The effect of temperature on sex-ratios in 27 families of sea bass reared in the same tank from the fertilization stage onward was investigated. An excess of males (68%) was found in the groups that were reared at high temperature (mean +/- standard deviation: 20+/-1 degrees C) until they reached the mean size of 8.1 cm (Standard Length, 149 days post-fertilization [p.f.]). Masculinization was higher (89% of males) in the groups maintained at low temperature (13 degrees C), from fertilization to a mean length of 6.5 cm (346 days p.f.). Shifts from high to low temperature at 8.1cm and from low to high temperature at 6.5 cm had no consequence on the sex-ratio. The percentage of males showing intratesticular oocytes was higher at low temperature (63%) than at high temperature (36%), suggesting that these males may be sensitive fish that have been masculinized by environmental factors. Fish sampled in the groups reared at high (2,200 fish) and low (500 fish) temperature were genotyped on three microsatellite loci. This allowed them to be assigned to the breeders used in the crossing design, thus permitting an analysis of parental influence on sex-ratios. In groups reared at high temperature, both parents had a significant additive effect on the percentage of females, and the interaction between sire and dam was not significant. Genotype temperature interactions were also detected and their existence suggests the interesting possibility of selecting nonsensitive genotypes in breeding programs.  相似文献

The sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, is an eurhyaline marine fish. Juveniles of this species are known to frequent estuaries and lagoons where salinity is lower than in the open sea. Sex determination occurs during this phase of fish life and has been shown labile and sensitive to environmental factors. In this work, the effect of rearing salinity on sex determination and early development of the sea bass was investigated. An excess of males (87%) was found in all groups and the salinity level [(natural sea water salinity, mean: 37‰) vs. (15‰)], when maintained constant, had no effect on the sex-ratio. The transfer from low to high salinity at 93 days post-fertilization (p.f.) increased the percentage of males (93%) suggesting that sexual differentiation in this species may be influenced by such an osmotic stress. Growth was improved by a 15‰ salinity at the beginning of larval rearing (14 days p.f.) and at the end of pre-growing (234-458 days p.f.), periods during which low temperatures were applied. Survival during larval rearing and nursery were also improved in the groups reared at low salinity and so was swimbladder inflation. These results show that sea bass juveniles have a low saline preferendum, a finding that corresponds to the conditions they actually encounter in the wild during their juvenile ecophase; sex determination is not directly modulated by the salinity level but seems to be subjected to complex environmental regulations.  相似文献

This report describes a study of the gonad differentiation in fingerlings of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) belonging to different size groups. Fishes were divided into four groups according to their weight: Group 1 (4.5 ± 0.7 g), Group 2 (9.2 ± 0.8 g), Group 3 (14.8 ± 1.8 g), and Group 4 (21.8 ± 2.3 g). In all groups, low percentages of undifferentiated or early sexually differentiated fish were found. Higher percentages of fully differentiated ovaries were found in Groups 1 and 3. Fully differentiated testes occurred in 90% of Group 4. Ninety percent of fish in Group 2 had gonads with intratesticular oocytes. This highlights the occurrence of intersexual cases and suggests that at this size, the fish is susceptible to phenotypic plasticity. The results of the present study show that sexual differentiation of the gonads is found in fish at 4.5 g weight. The ambiguous relationship between the observed gonad morpho-functional characteristics and fish size suggests a subject-dependent sexual differentiation.  相似文献

Groups of sexually undifferentiated sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were fed with the androgen 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) during sex differentiation. MT treatment increased males from 79±3% in the controls (the usual 3:1 male:female sex ratio of cultured sea bass) to 100±0%, implying that in the treated groups one out of each five resulting males was a masculinized female (neomale). Thirteen males from the MT treated groups were taken as the parental generation and their sperm used to individually fertilize a pool of eggs from unrelated females. The probability of having at least one neomale was 95% and most probably two or three of the males used were neomales. The offspring from each family were reared separately under the same environmental conditions. Samples were taken at 11 and 15 months of age, during and after sex differentiation, respectively. Results showed that females predominated among the larger fish whereas males and undifferentiated fish predominated among the smaller ones. Intersexes exhibited an intermediate size. All fish with a body length smaller than 12 cm were undifferentiated. These results suggest that sex differentiation is more dependent on length than on age. At 15 months, sex ratios were male-biased in all families, except one (females ranged from 5 to 50%) and only two families had sex ratios not significantly different from 1:1, suggesting that the mechanism of sex determination in the sea bass is not of a XX/XY or ZW/ZZ type since no family exhibited a female-biased progeny, as would be expected from both types. Results support the hypothesis that factors other than genetic, i.e., environmental, may act epigenetically on the sex determination mechanisms of sea bass, as has been demonstrated in other fishes.  相似文献

The histological structure of the gonads was studied in yellow eels sampled from a coastal lagoon and from stocks reared in an aquaculture plant showing different sex ratios. Gonad development related to body size rather than to age and underwent an intermediate stage characterized by a structure of an early testis but containing oogonia and oocytes. This gonad was called the Syrski organ and the stage juvenile ambisexual. Ovaries were found in eels from 22–30 cm in length, possibly derived from undifferentiated gonads or from Syrski organs. Fully differentiated testes were found in eels >35 cm, derived from Syrski organs. These observations support the results of previous research. From elvers and in eels up to 15–16 cm in length, growth of the gonadal primordium is due to primordial germ cell migration. In eels > 15 cm multiplication of primordial cells begins. Oogonial clones were found in eels > 18 cm in length, whilespermatogonium B clones were observed in eels >30 cm in length. The dynamics of sex differentiation was different among stocks with different ultimate sex ratios: ovaries were found in shorter eels in stocks with a prevalence of females, in longer eels in stocks with a prevalence of males. This result supports the hypothesis of a metagametic (environmental) sex determination. The somatic cells in contact with germ cells and those in the interstitium appeared early during gonad development and preceded germ cell differentiation. This suggests that somatic cells are the targets of the environmental factors influencing sex differentiation.  相似文献

Tail beat frequency of sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) (23.5 ± 0·5 cm, LT ), swimming at the front of a school was significantly higher than when swimming at the rear, for all water velocities tested from 14·8 to 32 cm s−1. The logarithm of oxygen consumption rate, and the tail beat frequency of solitary swimming sea bass (28·8 ± 0·4 cm, LT ), were each correlated linearly with swimming speed, and also with one another. The tail beat frequency of individual fish was 9–14% lower when at the rear of a school than when at the front, corresponding to a 9–23% reduction in oxygen consumption rate.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that sex determination in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) Can be affected by the incubating temperature during the very early developmental stages, eggs from the same batch of spontaneously spawned broodstock were divided at the stage of half-epiboly into three groups according to rearing temperature: G13 = 13 degrees C, G15 = 15 degrees C, and G20 = 20 degrees C. Temperature treatment lasted until the middle of metamorphosis (17-18 mm total length, [TL]), and, with the exclusion of water temperature, all biotic and abiotic conditions were identical for the three experimental groups. The on-growing phase was performed under ambient photoperiod and temperature conditions for all groups. Sex proportions were determined by histological examination of the gonads of fish at 308, 467, and 568 days posthatch (DPH). At 308 DPH (TL: 135-201 mm), 100% of the specimens had differentiated into males and females. A significantly higher (P < 0.01) proportion of females was found in groups G13 (72-74%) and G15 (67-73%) than in group G20 (24-28%). At the final sampling there was no statistically significant difference in body weight between the experimental groups. However, in all groups, female fish were larger than males (P < 0.001). Results provide for the first time clear evidence that temperature during the very early developmental stages is the crucial factor affecting the process of sex differentiation of the sea bass, with low rearing temperatures (13 or 15 degrees C) resulting in sex proportions consistently skewed in favor of females.  相似文献

This paper presents data on the reproductive biology of Liza subviridis , a little studied mullet species. The fish is heterosexual, exhibiting external fertilization. Six maturity stages can be macroscopically identified in the testes and seven in the ovaries. The macroscopic changes in the gonads are manifestations of histological changes occurring in the development of sperm cells and oocytes. First sexual maturity is attained in the length ranges of 9.5–11.5 cm and 10.5–11.5 cm in male and female fish respectively. The fecundity for fish measuring 10.3–13.9 cm in standard length ranged from 40 000–145 000 eggs. The relationship between fecundity ( F ) and length ( L ) can be represented as: F = 1.9044 L 4.2998. The spawning duration in L. subviridis is restricted to a short and definite period, with all ripe ova being released within a single spawning act. A pronounced spawning season can be detected to extend from June to November. However, during off-seasons, some spawning also occurs. The correlations between spawning, rainfall and air temperature is discussed.  相似文献

Total by-products (TBP) obtained by filleting farmed and wild European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were analyzed to evaluate if, on the basis of the percentage yield, total lipid content and fatty acid composition, they can be considered a resource of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Results show that TBP from intensively farmed fish (IFF) contain higher total lipid content and have a higher level of n-3 PUFA rich in eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosaexaenoic acid (DHA), compared to extensively farmed fish (EFF) and to wild fish (WF) (P < 0.05). This difference may suggest a way of promotion of TBP from IFF sea bass through the n-3 PUFA recovery by extraction.  相似文献

Growth rate and assimilation of essential fatty acids were analysed in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) fed different diets. Gas Chromatographie analyses of total lipids in commercial diets indicated excessive presence of saturated, mono and dienoic fatty acids, while the content of to 3 HUFA was very low. Fatty acid patterns of liver and white muscle farmed sea bass reflected the contents of the dietary lipids. The concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly ω3 HUFA was significantly lower when compared with samples from the wild population. The atherogenic and fish lipid quality indices confirmed the higher nutritional quality of wild sea bass when compared with farmed fishes.  相似文献

In the present study the fatty acids, cholesterol and vitamin composition in farmed sea bass (8 fish per species per farm; weight range: 389.6–395.8 g, total length range: 297–316 mm) and sea bream (8 fish per species per farm; weight range: 386.8–391.7 g, total length range: 263–268 mm) from three cage farms (?skele in northern Cyprus, Antalya and Mu?la in Turkey) were compared during the harvesting period in June–July 2011. The results showed that the muscles of D. labrax and S. aurata farmed fish were rich in n‐3 fatty acids, but with important differences. For example, the muscles of sea bass farmed in ?skele were rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Palmitic acid (C16:0) was the primary saturated fatty acid, and oleic acid (C18:1 n‐9) the primary monounsaturated fatty acid in the muscle and liver samples of the cage‐farmed sea bass and sea bream. There were no significant differences in the cholesterol content in the muscles of sea bream farmed in ?skele, Antalya or Mu?la. In conclusion, the n‐3/n‐6 ratio in the muscle of farmed S. aurata and Dlabrax is within the recommended limits for a healthy human diet, being very suitable for human nutrition.  相似文献

Atlantic cod Gadus morhua were collected from Smith Sound, Newfoundland in January 1999. Visual examination of females (n=150) and males (n=126) revealed that some large fish (42–79 cm) had underdeveloped gonads. Histological examination of underdeveloped ovaries indicated that the majority of these females were undergoing mass resorption of oocytes and would not have spawned in 1999. Fish in this condition included females that were aborting their first attempt at maturation and females that had spawned the previous year but were failing to re-ripen. Somatic and liver condition were significantly lower (P<0·05) for fish undergoing mass oocyte resorption than ripening females, suggesting that the interruption in the maturation cycle may have been related to insufficient nutrient storage. In males, testes of some adult fish were considered to be non-reproductive as they showed no signs of ripening and probably would not have spawned in 1999. Liver condition was significantly higher (P<0·05) for non-reproductive males than those that were ripening. Disruptions in male and female reproductive cycles may also have been related to water temperatures that were too cold (0–0·5° C) for successful gamete development. Immature gametes (perinucleolar oocytes in females; spermatogonia in males) showed no signs of breakdown in non-reproductive individuals, suggesting that they retained the potential to develop and spawn gametes in 2000.  相似文献

Under constant short photoperiod, the spawning time of 2-year-old sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax was advanced as compared to controls, whereas spawnings were delayed under constant long photoperiod. High plasma levels of 17β-oestradiol (E2/) and testosterone (T) in females were coincident with the appearance of vitellogenic oocytes in the ovary, while high levels of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and T in males were coincident with the presence of spermiating males. Although plasma levels of E2 in females and 11-KT in males were low during the remainder of the cycle, levels of T were always >1 ng ml−1 in both sexes, suggesting that T could play an important role during the initial stages of gonadal development. The profiles of E2 and T in females and 11-KT and T in males exposed to constant short days were similar to those in the control group, but fish which were maintained under constant long photoperiods showed a bimodal pattern of these steroids. The results obtained from fish exposed to constant photoperiod regimes provide further evidence that an endogenous process could be operating to control the reproduction of sea bass.  相似文献

The spawning induction activity of dissolved and pelleted (D-Ala6, Pro9 N ethylamide) luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa) stored for various periods was assessed in mature female sea bass. The spawning response of mature fish was reduced significantly after injection of dissolved LHRHa (20 μg kg−1) stored for more than 90 days in a refrigerator (4–10°C) or for more than 30 days at room temperature (28–30°C). Similar to fish administered fresh preparations of LHRHa, fish spawned successfully after injection of a solution of LHRHa previously frozen, subjected to alternate freezing and thawing, exposed to sunlight or implanted pelleted LHRHa (50 ng kg−1) stored at room temperature for 30–120 days. Loss of hormone bioactivity after prolonged storage may have been due to bacterial growth in solubilized preparations. Injection or implantation of stored LHRHa did not influence egg production among treated sea bass. These results demonstrated the relatively prolonged shelf life of stored LHRHa.  相似文献

Based on egg collection records, spontaneous spawning activity of sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), reared in floating net cages followed a semilunar cycle. The peak of multiple spawnings coincided with declining spring tides of quarter moon periods. Maximum diameter of intra-ovarian, ripe oocytes (0.51–0.55 mm) occurred in synchrony with the quarter moon periods. Smaller oocytes (0.44–0.47 mm) were sampled during the new and full moon periods. Two structural analogues of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRHa) (des-Gly10, d -Ala6-LHRH ethylamide and d -Ala6, Pro9-Nethylamide-LHRH), in pelleted or dissolved form, induced mature female sea bass with a mean egg diameter of at least 0.40 mm to spawn at any day during the lunar cycle. The onset of spontaneous and LHRHa-induced spawnings occurred during low tides in the evening until dawn (from 19.00 to 05.00 hours). These results demonstrate that LHRHa can effectively induce mature sea bass to spawn independent of the highly predictable semilunar spawning rhythm. In addition, the occurrence of both spontaneous and hormone-induced spawnings at a precise period of the day suggest a tidal and diurnal cue entraining spawning of mature female sea bass.  相似文献

The ontogenetic development of gonads from embryo to adult was observed histologically in the viviparous teleost, Gambusia affinis. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) appeared in the subendodermal space of the embryo 14 days before birth, and then transferred to the dorsal mesentery to form paired genital ridges 12 days before birth. The PGCs proliferated in the genital ridge, forming gonadal primordia 10 days before birth. All gonadal primordia differentiated to the ovary containing oocytes 2 days before birth, but then redifferentiated to the ovary and testis just after birth. This indicates that the mosquitofish is a juvenile hermaphroditic species. The characteristics of gonadal sex differentiation just after birth were enlargement of the oocytes in females, and invasion of somatic cells from the hilar region to an inner portion of the gonad in males. The paired ovary fused at the basal area 5 days after birth, then on the ventral and dorsal portions, developing into a single ovary 10 days after birth. During this time a single ovarian cavity was formed on the dorsal portion of the ovary. The paired testes fused only at the basal area and became a single testis having two main lobes 10 days after birth. The oocytes gradually developed and began vitellogenesis 100 days after birth, but did not reach maturation until 110 days after birth. Spermatogenic cells formed cysts at 20 days, began meiosis at 70 days, and matured to form sperm balls 90 days after birth. The male fish sexually matured earlier than the female.  相似文献

European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax of the north‐western (NW) and south‐eastern (SE) Mediterranean Sea strains were exposed to different temperatures (13, 17 or 21° C) during the larval rearing (11–51 days post hatching, dph) or nursery periods (55–95 dph), in order to examine the effects of temperature on sex differentiation and subsequent growth during the first year of life. Higher growth was observed during exposure to higher temperatures, but fish of the NW strain exposed to 13 or 17° C during larval rearing exhibited compensatory growth once exposure to the lower temperatures finished, and as a result their final size at 300 dph was similar or greater to the group exposed to 21° C. Fish exposed to 17° C during the nursery period also had similar size to fish exposed to 21° C after 300 days of rearing, but the fish exposed to 13° C remained significantly smaller (ANOVA, n  = 55–100, P  < 0·05). There were significant differences in the sex ratio among the fish exposed to different temperatures during the two periods of rearing, with high temperature (21° C) resulting in a significantly higher percentage of males in the population, both in the NW (ANOVA, n  = 2, P  < 0·04) and SE populations (ANOVA, n  = 2, P  < 0·01). The masculinization effect of high temperature was significantly stronger during the larval rearing stage, both in the NW (ANOVA, n  = 2, P  < 0·005) and SE populations (ANOVA, n  = 2, P  < 0·01). None of the temperature manipulations could produce 100% females, suggesting that there is a part of the genetic component in sex differentiation which is not labile to environmental influence.  相似文献

Gonad development and sex differentiation from embryos to 594‐day‐old individuals were investigated in farmed Acipenser naccarii using light and transmission electron microscopy. The migrating primordial germ cells first appear along the dorsal wall of the body cavity in embryos 1.5 days before hatching. The gonadal ridge, containing a few primary primordial germ cells (PGC‐1) surrounded by enveloping cells, appears in 16‐day‐old larvae. At 60 days, the undifferentiated gonad is lamellar and PGC‐1 multiply, producing PGC‐2. In 105‐day‐old juveniles, a distinct germinal area with advanced PGC‐2 appears on the lateral side near the mesogonium and the first blood vessels are visible. At 180 days, putative ovaries with a notched gonadal epithelium and putative testes with a smooth one appear, together with adipose tissue on the distal side. In 210‐day‐old juveniles, active proliferation of germ cells begins in the putative ovaries, whereas putative testes still contain only a few germ cells. The onset of meiosis and reorganization of stromal tissue occurs in ovaries of 292‐day‐old individuals. Ovaries with developed lamellae enclosing early oocyte clusters and follicles with perinucleolar oocytes occur at 594 days. Meiotic stages are never found, even in anastomozing tubular testes of 594‐day‐old individuals. Steroid producing cells are detected in the undifferentiated gonad and in the differentiated ones of both sexes. Anatomical differentiation of the gonad precedes cytological differentiation and female differentiation largely precedes that of the male. Gonad development and differentiation are also associated with structural changes of connective tissue, viz. collagen‐rich areas are massive in developing testes and reduced in ovaries. J.
