Museums are object-rich environments through which very diverse audiences move. When teams of scholars, museum educators, and exhibit designers translate research into museum exhibitions, what ways of seeing do they (un)intentionally encourage, challenge, or disrupt? When representing historic paradigms through museum media, what are the most effective ways to stimulate reflection and critique? These questions are raised in this review of the book 1001 Curious Things: Ye Olde Curiosity Shop and Native American Art and the Washington State History Museum exhibit of the same name.
The book and exhibit reviewed here invite us to peer through the windows of a Seattle curio shop to note particular aspects of early-20th-century Northwest Coast and Native Alaskan artifact trade. We learn how Ye Olde Curiosity Shop was a powerful mediator of public perception of indigenous peoples and an unexpected source of artifacts for notable ethnographic collections worldwide.  相似文献

The Seattle Art Museum has been fortunate to have received major collections of African, Asian, and Northwest Coast Native American art, which now make up the bulk of its permanent collection. The display of this “other” art poses problems for curators who wish to eschew what they term an anthropological presentation yet provide context for the viewer. For the recent exhibition of “Art from Africa: Long Steps Never Broke a Back,” the museum invited several artists, performers and scholars, all of whom were members of the cultures whose art was on display, to add their curatorial voices to the presentation. The central premise was to create an immersion experience of African art for the visitor, as defined by indigenous voices. Those voices came through an audio tour compiled from interview tapes with no added narration, and lengthy interviews on computer monitors. Some objects could be recognized through performance videos played as wall-sized projections. None of the artworks was identified by individual labels. During the exhibition, visitors were asked to complete comment questionnaires. Although many had positive things to say about the image of Africa gained through the exhibition, others expressed dismay at what they saw as negative stereotypes. The severest criticism came from Africans who had not been part of the advisory team. This article analyzes the responses, and questions the way in which one's personal image of Africa, whether one is curator or visitor, acts as mediator of experiences gained from an exhibition.  相似文献

The glycoprotein allergen Art v II, from the pollen of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) was treated with peptide:N-glycosidase F (PNGase F) to release asparagine-linked oligosaccharides. The oligosaccharides were isolated by gel permeation chromatography and their structures determined by 500-MHz 1H NMR spectroscopy, fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry, and high-pH anion-exchange chromatography. The high-mannose oligosaccharides Man5GlcNAc2, Man6GlcNAc2, Man7GlcNAc2, Man8GlcNAc2, and Man9GlcNAc2 were present in the ratios 2:49:19:24:6 and accounted for all the asparagine-linked oligosaccharides released from Art v II by PNGase F. The NH2-terminal amino acid sequences of Art v II and of four peptides generated by cyanogen bromide (CNBr) cleavage of deglycosylated Art v II were determined. The first 30 amino acid residues of Art v II did not contain any potential N-glycosylation sites. One potential N-glycosylation site was identified in one of the CNBr fragments. The native protein conformation was shown by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay inhibition assays to be essential for the binding of rabbit IgG to Art v II and for the binding of human IgE to the major IgE-binding epitope(s) in this allergen. At least one minor IgE-binding epitope still bound IgE after denaturation of the allergen. Removal of the high-mannose chains from denatured Art v II had no significant effect on the binding of human IgE to the minor IgE-binding epitope(s).  相似文献

Arginine-specific ADP-ribosyltransferase (Art) catalyzes the mono-ADP-ribosylation, in which it transfers a single ADP-ribose moiety of NAD to the arginine residue(s) of target proteins, and may regulate the function of the proteins or peptides in cellular processes. In vertebrates, Art family is consisted of seven members (Arts1-7), and these Arts are distributed among various tissues except B lymphocytes. Previously, we described molecular cloning, characterization and distribution of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored Arts, Art7.1 and Art7.2 (formerly, we referred as cgArt1 and cgArt2, respectively) in chicken tissues (Terashima et al (2005) Biochem J 389:853-861). Here, we demonstrate for the first time that Art7.1 was predominantly expressed on the surface of B cells from the bursa of Fabricius as a GPI-anchored form, as well as on T cells from the thymocytes. Furthermore, we show that the expression of Art7.1 molecules on B cells could modulate the B cell receptor (BCR) signalling and direct the B cell fate to maturation. Thus, our present observation sheds light on the Art molecule expressed on B cells and its possible functional role in BCR signalling.  相似文献
