Inadequate minerals intake, as well as disruption of some metabolic processes in which microelements are cofactors, are suggested to lead to the development of hypertension. The role of minerals in the pathogenesis of hypertension still remains to be explained. In the present study, we sought to determine associations between serum and hair mineral concentrations and serum lipids and glucose levels. Forty obese hypertensive subjects with insulin resistance and 40 healthy volunteers were recruited in the study. Blood pressure, BMI, and insulin resistance were recorded in all subjects. Levels of lipids, glucose, sodium and potassium, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and calcium were assessed in serum. Iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, and calcium were assessed in hair. Dietary intake of the analyzed minerals was estimated. We found distinctly higher concentrations of serum iron and serum and hair calcium as well as markedly lower levels of hair zinc in the hypertensive subjects. The study group manifested also significantly lower daily intake of calcium, magnesium, and iron. We observed a relationship between the concentrations of iron, zinc, and copper in serum and hair and high and low range of cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose serum levels in the studied patients. Moreover, this study demonstrated significant correlation between serum and hair concentrations of selected minerals and their dietary intake and levels of serum lipids and glucose and blood pressure in the study and the control groups. The obtained results seem to indicate the association between lipid and glucose metabolism and iron, copper, zinc, and calcium concentrations in blood and hair of hypertensive and obese patients with insulin resistance.  相似文献

The relationship of copper and zinc status with blood pressure in young adults was studied (N=59). Copper and zinc status was assessed through analysis of serum, urine, hair, and diet records. Males (N=27) had greater systolic and pulse pressures than females (N=32). Multiple regression analysis suggested that males and higher caloric and dietary copper intakes were the predominant factors associated with higher systolic and diastolic pressures, whereas higher dietary zinc intakes were associated with lower pressures. Higher urine zinc excretion rates and serum zinc concentrations were associated with higher diastolic pressures. The sex variable was the strongest factor affecting pulse pressures, with males having higher pulse pressures. Serum zinc concentrations had an inverse relationship to pulse pressures. The data suggest that the weight/height index and age had a low association with blood pressure in this normotensive sample.  相似文献

Effects of either a single dose or a long-term administration of an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, acarbose, on blood glucose, cholesterol concentrations in serum lipoprotein fractions, triglycerides and free fatty acids were examined in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In experiment 1, starch loading tests were performed with or without adding acarbose. The addition of acarbose (0.75 mg per kg of body weight or over) significantly reduced the elevation of blood glucose levels. In experiment 2, the animals were divided into three groups: Group A fed on a control diet, Group B fed on a diet containing 5 mg acarbose in 100 g of diet and Group C fed on a diet containing 20 mg acarbose in 100 g of diet. The food intake in Group C was significantly reduced by 22% as compared to Group A, while the food intake in Group B showed no change. The high dose of acarbose showed a tendency to lower fasting blood glucose levels, but the difference was statistically insignificant. However, postprandial glucose levels in Group C at each period examined and in Group B at 30 days were significantly lower than the counterparts in Group A. Acarbose caused a dose-dependent decrease in serum total cholesterol levels and HDL-cholesterol: total cholesterol ratios were elevated in Group B and C. Serum triglyceride levels in Group B and C were extremely lower than those in Group A on and after 20 days. These results indicate that the addition of acarbose to the diet induces a decrease in postprandial blood glucose levels and simultaneously causes an improvement in lipid metabolism of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.  相似文献

The effect of dietary fats with varying degrees of unsaturation in the presence of different concentrations of vitamin E on tissue lipid levels was studied in rats. Rats were fed either menhaden oil, olive oil or coconut oil at 15% levels with either 0.1, 0.3 or 0.6 mg/g of vitamin E as alpha-tocopherol for four weeks. Rat serum and liver were analyzed for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triacylglycerol and phospholipids. In addition, fatty acid composition of serum lipids was also analyzed. Serum total cholesterol and triacylglycerol were significantly lower in rats fed menhaden oil than in those fed olive or coconut oil, while the HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in serum of rats fed menhaden and olive oil than in those fed coconut oil. Levels of vitamin E in the diet had only a significant effect on serum cholesterol and liver phospholipids. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant positive relationship between serum triacylglycerol and total cholesterol, and a negative correlation between triacylglycerol and HDL-cholesterol, and between total and HDL-cholesterol.In the liver, total cholesterol was significantly higher in rats fed coconut oil than in rats fed menhaden oil. Total liver phospholipids were lower in rats fed either coconut oil or olive oil compared to those fed menhaden oil, especially with higher levels of vitamin E intake. Higher levels of vitamin E in the diet appear to increase triacylglycerol and phospholipids in livers of rats fed menhaden oil. In the liver a significant negative correlation was observed between phospholipids and cholesterol. The type and degree of unsaturation (polyunsaturated fatty acids in menhaden oil, monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil and saturated fatty acids in coconut oil) significantly affected plasma and tissue lipids.  相似文献

The zinc and copper serum and hair concentrations of 691 3-18-y-old girls and boys previously determined as a part of the Multicentre Study of Atherosclerosis Precursors in Finnish Children and Adolescents were further analyzed in order to find a possible association between these two zinc and copper indices. The influence of hair color and the diameter of individual hair strands on hair concentrations were studied by the analysis of covariance. Hair color and serum zinc concentrations were found to be associated with hair zinc concentrations in boys. Such an association was not found for zinc and copper concentrations in girls. Hair vs serum concentrations in different age and hair color groups did not show however, a significant relationship either in copper or in zinc concentrations. The subjects with very low or high serum zinc or copper concentrations did not usually have extreme hair concentrations and vice versa. However, there were some subjects with low or high serum concentrations associated with low or high hair concentrations.  相似文献

Chronic alcoholics frequently show associated malnutrition. Both ethanol and malnutrition exert profound changes on zinc and copper metabolism. In this study, we found higher hair zinc and copper values in 43 male alcoholics than in 39 controls. Hair copper was significantly related to the amount of ethanol consumed, whereas hair zinc was higher in consumers of distilled beverages. No relation was observed between hair zinc and copper and nutritional status, kind of diet consumed, style of life, and liver cirrhosis. Consequently, hair zinc and copper levels are related only with alcohol intake.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of dietary iron content on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and on zinc and copper status in rats fed with a diet high in fat, fructose, and salt. Wistar rats were fed with diets high in fat, fructose, and salt, containing differing amounts of iron, namely, deficit, normal, and high levels. After 6 weeks, the animals were weighed and killed. The liver, heart, and pancreas were collected, as were blood samples. The total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, and insulin levels in the serum were measured. The iron, zinc, and copper concentrations in tissues and serum were determined. It was found that in rats fed with the iron-deficit diet, cholesterol and glucose profiles improved. Both deficit and excess iron in the diet decreased insulin concentration in rats and disturbed iron, zinc, and copper status. High-iron level in the diet decreased the relative mass of the pancreas. In conclusion, the decrease in serum insulin concentration observed in rats fed with the modified diet high in iron was associated with iron and copper status disorders, and also, with a relatively diminished pancreas mass. A deficit of iron in the diet improved lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in rats.  相似文献

ObjectiveOur aim was to assess the effects of dietary iron, and the compound capsaicin, on hemoglobin as well as metabolic indicators including blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, and glucose tolerance.ResultsHealthy rats fed a low-iron diet exhibited significantly reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, compared with rats fed a control diet. Significantly reduced blood lipid was also provoked by low dietary iron in diabetic rats, compared with those fed a control diet. Insulin, and glucose tolerance was only improved in healthy rats fed the low-iron diet. Significant increases in total cholesterol were found in diabetic rats fed a high-iron diet, compared with healthy rats fed the same diet, although no statistical differences were found for triglycerides. Hemoglobin levels, which were not statistically different in diabetic versus healthy rats fed the high-iron diet, fell when capsaicin was added. Capsaicin also provoked a fall in the level of cholesterol and triglycerides in diabetic animals, versus diabetics fed with the high iron diet alone. In conclusion, low levels of dietary iron reduced levels of serum triglycerides, hemoglobin, and cholesterol, and significantly improved insulin, and glucose tolerance in healthy rats. In contrast, a high-iron diet increased cholesterol significantly, with no significant changes to triglyceride concentrations. The addition of capsaicin to the high-iron diet (for diabetic rats) further reduced levels of hemoglobin, cholesterol, and triglycerides. These results suggest that capsaicin, may be suitable for the treatment of elevated hemoglobin, in patients.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: An imbalance between zinc and copper metabolism has been reported to predispose to coronary artery disease (CAD) in Western populations, but there are little data for other racial groups. We have therefore investigated the association between serum copper and zinc, and CAD in Iranian subjects undergoing coronary angiography. METHODS: Serum copper, zinc, fasting lipid profile, and blood glucose levels were measured in 114 patients (67 male and 47 female) undergoing routine coronary angiogram. Anthropometric features including blood pressure were determined using standard procedures. Demographic characteristics, including menopausal status and smoking habit, were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: Male patients had lower serum copper (p<0.05), lower serum zinc (p<0.05), and higher serum zinc/copper ratio (p<0.05) than females. Serum copper and zinc concentrations were significantly lower in the subjects with angiographically defined CAD than those patients with a normal angiogram, although the zinc/copper ratio was higher in these patients (p<0.001). Serum copper (r=-0.303, p<0.001) and zinc (r=-0.250, p<0.01) concentrations were both inversely related to age, and copper was positively associated with fasting serum triglycerides (r=0.188, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Serum copper and zinc concentrations were significantly lower in Iranian patients with abnormal versus those with a normal angiogram. However, the zinc/copper ratio was higher in patients with CAD compared to subjects without CAD. Serum zinc and copper concentrations appear to be influenced by several physiological factors including age and gender.  相似文献

Studies examining the role of zinc and copper nutriture as risk factors for cardiovascular disease in European Americans have produced conflicting results. This study assessed the associations between zinc and copper status and serum lipid levels in an adult African-American community. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 600 individuals (233 males, 367 females) from 25 to 65 yr of age using a random sampling design in a small city in Alabama. Anthropometric, dietary, and serum zinc, copper, and lipid measurements were made. The mean serum zinc and copper levels and dietary zinc intake were similar to that reported previously for European Americans. There were no significant associations between serum zinc, copper, or zinc/copper ratio and total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or triglyceride levels. For males, there was a small but significant association between dietary zinc and the total cholesterol/HDL-C ratio (r=−0.17, p=0.03). Similarly, females taking either zinc supplements or a multivitamin including zinc had higher HDL-C values than nonsupplementing females. Further prospective studies of the relationship between zinc status and lipid levels in African Americans are needed to verify these results.  相似文献

Assessment of copper and lipid profile in obese children and adolescents   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The aim of this study was to assess erythrocyte and plasma copper concentrations and correlate them with the lipid profile of overweight and obese children and adolescents. The study was performed with 15 over-weight and 30 obese children and adolescents, and the results were compared to the control group (21), aged 6–16 yr. Anthropometric assessment was carried out using body mass index (BMI). Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride serum levels were investigated. Erythrocyte and plasma copper levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Greater alterations in the lipid profile were observed in HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, with distinctions according to gender. The plasma copper concentrations in the overweight and obese male groups were significantly higher than those in the control group (p=0.0006). Negative correlations between plasma copper and total cholesterol (r=−0.54) and LDL cholesterol (r=−0.59) were observed in the obese male group. There was no statistical difference in copper erythrocyte concentrations. The obesity associated to disorders in lipid metabolism predisposes to changes in copper plasma concentrations, but there was no alteration in intracellular reserves, which suggests an important homeostatic control to compensate for plasma oscillations and metabolic alterations of the disease.  相似文献

Previous studies suggest a protective effect of vitamin D3 on zinc deficiency-induced insulin secretion and on pancreas β-cell function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin D on blood biochemical parameters, tissue zinc and liver glutathione in diabetic rats fed a zinc-deficient diet. For that purpose, Alloxan-induced diabetic rats were divided into four groups. The first group was fed a zinc-sufficient diet while the second group was fed a zinc-deficient diet. The third and fourth groups received zinc-sufficient or zinc-deficient diets plus oral vitamin D3 for 27 days. At the end of the experiment, blood, femur, pancreas, kidney and liver samples were taken from all rats. The serum, femur, pancreas, kidney and liver zinc concentrations, liver glutathione, serum alkaline phosphatase activity, daily body weight gain and food intake were lower in the zinc-deficient rats in comparison with those receiving adequate amounts of zinc. These values were increased in the zinc-deficient group that was supplemented with vitamin D3. The serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, urea, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase and blood glucose values were higher in rats fed a zinc adequate diet, but their concentrations were decreased by vitamin D3 supplementation. The serum total protein levels were not changed by zinc deficiency and vitamin D3 supplementation. These results suggest that vitamin D3 modulates tissue zinc, liver glutathione and blood biochemical values in diabetic rats fed a zinc-deficient diet.  相似文献

In the present study, the serum and hair levels of zinc, selenium, and copper were determined in children with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). A total of 52 anemic children aged 1–4 yr constituted the study group. Fortysix healthy children acted as controls. The copper and zinc levels were measured with an atomic absorption spectrophometer. Serum and hair selenium was determined by a spectroflourometric method. The serum zinc and selenium concentrations in the IDA group were found to be significantly lower and serum copper significantly higher than those in the controls (p<0.05). Lower iron, zinc, and selenium concentrations (p<0.001) but not copper were found in hair (p>0.05).  相似文献

The hypothesis was tested that there are interactions of marginal copper and vitamin A deficiency regarding iron and zinc status. Copper restriction (1 vs 5 mg Cu/kg diet) significantly lowered copper concentrations in plasma and tissues of rats and reduced blood hemoglobin, hematocrit, and iron concentrations in tibia and femur, but raised iron concentrations in liver. Vitamin A restriction (0 vs 4000 IU vitamin A/kg diet) reduced plasma retinol concentrations and induced a fall of blood hemoglobin and hematocrit. Neither copper nor vitamin A restriction for up to 42 d affected feed intake and body wt gain. There were no interrelated effects of vitamin A and copper deficiency on iron status. Copper deficiency slightly depressed liver, spleen, and kidney zinc concentrations. Vitamin A deficiency lowered zinc concentrations in heart, but only when the diets were deficient in copper.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the effects of oral zinc and magnesium supplementation on serum thyroid hormone and lipid levels in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Thirty-two albino male rats, weighing 234±34 g, were divided into four experimental groups (control, diabetic, diabetic+zinc supplemented and diabetic+ magnesium supplemented). The experiment lasted for 60 d. The first 45 d of the experiment was the supplementation and last 15 d was the supplementation and diabetes-inducing period. Diabetic+zinc-supplemented and diabetic+magnesium-supplemented groups were given orally (by adding in their drinking water) 227 mg/L of zinc and 100 mg/kg body weight (bw) of magnesium, respectively throughout the experiment. Control and diabetic groups served as controls and did not receive zinc or magnesium supplementation. Diabetic, diabetic+zinc-supplemented, and diabetic+magnesium-supplemented groups were given a daily injection (ip) of 100 mg/kg bw of alloxan for 15 d starting on d 46 of the experiment. The control group was only injected with the same volume of isotonic NaCl as the diabetic group received. At the end of the of the experiment, rats in all four groups were fasted for 12 h and blood samples were taken from the heart under ether anesthesia for the determination of thyroid hormone, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations. It was found that serum glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations were higher and serum T3 and T4 concentrations were lower in diabetic rats than those in the control group. Zinc supplementation did not change any parameter in diabetic rats. However, magnesium supplementation decreased the elevated total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations of the diabetic rats to the control level. It was concluded that oral magnesium supplementation might decrease the diabetes-induced disturbances of lipid metabolism.  相似文献

We examined the effects of intake of Korean foxtail millet protein (FMP) on plasma levels of lipid, glucose, insulin, and adiponectin in genetically type 2 diabetic KK-Ay mice. When mice were fed a normal FMP diet or a high-fat-high-sucrose diet containing FMP for 3 weeks, in both experiments plasma concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and adiponectin increased remarkably in comparison with a casein diet group, whereas concentrations of insulin decreased greatly and that of plasma glucose was comparable to that in the casein diet group. Considering the role of adiponectin, insulin, and HDL-cholesterol in diabetes, atherosclerosis, and obesity, it appears likely that FMP may improve insulin sensitivity and cholesterol metabolism through an increase in adiponectin concentration. Therefore, FMP would serve as another beneficial food component in obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.  相似文献

Background: We have shown that individually, dietary fiber and protein increase secretion of the anorexigenic and insulinotropic hormone, glucagon‐like peptide‐1 (GLP‐1). Objective: Our objective was to combine, in one diet, high levels of fiber and protein to maximize GLP‐1 secretion, improve glucose tolerance, and reduce weight gain. Methods and Procedures: Lean (+/?) and obese (cp/cp) male James C Russell corpulent (JCR:LA‐cp) rats lacking a functional leptin receptor were fed one of four experimental diets (control, high protein (HP), high fiber (HF, prebiotic fiber inulin), or combination (CB)) for 3 weeks. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed to evaluate plasma GLP‐1, insulin and glucose. Plasma lipids and intestinal proglucagon mRNA expression were determined. Results: Energy intake was lower with the HF diet in lean and obese rats. Weight gain did not differ between diets. Higher colonic proglucagon mRNA in lean rats fed a CB diet was associated with higher GLP‐1 secretion during OGTT. The HP diet significantly reduced plasma glucose area under the curve (AUC) during OGTT in obese rats, which reflected both an increased GLP‐1 AUC and higher fasting insulin. Diets containing inulin resulted in the lowest plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. Discussion: Overall, combining HP with HF in the diet increased GLP‐1 secretion in response to oral glucose, but did not improve glucose tolerance or lipid profiles more than the HF diet alone did. We also suggest that glycemic and insulinemic response to prebiotics differ among rat models and future research work should examine their role in improving glucose tolerance in diet‐induced vs. genetic obesity with overt hyperleptinemia.  相似文献

Effects of altered dietary zinc on levels of zinc, copper, magnesium, and calcium in organ and peripheral tissues were studied. When rats fed a zinc-deficient diet (1.3 μg Zn/g) for 28 d were compared with rats fed a control diet (37.5 μg Zn/g), levels of zinc were slightly lower in plasma, hair, and skin and 50% lower in femur and pancreas, whereas the levels of copper were higher in all tissue except plasma. Magnesium levels were higher than controls in the heart and lower in the spleen, whereas the calcium levels were lower in plasma, lung, spleen, kidney, and skin and strikingly higher in brain, hair, and femur. When rats fed a zinc-supplemented diet (1.0 mg Zn/g) were compared to the same conrols, levels of zinc in these were higher in all organs and peripheral tissues studied, except heart, lung, and liver; copper levels were higher in liver, kidney, and spleen; magnesium levels were significantly higher in the spleen, but were little affected in other tissues, although calcium levels were higher in pancreas, spleen, kidney, and skin and lower in plasma and hair. These data indicate that overall copper organ and peripheral tissue levels are affected inversely, and zinc and calcium levels directly, by zinc nutriture.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Physiological responses of 13 adult female collared peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) to high quality and low quality diets, fed for 15 weeks, were examined. The low quality diet simulated energy and protein intake of peccaries during poor range conditions resulting from drought. Blood samples were collected after 10 and 15 weeks of dietary treatment; urine samples were collected after 15 weeks of treatment.
  • 2.2. Females receiving the low quality diet for 15 weeks lost 27.4% of their original body weight, compared to no weight change among high quality-fed females.
  • 3.3. Red blood cell counts, hematocrits, and hemoglobin concentrations were significantly greater among females fed a high quality diet compared to those receiving a low quality diet. High quality-fed females also had a higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. Plasma fibrinogen concentration was nearly twice as great among females receiving the low quality diet compared to the high quality group.
  • 4.4. Consumption of the low quality diet resulted in significantly elevated serum levels of nonesterified fatty acids, alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, alpha-2 globulin and alpha globulin: beta globulin ratio.
  • 5.5. Consumption of the low quality diet resulted in significantly lowered serum levels of urea nitrogen, calcium, zinc, calcium: phosphorus, urea index, beta-1 flobulin, beta globulin: albumin ratio, thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
  • 6.6. Serum levels ofcreatinine, total bilirubin, glucose, cholesterol, gamma glutamyltransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, potassium, copper, magnesium, sodium chloride, total protein and gamma globulin were unaffected by diet quality.

The zinc, copper, and manganese status of seven children with malabsorption syndromes of varied etiology (MVE) and 12 with inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) receiving semi-synthetic diets was investigated using serum and hair trace element concentrations, dietary trace element intakes, and anthropometric measurements as the principal indices. The hair zinc levels of both test groups and hair manganese levels of the IEM group were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of their respective healthy controls matched by age, sex, and geographic location, despite comparable dietary zinc and manganese intakes in test and control subjects. Four subjects from the malabsorption and five from the inborn errors group had hair zinc levels below 100 μg/g (range 30–88 μg/g). Of these nine subjects, serum zinc levels were determined for six, and five were less than normal (range 64–74 μg/dL). In contrast, the copper status of the MVE and IEM subjects, as indicated by hair and dietary copper levels, was not lower than the controls. Mean serum copper levels were 136±30 and 171±40 μg/dL for the IEM and MVE groups, respectively. Levels for the MVE subjects were higher than published normal values. The suboptimal zinc and manganese status observed in some of these test subjects probably arose from malabsorption and decreased availability of dietary zinc and manganese. However, the zinc depletion was not severe enough to result in linear growth retardation.  相似文献
