Utilizing RNA blot hybridization and immunoblotting techniques, the changes of the hepatic contents of acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA and of the enzyme protein in growing chicks have been investigated. In the post-hatching period, the hepatic mRNA level markedly increased at least 70-fold when compared to that before hatching. This increase was not observed in chicks receiving no diet. These changes were closely paralleled with the rise of the hepatic content of acetyl-CoA carboxylase protein in chicks up to 10 days old. Neither the acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA level nor the enzyme quantity significantly changed in heart. It is concluded from these results that the developmental regulation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase in the post-hatching period of chicks is tissue specific and occurs primarily at a pretranslational step. The content of acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA in adult chicken liver was low, which is comparable to those in embryos at 3 days before hatching and chicks at hatching day. Although acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA was detected in adult chicken brain, heart, lung, kidney, uropygial gland, spleen, testis, and chest muscle as well as liver, the mRNA level in these tissues was much lower than that in liver of growing chicks.  相似文献

By electrophoretic and immunological assay the concentration of hepatic metallothionein in new born chick liver was found to be ontogenically modulated, reaching a peak accumulation per gram liver in fourth day of hatching and declining below the detection limit after second week postnatal. The protein was undetectable upto second week of incubation in egg-embryonic stage. The concentration of metallothionein mRNA shows drastic change during first few days after hatching. The greatest accumulation of metallothionein mRNA was detected in the one day new born chicks, which declined rapidly there after, and reduced to a barely detectable level. Metallothionein was also detected in the in vitro translated product of one day neonatal chick hepatic poly(A+) RNA by S-cysteine labelling and immunoprecipitation. The naturally occurring new-born chick liver metallothionein was found to be a zinc-metallothionein and the concentration of hepatic zinc in new-born chick was found to undergo drastic modulation during development, unlike some other chick tissues. Endogenous zinc ion mobilization can thus play a significant role in the developmental regulation of chick metallothionein expression.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to determine the levels of serotonin (5-HT), its major catabolic metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and norepinephrine (NE) in chick spinal cord before, during, and after hatching and also to determine if changes in the levels of these chemicals are directly related to the hatching behavior. The levels of 5-HT, 5-HIAA, and NE were measured by high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection in whole spinal cords of 20-day-old "pre-hatching" embryos, 21-day-old "normal hatching" embryos, 0-day-old "post-hatching" chicks, and 0-day-old "glass egg hatching" chicks. NE was measured but no significant differences were found in NE levels among experimental groups. The concentration of 5-HT was elevated in chick embryo spinal cords during normal hatching compared to pre-hatching embryos and post-hatching chicks. The concentration of 5-HIAA was elevated during and after normal hatching compared to pre-hatching embryos. However, neither 5-HT nor 5-HIAA levels were found to be elevated in chick spinal cords during glass egg hatching compared to pre-hatching embryos or post-hatching chicks. Therefore, there appears to be an activation of the serotonergic system in chick spinal cord related to the specific event of hatching but this activation is not directly related to the movements common to both hatching and glass egg hatching.  相似文献

In birds, competitive abilities of siblings in relation to their sex and the magnitude of hatching delay are still poorly understood. We compared the sex-specific growth of the last-hatched, competitively disadvantaged chicks with that of synchronously hatched chicks in two successive years. Sons exhibited higher growth rates than daughters in a year with delayed onset of breeding, and this sex-related difference was more pronounced among the asynchronously hatched chicks. Females apparently do not selectively allocate more resources to the last-laid eggs because neonatal body mass and the growth rate of asynchronously hatched chicks did not differ between years, despite the fact that in one of the years, asynchronous chicks hatched from replaced eggs taken randomly from other nests and not from eggs laid last by the incubating female. Among chicks that survived, moderately asynchronous siblings grew at a lower rate than synchronous ones, whereas no difference in mass gain was revealed between synchronous and strongly asynchronous siblings irrespective of their contrasting competitive abilities. We suggest that selection of the fittest asynchronous chicks may improve the overall quality of asynchronous broods, thus favouring the maintenance of asynchronous hatching strategies in variable environments.  相似文献

The probability of starvation of chicks increases through hatching order in broods of the coot, Fulica atra. After hatching chicks accompany, and are fed by, parents as they swim around the territory. The time that chicks are able to spend outside the nest increases rapidly with age, so that the earlier hatching chicks gain a feeding advantage over the later. Starvation of chicks occurs within 4–5 days of hatching. Even after this initial mortality there persist large differences in the parental feeding rates of individual chicks within a brood. These do not correlate with age and do not seem to be the result of sibling competition. Instead, the parents regulate which chicks accompany them on foraging trips and therefore actively maintain feeding differences within the brood. Chicks cannot counter this parental regulation and the least fed of the brood grow more slowly in spite of an increased self-feeding effort. The possible functions of this parental behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

The quality of day old chicks is crucial for profitable broiler production, but a difficult trait to define. In research, both qualitative and quantitative measures are used with variable predictive value for subsequent performance. In hatchery practice, chick quality is judged on a binomial scale, as chicks are divided into first grade (Q1-saleable) and second grade (Q2) chicks right after hatch. Incidences and reasons for classifying chicks as Q2, and potential of these chicks for survival and post-hatch performance have hardly been investigated, but may provide information for flock performance. We conducted an experiment to investigate (1) the quality of a broiler flock and the relation with post-hatch flock performance based on a qualitative score (Pasgar©score) of Q1 chicks and based on the incidence of Q2 chicks and (2) the reasons for classifying chicks as Q2, and the potential of these chicks for survival and post-hatch growth. The performance was followed of Q1 and Q2 chicks obtained from two breeder flocks that hatched in two different hatching systems (a traditional hatcher or a combined hatching and brooding system, named Patio). Eggs were incubated until embryo day 18, when they were transferred to one of the two hatching systems. At embryo day 21/post-hatch day 0, all chicks from the hatcher (including Q2 chicks) were brought to Patio, where the hatchery manager marked the Q2 chicks from both flocks and hatching systems and registered apparent reasons for classifying these chicks as Q2. Chick quality was assessed of 100 Q1 chicks from each flock and hatching system. Weights of all chicks were determined at days 0, 7, 21 and 42. There were no correlations between mean Pasgar©score and post-hatch growth or mortality, and suboptimal navel quality was the only quality trait associated with lower post-hatch growth. Growth was clearly affected by breeder flock and hatching system, which could not be linked to mean Pasgar©score or incidence of Q2 chicks. Q2 chicks showed lower post-hatch growth compared to Q1 chicks but effects on flock performance at slaughter weight were limited because early mortality in Q2 chicks was high (62.50% at 7 days). We concluded that chick qualitative scores and the incidence of Q2 chicks may be informative for the quality of incubation, but are not predictive for post-hatch flock performance. Culling Q2 chicks after hatch is well-founded in terms of both animal welfare and profitability.  相似文献

Gifujidori hens were allowed to repeat a breeding cycle in one season. In the first breeding cycle the duration of the brooding (raising chicks) stage was limited to 3 weeks, whereas in the second breeding cycle it was limited to 1 week by removing all chicks from mother hens. In the first breeding cycle, plasma prolactin (PRL) was high during the incubation period, but rapidly decreased on the day of hatching and reached minimum values about 1 week after hatching. In contrast, plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were low during the incubation period, but after hatching they gradually increased and reached peak values immediately after removal of chicks. Concentrations of oestradiol in plasma were low in the incubation and brooding stages but increased significantly immediately after removal of chicks. In the second breeding cycle, changes in PRL and LH concentrations were similar to those observed in the first breeding cycle except that even greater increases in plasma LH and oestradiol concentrations were observed one week after hatching when the chicks were removed. These results suggest that coexistence of newly hatched chicks may suppress LH secretion from the pituitary of the hen in the natural breeding cycle.  相似文献

1. Developmental changes in retinol and retinyl palmitate contents in lungs of chick embryos and posthatch chicks were investigated. 2. Remarkable changes in the lung retinol levels were found during development of chicks. Embryonic lungs 5 days prior to hatching contained the highest content of retinol. The level then declined rapidly and was lowest on 1 day before hatching. 3. Its level then rose substantially within 7 days after hatching. 4. No retinyl palmitate in chick lungs was detectable at any of the developmental stages examined, nor even in adult hen. 5. Serum retinol level changed in parallel with the lung retinol. 6. The patterns of changes in liver retinol and retinyl palmitate were remarkably different from that occurring in the lung retinol. In chick embryonic livers, the levels of them were low, followed by a rapid increase after hatching. 7. The high level and its rapid decrease of lung retinol content during development of chick embryos may be functionally connected with retinol action in embryonic lungs for cellular differentiation and maturation.  相似文献

In birds, asynchronous hatching typically leads to lower growth and survival of last-hatched chicks. However, all crimson rosella Platycercus elegans, chicks grow at the same rate, although first-hatched chicks can be as much as seven times heavier than last-hatched chicks at the end of hatching. We examined the delivery and distribution of food to 18 rosella broods by videotaping feeds and simultaneously recording mass changes in the nestbox using a digital balance. Parents visited the nest infrequently and delivered loads of up to 25% of their body weight during a feeding visit. Male rosellas consistently delivered larger loads and consequently had higher feeding rates (g/h) than females. Parents distributed food between chicks by direct regurgitation in a series of up to 51 food transfers. Overall, chicks of all hatching ranks received equal numbers of transfers, but parents differed in how they distributed food within the brood. Males fed first-hatched chicks more than last-hatched chicks, whereas females distributed food equally to all chicks. Selective feeding of small chicks might be costly to females since they delivered food more slowly than males and spent more time in the nestbox. Thus female rosellas may invest more in current reproduction than males. Parents also distributed food differently to male and female chicks. Large males were fed more than all other nestlings, while female nestlings were fed equally irrespective of size. This study confirms that complex patterns of parental allocation occur in wild populations. Copyright 1999 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

Postnatal effects of incubation length in mallard and pheasant chicks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Eggs of mallard ducks ( Anas platyrhynchos ) and ring-necked pheasants ( Phasianus colchicus ) were incubated in clutches arranged to stimulate embryos to hatch earlier or later than normal. This manipulation of hatching time was achieved by combining eggs of different age in the same clutch. To ensure hatching synchrony, embryos communicate with each other during the last stage of incubation, resulting in either a delay or an acceleration of hatching. Embryos of both species that accelerated their hatching time suffered a higher mortality rate after hatching. Combining mortality with the proportion of hatchlings that suffered from leg deformities, impeding their movements, resulted in a cost also to pheasant chicks delaying their hatching. Chicks of both species accelerating hatching time had a lower minimum mass and a shorter tarsus length than control chicks, whereas chicks delaying hatching time either grew as well or slightly better than control chicks. Mallard chicks had better balance and mobility immediately after hatching the longer they stayed in the egg. This indicates that the period immediately before hatching, is an important period for muscular and organ maturity. Reducing this period results in costs affecting post-hatching survival. The strategy to assure synchronous hatching in mallards and pheasants probably reflect a trade-off between the negative effects of shifting the age at hatching away from normal and differences in predation risk during different stages of reproduction.  相似文献

The ontogeny of hepatic tissue growth and trace metal deposition was examined in the developing turkey embryo and newly hatched poult. Hepatic concentrations of zinc and iron in the embryo declined by about twofold between day 16 of incubation and hatching. Hepatic copper concentration increased approximately fourfold by day 23 of incubation and then declined rapidly through hatching. During the post-hatching period, hepatic zinc concentration increased twofold by day 10, whereas a small increase in hepatic iron concentration occurred just prior to hatching and continued through the third day post-hatching. A significant positive correlation existed between hepatic zinc and iron concentrations in the developing embryo. The concentrations of both these metals were inversely correlated with hepatic copper concentration during the same time. Total hepatic zinc and iron content increased throughout the entire time studied, whereas total copper content increased up to hatching and then declined during the first week post-hatching. The most rapid phase of hepatic metal accretion differed for each metal, with zinc being rapidly accumulated during the post-hatching period, copper during the last half of incubation and iron at about the time of hatching and the first few days post-hatching. Each of these metals demonstrated a specific relationship to hepatic tissue growth that changed between the embryonic and neonatal periods of development.  相似文献

Long-term experimental feeding of 20,000 ppm alpha-tocopheryl acetate to laying hens caused a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in hatching rates as compared to the control group, which was fed a diet containing 19 ppm alpha-tocopherol. When the thyroid hormones in the developing chicks were checked on incubation days 16, 19, 21, and 22, the following results were ascertained: During the latter part of incubation, increases in plasma concentrations of thyroxine and triiodothyronine were observed. No significant differences in hormone concentrations (P > 0.05) between the control and the treatment group were observed during incubation days 16, 19, and 22. However, on the day of hatching (day 21 of incubation) significantly lower (P < 0.05) triiodothyronine concentrations in chick embryos of piped eggs were found in the treatment group. Moreover, thyroxine concentrations in non-piped eggs and in hatched chicks were found to be significantly higher as compared to the control group. Given these results, one concludes that extremely high dosages of vitamin E may affect thyroid hormone concentrations of hatching chicks, and therefore, the chicks might be inhibited in pipping the egg shell. Hypothetically, the hepatic enzyme 5'-monodeiodinase is involved in the mechanism of inhibition.  相似文献

The ability of parents to respond to changes in food supply within a season will have a large effect on fitness through the number and quality of chicks fledged. Great tits, Parus major, attempt to synchronise their production of chicks with a seasonal food peak, but when food supply fails, hatching asynchrony of chicks provides a mechanism by which some young can be fledged because more developed chicks outcompete their less developed siblings for the reduced parental food supply. We tested whether female great tits can potentially control the degree of hatching asynchrony by using incubation before clutch completion, so that early laid eggs develop faster and hatch sooner. The temperature of an artificial egg placed in 29 nests during the laying period was measured with data loggers, and nocturnal incubation of eggs similar to incubation post clutch completion was recorded in all nests. We then demonstrated that eggs removed from the nest for 72 hour periods prior to clutch completion hatched later than eggs remaining in the nest for the entirety of the laying period. Our results show that variable pre clutch completion incubation (which was mostly nocturnal) can lead to faster embryo development and earlier hatching, so potentially providing a mechanism for adaptive female control of degree of hatching asynchrony.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the carbohydrate-rich diet of chicks after hatching is responsible for the emergence of hepatic enzymes involved in lipogenesis; the injection of glucose to newly hatched chicks gives rise to an appreciable elvation on the activities of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase and fatty acid synthetase. The present study shows that during the first hours after hatching, there is a natural elevation of glycemia which parallels the increase in acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase activity. However, the administration of hormones which alter the blood glucose levels considerably (insulin, tolbutamide, glucagon and hydrocortisone) did not influence the enzyme activity. The administration of thyroxine, estradiol and cyclic AMP, was also without effect. These results do not support the theory that the increased amount of blood glucose is the natural effector of the induction acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase. They also show that different lipogenic enzymes are not regulated via the same 'operon' since thyroxine or glucagon which alter the level of some enzymes on this pathway did not modify that of the acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase.  相似文献

Reproductive success declines over the course of the breeding season in many bird species. Two categories of hypothesis have been evoked to explain this decline. The “timing” hypothesis suggests that seasonal declines in breeding success are attributable to the date of laying. The “parental quality” hypothesis suggests that seasonal declines result from the fact that young, inexperienced, or low quality birds breed later in the season. To evaluate the relative importance of timing and parental quality, egg exchanges and removals were used to manipulate hatching dates of common terns Sterna hirundo. Indices of quality, attendance, provisioning rates, and reproductive success of birds in three experimental groups (delayed hatch pairs, advanced hatch pairs, and pairs induced to relay) were compared to those of date‐matched controls. Pairs that hatched chicks early raised more chicks than pairs hatching chicks late in the season, regardless of initial laying date. This suggests that hatching chicks early is advantageous in itself. Our results, however, also support the parental quality hypothesis. There was a significant negative relationship between natural laying date and fledging success, independent of hatching date. Differences in chick growth and survival suggest that higher quality adults may be able to compensate for the disadvantages of late hatching dates and achieve similar reproductive success to that of pairs hatching chicks early. We found that pairs hatching chicks late in the season were subject to more incidents of kleptoparasitism than those hatching chicks early. This may be a proximate factor contributing to seasonal declines in reproductive success for common terns, although such a mechanism would not be likely in non‐colonial species. Failure to control for egg quality may have biased the results of some prior egg exchange experiments. Additionally, altered cost of incubation may be an unavoidable confounding factor in studies designed to manipulate timing of breeding.  相似文献

Immunochemical techniques were used to study the mechanism underlying the marked increase in the level of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase activity in chick liver observed after hatching. The results of immunochemical titrations and Ouchterlony double-diffusion analysis indicated that this increase in the activity level of the enzyme was due to an elevation in the enzyme quantity. Isotopic leucine incorporation studies revealed that the rate of synthesis of the enzyme per liver was 18-fold higher in 9-day-old chicks than in 1-day-old chicks. In terms of the synthesis rate per gram of liver, this increase was 5-fold. The half-life for degradation of the enzyme in 9-day-old chicks was shown to be 46 h, whereas no apparent degradation of the enzyme as well as of total soluble liver protein was observed in 1-day-old chicks. These results indicate that the increase in the hepatic acetyl-CoA carboxylase content in growing chicks can be ascribed to accelerated synthesis of the enzyme.  相似文献

From ~35 days of age fast growing meat chickens spend extended periods sitting or lying and less time standing. In a fast-feathering parent line lower early incubation temperatures which delayed chick hatch time, improved bone ash and extended their standing time. This incubation study assessed the consequences of incubation temperatures, hatch time and chick management at hatch/take off on femoral bone ash (BA) in Cobb 500 meat chickens. Embryos were incubated under either Control (between 37.8°C and 38.2°C egg shell temperature (EST)) or a Slow start (from 37.2°C at sett (the start of incubation), reaching 37.8°C EST at day 13 incubation), temperatures. Hatched chicks were identified at 492 h (20.5 days of incubation – classified as early (E)) or, between >492 and ⩽516 h (>20.5 and ⩽21.5 days of incubation – classified as late (L)), from setting. The E hatch chicks were allocated across three post-hatch treatments; treatment 1: E hatch chicks that were sampled E at 492 h from setting; treatment 2: E hatch chicks that were fed for a further 24 h in a floorpen before being sampled L at 516 h from setting; treatment 3: E hatch chicks that spent a further 24 h in the incubator before being sampled L at 516 h from setting. All L hatch chicks formed one treatment group which was sampled L at 516 h (i.e. L hatch chicks sampled L). It is not possible to sample L hatching chicks E hence this treatment is absent from the experimental design. Slow start incubation resulted in a higher total hatch percentage with a greater proportion of chicks hatching L, compared with the Control incubation. The L hatching chicks had significantly higher BA than the E hatching chicks. Of the E hatching chicks, those sampled both E and L had significantly lower BA than E hatching chicks fed for 24 h before L sampling. The E hatch, fed and sampled L chicks had the numerically highest BA, which was not significantly different from the BA of the L hatching chicks sampled L These results demonstrate that BA at hatch can be improved, either by extending the incubation period through a Slow start incubation profile, inducing L hatch, or alternatively, via the prompt provision of feed to E hatching chicks.  相似文献

Although it is well documented that hatching asynchrony in birds can lead to competitive and developmental hierarchies, potentially greatly affecting growth and survival of nestlings, hatching asynchrony may also precipitate modulations in neuroendocrine development or function. Here we examine sibling variation in adrenocortical function in postnatally developing, asynchronously hatching American kestrels (Falco sparverius) by measurements of baseline and stress-induced levels of corticosterone at ages 10, 16, 22, and 28 days posthatching. There was a significant effect of hatching order on both baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels during development and these effects grew stronger through development. First-hatched chicks exhibited higher baseline levels than later-hatched chicks throughout development and higher stress-induced levels during the latter half of development. Furthermore, there was significant hatching span (difference in days between first- and last-hatched chicks) x hatching order interaction on both baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels during development. Hatching span was also positively correlated with both measures of corticosterone and body mass in first-hatched chicks, but was negatively correlated with these factors through most of the development in last-hatched chicks. It is known that hatching asynchrony creates mass and size hierarchies within kestrel broods and we suggest that hierarchies in adrenocortical function among siblings may be one physiological mechanism by which these competitive hierarchies are maintained.  相似文献

Brood sex ratio in the Kentish plover   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
How and why do the mating opportunities of males and femalesdiffer in natural population of animals? Previously we showedthat females have higher mating opportunities than males inthe Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus. Both parents incubatethe eggs, and males provide more brood care than females; thusit is not obvious why the females find new mates sooner thanthe males. In this study we investigated whether the sex-biasedmating opportunities stem from biased offspring sex ratios. We determined the sex of newly hatched, precocial chicks usingCHD gene markers. Among fully sexed broods, 0.461 ± 0.024(SE) of chicks (454 chicks in 158 broods) were male, and thissex ratio was not significantly different from unity. The proportionof males at hatching decreased significantly over the breedingseason, which occurred consistently in all 3 years of the study.Large chicks were more likely to be males than females. Neitherparental age nor body size of male and female parents was relatedto brood sex ratio. We also sexed a number of chicks that werecaught after they left their nest (range of estimated ages 0–17days) and found that the proportion of males increased withbrood age. This relationship remained highly significant whencontrolling statistically for hatching date. As brood size decreaseddue to mortality after the chicks left their nest, these resultssuggest that the mortality of daughters was higher than thatof the sons shortly after hatching. Taken together, our resultsshow that the female-biased mating opportunities in the Kentishplover are not due to biased brood sex ratio at hatching but,at least in part, are due to female-biased chick mortality soonafter hatching.  相似文献

We studied the carbohydrate recognition systems of hepatocytes isolated from 16-day-old embryos, 19-day-old embryos and chicks within 24 h of hatching. We localized and quantified at the ultrastructural level the binding sites for glycoproteins exposing terminal N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), mannose and N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) residues by means of protein-gold complexes. Binding sites specific for GlcNAc and mannose residues are present on hepatocytes from embryos and chicks. On the contrary GalNAc specific binding sites are exclusively observed on cells from 16-day-old embryos. The number and distribution of gold particles on hepatocyte cell surfaces depend on the binding sites and the age considered. We describe a modulation in the number of GlcNAc, and mannose specific receptors present on the cell surface between the embryonal stage and neonatal life.  相似文献
