The ability of human subjects to distinguish between aliphatic C6 alcohols differing in presence, position, or configuration (i.e., cis-trans geometry) of a double bond was tested. In a forced-choice triangular test procedure, 20 subjects were repeatedly presented with all 21 binary combinations of the seven stimuli and asked to identify the bottle containing the odd stimulus. I found (a) that as a group, the subjects performed significantly above chance level in all tasks but two and thus were clearly able to discriminate between most of the odor pairs presented; (b) marked interindividual differences in discrimination performance, ranging from subjects who were able to significantly distinguish between all 21 odor pairs to subjects who failed to do so with 10 of the tasks; (c) that odor pairs involving two hexenols were significantly more difficult to discriminate than odor pairs that involved hexanol and one of the hexenols; (d) that odor pairs involving hexenols sharing the same geometry but differing in the position of the double bond by only one carbon atom were significantly more difficult to distinguish than odor pairs that involved hexenols differing by two carbon atoms; (e) that odor pairs involving 4-hexenols were significantly easier to discriminate than 3-hexenols, which, in turn, were significantly easier to distinguish than 2-hexenols; and (f) that odor pairs involving two cis-hexenols were significantly more difficult to discriminate than odor pairs that involved two trans-hexenols. These findings demonstrate that the presence as well as the position and configuration of a double bond affected discriminability in a systematic manner and suggest that these molecular structural features may be important determinants of the interaction between stimulus molecule and olfactory receptor and thus may affect odor quality of aliphatic alcohols.  相似文献

Little is known about coding of taste mixtures in complex dynamic stimulus environments. A protocol developed for odor stimuli was used to test whether rapid selective adaptation extracted sugar and salt component tastes from mixtures as it did component odors. Seventeen human subjects identified taste components of "salt + sugar" mixtures. In 4 sessions, 16 adapt-test stimulus pairs were presented as atomized, 150-μL "taste puffs" to the tongue tip to simulate odor sniffs. Stimuli were NaCl, sucrose, "NaCl + sucrose," and water. The sugar was 98% identified but the suppressed salt 65% identified in unadapted mixtures of 2 concentrations of NaCl, 0.1 or 0.05 M, and sucrose at 3 times those concentrations, 0.3 or 0.15 M. Rapid selective adaptation decreased identification of sugar and salt preadapted ambient components to 35%, well below the 74% self-adapted level, despite variation in stimulus concentration and adapting time (<5 or >10 s). The 96% identification of sugar and salt extra mixture components was as certain as identification of single compounds. The results revealed that salt-sugar mixture suppression, dependent on relative mixture-component concentration, was mutual. Furthermore, like odors, stronger and recent tastes are emphasized in dynamic experimental conditions replicating natural situations.  相似文献

The judgment of odor similarity between members of pairs ispreferable to odor naming in some situations. Similarity judgmentsare numerically summarized by multidimensional scaling (MDS)methods, which encourage the use of large numbers of pairs ofodorants; but the presentation of many different odorants involvesdifficulties in stimulus preparation and presentation. The microencapsulationof odorants provides a stimulus presentation method for olfactorytests using nothing more than paper and pencil. This reportexamines the feasibility of the microencapsulated odorant asa stimulus procedure in MDS analyzed similarity judgments. Inaddition, the effects of repeated testing, both within and betweentest sessions was examined. Special attention was given to asymmetryof similarity perception. The new method of odor delivery provedto be excellent, and the MDS model produced was as expected.Systematic trends to judge pairs as increasingly similar overrepeated judging, both within and between sessions, was observed.There were instances of asymmetry of similarity perception betweenthe two orders of presentations of some odor pairs, but notothers. The results suggested additional studies which willlead to a psychometrics of individual differences in odor qualityperception.  相似文献

Twenty-two experienced panelists rated odor intensity of aqueous solutions of citral, octen-1-ol-3, and hexanal. The panel assessed unmixed components and mixtures (9 binary and 4 ternary). In sensory sessions dedicated to mixtures (n = 6), evaluation was focused on one target odor, presented at a fixed concentration. All components had lower odor intensity on mixed presentations. In many cases, information obtained from simpler systems was not extended to complex mixtures. In a mixture, the competition between odorant molecules on qualitative aspects (dominance/suppression) imbalanced components contribution, anticipated from the quantitative distribution. Hexanal appeared to be the potentially weaker odorant in paired combinations, whereas octen-1-ol-3 had a lower relative impact on ternary systems. Suppression of the odor of octen-1-ol-3 and a concomitant increase in the odor of hexanal was common to all ternary mixtures. Reciprocal inhibition of octen-1-ol-3 and citral odors through perceptual interactions was suspected. Mutual suppression is suspected to have eased the perception of hexanal intensity.  相似文献

Electrical activity recorded from the olfactory bulbs and prepyriform cortex of guinea pigs, rats, and mice under conditions of spontaneous behavior and upon presentation of odor stimuli was analyzed in a comparative aspect. The dynamics of electrographic phenomena observed in rhinencephalic structures and the spectral composition of these phenomena are discussed considering the probability that the high-frequency components of this electrical activity are not directly related to realization of the olfactory function. Pygmy marmosets ( Cebuella pygmaea ) modified the structure of their trill vocalizations in response to pairing with a new mate. Prior to pairing, individual marmosets displayed different acoustic parameters of trill structure. Within the first 6 wk after pairing, three of four pairs produced trills that were more homogeneous between mates. Pairs that had the greatest individual difference in trill structure prior to pairing displayed convergence on a greater number of parameters than pairs having fewer differences in prepairing trill structure. The vocal structure following pairing remained highly stable in the two pairs that could be recorded 3 yr after initial pairing. Changes in trill structure that occurred within the first 6 wk after pairing were greater than spontaneous changes that occurred during baseline control recording sessions on the same animals. These results suggest that nonhuman primates show subtle modification of vocal structure, especially in response to changes in social environment. Similar findings have been reported in birds and other mammals.  相似文献

Despite the fact that humans experience mixtures of odors and tastes each time they eat, little is known of their capacity to detect the individual components of foods. To investigate this capacity, 43 subjects were trained to identify three odors and three tastes and were required to indicate which of these could be identified in stimuli consisting of one to six components. Although the odor and taste components of most binary mixtures were identified, subjects encountered substantial difficulties with more complex mixtures with only two components being identified in the four- to six-component mixtures. In general, tastes were more easily identified than smells and were the only stimuli identified in the five- to six-component mixtures. Several mechanisms are proposed to account for the poor identification of components.  相似文献

It is important to learn about changes in both taste and odor perceptions with increasing age, because the taste of foods we encounter in our daily life is strongly affected by their smell. This study discusses the difference in qualitative taste and odor discrimination between the elderly and the young. Tastants and odorants used in this study were presented not as single stimuli but as a taste mixture (sucrose and tartaric acid) and an odor mixture (beta-phenylethyl alcohol and gamma-undecalactone). The results showed that quality discrimination abilities of the elderly subjects for both taste and odor were significantly lower than those of the young subjects, indicating a decline in quality discrimination abilities related to age. Also, a moderate but significant correlation was observed between the taste discrimination ability and the odor discrimination ability. We measured thresholds for single-taste and odor components in mixtures and compared them between the elderly and the young to investigate the cause for these findings.  相似文献

Subjects were simultaneously given subthreshold levels of taste and odor stimuli, delivered orally, for both a commonly paired and an uncommonly paired taste–odor combination. Results indicate cross‐modal summation of subthreshold concentrations of both taste–odor pairs when the olfactory stimulus is delivered orally. Results of control studies suggest that the summation was indeed across modalities, and not due to the taste of the odor compound or the smell of the taste compounds. Furthermore, results indicate that regardless of taste–odor pair commonness, taste and smell can combine in a completely additive fashion (i.e., at threshold detectability when both stimuli are presented simultaneously at 50% threshold level) if the taste–odor pair is presented orally. In several instances, but not all, measured probabilities exceeded those predicted by probability summation, indicating that hyperadditive mixing often occurs, but there do seem to be individual differences. Cross‐modal summation, regardless of taste–odor pair commonness, has broader implications for the development of foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals, especially in masking undesirable tastes and smells.  相似文献

Body odors provide a rich source of sensory information for other animals. There is considerable evidence to suggest that short-term fluctuations in body odor can be caused by diet; however, few, if any, previous studies have demonstrated that specific compounds can directly mask or alter mouse urinary odor when ingested and thus alter another animal's behavior. To investigate whether the ingestion of citronellal, a monoterpene aldehyde that produces an intense aroma detected by both humans and mice, can alter mouse urinary odor, mice (C57BL6J) were trained in a Y maze to discriminate between the urinary odors of male donor mice that had ingested either citronellal in aqueous solution or a control solution. Trained mice could discriminate between urinary odors from the citronellal ingestion and control groups. A series of generalization tests revealed that citronellal ingestion directly altered mouse urinary odor. Moreover, trained mice that had successfully discriminated between urinary odors from donor mice of different ages failed to detect age-related changes in urine from male mice that had ingested 50 ppm of citronellal. This study is the first to show that ingestion of a xenobiotic can alter mouse urinary odor and confuse the behavioral responses of trained mice to age-related scents.  相似文献

We tested the ability of human subjects to distinguish between enantiomers, i.e. odorants which are identical except for chirality. In a forced-choice triangular test procedure 20 subjects were repeatedly presented with 10 enantiomeric odor pairs and asked to identify the bottle containing the odd stimulus. We found (i) that as a group, the subjects were only able to significantly discriminate the optical isomers of alpha-pinene, carvone and limonene, whereas they failed to distinguish between the (+)- and (-)-forms of menthol, fenchone, rose oxide, camphor, alpha-terpineol, beta-citronellol and 2-butanol; (ii) marked individual differences in discrimination performance, ranging from subjects who were able to significantly discriminate between 6 of the 10 odor pairs to subjects who failed to do so with 9 of the 10 tasks; (iii) that with none of the 10 odor pairs were the antipodes reported to differ significantly in subjective intensity when presented at equal concentrations; and (iv) that error rates were quite stable and did not differ significantly between sessions, and thus, we observed a lack of learning or training effects. Additional tests of the degree of trigeminality and threshold measurements of the optical isomers of alpha-pinene, carvone and limonene suggest that the discriminability of these three enantiomeric odor pairs is indeed due to differences in odor quality. These findings support the assumption that enantioselective molecular odor receptors may only exist for some but not all volatile enantiomers and thus that chiral recognition of odorants may not be a general phenomenon but is restricted to some substances.  相似文献

The applicability and efficiency of the electroencephalogram (EEG)-based method of biofeedback (BFB) training in correcting functional disorders in pregnancy have been evaluated in an obstetric/gynecological clinic in 65 pregnant women. Each of them took part in 2–12 examinations, which differed in voluntarily regulated EEG rhythm (a decrease in the θ, an increase in the α, or a decrease in the β rhythm), left-or right-hemispheric location of the EEG derivations, and the duration of the delay (3 or 30 s) of auditory feedback stimuli. As compared to the baseline, the most distinct and significant changes were observed in the α and θ rhythms during medical procedures, testifying to a general relaxing effect of the EEG BFB. The greatest number of successful trials (83.3 ± 4.4%) was observed for the BFB sessions aimed at decreasing the θ activity, and the lowest number (32.0 ± 6.7%), for the attempts at decreasing the EEG β rhythm. Voluntary control of the α rhythm of the EEG yielded a moderate number of successful trials (63.7 ± 5.3%), but it was characterized by the lowest efficiency (demonstrating minimal differences in positive changes in the functional state between successful and unsuccessful trials). The comparatively low effectiveness of voluntary BFB control of the α rhythm may have been determined by its high heterogeneity and suggests the necessity of using more narrowband EEG components in BFB sessions.  相似文献

Predator odors have been found to induce unconditioned fear in adult animals and provide the opportunity to study the mechanisms underlying unlearned and learned fear. Predator threats change across an animal's lifetime, as do abilities that enable the animal to learn or engage in different defensive behaviors. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the combination of factors that successfully induce unlearned fear to predator odor across development. Infant, juvenile, adolescent, and adult rats were exposed to one of the three odor stimuli (control odor, cat urine, or cat fur) in either a small or large chamber. Though all ages displayed fear-related behavior to cat odors, differences were reflected only in freezing behavior and not, as expected, risk-assessment. Infant and juvenile animals also increased freezing to cat urine compared to the control odor, possibly because these age groups possess limited defensive options to cope with threat and so may respond with freezing to all predator stimuli. Unexpectedly, chamber size had no effect on either freezing or risk-assessment in this study. Once the parameters of unconditioned fear are understood, they can be exploited to develop a learning paradigm to predator odors that could be used in early life.  相似文献

On the basis of its primary circuit it has been postulated that the olfactory bulb (OB) is analogous to the retina in mammals. In retina, repeated exposure to the same visual stimulus results in a neural representation that remains relatively stable over time, even as the meaning of that stimulus to the animal changes. Stability of stimulus representation at early stages of processing allows for unbiased interpretation of incoming stimuli by higher order cortical centers. The alternative is that early stimulus representation is shaped by previously derived meaning, which could allow more efficient sampling of odor space providing a simplified yet biased interpretation of incoming stimuli. This study helps place the olfactory system on this continuum of subjective versus objective early sensory representation. Here we show that odor responses of the output cells of the OB, mitral cells, change transiently during a go–no-go odor discrimination task. The response changes occur in a manner that increases the ability of the circuit to convey information necessary to discriminate among closely related odors. Remarkably, a switch between which of the two odors is rewarded causes mitral cells to switch the polarity of their divergent responses. Taken together these results redefine the function of the OB as a transiently modifiable (active) filter, shaping early odor representations in behaviorally meaningful ways.  相似文献

Background

Aplysia feeding is a model system for examining the neural mechanisms by which changes in motivational state control behavior. When food is intermittently present, Aplysia eat large meals controlled by a balance between food stimuli exciting feeding and gut stimuli inhibiting feeding. However, when food is continuously present animals are in a state in which feeding is relatively inhibited and animals eat little. We examined which stimuli provided by food and feeding initiate steady-state inhibition of feeding, and which stimuli maintain the inhibition.

Results

Multiple stimuli were found to control entry into the steady-state inhibition, and its maintenance. The major variable governing entry into the steady-state is fill of the gut with bulk provided by food, but this stimulus cannot alone cause entry into the steady-state. Food odor and nutritional stimuli such as increased hemolymph glucose and L-arginine concentrations also contribute to inhibition of feeding leading to entry into the steady-state. Although food odor can alone cause some inhibition of feeding, it does not amplify the effect of gut fill. By contrast, neither increased hemolymph glucose nor L-arginine alone inhibits feeding in hungry animals, but both amplify the inhibitory effects of food odor, and increased glucose also amplifies the effect of gut fill. The major variable maintaining the steady-state is the continued presence of food odor, which can alone maintain the steady-state for 48–72 hrs. Neither increased glucose nor L-arginine can alone preserve the steady-state, although they partially preserve it. Glucose and arginine partially extend the effect of food odor after 72 hrs.

Conclusions

These findings show that control of Aplysia feeding is more complex than was previously thought, in that multiple inhibitory factors interact in its control.  相似文献

Judges sorted forty-three odor stimuli into groupings of conceptual similarity, repeating the task over several sessions. There was little between-judges consistency in conceptual structure inferred from the sorting patterns and little within-judges consistency over sessions. The latter suggests that 'one time' sorting experiments would give different results on repetition. In a second experiment, the effect of prior categorization experience on subsequent categorical learning was examined. Naive judges and judges from the first study performed further sortings to see whether they could be induced to sort into a chosen set of perfumery categories. Various cues were given: category names, exemplar stimuli, numbers of stimuli within each category and finally the 'correct' answers. Increasing the cues increased the tendency to sort according to the a priori plan but complete success was not achieved. Judges who had previously sorted the stimuli according to their own conceptual structure, found the a priori perfumery structure harder to learn than naive judges.  相似文献

An important feature of olfactory perception is its dependence on respiratory activity. By inspiration, olfactory information ascends directly to olfactory-related limbic structures. Therefore, every breath with odor molecules activates these limbic areas associated with emotional experience and memory retrieval. We tested whether odors associated with autobiographical memories can trigger pleasant emotional experiences and whether respiration changes during stimulation with these odors. During presentation of odors related to autobiographical memories and control odors, we measured minute ventilation, tidal volume, respiratory frequency, O2 consumption, and end tidal CO2 concentration. Findings showed that autobiographical memory retrieval was associated with increasing tidal volume and decreasing respiratory frequency more than during presentation of control odors. Subjective feelings such as emotional arousal during retrieval of the memory, arousal level of the memory itself, or pleasantness and familiarity toward the odor evoked by autobiographical memory were more specific emotional responses compared with those related to control odors. In addition, high trait anxiety subjects responded with a stronger feeling of being taken back in time and had high arousal levels with tidal volume increases. We discussed assumptions regarding how deep and slow breathing is related to pleasantness and comfortableness of an autobiographical memory.  相似文献

研究了成年布氏田鼠在10min内,对不同光照周期下(长光照:LD;短光照:SD)陌生雌/雄个体尿液和粪便两种单一个体气味源的气味行为反应,实验发现:所有雌雄被试鼠对LD气味源比SD气味源表现出更多的嗅闻行为。LD和SD被试鼠对同性/异性尿液气味的嗅闻行为没有表现出明显的差别,但LD被试雄鼠对陌生雌鼠粪便的嗅闻频次显多于SD被试雄鼠,从嗅闻行为特征量(嗅闻行为占所有行为的百分比)来看,所有LD和SD被试雌,雄鼠对尿液的嗅 明显多于粪便,除SD粪便气味外,被试鼠对异性气味源的嗅闻明显多于同性,实验结果表明:作为两种个体气味源,尿液和粪便都带有季节性信息,而且是具有性别特性的。异性的个体气味源比同性的个体气味源更具吸引力;长光照动物的个体气味比短光照动物的气味更具吸引力。  相似文献
