ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: In the present study, three ionic liquids, namely 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]OAc), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ([EMIM]DEP), were used to partially dissolve rice husk, after which the cellulose were regenerated by the addition of water. The aim of the investigation is to examine the implications of the ionic liquid pretreatments on rice husk composition and structure. RESULTS: From the attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform-infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results, the regenerated cellulose were more amorphous, less crystalline, and possessed higher structural disruption compared with untreated rice husk. The major component of regenerated cellulose from [BMIM]Cl and [EMIM]DEP pretreatments was cellulose-rich material, while cellulose regenerated from [EMIM]OAc was a matrix of cellulose and lignin. Cellulose regenerated from ionic pretreatments could be saccharified via enzymatic hydrolysis, and resulted in relatively high reducing sugars yields, whereas enzymatic hydrolysis of untreated rice husk did not yield reducing sugars. Rice husk residues generated from the ionic liquid pretreatments had similar chemical composition and amorphousity to that of untreated rice husk, but with varying extent of surface disruption and swelling. CONCLUSIONS: The structural architecture of the regenerated cellulose and rice husk residues showed that they could be used for subsequent fermentation or derivation of cellulosic compounds. Therefore, ionic liquid pretreatment is an alternative in the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass in addition to the conventional chemical pretreatments.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare and explore electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) for structure determination of cellulose whiskers and their nanocomposite with poly(lactic acid). From conventional bright-field transmission electron microscopy (TEM) it was possible to identify individual whiskers, which enabled determination of their sizes and shape. AFM overestimated the width of the whiskers due to the tip-broadening effect. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) allowed for a quick examination giving an overview of the sample; however, the resolution was considered insufficient for detailed information. Ultramicrotomy of nanocomposite films at cryogenic temperatures enabled detailed inspection of the cellulose whiskers in the poly(lactic acid) matrix by AFM. FESEM applied on fractured surfaces allowed insight into the morphology of the nanocomposite, although rather restricted due to the metal coating and limited resolution. Detailed information was obtained from TEM; however, this technique required staining and suffered in general from limited contrast and beam sensitivity of the material.  相似文献

Pretreatment of rice husk by alkaline peroxide assisted wet air oxidation (APAWAO) approach was investigated with the aim to enhance the enzymatic convertibility of cellulose in pretreated rice husk. Rice husk was presoaked overnight in 1% (w/v) H2O2 solution (pH adjusted to 11.5 using NaOH) (equivalent to 16.67 g H2O2 and 3.63 g NaOH per 100 g dry, untreated rice husk) at room temperature, followed by wet air oxidation (WAO). APAWAO pretreatment resulted in solubilization of 67 wt % of hemicellulose and 88 wt % of lignin initially present in raw rice husk. Some amount of oligomeric glucose (?8.3 g/L) was also observed in the APAWAO liquid fraction. APAWAO pretreatment resulted in 13‐fold increase in the amount of glucose that could be obtained from otherwise untreated rice husk. Up to 86 wt % of cellulose in the pretreated rice husk (solid fraction) could be converted into glucose within 24 hours, yielding over 21 g glucose per 100 g original rice husk. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to visualize changes in biomass structure following the APAWAO pretreatment. Enzymatic cellulose convertibility of the pretreated slurry at high dry matter loadings was also investigated. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Prog., 2011  相似文献

Heavy metals in the soil and ground water have endangered our environment and human bodies by direct or indirect pathways. Currently, bioremediation is a developing process that offers the possibility to destroy various contaminants using natural biological activity. Biopolymers are industrially attractive because of their capability of lowering transition metal ion concentrations to parts per billion, they are widely available, and they are environmentally safe. This paper deals with the preparation of an ethylamine-modified biopolymer (chitosan) and carbon from biowaste (rice husk) composite beads (EAM-CCRCB) for metal ion removal. The prepared adsorbent was used for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solutions. The activation and surface properties of the adsorbent were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. The effect of process variables such as initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dosage, and pH of the solution on the performance of percentage removal and adsorption capacity were studied. Various isotherm and kinetic models were fitted with experimental data to describe the solute interaction and nature of adsorption with the adsorbent through batch studies. Mass thermodynamic parameters were determined. Regeneration studies were attempted to check the stability and activity of the adsorbent.  相似文献

Sorption of cadmium from aqueous solution using pretreated rice husk   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The sorption of Cd(II) from aqueous solution by rice husk, a surplus agricultural byproduct was investigated. Some simple and low-cost chemical modifications resulted in increasing the sorption capacity of raw rice husk (RRH) from 8.58 mg/g to 11.12, 20.24, 16.18 mg/g and reducing the equilibrium time from 10 h of RRH to 2, 4 and 1 h for epichlorohydrin treated rice husk (ERH), NaOH treated rice husk (NRH), sodium bicarbonate treated rice husk (NCRH), respectively. The effect of pH, sorption kinetics and isotherms were studied in batch experiments. Good correlation coefficient was obtained for pseudo second-order kinetic model, which agreed with chemisorption as the rate-limiting mechanism. Sorption isotherm test showed that equilibrium sorption data were better represented by Langmuir model than the Freundlich model. The highly efficient low cost and the rapid uptake of Cd(II) by NCRH indicated that it could be an excellent alternative for the removal of heavy metal by sorption process.  相似文献

Rice husk (RH), an abundant by-product of rice milling, was used for the preparation of activated carbon (RHAC) via KOH and K(2)CO(3) chemical activation. The activation process was performed at the microwave input power of 600 W for 7 min. RHACs were characterized by low temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption behavior was examined using methylene blue as adsorbate. The K(2)CO(3)-activated sample showed higher yield and better pore structures and adsorption capacity development than the KOH-activated sample, with a BET surface area, total pore volume and monolayer adsorption capacity of 1165 m(2)/g, 0.78 cm(3)/g and 441.52 mg/g, respectively. The results revealed the feasibility of microwave heating for preparation of high surface area activated carbons from rice husks via K(2)CO(3) activation.  相似文献

A procedure for the alkaline pretreatment of sisal fiber assisted by ultrasound was optimized to obtain a higher solubilization of hemicellulose and the removal of lignin with cellulose fraction maintenance. A full factorial design 23 was used for the evaluation of the effects of the variables (sonication time, NaOH concentration, and sonication amplitude) on the pretreatment. The optimal values for the variables using the Doehlert matrix for the sonication time, NaOH concentration, and sonication amplitude were 27 min, 4.1% (m/v), and 50%, respectively. The X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy analyses, after pretreatment, showed changes in chemical structure and morphology due to the removal of 82% of hemicellulose and 86% of lignin from sisal fiber. The soft reaction conditions and relatively short times demonstrated the effectiveness of the combined action of ultrasound with alkaline pretreatment to improve the accessibility to cellulose in this important step of the ethanol production process from biomass.  相似文献

This study presents a novel, efficient and environmentally friendly process for the cooking of corn stalk that uses active oxygen (O2 and H2O2) and a recoverable solid alkali (MgO). The structural changes on the surface of corn stalk before and after cooking were characterized by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The results showed that lignin and extractives were effectively removed, especially those on the surface of corn stalk. Additionally, the changes included becoming fibrillar, the exposure of cellulose and hemi-cellulose and the pitting corrosion on the surface, etc. The results also showed that the removal reaction is from outside to inside, but the main reaction is possibly on the surface. Furthermore, the results of active oxygen cooking with a solid alkali are compared with those of alkaline cooking in the paper.  相似文献

Rice husk is one of the most abundant types of lignocellulosic biomass. Because of its significant amount of sugars, such as cellulose and hemicellulose, it can be used for the production of biofuels such as bioethanol. However, the complex structure of lignocellulosic biomass, consisting of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, is resistant to degradation, which limits biomass utilization for ethanol production. The protection of cellulose by lignin contributes to the recalcitrance of lignocelluloses to hydrolysis. Therefore, we conducted steam-explosion treatment as pretreatment of rice husk. However, recombinant Escherichia coli KO11 did not ferment the reducing sugar solution obtained by enzymatic saccharification of steam-exploded rice husk. When the steam-exploded rice husk was washed with hot water to remove inhibitory substances and M9 medium (without glucose) was used as a fermentation medium, E. coli KO11 completely fermented the reducing sugar solution obtained by enzymatic saccharification of hot water washing-treated steam-exploded rice husk to ethanol. We report here the efficient production of bioethanol using steam-exploded rice husk.  相似文献

Nanocomposites were prepared from waxy maize starch plasticized with sorbitol as the matrix and a stable aqueous suspension of tunicin whiskers-an animal cellulose-as the reinforcing phase. The composites were conditioned at different relative humidity levels. The conditioned films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, water uptake experiments, and wide-angle X-ray scattering studies. Contrarily to our previous report concerning tunicin whisker filled glycerol plasticized starch nanocomposites (Macromolecules 2000, 33, 8344), the present system exhibited a single glass-rubber transition, and no evidence of transcrystallization of amylopectin on cellulose whisker surfaces and resultant antiplasticizing effects were observed. It was found that the glass-rubber transition temperature of the plasticized amylopectin matrix first increases up a whiskers content around 10-15 wt % and then decreases. A significant increase in crystallinity was observed in the composites by increasing either moisture content or whiskers content.  相似文献

The three-dimensional morphology of native bacterial cellulose is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, it is shown by scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy with positive staining by phosphotungstic acid ions that aggregates of microfibrils of native cotton cellulose have a similar structure. The results are consistent with previous reports on microfibrils of algal cellulose. These observations exclude a simple spinneret process as a mechanism of formation of the microfibrils of these sources of cellulose.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the spines decorating the cladodes of the cactus Opuntia ficus-indica was investigated by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, wide angle X-ray, and solid state 13C NMR analyses. Each spine consisted of a compact parallel arrangement of slender cellulosic fibers (0.4 mm in length and 6-10 microm in diameter) with small lumens. The fibers were disencrusted by alkali and sodium chlorite bleaching, yielding a remarkable arabinan-cellulose (1:1) product. X-ray fiber diagrams of the spines before and after purification confirmed the presence of crystalline cellulose domains with molecular axis parallel to the spine axis. CP-MAS 13C T1 NMR data showed a strong interaction at a nanometric level of a fraction of the arabinan and the cellulose crystalline domains. By sequential hydrothermal extractions, followed by a trifluoroacetic acid treatment, a relatively pure cellulose was isolated while the extracted fibers became fibrillated into slender microfibrils having no more than 4-6 nm diameter. The hydrothermal extract yielded the alpha-L-arabinofuranan consisting of a chain of (1-->5)-linked L-arabinosyl residues with branching either at C-2 or C-3 or at both C-2 and C-3. Taken together, these observations suggest that the bulk of the spine fibers consists of an intimate composite of cellulose microfibrils embedded in an arabinan matrix.  相似文献

Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) signaling is known to play an important role during cutaneous development. To elucidate the role of FGF10 during whisker formation, we examined the expression of Fgf10 in normal developing whiskers and phenotypes of Fgf10-deficient whiskers. Fgf10 is first expressed in the maxillary process, lateral and medial nasal processes, then in the mesenchymal cells underneath the future whisker placodes, and in the surrounding mesenchyme of developing whiskers. Fgf10-null whiskers exhibit a significant decrease in number and their structure is disorganized as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Hair follicle marker genes such as Sonic hedgehog, Patched, and Patched 2 are aberrantly expressed in the mutant whiskers. Thus, FGF10 is required for proper whisker development mediated by SHH signaling in the mouse.  相似文献

Fungal laccases in the presence of mediators are powerful biocatalysts to degrade lignin. Pycnoporus cinnabarinus laccase and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) have been successfully used to delignify eucalypt kraft pulp once integrated in a totally chlorine-free bleaching sequence. Real time delignification of kraft pulp by laccase-HBT was verified in situ by monitoring the loss of lignin autofluorescence during the enzymatic treatment using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The highest delignification of pulp fibers occurred over a very short time-span (5 min). Moreover, we demonstrate the removal of sterols, responsible for pitch deposits in hardwood kraft pulps, as an additional effect of laccase-HBT. Spherical structures between pulp fibers localized by low temperature scanning electron microscopy were removed by laccase-HBT. The use of filipin, a specific stain, revealed the sterol nature of many of these structures. At the end of the enzyme-aided bleaching sequence, the fluorescent sterols-filipin signals were almost completely absent.  相似文献

Cellulose whiskers are increasingly being used as a reinforcing phase in polymer systems and their use is a growing area of importance in bionanocomposite research. Although the reinforcing effect of cellulose whiskers has been studied in various polymers, the impact of crosslinking cellulose whiskers has not been explored so far. This work deals with the development of novel cellulose nanocomposites, wherein the cellulose nanowhiskers are crosslinked with poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) and poly(ethylene glycol). The morphology of the nanocomposite was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), which revealed a network structure embedded in a continuous phase. The water sorption studies demonstrated that the crosslinked nanocomposites are capable of absorbing up to ~900% water and have potential to be used as hydrogels.  相似文献

This paper presents a green and cost‐effective recipe for the synthesis of blue‐emitting ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) using cellulose bio‐templates. Azadirachta indica (neem) leaf extract prepared in different solvents were used as biological templates to produce nanostructures of wurtzite ZnO with a particle size ~12–36 nm. A cellulose‐driven capping mechanism is used to describe the morphology of ZnO NPs. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra‐red (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL) studies showed that solvents affect the growth process and the capping mechanism of bio‐template severely. Structural changes in ZnO NPs were evident with variation in pH, dielectric constants (DC) and boiling points (BP) of solvents. Furthermore, an energy band model is proposed to explain the origin of the blue emission in the as‐obtained ZnO NPs. PL excitation studies and the theoretical enthalpy values of individual defects were used to establish the association between the interstitial‐zinc‐related defect levels and the blue emission. The shape and size distribution of crystalline nanoparticles resulting from the sulfuric acid hydrolysis of cellulose from cotton, Avicel, and tunicate were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS). Images of negatively stained and cryo-TEM specimens showed that the majority of cellulose particles were flat objects constituted by elementary crystallites whose lateral adhesion was resistant against hydrolysis and sonication treatments. Moreover, tunicin whiskers were described as twisted ribbons with an estimated pitch of 2.4-3.2 microm. Length and width distributions of all samples were generally well described by log-normal functions, with the exception of tunicin, which had less lateral aggregation. AFM observation confirmed that the thickness of the nanocrystals was almost constant for a given origin and corresponded to the crystallite size measured from peak broadening in WAXS spectra. Experimental SAXS profiles were numerically simulated, combining the dimensions and size distribution functions determined by the various techniques.  相似文献

Azo dyes are commonly generated as effluent pollutants by dye using industries, causing contamination of surface and ground water. Various strategies are employed to treat such wastewater; however, a multi-faceted treatment strategy could be more effective for complete removal of azo dyes from industrial effluent than any single treatment. In the present study, rice husk material was used as a substratum in two constructed wetlands (CWs) and augmented with microorganisms in the presence of wetland plants to effectively treat dye-polluted water. To evaluate the efficiency of each process the study was divided into three levels, i.e., adsorption of dye onto the substratum, phytoremediation within the CW and then bioremediation along with the previous two processes in the augmented CW. The adsorption process was helpful in removing 50% dye in presence of rice husk while 80% in presence of rice husk biocahr. Augmentation of microorganisms in CW systems has improved dye removal efficiency to 90%. Similarly presence of microorganisms enhanced removal of total nitrogen (68% 0 and Total phosphorus (75%). A significant improvement in plant growth was also observed by measuring plant height, number of leaves and leave area. These findings suggest the use of agricultural waste as part of a CW substratum can provide enhanced removal of textile dyes.  相似文献
