Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a multipurpose tree native to the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asian countries. Products derived from neem have been used for centuries, particularly in India, for medicinal and pest-management purposes. Azadirachtin and neem oil are the two major commercially important products derived from the tree. The oil contains palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids in good proportion. Although there is growing demand for quality planting material for plantation of neem, efforts are lacking for the selection of neem trees based on their biochemical composition. In the present study, 60 Neem seed samples were collected from different provinances of the Rajasthan state in India. These samples were analysed by GLC to study the variability of fatty acid composition. Significant variability in individual fatty acids was observed. The palmitic acid ranged from 16 to 34%, stearic acid from 6 to 24%, oleic acid from 25 to 58% and linoleic acid from 6 to 17%. This variability can be exploited for selection of trees and for studying the genetic variability in neem. These selections can also be utilized for genetic improvement of the tree.  相似文献

Emerging evidence indicates that angiogenesis and immunosuppression frequently occur simultaneously in response to diverse stimuli. Here, we describe a fundamental biological programme that involves the activation of both angiogenesis and immunosuppressive responses, often through the same cell types or soluble factors. We suggest that the initiation of these responses is part of a physiological and homeostatic tissue repair programme, which can be co-opted in pathological states, notably by tumours. This view can help to devise new cancer therapies and may have implications for aseptic tissue injury, pathogen-mediated tissue destruction, chronic inflammation and even reproduction.  相似文献

Connexins are chordate gap junction channel proteins that, by enabling direct communication between the cytosols of adjacent cells, create a unique cell signalling network. Gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) has important roles in controlling cell growth and differentiation and in tissue development and homeostasis. Moreover, several non-canonical connexin functions unrelated to GJIC have been discovered. Of the 21 members of the human connexin family, connexin 43 (Cx43) is the most widely expressed and studied. The long cytosolic C-terminus (CT) of Cx43 is subject to extensive post-translational modifications that modulate its intracellular trafficking and gap junction channel gating. Moreover, the Cx43 CT contains multiple domains involved in protein interactions that permit crosstalk between Cx43 and cytoskeletal and regulatory proteins. These domains endow Cx43 with the capacity to affect cell growth and differentiation independently of GJIC. Here, we review the current understanding of the regulation and unique functions of the Cx43 CT, both as an essential component of full-length Cx43 and as an independent signalling hub. We highlight the complex regulatory and signalling networks controlled by the Cx43 CT, including the extensive protein interactome that underlies both gap junction channel-dependent and -independent functions. We discuss these data in relation to the recent discovery of the direct translation of specific truncated forms of Cx43. Gibberellins (GAs) are endogenous hormones controlling numerous aspects of plant growth and development. Our present understanding of GA physiology is based largely on genetic analysis in model plants such as Arabidopsis. In spite of the success of this approach, the discovery of additional physiological roles for GAs in seed development, pollen tube growth and meristem development indicates that the existing collection of GA-related mutants (identified partially or entirely on the basis of vegetative phenotypes) has failed to uncover all aspects of plant development that are controlled by GAs. The continued use of ever improving forward and reverse genetic techniques is expected to lead to the discovery of further novel roles for GAs in plant development.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper explores issues of belonging and agency among asylum seekers and refugee women of African origin in the UK. It discusses the ways these women engendered resistance in their everyday life to destitution, lack of cultural recognition, and gender inequality through the foundation of their own non-governmental organization, African Women's Empowerment Forum, AWEF, a collective ‘home’ space.

The focus of this account is on migrant women's agency and self-determination for the exercise of choice to be active actors in society. It points to what might be an important phenomenon on how local grassroots movements are challenging the invisibility of asylum seekers’ and refugees’ lives and expanding the notion of politics to embrace a wider notion of community politics with solidarity.

AWEF is the embodiment of a social space that resonates the ‘in-between’ experience of migrant life providing stability to the women members regarding political and community identification.  相似文献

Intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli are a major cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. Currently seven intestinal pathovars are recognized causing a wide range of intestinal disorders that are sometimes associated with severe and even lethal complications. The arsenal of virulence factors is used to subvert cellular functions of the host thereby enhancing adaptation, virulence and pathogenicity. Virulence factor profiles are largely the result of the acquisition of mobile genetic elements such as prophages and pathogenicity islands. A group of highly adapted intestinal pathogenic E. coli that are characterized by the induction of ‘attaching‐and‐effacing (A/E) lesions’ have acquired a decisive pathogenicity island, the ‘locus of enterocyte effacement – LEE’ by horizontal gene transfer. This review focuses on recent advances in our understanding of A/E E. coli. It highlights novel functions of effector proteins, addresses the LEE flanking regions where additional genetic elements such as the LifA/Efa1 region have been identified, and points to implications for diagnostics and therapy due to the putative interconversion of A/E E. coli during infection.  相似文献

The reaction centre (RC) of green sulphur bacteria is a FeS-type RC, as are the RCs of Photosystems I (PS I) of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms and of heliobacteria. The core domains of both green sulphur bacterial and heliobacterial RCs are considered to be homodimeric, in contrast to those of purple bacteria, PS I and Photosystem II (PS II). This paper briefly describes the techniques of electron microscopy and image processing suited to investigate the structure of these proteins. Recent advances in the study of the structure of the green sulphur bacterial RC, primarily achieved by the application of scanning transmission electron microscopy, are reviewed.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Bhats are low-status bards from the Indian state of Rajasthan. This paper explores a Bhat puppet drama sponsored by a state-run bank meant to teach Indians an ethic of saving and planning for the future. Specifically, it examines the manner in which Bhats sabotage their work for the bank, mocking the values they are hired to promote and thus ‘resisting’ modernist ideologies that purportedly allow for the rational management of time. Still, Bhat dramas are not only conventional political weapons that turn the world upside-down, but also poetic devices that potentially raise the consciousness of audience members so that they themselves might resist. In fact, this play, in the manner it speaks truth to power and thus teaches others to resist in thought or action, resembles the Bhats' traditional praise-work for their formerly Untouchable patrons. I therefore suggest that the Bhats' ‘subaltern consciousness,’ like their insights into the discursive construction of modern authority, is tightly intertwined with local performance traditions.  相似文献

In-source pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometry (Py-FIMS), in combination with complementary elemental, wet-chemical, biochemical, and microbiological data, has been used to characterize humus composition and dynamics in soil samples from several field plots that have been cultivated in long-term experiments under different management conditions. Thermograms and Py-FI mass spectra of whole-soil samples from field plots that under very different management show significant differences in humus composition, which may be due to varying stages of decomposition of plant residues and humus genesis. The intensity of soil management significantly affects high-molecular-weight subunits such as dimeric lignin0, arylalkyl-, and aliphatic constituents, even though humus quantity is similar for plots under more practically oriented management, such as crop rotation. The differences in molecular humus subunits of soil samples from different plots, in combination with complementary data, demonstrated that less parent (i.e. primary) material is incorporated in the humus matrix under intense soil management conditions. Samples from different field plots can thus be objectively differentiated on the basis of humus properties using multivariate statistical techniques such as principal component and cluster analyses. This statistical discrimination, using Py-FI mass spectra of the samples, corresponds well with microbial biomasses but is somewhat inconsistent with elemental data and results of chemical degradation procedures. The microflora populations in soils under intense management are limited by low availability and/or quality of carbon substrates. The resulting restricted internal nitrogen cycle causes those soils to have a reduced capacity to immobilize N, leading to relative enrichment of heterocyclic nitrogen compounds that are resistant to mineralization.  相似文献

Three decades of feminist academic work have led to claims about its maturity and “coming of age”. This article offers a critical evaluation of feminism’s success, particularly in the context of “race” and ethnicity awareness. Feminism has challenged mainstream thought by making women and gender central concerns, by opening up new fields for study and by breaking down disciplinary barriers. However, the global hegemony of Western feminism means that the range of women’s issues tends to be narrowly and parochially conceived. Women of different ethnicities have had an uphill struggle to redefine feminist terms, benchmarks and understandings. One particular difficulty involves the use of ideas and concepts which are not easily translated into English. Drawing on debates between Western women and Islamist feminists, the article explores some of the problems in understanding terminologies and deciphering definitions about cultures and languages. It argues that the views of non-Western and ethnic minority women must be moved from margin to centre stage.  相似文献

Reaction centres of photosynthesis isolated from the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis by a single step of molecular sieve chromatography were crystallized. The isolated and the crystallized reaction centres contain four different protein subunits, including a membrane-bound cytochrome. Crystallization was achieved by salt precipitation using 2 to 3 m-ammonium sulphate as a precipitating agent in the presence of N,N-dimethyldodecylamine N-oxide as detergent and heptane-1,2,3-triol. Large tetragonal crystals of space group P41212 or its enantiomorph diffracting to beyond 2.5 Å were obtained.  相似文献

While the crocodyliform lineage extends back over 200 million years (Myr) to the Late Triassic, modern forms-members of Eusuchia-do not appear until the Cretaceous. Eusuchia includes the crown group Crocodylia, which comprises Crocodyloidea, Alligatoroidea and Gavialoidea. Fossils of non-crocodylian eusuchians are currently rare and, in most instances, fragmentary. Consequently, the transition from Neosuchia to Crocodylia has been one of the most poorly understood areas of crocodyliform evolution. Here we describe a new crocodyliform from the mid-Cretaceous (98-95 Myr ago; Albian-Cenomanian) Winton Formation of Queensland, Australia, as the most primitive member of Eusuchia. The anatomical changes associated with the emergence of this taxon indicate a pivotal shift in the feeding and locomotor behaviour of crocodyliforms-a shift that may be linked to the subsequent rapid diversification of Eusuchia 20 Myr later during the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary. While Laurasia (in particular North America) is the most likely ancestral area for Crocodylia, the biogeographic events associated with the origin of Eusuchia are more complex. Although the fossil evidence is limited, it now seems likely that at least part of the early history of Eusuchia transpired in Gondwana.  相似文献

There are many parallels between hybridity theory, especially as it has been developed in the work of Bhabha, and theories of liminality in anthropology, particularly in the work of Turner and Douglas. These share a stress on sited performance and the specific positioning of actors. However, the stress in hybridity theory on the colonial encounter as the source of reflexivity and double consciousness does not engage, I argue, with the fact that cultures produce their own indigenous forms of transgression and hence also of critical reflexivity and satire: ritual clowns, carnivals, poetry, and the like. Moreover, while transgression is a potential tool of resistance which upturns taken-for-granted hierarchies, it plays dangerously on the boundary and, taken out of context, can become a source of offence, especially for postcolonial diasporas struggling for recognition. This raises the question: what are the creative limits of cultural hybridity?.  相似文献

 The major role of electrostatic effects in the control of redox potentials in proteins is now widely appreciated. However, the evaluation and conceptualization of the actual electrostatic contributions is far from trivial, and some models still overlook the nature of electrostatic effects in proteins. This commentary considers different contributions to redox potentials of proteins and discusses the ability of different models to capture these contributions. It is pointed out that macroscopic models which consider the protein as a medium of uniform low dielectric constant cannot reproduce the proper physics of redox proteins. In particular, it is pointed out that the crucial effects of the protein permanent dipoles must be taken into account explicitly and that these permanent dipoles involve effective dielectric constants that are different from those for ionized residues. It is also argued that the reorganization of the protein upon change of oxidation states or ionization of protein residues should be taken into account in redox calculations. The role of water penetration and the inadequacy of describing electrostatic effects by solvent accessibility is briefly mentioned. The nature and the meaning of the "dielectric constant" that should be used in redox calculations are also discussed. It is pointed out that the "dielectric constant" εp used in current discretized continuum (DC) models is simply a representation of the contributions which are treated implicitly and not the proper dielectric constant of the protein. It is then explained that the need to use a large "dielectric constant" in DC models reflects, among other factors, the implicit representation of the reorganization of permanent dipoles, and that even an explicit treatment of the fluctuations of ionized surface residues will lead to incorrect results when one uses εp=εˉ in continuum treatments. Finally, it is suggested that although the discussion and classification of different contributions to redox potentials is very useful, only the evaluation of the totality of the protein contributions (rather than an arbitrary subset) can lead to a quantitative understanding of redox proteins.
