In Japan the River Law was amended in 1997 to expand the traditional roles of flood control and water supply in river management to include environmental conservation. Two major multidisciplinary research groups were also founded to address the environmental issues arising from the management of rivers and watershed areas in Japan. One called the River Ecology Research Group was formed in 1995 to search for an ideal dynamic state of rivers to be managed. Six case studies commenced involving measurements of natural and human impacts on representative rivers and their biota selected from different regions of the country. Restoration of natural rivers has also been attempted. The other, called the Watershed Ecology Research Group, was formed in 1998 to study the natural environment surrounding dams. It consists of four groups concerned with forest ecology in the headwaters, raptor management research, reservoir ecology, and flow regime research. The topics include modeling of regeneration dynamics of riparian forests, GIS mapping of endangered raptor habitats, developing measures to reduce eutrophication of reservoir water, and the use of biodiversity of benthic faunas as an indicator of environmental change in the downstream. In both groups, ecologists collaborate with engineers who are responsible for the river infrastructure, to predict future impacts and keep ecological perspectives for the maintenance of the healthy environment of rivers and reservoirs.  相似文献

海河流域水体沉积物碳、氮、磷分布与污染评价   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
从全流域尺度上研究海河流域水体沉积物碳、氮、磷元素含量与分布特征,对研究海河流域水环境污染现状具有重要意义.本研究采集海河流域河流与水库163个表层沉积物(0~10 cm)样品,测定沉积物有机碳(TOC)、总氮(TN)、总磷(TP)的含量,运用有机指数与有机氮方法评价沉积物污染状况.结果表明: 海河流域沉积物TOC、TN、TP含量具有较大的空间异质性,下游平原区明显高于山区,北四河下游平原、黑龙港及运东平原含量较高,永定河山区、北三河山区、滦河流域含量相对较低,河流沉积物TOC含量显著高于水库沉积物,而TN、TP含量与水库沉积物没有显著差异.TN与TOC、TP含量呈显著正相关(r=0.704,P<0.01;r=0.250,P<0.01).全流域有机指数总体属于“较清洁”水平,北四河下游平原总体已接近有机污染水平.全流域有机氮总体处在“尚清洁”水平,北四河下游平原、黑龙港及运东平原流域存在有机氮污染.海河流域河流、水库沉积物具有相似的污染强度.沉积物C/N平均值为12.71,表明TOC多来源于藻类等浮游动植物,其次是高等植物,水库C/N值比河流高,陆源物质输入对水库沉积物TOC的贡献比对河流大.  相似文献

The European grayling Thymallus thymallus is widely distributed in Austria, occurring in all eight rural provinces. However, in recent years, an increasing number of studies report severe declines in population sizes. Since 1997, the grayling has had the status of an endangered species in Austria. In 1997 the multidisciplinary research programme 'Local Adaptation, Threat, and Conservation of European Grayling' has carried out three projects in Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Carinthia. Research has included repeated electro-fishing in selected stretches of eight rivers and the collection of data on habitat characteristics, fish species composition, population abundance and size distribution, growth and body condition, as well reproductive timing, and migratory activities of grayling. Furthermore, genetic and morphological variation among grayling populations has been studied as well as the number, habitat use and feeding activity of cormorants. Evidence is provided for the existence of distinct negative effects caused by single factors or combinations of factors on grayling stocks in each of the river stretches studied.  相似文献

1. Grazer control of phytoplankton and water transparency was responsive to interannual variations in river discharge and corresponding water retention time in Ford Lake, Michigan, U.S.A. 2. A simple mathematical model was developed to separate the effects of washout from in situ zooplankton population dynamics. The threshold reservoir flushing time for development of a large Daphnia population and corresponding clear water phase during May was about 20 days. Predation by Leptodora was insufficient to cause the subsequent decline of the Daphnia population. 3. Recruitment success by the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha appeared responsive to flushing time indirectly, through hydrological effects on the magnitude of the spring diatom crop.  相似文献

Changes in fish densities recorded over 14 years (1996–2009) were studied for effects of long-term variation of the hydrologic regime. We collected field data with an echo sounder in scour holes of minor channels draining an area of floodplain in the middle reach of the Paraná River. Fish densities in 2000–2009 were significantly lower than in the previous decade. The decrease was associated with a marked reduction of water levels, flood magnitudes and connectivity of channels with the nearby floodplain lakes. This distortion of the flood pulse likely had an effect on the life history strategies of the fishes. The effects of damming in the upstream basin and other man-made perturbations are minor in the middle reach. However, the decadal alterations of regime are intimately linked to climate fluctuations in the Paraná River basin during the past century. Tendencies of observed fish densities are similar to results reported in literature on the influence on fishes for similar long-term alterations of the flood regime in river flood plain systems.  相似文献

Abstract The present study seeks to identify the expansion process of the shrub Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb. (Elaeagnaceae) on a gravel bar in the Naka River, Shikoku, Japan, in relation to the hydrogeomorphologic regime of the habitat. The establishment pattern was determined by a series of aerial photographs, and the establishment years were confirmed by examining tree rings taken from five different areas within the population. The topographic change of the river cross-section was analyzed and it was found that the establishment occurred exactly when and where the riverbed began to stabilize. The three cohorts of 15-, 10- and 4-year-olds were recognized, the younger individuals being downstream. The episodic age pattern was significantly synchronized with large floods occurring during the autumn fruit-ripening season. These spatial and temporal occurrence patterns indicated the probability of hydrochory, which ultimately enhanced the dissemination of endozoochorous E. umbellata seeds into the newly created habitat on the downstream part of the gravel bar. Another cause of quick dominance was its vigorous sprouting ability, which enabled the established E. umbellata to withstand damage and sediment burial by strong floods. The erosion of the deepest part of the riverbed increased the relative elevation of the vegetated stand, which ultimately decreased the frequency and magnitude of disturbance during flood inundation after the 1980s. Consequently the hydrogeomorphic regime of the floods played an important role in habitat creation, seed dispersal, and in the survival of the established individuals, and it determined the population formation and expansion of E. umbellata on the riparian gravel bar.  相似文献

为了解污染源对水库富营养化的影响,于2000年的枯水期(6~7月)与丰水期(11~12月)对三座污染类型的水库:石岩水库、大镜山水库、大水桥水库进行采样,测定和分析水库的营养盐及浮游生物。根据相关加权的综合营养状态指数评估,石岩水库为富营养型水库,大镜山水库与大水桥水库为中-富营养型水库。这三座水库污染源不同,其富营养特征差异较为明显,特别是营养水平的季节动态不同。石岩水库的主要污染源为城镇生活污水,其主要富营养特点为:各种营养盐浓度、浮游生物丰度及COD值在三个水库中最高,有机污染严重;丰枯两期均有种类较多、丰度较高的耐污藻类--裸藻(Euglena Ehr.);枯水期富营养水平明显高于丰水期。大水桥水库主要受农业活动污染,其主要富营养特点为:受地表径流影响显著,PO4-P和TP浓度以及浮游生物丰度丰枯两期差异比较明显,均为丰水期高于枯水期;丰水期浮游植物主要以蓝藻为主,枯水期则以硅藻为主。大镜山水库污染来源主要为其调水河流前山河,受工业污水污染比较严重,生活废水的污染也较为突出,其主要富营养特点为:总磷浓度及浮游动物丰度枯丰两期差异较为明显,受河流调水控制。  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation is a growing problem worldwide. Particularly in river systems, numerous dams and weirs hamper the movement of a wide variety of species. With the aim to preserve connectivity for fish, many barriers in river systems are equipped with fishways (also called fish passages or fish ladders). However, few fishways provide full connectivity. Here we hypothesized that restricted seasonal opening times of fishways can importantly reduce their effectiveness by interfering with the timing of fish migration, for both spring‐ and autumn‐spawning species. We empirically tested our hypothesis, and discuss the possible eco‐evolutionary consequences of affected migration timing. We analyzed movements of two salmonid fishes, spring‐spawning European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) and autumn‐spawning brown trout (Salmo trutta), in Norway's two largest river systems. We compared their timing of upstream passage through four fishways collected over 28 years with the timing of fish movements in unfragmented river sections as monitored by radiotelemetry. Confirming our hypothesis, late opening of fishways delayed the migration of European grayling in spring, and early closure of fishways blocked migration for brown trout on their way to spawning locations during late autumn. We show in a theoretical framework how restricted opening times of fishways can induce shifts from migratory to resident behavior in potamodromous partial migration systems, and propose that this can induce density‐dependent effects among fish accumulating in lower regions of rivers. Hence, fragmentation may not only directly affect the migratory individuals in the population, but may also have effects that cascade downstream and alter circumstances for resident fish. Fishway functionality is inadequate if there is a mismatch between natural fish movements and fishway opening times in the same river system, with ecological and possibly evolutionary consequences for fish populations.  相似文献

The scheme is briefly described. The success of the Kielder and Bakethin reservoir fisheries is examined. The poor condition of trout in Kielder reservoir is considered in relation to physical and chemical factors including water turbidity, low nutrient levels and the location of the reservoirs.
The performance of Kielder hatchery and the difficulties of collecting broodstock of Tyne origin are described.
The effects of water releases from Kielder reservoir upon the salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout Salmo trutta L., fisheries within the River North Tyne and examined. Aspects considered include modified water temperature regimes, water chemistry and the magnitude and timing of releases for river regulation and generation of hydroelectric power.
The problems associated with fish passage at Riding Mill weir, the point of water transfer to the River Wear and River Tees, are examined and the progress of inter-river transfers is described.  相似文献

Behaviour of early life stages of the salmonid European grayling Thymallus thymallus was investigated by assessing the timing of larval downstream movement from spawning areas, the depth at which larvae moved and the distribution of juvenile fish during summer in two large connected river systems in Norway. Trapping of larvae moving downstream and electrofishing surveys revealed that T. thymallus larvae emerging from the spawning gravel moved downstream predominantly during the night, despite light levels sufficient for orientation in the high‐latitude study area. Larvae moved in the water mostly at the bottom layer close to the substratum, while drifting debris was caught in all layers of the water column. Few young‐of‐the‐year still resided close to the spawning areas in autumn, suggesting large‐scale movement (several km). Together, these observations show that there may be a deliberate, active component to downstream movement of T. thymallus during early life stages. This research signifies the importance of longitudinal connectivity for T. thymallus in Nordic large river systems. Human alterations of flow regimes and the construction of reservoirs for hydropower may not only affect the movement of adult fish, but may already interfere with active movement behaviour of fish during early life stages.  相似文献

1. Perturbation pathways affecting interactions between feeding habitat, food supplies and diet of a lotic avian predator, blue duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos Gemlin), were tracked in a New Zealand river following substantial inputs of sediment from a volcanic eruption. Sediment impacts were separated temporally into two distinct phases: (i) deposition of fine ash from volcanic fall‐out, and (ii) pulsed releases of volcanic sand and gravel retained by an upstream dam. 2. Levels of interstitial suspendable inorganic sediments increased by several orders of magnitude following ash inputs to the river, but returned to low levels within 3 months. Flushing of volcanic sand and gravel retained by the dam resulted in sediment deposition upstream of a large island where coarse material lodged firmly between larger benthic substratum elements in blue duck feeding habitat. 3. Changes in algal biomass appeared to largely reflect seasonal and hydrological influences, but the percentage inorganic content of periphyton increased significantly during both posteruption phases. 4. Diversity and abundance of blue duck food supplies on boulders and on the riverbed declined following the eruption, whereas significant impacts on biomass were only detected in benthic habitats which were more susceptible to sediment deposition. However, percent composition of the benthic and boulder invertebrate food resources appeared largely unaffected by the eruption. 5. There was no apparent association between the eruption and the composition or electivity (E*) of blue duck diet, but there was a significant increase in the percent inorganic content of faeces, suggesting a reduction in the quality of food rations. 6. Changes in food quantity and quality associated with deposition of volcanic sediments were linked to an observed decline in blue duck population density and fecundity following the eruption. An interacting continuum of adaptive responses to perturbation intensity and impact duration is proposed for blue duck, and potentially other long‐lived, riverine birds, that enable them to cope with disturbances in highly variable and heterogenous lotic environments.  相似文献

Water levels in many reservoirs typically fluctuate seasonally, but the effects of re-inundation of exposed sediments on nutrient dynamics in the water column are poorly known. This study concerns the seasonal differences in the potential of sediments from two Australian reservoirs, after having undergone different degrees of in situ desiccation, to release P under aerobic conditions. Differences were determined between biotic and abiotic P release, and results were also examined in relation to sediment chemistry. The two reservoirs, Carcoar Dam and Lake Rowlands, demonstrated different patterns of P release involving an interactive complex of P release mechanisms. Sediment chemistry at the reservoir margins was important because of the higher concentrations of N, P, Fe and Mn in Lake Rowlands. Physical and chemical processes influenced P uptake and release due to desiccation and oxidation of sediments and were of greater importance in Carcoar Dam. Abiotic P release from sterilised sediments was greater than from unsterilised sediments where both biotic and abiotic processes were apparent. Biotic P uptake and release were especially marked in Lake Rowlands where large macrophyte beds provided a rich source of organic matter. Little seasonal difference in P release was detected. The increased P release from dried sediments has ramifications for internal P loading into reservoirs and for the calculation of P budgets. For managers of reservoirs where large expanses of sediment are exposed during drying, it may be better to maintain high water levels, where possible, during the summer by modifying drawdown practices.  相似文献

The phosphorus status and distribution of sediments in a hypertrophic water supply reservoir (Hartbeespoort Dam) were investigated, with a view to assessing the role of sediments in counteracting the effects of reduced external phosphorus loading as a restoration measure. In comparison with similar water bodies in South Africa, the sediments in Hartbeespoort Dam contained high levels of both total and potentially mobile phosphorus. The potentially mobile fraction constituted about 60% of the total phosphorus content of the sediments, compared with about 11% in other reservoirs. The excessive eutrophication of Hartbeespoort Dam is clearly reflected in the phosphorus status of the sediments. Sediment distribution in the impoundment was found to be extremely heterogeneous, due to the combined influences of morphometry, hydrology and an imbalance in the nutrient loads entering via rivers at remote points in the water body. It is concluded that sufficient mobile phosphorus has accumulated in the sediments to prolong the response time of the impoundment to phosphorus load reductions. Since phosphorus release from sediments is dependent on dynamic processes not addressed in this study, the extent of the delays in trophic response to load reduction cannot be estimated.  相似文献

1. Riparian vegetation in dry regions is influenced by low‐flow and high‐flow components of the surface and groundwater flow regimes. The duration of no‐flow periods in the surface stream controls vegetation structure along the low‐flow channel, while depth, magnitude and rate of groundwater decline influence phreatophytic vegetation in the floodplain. Flood flows influence vegetation along channels and floodplains by increasing water availability and by creating ecosystem disturbance. 2. On reference rivers in Arizona's Sonoran Desert region, the combination of perennial stream flows, shallow groundwater in the riparian (stream) aquifer, and frequent flooding results in high plant species diversity and landscape heterogeneity and an abundance of pioneer wetland plant species in the floodplain. Vegetation changes on hydrologically altered river reaches are varied, given the great extent of flow regime changes ranging from stream and aquifer dewatering on reaches affected by stream diversion and groundwater pumping to altered timing, frequency, and magnitude of flood flows on reaches downstream of flow‐regulating dams. 3. As stream flows become more intermittent, diversity and cover of herbaceous species along the low‐flow channel decline. As groundwater deepens, diversity of riparian plant species (particularly perennial species) and landscape patches are reduced and species composition in the floodplain shifts from wetland pioneer trees (Populus, Salix) to more drought‐tolerant shrub species including Tamarix (introduced) and Bebbia. 4. On impounded rivers, changes in flood timing can simplify landscape patch structure and shift species composition from mixed forests composed of Populus and Salix, which have narrow regeneration windows, to the more reproductively opportunistic Tamarix. If flows are not diverted, suppression of flooding can result in increased density of riparian vegetation, leading in some cases to very high abundance of Tamarix patches. Coarsening of sediments in river reaches below dams, associated with sediment retention in reservoirs, contributes to reduced cover and richness of herbaceous vegetation by reducing water and nutrient‐holding capacity of soils. 5. These changes have implications for river restoration. They suggest that patch diversity, riparian plant species diversity, and abundance of flood‐dependent wetland tree species such as Populus and Salix can be increased by restoring fluvial dynamics on flood‐suppressed rivers and by increasing water availability in rivers subject to water diversion or withdrawal. On impounded rivers, restoration of plant species diversity also may hinge on restoration of sediment transport. 6. Determining the causes of vegetation change is critical for determining riparian restoration strategies. Of the many riparian restoration efforts underway in south‐western United States, some focus on re‐establishing hydrogeomorphic processes by restoring appropriate flows of surface water, groundwater and sediment, while many others focus on manipulating vegetation structure by planting trees (e.g. Populus) or removing trees (e.g. Tamarix). The latter approaches, in and of themselves, may not yield desired restoration outcomes if the tree species are indicators, rather than prime causes, of underlying changes in the physical environment.  相似文献

Understanding complex, dynamic, and diverse ecosystems is essential for developing sound management and conservation strategies. Gravel-bed river floodplains are composed of an interlinked mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial habitats hosting a diverse, specialized, and endangered fauna. Therefore, they serve as excellent models to investigate the biodiversity of multiple ecotones and related edge effects. In this study, we investigated the abundance, composition, richness, and conservation status of beetle assemblages at varying sediment depth (0, 0.1, 0.6 and 1.1 m), distance from the channel (1, 5, 20, and 60–100 m, and 5 m within the riparian forest), and time of the year (February–November) across a 200 m-wide gravel bar at the near-natural Tagliamento River (Italy), to detect edge effects in four floodplain ecotones: aquatic-terrestrial, forest-active floodplain, sediment-air, and sediment-groundwater. We used conventional pitfall traps and novel tube traps to sample beetles comparably on the sediment surface and within the unsaturated sediments. We found a total of 308 beetle species (including 87 of conservation concern) that showed multiple, significant positive edge effects across the floodplain ecotones, mainly driven by spatial heterogeneity: Total and red list beetle abundance and richness peaked on the sediment surface, at channel margins, and at the edge of the riparian forest. All ecotones possessed edge/habitat specialists. Most red list species occurred on the sediment surface, including five species previously considered extinct – yet two of these species occurred in higher densities in the unsaturated sediments. Conservation and management efforts along gravel-bed rivers must therefore promote a dynamic flow and sediment regime to create and maintain habitat heterogeneity and ecotone diversity, which support a unique and high biodiversity.  相似文献

This article focuses on assessing the habitats characteristics of endangered Calamagrostis pseudophragmites in selected localities in the Czech Republic with different river engineering measures, which can potentially influence the occurrence of this species. Furthermore, we give some general recommendations for management practices based on our results to promote the conservation of Calamagrostis pseudophragmites.Our research shows that there is a high correlation between Calamagrostis pseudophragmites and natural or near natural sunny biotopes on gravel bars or straight reaches near the water level that consist of non-silted gravel substrates with a higher concentration of pebbles or cobbles, which are typical of piedmont and mountain-valley areas. Many of these areas are rapidly disappearing due to intensive anthropogenic pressure. We also found that Calamagrostis pseudophragmites is temporarily capable of surviving among other competitively stronger plant communities.To assess the potential influence of river engineering we selected two different types of rivers where this species is present – one was heavily altered by both the construction of a water reservoir in its upper reach and channelization of the stream, the other was less severely regulated by the construction of several weirs. Our results show differences in the occurrence of Calamagrostis pseudophragmites between the two rivers, being found at three times as many localities in the less regulated river than in the more regulated one. This corresponds with a higher number of gravel bars in the less regulated river.Based on our results, our general recommendations for the management of this species include only the partial removal of gravel bars (to ensure flood control in populated areas), blocking vegetation succession by removing woody vegetation and aggressive invasive species, the restoration of natural river dynamics, and connecting existing biotopes where this species is found.  相似文献

The northern part of the peri-Adriatic river system is inhabited by a native grayling population. In comparison with the Danubian population most of the Adriatic population is regarded as morphologically distinct and therefore recognized as racially differentiated. DNA sequence analysis of the 394-bp fragment of the mtDNA control region and 363-bp fragment of the cytochrome b gene region from grayling specimens of the Adriatic, Danubian and Atlantic river systems revealed nine composite mtDNA haplotypes. The genetic divergence of the Adriatic and the Danubian-Atlantic haplotypes ranged from 2.52 to 3.10% and from 3.38 to 3.92% in the cytochrome b gene and control region, respectively. On the basis of sequence data an attempt was made to elucidate the phylogeography of the Adriatic population. The molecular data indicate an ancient monophyletic origin and also confirm its distinct position within the Thymallus thymallus species, in spite of the fact that stocking with the Danubian type occurred in the Adriatic river system. Therefore the Adriatic population deserves special attention. As a first step in its preservation, its formal distinction by using the name Adriatic grayling is proposed.  相似文献

1. We investigated the effects of a flood on the fauna and physical habitat of the hyporheic zone of the Kye Burn, a fourth order gravel‐bed stream in New Zealand. 2. Freeze core hyporheic samples (to 50 cm depth) and benthic samples (to 10 cm) were taken, along with measurements of vertical hydrological gradient, before, 2 days after and 1 month after the flood (estimated return period: 1.5 years, estimated Qmax = 10.4 m3 s?1). 3. The composition of the hyporheos differed over the three sampling occasions with fewer taxa collected immediately postflood than preflood. The equitability of the community was higher on both postflood occasions, consistent with the reduced densities of two abundant taxa (Leptophlebiidae and Copepoda). 4. Total invertebrate abundance was lower on the postflood occasions than preflood in both benthic (0–10 cm) and hyporheic (10–50 cm) sediments. Several taxa, including asellotan isopods and amphipods, recovered within 1 month of the event. Hyporheic densities of larval Hydora and nematodes did not differ among the three sampling occasions, but the water mite Pseudotryssaturus was more abundant 1 month after the flood than preflood. There was no evidence of vertical movements (to 50 cm) by any taxa in response to the flood. 5. The proportion of fine sediments (<1 mm) in the subsurface sediments (10–50 cm) increased over the three sampling occasions and median particle size declined, but sediment porosity did not change. More particulate organic matter was found in the sediments after the flood. 6. Our study provides little evidence that the hyporheic zone (to 50 cm) acted as a significant refuge during the flood event, although movements to or recolonisation from sediments deeper than 50 cm could explain the recovery of many crustacean and mite taxa within 1 month.  相似文献
