To elucidate characteristics of gunshot residues in gunshot entry wounds with full-jacketed and lead bullets, element contents in entry gunshot wounds and control skins were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). It was found that a high content of Fe and Zn was deposited in the gunshot entry wounds with full-jacketed bullet, whereas a high content of Pb was deposited in the gunshot entry wounds with lead (unjacked) bullet. It should be noted that the content of Pb was significantly higher in the gunshot entry wounds with lead bullet than in those with full-jacketed bullet. Regarding the relationships among elements, it was found that there were significant direct correlations between Pb and either Sb or Ba contents in both gunshot entry wounds with full-jacketed and lead bullets. As Pb increased in both gunshot entry wounds, Sb and Ba also increased in the wounds.  相似文献

Workers decommissioning the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant damaged from the Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami are at risk of injury with possible contamination from radioactive heavy atoms including actinides, such as plutonium. We propose a new methodology for on-site and rapid evaluation of heavy-atom contamination in wounds using a portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) device. In the present study, stable lead was used as the model contaminant substitute for radioactive heavy atoms. First, the wound model was developed by placing a liquid blood phantom on an epoxy resin wound phantom contaminated with lead. Next, the correlation between the concentration of contaminant and the XRF peak intensity was formulated considering the thickness of blood exiting the wound. Methods to determine the minimum detection limit (MDL) of contaminants at any maximal equivalent dose to the wound by XRF measurement were also established. For example, in this system, at a maximal equivalent dose of 16.5 mSv to the wound and blood thickness of 0.5 mm, the MDL value for lead was 1.2 ppm (3.1 nmol). The radioactivity of 239Pu corresponding to 3.1 nmol is 1.7 kBq, which is lower than the radioactivity of 239Pu contaminating puncture wounds in previous severe accidents. In conclusion, the established methodology could be beneficial for future development of a method to evaluate plutonium contamination in wounds. Highlights: Methodology for evaluation of heavy-atom contamination in a wound was established. A portable X-ray fluorescence device enables on-site, rapid and direct evaluation. Representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of low-medium molecular weight were determined using headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (HS-SPME-GC-FID) in ten surface soil samples from Gipuzkoa (Northern Spain). The sum of the PAHs ranged from 0.21 to 136.26 mg kg?1. Pyrene and chrysene were the most abundant detected PAHs with an average concentration around 3.1 mg kg?1. Pearson's correlation and PAH isomer ratios were applied to study the different origins of contamination. The results indicated that the PAH contamination in the studied area was a mixed pattern of pyrolytic and petrogenic inputs. Multivariate exploratory techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis (CA) were also applied corroborating the PAH compounds patterns in the soils.  相似文献

Spatial distribution patterns of arsenic (As) in the tissues of a lesser-known As hyperaccumulating fern Pityrogramma calomelanos (L.) Link var. austroamericana (Domin) Farw. (Pteridaceae) have been studied. Quantitative micro-proton-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) spectroscopy was employed to examine As localization in pinnule and stipe cross-sections of this species. In addition, As hyperaccumulation status of P. calomelanos var. austroamericana was compared with the well-known As hyperaccumulating fern Pteris vittata L. Both species were grown in pots under controlled conditions and exposed to four levels of As (0–500 mg As kg−1) for 20 weeks. Pityrogramma calomelanos var. austroamericana accumulated up to 16 415 mg As kg−1 dry weight (DW), however, phytotoxicity symptoms such as necrotic pinnule tips and margins, appeared in fronds with concentrations >3,008 mg As kg−1 DW. Arsenic was readily translocated to fronds, with concentrations up to 75 times greater in fronds than in roots. Quantitative elemental maps of As generated using micro-PIXE analysis revealed that As concentrations in pinnule cross-sections were higher than in stipe cross-sections with concentrations of 3.7 × 103 and 1.6 × 103 mg As kg−1 DW, respectively (as determined by region selection analysis; RSA). In pinnules, RSA revealed variable concentrations of As, however did not resolve a clear pattern of compartmentalization across different anatomical regions. In stipe tissues, As concentrations followed the order vascular bundle > cortex > epidermis (as determined by RSA). Our results show that P. calomelanos var. austroamericana is an As hyperaccumulator and has the potential for use in phytoremediation of soils with low levels (up to 50 mg kg−1) of As contamination.  相似文献

Methylamines are frequently present in high concentrations in biological samples, but their separation and quantification are difficult. Data presented show that methylamines commonly occurring in biological material can be uniquely identified and quantified by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy by recording spectra at both neutral and acid pH. Use of a high sensitivity probe permits this analysis even in the presence of high water concentrations, allowing accurate quantification with minimum preparative technique. The method was tested on tissues of the dogfish. Trimethylamine oxide was found in amounts ranging from 42 mmol kg−1 fresh weight in liver, up to 115 mmol kg−1 fresh weight in heart. Betaine was found to range from 10 mmol kg−1 fresh weight in liver to 49 mmol kg−1 fresh weight in brain. Creatine was not found in heart or liver, but was present in body wall muscle and in brain. Further analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography allowed determination of urea/methylamine ratios, which ranged from 1.9 in liver to 3.7 in body wall muscle. In this paper, activity concentrations of radiocesium in mushrooms from various locations in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in the years 2000–2004 are presented. Summary reports of Czech regulatory bodies have judged the average activity concentrations in mushrooms to be remarkably below the maximum permissible level of contamination. However, there are certain regions where radiocesium activities have approached the maximum permissible level for contamination of basic foodstuff. For example, the highest activity concentration of 137Cs measured by gamma-spectrometry was 2,263 Bq kg−1 (on a dry mass basis), in Xerocomus badius from Staré Ransko (a locality in the Czech-Moravian Highlands, Czech Republic). The highest activity concentration of 137Cs measured in Slovakia was 966 Bq kg−1 (on a dry mass basis), for Suillus luteus from Senica. For comparison, the corresponding activity concentration in a sample taken within the 30 km zone around Chernobyl was measured to be 6,000 Bq kg−1 (on a dry mass basis). Our results have also demonstrated remarkably lower activity concentrations of 137Cs in Slovakia compared to those in the Czech Republic.  相似文献

Cl-36 is an important component of nuclear waste. The concentrations of stable chlorine (Cl) in pig and cow tissues were measured to provide information which can be used to parameterize models of 36Cl transfer into agricultural animals. The concentration of stable Cl in cows’ milk was 1.0 ± 0.2 g L−1, in cow muscle it was 0.7 ± 0.2 g kg−1 wet mass (wm) and in pig muscle 0.4 ± 0.1 g kg−1 wm. The concentration of stable Cl in cow and pig liver was 0.9 ± 0.3 g kg−1 wm, which was about two-fold higher than that in the kidney and lung. Due to homeostatic control, stable Cl concentrations in animal tissues are not related to the amount ingested daily in herbage at intake rates in the normal physiological range of up to 188 g day−1 for cows and up to 40 g day−1 for pigs. Therefore, the commonly used transfer coefficient is not suitable for use in quantifying the transfer of 36Cl to milk and meat. Since the metabolism of stable Cl and 36Cl in an animal’s body is identical, the average equilibrium ratios of 36Cl to stable Cl in the daily ration (36Cl (g kg−1)/Cl (g kg−1)) and animal tissues will be the same. We therefore conclude that the average equilibrium Cl isotopic ratio in the dietary daily intake should be used to predict the contamination of meat and milk with 36Cl.  相似文献

To study wound ballistics of the mandibular angle, a combined hexahedral-tetrahedral finite element (FE) model of the pig mandible was developed to simulate ballistic impact. An experimental study was carried out by measuring impact load parameters from 14 fresh pig mandibles that were shot at the mandibular angle by a standard 7.62 mm M43 bullet. FE analysis was executed through the LS-DYNA code under impact loads similar to those obtained from the experimental study. The resulting residual velocity, the transferred energy from the bullet to the mandible, and the surface area of the entrance wound had no statistical differences between the FE simulation and the experimental study. However, the mean surface area of the exit wounds in the experimental study was significantly larger than that in the simulation. According to the FE analysis, the stress concentrated zones were mainly located at the region of impact, condylar neck, coronoid process and mandibular body. The simulation results also indicated that trabecular bone had less stress concentration and a lower speed of stress propagation compared with cortical bone. The FE model is appropriate and conforms to the basic principles of wound ballistics. This modeling system will be helpful for further investigations of the biomechanical mechanisms of wound ballistics.  相似文献

Transmission of pinewood nematode through Monochamus carolinensis oviposition wounds was documented. Nematode transmission was measured as the average number of nematodes isolated per oviposition wound excavated and also as the percentage of oviposition wounds from which nematodes were isolated. The influence of three factors that might affect nematode transmission was investigated: age of the beetle vector, number of nematodes carried per beetle, and egg deposition in the oviposition wound. Only the number of nematodes carried by the beetle was found to have a significant effect on transmission. Nematodes were transmitted more frequently and in slightly greater numbers by beetles carrying more nematodes. The influence of pinewood on nematode exit from beetles were investigated by comparing nematode exit from beetles placed over pine chips with those placed over distilled water. Nematodes exited in greater numbers and at a higher frequency from beetles over pine chips than from beetles over distilled water. Apparently, the nematodes are able to detect a factor from the pine chips that promotes their exit from the beetles.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface urban soils of Shenyang in Northeastern China were investigated. The total concentration of the PAHs ranged from 0.09 to 8.35 mg kg?1, with an average value of 1.51 ± 1.64 mg kg?1. 3–5-ring PAHs accounted for 90% of total PAHs. The functional areas, such as the industrial regions (4.95 mg kg?1) and main roads (1.56 mg kg?1), as well as the administrative divisions, including the districts of Shenhe (1.49 mg kg?1), Heping (2.08 mg kg?1), and Tiexi (2.14 mg kg?1), were heavily polluted by PAHs. The diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA) for PAHs indicate that the pollutants probably originated primarily from coal combustion and petroleum sources. The Nemerow composite index, used to assess environmental quality, shows that the soil samples were heavily polluted with PAHs, and although 52.8% of the soil sampling sites were safe, 47.2% of the soil sampling sites registered different grades of PAH pollution. The PAH contamination in Shenyang emphasizes the need for controlling fossil fuel combustion and traffic exhaust.  相似文献

Artificially inseminated eggs of feral North Sea whiting (Merlangius merlangus) were incubated in the laboratory in order to determine reproductive success. After incubation, two measures for reproductive success, total hatch and viable hatch, were determined and correlated with chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in the respective ovaries. From their specific toxicities and the sum of all determined chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminants, a contamination factor (CF) was calculated. Significant negative correlations were found between total hatch and DDT, including its metabolites (ΣDDT), dieldrin and the CF. ΣDDT and the CF were also negatively correlated with viable hatch. A threshold value of ovary contamination above which impairment of reproductive success was likely to occur was set at > 200 μg kg−1 wet wt. for ΣPCB, > 20 μg kg−1 wet wt. for ΣDDT and > 10 μg kg−1 wet wt. for dieldrin.  相似文献

The Black Sea as a whole is subject to considerable anthropogenic and natural pressures, and these can be intensified in enclosed Bays such as those around the city of Sevastopol. The overall biological status of Sevastopol Bay has improved considerably in the last 30 years or so. The number of macrobenthic species in the Bay has increased from just over 20 in 1973 to around 70 in 2000, and there have been similar enrichments in abundance, in biomass and in diversity (H′). The same pattern is shown in other locations such as the Southern Bay (the most highly polluted of the embayments) from which macrofauna were completely absent in 1976 and 1982. Over the same period oil hydrocarbons in sediments of the Southern Bay have actually increased from 8760 mg kg−1 in 1976 to 12,020 mg kg−1 in 2002, while the levels in the open sea sediments have decreased slightly over the same period (450 mg kg−1 and 280 mg kg−1, respectively). Moreover, this pattern of biological improvement is also seen outside the Bay, suggesting a common factor in the changes. Since the effect of the local factors (i.e. pollution) can be readily seen in the gradient of biological response among sites, yet they have not significantly changed over the period of study, the overall improvement must involve some over-arching driver such as climatic influences. This study investigated the influence of mound-building termites on soil particle dynamics on the land surface and in soil-forming processes by examining the amount of soil particles in mound structures of Macrotermes bellicosus in a highly weathered Ultisol of tropical savanna. Soil particle turnover via the mounds was estimated using particle stock data and soil turnover data from previous studies. A 4-ha study plot with six mounds of relatively uniform shape and size was investigated. Soil mass constituting the mounds was 6,166 ± 1,581 kg mound−1 within which the mound wall and nest body accounted for 5,002 ± 1,289 and 1,164 ± 293 kg, respectively. The mound wall contained a significantly larger amount of clay (252 ± 9.97 g kg−1) balanced with a lower sand content (676 ± 26.5 g kg−1) than in the adjacent surface (Ap1) horizon, (46.4 ± 12.8 g clay kg−1; 866 ± 83.2 g sand kg−1); the nest body had much higher clay content (559 ± 51.0 g kg−1) but less sand (285 ± 79.2 g kg−1) than the mound wall. As a result, the mounds of M. bellicosus accumulated clay of 2,874 ± 781 kg ha−1 (corresponding to 2.52% of clay stock in the Ap1 horizon) along with an estimated clay turnover rate of 169 kg ha−1 year−1. These findings suggest a positive feedback effect from termite mound-building activity on soil particle dynamics in tropical savanna ecosystems: M. bellicosus preferentially use subsoil material for mound construction, resulting in relocation of illuvial clay in the subsoil to the land surface where clay eluviation from the surface soil and its illuviation in the subsoil are major soil-forming processes.  相似文献

Summary Capture by angling was used to induce burst exercise in northern pike. By 3 h after exercise blood lactate had risen to levels of 15.2 mmol l−1 (Fig. 2), which greatly exceeded the maximum post-exercise levels (4.0 mmol l−1) previously reported for muskellunge, a close relative of pike. White muscle lactate level was high, 41.8 mmol kg−1, immediately after capture but declined to 23.2 mmol kg−1 by 6 h (Fig. 2). Blood glucose level more than doubled after exercise and remained elevated even after 96 h of recovery (Fig. 2). During the first 6 h after angling, pike disposed of 9.57 mmol (861 mg) of lactate per kg body weight. A whole body metabolic rate of 153 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 is sufficient to account for this rate of lactate removal through oxidation (Table 3). However, the metabolic rate of the highly oxidative organs and tissues (red muscle, gills, liver, kidney, heart, and spleen) must be very high (>1,000 mg O2 kg−1 h−1) to oxidize even 60% of the lactate that disappeared from pike after exercise (Fig. 5). La Paz Bay and La Paz Lagoon are water bodies of the Gulf of California that are influenced by waste water discharges from the City of La Paz and from activities of the phosphorite mining company “Rofomex”. Because seaweeds concentrate elements from the water and are used as effective indicators of contamination by metals, we investigated their usefulness in this region. Concentrations of certain major elements (Ca, Fe, K and Na) and trace elements (As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sr, Ta, Th, U, Zn and Zr) were determined in 12 species of seaweeds from La Paz Bay and La Paz Lagoon using instrumental neutron activation analysis. The contents of trace elements of environmental importance (As, Co, Cr, Fe, Sb, Se and Zn) in all studied samples are within the range of typical levels for a pristine environment not subjected to anthropogenic impact. Somewhat higher concentrations of Cr (81mg kg−1), Hf (4mg kg−1), Rb (48mg kg−1), Sc (6.3mg kg−1), Ta (0.95mg kg−1), Th (6.8mg kg−1), U (33mg kg−1) and Zn (90mg kg−1) were found in the green seaweed species Ulva (formerly Enteromorpha) intestinalis, whereas such elements as As (77mg kg−1), Sb (1.4mg kg−1) and Se (1.8mg kg−1) were mainly concentrated in the species Sargassum sinicola, Codium cuneatum and Padina mexicana respectively. Because of their higher abundance and heterogeneity in elemental composition the seaweeds species Ulva intestinalis and Caulerpa sertularioides seem to be more suitable for further biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution of the coastal waters in this zone.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) and energy (E) requirements of the phyllostomid fruit bat, Artibeus jamaicensis, and the pteropodid fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus, were measured in adults that were fed on four experimental diets. Mean daily food intake by A. jamaicensis and R. aegyptiacus ranged from 1.1–1.6 times body mass and 0.8–1.0 times body mass, respectively. Dry matter digestibility and metabolizable E coefficient were high (81.1% and 82.4%, respectively) for A. jamaicensis and (77.5% and 78.0%, respectively) for R. aegyptiacus. Across the four diets, bats maintained constant body mass with mean metabolizable E intakes ranging from 1357.3 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 to 1767.3 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 for A. jamaicensis and 1282.6–1545.2 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 for R. aegyptiacus. Maintenance E costs were high, in the order of 3.6–5.4 times the basal metabolic rate (BMR). It is unlikely that the E intakes that we observed represent a true measure of maintenance E requirements. All evidence seems to indicate that fruit bats are E maximizers, ingesting more E than required and regulating storage by adjusting metabolic output. We suggest that true maintenance E requirements are substantially lower than what we observed. If it follows the eutherian norm of two times the BMR, fruit bats must necessarily over-ingest E on low-N fruit diet. Dietary E content did affect N metabolism of A. jamaicensis. On respective low- and high-E diets, metabolic fecal N were 0.492 mg N · g−1 and 0.756 mg N · g−1 dry matter intake and endogenous urinary N losses were 163.31 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1 and 71.54 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1. A. jamaicensis required 332.3 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 and 885.3 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 of total N on high- and low-E diets, respectively, and 213.7 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 of truly digestible N to achieve N balance. True N digestibilities were low (29% and 49%) for low- and high-E diets, respectively. For R. aegyptiacus, metabolic fecal N and endogenous urinary N losses were 1.27 mg N · g−1 dry matter intake and 96.0 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1, respectively, and bats required 529.8 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 (total N) or 284.0 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 (truly digestible N). True N digestibility was relatively low (50%). Based on direct comparison, we found no evidence that R. aegyptiacus exhibits a greater degree of specialization in digestive function and N retention than A. jamaicensis. When combined with results from previous studies, our results indicate that all fruit bats appear to be specialized in their ability to retain N when faced with low N diet. By means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry, concentrations of more than 2500 mg kg–1 Pb, 150 mg kg–1 Zn, and 320 mg kg–1 Cd could be detected in the intestine tissues of diplopods from a lead and silver smelter's spoil bank. While only small portions of the ingested lead and cadmium are absorbed in the midgut of these diplopods, the zinc uptake into the midgut epithelium reaches 33.8–37.5% of the zinc content in the food pulp when the animals were contaminated acutely. However, after long-term contamination with zinc, absorption and excretion of this metal balanced one another. Absorbed lead and cadmium are predominantly stored in the midgut cells of the diplopods; unspecific precipitation of heavy metal showed the spherites of the resorptive epithelial cells to be the main accumulation sites. Zinc is for the most part localized in or near the cuticle; electron energy loss spectroscopy and ESI electron spectroscopic imaging, however, showed this metal to be present also in the spherites of the midgut's resorption cells. These spherites are assigned to belong to the type A granule group since (i) they are concentrically structured, (ii) they are shown to contain great amounts of calcium and (iii) copper, a class B metal, could not be detected in these deposits.  相似文献

Accurate regulation of dermal fibroblast function plays a crucial role in wound healing. Many fibrotic diseases are characterized by a failure to conclude normal tissue repair and the persistence of fibroblasts inside lesions. In the present study we demonstrate that endoglin haploinsufficiency promotes fibroblast accumulation during wound healing. Moreover, scars from endoglin-heterozygous (Eng+/−) mice show persisting fibroblasts 12 days after wounding, which could lead to a fibrotic scar. Endoglin haploinsufficiency results in increased proliferation and migration of primary cultured murine dermal fibroblasts (MDFs). Moreover, Eng+/− MDF have diminished responses to apoptotic signals compared with control cells. Altogether, these modifications could explain the augmented presence of fibroblasts in Eng+/− mice wounds. We demonstrate that endoglin expression regulates Akt phosphorylation and that PI3K inhibition abolishes the differences in proliferation between endoglin haploinsufficient and control cells. Finally, persistent fibroblasts in Eng+/− mice wound co-localize with a greater degree of Akt phosphorylation. Thus, endoglin haploinsufficiency seems to promote fibroblast accumulation during wound healing through the activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway. These studies open new non-Smad signaling pathway for endoglin regulating fibroblast cell function during wound healing, as new therapeutic opportunities for the treatment of fibrotic wounds.  相似文献

In a controlled study using 15 piglets, the efficacy of skin stretching using a skin stretching device was tested by quantifying the tension decrease during skin stretching in undermined and not undermined wounds. The viability of the skin margins was examined in both situations. Thirty standardized wounds was created: around 15 wounds on one flank, the surrounding skin was undermined; whereas around the 15 wounds on the opposite flank, the surrounding skin was not undermined. The force required to close the 9 x 9 cm defect was measured at the beginning, after undermining, and after 30 minutes of skin stretching. Also examined was the wound healing after 1 day and 1 week. A tension decrease of 3.02 N (13.6 percent reduction of the total force that is required to close the wound at the beginning) was seen due to undermining the surrounding skin. Skin stretching for 30 minutes without undermining the skin showed a tension decrease of 6.10 N (26.5 percent). Therefore, the tension decrease due to skin stretching was twice as high in comparison with undermining the skin margins alone. This has been statistically proven to be significant (-d (difference) = 3.08, 95 percent confidence interval = 2.16; 4.00, p < 0.001). When the undermined skin of the wound was stretched for 30 minutes, we measured a total tension decrease of 7.60 N (34.1 percent). There was a statistically significant but small difference in total tension decrease as a result of undermining combined with skin stretching in comparison with skin stretching without undermining (-d = 1.51, 95 percent confidence interval = 0.77; 2.23, p < 0.001). Undermining the surrounding skin involved cutting musculocutaneous perforating vessels. Looking at the viability of the skin, seven wounds, all found in the undermined group, showed skin necrosis after 1 week. Excessive seroma formation was seen in all wounds around which the skin was undermined. In the not undermined wounds, there were no problems in wound healing. In conclusion, skin stretching for only 30 minutes using a skin stretching device significantly reduces wound closing tension. The additional advantage of skin stretching over that of undermining alone is clearly shown. Undermining the wound margins before skin stretching gives a small additional tension decrease but has well-known complications, such as skin-edge necrosis and seroma formation.  相似文献

The aim of the investigations was the determination of the Cu contents in the liver, kidneys and skeletal muscles of canine females. Material for research was collected post mortem from 45 animals aged 1 to 18 years coming from the Warsaw area. The effect of the health state, age and life conditions on the distribution of copper in the investigated organs was estimated. That element was determined using the method of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). In the liver, the average Cu contents amounted to 24.04 mg kg−1 wet weight, in kidneys to 2.90 mg kg−1 wet weight and in muscles to 0.94 mg kg−1 wet weight. The highest values of copper content in particular tissues and organs were noted in the group of animals with neoplastic changes. In respect to the animal age the highest mean values of the copper content were noted in the oldest animals. They amounted to 30.97 mg kg−1 in the liver, 3.34 mg kg−1 in kidneys and 1.18 mg kg−1 wet weight in muscles. Considering life conditions of the dogs it was observed that the higher mean values in all the investigated organs occurred in dogs coming from the urban areas.  相似文献
