We describe watershed-scale habitat associations of three Cantharellus species with respect to stand age. During the 1998 autumn fruiting season we collected chanterelle sporocarps from 18 forest stands in and adjacent to the H.J. Andrews experimental forest in the central Cascade Mountains of Oregon. Sampled stands represented two age categories: old growth (350+ y) and 40–60-y-old second growth naturally regenerated from clear-cut harvest. Old growth and second growth stands were spatially paired to reduce the chance of spurious habitat relationships caused by unmeasured correlated variables. We found stand age to be a good predictor of the distribution of C. subalbidus and C. formosus, but only marginally useful for predicting the occurrence of C. cascadensis. The odds that a randomly located chanterelle sporocarp will be C. subalbidus, compared to other chanterelles, are 3–23.5 times higher in old growth than in second growth. Alternatively, there is only a 4–38 % chance that a randomly located sporocarp will be C. formosus in old growth. C. cascadensis was found to be uncommon throughout the study area and showed no significant habitat associations. The abundance of C. cascadensis increased substantially with decreasing elevation indicating that landscape features other than stand age may be more useful in predicting its occurrence.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this study was (a) to analyse natural Fagus sylvatica L. s.l. regeneration in low elevation stands located in the central part of Evros region in northeastern Greece in relation to factors such as site productivity, type of silvicultural treatment and regeneration origin and (b) to determine whether or not sprout origin regeneration is significant for the maintenance of beech stands. One hundred and twenty plots (3 m × 3 m) were established in areas where thinnings and regeneration fellings had taken place, and in two site productivity regimes. In each plot, the number of beech seedlings, saplings, and stump or root sprouts (regeneration plants) with a height of up to 3 m was counted, and their height measured. Our findings indicate that even though reproduction by seed is the predominant regeneration mechanism in our stands, in the medium productivity sites sprouts represent a significant percentage of the total number of plants. Moreover, sprouting functions as a mechanism of maintenance of beech stands in medium productivity sites. During the regeneration fellings practised in this area, it is advisable to cut the seedlings and saplings of the advanced regeneration in order to supplement the seed-derived plants with seedling sprouts.  相似文献

以关帝山区8种林分密度(128、240、320、400、480、560、640和720株·hm-2)华北落叶松纯林为研究对象,分析了不同密度下华北落叶松天然更新优劣及其影响因子。结果表明: 更新指数随林分密度增大先升高后降低,中密度(400~560株·hm-2)林分更新效果明显优于过疏和过密林分;林下光环境、草本植物及凋落物对落叶松更新有双重作用,光照过强、草本植物盖度过大或凋落物过厚不利于林下更新,土壤有机质可使土壤质地松软、水分含量充足并形成低磷高氮环境促进林分更新;各因子对更新指数的影响依次为:土壤含水量(0.798)>全氮(0.621)>凋落物厚度(-0.597)>土壤孔隙度(0.504)>土壤有机质(0.493)>全磷(-0.404)>林下总光照(-0.274)>草本植物盖度(-0.021)。在后续森林经营中,可通过抚育间伐或补植将林分密度控制在480株·hm-2左右,并适当清理林下凋落物,改善土壤条件,促进华北落叶松天然更新。  相似文献

Invasive species can increase fire frequency and intensity, generating favorable conditions for their self-perpetuation. Mediterranean south-central Chile may be especially prone to the effects of invasive species on fire regimes because it is less adapted to fire and it contains a highly endemic flora. Teline monspessulana (L.) K. Koch (syn. Cytisus monspessulanus L.; Genista monspessulana (L.) L.A.S. Johnson) is an introduced shrub that forms monotypic stands or is present as an understory species in native forests as well as in forestry plantations. Dense T. monspessulana stands are completely destroyed by fire, generating the conditions for it seeds to germinate and establish an abundant regeneration, with up to 900 plants/m2. We report key evidence on abundance and biomass in adult stands, and patterns of seed bank and regeneration after fire in stands of T. monspessulana around the city of Concepción, Chile. We estimated living biomass in pure stands and underneath Eucalyptus plantations. In burned areas, we assessed T. monspessulana seed bank and studied regeneration patterns. We found that T. monspessulana densities reaches 52,778 plants/ha and 8.92 ton/ha in pure stands and 34,223 plants/ha and 2.31 ton/ha underneath Eucalyptus plantations. T. monspessulana generates small caliper fuel and acts as a ladder-fuel. Large soil seed banks allow for abundant regeneration after fire, with mean densities of 877,111 plants/ha, but an overall mortality of 37.2% in the first year after the fire. The high values of regeneration compared to final densities in adult stands suggest that density-dependent mortality. Our results indicate that T. monspessulana regeneration is not only favored by fires, but also that the species creates favorable conditions for intense and continuous fires, both under pure conditions, but also associated to exotic tree plantations. To understand the implications of positive feedbacks between invaders and fire, we recommend focusing in the mechanisms by which they increases fuel accumulation and fuel flammability, and how higher fire frequency and intensity favors invasive species recruitment over native species. Comprehension of this dynamics will allow for better management and control of these invasions which have major ecological, economical and social implications.  相似文献

沈阳清墓木质葬具的树种鉴定及生态环境的指示潜力   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
古墓葬器所用木材是我们了解当时植被、气候以及社会状况的重要材料。本文利用木材解剖学和树木年代学方法,对沈阳浑南水家村墓葬群出土的木质葬具进行树种识别与树木年轮定年研究。结果表明: 16个木质葬具样本中有7个为松科松属油松木材,有8个为松科落叶松属木材,很可能为长白落叶松,有1个为槭树科槭树属木材。这些树种至今在辽宁地区仍广泛分布,说明该地区森林结构(树种组成)相对稳定,在一定程度上反映了当时气候与现在相似。也表明清代盛京(今沈阳)地区平民墓葬木质葬具所用木材存在区域性的植物地理特征,并反映出当时的生产力发展水平,即均是低成本、易获得的乡土树种,且这些木材以针叶树为主,也有少量阔叶树。这些木材很可能来源于沈阳当地或辽东山区森林,浑河水道是木材运至沈阳的重要途径。部分油松和落叶松葬具木材可以较好地交叉定年,确定树木生长年代在1680s—1770s(清朝早期至中期)。这些样本的年轮宽度变化具有较好的一致性和较高的气候敏感度,反映出区域气候环境的一致性。这些木质葬具对清朝早期至中期的气候条件具有一定的指示潜力。  相似文献

The relative pollen productivity (RPP) of Pinus cembra, Larix, Picea, Gramineae, and Cyperaceae was estimated for the Upper Engadine area, an inner-alpine sub-continental valley in SE Switzerland lying above 1800 m a.s.l. The influx of pollen originating from lowlands was assumed constant between the investigated sites and could thus be used to establish relative pollen accumulation rates (rPAR) as a basis for further calculations. Wind above the canopy was assumed as the major mode of pollen transport and the effect of different wind speeds was tested. In order to evaluate the results pollen percentage values were simulated and compared with the empirical data. The method is sufficiently accurate for evaluation of spatially-explicit vegetation models, although the low number of sites eludes robust statistical testing.  相似文献

Soil charcoal is an indicator of Holocene fires as well as a palaeoecological signature of pre-Colombian land use in Neotropical rain forests. To document rain forest fire history, we examined soil charcoal patterns in continuous old-growth forests along an elevational transect from sea level to the continental divide on the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica. At 10 elevations we sampled 1-ha plots, using 16 cores/ha to collect 1.5-m deep soil samples. We found charcoal in soils at every elevation, with total dry mass ranging from 3.18 g/m2 at 2000-m elevation to as much as 102.7 g/m2 at 300 m. Soil charcoal is most abundant at the wettest lowland sites (60–500 m) and less at montane elevations (> 1000 m) where there is less rainfall. Between 30- and 90-cm soil depth, soil charcoal is present consistently and every 1-ha plot has charcoal evidence for multiple fire events. Radiocarbon dates range from 23,240 YBP at 1750-m elevation to 140 YBP at 2600 m. Interestingly, none of the charcoal samples from 2600 m are older than 170 yr, which suggests that forests near the continental divide are relatively young replacement stands that have re-established since the most recent localized volcanic eruption on Volcán Barva. We propose that these old-growth forests have been disturbed infrequently but multiple times as a consequence of anthropogenic and natural fires.  相似文献

The cumulative effect of many local forest disturbances can be estimated from an analysis of forest distribution at the scale of the entire landscape. To gauge the regional impact of forest clearance and regeneration, a history of forest cover was compiled for the twentieth century in the hinterland of a large city (Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.). Forest distribution and character were described by point sampling of historical aerial photographs. Environmental features were measured on visits to sample points in the field. Regional forest coverage has grown from c . 5% in 1890 to 22% in 1990. Most modern stands are <60 years old; only 2.5% of the modern landscape is in forest more than 100 years old. Since 1890, patterns of clearance and regeneration have caused a proportional shift in forest cover from uplands to lowlands and flood plains. Older stands are found on rock fields and steep slopes, indicating abandonment from agriculture according to the quality of local sites. Residential development has been concentrated in uplands, precluding regeneration of forest in that landscape position. In general, land use turnover reflects the character of the local site; there is no evidence of region-wide gradients of regeneration or clearance. Modern forest is concentrated along steep-sided stream valleys and away from roads. The great majority of forest lies within 50 m of a forest margin placing it in the microclimatic and vegetational edge zone. Although most forest is within 200 m of a residence, pedestrian traffic appears to have had only a minor impact in the biological community. By contrast, widespread species impoverish- ment is suggested by the overwhelming youthfulness of modern forest and the low degree of connectedness of forest within the landscape. Management for biological conservation should focus on protection of remnant primary forest, rather than relying on succession to restock secondary stands.  相似文献

研究张广才岭林区未经人为干扰的(自然恢复次生林)和择伐后20年(择伐经营次生林)的2种紫椴次生林林分的乔木树种幼苗的分布格局及其种间关联性。结果表明: 阳性软阔叶和阴性树种幼苗在自然恢复次生林中重要值分别为7.9和64.5,在择伐经营次生林中为3.9和68.9;自然恢复次生林和择伐经营次生林中乔木树种幼苗的空间分布点格局分别在0~18 m和0~15 m尺度内呈聚集分布。自然恢复次生林中,14~45 m尺度上树种对多呈负相关;而择伐经营次生林中,所有尺度上的树种对多呈无相关性。在择伐经营次生林中,更新层中有57%的紫椴幼苗与其他乔木幼苗的树种对在大尺度上(31~45 m)呈负相关,在自然恢复次生林中该比例大于60%。在择伐经营次生林中,色木槭幼苗与其他乔木幼苗的树种对在更多尺度上(6~45 m)主要呈负相关,自然恢复次生林中的色木槭幼苗与其他乔木幼苗的树种对多在小尺度上(0~5 m)呈正相关,在大尺度上(31~45 m)无相关性。择伐加快了紫椴次生林未来的演替速度,一定程度上使得乔木树种幼苗在更大距离尺度上呈现出随机分布状态,并促使林分中乔木树种幼苗的种间关系更加协调,调整了紫椴种群幼苗种间的空间竞争关系。2个林分均处在演替进程中,在今后的林分管理中,应适当采取人工经营措施以促进林分更新及群落的恢复。  相似文献

Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. forests of the southern Appalachian Mountains are currently facing imminent decline induced by a nonnative insect pest, the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand). To effectively manage these forest systems now and in the future, land managers need baseline data on forest structure and dynamics prior to large-scale Tsuga canadensis mortality. Most of our knowledge concerning the dynamics of Tsuga canadensis forests comes from more northern locations such as the Great Lakes region and New England and, therefore, may not pertain to the ecological systems found within the southern Appalachian Mountains. We examined the structure and canopy dynamics of four Tsuga canadensis forest stands within the Cataloochee watershed, in the far eastern part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). We characterized the environmental settings and vertical forest layers, as well as the diameter and age-structures of each Tsuga canadensis forest stand. These environmental and structural data showed that there were indeed differences between forest stands with and without successful Tsuga canadensis regeneration. The two forest stands exhibiting successful Tsuga canadensis regeneration were located above 1,000 m in elevation on well-drained, moderately steep slopes and had the greatest canopy openness. Structural data from these two forest stands indicated a history of more continuous Tsuga canadensis regeneration. We also constructed disturbance chronologies detailing the history of canopy response to disturbance events and related these to Tsuga canadensis regeneration within each forest stand. Student t-tests adjusted for unequal variances indicated significant differences in the number of release events per tree between forest stands with and without successful Tsuga canadensis regeneration. While forest stands with successful Tsuga canadensis regeneration were more frequently disturbed by minor to major canopy disturbances, events of moderate intensity were found to be most significant in terms of regeneration. These data will be of value to land managers maintaining stands of Tsuga canadensis where treatment for hemlock woolly adelgid infestation has been successful. In areas where treatment is impractical or unsuccessful, land managers will be able to use these data to restore Tsuga canadensis forests after the wave of hemlock woolly adelgid induced mortality has passed. 间伐是人工林经营的重要措施,磷是森林生态系统的限制性养分元素之一,但间伐对土壤磷素的影响尚不明确.本研究采用Tissen改良的Hedley磷分级体系对土壤样品进行连续浸提,研究不同间伐强度[对照,未间伐;轻度间伐,15%;中度间伐,35%;重度间伐,50%]下山西太岳山好地方林场华北落叶松人工林表层土壤(0~10 cm)磷组分特征及其影响因素.结果表明: 与对照相比,中度间伐显著增强了土壤总无机磷含量;轻度和中度间伐显著增强了Resin-Pi、NaHCO3-Pi、NaHCO3-Po、NaOH-Pi、微生物生物量磷和土壤酸性磷酸酶活性,显著降低了NaOH-Po含量;间伐对土壤全磷、总有机磷、稳定态磷(HCl-Pi、浓HCl-Pi和浓HCl-Po)和闭蓄态磷(Residual-P)的影响不显著.土壤有机碳含量、含水率、土壤微生物和酸性磷酸酶活性是影响土壤磷素有效性的重要因子.中度间伐能提高华北落叶松人工林土壤磷素的有效性.  相似文献

Summary In sub-alpine forests of Northeast America and Japan pure stands of trees in the genusAbies exhibit wave regeneration. Opportunities for recruitment in such forests are confined to a window in time and space that coincides with the death of an even-aged cohort of adult trees. I suggest that the coincidence of this recruitment window with the death of adults at a predictable age should select for convergence between age at first reproduction and age at death. Ultimately this would lead to the evolution of semelparity. The available evidence supports this hypothesis for wave-regeneratedAbies populations in Japan. A field test of the hypothesis is also suggested.  相似文献

Pollen profiles, based cores taken in Lake Kahala and from the adjoining mire, were used to establish general vegetation history and to reconstruct the extent and types of land-use over most of the Holocene. Modern pollen deposition was studied using moss polsters and the results were used in the interpretation of the fossil pollen data in terms of former land-use practices. The modern-day samples are from settlements, hay meadow and pasture, and overgrown pasture. Indications of human activity can be traced back to the Stone Age. At ca. 6400 cal. B.C., the first indications of possible woodland utilisation by humans are recorded. This may have involved grazing within the forests. From 4200 cal. B.C. onwards, animal husbandry with changing intensity was practised. Arable farming, involving cereals, was introduced to the area at ca. 1800 cal. B.C., but it was only at ca. 500 cal. B.C. that it assumed an important role in the farming economy.Secale cereale (rye) was introduced during the Roman Iron Age, intensive rye cultivation started at the end of the Iron Age, at ca. cal. A.D. 800. Ever increasing farming pressures triggered the formation of openalvars. Open landscape similar to that of today has persisted, with minor forest regeneration phases, since at least 500 cal. B.C.  相似文献

Summary The mechanism of coexistence of the dominant firs Abies veitchii and A. mariesii is described in relation to regeneration patterns for climax subalpine forests of the northern Yatsugatake Mountains, central Honshu, Japan. Two mature stand types, pure conifer stands of Abies spp., and mixed stands of Abies spp. and hardwoods (mainly the birch Betula ermanii), are distinguished. Pure stands are likely to show simultaneous decay, followed by evenaged regeneration of stand-floor seedlings (<20 cm tall), Rapidly growing A. veitchii dominates over A. mariesii in this type of regeneration, which is occasionally invaded by light-demanding Betula. In constrast, mixed stands degenerate rather slowly, followed by the regeneration of Abies from the bank of suppressed saplings (>20 cm tall), which persist only in mixed stands. The more shade-tolerant A. mariesii is supeior in this type of regeneration, while Betula does not succeed, and mixed stands change to pure stands with time. The fact that two patterns of Abies regeneration occur in a certain ratio in the forest is what enables the two Abies species to coexist. A simple dynamical system model supports this conclusion.  相似文献

Size and age structure analysis, dated past disturbances, treefall replacement patterns, and spatial pattern analysis were used to reconstruct the developmental history of two old-growth Nothofagus fusca/N. menziesii stands, South Island, New Zealand. Diameter and height class distributions suggested that N. menziesii was replacing N. fusca, however, stand history reconstruction analysis showed that both species had regenerated intermittently after small-scale disturbances. Although large-scale disturbances such as blowdowns may occasionally generate even-aged stands, gap-phase regeneration maintains the forests in compositional equilibrium. In the absence of other competing tree species and understorey plants the two species appear to coexist by way of different life history strategies, where one species (N. menziesii) has low juvenile mortality and the other (N. fusca) has faster height growth rates and greater longevity and adult survivorship.  相似文献

Large, infrequent natural disturbances have been proposed as a key component in determining the distribution and abundance of Nothofagus in southern Andean temperate forests. In this study, a comparison of influences of small-to-intermediate-sized natural disturbances and effects of selective logging on the establishment and growth of Nothofagus forests in south-central Chile are synthesized with the results of other forest studies to develop general hypotheses on the regeneration dynamics of southern Chilean Nothofagus alpina forests. A synthesis is given for regeneration pattern in the abundance of 18 temperate rain forests in the Andean Range, Chile. The study aimed to determine the role of life history differences in promoting coexistence of the five main tree species (N. alpina, N. dombeyi, N. pumilio, N. macrocarpa and Laurelia philippiana) in N. alpina-dominated forests. Age data reported for N. alpina, a shade mid-tolerant emergent tree in the temperate rain forests of southern Chile, indicate maximum lifespans > 650 years, figures unprecedented for N. alpina. In low elevation stands, N. alpina coexists with broad-leaved evergreen tree species, such as L. philippiana, L. sempervirens, Persea lingue, and in these stands an intermittent establishment of Nothofagus occurred and appeared to be most dependent on small-to-intermediate disturbances. In high-elevation stands, in contrast, Nothofagus establishment was less dependent on disturbance, regeneration being much more continuous even in the absence of canopy openings. The forests studied provide another example of the general pattern of increasing dependence of Nothofagus on disturbance towards the more productive end of the environmental gradients. As a long-lived pioneer and despite its dependence on disturbance in lowland sites, N. alpina has been subject to selection for complementary growth, adult survivorship, and mid-tolerance to shade. Thus, interspecific differences in juvenile and adult life history characteristics of N. alpina and its competitors may be sufficient to maintain its persistence in the landscape. In conclusion, this study of population structures and replacement patterns provides a comprehensive picture on our understanding of regeneration dynamics and trait differentiation in southern temperate forests by recognizing both the influences of environmental gradients (i.e., altitude) on competing species and the disturbance regimes. This work addresses the structural characterization of Juniperus oxycedrus-dominated woodlands in west-central Spain, as well as the analysis of the regeneration of this species in the presence of other species (mainly Quercus ilex) as a function of different environmental and land-use factors. The two densest populations of the species were sampled and different physiographic and land-use parameters were obtained. First, a structural characterization, specifically focused on regeneration, was carried out, based on the count of individuals and their classification according to their size (seedlings, saplings, or adults) and position (either beyond or below the canopy). The use of Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and Regression Trees permitted the identification and analysis of environmental and land-use variables significantly related to regeneration. Juniper woodlands in this part of Spain generally show a remarkable level of regeneration, although some significant differences were detected between the two existing populations. Of the factors studied, time since regeneration started, elevation, and soil rock surface cover influence J. oxycedrus regeneration at most of the individual classes considered, indicating the significance of these variables in this species regeneration. Canopy cover and depth of the organic layer and zone also affect several of the recruitment classes. Furthermore, radiation, the time elapsed since regeneration started, elevation, and aspect affect stand structure to a significant extent. The results of this study enlarge the knowledge on J. oxycedrus regeneration and woodland structure, providing helpful information for the conservation of these protected habitats.  相似文献

崇明东滩南部滩面高程、土壤盐度在空间上呈明显的梯度变化规律。高程整体西高东低、北高南低, 盐度东北高、西南低, 两者共同限制着盐沼植物在空间上的分布。该文围绕崇明东滩南部主要植被类群及其空间分布, 探讨了土壤盐度、潮滩高程两大环境因子与植物种群分布的对应关系。基于2013年夏、秋季植被空间网格采样和空间插值, 分析了东滩南部植物的空间分布现状, 发现不同植物类群在高程和土壤盐度上存在极显著的差异(p < 0.01)。高程差异: 莎草科类群主要分布于高程区间2.93-4.07 m的低潮滩, 禾本科主要集中分布在高程3.13-4.31 m的中、高潮滩; 盐度差异: 海三棱藨草(Scirpus mariqueter)和互花米草(Spartina alterniflora)优势种群植被覆盖区表层30 cm的平均土壤盐度为(3.2 ± 0.6) g·kg-1, 显著高于其他类群植物分布区的平均土壤盐度(2.0 ± 0.3) g·kg-1 (p < 0.01)。崇明东滩湿地生态系统的关键种兼先锋种——海三棱藨草, 分布高程介于2.53-3.97 m, 而互花米草能适应海三棱藨草80%的高程区间, 两者在高程上存在竞争关系。统计数据显示, 研究区域中近90%的海三棱藨草分布在研究区东北部, 土壤盐度范围为1.6-4.5 g·kg-1, 海三棱藨草、互花米草能较好地适应该空间内的盐度胁迫, 两种植物在此交替出现。但是在高程和土壤盐度的综合作用下, 互花米草的生长状况更好, 因此该区的海三棱藨草很可能会被互花米草逐步取代。对各类群植被分布和优势面积的研究发现, 海三棱藨草总分布面积为294 hm2, 优势群落面积120 hm2, 海三棱藨草仅占莎草科植物总优势面积的15.7%, 占研究区总面积的6.9%, 在6种主要植物(芦苇(Phragmites australis)、白茅(Imperata cylindrica)、互花米草、糙叶薹草(Carex scabrifolia)、藨草(Scirpus triqueter)、海三棱藨草)中比重最小, 这给保护区内海三棱藨草种群的恢复和保护带来极大的挑战。  相似文献
