To the present lung liquid dynamics in the immediate neonatal period have been measured mainly by gravimetric techniques. This paper explores lung aeration and lung water dynamics in seven fetal lambs between 139 and 142 days of gestation delivered by caesarean section and ventilated on a constant-volume respirator. After caesarean section and instrumentation, fetal lambs were quickly transferred to a warm X-ray table and connected to a volume-cycled respirator. X-ray fluoroscopic images of the chest commenced before the first breath and were recorded on video tape. After 1 h of ventilation, measurements were made of pulmonary blood volume, and lung samples were taken for wet weight and dry weight analysis. Fluoroscopic image brightness was calibrated by comparison with images obtained from a water wedge, which extended across the X-ray field. Thus image brightness was related to "equivalent water path length" through the thorax. Within a defined lung field, image brightness increases as the amount of lung water in the path of the X-ray beam is reduced. This occurs rapidly at first and then more slowly over the remaining hour. There was considerable variation between the reduction of liquid in the lung fields examined within the one animal, as well as the absolute amount of fluid that had been cleared during the 1st h.  相似文献

We previously reported that pretreatment with endotoxin significantly reduced acute pulmonary O2 toxicity in lambs (J. Appl. Physiol. 65: 1579-1585, 1988). One of endotoxin's many effects is to inhibit cytochrome P-450 mono-oxygenation reactions, which are believed to produce toxic O2 species. Therefore, one possible explanation for endotoxin's beneficial effect is that it inhibited P-450-mediated O2 radical production during hyperoxia. To test this hypothesis, we administered a single dose of cimetidine, a noncompetitive inhibitor of P-450 activity, to nine lambs before continuous exposure to greater than 95% O2. Compared with six control O2-exposed lambs, the cimetidine-treated O2-exposed lambs maintained normal gas exchange for a longer period of time (P less than 0.01), accumulated lung water at a slower rate (P less than 0.01), and had normal microvascular permeability after 72 h of O2 exposure. Postmortem levels of antioxidant enzymes in blood-free lung homogenate were not increased in cimetidine-treated lambs. However, the levels of oxidized glutathione were significantly lower in cimetidine-treated lambs, and the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione concentrations (GSH/GSSG ratio) was sevenfold higher than the ratio measured in control O2-exposed lambs (P less than 0.001). In four lambs, pretreatment with ranitidine (a drug chemically related to cimetidine but without P-450 inhibitory activity) had no effect either on the time course of O2 injury or on postmortem antioxidants. We used the multiple indicator-dilution technique with norepinephrine, a vascular endothelium surface marker, to study the pulmonary vascular changes in awake exercising dogs. The vascular space tracers, labeled erythrocytes and albumin, and a water space tracer, 1,8-octanediol, were injected with the norepinephrine, and right atrium-aortic root dilution curves were obtained in nine dogs, at rest and at two increasing levels of exercise. Extravascular lung water multiple tracer dilutional estimates increased with flow and rapidly approached a maximal asymptotic value representing 75% of the postmortem lung weight. The ratio of the extravascular lung water measured in this way to that measured gravimetrically also increased, to reach an asymptotic proportion of close to 100%. The transit time-defined central vascular space increased linearly with flow; the ratio of lung tissue space to lung vascular space, therefore, decreased with increasing flow. The mean tracer upslope norepinephrine extractions at rest and at the two levels of exercise were 17 +/- 1.2, 14 +/- 0.8, and 15 +/- 0.8% (SE). With the use of the Crone approximation, we computed permeability-surface area products for norepinephrine; these increased linearly with flow. If permeability does not change, the increase in the permeability-surface area product with flow can be attributed to capillary recruitment. We conclude that when all lung tissue has become accessible to 1,8-octanediol delivered via the perfused vascular space, there is nevertheless further recruitment, with increase in flow, of vascular surface that can extract norepinephrine.  相似文献

Fetal lung fluid was collected following tracheotomy at the time of delivery of 40 premature lambs at 133-136 days gestational age. The concentration of phosphatidylcholine and saturated photophatidylcholine in fetal lung fluid was compared with the severity of lung disease of the lambs as assessed after 3 to 10 h of controlled mechanical ventilation with only peak inspiratory pressures varied to control the PCO2 values. Phosphatidylcholine concentration in fetal lung fluid did not correlate with the peak inspiratory pressures needed to ventilate the lambs, total lung compliance values, or the surfactant phosphatidylcholine pool sizes measured by alveolar wash after sacrifice. The ratio of saturated to total phosphatidylcholine was constant (0.55 +/- 0.02) and independent of concentration of phosphatidylcholine in the fetal lung fluid. The fetal lung fluid contained only about 0.7% of the final surfactant phosphatidylcholine pool released by the lambs to the alveoli after birth. Within a narrow gestational age range characterized by lung disease of widely varying severity, the phosphatidylcholine concentrations in fetal lung fluid were not predictive of the severity of lung disease.  相似文献

To investigate the mechanism of pulmonary edema in hyaline membrane disease (HMD), lymph from the efferent duct of the mediastinal lymph node was collected in premature lambs before and after delivery by cesarean section. Mean lymph flow in 7 lambs with histologically verified HMD increased progressively over 4 h after delivery to 3 times the fetal value, while lymph flow in 7 lambs without HMD increased to 3.5 times at 1 h and decreased thereafter. At 4 h after birth, lung lymph flow was significantly higher in lambs with HMD than in lambs without HMD (0.70 +/- 0.15 (SEM) vs 0.43 +/- 0.07 ml.h-1.kg-1). Lymph/plasma concentration ratio for small endogenous protein fractions (effective molecular radius, 3.6 and 3.8 nm) was significantly higher in lambs with HMD than in lambs without HMD at 2-4 h. Postmortem extravascular lung water was significantly higher in lambs with HMD (6.1 +/- 0.5 vs 4.3 +/- 0.3 ml/g dry lung weight). It is concluded that lung water is high in lambs with HMD, which appears to be a result both of delayed absorption of fetal lung liquid and increased permeability of the pulmonary exchange vessels.  相似文献

Our purpose was to see if the postmortem weight ratio of extravascular lung water to blood-free dry lung (blood-free ratio) was related to similar ratios in blood-inclusive lung and in blood. We developed linear regressions of blood-free ratio on ratios for blood-inclusive lung and blood together and for blood-inclusive lung alone for 73 sheep studied under 11 different protocols and for two subgroups of sheep, one with plasma space expansion and the other without expansion. The relation of ratios of blood-free to blood-inclusive lungs was different between the two subgroups. Although all regressions were highly correlated, the fits of the blood-free ratio on ratios for blood-inclusive lung and blood together were better than for blood-inclusive lung alone. The mean error of prediction of extravascular lung water for all sheep was significantly less for the regression of blood-free ratio on ratios for blood and blood-inclusive lung together (11 g) than for blood-inclusive lung alone (18 g). This study shows that weights of lung homogenate and blood samples before and after simple oven drying can be used to provide accurate inexpensive estimates of postmortem extravascular lung water.  相似文献

The effects of fetal tracheostomy on lung development in lambs have been investigated. Seven ewes, all with twin fetuses, were given a general anesthetic. One fetus in each set of twins was tracheostomized and the other fetus was sham operated (117-122 days gestation). The fetuses were delivered by cesarean section between 137 and 140 days gestation. Fetal tracheostomy decreased lung weight and volume, altered DNA concentration and the structural development of the acinus, and decreased lung distensibility. However, tissue and airway saturated phosphatidylcholine and lung stability during deflation were not significantly affected by fetal tracheostomy. It seems that tracheostomy in fetal lambs alters lung growth but does not affect the formation or release of surfactant. These data support the hypothesis that lung volume is actively maintained and lung growth promoted by the secretion of lung fluid against the resistance of the upper airway in fetal lambs.  相似文献

Lymph flow and lung weight in isolated sheep lungs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
To study the relationship between lung weight and lymph flow, we used an in situ, isolated sheep lung preparation that allowed these two variables to be measured simultaneously. All lungs were perfused for 4.5 h at a constant rate of 100 ml X min-1 X kg-1. In control lungs, the left atrial pressure (Pla) was kept at atmospheric pressure. In experimental lungs, Pla was kept atmospheric except for a 50-min elevation to 18 mmHg midway through the perfusion. During this period of left atrial hypertension, pulmonary arterial pressure rose from 18 to 31 mmHg, lymph flow rose from 3 to 12 ml/h, and the lymph-to-plasma oncotic pressure ratio (pi L/pi P) fell from 0.7 to 0.48. After left atrial pressure was returned to control, pulmonary arterial pressure, lymph flow, and pi L/pi P all returned to control levels. The rate of weight gain after the return of left atrial pressure to control was also the same as that in the control group. However, during the period of left atrial hypertension 135 ml of fluid were filtered into the lung, and this large increase in lung weight remained after the pressure was lowered. The presence of this substantial excess lung water despite control values for vascular pressures, lymph flow, rate of weight gain, and pi L/pi P suggests that the absolute amount of lung water has little influence on the dynamic aspects of lung fluid balance. These results are consistent with a two-compartment model of the interstitial space, where only one of the compartments is readily drained by the lymphatics.  相似文献

The effect of tracheal instillation of surface-active mixtures in premature lambs was studied as an animal model of exogenous surfactant replacement therapy for the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Specific mixtures studied were 7:3 (molar ratio) dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC):egg phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and extracted mixed lipids (with 1% protein) from cow lung lavage (CLL). Preventilatory tracheal instillation of greater than 15 mg/kg of CLL in 10 ml 0.15 M NaCl to premature lambs gave improved alveolar-arterial O2 gradient and blood gases and increased lung compliance, compared with control lambs over a 15-h period. Lambs receiving 7:3 DPPC:PG dispersions were not improved over controls with regard to pressure-volume characteristics and were worse than controls in arterial oxygenation. In terms of in vitro surface properties, both extracted natural CLL and 7:3 DPPC:egg PG were able to lower aqueous surface tension to 1 dyn/cm under dynamic compression. However, the dynamic respreading of CLL films on successive surface cycles was superior to that of 7:3 DPPC:PG. Moreover, after dispersal in 0.15 M NaCl by vortexing (5 mg/80 ml), CLL adsorbed to surface pressure (tau values of 45 dyn/cm within 10 min. 7:3 DPPC:PG adsorbed to significantly lower tau values after subphase dispersal by a variety of methods.  相似文献

Twelve sets of twin lambs were delivered prematurely by cesarean section at 133-136 days gestational age and ventilated for 3 h with either high-frequency oscillation (HFO) or conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV). Blood gases and pH values were monitored at 30-min intervals, and ventilator settings were adjusted to maintain CO2 partial pressure (PCO2) values within the normal range. There were no differences in the sequential blood gas or pH values between the HFO or CMV lambs. Mean airway pressures (MAP) between 8.0 and 20.4 cmH2O were required, indicating lung disease of variable severity in the lambs. The bidirectional protein leak from the vascular space to the airways and alveoli and vice versa was measured with radiolabeled albumins given by intravascular injection and with fetal lung fluid at birth. The albumin leaks in both directions increased as MAP required to normalize PCO2 increased, but the degree of leak was independent of type of ventilation. Pathological findings of epithelial necrosis and hyaline membranes occurred to a similar extent in lung sections from both groups of lambs. In the HFO animals less phosphatidylcholine in the alveolar wash and more of a tracer dose of radiolabeled natural surfactant that had been given at birth became tissue associated. These results indicate a decrease in the initial secretion of surfactant and/or a stimulation of reuptake in the HFO animals. HFO did not protect the immature lung from the development of large protein leaks or the pathological changes of the respiratory distress syndrome.  相似文献

Chronic lung injury from prolonged mechanical ventilation after premature birth inhibits the normal postnatal decrease in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and leads to structural abnormalities of the lung circulation in newborn sheep. Compared with normal lambs born at term, chronically ventilated preterm lambs have increased pulmonary arterial smooth muscle and elastin, fewer lung microvessels, and reduced abundance of endothelial nitric oxide synthase. These abnormalities may contribute to impaired respiratory gas exchange that often exists in infants with chronic lung disease (CLD). Nitric oxide inhalation (iNO) reduces PVR in human infants and lambs with persistent pulmonary hypertension. We wondered whether iNO might have a similar effect in lambs with CLD. We therefore studied the effect of iNO on PVR in lambs that were delivered prematurely at approximately 125 days of gestation (term = 147 days) and mechanically ventilated for 3 wk. All of the lambs had chronically implanted catheters for measurement of pulmonary vascular pressures and blood flow. During week 2 of mechanical ventilation, iNO at 15 parts/million for 1 h decreased PVR by approximately 20% in 12 lambs with evolving CLD. When the same study was repeated in eight lambs at the end of week 3, iNO had no significant effect on PVR. To see whether this loss of iNO effect on PVR might reflect dysfunction of lung vascular smooth muscle, we infused 8-bromo-guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP; 150 microg. kg(-1). min(-1) iv) for 15-30 min in four of these lambs at the end of week 3. PVR consistently decreased by 30-35%. Lung immunohistochemistry and immunoblot analysis of excised pulmonary arteries from lambs with CLD, compared with control term lambs, showed decreased soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). These results suggest that loss of pulmonary vascular responsiveness to iNO in preterm lambs with CLD results from impaired signaling, possibly related to deficient or defective activation of sGC, the intermediary enzyme through which iNO induces increased vascular smooth muscle cell cGMP and resultant vasodilation.  相似文献

Iodine-131-labeled iodo-antipyrine and 99mTc-labeled erythrocytes were used to measure water content in lungs. These radioactive tracers were injected into 11 dogs with injured lungs. Blood samples were drawn and the animals sacrificed. The lungs were removed, weighed and homogenized. Samples of blood and lung homogenate were assayed for 131I and 99mTc. Samples were also weighed before and after drying to a constant weight at 70–76 °C. Extravascular lung water was determined by the dual-isotope technique and again by gravimetric analysis. The average ratio of the results from the two different methods was 1.14 ± 0.20. The two methods were also compared by regression analysis and the correlation coefficient was 0.97 ± 0.09.  相似文献

Physiol. 83(4): 1307-1317, 1997.Toinvestigate the role of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of respiratorydistress after premature birth, we assessed the relationship betweencirculating neutrophil concentration and neutrophil accumulation in thelung, lung lymph and pleural liquid flow, and extravascular lungwater in 10 chronically catheterized preterm lambs (127 ± 1 days gestation) that were mechanically ventilated for 8 h afterbirth. Circulating neutrophil concentration transiently decreasedwithin 2 h after birth and then returned to prenatal values by 6-8h. The decrease in circulating neutrophil concentration was relateddirectly to the accumulation of neutrophils in the air spaces, drainageof liquid and protein from the lung 6-8 h after delivery, andpostmortem extravascular lung water. In additional studies, weintravenously administered mechlorethamine to 5 fetal lambs to reducecirculating neutrophils before delivery (neutrophil concentrationbefore birth: 9 ± 11 cells/µl). Compared with control lambs,neutrophil-depleted lambs had significantly less drainage of liquid(7.8 ± 5.9 vs. 2.6 ± 1.9 ml/h, respectively) and protein (116 ± 74 vs. 42 ± 27 mg/h, respectively) from the lung 6-8 hafter birth and significantly less extravascular lung water atpostmortem (6.5 ± 0.8 vs. 4.8 0.6 g/g dry lung,respectively). Thus neutrophils contribute to thepathogenesis of respiratory distress after premature birth byincreasing lung vascular protein permeability and promoting lung edema.

The present study was undertaken to gain further insight into the mechanisms responsible for the sustained active expiratory upper airway closure previously observed during high-permeability pulmonary edema in lambs. The experiments were conducted in nonsedated lambs, in which airflow and thyroarytenoid and inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle electromyographic activity were recorded. We first studied the consequences of hemodynamic pulmonary edema (induced by impeding pulmonary venous return) on upper airway dynamics in five lambs; under this condition, a sustained expiratory upper airway closure consistently appeared. We then tested whether expiratory upper airway closure was related to vagal afferent activity from bronchopulmonary receptors. Five bivagotomized lambs underwent high-permeability pulmonary edema: no sustained expiratory upper airway closure was observed. Finally, we studied whether a sustained decrease in lung volume induced a sustained expiratory upper airway closure. Five lambs underwent a 250-ml pleural infusion: no sustained expiratory upper airway closure was observed. We conclude that 1) the sustained expiratory upper airway closure observed during pulmonary edema in nonsedated lambs is related to stimulation of vagal afferents by an increase in lung water and 2) a decrease in lung volume does not seem to be the causal factor.  相似文献

Oxygen-induced lung microvascular injury in neutropenic rabbits and lambs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We did two studies to see if severe neutropenia might reduce the severity or delay development of O2-induced lung microvascular injury. First, we treated 11 rabbits with nitrogen mustard until their circulating neurophil count decreased to less than 50/microliters of blood, after which the rabbits breathed pure O2 until death; nine other rabbits received no nitrogen mustard and had normal numbers of circulating neutrophils during O2 breathing. All rabbits died of respiratory failure with pulmonary edema, and although chemotherapy decreased the number of neutrophils in the lungs by greater than 90%, it did not influence survival time or extravascular lung water content. To see if severe neutropenia might slow the development of O2-induced lung microvascular injury, we assessed the effects of sustained hyperoxia on lung fluid balance in unanesthetized lambs treated with hydroxyurea, so that their absolute neutrophil count was less than 50/microliters of blood. We measured pulmonary arterial and left atrial pressures, cardiac output, lung lymph flow, and concentrations of protein in lymph and plasma during a 2- to 4-h control period and then daily for 2 to 4 h as the lambs continuously breathed pure O2. After 3 days of hyperoxia, lymph flow doubled and the concentration of protein in lymph increased from 3.3 +/- 0.5 to 4.2 +/- 0.3 g/dl. Tracer studies with 125I-albumin before and 3 days after the start of O2 breathing confirmed the development of increased lung vascular permeability to protein. To assess the effects of alveolar hypoxia and angiotensin II infusion on distribution of blood flow to the lung we performed perfusion lung scans on anesthetized mechanically ventilated lambs. Scans were obtained by injecting 1-2 mCi of technetium-labeled albumin macroaggregates as the lambs were ventilated with air, with 10-14% O2 in N2, or with air while receiving angiotensin II intravenously. We found that both alveolar hypoxia and infusion of angiotensin II increased pulmonary vascular resistance and redistributed blood flow from the mid and lower lung regions towards the upper posterior region of the lung. We assessed the effects of angiotensin II infusion on filtration pressure in six lambs by measuring the rate of lung lymph flow and the protein concentration of samples of lung lymph. We found that angiotensin II infusion increased pulmonary arterial pressure 50%, lung lymph flow 90%, and decreased the concentration of protein in lymph relative to plasma. These results are identical to those seen when filtration pressure increases during alveolar hypoxia. We conclude that alveolar hypoxia and angiotensin II infusion both increase fluid filtration in the lung by increasing filtration pressure. The increase in filtration pressure may be the result of a redistribution of blood flow in the lung with relative overperfusion of vessels in some areas and transmission of the elevated pulmonary arterial pressure to fluid-exchanging sites in those vessels.  相似文献

Lung protein leaks in ventilated lambs: effects of gestational age   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
To study the protein permeability properties of the ventilated premature lung, we delivered groups of eight lambs at 122 and 135 days gestational age and ventilated the lambs equivalently. The lambs at 122 days gestational age had been treated with natural sheep surfactant at birth, and both groups of lambs had similar pH and blood gas values to 3 h of age. Three groups of lambs at 146 days gestational age also were studied for comparison; four lambs were ventilated to normalized PCO2 values, four lambs were ventilated equivalently to the premature lambs with supplemental CO2 used to normalize PCO2 values, and four lambs were treated with natural surfactant and ventilated similarly to the preterm lambs. The percent recovery into an alveolar wash and lung tissue of 131I-albumin given by intravascular injection and of 125I-albumin given into the airways was measured in each animal after killing at 3 h of age. Full-term lambs had a small bidirectional leak of albumin to and from the alveoli and lung tissue. The recovery of intravascular 131I-albumin in the alveolar wash was 5.8- and 4.1-fold higher in lambs at 122 and 135 days gestational age, respectively, than in full-term lambs. The loss of 125I-albumin from the airways and alveoli also increased as gestational age decreased. The bidirectional flux of albumin to and from the alveoli increased as gestational age decreased in the prematurely delivered and ventilated lambs.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference as an index of testes size, along with body weight, wither height, heart girth and body condition score were measured fortnightly for 114 Menz ram lambs from weaning (91+/-7 SD days) until puberty, which was defined as age at first collection of an ejaculate with 50 x 10(6) spermatozoa and 10% motility. The animals were maintained on poor (n=28), low (n=29), medium (n=29) or high (n=28) levels of nutrition through grazing and supplementation. Further, half the lambs in each group were drenched for endoparasites. Daily gains in live weight, wither height, heart girth and scrotal circumference were 48.5+/-1.6 g, 0.05+/-0.01 cm, 0.07+/-0.01 cm and 0.07+/-0.03 cm, respectively for the period from weaning to puberty and varied with level of nutrition (P<0.05 to 0.001) but not with drenching or its interaction with nutrition level (P>0.10). Scrotal circumference increased linearly and was strongly correlated with age, body weight, wither height, and heart girth (r = 0.83 to 0.85, P<0.001), and lamb weight could be predicted by the equation: 6.35 + 0.53 scrotal circumference (R(2) = 0.73). Mean age, body weight and condition score at puberty were 288+/-6 days, 19.3+/-0.4 kg and 2.6+/-0.06, respectively, and varied due to season of birth, level of nutrition and weaning weight (P<0.01 to 0.001). The nutrition level also influenced (P<0.001) scrotal circumference at puberty, averaging 21.5+/-0.3 cm. It was concluded that postweaning nutrition management had a strong influence on lamb weight gain, which in turn was related to testicular growth and puberty onset in Menz ram lambs. The suitability of scrotal size measurement as a criterion for early selection of tropical ram lambs is emphasised.  相似文献

Although increased lung expansion markedly alters lung growth and epithelial cell differentiation during fetal life, the effect of increasing lung expansion after birth is unknown. We hypothesized that increased basal lung expansion, caused by ventilating newborn lambs with a positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), would stimulate lung growth and alter alveolar epithelial cell (AEC) proportions and decrease surfactant protein mRNA levels. Two groups of lambs were sedated and ventilated with either 0 cmH(2)O PEEP (controls, n = 5) or 10 cmH(2)O PEEP (n = 5) for 48 h beginning at 15 +/- 1 days after normal term birth. A further group of nonventilated 2-wk-old lambs was used for comparison. We determined wet and dry lung weights, DNA and protein content, a labeling index for proliferating cells, surfactant protein mRNA expression, and proportions of AECs using electron microscopy. Although ventilating lambs for 48 h with 10 cmH(2)O PEEP did not affect total lung DNA or protein, it significantly increased the proportion of proliferating cells in the lung when compared with nonventilated 2-wk-old controls and lambs ventilated with 0 cmH(2)O PEEP (control: 2.6 +/- 0.5%; 0 PEEP: 1.9 +/- 0.3%; 10 PEEP: 3.5 +/- 0.3%). In contrast, no differences were observed in AEC proportions or surfactant protein mRNA levels between either of the ventilated groups. This study demonstrates that increases in end-expiratory lung volumes, induced by the application of PEEP, lead to increased lung growth in mechanically ventilated 2-wk-old lambs but do not alter the proportions of AECs.  相似文献

Hyperoxic adult rats have prolonged survival and reduced morphological evidence of lung injury when treated with a single dose of bacterial endotoxin; this effect is mediated by an augmentation of antioxidant enzyme activity in lung homogenate. To determine whether endotoxin would prolong survival and influence antioxidant enzyme levels in lambs whose physiological response to O2 breathing can be serially measured, we administered a single intravenous dose of endotoxin (0.75 microgram/kg body wt) to 13 lambs before exposing them to greater than 95% O2 (n = 11) or air (n = 2). Seven additional lambs were placed in O2 after receiving only saline vehicle. All lambs had been instrumented to measure pulmonary vascular pressures and cardiac output, and 10 lambs had lung lymph fistulas. O2-exposed control lambs developed noncardiogenic pulmonary edema and respiratory failure within 85 +/- 10 h (range 76-110 h); antioxidant enzymes were not increased, but reduced glutathione (GSH) levels fell and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) increased, reflecting the oxidant stress of O2 exposure. By contrast, endotoxin-treated O2-exposed lambs had a delayed increase in microvascular permeability to protein, a reduced rate of lung edema formation, normal gas exchange after 72 h in O2, and prolonged survival (136 +/- 15 h; range 90-160 h; all variables P less than 0.05). Despite prolonged survival, postmortem lung water content was no greater in the lambs that received endotoxin. Treatment with endotoxin did not increase antioxidant enzyme levels in lung homogenate, but levels of GSH relative to GSSG were significantly elevated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
