The ankle flexor and extensor muscles are essential for pedal movements associated with car driving. Neuromuscular activation of lower leg muscles is influenced by the posture during a given task, such as the flexed knee joint angle during car driving. This study aimed to investigate the influence of flexion of the knee joint on recruitment threshold-dependent motor unit activity in lower leg muscles during isometric contraction. Twenty healthy participants performed plantar flexor and dorsiflexor isometric ramp contractions at 30 % of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with extended (0°) and flexed (130°) knee joint angles. High-density surface electromyograms were recorded from medial gastrocnemius (MG), soleus (SOL), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles and decomposed to extract individual motor units. The torque-dependent change (Δpps /Δ%MVC) of the motor unit activity of MG (recruited at 15 %MVC) and SOL (recruited at 5 %MVC) muscles was higher with a flexed compared with an extended knee joint (p < 0.05). The torque-dependent change of TA MU did not different between the knee joint angles. The motor units within certain limited recruitment thresholds recruited to exert plantar flexion torque can be excited to compensate for the loss of MG muscle torque output with a flexed knee joint.  相似文献

One of the purposes of footwear is to assist locomotion, but some footwear types seem to restrict natural foot motion, which may affect the contribution of ankle plantar flexor muscles to propulsion. This study examined the effects of different footwear conditions on the activity of ankle plantar flexors during walking. Ten healthy habitually shod individuals walked overground in shoes, barefoot and in flip-flops while fine-wire electromyography (EMG) activity was recorded from flexor hallucis longus (FHL), soleus (SOL), and medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG) muscles. EMG signals were peak-normalised and analysed in the stance phase using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM). We found highly individual EMG patterns. Although walking with shoes required higher muscle activity for propulsion than walking barefoot or with flip-flops in most participants, this did not result in statistically significant differences in EMG amplitude between footwear conditions in any muscle (p > 0.05). Time to peak activity showed the lowest coefficient of variation in shod walking (3.5, 7.0, 8.0 and 3.4 for FHL, SOL, MG and LG, respectively). Future studies should clarify the sources and consequences of individual EMG responses to different footwear.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to quantitatively describe the relationships between joint angles and muscle architecture (lengths (Lf) and angles (Θf) of fascicles) of human triceps surae [medial (MG) and lateral (LG) gastrocnemius and soleus (SOL) muscles] in vivo for three men-cosmonaut after long-duration spaceflight. Sagittal sonographs of MG, LG, SOL were taken at ankle was positioned at 15° (dorsiflexion), 0° (neutral position), +15°, and +30° (plantarflexion), with the knee at 90° at rest and after a long-duration spaceflight. At each position, longitudinal ultrasonic images of the MG and LG and SOL were obtained while the cosmonauts was relaxed from which fascicle lengths and angles with respect to the aponeuroses were determined. After space flight plantarflexor force declined significantly (26%; p < 0.001). The internal architecture of the GM, and LG, and SOL muscle was significantly altered. In the passive condition, Lf changed from 45, 53, and 39 mm (knee, 0°, ankle, −15°) to 26, 33, and 28 mm (knee, 90° ankle, 30°) for MG, LG, and SOL, respectively. Different lengths and angles of fascicles, and their changes by contraction, might be related to differences in force-producing capabilities of the muscles and elastic characteristics of tendons and aponeuroses. The three heads of the triceps surae muscle substantially differ in architecture, which probably reflects their functional roles. Differences in fiber length and pennation angle that were observed among the muscles and could be associated with differences in force production and in elastic properties of musculo-tendinous complex and aponeuroses.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate whether fatigue-induced changes in synergistic muscle forces match their tendon elongation. The medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG) was fatigued by repeated electrical stimulation (1 min×5 times: interval 30 s, intensity: 20–30% of maximal voluntary plantar flexion torque) applied at the muscle belly under a partial occlusion of blood vessels. Before and after the MG fatigue task, ramp isometric contractions were performed voluntarily, during which tendon elongations were determined by ultrasonography, along with recordings of the surface EMG activities of MG, the soleus (SOL) and the lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscles. The tendon elongation of MG and SOL in post-fatigue ramp was similar, although evoked MG forces dropped nearly to zero. In addition, for a given torque output, the tendon elongation of SOL significantly decreased while that of LG did not, although the activation levels of both muscles had increased. Results suggest that the fatigue-induced changes in force of the triceps surae muscles do not match their tendon elongation. These results imply that the tendons of the triceps surae muscles are mechanically coupled even after selective fatigue of a single muscle.  相似文献

Synergistic behaviour of triceps surae muscles (medial gastrocnemius-MG, lateral gastrocnemius-LG, soleus-SOL) during sustained submaximal plantarflexions was investigated in this study. Six male subjects were asked to sustain an isometric plantar flexor effort to exhaustion at two different knee angles. Exhaustion was defined as the point when they could no longer maintain the required tension. The loads sustained at 0 and 120 degrees of knee flexion represented 50% and 36% of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) respectively. MVC was measured at 0 degree knee flexion. During the contractions, electromyograms (EMG) from the surface of the triceps surae muscles were recorded. Changes in the synergistic behaviour of the triceps surae were assessed via partial correlations of the average EMG (AEMG) between three muscle combinations; MG/LG, MG/SOL, LG/SOL, and correlation between SOL/MG + LG and MG/SOL + LG. The latter combinations were based on either common fibre type or innervation properties. Two types of synergisms were identified: trade-off and coactivation. Trade-off and coactivation synergies were defined by significant (p less than 0.05) positive and negative correlations respectively. Coactivation synergism was found to occur predominantly under conditions of high load or reduced length of the triceps surae, and increased with the duration of the contraction. Trade-off synergism was evident when the muscles were at their optimum length and the loads sustained were submaximum.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to detect the characteristics of center of pressure (COP) movement during tiptoe standing (TS) compared to quiet standing (QS). Eight healthy subjects were asked to perform QS and TS on a force platform. During standing, surface electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from the soleus (SOL), flexor hallucis brevis (FHB), medial gastrocnemius (MG), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles. The path length and rectangular area of the COP trajectory were significantly larger during TS than during QS. In contrast, irrespective of standing condition, the scaling coefficients in the short and long regions were above and below 0.5, respectively. The coherence spectrum between the COP and EMG from the SOL and FHB muscles was statistically significant during TS at frequencies up to 17 Hz, while that for the QS was only significant below 1 Hz. In conclusion, the control of COP movement during TS was similar to that during QS despite large COP fluctuations during TS. Our results suggest that unstable posture during TS is compensated for by the activities of the SOL and FHB muscles, which enhance postural control.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess H-reflex plasticity and activation pattern of the plantar flexors during a sustained contraction where voluntary EMG activity was controlled via an EMG biofeedback. Twelve healthy males (28.0 ± 4.8 yr) performed a sustained isometric plantar flexion while instructed to maintain summed EMG root mean square (RMS) of gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscles fixed at a target corresponding to 80% maximal voluntary contraction torque via an EMG biofeedback. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve was evoked during the contraction to obtain the maximal H-reflex amplitude to maximal M-wave amplitude ratio (Hsup/Msup ratio) from GL, GM and soleus (SOL) muscles. Neuromuscular function was also assessed before and immediately after exercise. Results showed a decrease in SOL activation during sustained flexion (from 65.5 ± 6.4% to 42.3 ± 3.8% maximal EMG, p < 0.001), whereas summed EMG RMS of GL and GM remained constant (59.7 ± 4.8% of maximal EMG on average). No significant change in the Hsup/Msup ratio was found for SOL, GL and GM muscles. Furthermore, it appears that the decrease in maximal voluntary contraction torque (?20.4 ± 2.9%, p < 0.001) was related to both neural and contractile impairment. Overall, these findings indicate that the balance between excitation and inhibition affecting the motoneuron pool remains constant during a sustained contraction where myoelectrical activity is controlled via an EMG biofeedback or let free to vary.  相似文献

Forces at different heights and orientations are often carried by hands while performing occupational tasks. Trunk muscle activity and spinal loads are likely dependent on not only moments but also the orientation and height of these forces. Here, we measured trunk kinematics and select superficial muscle activity of 12 asymptomatic subjects while supporting forces in hands in upright standing. Magnitude of forces in 5 orientations (−25°, 0°, 25°, 50° and 90°) and 2 heights (20 cm and 40 cm) were adjusted to generate flexion moments of 15, 30 and 45 N m at the L5-S1 disc centre. External forces were of much greater magnitude when applied at lower elevation or oriented upward at 25°. Spinal kinematics remained nearly unchanged in various tasks.Changes in orientation and elevation of external forces substantially influenced the recorded EMG, despite similar trunk posture and identical moments at the L5-S1. Greater EMG activity was overall recorded under larger forces albeit constant moment. Increases in the external moment at the L5-S1 substantially increased EMG in extensor muscles (p < 0.001) but had little effect on abdominals; e.g., mean longissimus EMG for all orientations increased by 38% and 75% as the moment level altered from 15 N m to 30 N m and to 45 N m while that in the rectus abdominus increased only by 2% and 4%, respectively. Under 45 N m moment and as the load orientation altered from 90° to 50°, 25°, 0° and −25°, mean EMG dropped by 3%, 12%, 12% and 1% in back muscles and by 17%, 17%, 19% and 13% in abdominals, respectively. As the load elevation increased from 20 cm to 40 cm, mean EMG under maximum moment decreased by 21% in back muscles and by 17% in abdominals.Due to the lack of EMG recording of deep lumbar muscles, changes in relative shear/compression components and different net moments at cranial discs despite identical moments at the caudal L5-S1 disc, complementary model studies are essential for a better comprehension of neuromuscular strategies in response to alterations in load height and orientation.  相似文献

Muscle activation, peak velocity (PV) and perceived technical difficulty while using three grip variations and three loads during a deadlift exercise (DL) were examined. Twenty-nine resistance-trained athletes (15 males, age: 22.2 ± 2.7 years; 14 females, age: 24.8 ± 7.0 years) performed the DL with 50%, 70% and 90% of their one repetition maximum (1RM) using hook grip (HG), mixed grip (MG) and double overhand (DOH) grip. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the brachialis (BS), brachioradialis (BR) and flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) was recorded. PV and perceived technical difficulty of each grip were also measured. Regardless of load and grip, females exhibited greater BS activation compared to males (p < 0.05; ES = 0.69) while males displayed greater BR activation, significant at 90% load (p < 0.01; ES = 1.01). MG elicited the least BR and FCU activation regardless of load and sex (p < 0.01; ES = 0.64–0.68) and was consistently ranked as the easiest grip for any load. Males achieved significantly greater PV than females at 50% and 70% (p < 0.01; ES = 1.72–1.92). Hand orientation did not significantly impact PV. A MG may be beneficial in reducing the overall perceived technical difficulty when performing a maximal DL. Athletes aiming to maximise muscle activation and potentially develop their grip strength should utilise a DOH grip or HG.  相似文献

The muscles of the triceps surae group are important for performance in most sports and in the performance of activities of daily life. In addition, hypertrophy and balance among these muscles are integral to success in bodybuilding. The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle utilization patterns of the 2 major muscles of the triceps surae group, the soleus (SOL) and gastrocnemius (lateral head = LG and medial head = MG), and the tibialis anterior (TA) as an antagonist muscle to the group. Their electromyographic (EMG) signals were compared during 50 constant external resistance contractions at a level established before the testing session. Eleven experienced subjects contributed data during plantar flexion at 3 different knee angles (90, 135, and 180 degrees ). Both root mean square amplitude and integrated signal analyses of the EMGs revealed that the MG produced significantly greater activity than either the SOL or TA at 180 degrees, whereas the LG was not different from the SOL at any knee angle measured. Data also revealed that the SOL produced less electrical activity at 180 degrees than at the other knee angles, whereas the MG produced greater electrical activity. As would be expected, the TA produced lower EMG values than any of the triceps surae muscles at all angles tested. These data indicate that selective targeting of the SOL and MG is possible through the manipulation of knee angle. This targeting appears to be controlled by the biarticular and monoarticular structures of the MG and SOL, respectively. The LG appears less affected by knee position than the MG. Results suggest that the SOL can be targeted most effectively with the knee flexed at 90 degrees and the MG with the leg fully extended. The LG appears to also be more active at 180 degrees; however, it is not as affected as the MG or SOL by knee angle.  相似文献

Walking is a motor task requiring coordination of many muscles. Previous biomechanical studies, based primarily on analyses of the net ankle moment during stance, have concluded different functional roles for the plantar flexors. We hypothesize that some of the disparities in interpretation arise because of the effects of the uniarticular and biarticular muscles that comprise the plantar flexor group have not been separated. Furthermore, we believe that an accurate determination of muscle function requires quantification of the contributions of individual plantar flexor muscles to the energetics of individual body segments. In this study, we examined the individual contributions of the ankle plantar flexors (gastrocnemius (GAS); soleus (SOL)) to the body segment energetics using a musculoskeletal model and optimization framework to generate a forward dynamics simulation of normal walking at 1.5 m/s. At any instant in the gait cycle, the contribution of a muscle to support and forward progression was defined by its contribution to trunk vertical and horizontal acceleration, respectively, and its contribution to swing initiation by the mechanical energy it delivers to the leg in pre-swing (i.e., double-leg stance prior to toe-off). GAS and SOL were both found to provide trunk support during single-leg stance and pre-swing. In early single-leg stance, undergoing eccentric and isometric activity, they accelerate the trunk vertically but decelerate forward trunk progression. In mid single-leg stance, while isometric, GAS delivers energy to the leg while SOL decelerates it, and SOL delivers energy to the trunk while GAS decelerates it. In late single-leg stance through pre-swing, though GAS and SOL both undergo concentric activity and accelerate the trunk forward while decelerating the downward motion of the trunk (i.e., providing forward progression and support), they execute different energetic functions. The energy produced from SOL accelerates the trunk forward, whereas GAS delivers almost all its energy to accelerate the leg to initiate swing. Although GAS and SOL maintain or accelerate forward motion in mid single-leg stance through pre-swing, other muscles acting at the beginning of stance contribute comparably to forward progression. In summary, throughout single-leg stance both SOL and GAS provide vertical support, in mid single-leg stance SOL and GAS have opposite energetic effects on the leg and trunk to ensure support and forward progression of both the leg and trunk, and in pre-swing only GAS contributes to swing initiation.  相似文献

The purpose ofthis study was to investigate the functional interrelationship betweensynergistic muscle activities during low-level fatiguing contractions.Six human subjects performed static and dynamic contractions at anankle joint angle of 110° plantar flexion and within the range of90-110° (anatomic position = 90°) under constant load(10% maximal voluntary contraction) for 210 min. Surfaceelectromyogram records from lateral gastrocnemius (LG), medialgastrocnemius (MG), and soleus (Sol) muscles showed high and silentactivities alternately in the three muscles and a complementary andalternate activity between muscles in the time course. In the secondhalf of all exercise times, the number of changes in activity increasedsignificantly (P < 0.05) in each muscle. The ratios of active to silent periods of electromyogram activity were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in MG (4.5 ± 2.2) and Sol (4.3 ± 2.8) than in the LG(0.4 ± 0.1), but no significant differences were observed betweenMG and Sol. These results suggest that the relativeactivation of synergistic motor pools are not constant during alow-level fatiguing task.

Prior to implementing a normalisation method, the standardisation and reliability of the method needs to be examined. This investigation aimed to assess the reliability of EMG amplitudes and test outputs from proposed normalisation methods for the triceps surae. Sixteen participants completed isometric (maximum and sub-maximum); isokinetic (1.05 rad/s, 1.31 rad/s and 1.83 rad/s) squat jump and 20 m sprint conditions, on 3 separate occasions over 1 week. The EMG data was collected from the medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG) and soleus (SOL). Log transformed typical error measurements (TEMCV%) assessed EMG signal and test output reliability across the three sessions. Only the squat jump provided acceptable EMG reliability for all muscles both between days (SOL: 13%; MG: 14.5%; LG: 11.8%) and between weeks (SOL: 14.5%; MG: 12.9%; LG: 8.9%), with the sprint only showing poor reliability in the LG between days (16.3%). Acceptable reliability for the isometric and isokinetic conditions were muscle and re-test period dependant. Reliable output was found for the squat jump (4.1% and 3.6%), sprint (0.8% and 0.6%) and 1RM plantar flexion test (2.8% and 3.5%) between days and weeks, respectively. Isokinetic plantar flexion displayed poor reliability at all velocities between days and weeks. It was concluded that the squat jump provides a standardised and reproducible reference EMG value for the triceps surae for use as a normalisation method.  相似文献

Following active muscle lengthening, steady-state isometric force is elevated compared with an isometric contraction without prior lengthening for the same muscle length and activation level. This property of muscle contraction is known as residual force enhancement (RFE). Here, we aimed to determine whether neural factors may mask some of the mechanical benefits of RFE on plantar flexion torque production. Inherent to lengthening contractions is an increase in cortical and spinal-mediated inhibition, while knee flexion places the medial gastrocnemius at a neuromechanical disadvantage. Neuromuscular properties of the plantar flexors were investigated with a Humac Norm dynamometer in 10 males (∼27 years) with a flexed (90°) and extended (180°) knee and with or without calcaneal tendon vibration (frequency range: 80–110 Hz). There was no effect for vibration (p > 0.05), but there was an effect for knee angle (p < 0.05) such that there was a 2 fold increase in RFE with the knee flexed compared with extended. During submaximal torque matching, following active lengthening there was an activation reduction (electromyography; EMG) of 7.2 and 4.7% with the knee flexed and extended, respectively for soleus as compared with the reference isometric contraction, but no difference for the medial gastrocnemius. Despite attempting to excite Ia input onto the plantar flexor motor neuron pool, vibration had no influence on RFE. Surprisingly, RFE was elevated more for the knee flexed than extended, which was possibly owing to the activation differences across the disparate muscles of the triceps surae during the plantar flexion task.  相似文献

Although the orientations of the hand and forearm vary for different wrist rehabilitation protocols, their effect on muscle forces has not been quantified. Physiologic simulators enable a biomechanical evaluation of the joint by recreating functional motions in cadaveric specimens. Control strategies used to actuate joints in physiologic simulators usually employ position or force feedback alone to achieve optimum load distribution across the muscles. After successful tests on a phantom limb, unique combinations of position and force feedback – hybrid control and cascade control – were used to simulate multiple cyclic wrist motions of flexion-extension, radioulnar deviation, dart thrower’s motion, and circumduction using six muscles in ten cadaveric specimens. Low kinematic errors and coefficients of variation of muscle forces were observed for planar and complex wrist motions using both novel control strategies. The effect of gravity was most pronounced when the hand was in the horizontal orientation, resulting in higher extensor forces (p < 0.017) and higher out-of-plane kinematic errors (p < 0.007), as compared to the vertically upward or downward orientations. Muscle forces were also affected by the direction of rotation during circumduction. The peak force of flexor carpi radialis was higher in clockwise circumduction (p = 0.017), while that of flexor carpi ulnaris was higher in anticlockwise circumduction (p = 0.013). Thus, the physiologic wrist simulator accurately replicated cyclic planar and complex motions in cadaveric specimens. Moreover, the dependence of muscle forces on the hand orientation and the direction of circumduction could be vital in the specification of such parameters during wrist rehabilitation.  相似文献

Changes in fascicle length and tension of the soleus (SOL) muscle have been observed in humans using B-mode ultrasound to examine the knee from different angles. An alternative technique of assessing muscle and tendon stiffness is myometry, which is non-invasive, accessible, and easy to use. This study aimed to estimate the compressive stiffness of the distal SOL and Achilles tendon (AT) using myometry in various knee and ankle joint positions. Twenty-six healthy young males were recruited. The Myoton-PRO device was used to measure the compressive stiffness of the distal SOL and AT in the dominant leg. The knee was measured in two positions (90° of flexion and 0° of flexion) and the ankle joint in three positions (10° of dorsiflexion, neutral position, and 30° of plantar flexion) in random order. A three-way repeated-measures ANOVA test was performed. Significant interactions were found for structure × ankle position, structure × knee position, and structure × ankle position × knee position (p < 0.05). The AT and SOL showed significant increases in compressive stiffness with knee extension over knee flexion for all tested ankle positions (p < 0.05). Changes in stiffness relating to knee positioning were larger in the SOL than in the AT (p < 0.05). These results indicate that knee extension increases the compressive stiffness of the distal SOL and AT under various ankle joint positions, with a greater degree of change observed for the SOL. This study highlights the relevance of knee position in passive stiffness of the SOL and AT.  相似文献

To examine the muscle synergies of multi-directional postural control, we calculated the target-directed variance fraction (η) and net action direction of each muscle using the electromyogram-weighted averaging (EWA) method. Subjects stood barefoot on a force platform and maintained their posture by producing a center of pressure (COP) in twelve target directions. Surface electromyograms were recorded from 6 right-sided muscles: tibialis anterior (TA), soleus (SOL), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), medial gastrocnemius (MG), fibularis longus (FL), and gluteus medius (GM). η was calculated from COP with duration of 20-s, during which the COP was relatively constant. The EWA method was applied to the EMG and the two COP components to estimate the net action direction of each muscle. The results showed that η values in all directions did not cross the 0.8 threshold. This suggests that human postural control is achieved by synergistic co-activation. The EWA revealed that the net action directions of TA, SOL, LG, MG, and GM were 277.6°, 71.1°, 87.7°, 94.0°, and 2.2°, respectively. This suggests that postural maintenance by muscle synergy can be attributed to the relevant muscles having various action directions. These results demonstrate that muscle synergies can be investigated using COP fluctuations.  相似文献

In humans, an inhibitory via Ia afferent pathway from the medial gastrocnemius (MG) to the soleus (SOL) motoneuron pool has been suggested. Herein, we examined the relation between MG fascicle length changes and the SOL H-reflex modulation during passive knee movement. Twelve subjects performed static and passive (5° s?1) knee movement tasks with the ankle immobilized using an isokinetic dynamometer in sitting posture. The maximal H- and M-waves were measured at four target angles (20°, 40°, 60°, and 80° flexion from full knee extension). The MG fascicles length and velocity were measured using a B-mode ultrasonic apparatus. Results demonstrated that the SOL Hmax/Mmax; i.e., ratio of the maximal H- to M-waves, was attenuated with increasing MG fascicle length in static tasks. The SOL Hmax/Mmax at 20° was significantly attenuated compared with 60° and 80° with increasing MG fascicle length and lengthening velocity in passive knee extension. However, no significant differences in the SOL Hmax/Mmax were found across the target angles in the passive knee flexion task. In conclusion, as muscle spindles increase their discharge with lengthening fascicle velocity, but keep silent when fascicles shorten, our data suggest that lengthening the MG facilitates an inhibitory Ia pathway from MG to SOL, and modulates SOL motoneuron activity during movements.  相似文献

Architecturalproperties of the triceps surae muscles were determined in vivo for sixmen. The ankle was positioned at 15° dorsiflexion (15°)and 0, 15, and 30° plantar flexion, with the knee set at 0, 45, and90°. At each position, longitudinal ultrasonic images of the medial(MG) and lateral (LG) gastrocnemius and soleus (Sol) muscles wereobtained while the subject was relaxed (passive) and performed maximalisometric plantar flexion (active), from which fascicle lengths andangles with respect to the aponeuroses were determined. In the passivecondition, fascicle lengths changed from 59, 65, and 43 mm (knee,0°; ankle, 15°) to 32, 41, and 30 mm (knee, 90°ankle, 30°) for MG, LG, and Sol, respectively. Fascicle shorteningby contraction was more pronounced at longer fascicle lengths. MG hadgreatest fascicle angles, ranging from 22 to 67°, and was in a verydisadvantageous condition when the knee was flexed at 90°,irrespective of ankle positions. Different lengths and angles offascicles, and their changes by contraction, might be related todifferences in force-producing capabilities of the muscles and elasticcharacteristics of tendons and aponeuroses.

In rats,combinations of plantar flexor muscles representing ~20, 40, 60, and80% of the mass of the total plantar flexor group were transferredorthotopically in the absence of synergistic muscles and allowed torecover for 120 days. We hypothesized that, compared with theirindividual control values for structural and functional variables, thetransfers would display a hierarchical array of deficits, proportionalto their initial mass and, consequently, inversely proportional to therelative load on the transfers. Surprisingly, compared with theirindividual control values, each muscle transfer displayed deficits of30-40% in muscle mass, total fiber cross-sectional area, andmaximum isometric force, with the exception of the smallest transfer,the plantaris (PLN) muscle, which recovered 100% of its control valuefor each of these variables. Therefore, except for the PLN transfer,the muscle transfers studied displayed deficits similar in magnitude tothose reported for muscles transferred in the presence of synergisticmuscles. The greater recovery of the PLN transfer was attributed to therelatively large requirement for force production imposed on thistransfer due to the average force requirements of the total plantarflexor group.
