Tree shrew(Tupaia belangeri) is currently placed in Order Scandentia and has a wide distribution in Southeast Asia and Southwest China.Due to its unique characteristics, such as small body size, high brain-to-body mass ratio, short reproductive cycle and life span, and low-cost of maintenance, tree shrew has been proposed to be an alternative experimental animal to primates in biomedical research. However, there are some debates regarding the exact phylogenetic affinity of tree shrew to primates. In this study,we determined the mtDNA entire genomes of three Chinese tree shrews(T.belangeri chinensis) and one Malayan flying lemur(Galeopterus variegatus).Combined with the published data for species in Euarchonta,we intended to discern the phylogenetic relationship among representative species of Dermoptera,Scandentia and Primates. The mtDNA genomes of Chinese tree shrews and Malayan flying lemur shared similar gene organization and structure with those of other mammals.Phylogenetic analysis based on 12 concatenated mitochondrial proteinencoding genes revealed a closer relationship between species of Scandentia and Glires, whereas species of Dermoptera were clustered with Primates. This pattern was consistent with previously reported phylogeny based on mtDNA data, but differed from the one reconstructed on the basis of nuclear genes. Our result suggested that the matrilineal affinity of tree shrew to primates may not be as close as we had thought. The ongoing project for sequencing the entire genome of Chinese tree shrew will provide more information to clarify this important issue.  相似文献

Despite the important role of shrews (Soricomorpha: Soricidae) in the functioning of ecosystems, as predators and prey, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on this guild of mammals are still unclear. We studied the distribution of 5 species (the greater white toothed shrew Crocidura leucodon; the lesser white toothed shrew Crocidura suaveolens; the pigmy shrew Sorex minutus; the Appennine shrew Sorex samniticus and the Etruscan shrew Suncus etruscus) in a fragmented landscape in central Italy.Shrews were trapped with pitfall traps made from plastic water bottles, the number of traps increased with patch size. A total of 170 individuals, of 5 species of shrews were captured. Shrews were widely distributed in our study area, however patch occupancy was determined mainly by vegetation and geometrical characteristics of the patches. Our data supports the hypotheses that patterns of habitat selection and the dynamics of seasonal abundance (habitat and temporal partitioning between similarly sized species) reduce competitive pressure, thus allowing coexistence of shrews in relatively species-rich assemblages, for such small amounts of habitat. The most important outcome of our results is the crucial role played by vegetation structure in determining distribution patterns. These results strongly suggest that measurements of the vegetation structure of habitat patches should always be included as explanatory variables when studying the distribution of shrews in fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

Competition for resources has long been considered a major driver of evolution by natural selection. Thus, the ability to gain access to resources not available to other individuals and species should be under strong selection. In the present study, we focus on the potential role of biting in a shrew (Crocidura russula) because this trait may confer two advantages: (1) a broadening of the dietary niche and (2) the provision of direct superiority in interspecific interactions. The model chosen is the greater white‐toothed shrew, which is considered as invasive in northern Europe and which is also known to displace native species of shrew in this area. Moreover, its distribution appears to constrain the distributional ranges of other species of shrew in the Maghreb. We use geometric morphometrics and a simple biomechanical model to describe shape variation and to evaluate the mechanical potential of the mandible of ten species of white‐toothed shrews, with a special emphasis on C. russula and Crocidura suaveolens. We find that C. russula possesses an intermediate mechanical potential linked with an intermediate level of shape variability. Our results suggest that the higher mechanical potential may explain the observed pattern of colonization of the Atlantic islands by C. russula at the expense of C. suaveolens. Finally, our results also suggest that the ability to bite hard may be under strong selection in shrews. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 114 , 795–807.  相似文献

Hemoglobin Brigham (β Pro100 to Leu) was first reported in a patient with familial erythrocytosis. Erythrocytes of an affected individual from the same family contain both HbA and Hb Brigham and exhibit elevated O(2) affinity compared with normal cells (P(50) = 23 mm Hg vs. 31 mmHg at pH 7.4 at 37°C). O(2) affinities measured for hemolysates were sensitive to changes in pH or chloride concentrations, indicating little change in the Bohr and Chloride effects. Hb Brigham was separated from normal HbA by nondenaturing cation exchange liquid chromatography, and the amino acid substitution was verified by mass spectrometry. The properties of Hb Brigham isolated from the patient's blood were then compared with those of recombinant Hb Brigham expressed in Escherichia coli. Kinetic experiments suggest that the rate constants for ligand binding and release in the high (R) and low (T) affinity quaternary states of Hb Brigham are similar to those of native hemoglobin. However, the Brigham mutation decreases the T to R equilibrium constant (L) which accelerates the switch to the R state during ligand binding to deoxy-Hb, increasing the rate of association by approximately twofold, and decelerates the switch during ligand dissociation from HbO(2) , decreasing the rate approximately twofold. These kinetic data help explain the high O(2) affinity characteristics of Hb Brigham and provide further evidence for the importance of the contribution of Pro100 to intersubunit contacts and stabilization of the T quaternary structure.  相似文献

We analyzed 56 O2 equilibrium curves of fresh human blood, each from 0 to 150 Torr Po2. The data were collected over ranges of values for the 2,3-diphosphoglyceric acid-to-hemoglobin concentration ratio [DPG]/[Hb] of 0.2-2.7, for pH of 7.0-7.8, and for Pco2 of 7-70 Torr. Each curve was characterized according to the Adair scheme for the stepwise oxygenation of Hb, and the resulting constants (a1, a2, a3, a4) were analyzed to allow the simulation of the entire O2 equilibrium curve under any conditions of [DPG]/[Hb], pH, and Pco2 in the specified range. This analysis provides a powerful tool to study the affinity of Hb for O2 within the red blood cell and to predict the shape of the O2 equilibrium curve in various physiological and pathological states. Other attempts to predict blood O2 affinity have considered only P50 (the Po2 at one-half saturation with O2) or have provided too little data for continuous simulations.  相似文献

The social organization of short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda) populations was studied using field and laboratory experiments and observation of a shrew population inside a large enclosure. Short-tailed shrew populations contain resident and nomadic components. Residents occupy small stationary areas at high prey densities and larger areas that are shifted frequently at low prey densities. Areas occupied by residents overlap minimally in winter, non-breeding populations. In summer breeding populations areas occupied by residents of the same sex do not overlap while those of residents of opposite sexes may overlap. Residents defend the area occupied against conspecifics. Scent markings along boundaries appear to maintain the spatial distribution of residents and deter intrusions by nomadic shrews. During encounters vocalizations function as offensive threats, and attacks and chases follow if the intruding shrew does not retreat. Visual communication appears to be less important than chemical and vocal communication in the defence of the area occupied. These data suggest that Blarina is a solitary territorial species.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of a multi-species community of shrews inhabiting secondary forest and cacao-coffee plantations in the Tai National Park (Ivory Coast) was investigated. A total of 553 shrews were captured and 194 alimentary tracts were examined. Ten species were found, includingSylvisorex megalura and nine species ofCrocidura, forming a series with respect to body size. New ecological data on these little known African species are presented. All species of shrews ate a wide diversity of arthropods, with Coleoptera, Araneae, Formicidae and Diplopoda making the largest dietary contributions. Lumbricidae were eaten by two species.C. obscurior had an exceptionally long intestine for its size but there was no evidence of dietary specialisation in this or other shrew species. All species investigated ate predominantly small prey and there was no correlation between size of prey items consumed and body mass of shrew species. There was little evidence of resource partitioning amongst the shrews, despite differences in body size.  相似文献

Based on samples collected in 1989–90, I report on several aspects of the natural history of species of small mammals from seasonal montane areas in subtropical central Taiwan, including their reproduction, demography, sex ratio and body size. The climatic seasonality in the areas is striking. The wet season lasts from May through September and the dry season from October through April. The phenology of plant life is related to this seasonality: vegetative growth occurs primarily in the wet season, but fruit and seed production is concentrated in the dry season. Variation in the reproduction and demography are analysed between the wet and the dry season for six species, Apodemus semotus, Niviventer culturatus. Eothenomys melanogaster, Microtus Kikuchii, Anourosorex syuamipes and Soriculus fumidus . Two murid rodents. A semotus and N. culturatus. are capable of breeding year-round, whereas the microtine rodents, E. melanogaster and M. Kikuchii , have discrete breeding seasons. The shrews, A. squamipes and S. fumidus are both seasonal breeders. but they differ in the timing of their breeding cycles. While S. fumidus breeds primarily in the late dry season, A. syuamipes reproduces in the wet season. Finally, seasonal variation in reproduction is discussed in relation to phylogenetic and physio-ecological characteristics of these six species.  相似文献

We examined cytochrome b sequence variation in 251 ornate shrews (Sorex ornatus) from 20 localities distributed throughout their geographical range. Additionally, vagrant (S. vagrans) and montane (S. monticolus) shrews from four localities were used as outgroups. We found 24 haplotypes in ornate shrews from California (USA) and Baja California (Mexico) that differed by 1-31 substitutions in 392 bp of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence. In a subset of individuals, we sequenced 699 bp of cytochrome b to better resolve the phylogeographic relationships of populations. The ornate shrew is phylogeographically structured into three haplotype clades representing southern, central and northern localities. Analysis of allozyme variation reveals a similar pattern of variation. Several other small California vertebrates have a similar tripartite pattern of genetic subdivision. We suggest that topographic barriers and expansion and contraction of wetland habitats in the central valley during Pleistocene glacial cycles account for these patterns of genetic variation. Remarkably, the northern ornate shrew clade is phylogenetically clustered with another species of shrew suggesting that it may be a unique lowland form of the vagrant shrew that evolved in parallel to their southern California counterparts.  相似文献

The habitat occurrence and invertebrate prey distribution of nine species of shrew in the mid-taiga of central Siberia were investigated. Species richness ranged from 4–9 shrews per habitat. Sorex araneus and S. caecutiens were numerically dominant in all seven habitats (44 and 36% of the total catch, respectively) while Sorex minutus, S. tundrensis, S. isodon , and S. roboratus each constituted 4–6% and Sorex minutissimus, S. daphaenodon , and Neomys fodiens were rare (< 1% each). There was no overall correlation between abundance of shrews and invertebrate prey, but flood-plain habitats supported the greatest abundance and species richness of shrews, and high density and biomass of prey. Oligochaete-eating shrews were twice as numerous here as in other habitats, coincident with high abundance of oligochaetes. The large, earthworm-feeding Sorex roboratus occurred only here. The more acid, typical taiga habitats had lower adundance and species richness of shrews. They had the lowest density and biomass of prey, particularly oligochaetes, and far fewer oligochaete-eating shrews. The relative paucity of shrews in bush-meadow habitats, despite abundant prey, implied that habitat structure influences shrew distribution. Differential numbers of certain species in the presence or absence of larger congeners also suggested that interspecific competitive effects influence habitat selection by shrews. The high species richness of shrews here in the mid-taiga may be accounted for by the heterogeneous nature of the constituent habitats which provide niches for small and large species of shrew with a range of feeding habits.  相似文献

Coat colour anomalies in the common shrew, Sorex araneus L., in the geographical range of this species, including Poland, are extremely rare. This study describes atypically coloured common shrews. Light colouration of the coat is a result of lack ofpigment in the entire hair or hair fragments. It appears that atypically coloured shrews occur more often in isolated populations whose gene transfer with neighboring populations is limited.  相似文献

The EDS colony, developed as a new laboratory colony of the musk shrew, is characterized by a high incidence of early-onset spontaneous non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). In this colony, a few diabetic shrews exhibited a cataract at 1 month after the onset of diabetes, and all diabetic shrews had bilateral cataracts at 5 months after the onset of diabetes. In contrast, cataractous animals were never observed among non-diabetic shrews. These results suggest that the cataract in the EDS colony is a diabetic complication.  相似文献

Borna disease (BD) is a sporadic neurologic disease of horses and sheep caused by mammalian Borna disease virus (BDV). Its unique epidemiological features include: limited occurrence in certain endemic regions of central Europe, yearly varying disease peaks, and a seasonal pattern with higher disease frequencies in spring and a disease nadir in autumn. It is most probably not directly transmitted between horses and sheep. All these features led to the assumption that an indigenous virus reservoir of BDV other than horses and sheep may exist. The search for such a reservoir had been unsuccessful until a few years ago five BDV-infected shrews were found in a BD-endemic area in Switzerland. So far, these data lacked further confirmation. We therefore initiated a study in shrews in endemic areas of Germany. Within five years 107 shrews of five different species were collected. BDV infections were identified in 14 individuals of the species bicolored white-toothed shrew (Crocidura leucodon, HERMANN 1780), all originating from BD-endemic territories. Immunohistological analysis showed widespread distribution of BDV antigen both in the nervous system and in epithelial and mesenchymal tissues without pathological alterations. Large amounts of virus, demonstrated by presence of viral antigen in epithelial cells of the oral cavity and in keratinocytes of the skin, may be a source of infection for natural and spill-over hosts. Genetic analyses reflected a close relationship of the BDV sequences obtained from the shrews with the regional BDV cluster. At one location a high percentage of BDV-positive shrews was identified in four consecutive years, which points towards a self-sustaining infection cycle in bicolored white-toothed shrews. Analyses of behavioral and population features of this shrew species revealed that the bicolored white-toothed shrew may indeed play an important role as an indigenous host of BDV.  相似文献

We have sequenced four new mitochondrial genomes to improve the stability of the tree for placental mammals; they are two insectivores (a gymnure, Echinosorex gymnurus and Formosan shrew Soriculus fumidus); a Formosan lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus monoceros); and the New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri). A revision to the hedgehog sequence (Erinaceus europaeus) is also reported. All five are from the Laurasiatheria grouping of eutherian mammals. On this new data set there is a strong tendency for the hedgehog and its relative, the gymnure, to join with the other Laurasiatherian insectivores (mole and shrews). To quantify the stability of trees from this data we define, based on nuclear sequences, a major four-way split in Laurasiatherians. This ([Xenarthra, Afrotheria], [Laurasiatheria, Supraprimates]) split is also found from mitochondrial genomes using either protein-coding or RNA (rRNA and tRNA) data sets. The high similarity of the mitochondrial and nuclear-derived trees allows a quantitative estimate of the stability of trees from independent data sets, as detected from a triplet Markov analysis. There are significant changes in the mutational processes within placental mammals that are ignored by current tree programs. On the basis of our quantitative results, we expect the evolutionary tree for mammals to be resolved quickly, and this will allow other problems to be solved.  相似文献

The use of tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) in human disease studies demands essential research tools, in particular cellular markers and their monoclonal antibodies for immunological studies. Here we cloned the full-length cDNAs encoding CD3E from total RNA of the spleen, liver and peripheral blood of tree shrews and analyzed their structural characteristics in comparison with other mammals by Discovery Studio software. The results showed that the open reading frame sequence of tree shrew CD3E was 582 bp, encoding 194 amino acids. The overall structure of tree shrew CD3E protein was similar to its counterparts of other mammals, intracellular and transmembrane domain highly conserved. However, detailed analysis revealed two potential glycosylation sites and different surface charges in the extracellular domain. Availability of the entire open-reading-frame and related sequence information would therefore facilitate the preparation of monoclonal antibodies against tree shrew CD3 and further studies for its function.  相似文献

We investigated the interaction of the cesium ion (Cs(+)) with the anionic intracellular components of human red blood cells (RBCs); the components studied included 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG), ADP, ATP, inorganic phosphate (P(i)), carbonmonoxy hemoglobin (COHb), and RBC membranes. We used spin-lattice (T(1)) and spin-spin (T(2)) (133)Cs NMR relaxation measurements to probe Cs(+) binding, and we found that Cs(+) bound more strongly to binding sites in BPG and in RBC membranes than in any other intracellular component in RBCs at physiologic concentrations. By using James-Noggle plots, we obtained Cs(+) binding constants per binding site in BPG (66 +/- 8 M(-1)), ADP (19 +/- 1 M(-1)), ATP (25 +/- 3 M(-1)), and RBC membranes (55 +/- 2 M(-1)) from the observed T(1) values. We also studied the effect of Cs(+) on the oxygen (O(2)) affinity of purified Hb and of Hb in intact RBCs in the absence and in the presence of BPG. In the absence of BPG, the O(2) affinity of Hb decreased upon addition of Cs(+). However, in the presence of BPG, the O(2) affinity of Hb increased upon addition of Cs(+). The O(2) affinity of Cs(+)-loaded human RBCs was larger than that of Cs(+)-free cells at the same BPG level. (31)P NMR studies on the pH dependence of the interaction between BPG and Hb indicated that the presence of Cs(+) resulted in a smaller fraction of BPG available to bind to the cleft of deoxyHb. Our NMR and O(2) affinity data indicate that a strong binding site for Cs(+) in human RBCs is BPG. A partial mechanism for Cs(+) toxicity might arise from competition between Cs(+) and deoxyHb for BPG, thereby increasing oxygenation of Hb in RBCs, and thus decreasing the ability of RBCs to give up oxygen in tissues. The presence of Cs(+) at 12.5 mM in intact human RBCs containing BPG at normal concentrations did not, however, alter significantly the O(2) affinity of Hb, thus ruling out the possibility of Cs(+)-BPG interactions accounting for Cs(+) toxicity in this cell type.  相似文献

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) stimulates feeding, depresses sexual behavior, and its expression in the brain is modulated by energetic status. We examined the role of NPY in female musk shrews, a species with high energetic and reproductive demands; they store little fat, and small changes in energy can rapidly diminish or enhance sexual receptivity. Intracerebroventricular infusion of NPY enhanced acute food intake in shrews; however, NPY had little affect on sexual receptivity. The distribution of NPY immunoreactivity in the female musk shrew brain was unremarkable, but energy status differentially affected NPY immunoreactivity in several regions. Similar to what has been noted in other species, NPY immunoreactivity was less dense in brains of ad libitum shrews and greater in shrews subjected to food restriction. In two midbrain regions, both of which contain high levels of gonadotropin releasing hormone II (GnRH II), which has anorexigenic actions in shrews, NPY immunoreactivity was more sensitive to changes in food intake. In these regions, acute re-feeding (90-180 min) after food restriction reduced NPY immunoreactivity to levels noted in ad libitum shrews. We hypothesize that interactions between NPY and GnRH II maintain energy homeostasis and reproduction in the musk shrew.  相似文献

The water shrew population was studied in Ust-Urgulca (Novosibirsk Province) in 1978-1990; abundance, sex and age structure, reproduction rate of this animal and its helminth fauna were examined. It was found that the abiotic factors (in particular the water level of habitat areas) influenced on the water shrew populations. The number of water shrews increased when the high water level increased. In these conditions, the population of the water shrew rejuvenated and the numbers of females increased with some increasing their fertility. In the helminthes fauna associated with the water shrew, predominated the parasite species developing in water invertebrates or ones living near water basins. When water habitats dried out, the number of water shrews decreased and individuals retained only in some areas and the population became old.  相似文献

Although competition and predation are considered to be among the most important biotic processes influencing the distribution and abundance of species in space and time, the relative and interactive roles of these processes in communities comprised of cyclically fluctuating populations of small mammals are not well known. We examined these processes in and among populations of field voles, sibling voles, bank voles and common shrews in western Finland, using spatially replicated trapping data collected four times a year during two vole cycles (1987–1990 and 1997–1999). Populations of the four species exhibited relatively strong interspecific temporal synchrony in their multiannual fluctuations. During peak phases, we observed slight deviations from close temporal synchrony: field vole densities peaked at least two months earlier than those of either sibling voles or bank voles, while densities of common shrews peaked even earlier. The growth rates of all four coexisting small mammal species were best explained by their own current densities. The growth rate of bank vole populations was negatively related to increasing densities of field voles in the increase phase of the vole cycle. Apart from this, no negative effects of interspecific density, direct or delayed, were observed among the vole species. The growth rates of common shrew populations were negatively related to increasing total rodent (including water voles and harvest mice) densities in the peak phase of the vole cycle. Sibling voles appeared not to be competitively superior to field voles on a population level, as neither of these Microtus voles increased disproportionately in abundance as total rodent density increased. We suggest that interspecific competition among the vole species may occur, but only briefly, during the autumn of peak years, when the total available amount of rodent habitat becomes markedly reduced following agricultural practices. Our results nonetheless indicate that interspecific competition is not a strong determinant of the structure of communities comprised of species exhibiting cyclic dynamics. We suggest that external factors, namely predation and shortage of food, limit densities of vole populations below levels where interspecific competition occurs. Common shrews, however, appear to suffer from asymmetric space competition with rodents at peak densities of voles; this may be viewed as a synchronizing effect.  相似文献
