Growth rings present in whole and sectioned statoliths were used to determine the age of red whelks Neptunea antiqua, from the North Sea. Validation of the periodicity of the rings was established in four whelks by comparing the number of statolith rings with the number of seasonal Mg:Ca ratio cycles present in shell calcium carbonate samples drilled sequentially from along the growth axis. There was exact correspondence between the number of growth rings and the number of element ratio cycles in two of the shells and a 1-year difference in the estimated age between the two methods in the other two shells, evidence which is strongly indicative of an annual periodicity of deposition to the statolith rings. The estimated age of the whelks using the statolith rings varied between 4 years (shell length 102 mm) and 17 years (shell length 148 mm). The age of the whelks ascertained from the statoliths was compared with age estimates from the number of adventitious layers in sectioned opercula. The number of adventitious layers in whelks from 51 to 148 mm shell length ranged between 1 and 12 years. No significant difference was observed between the number of strongly defined statolith rings and number of opercula adventitious layers.  相似文献

Otoliths were removed from field-collected silversides of age less than 3 months. Otolith diameter was highly correlated with total length of the fish. Daily growth ring counts for this species are known to be a function of age rather than size, so widths for the daily growth rings provide a record of daily increases in length of the fish. Measurement of ring widths showed that weekly specific growth rate was greater than 70% at age 1 week, but declined to about 30% at age 1 month and about 15% at age 2 months. A laboratory experiment in which temperature was changed on a weekly basis demonstrated that environmental variables can affect the width of rings. Nevertheless, the growth rate of field-collected fish, as calculated from otolith ring widths, was more highly correlated with size of fish, as measured by otolith radius, than with the environmental variables of temperature, salinity and plankton abundance. Back-calculation of growth rates from otolith ring widths of five fish collected at the end of the growing season yielded the same age-growth curves as were obtained from 203 fish collected biweekly during the season.  相似文献

From measurements of the thickness of successive growth rings shell growth curves were constructed for seven ammonoid genera of different taxonomic position and geological age. All the curves have 'sinusoidal' aspect due to the alternation of maximum and minimum growth increments of the shell tunc. Growth curves made for two ammonoid shells belonging to the genera Proloxyclymenia (D3fm) and Euphylloceras (K1a) show regularly recurring minima and maxima at intervals of 14–16 growth rings. The fact that the minima and maxima of the growth curves recur exactly at intervals of 14–16 growth rings seems to reflect the relationship between the shell tube secretion and the formation of septa. This fact also seems to support the views about fortnightly or 28-day cycles in the construction of ammonoid hydrostatic chambers. By counting the total number of septa in the phragmocones, the duration of phragmocone secretion for 23 shells was estimated. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The mangrove Rhizophora mucronata has previously been reported to lack annual growth rings, thus barring it from dendrochronological studies. In this study the reported absence of the growth rings was reconsidered and the periodic nature of light and dark brown layers visible on polished stem discs investigated. In addition, the formation of these layers in relation to prevailing environmental conditions, as well as their potential for age determination of the trees, was studied. METHODS: Trees of known age were collected and a 2.5-year cambial marking experiment was conducted to determine the periodic nature of the visible growth layers. KEY RESULTS: Annual indistinct growth rings were detected in R. mucronata and are defined by a low vessel density earlywood and a high vessel density latewood. The formation of these growth rings and their periodic nature was independent from site-specific environmental conditions in two forests along the Kenyan coast. However, the periodic nature of the rings was seriously affected by slow growth rates, allowing accurate age determination only in trees with radial growth rates above 0.5 mm year(-1). The onset of the formation of the low vessel density wood coincided with the onset of the long rainy season (April-May) and continues until the end of the short rainy season (November). The high vessel density wood is formed during the dry season (December-March). Age determination of the largest trees collected in the two studied forests revealed the relatively young age of these trees (+/-100 years). CONCLUSIONS: This study reports, for the first time, the presence of annual growth rings in the mangrove R. mucronata, which offers further potential for dendrochronological and silvicultural applications.  相似文献

Age and growth of the sailfish Istiophorus platypterus were determined for the area off Mazatlan coast, Sinaloa, in the Gulf of California, between September 2002 and August 2003. The lower jaw-fork length and total weight of 572 specimens were measured, and the fourth dorsal spine was collected to determine age. The monthly variation of the sample size displayed a well-defined seasonal pattern, which peaked during the warm period (May?CNovember) and declined during the rest of the year (temperate period). Significant differences were detected in the size structure by sex during the temperate period, with females displaying larger sizes and greater abundance (Female:Male = 3.35:1). In the warm period the size structure was similar, with the sex ratio reaching F:M = 0.73:1. This suggests a different sex-related recruitment in the fishing zone, with males moving more actively than females. While female size remained relatively unchanged over the year, male size increased during the warm period. Age was estimated using the number of growth rings on the cross-sectioned fourth dorsal spine, after the number of absorbed growth rings in the vascularized zone had been estimated. Nine age groups were identified; group-5 was the most abundant, representing 31% of the catch. The trend of the monthly change in the percentage of opaque-edge spines and the average of the marginal increase rate indicated that the formation of growth rings displayed an annual pattern. The von Bertalanffy growth model was adequately fitted to age and back-calculated length data. Significant differences were detected when growth was compared between sexes; females grew faster than males.  相似文献

Stem discs from trees of known age were used to determine the periodic nature of the growth rings formed in Laguncularia racemosa and to describe the anatomical features of these rings. The growth rings were scarcely distinct on microscopic examination, but they were well distinguishable macroscopically, with alternating light brown and dark brown layers. Cross-dating analysis revealed the occurrence of annual growth rings in L. racemosa. The existence of annual growth rings in L. racemosa suggests that it may have great potential for dendrochronology and should encourage age-related studies on the dynamics of mangrove forests. These studies can be important for the evaluation of climate change impact on mangrove ecosystems, as well as for the analysis of effects related to climate variability on plant communities.  相似文献

Annual rings on the first dorsal spine were used to determine the age and growth of the catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacépède), in the Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria. From back-calculations, it was found that the mean total length ofthe species when the first annulus was formed was 18.5 cm, 32.6 cm for second annulus, 43.5 cm for the third annulus and 53.9 cm for the fourth annulus. It was shown that this species in the Lagos Lagoon attained four years of age and that the fastest growth in length was achieved during the first year of life. Thereafter, increase in length gradually decreased with age. The relationship between the body length and dorsal spine radius was shown to be linear and highly correlated.  相似文献

The scales of Tilapia mossambica Peters * from Lake Sibaya show clear rings formed by broken, widely-spaced circuli in the anterior field. In order to determine the rate and time of scale ring formation, the number of circuli in the marginal increment was determined. Five scales from the pectoral region of 2223 fishes caught at regular intervals over two years were examined. When plotted as histograms, the number of circuli in the marginal increment showed a sharp movement to the left in September–October and again in January, indicating that the rings were formed during these months in the majority of fish examined. Pre- and postbreeding feeding migrations, and increases in condition factor, were associated with scale ring formation. Otoliths and opercula were also examined for age determination. Annual length increments were calculated for 450 T. mossambica collected throughout the year, and growth curves plotted. T. mossambica from Sibaya reach maturity after one year at a standard length of about 8 cm in females, and after two years at 10 cm in males. The breeding population had a standard length mode of 11–12 cm in females and 17 cm in males. The maximum final size was about 24 cm.  相似文献

In spite of the exuberance of recent approaches to age determination of fish, many ecologists are convinced that the most valid method is age reading from permanent marks or growth rings laid on skeletal parts. Of the known structures used, only the vertebrae are suitable and readable for a large variety of species and sizes. Examination of different skeletal structures of Labeo horie, a Cyprinid collected from Jebel Aulia reservoir, revealed that the frontal bone carried well-defined growth rings. The validity of these rings was checked against other direct and indirect methods of age determination. Results proved to be statistically valid, and the frontal bone offers an additional device of age determination of L. horie.  相似文献

Stable oxygen isotope analyses of U-shaped spines removed at intervals along profiles of the outer shell surface of Pinna nobilis (L) were used to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) and validate the periodicity of adductor muscle scar rings on the inner shell surface. Elemental ratios (Mg:Ca and Sr:Ca) of spines, determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), were compared with the SST estimated from the stable oxygen isotopic composition of the shell deposited at the same time. The elemental ratios and the stable oxygen isotopic composition recorded in the shell were significantly correlated: Mg:Ca ratio=0.0002 (seawater temperature)+0.0095 (r2=0.445), Sr:Ca ratio=0.00005 (seawater temperature)+0.0014 (r2=0.887). The ratios in the spines were highest when the SST was warmest during July and August and were lowest between January and February when the SST was minimal.The positions of the first and second adductor muscle scar rings, unlike the later rings, are often difficult to discern, and in large shells they are obscured by nacre. Seasonal patterns in the elemental ratios were used to characterise the age in regions of the outer shell surface corresponding to the first two years of shell growth. A combination of both elemental ratios and muscle scar rings were used to estimate the age and hence the growth rate of P. nobilis from three locations in the Croatian Adriatic. Annual cycles of shell growth, inferred from the seasonal pattern in the element ratios, were used to determine the season of recruitment of fan mussels at several localities along the Croatian coastline. Pinnids generally settled during late autumn and winter although one shell from Mali Ston Bay settled during the summer. P. nobilis from Mali Ston Bay exhibited the fastest growth reaching a length of ∼60 cm and an age of 9 years, whereas those from Malo jezero grew the slowest attaining a length of ∼50 cm at 12 years of age.  相似文献

Evidence from other species of sea urchins indicated that the growth rings found in the skeletal plates of Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck) were probably formed annually, and could therefore be used as a means of determining age. In this species, annual formation of the rings has been proved by the similarity of growth curves derived from ring counts and size-frequency analyses; there is a good agreement between the annual increments predicted from these growth curves and those observed in experimental populations. Determinations of the cycles of ring deposition and reproduction gave results which were consistent with this interpretation.Similarities in the growth curves did not always extend to the mean values determined for each ring-class and the equivalent size-frequency groups, and the size-frequency distributions of single ring-classes were found to be much wider than those of the equivalent groups determined by sizefrequency analysis. This is attributed to a wide variation in the season of ring deposition in different individuals, and this limits the accuracy of ring count ageing to about ± one year.There were no significant differences between the reproductive cycles of male and female urchins; the gonad indices rose to peak values in late winter and late summer. Gonad condition was very variable within each population sample. The animals grew to a mean diameter of 35–50 mm in about four years, after which growth rates slowed down, and it is probable that most of the urchins died of senescence after 6–9 years.  相似文献

The yearly nature of increment formation in the otoliths of 1–9‐year‐old seabream, Diplodus vulgaris (E. Geoffrey Saint‐Hilaire 1817), from the Canary Islands was validated. The marginal increment method showed that the opaque rings were formed in summer, and the translucent rings in winter. The Brody Proportional Hypothesis and the power length–radius relationship used to back‐calculate the growth trajectories of D. vulgaris showed that this growth model could provide reasonable growth estimates in this species. Growth back‐calculation and growth estimates obtained by direct otolith readings were similar. Data on age and size used to estimate the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth model for D. vulagris from the Canary Islands showed that males and females had similar growth rates.  相似文献

本文以鹅喉羚为材料,采用双重附贴磨片法及蚀刻法确定角磨片上显示的生长层与角鞘上凸“嵴”的关系,并以第一下门齿(I_1)作切片所显示的年轮线进行验证。证明其角鞘上的凸“嵴”数量多少并不表示年龄大小,在一龄内无凸“嵴”,二、三龄均包含有4—5个凸“嵴”,四龄后亦为2—3个凸“嵴”组成一龄,真正的年龄线是角表凸“嵴”之后有一粗糙微凹的环纹。实验结果可应用于野外生态学调查,用以判断种群年龄及结构。  相似文献

The knowledge of tree age is important for understanding tree growth and forest dynamics. It may be estimated by ‘direct’ methods involving growth ring counts, or by ‘indirect’ methods involving field measurements of growth rates. Direct methods are considered more accurate, but it is not clear if they are appropriate for all species, notably from the humid tropics. In this paper we assess the occurrence of annual growth rings and their utility for age estimation in three tropical tree species, Acrocarpus fraxinifolius, Dalbergia latifolia (Fabaceae) and Syzygium cumini (Myrtaceae), growing in traditional shade coffee plantations of the southern Western Ghats, India. These species previously were described as having “indistinct or absent” growth rings. We used anatomical studies, field measurements and computational methods to characterise growth rings and assess similarities between directly and indirectly estimated tree ages. Our study revealed that annual growth rings were characterised by different sets of anatomical features per species and were most distinct in the fast-growing deciduous A. fraxinifolius. Growth rates measured in the field showed annual periodicity in all three species, and reflected annual rainfall-drought cycles in D. latifolia and S. cumini. Direct age estimates were most similar to indirect estimates in D. latifolia, and least so in S. cumini. The results of direct age estimation by counting rings are consistent with them being annual in nature in tropical species with distinct and reliable annual growth ring formation. However, for species with poorly defined growth rings, indirect age estimation methods might be more useful.  相似文献

Soils contaminated with hydrocarbons and others contaminants (heavy metals, PCBs, PAHs) were recently discovered in the banks of the Saint-François and Massawippi rivers. The aim of this study is to attempt to date the contamination events using dendrochronological and dendrochemical methods. For this study, dendrochronology is used to indicate the age of trees, identify the morphological growth anomalies, and provide the geochemical profile timeframe, with dendrochemistry used specifically to identify metal element concentrations in the growth rings of the selected specimens. Sampling for the two types of analysis was done on the banks of the Saint-François River in Windsor and Richmond, where the level of hydrocarbon contamination in the soil profiles is among the highest. Core samples were taken from three red ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) and dendrochemical analyses were done on the tree rings (191 samples). Dendrochemistry was successfully used to determine that there were heavy metals in the rings, and also to estimate the date of the contamination events by using tree-ring wood. Several contamination events were identified through the presence of lead and other metal trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) in the xylem of the trees analyzed at the selected sites. This suggests that various contaminants were transported by the river on several occasions and deposited on floodplains during successive floods. The atmospheric fallout must also be considered as the other source of pollutants recorded in the trees.  相似文献

Data on growth of the black scallop Chlamys varia (L.) were obtained by taggine, raft cage rearing, reading winter growth rings, and analysis of length-frequency distributions. Von Bertalanffy growth curves were fitted to each set of data by least-squares regression techniques involving no transformation of variates. The results obtained by the different methods are comparable except for those obtained by length-frequency distribution analysis. Length frequency distribution analysis seems to be complicated by the presence of a biannual recruitment. Counting growth rings seems to be a more accurate and easier method for growth estimates. The sizes at rings are different for individuals born in spring and for those born in autumn; the growth curves derived for these two types of animals remain different throughout their whole life. The relative proportions of individuals originating from each of the two recruitment groups have remained remarkably homogeneous for the last five years. Comparative study of the allometric relationships between length and width of the shell of the animals from the two recruitment groups showed no significant difference.  相似文献

The theoretical relations between the age distribution of cells in an exponential culture, variation of division intervals, synchronous growth, and elution of cells from a nitrocellulose membrane-bound culture were derived.The theory can be used (1) to derive an expectation for a membrane elution curve with which the observed curves may compared, (2) to determine the age distribution from a synchronous growth curve, (3) to determine the frequency distribution of division intervals from the age distribution or from the synchronous growth curve. 丽江云杉原始林是云南省香格里拉县小中甸地区的主要森林类型.本文采用树轮年代学的方法分析了丽江云杉年轮宽度对气候变化的响应;选取相对保守的结果负指数曲线或线性回归拟合生长趋势建立年表,进行了不同时间尺度的气候因素与差值年表(RES)序列的相关及响应函数分析,并利用特征年分析了产生宽窄年轮的原因.结果表明:研究区丽江云杉的径向生长与温度升高在1990-2008年存在一定的“分离现象”;上一生长季的水热状况是限制丽江云杉当年生长的主要气候因子,特别是上年7月的气温对当年径向生长具有负反馈作用,而上年7月的充足降水则促进当年的径向生长;上年生长季温度与降水变化的相反趋势是导致宽窄年轮形成的主要原因;丽江云杉的生长对帕尔默干旱指数(PDSI)的变化不敏感.  相似文献

The deposition rate of sagittal otolith rings in post-metamorphosed plaice, Pleuronectes platessa , was considered in relation to body growth under three feeding levels and two photoperiod regimes. Feeding levels and photoperiods significantly influenced the number of rings; more rings were deposited at higher levels of feeding and in longer photoperiod regimes. There was also a linear relationship between fish growth and the number of rings. The results suggest that sagittal rings could be used for aging wild juvenile plaice during the period of the growing season when growth rate is greater than 0.1 mm day1.  相似文献

The occurrence of seasonal growth rings in the wood of Campsiandra laurifolia, Acosmiun nitens, Pouteria orinocoensis and Psidium ovatifolium, common species growing in the flooding forest of the Mapire river, was analyzed using wood anatomy and ring- width analysis. The test of the annual ring formation was performed using radiocarbon analysis based on the nuclear weapon effect. All species showed growth rings visible to the naked eye. The ring boundaries in all cases were marked by bands of marginal parenchyma. The index ring-width curves of the four studied species showed a strong relationship with the fluctuation of the water river level during the non flooded months, suggesting that an increase in the water level during these months positively influenced the growth indicating that the rings were formed on an annual basis. The content of radiocarbon in the wood of anatomically predated rings of Campsiandra laurifolia and Pouteria orinocoensis confirm these results. All studied trees are slow growing with less than 2.5 mm annual increment.  相似文献
