This study aimed to investigate mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue during maximal concentric and isometric leg extensions inducing similar torque decrements. Nine physically active men performed two separate fatiguing sessions maintained until similar torque decreases were obtained. The first session, only conducted under isokinetic concentric conditions (CON), consisted of three series of 30 maximal voluntary concentric knee extensions (60 degrees/s). The second session, exclusively isometric (ISO), mimicked the torque decreases registered during the CON session while performing three long-lasting ISO contractions. Maximal voluntary torque, activation level (twitch interpolation technique), electromyographic activity (root mean square and median frequency) of the vastus lateralis muscle, and electrically evoked doublet-twitch mechanical properties were measured before and at the end of each of the three series. After the three series, similar torque decrements were obtained for both fatiguing procedures. The total fatiguing contraction durations were not different among procedures. With equivalent voluntary torque decrements, the doublet-twitch amplitude reduction was significantly greater (P<0.01) during the two first series of the CON procedure compared with ISO. No difference was observed for the third series. Although no difference was recorded with fatigue for median frequency changes between CON and ISO, activation levels and root mean square values demonstrated greater reductions (P<0.05) for all three series during the ISO procedure compared with CON. Performing CON or ISO fatiguing exercises demonstrated different fatigue origins. With CON exercises, peripheral fatigue developed first, followed by central fatigue, whereas with ISO exercises the fatigue pattern was inverted.  相似文献

We investigated the firing rate of motor units in the vastus lateralis muscle in five healthy young men (mean = 21.4 yr, SD = 0.9) during a sequence of isometric constant-torque contractions repeated to exhaustion. The contractions were sustained at 20% of the maximal voluntary level, measured at the beginning of the test sequence. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded via quadrifilar fine-wire electrodes and subsequently decomposed into their constituent motor unit action potentials to obtain the motor unit firing times. In addition, we measured the whole muscle mechanical properties during the fatigue task using electrical stimulation. The firing rate of motor units first decreased within the first 10-20% of the endurance time of the contractions and then increased. The firing rate increase was accompanied by recruitment of additional motor units as the force output remained constant. The elicited twitch and tetanic torque responses first increased and then decreased. The two processes modulated in a complementary fashion at the same time. Our data suggest that, when the vastus lateralis muscle is activated to maintain a constant torque output, its motoneuron pool receives a net excitatory drive that first decreases to compensate for the short-lived potentiation of the muscle force twitch and then increases to compensate for the diminution of the force twitch. The underlying inverse relationship between the firing rate and the recruitment threshold that has been reported for nonfatigued contractions is maintained. We, therefore, conclude that the central nervous system control of vastus lateralis motor units remains invariant during fatigue in submaximal isometric isotonic contractions.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to study the relationships among movement velocity, torque output and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the knee extensor muscles under eccentric and concentric loading. Fourteen male subjects performed maximal voluntary eccentric and concentric constant-velocity knee extensions at 45, 90, 180 and 360 degrees.s-1. Myoelectric signals were recorded, using surface electrodes, from the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and rectus femoris muscles. For comparison, torque and full-wave rectified EMG signals were amplitude-averaged through the central half (30 degrees-70 degrees) of the range of motion. For each test velocity, eccentric torque was greater than concentric torque (range of mean differences: 20%-146%, P less than 0.05). In contrast, EMG activity for all muscles was lower under eccentric loading than velocity-matched concentric loading (7%-31%, P less than 0.05). Neither torque output nor EMG activity for the three muscles changed across eccentric test velocities (P greater than 0.05). While concentric torque increased with decreasing velocity, EMG activity for all muscles decreased with decreasing velocity (P less than 0.05). These data suggest that under certain high-tension loading conditions (especially during eccentric muscle actions), the neural drive to the agonist muscles was reduced, despite maximal voluntary effort. This may protect the musculoskeletal system from an injury that could result if the muscle was to become fully activated under these conditions.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the superficial quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle electromyogram (EMG) during fatiguing knee extensions. Thirty young adults were evaluated for their one-repetition maximum (1RM) during a seated, right-leg, inertial knee extension. All subjects then completed a single set of repeated knee extensions at 50% 1RM, to failure. Subjects performed a knee extension (concentric phase), held the weight with the knee extended for 2s (isometric phase), and lowered the weight in a controlled manner (eccentric phase). Raw EMG of the vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) muscles were full-wave rectified, integrated and normalized to the 1RM EMG, for each respective phase and repetition. The EMG median frequency (f(med)) was computed during the isometric phase. An increase in QF muscle EMG was observed during the concentric phase across the exercise duration. VL EMG was greater than the VM and RF muscles during the isometric phase, in which no significant changes occurred in any of the muscles across the exercise duration. A significant decrease in EMG across the exercise duration was observed during the eccentric phase, with the VL EMG greater than the VM and RF muscles. A greater decrease in VL and RF muscle f(med) during the isometric phase, than the VM muscle, was observed with no gender differences. The findings demonstrated differential recruitment of the superficial QF muscle, depending on the contraction mode during dynamic knee extension exercise, where VL muscle dominance appears to manifest across the concentric-isometric-eccentric transition.  相似文献

Training can improve muscle strength and endurance in 78- to 84-yr-old men.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nine men, 78-84 yr of age, participated in a dynamometer training program 2-3 times/wk, totaling 25 sessions, using voluntary maximal isometric, concentric, and eccentric right knee-extension actions (30 and 180 degrees/s). Measurements of muscle strength with a Kin-Com dynamometer and simultaneous electromyograms (EMG) were performed of both sides before and after the training period. Muscle biopsies were taken from the right vastus lateralis muscle. The total quadriceps cross-sectional area was measured with computerized tomography. Training led to an increase in maximal torque for concentric (10% at 30 degrees/s) and eccentric (13-19%) actions in the trained leg. The EMG activity increased at maximal eccentric activities. The total cross-sectional quadriceps area of the trained leg increased by 3%, but no changes were recorded in muscle fiber areas in these subjects, who already had large mean fiber areas (5.15 microns 2 x 10(3)). The fatigue index measured from 50 consecutive concentric contractions at 180 degrees/s decreased and the citrate synthase activity increased in all but one subject. The results demonstrate that increased neural activation accompanies an increase in muscle strength at least during eccentric action in already rather active elderly men and that muscle endurance may also be improved with training.  相似文献

Previous investigations that have studied motor unit firing rates following strength training have been limited to small muscles, isometric training, or interventions involving exercise machines. We examined the effects of ten weeks of supervised barbell deadlift training on motor unit firing rates for the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris during a 50% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) assessment. Twenty-four previously untrained men (mean age  = 24 years) were randomly assigned to training (n = 15) or control (n = 9) groups. Before and following the intervention, the subjects performed isometric testing of the right knee extensors while bipolar surface electromyographic signals were detected from the two muscles. The signals were decomposed into their constituent motor unit action potential trains, and motor units that demonstrated accuracy levels less than 92.0% were not considered for analysis. One thousand eight hundred ninety-two and 2,013 motor units were examined for the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris, respectively. Regression analyses were used to determine the linear slope coefficients (pulses per second [pps]/% MVC) and y-intercepts (pps) of the mean firing rate and firing rate at recruitment versus recruitment threshold relationships. Deadlift training significantly improved knee extensor MVC force (Cohen''s d = .70), but did not influence force steadiness. Training had no influence on the slopes and y-intercepts for the mean firing rate and firing rate at recruitment versus recruitment threshold relationships. In agreement with previous cross-sectional comparisons and randomized control trials, our findings do not support the notion that strength training affects the submaximal control of motor units.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that skeletal muscle contraction activates nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB), a putative regulator of muscle protein breakdown. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis of healthy humans before, immediately after, and 1 h after fatiguing resistance exercise of the lower limbs. Biopsies were analyzed for nuclear NF-kappaB DNA binding activity by using electrophoretic mobility shift assay. NF-kappaB activity, measured immediately after exercise, was less than preexercise activity; after 1-h recovery, activity returned to preexercise levels. In follow-up studies in adult mice, basal NF-kappaB activity varied among individual muscles. NF-kappaB activity in diaphragm fiber bundles was decreased after a 10-min bout of fatiguing tetanic contractions in vitro. NF-kappaB activity in soleus was increased by 12 days of unloading by hindlimb suspension; this increase was reversed by 10 min of fatiguing exercise. These data provide no support for our original hypothesis. Instead, acute fatiguing exercise appears to decrease NF-kappaB activity in muscle under a variety of conditions.  相似文献

Muscle activity was recorded from the flexor carpi radialis muscle during static and dynamic-concentric wrist flexion in six subjects, who had exhibited large differences in histochemically identified muscle fibre composition. Motor unit recruitment patterns were identified by sampling 310 motor units and counting firing rates in pulses per second (pps). During concentric wrist flexion at 30% of maximal exercise intensity the mean firing rate was 27 (SD 13) pps. This was around twice the value of 12 (SD 5) pps recorded during sustained static contraction at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction, despite a larger absolute force level during the static contraction. A similar pattern of higher firing rates during dynamic exercise was seen when concentric wrist flexion at 60% of maximal exercise intensity [30 (SD 14) pps] was compared with sustained static contraction at 60% of maximal voluntary contraction [19 (SD 8) pps]. The increase in dynamic exercise intensity was accomplished by recruitment of additional motor units rather than by increasing the firing rate as during static contractions. No difference in mean firing rates was found among subjects with different muscle fibre composition, who had previously exhibited marked differences in metabolic response during corresponding dynamic contractions. It was concluded that during submaximal dynamic contractions motor unit firing rate cannot be deduced from observations during static contractions and that muscle fibre composition may play a minor role. In comparison to isometric muscle action models, little is known about the electromyographic (EMG) and mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) responses to fatiguing dynamic muscle actions. Simultaneous examination of the EMG and MMG amplitude and MPF may provide additional insight with regard to the motor control strategies utilized by the superficial muscles of the quadriceps femoris during a concentric fatiguing task. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the EMG and MMG amplitude and MPF responses of the vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), and vastus medialis (VM) during repeated, concentric muscle actions of the dominant leg. Seventeen adults (21.8+/-1.7 yr) performed 50 consecutive, maximal concentric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors on a Biodex System 3 Dynamometer at velocities of 60 degrees s(-1) and 300 degrees s(-1). Bipolar surface electrode arrangements were placed over the mid portion of the VL, RF, and VM muscles with a MMG contact sensor placed adjacent to the superior EMG electrode on each muscle. Torque, MMG and EMG amplitude and MPF values were calculated for each of the 50 repetitions. All values were normalized to the value recorded during the first repetition and then averaged across all subjects. The cubic decreases in torque at 60 degrees s(-1) (R2 = 0.972) and 300 degrees s(-1) (R2 = 0.931) was associated with a decline in torque of 59+/-24% and 53+/-11%, respectively. The muscle and velocity specific responses for the MMG amplitude and MPF demonstrated that each of the superficial muscles of the quadriceps femoris uniquely contributed to the control of force output across the 50 repetitions. These results suggested that the MMG responses for the VL, RF, VM during a fatiguing task may be influenced by a number of factors such as fiber type differences, alterations in activation strategy including motor unit recruitment and firing rate and possibly muscle wisdom.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of eccentric exercise on the ability to exert steady submaximal forces with muscles that cross the elbow joint. Eight subjects performed two tasks requiring isometric contraction of the right elbow flexors: a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and a constant-force task at four submaximal target forces (5, 20, 35, 50% MVC) while electromyography (EMG) was recorded from elbow flexor and extensor muscles. These tasks were performed before, after, and 24 h after a period of eccentric (fatigue and muscle damage) or concentric exercise (fatigue only). MVC force declined after eccentric exercise (45% decline) and remained depressed 24 h later (24%), whereas the reduced force after concentric exercise (22%) fully recovered the following day. EMG amplitude during the submaximal contractions increased in all elbow flexor muscles after eccentric exercise, with the greatest change in the biceps brachii at low forces (3-4 times larger at 5 and 20% MVC) and in the brachialis muscle at moderate forces (2 times larger at 35 and 50% MVC). Eccentric exercise resulted in a twofold increase in coactivation of the triceps brachii muscle during all submaximal contractions. Force fluctuations were larger after eccentric exercise, particularly at low forces (3-4 times larger at 5% MVC, 2 times larger at 50% MVC), with a twofold increase in physiological tremor at 8-12 Hz. These data indicate that eccentric exercise results in impaired motor control and altered neural drive to elbow flexor muscles, particularly at low forces, suggesting altered motor unit activation after eccentric exercise.  相似文献

Short term effects of 5 sets of 10 maximal eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors, performed using an isokinetic ergometer, were studied. Maximal eccentric, isometric, concentric torque, myoelectrical activity of biceps and triceps brachii, voluntary activation, M-wave amplitude, as well as twitch and maximal contraction and relaxation velocities were measured before (Control), 2 minutes after (Post), 24 hours (Post24 h) and 48 hours (Post48 h) after the exercise session. Torque significantly decreased over the recovery period, whatever the contraction type, excepted concentric torque assessed at 240 degrees.s-1 which recovered its Control value at Post48 h. Activation level significantly decreased at Post (p < 0.05) and returned to its Control value at Post24 h. Twitch, as well as maximal contraction and relaxation velocities had significantly declined among the experimental procedure (p < 0.01). M-wave amplitude was not modified after the exercise. These results indicate that, over a 48 hour rest period, torque decrement following a maximal eccentric exercise session should mainly be due to a failure of the peripheral part of the neuromuscular system, and force recovery should closely be linked to the developed force value.  相似文献

From August of 1995 through July of 1998, 38 free anterolateral thigh flaps were transferred to reconstruct soft-tissue defects. The overall success rate was 97 percent. Among 38 anterolateral thigh flaps, four were elevated as cutaneous flaps based on the septocutaneous perforators. The other 34 were harvested as myocutaneous flaps including a cuff of vastus lateralis muscle (15 to 40 cm3), either because of bulk requirements (33 cases) or because of the absence of a septocutaneous perforator (one case). However, vastus lateralis muscle is the largest compartment of the quadriceps, which is the prime extensor of the knee. Losing a portion of the vastus lateralis muscle may affect knee stability. Objective functional assessments of the donor sites were performed at least 6 months postoperatively in 20 patients who had a cuff of vastus lateralis muscle incorporated as part of the myocutaneous flap; assessments were made using a kinetic communicator machine. The isometric power test of the ratios of quadriceps muscle at 30 and 60 degrees of flexion between donor and normal thighs revealed no significant difference (p > 0.05). The isokinetic peak torque ratio of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, including concentric and eccentric contraction tests, showed no significant difference (p > 0.05), except the concentric contraction test of the quadriceps muscle, which revealed mild weakness of the donor thigh (p < 0.05). In summary, the functional impairment of the donor thighs was minimal after free anterolateral thigh myocutaneous flap transfer.  相似文献

Eccentric exercise often produces severe muscle damage, whereas concentric exercise of a similar load elicits a minor degree of muscle damage. The cellular events initiating muscle damage are thought to include an increase in cytosolic Ca. It was hypothesized that eccentric muscle activity in humans would lead to a larger degree of cell damage and increased intracellular Ca accumulation in skeletal muscle than concentric activity would. Furthermore, possible differences between men and women in muscle damage were investigated following step exercise. Thirty-three healthy subjects (18 men and 15 women) participated in a 30-minute step exercise protocol involving concentric contractions with 1 leg and eccentric contractions with the other leg. Muscle Ca content, maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and muscle enzymes in the plasma were measured. In a subgroup of the subjects, T2 relaxation time was measured by magnetic resonance imaging. No significant changes were found in muscle Ca content in vastus lateralis biopsy specimens in women or in men. Following step exercise, MVC decreased in both legs of both genders. The women had a significantly larger strength decrease in the eccentric leg than the men had on postexercise day 2 (p < 0.01). Plasma creatine kinase increased following step exercise, with a sevenfold higher response in women than in men on day 3 (p < 0.001). The women, but not the men, had an increase in T2 relaxation time in the eccentrically working adductor magnus muscle, peaking on day 3 (75%) (p < 0.001). In conclusion, step exercise does not lead to Ca accumulation in the vastus lateralis but does induce muscle damage preferentially in the eccentrically working muscles, considerably more in women than in men. This indicates that gender-specific step training programs may be warranted to avoid excessive muscle damage.  相似文献

This study analysed the changes in electromyographic (EMG) activity of the vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius muscles during incremental treadmill running. The changes in EMG were related to the lactate and ventilatory thresholds. Ten trained subjects participated in the study. Minute ventilation, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide expired and the fraction of oxygen in the expired gas were recorded continuously. Venous blood samples were collected at each exercise intensity and analysed for lactate concentration. The EMG were recorded at the end of each exercise intensity using surface electrodes. The EMG were quantified through integration (iEMG) and by calculating the mean power frequency (MPF). The iEMG measurements were characterized by a breakpoint in the vastus lateralis and/or gastrocnemius muscles in eight of the subjects tested. However, the results indicated that blood lactate concentrations had already begun to increase in a nonlinear fashion before the iEMG breakpoint had been surpassed. Consequently, the occurence of the lactate threshold cannot be attributed solely to the change in motor unit recruitment or rate coding patterns demonstrated by the iEMG breakpoint. The ventilatory threshold was shown to be a far more reliable and convenient noninvasive predictor of the lactate threshold in comparison with EMG techniques. In conclusion, the EMG measurements used in this study (i.e. iEMG and MPF) were not considered to be viable noninvasive determinants of the aerobic-anaerobic transition phase in treadmill running.

Eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage impairs muscle glycogen repletion   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Five healthy untrained young male subjects were studied before, immediately after, and 10 days after a 45-min bout of eccentric exercise on a cycle ergometer (201 W). The subjects were sedentary at all other times and consumed a eucaloric meat-free diet. Needle biopsies of the vastus lateralis muscle were examined for intracellular damage and glycogen content. Immediately after exercise, muscle samples showed myofibrillar tearing and edema. At 10 days, there was myofibrillar necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, and no evidence of myofibrillar regeneration. Glycogen utilization during the exercise bout was 33 mmol glycosyl units/kg muscle, consistent with the metabolic intensity of 44% of maximal O2 uptake; however, the significant glycogen use by type II fibers contrasted with concentric exercise performed at this intensity. At 10 days after exercise, muscle glycogen was still depleted, in both type I and II fibers. It is possible that the alterations in muscle ultrastructures were related to the lack of repletion of muscle glycogen. Damage produced by eccentric exercise was more persistent than previously reported, indicating that more than 10 days may be necessary for recovery of muscle ultrastructure and carbohydrate reserves.  相似文献

The influence of contraction type on the human ability to use the torque capacity of skeletal muscle during explosive efforts has not been documented. Fourteen male participants completed explosive voluntary contractions of the knee extensors in four separate conditions: concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC); and isometric at two knee angles (101°, ISO101 and 155°, ISO155). In each condition, torque was measured at 25 ms intervals up to 150 ms from torque onset, and then normalized to the maximum voluntary torque (MVT) specific to that joint angle and angular velocity. Explosive voluntary torque after 50 ms in each condition was also expressed as a percentage of torque generated after 50 ms during a supramaximal 300 Hz electrically evoked octet in the same condition. Explosive voluntary torque normalized to MVT was more than 60 per cent larger in CON than any other condition after the initial 25 ms. The percentage of evoked torque expressed after 50 ms of the explosive voluntary contractions was also greatest in CON (ANOVA; p < 0.001), suggesting higher concentric volitional activation. This was confirmed by greater agonist electromyography normalized to M(max) (recorded during the explosive voluntary contractions) in CON. These results provide novel evidence that the ability to use the muscle's torque capacity explosively is influenced by contraction type, with concentric contractions being more conducive to explosive performance due to a more effective neural strategy.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the training stimuli of eccentric (lengthening) and concentric (shortening) contractions regarding the effect on signaling enzymes involved in protein synthesis. Ten male subjects performed 4 x 6 maximal eccentric contractions on one leg followed by 4 x 6 maximal concentric contractions on the other. Six additional subjects performed the same protocol, but with maximal concentric and submaximal eccentric exercise of equal force to that of the maximal concentric contractions. Muscle biopsy samples were taken from the vastus lateralis before, immediately after, and 1 and 2 h after exercise in both legs. The average peak force produced during the maximal eccentric exercise was 31% higher than during the maximal concentric exercise, 2,490 (+/-100) vs. 1,894 (+/-108) N (P < 0.05). The maximal eccentric contractions led to two- to eightfold increases in the phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase (p70(S6k)) and the ribosomal protein S6 that persisted for 2 h into recovery but no significant changes in phosphorylation of Akt or mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Maximal concentric and submaximal eccentric contractions did not induce any significant changes in Akt, mTOR, p70(S6k), or S6 phosphorylation up to 2 h after the exercise. The results indicate that one session of maximal eccentric contractions activates p70(S6k) in human muscle via an Akt-independent pathway and suggest that maximal eccentric contractions are more effective than maximal concentric contractions in stimulating protein synthesis in the absence of a nutritional intake, an effect that may be mediated through a combination of greater tension and stretching of the muscle.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in mechanomyographic (MMG) intensity patterns for the vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF) and vastus medialis (VM) during submaximal to maximal concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic and isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors. Eleven men (mean ± SD age = 20.1 ± 1.1 years) performed concentric, eccentric and isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors on 3 separate days. Surface MMG signals were detected from the VL, RF and VM, processed with a wavelet analysis and examined with a trend plot. The results indicated that the trend plot was capable of tracking systematic changes in MMG amplitude and frequency with an increase in torque. However, these changes were statistically significant in only 26% of the cases. There were also no consistent differences between muscles or contraction types for the significance of the trend plots.  相似文献
