Habitat assessment by parasitoids: mechanisms for patch use behavior   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Animals foraging for patchily distributed resources may optimizetheir foraging decisions concerning the patches they encounter, provided that they base these decisions on reliable informationabout the profitability of the habitat as a whole. Females ofthe parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes exploit aphid hosts, which typically aggregate in discrete colonies. We show herehow between-colony travel time and the number of aphids in previouslyvisited colonies affect parasitoid foraging behavior. We firstassumed that parasitoids use travel time and previous colonysize to estimate a mean rate of fitness gain in the habitatand derived quantitative predictions concerning the effect ofthese two variables on patch residence time and patch-leavingrate of attack. We then tested these theoretical predictionsin laboratory experiments in which female parasitoids were allowedto visit two successive colonies. As predicted, the observedresidence time in the second colony increased with increasingtravel time and decreasing size of the first colony. Patch-leavingrate of attack decreased with increasing travel time but wasnot affected by previous colony size. These results suggestthat parasitoids use these two variables to assess habitat quality. However, discrepancies between the data obtained and quantitativepredictions show that the effect of travel time on patch usemay be more complex than assumed in our model.  相似文献

Learning animals are predicted to use a flexible patch-leaving threshold (PLT) while foraging in a depletable environment under exploitative competition. This prediction was tested in flock-feeding Bewick's swans ( Cygnus columbianus bewickii ) depleting hidden tubers of fennel pondweed ( Potamogeton pectinatus ) in a two-dimensional, continuous environment. The swans' patch residence time was measured by combining recordings of the foraging behaviour and movement paths. The tuber biomass density was measured before and after the period of exploitation, using the presumable foraging window of the swans as the scale of measurement. Swan foraging was simulated in order to predict the effects of flexible and fixed PLTs, respectively, on the patch residence time and the spatial heterogeneity of the tuber biomass density. Flexible PLTs were predicted to lead to short and decreasing patch residence times and a decrease in the coefficient of variation in tuber biomass densities, whereas the reverse was generally the case for fixed PLTs. Observed patch residence times did not decrease with time and were intermediate between those predicted for swans with flexible and fixed PLTs. Furthermore, an increase of the coefficient of variation in the tuber biomass density was observed. Given the observed giving-up biomass densities the most likely model was one with swans with a fixed rather than a flexible PLT. These results point at factors that may affect the spacing behaviour or constrain the use of a flexible PLT in swans.  相似文献

Abstract. Plant community structure in four dune slacks is examined for evidence of competition, expressed as local constraint on species biomass. Such constraint would result in a low variance in total quadrat biomass, compared to a null model. A method of analysis is introduced, using a patchbased null model, which is intended to discount most of the effects of environmental heterogeneity. The method is applied to data in which previous methods had failed to find such structure. There was significant biomass constraint (i.e. low variance in biomass) examining total plant-community biomass in Site 1, and there was a trend in this direction also in Site 2. When guilds defined on morphology were examined, significant biomass constraint was found for the Rhizomatous guild in Site 2. There was a trend to low variance for this guild also in Site 4, but it was significant only in a one-tailed test. After a consideration of other mechanisms, it is concluded that the most likely explanation for this biomass constraint is interspecies competition. Site 2, which showed the strongest evidence of biomass constraint in the present analyses, was also the site that demonstrated a significant deficit of variance in richness in earlier work, and was the most species-rich of the four sites and the least disturbed. The advantages of the new method, for obtaining evidence on competition, are discussed in comparison to pot experiments and field-perturbation experiments. We conclude that community structure can be seen in the pattern of species biomasses provided that a suitable method of analysis is used, i.e. examining small-scale effects and excluding the effects of environmental heterogeneity. In some cases such effects can be related to guild membership. We hypothesise that constraint on biomass is likely to be stronger in more species-rich and less disturbed communities.  相似文献

The foraging behaviour of Australian honeyeaters is reviewed in terms of diet, foraging selectivity, foraging flight mode, quality and quantity of nectar encountered per flower, flower densities encountered and effect of predation. At the same time comparisons are made between honeyeaters and hummingbirds. These two groups of birds are superficially similar. Both feed on nectar and insects. Both tend to have long curved bills and tongues adapted for removal of nectar from flowers. Both tend to feed at long, red flowers. However, on close inspection, honeyeaters and hummingbirds are quite dissimilar. For example, many honeyeaters include fruit in their diets. Hummingbirds almost never eat fruit. Honeyeaters appear to be considerably less nectarivorous and more insectivorous than hummingbirds. Honeyeaters are, for the most part, larger than hummingbirds and they usually perch while feeding whereas hummingbirds usually hover. Honeyeaters but not hummingbirds often flock while feeding. Predation appears to be considerably more important for honeyeaters than for hummingbirds. Territorial defense of flowers seems common in hummingbirds but uncommon in honeyeaters. These differences are discussed in detail and explanations are offered for them wherever possible.  相似文献

The huge biodiversity found in Mesoamerica is often explained by its geographic situation as a natural bridge between two large biogeographic regions. Often overlooked, however, are the high levels of speciation and diversification in the area. Here we assess the phylogenetic relationships within a Mesoamerican group of hummingbirds (Lampornis). We sequenced both mtDNA (1,143 bp of cyt b and 727 bp of ND5) and nuclear genes (505 bp of AK-5 intron and 567 bp of c-mos) for each of the seven recognised species and outgroups. We find two or three clades of similar age within this genus: L. clemenciae and L. amethystinus (singly or as each other's sister taxa) and a Central American clade. This Central-American clade presents a clear bipartition between northern (L. viridipallens and L. sybillae) and southern Mesoamerica, which is shared with many other Mesoamerican organisms. Our analyses suggest that L. hemileucus does not belong in the genus Lampornis. While we refrain to apply a time-scale to our data because of the lack of an appropriate calibration, our results indicate that the genus Lampornis predates the uprising of the Panama land-bridge, and that diversification among the isthmian species (L. castaneoventris and L. calolaema) is a very recent event. Our results strongly suggest a local Mesoamerican origin for this genus.  相似文献

The accurate and valid measurement of personal exposure to magnetic fields poses a major challenge for epidemiologic studies. When considering the various methods to assess exposure, it is unclear which measures are most relevant for studies of human disease, if any. Given these uncertainties, the Electromagnetic Fields and Breast Cancer on Long Island Study (EBCLIS) undertook a pilot study to develop the data collection protocol for a case-control study of breast cancer and magnetic fields. The pilot study used and compared various methods to assess residential exposures to magnetic fields, and related these measures to personal exposures. It included 31 women without breast cancer (mean age, 63+/-7 yr) who lived in their present homes for at least 15 yr. The pilot study consisted of an in-home interview, spot and 24-h magnetic field waveforms and broadband recordings, ground currents, wire coding, and personal 24-h broadband measurements. From the regression analyses, the model that best predicted personal magnetic field exposures included 24-h measurements in the bedroom and in the most lived-in room; as well as ground current test loads taken at the center of this most lived in room (r(2)=86%). The addition of other variables in this regression model yielded only small and nonsignificant increases in r(2). As a direct result of this pilot, EBCLIS will include ground current measurements in its protocol, which have not previously been collected as part of an epidemiologic study. Ground currents may be important because they may be richer in 180 Hz components than are the other currents in a power system. EBCLIS will have the opportunity to examine the ground-current hypothesis in the context of female breast cancer.  相似文献

Summary Pollen dispersal by male and female Heliconius butterflies and hermit hummingbirds was examined in a natural population of the tropical vine Psiguria warscewiczii. Fluorescent dyes were used to track flowers visited by individual pollinators. Mean distance of pollen dispersal was significantly higher by males than by female Heliconius. Butterflies dispersed pollen greater distances than did hummingbirds. There were no significant differences in dispersal distance among species of Heliconius. The number of flowers or plants to which dye was dispersed was greater for Heliconius than for hummingbirds. The home range behavior and site specificity exhibited by Heliconius, together with the preference by most Heliconius species in the study site for Psiguria led us to examine the relationship between the butterflies' home range and its daily foraging among Psiguria. A Heliconius mark-recapture program was conducted simultaneously with the dye program. This study showed that individual butterflies, for which extensive recaptures were made, visited an area of Psiguria plants on any one day that corresponded to the area in which those butterflies were caught or observed. The area over which a butterfly moved was termed its home range; within home ranges relative movement by butterflies was estimated as the mean distance between sequential captures. This estimate differed significantly among species of Heliconius; males of all species moving greater distances than females.  相似文献

Temperature and diet quality are two of the most important factors affecting the dynamic regulation of animal energy budgets. Because hummingbirds are very sensitive to energy stress, we used Green-backed Firecrowns (Sephanoides sephaniodes) to test the dynamics of their energy budget under different energetic challenges in chronic conditions (20 days). Experimental groups were: HQ-TNZ (high quality diet and thermoneutrality), HQ-LT (high quality diet and low temperature), LQ-TNZ (low quality diet and thermoneutrality), and LQ-LT (low quality diet and low temperature). Analysis of behavioral, morphological, and physiological variables revealed that thermal and dietary factors affect time and energy budgets independently. Hummingbirds increased energy intake during the first day of acclimation at LT, but after second day, the LQ-LT group did not maintain their energy intake and began to loose body mass. Moreover, diet quality affected digestive organs. The intestine, gizzard, liver and kidneys all increased in size when food quality was lowest, probably to obtain more food per feeding event and to more efficiently process the ingested food. Exposure to low ambient temperatures affected the most metabolically productive organs such as the heart, lungs, and muscular mass. Lower temperature increased basal and daily energy expenditure, and changed the time budget. Sephanoides sephaniodes spent more time perching when their energy balance was close to be negative. We suggest that energy budget regulation in hummingbirds does not reside exclusively in the energy output nor in the energy-input but in both pathways.  相似文献

The Patch Dynamics Concept predicts different recovery patterns of communities after disturbance according to the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the habitat. The aim of this study was to test the predictions arising from the Patch Dynamics Concept on the recovery of macrophyte communities after an experimental disturbance. The test was based on the comparison of the vegetation recovery in three stations located on former channels of the Rhône River, France, differing by their temporal heterogeneity, which was estimated by the frequency of flood scouring. In each station the experimental disturbance was set up by uprooting the aquatic plants in three experimental sets comprising four 1 m2-plots. The aquatic plants were surveyed in these sets as well as in their reference sets from July to November 1991.As predicted, the most frequently disturbed station recovered its species richness (19 species) and its vegetation cover in less than two months. The biological traits of the species occurring in this station are considered as r-strategies. The species colonizing the experimental sets were not necessarily present on the sets before the disturbance, but occurred regularly on other sites station. The rapidity of the community recovery demonstrates the high resilience of this ecosystem. According to the unpredictable character of its recolonization, the macrophyte community of this station could be said to be founder controlled with competitive lottery for establishment. The station with intermediate temporal heterogeneity was overgrown by some r-selected species but the community recolonization was predictable and this station had intermediate resilience. Its species richness was low (6 species). The less frequently disturbed station presented low resilience with a slow recovery of its community (more than 5 months); the species richness (4 species) and the traits of some species were related to K-strategies while others were related to r-strategies. The macrophyte community of this station could be said to be dominance controlled.Different patterns of recovery of the macrophyte communities of former channels of the Rhône River could be depicted according to their temporal heterogeneity; these patterns were consistent with the hypotheses arising from the Patch Dynamics Concept. However, the competitive lottery appeared to be limited at the scale of our experiment.

Abstract.  1. Dynamic models of optimal foraging predict that an animal's decision to accept or reject a patch depends not only on the environment and patch quality, but also on its internal state. Previous experiments have shown that the two-spot ladybird beetle, Adalia bipunctata (L.), is reluctant to lay eggs in a patch of prey contaminated by the oviposition-deterring pheromone produced by conspecific larvae.
2. An experiment was conducted to test whether the internal state of an A. bipunctata female affects its oviposition response to oviposition-deterring pheromone. Firstly, the oviposition response to oviposition-deterring pheromone of young and old females was compared. Secondly, the oviposition response to oviposition-deterring pheromone of females previously exposed continuously to oviposition-deterring pheromone was compared with that of females of the same age but with no previous experience of oviposition-deterring pheromone.
3. Old females and females with previous experience of oviposition-deterring pheromone were less reluctant to lay eggs in the presence of oviposition-deterring pheromone than young and naive females. These results are consistent with the predictions of optimal foraging theory.  相似文献

Voice-quality (i.e., nasality) judgments are commonly used to evaluate the results of pharyngeal flap surgery. However, these are subjective judgments of questionable validity and reliability. This project was designed to systematically evaluate the outcome of pharyngeal flap surgery utilizing objective, quantifiable physiologic (pressure-flow) information. Thirty-one patients who had undergone pharyngeal flap surgery were selected. Pressure-flow measurements and perceptual judgments of speech were obtained following surgery. Results indicated that using pressure-flow criteria, only 52 percent of the outcomes were considered successful. Results also indicated that 35 percent of the cases were characterized by substantial nasopharyngeal airway obstruction. In the present study, these findings, along with the related perceptual phenomenon of denasality, were considered unsuccessful. Finally, results suggest that aerodynamic measurements can be used to assess other surgical techniques designed to correct velopharyngeal insufficiency.  相似文献

The spectacular evolutionary radiation of hummingbirds (Trochilidae) has served as a model system for many biological studies. To begin to provide a historical context for these investigations, we generated a complete matrix of DNA hybridization distances among 26 hummingbirds and an outgroup swift (Chaetura pelagica) to determine the principal hummingbird lineages. FITCH topologies estimated from symmetrized delta TmH-C values and subjected to various validation methods (bootstrapping, weighted jackknifing, branch length significance) indicated a fundamental split between hermit (Eutoxeres aquila, Threnetes ruckeri; Phaethornithinae) and nonhermit (Trochilinae) hummingbirds, and provided strong support for six principal nonhermit clades with the following branching order: (1) a predominantly lowland group comprising caribs (Eulampis holosericeus) and relatives (Androdon aequatorialis and Heliothryx barroti) with violet-ears (Colibri coruscans) and relatives (Doryfera ludovicae); (2) an Andean-associated clade of highly polytypic taxa (Eriocnemis, Heliodoxa, and Coeligena); (3) a second endemic Andean clade (Oreotrochilus chimborazo, Aglaiocercus coelestis, and Lesbia victoriae) paired with thorntails (Popelairia conversii); (4) emeralds and relatives (Chlorostilbon mellisugus, Amazilia tzacatl, Thalurania colombica, Orthorhyncus cristatus and Campylopterus villaviscensio); (5) mountain-gems (Lampornis clemenciae and Eugenes fulgens); and (6) tiny bee-like forms (Archilochus colubris, Myrtis fanny, Acestrura mulsant, and Philodice mitchellii). Corresponding analyses on a matrix of unsymmetrized delta values gave similar support for these relationships except that the branching order of the two Andean clades (2, 3 above) was unresolved. In general, subsidiary relationships were consistent and well supported by both matrices, sometimes revealing surprising associations between forms that differ dramatically in plumage and bill morphology. Our results also reveal some basic aspects of hummingbird ecologic and morphologic evolution. For example, most of the diverse endemic Andean assemblage apparently comprises two genetically divergent clades, whereas the majority of North American hummingbirds belong a single third clade. Genetic distances separating some morphologically distinct genera (Oreotrochilus, Aglaiocercus, Lesbia; Myrtis, Acestrura, Philodice) were no greater than among congeneric (Coeligena) species, indicating that, in hummingbirds, morphological divergence does not necessarily reflect level of genetic divergence.   相似文献

Flowerpiercers are the most specialized nectar-feeding passerines in the Neotropics. They are nectar robbers that feed on the sucrose-rich diet of hummingbirds. To test the hypothesis that flowerpiercers have converged with hummingbirds in digestive traits, we compared the activity of intestinal enzymes and the gut nominal area of cinnamon-bellied flowerpiercers (Diglossa baritula) with those of eleven hummingbird species. We measured sucrase, maltase, and aminopeptidase-N activities. To provide a comparative context, we also compared flowerpiercers and hummingbirds with 29 species of passerines. We analyzed enzyme activity using both standard allometric analyses and phylogenetically independent contrasts. Both approaches revealed the same patterns. With the exception of sucrase activity, hummingbirds digestive traits were indistinguishable from those of passerines. Sucrase activity was ten times higher in hummingbirds than in passerines. Hummingbirds and passerines also differed in the relationship between intestinal maltase and sucrase activities. Maltase activity was two times higher per unit of sucrase activity in passerines than in hummingbirds. The sucrase activity of D. baritula was much lower than that of hummingbirds, and not unlike that expected for a passerine of its body mass. With the exception of aminopeptidase-N activity, the digestive traits of D. baritula were not different from those of other passerines.Abbreviations Km Michaelis-Menten constant - PDAP phenotypic diversity analysis program - PIC phylogenetic independent contrast - Vmax maximal reaction velocityCommunicated by G. Studies of the role of flight in vertebrate evolution often have focused on the propatagial muscle complex because this structure forms the wing's leading edge. However, historical narratives about the evolution of flight anatomy are compromised because traditional higher-level taxonomies typically are based in part on the propatagium itself. To avoid this circularity, I used a consensus molecular phylogeny to examine propatagial evolution in the highly aerial sister groups, hummingbirds and swifts (Apodiformes). Mapping of anatomy on molecular-based phylogeny indicates that structural variation in M .  tensor propatagialis pars brevis (TPB) is congruent with the major subclades of both hummingbirds and swifts. However, the humeral tendon and broad attachment of the fleshy belly of TPB with M .  extensor metacarpi radialis (EMR) most likely underwent parallel change in hummingbirds and swifts, while the distal tendon present only in hummingbirds changed from a thin sheet to a strong tendon. The combination of divergent (within hummingbirds or swifts) and parallel (between hummingbirds and swifts) evolutionary patterns implies that the taxonomic value of the propatagial complex in apodiformes depends on anatomical component and level of divergence. The congruence of anatomy with molecular phylogeny provides independent criteria for designating relatively ancestral versus derived clades of apodiformes. Based on these polarities, living hummingbirds and swifts express additional parallel trends from arboreal to more aerial foraging styles, and from depauperate to species-rich clades. Within apodiformes, the link of flight anatomy with taxonomic and ecologic diversity suggests that elaboration of locomotor modes was important for apodiform diversification, echoing a similar pattern for birds relative to their reptilian ancestors.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 211–219.  相似文献
