Abstract.  1. Most temperate insects undergo diapause at a specific developmental stage to overcome severe winters. The bruchine beetle Bruchidius dorsalis in a warmer region in Japan, however, has diverse over-wintering stages – non-diapausing larvae, diapausing larvae, and diapausing adults, whereas in a cooler region, it over-winters only as the final instar larva or adult in diapause.
2. The geographical pattern of over-wintering stages in 12 populations was investigated over a wide range along the mainland of Japan. It revealed that a distinct geographical pattern of over-wintering stages exists in relation to temperature conditions. In regions with warmer climates, the proportion of non-diapausing larvae increased and B. dorsalis had a more complex over-wintering stage structure.
3. Life cycles were also compared between two areas of Japan by field experiments. In the cooler area, the first generation over-wintered in the diapausing larval or adult stage. Conversely, in the warmer area, diapause was induced later and some of the first-generation adults produced second-generation offspring before over-wintering.
4. Based on the geographical cline of climates and the differences in cold hardiness among stages, we can demonstrate that the over-wintering stage variation among and within populations results from an adaptive timing of diapause induction in each region, because the late larval or adult diapauses protect pupae or eggs – which unlike other stages are not cold hardy – from being produced late in the season.  相似文献

In the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday, the incidence of diapause around the critical photoperiod was dependent on temperature. At a photoperiod of 12 h light:12 h dark, a significantly higher proportion of diapausing individuals was found at 12 degrees C than at 15 degrees C. The second larval stage of the parasitoid was most sensitive to photoperiod and localised-illumination experiments showed that the parasitoid responded independently of the aphid host. The sex ratio of the population which emerged after rearing in short-days and/or after diapause was male biased. Topical application of the juvenile hormone-mimic, pyriproxyfen, before or during diapause delayed emergence of Aphidius ervi but did not induce diapause or influence its termination. The ecdysteroid mimic RH 5849 induced diapause in a few treated individuals but did not affect diapause termination.  相似文献

粟穗螟Manpava bipunctella Ragonot在川南地区为二化性兼性滞育的昆虫。光周期是诱发滞育的主导因素,在中位温度下,滞育与否主要取决于幼虫发育期间的每日光照时数。在2s℃恒温下,临界光周期为14小时38分。幼虫对光照刺激反应的敏感期为低龄期。 温度和食料效应只发生在每天14小时以上的长光照下,低温有抵销长光照抑制滞育的作用,高温影响不显著;取食玉米的幼虫滞育率比高粱的高,并随寄主生育阶段的发展而增高。该虫滞育解除必需每天14-15小时的长光照;不利于滞育发育和解除,适宜温度为10一25℃。本文最后讨论了该虫滞育形成和解除的特点对发生规律的作用及在测报上的意义。  相似文献

Abstract:  Diapause was induced in a Central European population of Ips typographus grown at 20°C when the day length decreased below 16 h [50% diapause incidence occurred in the 14.7:9.3 h L:D (light:dark) regime]. The non-diapausing adults fed on days 2–6 and 10–14 after the ecdysis and swarmed after the second feeding bout with chorionated eggs in the ovaries and sperm in the spermiducts. Neither gonads nor the flight muscles matured and no swarming occurred in the diapausing adults. The development from egg to adult took about 34 days in both 18:6 h (no diapause) and 12:12 h L:D (diapause) regimes, but it was extended by up to 30% without diapause induction when only larvae or pupae were exposed to L:D 12:12 h. Diapause was induced in insects reared at L:D 12:12 h through the last larval and the pupal instars and/or in the adult stage. Temperature ≥ 23°C prevented diapause induction at L:D 12:12 h but diapause occurred at L:D 14:10 h associated with 26:6°C thermoperiod. The effect of thermoperiods on the developmental rate requires further research. Exposure of the non-diapausing adults to 5°C for several days blocked feeding and evoked a diapause-like state, whereas diapausing adults fed and their gonads slowly developed at this temperature. Diapausing adults exposed in forest to low night temperatures and transferred in October to 20°C readily reproduced at 18:6, but not 12:12 h L:D photoperiods. After 2-months at 5°C and darkness, they became insensitive to the photoperiod, matured and most of them also swarmed at 20°C in the 12:12 h L:D regime. In a Scandinavian population, diapause occurred at 18:6 h L:D and was terminated either by exposure to 5°C or by very long photoperiod (L:D 20:4 h) combined with high temperature (23°C).  相似文献

亚洲玉米螟Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée)属兼性滞育昆虫, 其滞育特性与种群利用适生境的最大化和季节性活动密切相关。解析季节性因素如光周期和温度对其滞育的诱导作用可为预测种群发生动态提供科学依据。本实验在HPS 500型和HPG-320H型自动控制环境气候箱中, 测定了RH 80%下温度20℃, 27℃和30℃与11个光周期组合对吉林农安(NA)、 河北衡水(HS)、 广东惠州(HZ)和海南海口(HK)等4个地理种群的滞育诱导作用。结果表明: 光周期、 温度及其交互作用均对亚洲玉米螟滞育诱导具有重要影响, 其中光周期在滞育诱导中起主导作用。在20℃条件下, 其光周期反应曲线属典型的长日照反应型, 临界光周期随种群分布的地理纬度降低而缩短, 4个地理种群NA, HS, HZ和HK的临界日昼长依次为14 h 3 min, 13 h 59 min, 13 h 32 min和13 h 7 min, 最有效的滞育诱导光周期是日昼长12 h。另一方面, 随种群分布纬度升高, 其对光周期诱导滞育的敏感性降低。温度为27℃时, 其光周期反应曲线为短日照 长日照反应型, 各种群有两个临界光周期, 临界日昼长依次为12 h 50 min和13 h 32 min, 11 h 35 min和13 h 8 min, 12 h 58 min和13 h 1 min, 以及11 h 50 min和12 h 26 min, 且最有效的滞育诱导光周期范围的滞育率明显低于20℃。一定温度范围内(20℃~27℃), 随温度升高, 临界光周期缩短; 温度达到30℃时则滞育显著被抑制, 滞育率仅为4.3%或更低。这些结果说明温度对亚洲玉米螟滞育的光周期诱导具有很强的补偿作用。因此, 在自然界亚洲玉米螟的滞育属具有温度补偿作用的长日照反应型昆虫, 临界光周期随地理纬度北移而增长; 种群滞育的短日照 长日照反应型特性可能是产生局部世代种群的重要内因。  相似文献

Field experiments conducted in the environs of St. Petersburg (Russia) with a local population of Calliphora vicina showed that induction of larval diapause under natural conditions was significantly dependent on day lengths and temperature. The maternal photoperiodic response had a distinct threshold: the first diapausing larvae hatched from the eggs laid in the middle of August when the day length was 16 h; at shorter photoperiods, the fraction of diapausing larvae depended only on temperature. At the mean temperature of 16°C, larval diapause was rarely recorded; at 12–13°C, about 50% of the larvae entered diapause; at 7–9°C, nearly all the larvae entered diapause. These results of the field experiments agree well with the parameters of photoperiodic and thermal responses studied in the laboratory at constant temperatures and photoperiods.  相似文献

The larvae of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) grown at 25 degrees C and long photoperiod (16:8h light:dark) pupate in the 5th or 6th (mostly) larval instar, while the larvae reared under a short photoperiod (12:12h) enter diapause during which they consume some food and undergo up to 12 (usually 3-4) stationary larval molts. Diapause programming includes an increase of juvenile hormone (JH) titer in the hemolymph from about 20 to 50 nM in the 4th and 5th instar larvae (titer in earlier instars was not measured). JH I, II, and III are present in approximate ratio 1-2:10:1. The JH titer drops to zero before pupation but remains around 20 nM during diapause. Perfect extra larval molts associated with a body weight increase can be induced in the non-diapausing larvae with a JH analogue (JHA). The weight rise is due to accumulation of reserves and not to a general body growth. The timing of extra molts is similar to the molting pattern of the diapausing larvae only when JHA is present since early larval instars. In the diapausing larvae, JHA application affects neither molting periodicity nor the body weight. It is concluded that (1) Increased JH titer in early larval instars is a part of diapause programming; (2) The extension of larval stage in the diapausing larvae, but not the timing pattern of extra molts, is due to continuously high JH titer; (3) The diapause program includes low food intake, maintenance of a certain body weight, and periodic larval molts.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Diapause allows insects to cope with adverse weather conditions but also poses substantial fitness costs, e.g. through reduced survival of the diapausing stage or sublethal effects in the following season.
2. The energetic costs of diapause in females of the parasitoid Asobara tabida Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were assessed using experimental manipulation of diapause duration.
3. An increase in diapause length not only led to higher mortality among diapausing pupae but also caused a significant decrease in egg load, fat reserves, and dry weight of the emerging adult females.
4. Only larvae with sufficient resources were able to survive the entire diapause period and there was a trade-off between the metabolic costs of diapause and adult fitness components.
5. In contrast, the size (tibia length) of emerging females increased with increasing diapause duration. It is proposed that this may be due to a genetic correlation between larval dry weight and adult size, so that selection for heavier larvae would result in larger adults even when resources are limited.
6. Ultimately, the evolution of diapause duration and its consequences for adult performance will depend on the costs of overwintering and the ecological conditions in the habitat.  相似文献

Abstract. The intensity of larval diapause in Sesamia nonagrioides Lef (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was investigated under laboratory conditions. Newly hatched larvae were exposed to different stationary photoperiods (from LD 7 : 17 h to LD 14 : 10 h), at a constant temperature of 25 °C. Diapause incidence was higher when larvae were exposed to daylengths shorter than the critical value (LD 12 : 12 h), whereas the within‐treatment variation in the larval period appeared to be significantly correlated with the photoperiod applied. The incidences of diapause and the duration of larval development were also measured after exposing larvae to short photoperiods (LD 8 : 16 h, LD 10 : 14 h or LD 12 : 12 h) in combination with various temperatures (20, 22.5 or 25 °C). Although an increase in the incidence of diapause appeared with the lowering of the temperature, no statistical differences were observed in the time needed for pupation within the photoperiodic treatments at the temperatures of 20 and 22.5 °C. Furthermore, when diapausing larvae were transferred to the long photoperiod of LD 16 : 8 h, they immediately proceeded to pupation, regardless of the photoperiod or the temperature to which they had been previously exposed, indicating that there were no differences in the intensity of diapause. Photoperiodic changes from LD 10 : 14 h to LD 12 : 12 h or to LD 14 : 10 h at different larval ages reduced the intensity of diapause with (a) early age of transfer and (b) increase of daylength. By contrast, when larvae were transferred from the long photoperiod of LD 14 : 10 h to shorter, such as LD 10 : 14 h or LD 12 : 12 h, a small increase in the intensity of diapause with the shortening of the daylength was apparent. These results support the hypothesis that insects may compare the duration of the photoperiod and could classify them as either longer or shorter in relation to the critical value.  相似文献

Two actin genes cloned from Culex pipiens L. are upregulated during adult diapause. Though actins 1 and 2 were expressed throughout diapause, both genes were most highly expressed early in diapause. These changes in gene expression were accompanied by a conspicuous redistribution of polymerized actin that was most pronounced in the midguts of diapausing mosquitoes that were exposed to low temperature. In nondiapausing mosquitoes reared at 25 degrees C and in diapausing mosquitoes reared at 18 degrees C, polymerized actin was clustered at high concentrations at the intersections of the muscle fibers that form the midgut musculature. When adults 7-10 days post-eclosion were exposed to low temperature (-5 degrees C for 12 h), the polymerized actin was evenly distributed along the muscle fibers in both nondiapausing and diapausing mosquitoes. Exposure of older adults (1 month post-eclosion) to low temperature (-5 degrees C for 12 h) elicited an even greater distribution of polymerized actin, an effect that was especially pronounced in diapausing mosquitoes. These changes in gene expression and actin distribution suggest a role for actins in enhancing survival of diapausing adults during the low temperatures of winter by fortification of the cytoskeleton.  相似文献

The processes of local adaptation and ecological speciation can be better understood by studying the genetic background of life‐history decisions. The sex chromosomes host genes for many population differences in the Lepidoptera and therefore the inheritance of diapause determination in the butterfly Polygonia c‐album may be hypothesized to be sex‐linked. In the present study, Polygonia c‐album (L.) from Spain and Sweden and hybrid offspring are raised under an LD 17 : 7 h photocycle that induces most pure Swedish individuals to develop into the diapausing dark morph and most pure Spanish individuals into the light and directly‐developing morph. If inheritance of the daylength threshold for diapause is X‐linked, as is known to be the case for host‐plant preferences, females should follow the developmental path of their male parents' populations. However, female hybrids instead have a diapause propensity intermediate to that of their parental stocks and, consequentially, diapause determination is not X‐linked. However, male hybrids eclose as the diapausing morph to a higher extent than females and, moreover, this pattern is more pronounced in the Spanish female × Swedish male cross than in the reciprocal cross. Hence, it is concluded that the genetic determination of the critical daylength for diapause is mainly autosomal but with some influence of sex‐linked genes and/or parental effects, possibly as an effect of the importance of protandry for males. Such sex effects could provide a starting point for the evolution of population differences inherited on the sex chromosomes.  相似文献

Abstract The bruchid beetle Bruchidius dorsalis Fahraeus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) has been known to undergo larval diapause during the final instar under short photoperiods ( Kurota & Shimada, 2001 ). This species has a multivoltine life cycle and the overwintering stages show a geographical variation across Japan ( Kurota & Shimada, 2002 ). In cooler areas, overwintering occurs during the final instar, whereas in warmer climates overwintering can occur during several developmental stages: non‐diapausing young instars, diapausing instars, and adults. In this study, we investigated the adult reproductive diapause in three populations from different geographical regions to clarify the role of geographical variation on overwintering strategies. We found that: (1) B. dorsalis entered reproductive diapause in addition to larval diapause under short photoperiods, (2) diapause propensity was higher and the critical photoperiod was longer in populations from cooler regions, and (3) the sensitive photoperiod range was the first 5 days after emergence. Predictions of the overwintering stage, derived from critical photoperiods, were consistent with actual overwintering stages observed in each population. The geographical variation in diapause induction is likely to reflect the adaptive overwintering strategy in each local environment.  相似文献

Abstract. .The effects of photoperiod and low temperature on diapause termination in the yellow-spotted longicorn beetle, Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were examined using a population from Ino, Japan. Diapausing insects obtained by rearing larvae under short daylength (12 or 13 h) at 25oC were subjected to various treatments. When the photoperiod was changed at the same temperature, diapausing larvae showed a long-day response with a critical daylength between 13.5 and 14h. The diapause was terminated and consequently pupation occurred if the daylength was longer than 13.5 h. Chilling the diapausing larvae at 10oC for 30 or more days also terminated diapause in most larvae irrespective of the photoperiods during and after chilling treatment. In contrast, the post-chilling photoperiod had a critical effect on development of diapausing larvae chilled for only 15 days.  相似文献

Abstract. Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebvre diapauses as mature larvae. Once diapause is induced, larvae continue to grow and moult with no apparent changes, so distinction between non-diapausing and diapausing larvae is difficult. In the present work two physiological markers of diapause induction are obtained and their efficacy in detecting diapause onset and in monitoring diapause development in field populations is evaluated. The first marker is based on the differential capacity of two photoregimes, LD 0:24 h and LD 16:8 h, to reverse diapause induction. When larvae of the first and second stadia were subjected to the diapause-inducing LD 12:12 h light cycle and then transferred to LD 0:24 h, larvae pupated after a development duration significantly higher than that of the larvae transferred to LD 168 h. This criterion was used to monitor diapause development in overwintering larvae until field-collected larvae submitted to LD 0:24 h pupated synchronously with those submitted to LD 16:8 h. This occurred between late January and early March. The second marker refers to development of imaginal wing discs. A relative index of the tracheal mass area divided by the total disc area diminishes steadily during development in non-diapausing sixth-instar larvae until it becomes zero just before pupation, whereas it remains constant in diapausing larvae. Though wing disc development was blocked in diapausing sixth-instar larvae, the disc continued to grow and, consequently, the total area of the disc was not a suitable marker of diapause induction. When the constancy of the relative area index was used to monitor diapause development and termination in overwintering larvae, the results agreed with those obtained using the first criterion and with previous field observations.  相似文献

Summary The developmental rate, critical photoperiod, and diapause intensity were determined for three populations of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella, from Missouri, Mississippi and Kansas. Mississippi larvae grew at the highest rate and Missouri larvae grew at the lowest rate. The zero developmental temperatures (°C) for the Missouri population were estimated from regression lines as follows: 10.5° (eggs), 10.8° (diapausing larvae), 13.3° (non-diapausing larvae) and 11.4° (pupae). The required heat units were: 85° (eggs), 588° (diapausing larvae), 333° (non-diapausing larvae) and 149° days (pupae). However, the observed low temperature limit for larval growth under constant temperature regimes was approximately 17°C.The critical day lengths for diapause induction observed at 25°C were: 15 h 11 min (Missouri); 15 h 20 min (Mississippi); and 15 h 22 min (Kansas). The photoperiodic response of the Mississippi larvae was more or less retained at 30°C, whereas the response of the Missouri larvae was completely suppressed at this temperature. Diapause was most easily terminated in the Kansas larvae. The most intense diapause was observed in the Mississippi larvae.Model seasonal life cycles of the three geographic populations were constructed using photothermograms. The aphid parasitoid,Aphidius ervi Haliday, overwinters in larval diapause. The possibility that the parasitoid might prefer sexual (oviparae) rather than asexual females (virginoparae) as overwintering hosts (oviparae predominate in autumn when host numbers are generally declining) was tested by comparing these aphid morphs as potential hosts. Two host species were also examined, the pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and the blackberry aphid,Sitobion fragariae (Walker). The parasitoids took longer to develop inS. fragariae than inA. pisum but the development of non-diapausingA. ervi was similar in sexual and asexual females. This observation, together with the greater variation in the duration of the different parasitoid stadia inS. fragariae, indicated that the parasitoid is specialized on the pea aphid. In photophases of 12 h and longer, the proportion ofA. ervi entering diapause inA. pisum oviparae was higher than in virginoparae. The critical daylength (where 50% of parasitoids entered diapause) was therefore longer in oviparae (12.6 h) than in virginoparae (11.7 h) with the inference that parasitoids developing in the oviparae would enter diapause earlier in the field. InS. fragariae, critical day-lengths were similar in both aphid morphs. The intensity of adult diapause in Pyrrhocoris apterus was measured in two series of experiments as the duration of pre-oviposition period at a constant temperature of 25 degrees C after transfer from short (12L:12D) to long day conditions (18L:6D). Higher diapause intensity was induced with a thermoperiod than at constant temperatures. After the induction throughout larval instars 3-5 and during 4 weeks of adult life at short days and a thermoperiod of 25/15 degrees C the pre-oviposition period was 30+/-4 and 26+/-3 days. After induction at constant 25 degrees C the pre-oviposition period was 22+/-3 and 23+/-4 days, while after induction at constant 20 degrees C it was 17+/-4 and 19+/-4 days. Induction at a lower constant temperature of 20 degrees C was thus followed by a less intense diapause than the induction at a higher constant temperature of 25 degrees C. These counterintuitive results are discussed. The oxygen consumption rate measured at experimental temperatures prior to transfer from short to long days was higher at thermoperiodic conditions than at constant temperatures and it was similar at constant 20 and 25 degrees C. Thus, the oxygen consumption rate measured prior to the transfer was highest (indication of the least intense diapause) in the insects that showed later, after the transfer to long days, the longest pre-oviposition period (indication of the most intense diapause). Within the first two days after transfer to constant 25 degrees C, oxygen consumption rate measured at 25 degrees C decreased in the thermoperiodic insects, while it transiently increased in insects from constant 20 degrees C. Two days and later after the transfer, oxygen consumption rate was similar in all groups. Cold hardiness was not correlated with diapause intensity. The low lethal temperature in diapausing insects was correlated with the night temperature during diapause induction.  相似文献

The hormonal control of the facultative diapause of the codling moth has been investigated. The diapause can be divided into 4 phases or periods: (1) diapause induction by short-day conditions (SD) in young larvae, (2) initiation of the diapause in the early last larval instar by a high titre of juvenile hormone, (3) onset and maintenance of diapause with inactivity of the neuroendocrine system, as evidenced by the results of neck-ligation experiments, (4)termination of diapause by the production of ecdysteroid.Diapause-induced larvae pupated after spinning the cocoon, if the state of induction was changed by injection with the anti-juvenile hormone precocene II at the beginning of the last larval instar and subsequent results of neck-ligation experiments, (4) termination of diapause by the production of ecdysteroid. treated with juvenile hormone during the first 1.5 days after the last larval moult and subsequently reared under SD. Under LD, continuous application of juvenile hormone during the last larval instar and after spinning did not prevent the insects from moulting to either a supernumerary larva, a pupa or a larval-pupal intermediate. Termination of diapause, i.e. pupation, was achieved by injecting diapausing larvae with 20-hydroxyecdysone. Although juvenile hormone was found to have a prothoractropic effect in diapausing larvae, no pupal moult could be induced by the application of the hormone. Contrary to the hormonal situation before pupation of nondiapausing larvae, no juvenile hormone could be detected before or during the pupation of larvae after diapause.  相似文献

The effect of daylength and temperature on the regulation of the larval diapause of a central Missouri population of the sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum, was examined. Fully grown fourth-instar larvae exhibit a facultative diapause. Measurements of the effect of photoperiod on diapause induction revealed critical photoperiods of about 13 h 30 min light/day at 20°C, and between 11 h 45 min and 12 h light/day at 23°C. Third and fourth-instar larvae were shown to be the main sensitive stages for diapause determination. Daylength was also shown to be an important regulator of the rate of diapause development. A short day of LD 10:14 h permitted only a low rate of diapause development, whereas long days of LD 14:10 h and LD 16:8 h accelerated diapause development at 25 and 30°C. When long days were alternated with short days at 30°C the accelerating effect of long days on diapause development was not found. Systematic transfers of chilled diapausing larvae revealed an accelerated diapause development in groups transferred from 10 to 30°C LD 10:14 h, but diapause development was not accelerated in groups transferred from 10 to 30°C LD 16:8 h.  相似文献

Many insects in temperate zones withstand the adverse conditions of winter through entering diapause and the two most important environmental stimuli that induce diapause are photoperiod and ambient temperature. The Large Copper butterfly, Lycaena dispar Haworth (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), is a Palearctic butterfly that hibernates as larvae. Since this butterfly is a near threatened species in some regions, there has been a growing need for a standardized protocol for mass rearing of this butterfly based on the adequate knowledge of its ecology. In the present study, we first identified that L. dispar larvae were sensitive to the photoperiodic induction of diapause during their first larval instar. We then investigated to what extent the diapause-inducing effects of photoperiod could be modified by ambient temperatures in L. dispar larvae by exposing them to the range of day-lengths (L:D 14:10, 12:12, 10:14 and 8:16) at three different temperatures (15, 20 and 25 °C). All larvae were induced to enter diapause at low ambient temperature (15 °C) regardless of photoperiod, whereas most of them (86 %) exhibited direct development when temperature was high (25 °C). The photoperiodic induction of diapause was evident when day-length was shorter than 14 h at intermediate temperature (20 °C). Pre-diapause development was prolonged at low temperatures. Finally, we found that post-diapause development of L. dispar larvae was determined by both the chilling temperature experienced by diapausing larvae and the duration of larval diapause. Adult emergence was enhanced when larvae were chilled at 8 °C and when they had been under the state of diapause for 20 days before they were treated to terminate diapause.  相似文献
