU-1 might prefer relatively low nutrient levels, while the anammox strain KU2 strain might be better suited at high nutrient concentration. Other types of bacteria were also identified with the potential of consuming dissolved oxygen in the influent and facilitating survival of anammox bacteria under aerobic conditions.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic anaerobic biodegradation of wine distillery wastewater (vinasses) in a laboratory fluidised bed reactor (AFB) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing organic loading rate on the efficiency of AFB and to report on its steady-state performance. Moreover, in order to evaluate treatment efficiency and to investigate fermentation kinetics in an AFB reactor, experimental data were used to estimate the ‘active biomass’ concentration using an autocatalytic kinetic model proposed in this paper, since viable biomass in AFB reactors is very difficult to measure experimentally. The AFB reactor was subjected to a program of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention time (HRTs) of 2.5–0.37 days and organic loading rate (OLRs) up to 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day in order to evaluate its treatment capacity. The AFB reactor was initially operated with organic loading rate of 5.88 kgCOD/m3/day and HRT of 2.5 days. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was found to be 96.5% in the reactor while the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 1.08 m3/m3digester/day. Over 94 days operating period, an OLR of 32 kgCOD/m3/day at a food-to-micro-organisms (F:M) ratio of 0.55 kgCOD/kgVSatt/day was achieved with 81.5% COD removal efficiency in the experimental AFB reactor. At this moment, the methane content of biogas produced in the digester reached 9.0 m3/m3digester/day. The proposed kinetic model is able to estimate kinetic constants of the biodegradation process: non-biodegradable substrate (Snb) and active adhered biomass concentration (Xa). The parameters of the model were obtained by the curve-fitting method to the proposed kinetic model using the COD as substrate of the anaerobic process and assuming a maximum specific μmax: 0.72 per day. The comparison of the measured concentration of volatile attached solids (VSatt) with the estimated ‘active’ biomass concentration indicated that extremely high ‘active biomass’ concentrations can be maintained in the system because biofilm thickness is limited by the liquid flow rate applied. This is due to the fact that the anaerobic fluidised bed system retains the growth support medium in suspension by drag forces exerted by upflowing wastewater, and the distribution of biomass holdup (in the form of a biofilm) is thus relatively uniform.  相似文献

The effect of hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the bioremediation of municipal wastewater using a pilot scale subsurface horizontal flow constructed treatment wetland (HFCTW) vegetated with Cyprus papyrus was investigated. Different HLRs were applied to the treatment system namely 0.18, 0.10, and 0.07 m3/m2. d with corresponding HRTs of 1.8, 3.2, and 4.7 days, respectively. The flow rate was 8 m3/d, and the average organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.037 kg BOD/m3/d. Results showed that the performance of the HFCTW was linearly affected by decreasing the HLR and increasing the HRT. The highest treatment efficiency was achieved at HRT (4.7 days) and HLR (0.07 m3/m2. d). The percentage reductions of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS) were 86%, 87%, and 80%, respectively. Satisfactory nutrient removal was obtained. Also, removal of 2–3 logs of bacterial indicators of pollution was achieved. The dry biomass of Cyperus was 7.7 kg/m2 and proved to be very efficient in nitrification processes due to high diversity of the roots that increase the treatment surface area.  相似文献

Three parallel laboratory reactors, R1, R2 and R3, received food industry wastewater: R1 unadulterated; R2 supplemented with calcium and phosphate; R3 supplemented with ferric chloride and traces of nickel and cobalt. Reactors were packed with active granular sludge from a large scale pilot reactor treating the same wastewater. Addition of calcium and phosphate was found to be detrimental to the granule formation at naturally established reactor pH = 6·9–7·4 in R2 while iron promoted granulation in R3. Conditions of upflow velocities of 1·5–6 m h−1, rapid increase of loads up to 15 kg COD m−3 day−1 and ratios of recycle to raw waste feed of 20:1–80:1 were imposed on all reactors. The granules in R1 and R2 disintegrated, from 70–100 g liter−1 VSS to a flocculant sludge at 1·5–3 g liter−1. In spite of such severe washout, reactors R1 and R2 were able to maintain a steady COD removal of over 90% at a load of 10kg m−3 day−1. R3 retained a VSS concentration around 100 g liter−1 and maintained COD removal at over 95%. R3 exhibited a more stable performance and was less vulnerable to the shock treatment to which all reactors were subjected.  相似文献

Experiments have been performed to investigate the nitrogen removal performance in a novel combined biofilm reactor using synthetic wastewater. In the reactor, one cubic box was separated by two baffles into three zones: aerobic zone, buffering zone and anoxic zone. Nitrification and denitrification were supposed to be mainly accomplished in the aerobic and anoxic zones, respectively. When the influent total nitrogen (TN) and organic carbon loadings were averaged at 0.093 and 0.40 kg/m3/d, 84% TN removal efficiency was achieved by adjusting the aeration rate and the configuration of the reactor. Continuous experimental results demonstrated that NH3-N removal efficiency increased by adjusting the clapboards of the reactor at a certain aeration rate. Energy produced by aeration was used for liquid recycle, so TN could be more efficiently removed at lower cost in this reactor.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the organic loading rate on the performance of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating olive mill effluent (OME), based on the following indicators: (i) chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency; and (ii) effluent variability (phenol, suspended solids, volatile fatty acids, and pH stability). The UASB reactor was operated under different operational conditions (OLRs between 0.45 and 32 kg COD/m3·day) for 477 days. The results demonstrated that the UASB reactor could tolerate high influent COD concentrations. Removal efficiencies for the studied pollution parameters were found to be as follows: COD, 47∼92%; total phenol, 34∼75%; color, 6∼46%; suspended solids, 34∼76%. The levels of VFAs in the influent varied between 310 and 1,750 mg/L. Our measurements of the VFA levels indicated that some of the effluent COD could be attributed to VFAs (principally acetate, butyrate, iso-butyrate, and propionate) in the effluent, which occurred at levels between 345 and 2,420 mg/L. As the OLRs were increased, more VFAs were measured in the effluent. A COD removal efficiency of 90% could be achieved as long as OLR was kept at a level of less than 10 kg COD/m3·day. However, a secondary treatment unit for polishing purposes is necessary to comply with discharge standards.  相似文献

This study aims at evaluating the performance of a two-chambered continuously fed microbial fuel cell with new Ti–TiO2 electrodes for bioelectricity generation from young landfill leachate at varying strength of wastewater (1–50 COD g/L) and hydraulic retention time (HRT, 0.25–2 days). The COD removal efficiency in the MFC increased with time and reached 45 % at full-strength leachate (50 g/L COD) feeding. The current generation increased with increasing leachate strength and decreasing HRT up to organic loading rate of 100 g COD/L/day. The maximum current density throughout the study was 11 A/m2 at HRT of 0.5 day and organic loading rate of 67 g COD/L/day. Coulombic efficiency (CE) decreased from 57 % at feed COD concentration of 1 g/L to less than 1 % when feed COD concentration was 50 g/L. Increase in OLR resulted in increase in power output but decrease in CE.  相似文献
