Sexual ornamentation and immunocompetence in the barn swallow   总被引:12,自引:9,他引:3
The handicap hypothesis of honest signaling suggests that secondarysexual characters reliably reflect phenotypic or genotypic qualityof signalers. This hypothesis is based on the assumptions thatsignals are costly to produce and/or maintain and the cost ofa given level of signaling is higher for low quality than forhigh quality signalers. We tested these assumptions in a fieldexperiment in which the size of a secondary sexual character[tail length in male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)] was experimentallymanipulated. Males were randomly assigned to tail elongation, tail shortening, or two control treatments (tail manipulation,or just capture, ringing, and handling). Male barn swallowswere challenged with an injection of sheep red blood cells, and blood was sampled on the day of first capture and after3 to 4 weeks for determination of concentrations of gamma-globulins.Tail-elongated males did not increase levels of gamma-globulinswhile males of the other three groups demonstrated increases.Analyses of variation in gamma-globulins within treatment groupsrevealed a positive correlation between gamma-globulins andoriginal tail length among males with elongated tails. Theseresults suggest that tail length imposes an immu-nocompetencecost on males, and that males with naturally long tails aredifferentially better able to cope with this cost.  相似文献

The expression of testosterone-dependent sexual traits mightsignal the ability of their bearers to cope with parasite infections.According to the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis (IHH),such signals would be honest because physiological costs oftestosterone, such as a reduced ability to control parasiteinfections, would prevent cheating. We tested whether testosteronewould affect the outcome of a standardized parasite challengein red grouse, using a main parasite of the species, the nematodeTrichostrongylus tenuis. We caught males in spring, removedtheir nematode parasites, and implanted them with testosteroneor empty implants, as controls. After 1 month, they were reinfectedwith a standard dose of infective T. tenuis parasites. Whenchallenged, testosterone males had relatively less globulinrelative to albumin plasma proteins than control males, an indicationthat they had experienced increased physiological stress. Testosterone-treatedmales had significantly more T. tenuis parasites than controlsin the next autumn and also had more coccidia and lost moreweight than controls. Testosterone-treated males neverthelessbenefited from their elevated spring testosterone: they hadbigger sexual ornaments than controls both in spring and autumn, and they tended to have a higher pairing and breeding successthan controls. Our results supported the IHH in showing thatelevated testosterone impaired the ability of males to copewith a standardized challenge by a dominant parasite. Testosteronethus plays a key role in mediating trade-offs between reproductiveactivities and parasite defense, and testosterone-dependentcomb size might honestly signal the ability of red grouse tocontrol T. tenuis infection.  相似文献

Darwin first identified female choice and male—male competitionas forms of sexual selection resulting in the evolution of conspicuoussexual dimorphism, but it has proven challenging to separatetheir effects. Their effects on sexual selection become evenmore complicated when sperm competition occurs because spermprecedence may be either a form of cryptic female choice ora form of male—male competition. We examined the effectsof tail height on male—male competition and female choiceusing the sexually dimorphic red-spotted newt (Notophthalmusviridescens viridescens). Experiment 1 examined whether maletail height influenced male mating success. Males with deeptails were more successful at mating with females than thosewith shallow tails. Successful, deep-tailed males also were bigger(snout-vent length; SVL) than unsuccessful, shallow-tailed males, but they did not vary in tail length or body condition. Of these, only tail height and tail length are sexually dimorphic traits.Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that the differential successof males with deeper tails was due to female choice by examiningboth simultaneous female preference for association and sequentialfemale choice. We found no evidence of female choice. When maleswere not competing to mate with females, tail height did notinfluence male mating success. Successful males did not havedifferent SVL and tail lengths than unsuccessful males. Thus, tail height in male red-spotted newts appears to be an intrasexuallyselected secondary sexual characteristic. Experiment 3 usedpaternity exclusion analyses based on molecular genetic markersto examine the effect of sperm precedence on sperm competitionin doubly-mated females. Sperm precedence likely does not havea pervasive and consistent effect on fertilization success becausewe found evidence of first, last, and mixed sperm usage.  相似文献

Life-history theory posits trade-offs between fitness components. Reproduction negatively affects physiology and immune systemfunctioning, and the effect of this form of stress may be mediatedby glucocorticosteroids. We manipulated brood size of barnswallows (Hirundo rustica) to study the effect of stress arisingfrom reproductive effort on corticosterone levels of males. We also measured T-cell—mediated immunocompetence by intradermally injecting birds with phytohemagglutinin, whichis mitogenic to T-lymphocytes. The results confirmed the predictionof a negative effect of parental effort on lymphoproliferativeresponse. We found no covariation between immune response andcorticosterone levels. Males with long tails, an ornament currentlyunder directional sexual selection, had a relatively large T-cell response to the mitogen, consistent with models of parasite-mediated sexual selection predicting higher levels of immune defensein highly ornamented males. In addition, males with large sexualornaments had relatively low corticosterone levels at the endof the parental period. These results can be reconciled withthe hypothesis proposing a trade-off between parental activitiesand adaptive immunity and suggest that highly ornamented malesare less exposed or less susceptible to stress arising fromparental effort.  相似文献

Sexual advertisement and immune function in an arachnid species (Lycosidae)   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
A simple version of the immunocompetence handicap hypothesizesthat through condition-dependence, the size of the sexual traitmay be positively related to immune function at the populationlevel. In the present study, we investigated the relationshipbetween sexual advertisement and immune function in a naturalpopulation of male wolf spiders, Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata (Araneae:Lycosidae). Males of H. rubrofasciata have a costly and condition-dependentacoustic signal, courtship drumming. In the mating season, malesdrum against dry leaves while wandering around the habitat searchingfor receptive females. Males increase their mating success byincreasing their drumming rate and mobility. We used drummingrate and mobility measured without female proximity as estimatesof sexual advertisement. As estimates of male immune function,we used encapsulation rate and lytic activity. Encapsulationrate is a common challenging technique, which measures immuneresponse against multicellular parasites. Lytic activity isa monitoring technique, which measures immune response againstpathogens. Our results show that males with higher drummingrate had higher encapsulation rate. This suggests that femalesmight use drumming rate as a signal for choosing males withgood immunocompetence. Moreover, our results show that maleswith higher mobility had higher lytic activity. As females aremore likely to encounter those males that have higher mobility, this might also select males with better immune function. Ourresults suggest that the immunocompetence handicap might workalso among spiders, although we could not assess the causalityof the relationship between sexual selection and immune functionin this correlational study.  相似文献

Symmetrical male sexual ornaments, paternal care, and offspring quality   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Meller  A. P. 《Behavioral ecology》1994,5(2):188-194
Simultaneous manipulation of tail length and tail asymmetryin male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) has revealed that femalesprefer maJes with both long and symmetrical tail ornaments overmales with short and asymmetrical ornaments. Fluctuating asymmetryin tail length has a negative effect on the maneuvering abilityof male barn swallows, and females may prefer males with symmetricaltail ornaments because they thereby acquire more direct fitnessbenefits in terms of paternal care. The least preferred maleswith short tails with high asymmetry performed an absolutelyand relatively larger share of feeding of nestlings than themost preferred males. However, the combined feeding rate ofthe pair was not statistically significantly different betweentreatment groups. Fully grown tarsus length and body mass ofoffspring on day 15 did not differ between treatments. Theseresults indicate that females do not prefer males with symmetricaltail ornaments because such males contribute a relatively orabsolutely larger share of parental duties. Although these resultsdo not explain the basis of female choice for long and symmetricaltails, the results are consistent with a hypothesis that femalesof species with biparental care should invest differentiallyin their offspring relative to the quality of their mates. Theresults are also consistent with a hypothesis that preferredmales have access to mates with superior parenting abilities  相似文献

Previous studies have shown no significant effect of experimentaltail length manipulation in female barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)at the beginning of a breeding season on reproductive successor behavior during that breeding season. In the present study,we investigate if tail length manipulation had any effect onreproductive performance the following year, the so-called long-termeffect, in contrast to the short-term effects already studied. We found that females with experimentally elongated externaltail feathers at the beginning of a breeding season producedless offspring during the breeding season the following yearthan did females with shortened or unmanipulated tails. Theseresults suggest that tail elongation caused flight deficienciesthat deteriorated the condition of females and eventually reducedreproductive success. The finding of long-term effects but nosignificant short-term effects for female tail elongation suggeststhat female barn swallows have the ability to adjust immediateparental investment. Detrimental effects of long tails in femalesin terms of decreased reproductive success might explain whyfemale tails are not as long as those of males. Finally, femalesmated to long-tailed (sexually attractive) males decreased theirreproductive success the following year more than did femalesmated to short-tailed males, possibly owing to differentialparental effort causing a deterioration of their condition.  相似文献

The differential allocation hypothesis predicts that females should invest more in reproduction when paired with attractive males. We measured egg volume in Cape sugarbirds (Promerops cafer), a sexually dimorphic passerine, in relation to paternity of the offspring and in response to an experimental tail length treatment. We manipulated tail length, after pair formation, but before egg laying: males had their tails either shortened or left unmanipulated. Our manipulation was designed to affect female allocation in a particular breeding attempt rather than long‐term mate choice: males with shortened tails would appear to be signalling at a lower level than they should given their quality. We found that egg volume was smaller in the nests of males with experimentally shortened tails but larger when the offspring were the result of extra‐pair matings. Both these findings are consistent with the differential allocation hypothesis. We suggest that tail length may be used by females as a cue for mate quality, eliciting reduced female investment when breeding with social mates; and with males with shortened tails.  相似文献

Male guppies Poecilia reticulata exhibit two types of mating behavior, i.e., courtship displays for cooperative copulation and sneaking attempts for forced copulation. The frequencies of the two male mating behaviors are influenced by tail length. Males possessing long tails exhibit courtship displays less frequently and sneaking attempts more frequently than those possessing short tails, even though they have similar total lengths. To examine whether these male behavioral tendencies depending on tail length are genetically controlled or are determined by tail length per se, tail length manipulation was conducted. The tail lengths of males that had previously possessed longer tails were surgically shortened to a greater degree than those of their counterparts that had previously possessed shorter tails. Although the frequencies of the mating behaviors exhibited by the latter males did not apparently change, the former males clearly increased the frequency of courtship displays and decreased that of sneaking attempts following tail shortening. These results indicate that males adjust the frequencies of the two mating behaviors according to their tail length. Since females avoid cooperative mating with males possessing long tails, the change in mating behavioral patterns by males depending on their tail length may increase their mating opportunities.  相似文献

The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis proposes that the expression of secondary sexual characteristics is positively related to testosterone levels, but that elevated testosterone levels also impose costs from immune suppression. Hence, testosterone-dependent characteristics should accurately reflect male quality because only high-quality males are able to invest in large sexual characteristics without detrimental effects upon their own immune system. Most studies to date have focused on the role of testosterone in the expression of male ornaments and on the possible immunosuppressant effects of androgens in males. In the moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), a sexually monomorphic monogamous bird species showing a partial sex-role reversal, both sexes have a prominent frontal shield. We implanted both sexes with testosterone-filled implants to examine the effects of testosterone on shield characteristics and immune function. Shield size, thickness, and color were significantly increased by an experimental increase in testosterone concentrations in both males and females. Likewise, removal of the implants led to a rapid decrease in shield size and thickness in both males and females, suggesting that both sexes responded quickly to an increase or a decrease in testosterone. Moorhens implanted with testosterone had higher intensities of ectoparasite infestations than control birds, but other indirect measures of immunocompetence did not differ significantly between the two categories of birds.  相似文献

Asynchronous hatching of eggs in avian clutches produces a size hierarchy among nestlings that may lead to variation within broods in resistance to pathogens or parasites. In this study, we tested several predictions regarding variation in immunocompetence and distribution of parasites within avian broods by combining parasite removal and carotenoid supplementation treatments in nests of mountain bluebirds Sialia currucoides . Last-hatched nestlings were less likely to invest carotenoids in an induced cell-mediated immune response, suggesting they may be more susceptible to parasites; however, parasite removal disproportionately benefited middle-ranked nestlings. This supports the hypothesis that some avian ectoparasites balance host resistance against nutritional benefits by preferentially parasitizing nestlings of intermediate quality and immunocompetence. We found no evidence that males positioned last in the hatching sequence were differentially affected by ectoparasites, and, contrary to some previous studies in other passerines, last-hatched nestlings in asynchronously hatching broods were not less immunocompetent than their nest mates. In fact, junior nestlings exhibited weaker immune responses than their siblings in more synchronously hatching broods, and we suggest this may reflect environment-dependent maternal effects that warrant further investigation. Overall, our results highlight the importance of understanding the feeding and host selection behaviour of ectoparasites, as well as the fitness consequences thereof, since many predictions related to within-brood distribution of parasites require that parasites are able to discern the relative quality of available hosts.  相似文献

Exaggerated tail feathers of birds constitute a standard exampleof evolution of extravagant characters due to sexual selection.Such secondary sexual traits are assumed to be costly to produceand maintain, and they usually are accompanied by morphologicaladaptations that tend to reduce their costs. The aerodynamiccosts for male barn swallows Hirundo rustica of having longtails were quantified using aerodynamics theory applied to morphologicaldata from seven European populations. Latitudinal differencesin tail length were positively correlated with differences inflight costs predicted by aerodynamics theory. A positive relationshipbetween aerodynamic costs of long tails and the degree of sexualsize dimorphism was found among populations. Latitudinal differencesin foraging costs may result in tail length being relativelysimilar in males and females in southern populations, whereasthe low foraging costs for males in northern populations mayallow them to cope with higher aerodynamic costs, giving riseto large sexual size dimorphism. Enlargement of wingspan inmales can alleviate but not eliminate the costs of tail exaggeration, and therefore differences in aerodynamic costs of male ornamentswere maintained among populations. Sexual size dimorphism in thebarn swallow arises as a consequence of latitudinal differencesin the advantages of sexual selection for males and the costsof long tails for males and females.  相似文献

Parasites deplete the resources of their host and can consequently affect the investment in competing traits (e.g. reproduction and immune defence). The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis posits that testosterone (T) mediates trade-offs between parasite defence and reproductive investment by suppressing immune function in male vertebrates while more recently a role for glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol (C)) in resource allocation has been suggested. These hypotheses however, have not always found support in wild animals, possibly because most studies focus on a single parasite species, whereas infections with multiple parasites are the rule in nature. We measured body mass, T- and C-levels of wild male highveld mole-rats (Cryptomys hottentotus pretoriae) naturally uninfected or infected with a cestode (Mathevotaenia sp.) right after capture. Subsequently, we injected animals subcutaneously with a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to simulate a bacterial infection and recorded changes in body mass, food intake, haematological parameters and hormone levels. As a control, animals were injected with saline. Natural infection neither affected initial body mass nor C-levels, whereas infected males had significantly reduced T-levels. We observed significant reductions in food intake, body mass and T in response to LPS but not saline while C increased. However, this response did not vary with infection status. In contrast, final body mass and some haematological parameters were significantly lowered in infected males. Our results suggest that naturally infected males are able to compensate for resource depletion by physiological adjustments. However, this leaves them less tolerant to the challenges of a secondary infection.  相似文献

Parasite virulence has been hypothesised to increase with the degree of host sociality because highly social hosts have a greater probability of encountering horizontal transmission of parasites and experiencing infections with multiple strains of the same parasites than do solitary hosts. As compared with the defences of closely related social host species, we predicted that solitary hosts should have relatively weak defences against parasites, thus being relatively more affected when parasitised by a novel parasite. We tested this prediction by either experimentally infesting 12 nests of the solitarily nesting red-rumped swallow Hirundo daurica with 50 individuals of the generalist martin bug Oeciacus hirundinis or by fumigation of nine nests. Nestlings 13 days old from the parasite addition group experienced increased mortality, attained lower body mass and tended to have shorter tarsi compared to nestlings from fumigated nests. Surprisingly, nestlings from the parasite addition group had higher packed cell volume (cellular fraction of blood) and lower levels of heat shock proteins (HSP60) than nestlings from the fumigation group. A measure of immunocompetence was not significantly affected by treatment, but its magnitude was positively related to packed cell volume and negatively related to level of HSP60. Solitary hosts like the red-rumped swallow have weak immune responses and low levels of heat shock proteins when infested with ectoparasites while highly social hosts have strong immune responses and high levels of heat shock proteins when infested. These findings partially support the hypothesis that potential host species with weak defences are more susceptible to infection and the deleterious effects of evolving parasites than potential hosts with strong defences.  相似文献

The hypothesis that extravagant ornaments signal parasite resistancehas received support in several species for ornamented malesbut more rarely for ornamented females. However, recent theorieshave proposed that females should often be under sexual selection, and therefore females may signal the heritable capacity toresist parasites. We investigated this hypothesis in the sociallymonogamous barn owl, Tyto alba, in which females exhibit on average more and larger black spots on the plumage than males, and in which males were suggested to choose a mate with respectto female plumage spottiness. We hypothesized that the proportionof the plumage surface covered by black spots signals parasiteresistance. In line with this hypothesis, we found that theectoparasitic fly, Carnus hemapterus, was less abundant onyoung raised by more heavily spotted females and those flieswere less fecund. In an experiment, where entire clutches werecross-fostered between nests, we found that the fecundity ofthe flies collected on nestlings was negatively correlatedwith the genetic mother's plumage spottiness. These resultssuggest that the ability to resist parasites covaries with theextent of female plumage spottiness. Among females collecteddead along roads, those with a lot of black spots had a smallbursa of Fabricius. Given that parasites trigger the developmentof this immune organ, this observation further suggests thatmore spotted females are usually less parasitized. The same analyses performed on male plumage spottiness all provided non-significant results. To our knowledge, this study is the first one showingthat a heritable secondary sexual characteristics displayedby females reflects parasite resistance.  相似文献

We studied blood parasite infections in relation to aspectsof sexual selection and mate choice in 10 species of birds ofparadise. Across species there was a significant, positive correlationbetween relative parasite intensity and showiness in males.Parasite infections also correlated across species with thedegree of sexual dimorphism and varied with mating systems.Promiscuous species were showier and had significantly higherparasite prevalences than monogamous species. Within one species,Lawes' Parotia (Parotia lawesii), parasite intensity was negativelycorrelated with all phenotypic traits examined, a pattern significantlydifferent than random. The mating success of males with lowparasite intensities varied, but males with high intensitiesdid not mate. Sampling of individual males on repeated occasionsrevealed large temporal differences in parasite counts whichspanned the range believed to affect behavior and mating success.Whereas the interspecific correlations support one predictionof the Hamilton and Zuk hypothesis on parasites and sexual selection, the intraspecific data are equivocal with respect to a secondprediction of this hypothesis. Parasites appear to influencethe behavior of Lawes' Parotia, but alternative explanationsto that of Hamilton and Zuk for this effect are equally plausibleand there is no evidence of a link between female choice andthe traits in males indicative of parasite loads. We suggestthat female Lawes' Parotia may be avoiding highly infected malesrather than actively choosing parasite-resistant males.  相似文献

Parental effort is usually associated with high metabolism that could lead to an increase in the production of reactive oxidative species giving rise to oxidative stress. Since many antioxidants involved in the resistance to oxidative stress can also enhance immune function, an increase in parental effort may diminish the level of antioxidants otherwise involved in parasite resistance. In the present study, we performed brood size manipulation in a population of great tits (Parus major) to create different levels of parental effort. We measured resistance to oxidative stress and used a newly developed quantitative PCR assay to quantify malarial parasitaemia. We found that males with an enlarged brood had significantly higher level of malarial parasites and lower red blood cell resistance to free radicals than males rearing control and reduced broods. Brood size manipulation did not affect female parasitaemia, although females with an enlarged brood had lower red blood cell resistance than females with control and reduced broods. However, for both sexes, there was no relationship between the level of parasitaemia and resistance to oxidative stress, suggesting a twofold cost of reproduction. Our results thus suggest the presence of two proximate and independent mechanisms for the well-documented trade-off between current reproductive effort and parental survival.  相似文献

Testosterone (T) is hypothesized to be an important honesty reinforcer of animal sexual signals. Owing to its immunosuppressive effects, only those individuals that can immunologically withstand high T levels can develop the most exaggerated traits. To date, few studies have isolated phenotypic or genotypic buffers that provide 'high-quality' animals with such an advantage. Dietary carotenoid pigments may in fact confer such a benefit because when in high supply carotenoids boost immunocompetence and coloration in animals like birds and fishes. We examined the experimental effect of T elevation on carotenoid and immune status in male and female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) and found that T was immunostimulatory in a generalized cell-mediated challenge. We also detected a significant interaction between T treatment and the change in plasma carotenoids that occurred during the immune challenge; the relationship between blood carotenoid change and immunity was positive in controls and negative in T-implanted birds. This suggests that, while correlationally birds with high carotenoid stores were inherently better at mounting strong immune responses, experimentally administered T induced birds to deplete carotenoids for maximizing their health. Our findings highlight a nutrient-specific mechanism by which animals escape high immune costs of T elevation and thus can still elevate ornamentation.  相似文献

Courtship behavior in frogs is an ideal model for investigating the relationships among social experience, gonadal steroids, and behavior. Reception of mating calls causes an increase in androgen levels in listening males, and calling, in turn, depends on the presence of androgens. However, previous studies found that androgen replacement does not always restore calling to intact levels, and the relationship between androgens and calling may be context dependent. We examined the influence of androgens on calling behavior in the presence and the absence of social signals in male green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea). We categorized calling during an acoustic stimulus (mating chorus or tones) as evoked and calling in the absence of a stimulus as spontaneous. Intact males received a cholesterol implant, castrated males were castrated and received a cholesterol implant, and T-implanted males were castrated and received a testosterone implant. The androgen levels (mean +/- SE ng/ml of plasma) achieved by the implants were as follows: castrated males, 1.2 +/- 0.2; intact males 21.9 +/- 7.0; T-implanted males, 254.6 +/- 39.5. As in other frogs, calling depends on the presence of androgens, as castration abolished and T replacement maintained calling. However, among intact and T-implanted males, the influence of androgens on calling differed between spontaneous and evoked calling. There was a positive effect of androgen treatment on spontaneous call rate and a positive correlation between spontaneous call rate and androgen levels. The influence of androgen levels on evoked call rate was more complex and interacted with acoustic treatment. Surprisingly, T implants suppressed the chorus-specific increase in calling that is evident in intact males. In addition, in response to the chorus, T-implanted males called less than did intact males, in spite of higher androgen levels. Furthermore, variation in androgens did not explain variation in evoked call rate. These data indicate that androgens influence the motivation to call, but that, when socially stimulated, androgens are necessary but insufficient for calling.  相似文献

The immunocompetence-handicap hypothesis suggests that the honesty of quality signals could be guaranteed if testosterone (T) suppresses immune function while enhancing male ornaments. In addition, it has been proposed that the cost of enhancing ornaments should be highest for males with small ornaments. Recently, the assertion that T causes obligate immunosuppression has been questioned. In this study, we tested whether elevated T levels would increase susceptibility to a viral infection, and whether this hypothesized effect would be most pronounced in males with small ornaments. We surgically inserted T implants into 15 male greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) and control implants into a further 15 males. All birds were then infected with a naturally occurring virus (Sindbis virus, Alphavirus genus), and each bird's daily viraemia (blood virus concentration) was measured for seven days. The specific antibody response was measured for eight weeks. T-implanted males did not exhibit increased viraemia or decreased antibody response, and males with small and large ornaments did not respond differently to T implantation. We did, however, find that T implantation decreased viraemia early in the course of the infection and increased viraemia late in the infection. Thus, our results demonstrate that T may act both to increase and to decrease viraemia.  相似文献
