Onchocerciasis in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Saudi Arabia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
During a survey in 1980-81, 125 of 478 (26.2%) camels in Saudi Arabia were found infected with onchocerciasis. The prevalence rates in local and imported camels were 93/272 (34.2%) and 32/206 (15.5%), respectively. The disease was characterized by hard nodules in the connective tissue around the nuchal ligaments and in the subcutis. The nodules consisted of cavities containing live, degenerate or dead Onchocerca fasciata, inflammatory cells, fibrosis and calcification. The microfilariae were concentrated in the skin over the head and neck regions and often caused mild non-suppurative dermatitis.  相似文献

Ovarian follicular dynamics was monitored by transrectal ultrasonography, for a period of 60 to 90 days, and its correlation with plasma estradiol-17β (E2) and progesterone (P4) were studied in seventeen, multiparous, non-lactating, 12 to 20-year-old dromedary camels. The average number of follicles recruited (12.77 ± 0.93) in each wave between animals varied (P < 0.001). The number of follicles recruited during different follicular waves was highly repeatable (0.95) within individual animals. The growth and mature phase periods of the dominant follicle (DF) were 6.10 ± 0.15 and 10.20 ± 0.47 days, respectively with a linear growth rate of 1.17 ± 0.02 mm/day between Day 0 and 10 of the follicular wave. There was an inverse relationship between the diameter of the largest DF and number of follicles (r = −0.95, P < 0.001). The DF development did not regularly alternate between the ovaries and the incidence of codominance was 45%. The mean maximum diameter of DF during its mature phase was 27.30 ± 0.78 mm and oversized follicle was 38.43 ± 1.41 mm. In 73.3% waves, the DF continued its growth for a period of 10.64 ± 1.53 days even after losing its dominance and developed into oversized follicle. The duration of the regression phase of DF and oversized follicle were 24.71 ± 3.79 and 18.50 ± 2.23 days. The mean duration of a complete follicular wave was 47.11 ± 2.94 days with an interwave interval (IWI) of 16.36 ± 0.37 days. The IWI within an individual was repeatable (0.88) and between the animals was variable (P < 0.001). Plasma E2 concentration profiles showed a wave like pattern. The peak plasma E2 concentrations were attained approximately 12 days after beginning of the growth phase, when the largest DF grew to a diameter of 18.7 mm. Plasma concentration of P4 was below 1.0 ng/mL in 85% of waves and above 1.0 ng/mL in 15% of the waves for a period of 3 to 6 days in the absence of spontaneous ovulation. It is concluded that ovarian follicular development and plasma E2 concentrations occurs in a wave like pattern in dromedary camels and the IWI and follicle numbers recruited per wave are variable between the animals and repeatable within an individual animal.  相似文献

In this study, we measured the concentration of some antioxidant substances in erythrocytes hemolysate, liver, kidney and brain in young and adult camels. It has been found that the activity of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the concentration of glutathione, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol are high in both young and adult camels. GSH-Px and CAT activities were higher in adult camels than in the young whereas no significant difference in the activity of SOD between young and adult camels was noticed. Glutathione was present in all tissues studied. Ascorbic acid was found to have significantly higher values in young camels. From this study it could be concluded that, as in other mammals, camel tissues contain a powerful antioxidant system. The liver has the highest contents of antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes indicating that it plays an important role in pro-oxidants detoxification. Age has a variable effect on the antioxidant system in camels.  相似文献

The camel racing industry would have added value in being able to assign parentage with high certainty. This study was aimed at assessing and applying microsatellite multiplexes to construct a parentage testing system for camels. An efficient system of 17 loci from 700 camel samples was used to construct a database of unrelated adults. Based on this, we estimated measures of polymorphism among the markers. In three multiplex reactions, we detected a total of 224 alleles, with 5–23 alleles/locus (mean = 13.18 ± 6.95 SD) and an average heterozygosity (HE) of 0.54 (range 0.032–0.905). The total parentage exclusion probability was 0.99999 for excluding a candidate parent from parentage of an arbitrary offspring, given only the genotype of the offspring, and 0.9999 for excluding a candidate parent from parentage of an arbitrary offspring, given the genotype of the offspring and the other parent. We used 15 juveniles for parentage testing, as well as 17 sires (bull camels) and 21 dams (cows). In the case of parentage assignment, the microsatellite panel assigned all 15 offspring parentage with high confidence. Overall, these findings offer a set of microsatellite markers that are easy, simple and highly informative for parentage testing in camels.  相似文献

Diarrhea and deaths in new-born camel calves were noticed by veterinary investigators and pastoralist in Saudi Arabia to be very high. Hence, it is thought to be necessary to investigate this problem from the virological and bacteriological point of view. The role of pathogenic bacteria and viruses in six different towns of North Province (Al-Assafia, Arar, Domat Aljandal, Hail, Skaka and Khoa) in Saudi Arabia was studied. Survey was conducted in diarrheic camel calves aged 12 months or younger. In our study calf diarrhea was reported in 184 out of 2308 camels examined clinically during one year, the prevalence of diarrhea was found to be 8.0% in calves ranging from one month to one year. In the present study group A rotavirus and Brucella abortus were detected in 14.7% and 8.98%, respectively, using ELISA technique. Escherichia coli was isolated from diarrheic calf camel (58.2%) 99/170 samples during dry and wet season. Salmonella spp. and Enterococcus spp. were detected in 12% and 8.8% of the specimens, respectively. In this study enterotoxogenic E. coli (ET E. coli) was isolated from 7% of diarrheic camel, which indicates the strong correlation between the camel calf diarrhea and the detection of enterotoxogenic E. coli. This study represented the first report for the detection of group A rotavirus and B. abortus antigen and antibodies in calf camels in Saudi Arabia. It is recommended that the disease should be controlled by vaccination in calf camels.  相似文献

Faeces of 228 domestic goats (Capra hircus) from the central region of Saudi Arabia were examined for the presence of coccidian oocysts. Ten species of coccidia were identified and described. A total of 90.3% of the specimens were positive, most of them contained 100-1000 oocysts per g of faecal sample. Kids less than 1 year old had higher oocyst counts than goatlings or adult goats. Mixed infections with three to five species were found in 69.7% of the specimens and six to eight species were found in 10.1%. Eimeria arloingi and E. hirci were most prevalent. E. alijevi, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. caprina, E. christenseni and E. apsheronica were less common. E. jolchijevi, E. caprovina and E. punctata were relatively rare.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the cumulus morphology and the oocyte chromatin quality of camel cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) at the time of recovery, and to monitor changes in oocyte chromatin configuration and apoptosis in cumulus cells from camel COCs during in vitro maturation (IVM) (0, 12, 24, 32, 36, 42, and 48 p.IVM) depending on pregnancy of donors. A total of 1023 COCs were isolated from sliced ovaries after slaughtering of 47 pregnant and 43 non-pregnant camels in an abattoir. The mean number of COCs per donor was 10.3 in pregnant and 12.5 in non-pregnant donors. The cumulus morphology of COCs was independent of the type of donor and was divided in COCs with compact (26.9 and 28%), dispersed (39.3 and 46%), corona radiata cumulus investment (27.9 and 21.7%) and without cumulus (6 and 4.2%), respectively for pregnant and non-pregnant donors. The highest proportion of COCs exhibited dispersed cumulus (P<0.05). Oocytes with meiotic stages of diplotene >50% were found only in compact (55 and 56.5%) and in dispersed COCs (58.4 and 60%), respectively for pregnant and non-pregnant donors. During IVM (0-48h) the first significant onset of specific meiotic stages were different in oocytes from pregnant donors: metaphase 1 (24-32h), metaphase 2 (36-42h), versus oocytes from non-pregnant donors: metaphase 1 (24h), metaphase 2 (32-48h) (P<0.05). The level of apoptotic cells in cumuli of matured COCs increased during IVM and was higher in matured COCs from non-pregnant donors for each time point during IVM (P<0.01). Camel oocytes meiosis during IVM is accompanied by a drastic increase of apoptosis in the surrounding cumulus cells 0-32 and 0-24h during IVM, respectively for pregnant and non-pregnant donors. The oocytes of pregnant camels require 36h of maturation to reach levels of >50% metaphase 2 stage in comparison to oocytes from non-pregnant donors where 32h are sufficient. The earlier onset of apoptosis in the COCs derived from non-pregnant donors possibly determines the faster progression of the oocytes through the final stages of meiosis.  相似文献

The ovarian follicular wave patterns of sixty adult female camels were monitored by serial trans-rectal ultrasound examinations and when the dominant follicle reached 1.3-1.8 cm in diameter they received a single intravenous injection of 20 microg buserelin, to induce ovulation, and were inseminated with a known number of spermatozoa 24 h later. Ejaculates were collected from the male camels and diluted 1:1 in Green Buffer with 20% egg yolk (v:v) added. Sperm concentration and motility were assessed and a dose of 40, 80 or 150 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa were deposited either just through the cervix into the uterine body or at the tip of the horn ipsilateral with the ovary containing the dominant follicle. Insemination of 150, 80 and 40 x 10(6) spermatozoa into the uterine body resulted in conception rates of 53, 7 and 0%, respectively, whereas insemination at the tip of the uterine horn resulted in conception rates of 43, 40 and 7%, respectively.  相似文献

The normal anatomy and morphological changes in the testis and epididymis, due to age and seasonal variations, were studied in camels (Camelus dromedarius) between 4 and 20 years of age. The testes had a dark gray colour and were situated in the perineum. The weight ranged from 32 to 225 g. The length and maximum cross-diameter were 6--13 and 3--6.5 cm, respectively. The maximum weight of the left testis in 12-year-old camels during the winter months (December to March) was 225 g, and the minimum weight in the camels of the same age group during the summer months (April to July) was 181 g. The seasonal influence on the weight of the testis was very profound in the camels of 9--14 years. The weight of the epidiymis ranged from 10 to 40 g; their weight increased in all age groups during the winter months.  相似文献

The occurrence of spontaneous ovulation in dromedaries was examined in two separate studies including 20 non-lactating, barren and 12 lactating dromedaries, respectively. Lactating camels were milked twice a day with an automatic bucket milking machine. Ovarian activity was monitored by repeated ultrasonography. Blood samples for progesterone were collected daily or two to three times a week. To compare CL development after spontaneous and induced ovulations, ovulation was induced by a GnRH analogue in eight lactating dromedaries. Spontaneous ovulation was observed in one non-lactating camel (1 of 20 camels, 5%; 1 of 70 follicular waves, 1.4%), whereas, spontaneous ovulation was detected more frequently in lactating dromedaries (5 of 12 camels, 41.7%; 13 of 91 follicular waves, 14.3%). In one lactating camel, spontaneous ovulation occurred repeatedly for nine times. There was a significant effect of type of ovulation (spontaneous versus induced, P < 0.05) and day (P < 0.001) on serum progesterone concentration. Mean serum progesterone levels and total progesterone production (AUC) were higher after induced ovulation. Luteal diameter and serum progesterone concentration were positively correlated (r = 0.71, P < 0.001), but there was a significant difference between morphological and functional development of the CL. In dromedaries, morphological development starts earlier, morphological regression starts later and last longer than functional development and regression of the CL. Compared to induced ovulation, functional development of the CL after spontaneous ovulation might be altered but the morphological development is not affected.  相似文献

Camels are said to be seasonal breeders, but the extent to which season interferes with food supply to affect ovarian function is not fully documented. Hence, the three aims of this study were: (1) to define the breeding season of camels maintained in semi-arid conditions in southern Morocco; (2) to relate the proportion of females with active ovaries (i.e., with follicles > 5 mm), with ovulatory (11-17 mm) or cystic (> 18 mm) follicles to age and body conditions score; (3) to study the consequences of the interactions between age and body conditions score on the proportion of females ovulating and conceiving; and (4) to compare follicular maturation, using in vitro steroidogenesis by intact follicles as a marker during the transition into the breeding season (October) and peak breeding season (March). There was a clear breeding season in the two flocks studied, since over 80-90% of the matings occurred during the period from mid-November to mid-April. Collection of ovaries at slaughter (n = 238) demonstrated a significant seasonal effect on the proportion of females with active ovaries (increasing from 73.5% in October-December to 89% in January-May), but no changes in the proportion of females with ovulatory follicles. Lean females (BCS < 2.5) had a delayed initiation of ovarian function in October-December. In addition, the proportion of females with cystic follicles was also affected by season (peaking during April-May). Neither age nor body condition modulated the frequency of cysts. Finally, the proportion of females conceiving increased steadily as season progressed (peaking at 57% in April-May). Body condition score did not affect this proportion, but young females (< or = 5 years old) had a low ability to conceive. Morphological features of large follicles were unaffected by season. Ovulatory follicles contained around 10(7) granulosa and theca cells. In vitro testosterone output by intact follicles was unrelated to follicle size and season. In vitro oestradiol output increased with increasing follicle size and was larger in follicles obtained during peak breeding season than at its initiation. This may indicate that early breeding season follicles display a low aromatase activity in their granulosa cells. Whether the low oestradiol output of early breeding season follicles is resulting in the low fertility observed at this period remains to be determined.  相似文献

Hydatid cysts were recovered from 35.2% (233/661) of camels (Camelus dromedarius) slaughtered in five different regions of Iran. The degree of prevalence between males (34.4%) and females (36.6%) was not statistically significant. The highest rate of infection (59.3%) was found in the Isfahan region (in the central part of Iran) while the lowest (25.7%) was found in Kerman province. The organ distribution of cysts was 49.4% in lungs alone, 30.0% in both liver and lungs, 14.6% in liver only and 6.0% in other organs. Therefore, the lungs were the predominant sites of the hydatid cyst. The range in the number of cysts was 1-48 in infected animals. The majority of the camels had 1-5 cysts, with 21.9%, 11.6% and 5.6% of infected camels having 6-10, 11-20 and 21 or more cysts respectively. There was a direct relationship between the rate and intensity of infection and host age. The fertility rate of lung cysts (69.7%) was higher than that of liver cysts (58.7%) and other organs (50.0%) whilst the viability rate of protoscoleces of liver fertile cysts (80.3%) was significantly higher than that of lung cysts (55.8%) and other organs (57.1%). The role of camels in the epidemiology of Echinococcus granulosus in Iran is discussed.  相似文献

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (M. ap) is the causative agent of paratuberculosis or Johne's disease (JD) in herbivores with potential involvement in cases of Crohn's disease in humans. JD is spread worldwide and is economically important for both beef and dairy industries. Generally, pathogenic ovine strains (M. ap-S) are mainly found in sheep while bovine strains (M. ap-C) infect other ruminants (e.g. cattle, goat, deer), as well as sheep. In an effort to characterize this emerging infection in dromedary/Arabian camels, we successfully cultured M. ap from several samples collected from infected camels suffering from chronic, intermittent diarrhea suggestive of JD. Gene-based typing of isolates indicated that all isolates belong to sheep lineage of strains of M. ap (M. ap-S), suggesting a putative transmission from infected sheep herds. Screening sheep and goat herds associated with camels identified the circulation of this type in sheep but not goats. The current genome-wide analysis recognizes these camel isolates as a sub-lineage of the sheep strain with a significant number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between sheep and camel isolates (~1000 SNPs). Such polymorphism could represent geographical differences among isolates or host adaptation of M. ap during camel infection. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to examine the genomic basis of this emerging infection in camels with implications on the evolution of this important pathogen. The sequenced genomes of M. ap isolates from camels will further assist our efforts to understand JD pathogenesis and the dynamic of disease transmission across animal species.  相似文献

There is a cyclical pattern of motility in compartments 1 and 2 of the forestomach of the camel which can be categorized into A- and B-contractions. An average motility cycle is composed of 7 A- and 5 B-contractions and lasts 5 min, including a pause of 2.3 min. The glandular sacs within the caudal sac of compartment 1 contract 1.7 sec earlier than the caudal sac. The proximal part of the canal between compartment 2 and 3 contracts 1.2 sec prior to the distal part. Forestomach motility is stimulated by distention of the cranial sac of compartment 1 and inhibited by distention of the tubiform portion of compartment 3.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to verify the clinical signs, incidence, location, etiology and pathology of ovarian hydrobursitis in infertile female camels and estimate the fertility after unilateral surgical ablation. Genital organs (n = 124) were examined in camels slaughtered at Makkah abattoir during Hajj of 2009. Infertile female camels (n = 142) presented for management to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia, were clinically examined and ultrasound-scanned for the diagnosis of genital abnormalities. Twenty eight camels diagnosed with ovarian hydrobursitis were further investigated for the effect of unilateral surgical ablation on breeding outcomes. Surgical ablation was carried on 14 cases (treated group), the remaining 14 cases were followed as controls (control group). Both groups were observed for breeding results: 90 days non-return rate (90d NRR) and calving rate (CR). Removed bursae were sent to the laboratory for histopathological investigation. Results showed that the incidence of ovarian hydrobursitis was 6.5% in slaughtered camels and 33.8% in infertile females. Camels with hydrobursitis were concurrently affected with pyometra, uterine and vaginal adhesions or purulent endometritis. Histopathology reported degeneration and hyperplasia of the lining epithelium, mononuclear cells infiltration, focal aggregation of inflammatory cells, cystic dilatation of multi-acinal structures, tiny hemorrhages, and presence of hemosiderin-laden macrophages. The 90d NRR and CR of the surgically-treated cases were 64.3% and 50%, respectively. None of the untreated cases conceived. These results confirmed that ovarian hydrobursitis causes infertility in dromedary female camels and is associated with inflammatory genital conditions and surgical ablation in unilaterally affected animals presents a potential treatment.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to elucidate the effect of progesterone (P4) from the induced corpus luteum (CL) on the characteristics of the dominant follicle (DF) in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius). Ovarian follicular and induced CL dynamics were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography in eight camels during the peak breeding season. The characteristics of the DF were monitored daily from the day of emergence into a wave, until it appeared to lose its dominance and the DF of a subsequent wave grew to a diameter of 13-17 mm. At this stage ovulation was induced by hCG and the DF was monitored every 8 h for 48 h. After ovulation, CL dynamics and follicular development (emergence of a new wave, growth and mature phase of the selected DF) were monitored daily. Blood samples were collected during each ultrasound examination to study the P4 profile in these animals. The CL developed to a maximum size (22.55 ± 3.24 mm) with a peak concentration of P4 (4.60 ± 2.57 ng/ml) 7 days after ovulation. The size of the CL was positively correlated with the P4 concentration (r = 0.612) during the different stages of the CL dynamics. The presence of CL did not affect the linear growth rate, duration of growth and mature phases of the DF. The development of the DF to its maximum size during its mature phase and inter-wave interval were not affected by the P4 secreted by the induced CL. In conclusion, there is no evidence from this study to suggest that P4 from induced CL altered the characteristics of a DF in dromedary camels.  相似文献

The occurrence of Chlamydophila abortus in female camels affected with ovarian hydrobursitis and a trial for medical treatment were studied. A total of 111 cases were included in two experiments. In Experiment 1, sera from 51 affected cases were tested for C. abortus antibody using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In Experiment 2, 60 female camels affected with bilateral ovarian hydrobursitis were divided into treated and control groups (n = 30 each). Based on the bursal diameter, females of both groups were subdivided into those having small (< 5 cm), medium (5-7 cm) or large (> 7 cm) bursae. Treated group received 20 mg/kg body weight oxytetracycline intramuscular, 4% lotagen intrauterine, and 500 μg cloprostenol intramuscular. Controls did not receive any treatment. All females were observed for 90 days non-return rate (NRR) and calving rate (CR). Antibodies against C. abortus were observed in 44/51 (86.3%) of the affected females. The 90 days NRR of the treated and control groups were 13/30 (43.3%) and 0/30 (0.0%), respectively, (P = 0.001), while the CR were 10/30 (33.3%) and 0/30 (0.0%), respectively, (P = 0.01). Based on bursal size, the 90 days NRR were 11/15 (73.3%), 2/7 (28.6%) and 0/8 (0.0%) for treated females having small, medium and large bursa, while the CR were 9/15 (60%), 1/7 (14.3%), and 0/8 (0.0%), respectively, (P = 0.01). In conclusion, it seems that C. abortus may be responsible for the spreading of the ovarian hydrobursitis syndrome in dromedaries. Small sized bursa could be medically treated.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to compare the efficiency of two ovarian follicular wave synchronization protocols coupled with fixed-time natural mating with that of random mating in dromedary camels. Dromedaries were assigned randomly to one of the three treatment groups. Group 1 animals (RM; n = 46) were mated randomly. Group 2 camels (1×GnRH-FTM; n = 46) were given a GnRH analog (Buserelin, 20 μg/animal, i.v.; Receptal, Intervet, Holland) at random, then were mated 14 days later. In Group 3 animals (2×GnRH-FTM; n = 41), random GnRH analog was followed by repeated GnRH injection 14 days later and fixed-time natural mating on Day 28. Transrectal examination and ultrasonography were performed at weekly intervals to evaluate ovarian follicular status, diagnose ovulation and pregnancy. Blood samples were collected for progesterone determination by ELISA to confirm ovulation and pregnancy. All female dromedaries were assigned randomly to one of thirteen fertile bulls and were bred once on Days 1, 14 and 28 in Groups 1-3, respectively. Ovarian follicular status and ovulation rate was similar among groups at the start of the study. Seventy-five of the 133 dromedaries (56.4%) ovulated after random natural mating or random GnRH treatment. Mean length of mating was 386 ± 17.8 (±SEM) seconds. There was no significant difference in mating time among groups and in pregnancy rate among dromedary bulls. In Group 3 (2×GnRH-FTM), ovarian follicular status before mating (P < 0.05), ovulation rate (n = 37, 90.2%, P < 0.001) and pregnancy rate at 21 and 60 days (PR 21 days n = 22, 53.7% and PR 60 days n = 19, 46.3%, P < 0.05) were greater compared to random natural mating (Group 1: OR n = 25, 54.3%, PR 21 days n = 13, 28.3% and PR 60 days n = 12, 26.1%). In Group 2 dromedaries (1×GnRH-FTM), treatment tended to improve follicular status before mating, ovulation rate (n = 34, 73.9%) and pregnancy rate at 21 and 60 days (PR 21 days n = 21, 45.7% and PR 60 days n = 16, 34.8%), but the effect was not significant compared to random natural mating. In conclusion, this is the first study demonstrating that favorable pregnancy rate can be achieved following ovarian follicular wave synchronization with repeated GnRH analog and fixed-time natural mating at 14 days intervals in dromedary camels.  相似文献
