Theory on the evolution of niche width argues that resource heterogeneity selects for niche breadth. For parasites, this theory predicts that parasite populations will evolve, or maintain, broader host ranges when selected in genetically diverse host populations relative to homogeneous host populations. To test this prediction, we selected the bacterial parasite Serratia marcescens to kill Caenorhabditis elegans in populations that were genetically heterogeneous (50% mix of two experimental genotypes) or homogeneous (100% of either genotype). After 20 rounds of selection, we compared the host range of selected parasites by measuring parasite fitness (i.e. virulence, the selected fitness trait) on the two focal host genotypes and on a novel host genotype. As predicted, heterogeneous host populations selected for parasites with a broader host range: these parasite populations gained or maintained virulence on all host genotypes. This result contrasted with selection in homogeneous populations of one host genotype. Here, host range contracted, with parasite populations gaining virulence on the focal host genotype and losing virulence on the novel host genotype. This pattern was not, however, repeated with selection in homogeneous populations of the second host genotype: these parasite populations did not gain virulence on the focal host genotype, nor did they lose virulence on the novel host genotype. Our results indicate that host heterogeneity can maintain broader host ranges in parasite populations. Individual host genotypes, however, vary in the degree to which they select for specialization in parasite populations.  相似文献

AIMS: The aims of the study were to identify the effects of rice endophyte Pantoea agglomerans YS19 on host plant growth and allocations of photosynthates. METHODS AND RESULTS: Endophytic diazotrophic YS19 showed nitrogen-fixing activity in N-free medium, and produced four categories of phytohormones which were indole-3-acetic acid, abscisic acid, gibberellic acid and cytokinin in Luria-Bertani medium. Inoculation of YS19 improved the biomass of the 12-day-cultivated host rice seedlings by 63.4% on N-free medium or by 18.7% on N-supplemented medium. Spraying of YS19 cell culture onto the rice plants at the premilk stage enhanced the transportation of the photosynthetic assimilation product from the source (flag leaves) to the sink (stachys) significantly. The formation of the plant sink was obviously inhibited when YS19 cell culture was applied at the late milk stage. CONCLUSIONS: This research suggests that endophyte YS19 promotes host rice plant growth and affects allocations of host photosynthates. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These findings suggested that YS19 possesses the potential for increasing rice production in field application. Meanwhile, a suitable plant growth stage must be selected for the foliar spraying of YS19 cell culture.  相似文献

Trissolcus semistriatus(Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) has a high potentialfor being an effective biological control agentfor the sunn pest, Eurygaster integriceps. This study was conducted to determine thepreferences of T. semistriatus in termsof host species and age of variousheteropteran host eggs (E. integriceps,Dolycoris baccarum, Graphosoma lineatum,Eurydema ornatum, Holcostethus vernalis). Theresults indicated that a small portion ofparasitism of E. ornatum eggs wasobtained (28.5%), although high parasitismrates were found in other host eggs(90.0–80.0%). A high percentage of adultemergence was also recorded. When tested for its ability toparasitize host eggs of different ages,T. semistriatus was found to preferyounger hosts: it showed parasitism ratesgreater than 50% with up to 3 daysold E. integriceps and D.baccarum, and with up to 4 days old G. lineatum and H. vernalis. However, theparasitism rates in all the ages of E. ornatum eggs were much lower than for other hostspecies. The developmental times in all hostspecies at different ages was extended withincreased host age. It was concluded that G. lineatum and D. baccarum could beused for mass production of egg parasitoids.  相似文献

Lauric acid (C12:0) and sapienic acid (C16:1Δ6) derived from human sebaceous triglycerides are potent antimicrobials found at the human skin surface. Long-chain bases (sphingosine, dihydrosphingosine and 6-hydroxysphingosine) are also potent and broad-acting antimicrobials normally present at the skin surface. These antimicrobials are generated through the action of ceramidases on ceramides from the stratum corneum. These natural antimicrobials are thought to be part of the innate immune system of the skin. Exogenously providing these lipids to the skin may provide a new therapeutic option, or could potentially provide prophylaxis in people at risk of infection. Aims: The host specificity (H‐SPF) and host sensitivity (H‐SNV) values of the sewage‐associated HF183 Bacteroides marker in the current study were compared with the previously published studies in South East Queensland (SEQ), Australia, by testing a large number of wastewater and faecal DNA samples (n = 293) from 11 target and nontarget host groups. This was carried out to obtain information on the consistency in the H‐SPF and H‐SNV values of the HF183 marker for sewage pollution tracking in SEQ. Methods and Results: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis was used to determine the presence/absence of the HF183 marker in wastewater and faecal DNA samples. Among the human composite wastewater (n = 59) from sewage treatment plants and individual human (n = 20) faecal DNA samples tested, 75 (95%) were PCR positive for the HF183 marker. The overall H‐SNV of this marker in target host group was 0·95 (maximum of 1·00). Among the 214 nontarget animal faecal DNA samples tested, 201 (94%) samples were negative for the HF183 marker. Six chicken, five dog and two bird faecal DNA samples, however, were positive for the marker. The overall H‐SPF of the HF183 marker to differentiate between target and nontarget faecal DNA samples was 0·94 (maximum of 1·00). Conclusions: The H‐SNV (0·95) and H‐SPF (0·94) values obtained in this study was slightly lower than previous studies (H‐SNV value of 1·00 in 2007 and 1·00 in 2009; H‐SPF value of 1·00 in 2007 and 0·99 in 2009). Nonetheless, the overall high H‐SNV (0·98) and H‐SPF (0·97) values of the HF183 marker over the past 4 years (i.e. 2007–2011) suggest that the HF183 marker can be reliably used for the detection of sewage pollution in environmental waters in SEQ. Significance and Impact of the Study: In the current study, the HF183 marker was detected in small number nontarget animal faecal samples. Care should be taken to interpret results obtained from catchments or waterways that might be potentially contaminated with dog faecal matter or poultry litter.  相似文献

Weed biocontrol relies on host specificity testing, usually carried out under quarantine conditions to predict the future host range of candidate control agents. The predictive power of host testing can be scrutinised directly with Aconophora compressa, previously released against the weed Lantana camara L. (lantana) because its ecology in its new range (Australia) is known and includes the unanticipated use of several host species. Glasshouse based predictions of field host use from experiments designed a posteriori can therefore be compared against known field host use. Adult survival, reproductive output and egg maturation were quantified. Adult survival did not differ statistically across the four verbenaceous hosts used in Australia. Oviposition was significantly highest on fiddlewood (Citharexylum spinosum L.), followed by lantana, on which oviposition was significantly higher than on two varieties of Duranta erecta (“geisha girl” and “Sheena’s gold”; all Verbenaceae). Oviposition rates across Duranta varieties were not significantly different from each other but were significantly higher than on the two non-verbenaceous hosts (Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don: Bignoneaceae (jacaranda) and Myoporum acuminatum R. Br.: Myoporaceae (Myoporum)). Production of adult A. compressa was modelled across the hosts tested. The only major discrepancy between model output and their relative abundance across hosts in the field was that densities on lantana in the field were much lower than predicted by the model. The adults may, therefore, not locate lantana under field conditions and/or adults may find lantana but leave after laying relatively few eggs. Fiddlewood is the only primary host plant of A. compressa in Australia, whereas lantana and the others are used secondarily or incidentally. The distinction between primary, secondary and incidental hosts of a herbivore species helps to predict the intensity and regularity of host use by that herbivore. Populations of the primary host plants of a released biological control agent are most likely to be consistently impacted by the herbivore, whereas secondary and incidental host plant species are unlikely to be impacted consistently. As a consequence, potential biocontrol agents should be released only against hosts to which they have been shown to be primarily adapted.  相似文献

A) RhoA regulation of pyrin. B) Inactivation of RhoA and control of pyrin inflammasome activation by bacterial effectors and toxins.A) In steady-state conditions, RhoA is constantly being turned on and off by GEFs and GAPs that exchange GDP for GTP or accelerate conversion of GTP to GDP, respectively. RhoA regulates the pyrin inflammasome through interactions with transducers of RhoA signaling, PRKs, that phosphorylate pyrin creating a 14-3-3 binding site. Phosphorylated and 14-3-3 bound pyrin is locked in an off state where its conformation prevents interaction with inflammasome components. B) (1) Bacteria deliver toxins or effecter proteins to host cells using T3SS, T6SS, secretion via ECVs or other general secretion mechanisms. There are several classes of RhoA modifying toxins including, those that covalently modify RhoA, those that proteolytically cleave RhoA and GAPs. (2) Toxins and effectors inactivate RhoA stopping PRK signaling to pyrin. (3) The lack of negative signal by PRKs and possible action of a phosphatase leads to the dephosphorylation of pyrin on its regulatory serine residues and loss of 14-3-3 binding. (4) Another class of toxins and effectors are those that inhibit pyrin inflammasome formation. YopM, an inhibitor of pyrin inflammasome formation represented in blue, recruits kinases RSK and PRK to pyrin to keep it phosphorylated. (5) When pyrin is dephosphorylated it then binds to the ASC adapter protein which binds and dimerizes pro-caspase-1 forming the inflammasome complex. Additionally, evidence suggests that microtubule polymerization is required for inflammasome formation. Upon dimerization, pro-caspase-1 undergoes autoproteolytic cleavage fully activating the enzyme. Mature caspase-1 then cleaves pro-IL-1β, pro-IL-18 and GSDMD to their mature forms. (6) Gasdermin-D then oligomerizes and forms pores in the plasma membrane which allows secretion of IL-1β and IL-18. If enough pores in the plasma membrane form the cell will undergo cell death via lysis known as pyroptosis.Abbreviations: GDP: guanosine diphosphate; GTP: guanosine triphosphate; PRK: protein kinase C-related kinase; T3SS: type 3 secretion system; T6SS: type 6 secretion system; ECVs: extracellular vesicles; GAP: GTPase activating proteins; ASC: apoptosis-associated speck-like protein; IL: interleukin; GSDMD: gasdermin-D; PSP: protein serine/threonine phosphatase.

The successful development of parasitoids of herbivores depends on the quality of their host, which is often affected by the host plant. Therefore, a parasitoid’s oviposition decisions will directly depend on the host, but also on plant quality. Here, we investigated the direct effects of host species and the indirect effects of the host’s food plant on the oviposition decisions and performance of the gregarious ectoparasitoid Euplectrus platyhypenae Howard (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). With a series of no‐choice experiments, we determined the oviposition and performance of the parasitoid on: (1) two caterpillar species, fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and velvet armyworm, Spodoptera latifascia Walker, reared on maize (Zea mays L., Poaceae), (2) the same caterpillars reared on maize, bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Fabaceae), or squash (Cucurbita pepo L., Cucurbitaceae) leaves, and (3) S. latifascia caterpillars reared on leaves of wild and cultivated lima bean, Phaseolus lunatus L. All these insects and plants originate from Mesoamerica where they have coexisted for thousands of years in the traditional agricultural system known as Milpa in which maize, beans, and squash are planted together. We found that the preferred and best combination of host and host plant for parasitoid performance was S. frugiperda on maize. Parasitoids laid larger clutches, had higher survival, and more females and larger adults emerged from S. frugiperda reared on maize. However, when both caterpillar species were reared on squash, S. latifascia was the better host. Contrary to the literature, S. frugiperda was not able to develop on bean plants. Results from the lima bean experiment showed that parasitoid performance was best when S. latifascia was reared on leaves of cultivated compared to wild lima bean. These findings are discussed in the context of mixed cropping in which the ability of generalist parasitoids to switch among hosts and host plant species could be advantageous for pest management.  相似文献

Ecological stoichiometry uses the mass balance of elements to predict energy and elemental fluxes across different levels of ecological organization. A specific prediction of ecological stoichiometry is the growth rate hypothesis (GRH), which states that organisms with faster growth or reproductive rates will require higher phosphorus content for nucleic acid and protein synthesis. Although parasites are found ubiquitously throughout ecosystems, little is understood about how they affect nutrient imbalances in ecosystems. We (1) tested the GRH by determining the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content of parasitic trematodes and their intermediate host, the freshwater snail Elimia livescens, and (2) used this framework to determine the trematode effects on host nutrient excretion and metabolism. Snail and parasite tissues were analyzed for elemental content using a CHN analyzer and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) methods. Ammonium and SRP assays were used to estimate N and P excretion rates. A respirometer was used to calculate individual snail metabolism. Trematode tissues contained lower C:P and N:P (more P per unit C and N) than the snail tissues. Snail gonadal tissues more closely resembled the elemental content of parasite tissues, although P content was 13% higher in the gonad than the trematode tissues. Despite differences in elemental content, N and P excretion rates of snails were not affected by the presence of parasites. Parasitized snails maintained faster metabolic rates than nonparasitized snails. However, the species of parasite did not affect metabolic rate. Together, this elemental imbalance between parasite and host, and the altered metabolic rate of infected snails may lead to broader parasite effects in stream ecosystems.  相似文献

We found evidence for patch marking in the parasitic wasp Halticoptera laevigata (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) foraging for concealed hosts. Wasps attack larvae of the fruit fly Myoleja lucida (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruits of honeysuckle. A special feature of this host-parasitoid system is the limited food supply of a patch (i.e. a fruit of honeysuckle), which allows the successful development of only a single host fly larva. Females of the parasitoid H. laevigata were found to mark the host patch with a pheromone and to abandon the patch following oviposition into a single host larva. Field data revealed that eggs of the parasitoid were spread out evenly among infested patches, with several larvae of the host fly left unparasitized in those patches that contained more than one host. Since many parasitic insects mark the parasitized host after oviposition, we assumed host marking to be the ancestral character state and studied the patch-marking behaviour of H. laevigata as a derived character state as an alternative foraging strategy. We used stochastic dynamic modelling to investigate under what conditions mutant (patch) markers would be able to invade a population of normal (larval) markers. The models suggested that, under a variety of conditions, wasps marking the patch obtained higher fitness than wasps only marking the larva. Consequently, the results from our model predict the evolution of the patch-marking behaviour found in the empirical investigation. Finally, we discuss alternative pathways to the evolution of patch marking and point out under what circumstances the evolution of a patch-marking behaviour can generally be expected.  相似文献

Electronantennograms (EAG) were recorded from the apple and hawthorn host race of the apple maggot fly, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), and from the blueberry maggot fly, R. mendax (Curran) (Diptera: Tephritidae), in response to host fruit extracts and nine volatile host fruit odor compounds at six concentrations. Mean relative EAG response to apple odor is the same in both species, but in respect to blueberry odor, it is significantly stronger in R. mendax than in both host races of R. pomonella (P<0.05), indicating that antennal sensitivity is selectively adapted to species specific host fruit odors. Differences in antennal response to several host fruit odor compounds were found between both species as well as between the host races. This indicates differences in antennal receptor cell types and/or numbers between species and host races. The flies had no prior host fruit experience which indicates that the measured differences are genetically based. Because Rhagoletis fruit flies are highly host specific parasites which meet and mate on their respective host plants, the results suggest that antennal sensitivity plays an important role in host shifts and speciation in this genus.

The estimation of parasitic pressure on the host populations is frequently required in parasitological investigations. The empirical values of prevalence of infection are used for this, however the latter one as an estimation of parasitic pressure on the host population is insufficient. For example, the same prevalence of infection can be insignificant for the population with high reproductive potential and excessive for the population with the low reproductive potential. Therefore the development of methods of an estimation of the parasitic pressure on the population, which take into account the features the host population, is necessary. Appropriate parameters are to be independent on view of the researcher, have a clear biological sense and be based on easily available characteristics. The methods of estimation of parasitic pressure on the host at the organism level are based on various individual viability parameters: longevity, resistance to difficult environment etc. The natural development of this approach for population level is the analysis of viability parameters of groups, namely, the changing of extinction probability of host population under the influence of parasites. Obviously, some critical values of prevalence of infection should exist; above theme the host population dies out. Therefore the heaviest prevalence of infection, at which the probability of host population size decreases during the some period is less than probability of that increases or preserves, can serve as an indicator of permissible parasitic pressure on the host population. For its designation the term "parasite capacity of the host population" is proposed. The real parasitic pressure on the host population should be estimated on the comparison with its parasite capacity. Parasite capacity of the host population is the heaviest possible prevalence of infection, at which, with the generation number T approaching infinity, there exists at least one initial population size ni(0) for which the probability of size decrease through T generations is less than the probability of its increase. [formula: see text] The estimation of the probabilities of host population size changes is necessary for the parasite capacity determination. The classical methods for the estimation of extinction probability of population are unsuitable in this case, as these methods require the knowledge of population growth rates and their variances for all possible population sizes. Thus, the development methods of estimate of extinction probability of population, based on the using of available parameters (sex ratio, fecundity, mortality, prevalence of infection PI) is necessary. The population size change can be considered as the Markov process. The probabilities of all changes of population size for a generation in this case are described by a matrix of transition probabilities of Markov process (pi) with dimensions Nmax x Nmax (maximum population size). The probabilities of all possible size changes for T generations can be calculated as pi T. Analyzing the behaviour matrix of transition at various prevalence of infection, it is possible to determine the parasite capacity of the host population. In constructing of the matrix of transition probabilities, should to be taken into account the features the host population and the influence of parasites on its reproductive potential. The set of the possible population size at a generation corresponds to each initial population size. The transition probabilities for the possible population sizes at a generation can be approximated to the binomial distribution. The possible population sizes at a generation nj(t + 1) can be calculated as sums of the number of survived parents N1 and posterities N2; their probabilities--as P(N1) x P(N2). The probabilities of equal sums N1 + N2 and nj(t + 1) > or = Nmax are added. The number of survived parents N1 may range from 0 to (1-PI) x ni(t). The survival probabilities can be estimated for each N1 as [formula: see text] The number of survived posterities N2 may range from 0 to N2max (the maximum number of posterities). N2max is [formula: see text] and the survival probabilities for each N2, is defined as [formula: see text] where [formula: see text], ni(t) is the initial population size (including of males and infected specimens of host), PI is the prevalence of infection, Q1 is the survival probabilities of parents, Pfemales is the frequency of females in the host population, K is the number of posterities per a female, and Q2 is the survival probabilities of posterities. When constructing matrix of transition probabilities of Markov process (pi), the procedure outlined above should be repeated for all possible initial population size. Matrix of transition probabilities for T generations is defined as pi T. This matrix (pi T) embodies all possible transition probabilities from the initial population sizes to the final population sizes and contains a wealth of information by itself. From the practical point of view, however, the plots of the probability of population size decrease are more suitable for analysis. They can be received by summing the probabilities within of lines of matrix from 0 to ni--1 (ni--the population size, which corresponds to the line of the matrix). Offered parameter has the number of advantages. Firstly, it is independent on a view of researcher. Secondly, it has a clear biological sense--this is a limit of prevalence, which is safe for host population. Thirdly, only available parameters are used in the calculation of parasite capacity: population size, sex ratio, fecundity, mortality. Lastly, with the availability of modern computers calculations do not make large labour. Drawbacks of this parameter: 1. The assumption that prevalence of infection, mortality, fecundity and sex ratio are constant in time (the situations are possible when the variability of this parameters can not be neglected); 2. The term "maximum population size" has no clear biological sense; 3. Objective restrictions exist for applications of this mathematical approach for populations with size, which exceeds 1000 specimens (huge quantity of computing operations--order Nmax 3*(T-1), work with very low probabilities). The further evolution of the proposed approach will allow to transfer from the probabilities of size changes of individual populations to be probabilities of size changes of population systems under the influence of parasites. This approach can be used at the epidemiology and in the conservation biology.  相似文献

Using Japanese literature, we created a consolidated list of host records of butterflies in Japan. The list used the host records described in eight major illustrated reference books, two checklists, and 14 other pieces of literature. The presence of larvae on plants, the observation of larvae eating plants or insects in the field were considered as host records. We collected all species recorded in Japan. Scientific, family, and Japanese names of butterflies were consolidated using the BINRAN database (http://binran.lepimages.jp/). Scientific and Japanese names of host plants were based on the YList database (http://ylist.info/). If scientific names of host plants were not found in YList, we used scientific names based on The Plant List (http://www.theplantlist.org/). Family names of host plants were based on the Catalogue of Life database (http://www.catalogueoflife.org/). Scientific, family, and Japanese names of host insects were based on the MOKUROKU database (http://konchudb.agr.agr.kyushu-u.ac.jp/mokuroku/) for Hymenoptera and the catalogue of the Paraneoptera of Japan published by the Entomological Society of Japan for Hemiptera. We also provided the references of each host record and the original names described in the referred literature. Two datasets, HostDB and ReferenceDB, were created to include 3600 records of butterfly larval hosts in Japan, along with scientific and Japanese names of each species and a literature list. These datasets will be useful for basic and applied biological studies of butterflies. Data files are stored in the Ecological Research Data Archives (http://db.cger.nies.go.jp/JaLTER/ER_DataPapers/) and available from http://hostbj.lepumus.net/.
