This paper presents the detailed pulsatile pressure and flow velocity patterns inside an axis symmetric stenosis model with 75% constriction. The pressure and velocities have been calculated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations by the finite element method, the velocity profile in a straight tube caused by a pulsating driving pressure has been calculated first and then used as a boundary condition for the stenosis calculations. The results of the mathematical simulations of the stenosis model have been obtained in terms of velocity vectors, streamlines and isobars at 16 different instances in time, each 15 degrees apart during a cardiac cycle. The calculated velocity field shows that a vortex is developed at the wall distal to the stenosis as the velocity decreases from the peak systolic value. At the site of the vortex, a local pressure minimum is found due to the conversion of pressure to kinetic energy. When the flow is reversed, the reversal occurs first along the wall, thus forcing the vortex toward the the centre of the tube. As the reverse flow velocity increases, a vortex is also developed at the proximal site of the stenosis.  相似文献

The phenomenon of high-amplitude inflation waves resulting from a sharp axial acceleration of the aorta, as may occur in road accidents, is investigated theoretically. The aorta is modeled as an axisymmetric tapered membranic shell (tube) made of an incompressible, nonlinear viscoelastic material with cylindrical orthotropy. It is filled with an inviscid, incompressible fluid whose flow is considered as quasi-one dimensional along the tube axis. The equations of motion of the tube and of the fluid are solved numerically, by using a two-step explicit scheme, for several axial acceleration profiles. The solutions shows that an inflation wave is generated and it propagates in opposite direction to that of the acceleration. The wall stresses, deformations and their time derivatives as well as fluid velocity and pressure are determined along the tube at different time intervals. Peak axial and circumferential stresses are high, with the latter far exceeding the former. These stresses may cause rupture of the aorta.  相似文献

As an idealized problem of the motion of blood in small capillary blood vessels, the low Reynolds number flow of plasma (a newtonian fluid) in a circular cylindrical tube involving a series of circular disks is studied. It is assumed in this study that the suspended disks are equally spaced along the axis of the tube, and that their centers remain on the axis of the tube and that their faces are perpendicular to the tube axis. The inertial force of the fluid due to the convective acceleration is neglected on the basis of the smallness of the Reynolds number. The solution of the problem is derived for a quasi-steady flow involving infinitesimally thin disks. The numerical calculation is carried out for a set of different combinations of the interdisk distance and the ratio of the disk radius to the tube radius. The ratio of the velocity of the disk to the average velocity of the fluid is calculated. The different rates of transport of red blood cells and of plasma in capillary blood vessels are discussed. The average pressure gradient along the axis of the tube is computed, and the dependence of the effective viscosity of the blood on the hematocrit and the diameter of the capillary vessel is discussed.  相似文献

The structure of pulsatile flow in a rigid aortic bifurcation model was studied by means of a flow visualization technique and three-dimensional laser-Doppler anemometry. The model was made of glass, having the same shape as that of the average human aortic bifurcation. It was installed into a mock circulatory loop that generated physiological pulsatile flow. Flow separation was observed during accelerated and decelerated flow periods. Double helical flow existed inside the flow separation in the early accelerated flow period. In the decelerated flow period, disturbed flow appeared behind the separation zone. Flow was strongly disturbed during the back flow period, and then was gradually stabilized in the forward flow period. The flow separation and the disturbances released from the flow separation zone greatly influenced near-wall velocities along the lateral wall. The wave form of the near-wall velocity in the flow separation zone was much different from that observed in the aortic portion and behind the separation zone; for example, the magnitude of the negative peak velocity in the direction of the tube axis was larger than that of the positive one, and mean velocity in a cycle was very low. This abnormal phasic change of the near-wall velocity may be associated with atherogenesis. The three-dimensional velocity measurement is very useful for the detailed analysis of near-wall velocity patterns.  相似文献

The effect of steady shear flow on concentration polarization of plasma proteins and lipoproteins at the luminal surface of a semipermeable vessel wall was studied experimentally using suspensions of these molecules in a cell culture medium and a semipermeable membrane dialysis tube which served as a model of an implanted vascular graft or an artery. The study was carried out by flowing a cell culture medium containing fetal calf serum or bovine plasma lipoproteins or bovine albumin through a 7.5 mm diameter, 60 mm-long dialysis tube in steady flow under a physiologic mean arterial perfusion pressure of 100 mmHg, and measuring the filtration velocity of water (cell culture medium) at the vessel wall which varied as a consequence of the change in concentration of plasma protein particles at the luminal surface of the semipermeable membrane dialysis tube. It was found that for perfusates containing plasma proteins and/or lipoproteins, filtration velocity of water was the lowest in the absence of flow, and it increased or decreased as the flow rate (hence wall shear rate) increased or decreased from a certain non-zero value, indicating that surface concentration of protein particles varied reversibly as a direct function of flow rate. It was also found that at particle concentrations equivalent to those found in a culture medium containing serum at 5% by volume, plasma lipoproteins which were much smaller in number and lower in concentration but larger in size than albumin, had a much larger effect on the filtration velocity of water than albumin. These findings were very much the same as those previously obtained with a cultured endothelial cell monolayer, strongly suggesting that the flow-dependent variation in filtration velocity of water at a vessel wall results from a physical phenomenon, that is, flow-dependent concentration polarization of low density lipoproteins at the luminal surface of the endothelial cell monolayer.  相似文献

Numerical calculations are used to determine not only the wall shear stress but also the entry length in a laminar steady flow of an incompressible Newtonian fluid. The fluid is conveyed through rigid straight tubes with axially uniform cross sections, which mimic collapsed vessels. For each tube configuration, the "Navier-Stokes" equations are solved using the finite element method. The numerical tests are performed with the same value of the volume flow-rate whatever the tube configuration for three "Reynolds numbers". The wall shear stress is computed and determined along the axis of the tube, then the entry length is estimated by introducing two indexes by using: (i) the axial fluid velocity, and (ii) the wall shear stress. The results are analysed in order to exhibit the mechanical environment of cultured endothelial cells in the flow chamber for which the test conditions will be well-defined. For example, in a tube configuration where the opposite walls are in contact for which the inner perimeter and the area of the cross section are respectively given by 45 mm and 37.02 mm(2), the computed entry lengths with the criteria defined by (i) and (ii) are equals to about 118 and 126 mm, respectively for R(e0) = 500.  相似文献

With an objective to understanding arteriosclerosis, the blood flow in a cylindrical tube with local constriction is analysed. The cross-section of the tube is an ellipse, the axes of which are in an arbitrary position with respect to the axis of the tube. Blood is taken to be a Newtonian and homogeneous fluid. The cross-sectional area varies slowly with the longitudinal distance and the area change is so adjusted to take account of stenosis. The transverse velocity field and the effects of inertia on the primary velocity and pressure distribution are calculated to a first order in the relevant small parameter and effects of asymmetry on the wall shear stress and impedance are presented.  相似文献

A mathematical model has been developed to study the effect of particle drag parameter and frequency parameter on velocity and pressure gradient in nonlinear oscillatory two phase flow. The main purpose is to apply the model to study the combined effect of introduction of the catheter and elastic properties of the arterial wall on the pulsatile nature of the blood flow. We model the artery as an isotropic thin walled elastic tube and the catheter as a coaxial flexible tube. Blood is modeled as an incompressible particulate viscous Newtonian fluid. Perturbation technique has been applied to find the approximations for velocity and pressure gradient up to second order. Numerical solutions are investigated with graphical presentations to understand the effects of drag parameter, frequency parameter and phase angle on velocity along radial direction and pressure gradient along axial directions. As the drag parameter increases, mean pressure gradient and mean velocity will be decreased. As frequency parameter increases mean velocity profile bends near the outer wall. Due to elastic nature of artery wall, a thin catheter experience small oscillations and a thick catheter remains stationary inside the artery. Finally, the effect of catheterization on various physiologically important flow rate characteristics—mean velocity, mean pressure gradient are studied for a range of different catheter sizes, particle drag parameter and frequency parameters.  相似文献

The problem of pressure wave propagation through a viscous fluid contained in an orthotropic elastic tube is considered in connection with arterial blood flow. Solutions to the fluid flow and elasticity equations are obtained for the presence of a reflected wave. Numerical results are presented for both isotropic and orthotropic elastic tubes. In particular, the pressure pulse, flow rate, axial fluid velocity, and wall displacements are plotted vs. time at various stations along the ascending aorta of man. The results indicate an increase in the peak value of the pressure pulse and a decrease in the flow rate as the pulse propagates away from the heart. Finally, the velocity of wave propagation depends mainly on the tangential modulus of elasticity of the arterial wall, and anisotropy of the wall accounts in part for the reduction of longitudinal movements and an increase in the hydraulic resistance.  相似文献

In an elastic distensible tube, like a blood vessel, the radius is determined by the equality of the hydrostatic pressure and the elastic forces. If a viscous fluid flows through such a tube, there is a pressure drop along the line of flow. This results in a variation of the radius of the tube along the axis. An approximate expression, valid within a limited range of values, is derived for the radius of the tube as a function of the distance along the axis. Another approximate expression is derived for the relation between pressure drop and total flow in such a case. For sufficiently high rates of flow the pressure drop does not vary linearly with the flow, as in the usual poiseuille's law, but more rapidly.  相似文献

The behavior of nonlinear pulsatile flow of incompressible blood contained in an elastic tube is examined. The theory takes into account the nonlinear convective terms of the Navier-Stokes equations. The motion of the arterial wall is characterized by a set of linearized differential equations. The region bounded by the flexible arterial wall is mapped into a fixed area in which numerical discretization takes place. The finite element method (Galerkin weighted residual approach) is used for the solution of this nonlinear system. The results obtained are pressure distribution, velocity profile, flow rate and wall displacements along the elastic tube (20 cm long).  相似文献

The flow around adherent cells in a parallel-plate channel and that in a circular cylindrical tube are numerically analyzed, and their effects on the adherent cells are compared. The cells are modeled as rigid spherical particles and they are assumed to be attached to a wall of a 2D channel uniformly in a square array, or a wall of a circular tube regularly in a line along the tube axis. It is found that, when the size ratios of the particle-to-channel height and the particle-to-tube diameter are smaller than approximately 0.2, the distributions of the shear stress and the pressure exerted on the surface of an adherent particle as well as the drag force and torque acting on it compare favorably in the 2D channel flow and tube flow. As the size ratios increase from 0.2, the differences between the 2D channel and the tube increase drastically, especially when separation distances between neighboring particles are large.  相似文献

The measurement of blood velocity fields, volume flow, and arterial wall motion in the descending thoracic aorta provides essential hemodynamic information for both research and clinical diagnosis. The close proximity of the esophagus to the aorta in the dog makes it possible to obtain such data nonsurgically using an ultrasonic esophageal probe; however, the accuracy of such a probe is limited if the angle between the sound beam and the flow axis, known as the Doppler angle, is not precisely known. By use of a pulsed Doppler velocity meter (PUDVM) and a triangulation procedure, accurate empirical measurement of the Doppler angle has been obtained, allowing quantification of blood velocity scans across the aorta. Volume flow is obtained by integration of blood velocity profiles and arterial wall motion is measured with an ultrasonic echo tracking device. Accuracy of the probe was substantiated by comparison with ultrasonic and electromagnetic implanted flow cuff measurements. Use of the probe in measurement of blood velocity, volume flow and arterial wall motion at various locations along the 8- and 10-cm length of the descending thoracic aorta in adult beagle dogs is detailed. The simplicity, accuracy, and nontraumatic aspect of the technique should allow increasing use of such a probe in numerous research and clinical applications.  相似文献

Since the transport of biological fluids through contracting or expanding vessels is characterized by low seepage Reynolds numbers, the current study focuses on the viscous flow driven by small wall contractions and expansions of two weakly permeable walls. The scope is limited to two-dimensional symmetrical solutions inside a simulated channel with moving porous walls. In seeking an exact solution, similarity transformations are used in both space and time. The problem is first reduced to a nonlinear differential equation that is later solved both numerically and analytically. The analytical procedure is based on double perturbations in the permeation Reynolds number R and the wall expansion ratio alpha. Results are correlated and compared via variations in R and alpha. Under the auspices of small [R] and [alpha], the analytical result constitutes a practical equivalent to the numerical solution. We find that, when suction is coupled with wall contraction, rapid flow turning is precipitated near the wall where the boundary layer is formed. Conversely, when injection is paired with wall expansion, the flow adjacent to the wall is delayed. In this case, the viscous boundary layer thickens as injection or expansion rates are reduced. Furthermore, the pressure drop along the plane of symmetry increases when the rate of contraction is increased and when either the rate of expansion or permeation is reduced. As nonlinearity is retained, our solutions are valid from a large cross-section down to the state of a completely collapsed system.  相似文献

Ceramic membrane microfilter as an immobilized enzyme reactor.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study investigated the use of a ceramic microfilter as an immobilized enzyme reactor. In this type of reactor, the substrate solution permeates the ceramic membrane and reacts with an enzyme that has been immobilized within its porous interior. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of permeation rate on the observed kinetic parameters for the immobilized enzyme in order to assess possible mass transfer influences or shear effects. Kinetic parameters were found to be independent of flow rate for immobilized penicillinase and lactate dehydrogenase. Therefore, neither mass transfer nor shear effects were observed for enzymes immobilized within the ceramic membrane. Both the residence time and the conversion in the microfilter reactor could be controlled simply by regulating the transmembrane pressure drop. This study suggests that a ceramic microfilter reactor can be a desirable alternative to a packed bed of porous particles, especially when an immobilized enzyme has high activity and a low Michaelis constant.  相似文献

We investigate the mechanical strength of adhesion and the dynamics of detachment of the membrane from the cytoskeleton of red blood cells (RBCs). Using hydrodynamical flows, we extract membrane tethers from RBCs locally attached to the tip of a microneedle. We monitor their extrusion and retraction dynamics versus flow velocity (i.e., extrusion force) over successive extrusion-retraction cycles. Membrane tether extrusion is carried out on healthy RBCs and ATP-depleted or -inhibited RBCs. For healthy RBCs, extrusion is slow, constant in velocity, and reproducible through several extrusion-retraction cycles. For ATP-depleted or -inhibited cells, extrusion dynamics exhibit an aging phenomenon through extrusion-retraction cycles: because the extruded membrane is not able to retract properly onto the cell body, each subsequent extrusion exhibits a loss of resistance to tether growth over the tether length extruded at the previous cycle. In contrast, the additionally extruded tether length follows healthy dynamics. The extrusion velocity L depends on the extrusion force f according to a nonlinear fashion. We interpret this result with a model that includes the dynamical feature of membrane-cytoskeleton association. Tether extrusion leads to a radial membrane flow from the cell body toward the tether. In a distal permeation regime, the flow passes through the integral proteins bound to the cytoskeleton without affecting their binding dynamics. In a proximal sliding regime, where membrane radial velocity is higher, integral proteins can be torn out, leading to the sliding of the membrane over the cytoskeleton. Extrusion dynamics are governed by the more dissipative permeation regime: this leads to an increase of the membrane tension and a narrowing of the tether, which explains the power law behavior of L(f). Our main result is that ATP is necessary for the extruded membrane to retract onto the cell body. Under ATP depletion or inhibition conditions, the aging of the RBC after extrusion is interpreted as a perturbation of membrane-cytoskeleton linkage dynamics.  相似文献

The problem of fluid motion in renal tubules, in contrast to ordinary flow through cylinders with impermeable walls, is complicated by the existence of radial velocities generated by reabsorption processes. As a first approach to this problem, the Navier Stokes equations for axially symmetric, slow flow in an infinite cylinder whose walls reabsorb fluid are integrated. If the rate of reabsorption is constant, the solutions resemble the conventional Poiseuille flow, i.e., the longitudinal velocity profile is parabolic. In addition the drop in mean pressure is proportional to the mean axial flow, the length of tube between reference points, and inversely proportional to the fourth power of the radius. If the rate of reabsorption is a linear function of the distance from the origin, the presence of an additive term alters these relations. If, for example, the gradient in reabsorption is positive, the axial velocity profile tends to flatten and when the gradient is sufficiently large, the maximum velocity moves from the center of the stream toward the periphery, leaving a relative minimum at the center. In passing from the center of the tube to the walls, the radial velocity passes through a miximum, regardless of the reabsorption properties of the wall.  相似文献

A steady flow, in vitro model of distal arterial bypass graft junctions was used to examine the effects of junction angle and flow rate on the local velocity field. Three test sections were fabricated from Plexiglas tubing having anastomotic junction angles of either 30, 45, or 60 deg. Flow visualization revealed velocity profiles skewed toward the outer wall with a flow split around a clear stagnation point along the outer wall. Laser Doppler anemometry [LDA] measurements confirmed a distinct stagnation point at the outer wall and both reverse and forward shear were detected immediately upstream and downstream, respectively, of this site. Axial velocities and shear rates along the outer wall were higher than along the inner wall and occurred in the junction angle order: 45, 60, and 30 deg. This study clearly identified changes in wall shear which varied with the anastomotic angle and flow rate.  相似文献

The propagation of harmonic pressure waves through a Newtonian fluid contained within a thick-walled, viscoelastic tube is considered as a model of arterial blood flow. The fluid is assumed to be homogeneous and Newtonian, and its motion to be laminar and axisymmetric. The wall is assumed to be isotropic, incompressible, linear, and viscoelastic. It is also assumed that the motion is such that the convective acceleration is negligible. The motion of the fluid is described by the linearized form of the Navier-Stokes equations and the motion of the wall by classical elasticity theory. The frequency dependence of the wall mechanical properties are represented by a three parameter, relaxation-type model. Using boundary conditions describing the continuity of stress and velocity components in the fluid and the wall, explicit solutions for the system of equations of the model have been obtained. The longitudinal fluid impedance has been expressed in terms of frequency and the system parameters. The frequency equation has been solved and the propagation constant also expressed in terms of frequency and system parameters. The results indicate that the fluid impedance is smaller than predicted by the rigid tube model or by Womersley''s constrained elastic tube model. Also, the velocity of propagation is generally slower and the transmission per wavelength less than predicted by Womersley''s elastic tube model. The propagation constant is very sensitive to changes in the degree of wall viscoelasticity.  相似文献
