The potential of three estuarine macroalgae (Ulvarotundata, Enteromorpa intestinalis andGracilaria gracilis) as biofilters for phosphate ineffluents of a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultivationtank was studied. These seaweeds thrive in Cádiz Bay and were alsoselected because of their economic potential, so that environmental andeconomicadvantages may be achieved by future integrated aquaculture practices in thelocal fish farms. The study was designed to investigate the functioning of Pnutrition of the selected species. Maximum velocity of phosphate uptake (2.86mol PO4 g–1 dry wth–1) was found in U. rotundata. This species also showed the highest affinity for this nutrient. At low flowrates (< 2 volumes d–1), the three species efficientlyfiltered the phosphate dissolved in the waste water, with a minimum efficiencyof 60.7% in U. rotundata. Net phosphate uptake rate wassignificantly affected by the water flow, being greatest at the highest rateassayed (2 volumes d–1). The marked decrease in tissue P shownby the three species during a flow-through experiment suggested that growth wasP limited. However, due to the increase in biomass, total P biomass increasedinthe cultures. A significant correlation was found between growth rates and thenet P biomass gained in the cultures. A three-stage design under low water flow(0.5 volumes d–1) showed that the highest growth rates (up to0.14 d–1) and integrated phosphate uptake rates(up to 5.8 mol PO4
3– g–1dry wt d–1) were found in E.intestinalis in the first stage, with decreasing rates in thefollowing ones. As a result, phosphate become limiting and low increments oreven losses of total P biomass in these stages were found suggesting thatphosphate was excreted from the algae. The results show the potential abilityofthe three species to reduce substantially, at low water flow, the phosphateconcentration in waste waters from a D. labrax cultivationtank, and thus the quality of effluents from intensive aquaculture practices. 相似文献

Three estuarine macroalgae (Ulva rotundata,Enteromorpha intestinalis, Gracilariagracilis) of economic potential were cultivated in the laboratory toassess their biofiltering capacities for ammonium in waste effluents from a seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultivation tank. The studywasdeveloped to investigate the functioning of N nutrition of the three species.Atlow water flow (< 2 volumes d–1) the three species strippedefficiently the ammonium dissolved in the waste water from the fish tank, withaminimum biofiltering efficiency estimate of 61% in unstarved cultures ofG. gracilis at a water flow of 2 volumesd–1. Maximum velocity for ammonium uptake (89.0 molNH4
+ g–1 dry wth–1) was found in U. rotundata, whereas G. gracilis showed the highest affinity for thisnutrient. The net ammonium uptake rate was significantly affected by the waterflow, being greatest at the highest flow assayed (2 volumesd–1). Variations of tissue N and C:N ratios during aflow-through experiment suggested that N was not limiting macroalgal growth. However, when ammonium was supplied at a flow rate of 0.5 volumesd–1, specially in a three-stage design, the marked reductionintissue N and the biomass C:N:P ratios suggested a more general nutrientdeficiency. A significant correlation was found between growth rates and the Nbiomass gained in the cultures. The three-stage design under low water flow(0.5volumes d–1) showed that the highest ammonium uptake rates (upto 80.9 mol NH4
+ g–1 dry wtd–1 in U. rotundata) were found inthe first stage, with decreasing rates in the following ones. As a result, lowincrements or even losses of total N biomass in these stages were found, suggesting that ammonium was excreted from the algae. We conclude that thesespecies present a potential ability to biofilter the ammonium dissolved inwastewater from a D. labrax cultivation tank, suggesting thatscaling up the biofiltration designs, future practises using these macroalgaemay be implemented in the local fish farms, resulting in both environmental andeconomical advantages. 相似文献

The accelerated development of shrimp farming in Brazil in recent decades has caused negative impacts to the environment. The most evident effects resulting from this activity is the increase in organic material, the reduction in oxygen and the excessive rise in water nutrients. Thus, there is a need for finding alternative solutions that can mitigate the negative impacts caused by this activity. A potentially viable solution is the use of macroalgae to remove nutrients from the cultivation systems. This study examined in situ (shrimp pond), the growth and storage of nitrogen and phosphorous from the macroalga Gracilaria caudata. A short-term measurement experiment was also conducted to evaluate the bioremediation potential this species. These results showed positive values for biomass and growth during the study period, except at day 45 for the tubular nets and day 75 for the cages, when they reached lower values than those of the initial weight. The results obtained indicate that G. caudata may reach annual production of 59.16 ton ha−1 of wet weight, which corresponds to 11.83 ton dry weight. Nitrogen and phosphorous content in the algal tissues increased with time. The mean for the period was 2.61 ± 0.26% and 0.20 ± 0.03% for the nitrogen and phosphorous, respectively. An estimate of the data showed that 1 ha of cultivated algae has the potential to remove 0.309 ton ha−1 year−1 of nitrogen and 0.024 ton ha−1 year−1 of phosphorous. The study of the biofiltration capacity of G. caudata showed a significant reduction in nutrients. The removal of NH4–N was around 59.5%, NO3–N 49.6% and PO4–P 12.3% in 4 h. These results suggest that although G. caudata showed relatively modest growth rates, they can be cultivated together with shrimp and can contribute to the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous from the pond. Moreover, the capacity to efficiently remove nutrients demonstrated in laboratory experiments encourages the use of this alga as a bioremediation agent. 相似文献

Photosynthesis and growth rates of Laurencia brongniartii J. Agardh (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) in preparation for cultivation 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Laurencia brongniartii is usually found at depths below 4 m, but can be found in shallow subtidal areas in crevices and on the walls of a coral reef in Amami Oshima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, where irradiances were significantly lower than those at similar depths in open water. In preparation for the possible cultivation of this species for its antibiotic compounds, the effects of temperature and irradiance on photosynthesis and growth were measured. Photosynthesis and growth rates of L. brongniartii explants were highest at 26 and 28 °C, which closely corresponded to temperatures found during August to late December when it was most abundant. The estimated maximum photosynthesis rate (P
max) was 4.41 mol photon m–2 s–1 at 26 °C and 4.07 mol photon m–2 s–1 at 28 °C. Saturating irradiance occurred at 95 mol photon m–2 s–1 at 26 °C and 65 mol photon m–2 s–1 at 28 °C. In contrast, growth experiments at 41.7 mol photon m–2 s–1 caused bleaching of explants and the maximum growth rate observed during the study was 3.02 ± 0.75% day–1 at 28 °C and 25 mol photon m–2 s–1. The difference in the saturating irradiance for photosynthesis and the irradiance that caused bleaching in growth experiments suggests that long-term exposure to high irradiance was detrimental and should be addressed before the initiation of large scale cultivation. 相似文献

Summary Small birch plants (Betula pendula Roth.) were grown in a climate chamber at different, exponentially increasing rates of nitrogen supply and at different photon flux densities. This resulted in treatments with relative growth rate equal to the relative rate of increase in nitrogen supply and with different equilibrium values of plant nitrogen concentration. Nitrogen productivity (rate of dry matter increase per plant nitrogen) was largely independent of nitrogen supply and was greater at higher photon flux density. Leaf weight ratio, average specific leaf area (and thus leaf area ratio) were all greater at better nitrogen supply and at lower values of photon flux density. The dependencies were such that the ratio of total projected leaf area to plant nitrogen at a given photon flux density was similar at all rates of nitrogen supply. The ratio was greater at lower values of photon flux density. At a given value of photon flux density, net assimilation rate and net photosynthetic rate per shoot area (measured at the growth climate) were only slightly greater at better rates of nitrogen supply. Values were greater at higher photon flux densities. Acclimation of the total leaf area to plant nitrogen ratio and of net assimilation rate was such that nitrogen productivity was largely saturated with respect to photon flux density at values greater than 230 mol m-2 s-1. At higher photon flux densities, any potential gain in nitrogen productivity associated with higher net assimilation rates was apparently offset by lower ratios of total leaf area to plant nitrogen. 相似文献

Steam explosion was investigated as a pretreatment step in the isolation of agar from the macroalgaGracilaria dura. As compared to conventional procedures, the yield of agar obtained using this method on alkali (Na2CO3) conditioned algal material was higher. Extractions performed first at 95 °C and then at 121 °C showed that the major fraction of the agar was extracted at 95 °C, independently of the pretreatment. The efficiency of sulphate hydrolysis during steam explosion ofG. dura previously conditioned in Na2CO3, was similar to that of a NaOH based alkali pretreatment. Except for a lower nitrogen content of the sample obtained after NaOH based alkali pretreatment and a higher 6-O-methyl--d-galactose content in the agar after steam explosion, the chemical composition of the agars showed no significant difference. Agars extracted after steam explosion had melting temperature, gel strength and apparent modulus of elasticity lower than those of corresponding native and alkali (NaOH) pretreated samples, but comparable to those of a commercial sample.Author for correspondence 相似文献

Species of Ulva have a wide range of commercial applications and are increasingly being recognized as promising candidates for integrated aquaculture. In South Africa, Ulva has been commercially cultivated in integrated seaweed-abalone aquaculture farms since 2002, with more than 2000 tonnes of biomass cultivated per annum in land-based paddle raceways. However, the identity of the species of Ulva grown on these farms remains uncertain. We therefore characterized samples of Ulva cultivated in five integrated multi-trophic aquaculture farms (IMTA) across a wide geographical range and compared them with foliose Ulva specimens from neighboring seashores. The molecular markers employed for this study were the chloroplast-encoded Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (rbcL), the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of the nuclear, and the chloroplast elongation factor tufA. All currently cultivated specimens of Ulva were molecularly resolved as a single species, U. lacinulata. The same species has been cultivated for over a decade, although a few specimens of two other species were also present in early South African IMTA systems. The name Ulva uncialis is adopted for the Ulva “Species A” by Fort et al. (2021), Molecular Ecology Resources, 22, 86) significantly extending the distribution range for this species. A comparison with wild Ulva on seashores close to the farms resulted in five new distribution records for South Africa (U. lacinulata, U. ohnoi, U. australis, U. stenophylloides, and U. aragoënsis), the first report of a foliose form of U. compressa in the region, and one new distribution record for Namibia (U. australis). This study reiterates the need for DNA confirmation, especially when identifying morphologically simple macroalgae with potential commercial applications. 相似文献

A field experiment was carried out at two sites off Yucatan State, Southeast Mexico, in order to determine the feasibility of culturing the red seaweedEucheuma isiforme; this was done during May–September 1989. At both sites (Uaymitun and Dzilam) the 25 days harvest and 14 algae per line plant density growth rates (2.21% day–1 and 1.21% day–1, respectively) were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those obtained with other combinations of the two factors tested (50, 75, 100 and 125 days harvest and 9 and 14 algae per line plant density). The mean carrageenan content of the cultured algae was 35.8% and 31.4% at Uaymitun and Dzilam, respectively. 相似文献

Primary production rates, chlorophyll and phytoplankton biovolume were measured monthly from April 2003 to November 2004 in
Lake Tana, a large tropical lake in the highlands of Ethiopia. The lake is characterised by low nutrient concentrations, and
a low water transparency due to high silt load of the inflowing rivers during the rainy seasons (May–November) and daily resuspension
of sediments in the inshore zone. The mean chlorophyll-a concentrations varied seasonally and ranged from 2.6 mg m−3 to 8.5 mg m−3 (mean: 4.5 mg m−3) in the offshore zone. Primary production was measured using the light–dark bottles technique. We incubated only at three
depths, i.e. 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 m. Therefore, we may have missed a substantial part of the depth production profile and probably
also frequently missed P
max. Gross primary production in the openwater averaged 2.43 g O2 m−2 d−1 and ranged between 0.03 g O2 m−2 d−1 and 10.2 g O2 m−2 d−1; production was significantly higher in the inshore zone. The highest production rates were observed in the post-rainy season
(Oct–Nov), which coincided with a bloom of Microcystis and higher chlorophyll levels. This seasonal high production is probably caused by a relatively high nutrient availability
in combination with favourable light conditions. The gross primary production rates of L. Tana are among the lowest compared
with other tropical lakes. This will be partly the result of our underestimation of gross primary production by often missing
P
max. Another cause is the oligotrophic nature of the lake in combination with its relatively low water transparency. The gross
primary production per unit chlorophyll in the openwater zone was in the same range as in 30 other tropical lakes and reservoirs.
The higher primary production in the inshore zone is probably the result of the daily water column mixing (Z
mix ≥ Z
t) in this area, enhancing nutrient recycling. A large proportion of the annual primary production is realised in one of the
four seasons only. This productive post-rainy season is relatively short (2 months) and therefore efficiency of transfer of
matter between the first and second trophic level of the Lake ecosystem will be poor. 相似文献

Relationship between growth, nitrogen fixation and assimilation in a legume (Medicago sativa L.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Symbiotic N2 fixation, NO

assimilation and protein accumulation in the shoots were measured simultaneously in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) grown in the field or in pots, in order to study how the balance between the two modes of nitrogen nutrition could be
influenced by agronomic factors, such as harvest, mineral nitrogen supply and drought stress.
During periods of rapid growth, fixation and assimilation may function simultaneously; they are antagonistic at the beginning
and at the end of the growth cycle, when the nitrogen requirement of the plant is lower. When nitrogen nutrition does not
limit growth, mineral nitrogen supply favours assimilation at the expense of fixation, but does not modify the amount of nitrogen
accumulated, which is adjusted to the growth capacity of the plant.
After cutting, nitrate assimilation compensated for the decrease in fixation and supplied the plant with the nitrogen required
by the regrowth, the proliferation of which determined the fixation recovery.
Drought stress decreased N2 fixation much more than NO
3

assimilation. The latter made growth recovery possible when water supply conditions became normal again.
These results suggested the existence of an optimum level of nitrate assimilation, which differed depending on the age of
the plants and allowed both maximum growth and fixing activity. 相似文献

Nitrogen uptake, assimilation and transport in barley in the presence of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide
A. J. Rowland 《Plant and Soil》1986,91(3):353-356
Summary Exposure of the leaves of young barley plants to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was shown to affect the rate of translocation of N, the form in which it is transported in the xylem stream and the partitioning of N between roots and shoots. Following its entry through the leaves, NO2 is assimilated by the plant into reduced nitrogenous compounds which accounted for the major increases in plant N content and growth. The various effects of atmospheric NO2 upon barley seedlings were strongly influenced by nitrate supply to the roots. 相似文献

A metabolic pathway, known as the mannitol cycle in fungi, has been identified as a new entity in the eulittoral mangrove red algaCaloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) J. Agardh. Three specific enzymes, mannitol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase (Mt1PDH; EC 1.1.1.17), mannitol-1-phosphatase (MtlPase; EC 3.1.3.22), mannitol dehydrogenase (MtDH; EC 1.1.1.67) and one nonspecific hexokinase (HK; EC 2.7.1.1) were determined and biochemically characterized in cell-free extracts. Mannitol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase showed activity maxima at pH 7.0 [fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) reduction] and pH 8.5 [oxidation of mannitol-1-phosphate (Mt1P)], and a very high specificity for both carbohydrate substrates. TheK
m values were 1.4 mM for F6P, 0.09 mM for MOP, 0.020 mM for NADH and 0.023 mM for NAD+. For the dephosphorylation of MOP, MtlPase exhibited a pH optimum at 7.2, aK
m value of 1.2 mM and a high requirement of Mg2+ for activation. Mannitol dehydrogenase had activity maxima at pH 7.0 (fructose reduction) and pH 9.8 (mannitol oxidation), and was less substrate-specific than Mt1PDH and MtlPase, i.e. it also catalyzed reactions in the oxidative direction with arabitol (64.9%), sorbitol (31%) and xylitol (24.8%). This enzyme showedK
m values of 39 mM for fructose, 7.9 mM for mannitol, 0.14 mM for NADH and 0.075 mM for NAD+. For the non-specific HK, only theK
m values for fructose (0.19 mM) and glucose (7.5 mM) were determined. The activities of the anabolic enzymes Mt1PDH and MtlPase were always at least two orders of magnitude higher than those of the degradative enzymes, indicating a net carbon flow towards a high intracellular mannitol pool. The function of mannitol metabolism inC. leprieurii as a biochemical adaptation to the environmental extremes in the mangrove habitat is discussed.Abbreviations F6P

Growth of the seaweed Ulva rigida C. Agardh was investigated in relation to biomass densities, internal nutrient pools and external nutrient supply. Research was carried out from 23 March to 5 July 1994 in the Sacca di Goro (Po Delta, Northern Italy), whose south-eastern part was covered by extensive mats of Ulva rigida. Two types of field experiments were conducted by incubating Ulva thalli inside large cages. In the first experiment, beginning on 23 March, 100 g of wet thalli were placed into the cages, allowed to grow for two weeks, then collected and replaced. This procedure was repeated 8 times over the study period. In the second experiment, Ulva thalli were left inside the cages and collected at selected time intervals (14, 27, 41, 64 and 76 days) in order to simulate the effects of increased density on growth and nutrient storage. We recorded specific growth rates (NGR) ranging from 0.025 to 0.081 d–1 for a period up to two months in the repeated short-term experiments performed at relatively low initial algal densities (300–500 g AFDW m–3). These NGR resulted significantly related to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the water column. Tissue concentrations of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TN) were almost constant, while extractable nitrate decreased in a similar manner to DIN in the water column. Total phosphorus showed considerable variation, probably linked to pulsed freshwater inflow. In the long-term incubation experiment, NGR of Ulva was inversely related to density. Internal concentrations of both total P and TN reached maximum values after one month; thereafter P concentration remained almost constant, while TN decreased below 2% w/w (by dry weight). The TN decrease was also accompanied by an abrupt decrease in nitrate tissue concentration. The biomass incubated over the two month period suffered a progressive N limitation as shown by a decreasing NY ratio (49.4 to 14.6). The reciprocal control of Ulva against biogeochemical environment and viceversa is a key factor in explaining both resource competition and successional stages in primary producer communities dominated by Ulva. However, when the biomass exceeds a critical threshold level, approximately 1 kg AFDW m–3, the macroalgal community switches from active production to rapid decomposition, probably as a result of selfshading, biomass density and development of anaerobic conditions within the macroalgal beds. 相似文献

The effects of increased CO2 levels (10,000 μl l−1) in cultures of the green nitrophilic macroalga Ulva rigida C. Agardh were tested under conditions of N saturation and N limitation, using nitrate as the only N source. Enrichment with
CO2 enhanced growth, while net photosynthesis, gross photosynthesis, dark respiration rates and soluble protein content decreased.
The internal C pool remained constant at high CO2, while the assimilated C that was released to the external medium was less than half the values obtained under ambient CO2 levels. This higher retention of C provided the source for extra biomass production under N saturation. In N-sufficient thalli,
nitrate-uptake rate and the activity of nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1) increased under high CO2 levels. This did not affect the N content or the internal C:N balance, implying that the extra N-assimilation capacity led
to the production of new biomass in proportion to C. Growth enhancement by increased level of CO2 was entirely dependent on the enhancement effect of CO2 on N-assimilation rates. The increase in nitrate reductase activity at high CO2 was not related to soluble carbohydrates or internal C. This indicates that the regulation of N assimilation by CO2 in U. rigida might involve a different pathway from that proposed for higher plants. The role of organic C release as an effective regulatory
mechanism maintaining the internal C:N balance in response to different CO2 levels is discussed.

Elevated nutrient content of tropical macroalgae increases rates of herbivory in coral, seagrass, and mangrove habitats 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We explored the role of food quality in herbivore preference for macroalgae by comparing consumption of Acanthophora spicifera with and without elevated tissue nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Algal enrichment effects on herbivory were examined in coral, seagrass, and mangrove habitats along a sparsely populated Honduran island protected from fishing. Nutrient enrichment led to significantly increased grazing by herbivores across habitats. Consumption of enriched algae increased by 91% compared to controls among the mangrove roots, where herbivory rates were generally lowest. In the heavily grazed seagrass and coral habitats, nutrient enrichment increased consumption by 30 and 20%, respectively, with the effect more spatially variable than among the mangrove roots. We suggest that, at least on the local scale, intact herbivore populations may be able to compensate for effects of increased nutrient supply by locating and consuming nutrient-enriched algae, but that the importance of this mechanism varies both among and within habitats.Communicated by: R. In integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), seaweeds have the capacity to reduce the environmental impact of nitrogen-rich
effluents in coastal ecosystems. To establish such bioremediation systems, selection of suitable seaweed species is important.
The distribution and productivity of seaweeds vary seasonally based on water temperature and photoperiod. In Korea, candidate
genera such as Pophyra, Laminaria, and Undaria grow from autumn to spring. In contrast, Codium grows well at relatively high water temperatures in summer. Thus, aquaculture systems potentially could capitalize on Codium’s capacity for rapid growth in the warm temperatures of late summer and early fall. In this study, we investigated ammonium
uptake and removal efficiency by Codium fragile. In laboratory experiments, we grew C. fragile under various water temperatures (10, 15, 20, and 25°C), irradiances (dark, 10, and 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1), and initial ammonium concentrations (150 and 300 μM); in all cases, C. fragile exhausted the ammonium supply for 6 h. At 150 μM of , ammonium removal efficiency was greatest (99.5 ± 2.6%) when C. fragile was incubated at 20°C under 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1. At 300 μM of , removal efficiency was greatest (86.3 ± 2.1%) at 25°C under 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Ammonium removal efficiency was significantly greater at 20 and 25°C under irradiance of 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1 than under other conditions tested. 相似文献

Summary The concentration, uptake and element use efficiency of N, P and K in one C3 annual (Polypogon monspeliensis) and two C4 (Echinochloa colonum, an annual, andDichathium annulatum, a perennial) grasses were determined during winter and summer seasons in monocultures raised in field plots at three moisture
levels, viz. full, half and one-fourth of field capacity. At each moisture regime the plants were clipped thrice at moderate and severe
levels corresponding to 40 and 80% of live green. The concentration of these elements was characteristic of the growth habit
of these plants;e.g. the build up of concentration was maximum in leaf of the annuals while it was comparable in crown and leaf of Dichanthium.
The N level was maximum in Polypogon. The nutrient use effiency was comparable in the two annuals and maximum K and N use
were obtained in Polypogon and Dichanthium, respectively. 相似文献
