The spatial and temporal variations of the fish assemblages in mountain streams of China are poorly understood. The relationships between the fish assemblage and selected habitat features were examined in the North Tiaoxi River, one of headwaters of Taihu Lake. A total of 3,348 individuals belonging to 5 orders, 11 families, 25 genera and 34 species were collected including 33 native species and one invasive species. Among those, about 20 species were endemic to China. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) was applied to compare fish assemblage structures from upstream to downstream during four seasons. Species assemblages differed along the stream continuum, but there was little apparent change associated with the seasons. Species richness and Shannon-Weaver index (H′) tended to increase along the stream continuum from the upstream to downstream and the proportion of invertivorous fish tended to significantly decrease along the continuum with a parallel significant increase in the percentage of omnivores. Fish assemblages were significantly related to both water quality and habitat structure variables. Canonical Correspondence Analysis ordinations (CCA) revealed that 6 of the 14 selected environmental variables had significant relationships with the fish assemblage such as distance to source, stream width, altitude, pH, water depth, and water velocity and different sampling sites were associated with different environmental variables in different seasons. The main differences in fish assemblage structure and diversity within the whole watercourse are probably related to large-scale factors such distance to source, altitude and stream width. Differences of instream characteristics are likely to be caused by natural variability of the ecosystems but also, in some case, by anthropogenic influence like human settlements, agriculture and river embankment and pollution from small factory.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 5 typological variables on the spatial distribution patterns of fish species richness in south‐western France, and, subsequently, to analyse differences in the number of species occurring in 6 major hydroregions located within the overall study area. The data were collected at 329 sampling sites. General Linear Modelling was used to assess the influence of each typological variable on local fish species richness, and to determine the differences in local fish species richness between the 6 hydroregions. Local species richness was significantly influenced by altitude, slope and catchment area, whereas distance from the source and stream width showed no significant relations with local richness. The Côteaux de Gascogne hydroregion had a significantly lower species richness, whereas no significant differences occurred among other neighbouring hydroregions. These results were congruent with the spatial distribution patterns of freshwater invertebrate species richness in the area, which were analysed in previous studies. At such a regional scale, we suggest that congruent patterns between fish and invertebrate species richness are almost certainly a result of similar responses by different taxa to environmental conditions, rather than to biotic interactions. The abundance and taxonomic richness of adult caddisfly faunas were determined at varing distances (up to 200 m) away from three North Island, New Zealand, streams to help define appropriate forested riparian zone widths for adult aquatic insects. Adults were collected using sticky traps and ultraviolet light traps on four occasions over summer. Light traps were more effective at catching caddisflies than sticky traps, but both methods gave similar patterns of declining abundance and taxonomic richness with distance from the stream edge. Abundances of total caddisflies at 20 m were <21% of those caught at the stream edge for both trapping techniques. The same trends were evident for abundances of most common species in light traps, whereas bimodal peaks were evident with distance from the channel edge for percentage females of three common species. More than 30% of species caught at the stream edge was found in light traps at least 70 m into forest at all sites. A faster rate of decline for abundance than richness with distance away from the stream reflected the relatively large distances travelled by representatives of many species. Similar results from the three sites for numbers and species richness indicate that the main area of activity for adult Trichoptera in forested riparian zones was within 30 m of the stream edge at these sites.  相似文献

In the autumn of 2004, a typhoon caused a catastrophic flood of the Miyagawa River in Japan. Based upon snorkeling surveys conducted every autumn from 2005 to 2009, we monitored the post flood fluctuation of the local fish assemblages at nine sites of both the main stream and subsidiary streams of the river. Results revealed that species richness significantly increased from 2005 to 2009. In addition, the fish densities of eight species significantly increased over the same period, whereas the density of one species decreased, and that of eight others remained unchanged. Categorization based on Euclidean distance revealed five main clusters from the nine sites. Among these sites, fish assemblages within subsidiary streams were stable as they remained within the same clusters while those in the main stream were dynamically variable through time as they changed cluster membership. In addition, the Euclidean distance between two arbitrary fish assemblages was positively correlated with environmental distance (the Euclidean distance calculated based on river width, depth, velocity and pebble size), time distance, and spatial distance along the river. In conclusion, the fish assemblages were dynamically and regularly altered and varied in the five years after the flood, except for those in the subsidiary streams, and such variation was related to environmental, temporal and spatial variation.  相似文献

Species richness and assemblage structure of Trichoptera in Danish streams   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
  • 1 Species richness and assemblages of Trichoptera from 157 ‘pristine’ Danish lowland stream sites were analyzed, for dependence on geographical position of the sites and simple physical variables, using two way indicator species analysis and detrended correspondence analysis.
  • 2 A total of 106 species were recorded, representing ≈ 90% of the species pool known from Danish streams. Only seven species occurred at more than half the sites, whereas an additional 11 species were found at more than a quarter of the sites.
  • 3 Although sites showed significant regional differences in environmental variables (stream order, width, slope and presence/absence of riparian forest), species richness and assemblages were primarily correlated with stream order, width and slope. Maximum richness was found at the largest (5th order) stream sites.
  • 4 Regional differences in species assemblages were found, with several species being absent from the islands Funen and Bornholm. Species assemblages also differed between forested and non‐forested stream sites.
  • 5 We found evidence that stream temperature may be of only minor importance in determining Trichoptera species richness and assemblage composition in Danish streams compared to other size‐related physical factors.

The effect of 19 environmental variables on species richness of macrophytes was studied in 39 Slovak streams. The studied streams were poor in species; in total, 88 macrophyte taxa were found and the average number of macrophytes per sampling site was 4, ranging from 0 to15. The most frequently occurring macrophytes were filamentous algae (occurrence at 38.6% of sampling sites), followed by Rhynchostegium riparioides (28.4%) and Phalaris arundinacea (19.3%). The strongest environmental gradient in the sampling site detected by factor analysis (factor 1 explains more than 32% variability) is related to the portion of artificial banks, shading by woody vegetation along banks, flexuosity of stream course and the portion of natural land cover in the contact zone of the stream, and can be interpreted as a natural-anthropogenic gradient. The following variables had the highest correlations with species richness of macrophytes: shading by woody vegetation (r=?0.507), portions of artificial bank (r=0.488), flexuosity (r=?0.457) and distance from stream source (r=0.388).  相似文献

Spartina anglica is an exotic perennial grass that can rapidly colonise the intertidal zone of temperate estuaries and lagoons. Consequently, there is considerable concern about its impact on estuarine flora and fauna. This study provides the first investigation of ecological impacts by S. anglica in Australia. The objective was to investigate the impacts of S. anglica on benthic macroinvertebrate communities inhabiting mudflat and native saltmarsh habitats at Little Swanport estuary, Tasmania. The null hypothesis that species richness and species abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates in exotic S. anglica marsh does not differ from adjacent native saltmarsh and mudflat habitats was tested. Eighteen species and 3716 macroinvertebrates were collected from 60 intertidal core samples in three habitats. Species richness, total abundance of invertebrates, crustacean abundance and mollusc abundance of mudflat communities were significantly (P < 0.05) lower when compared to those inhabiting adjacent S. anglica marsh and native saltmarsh. However, species richness and total abundance of invertebrates of native saltmarsh and S. anglica marsh did not differ significantly. Ordination of macroinvertebrate data clearly separated mudflat sites from vegetated sites but showed remarkable similarity between exotic and native vegetated sites.  相似文献

We surveyed ground-dwelling small mammals in twenty-four rainforest remnants which were virtual islands surrounded by farmland on a plateau on the east coast of Australia. We investigated the effect of island size, level of disturbance, isolation and microhabitat on the abundance and species richness of the mammals. The remnants ranged from 0.3 to 29 ha, resulting from fragmentation during 175 years of European occupation. Two rodent species (Rattus fuscipes[Waterhouse, 1839] and R. rattus[Linnaeus, 1758] ) and one marsupial insectivore (Antechinus stuartii Macleay, 1841) were trapped in these remnants, with an additional species (A. swainsonii[Waterhouse, 1840] ) several kilometres away in rainforest on the escarpment of the plateau. Small-mammal species richness was low, but the native species (R. fuscipes and A. stuartii) were abundant. Three-way analyses of variance demonstrated that species richness and abundance decreased significantly with decreasing remnant size and increasing disturbance, but showed no distance effect. The abundance and richness of native species responded even more significantly. The interaction between the first two effects is important. Small remnants are affected most detrimentally by increasing disturbance, large remnants are less affected, and medium sized remnants show intermediate effects. The introduced R. rattus which was least abundant in large remnants, but more abundant in distant than near remnants, was also more abundant in those with major disturbance. The single most important variable in step-wise, multiple linear regression analyses was the logarithm of remnant area not influenced by edge effects, explaining 39% of the variance in species richness, 57% for native species richness and 46% for A. stuartii abundance. Disturbance related variables additionally contributed from 12 to 30% of the variance in dependent variables, while habitat variables explained between 22 and 48% of the variance, and accounted for two thirds of the explainable variance in R. fuscipes abundance. The implications of our results for wildlife conservation on the plateau are discussed.  相似文献

Fish eggs and larvae were collected monthly between September 1987 and April 1989 from sites throughout the main basin and within the saline regions of the two main tributary rivers of Wilson Inlet, a seasonally closed estuary in south-western Australia. Of the eggs, 43.7% belonged to Engraulis australis (Shaw) and the rest to unidentified teleosts. The larval fish assemblage comprised 17 families represented by 25 species. The Gobiidae contained the highest number of species (four) and contributed approximately 57% of all larvae caught. Pseudogobius olorum (Sauvage) and E. australis were the most abundant species, contributing 43.9 and 27.9% to the total larval catch, respectively. The larvae of species which breed within Wilson Inlet dominated the assemblage, both in terms of number of species (64%) and contribution to total catch (99.9%). The numbers of the eight marine species and one freshwater species represented in the ichthyoplankton were very low. Classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination showed that the composition of the larval fish fauna at the various sites during a period when the estuary remained open to the sea (December 1988-April 1989) was similar to that of the corresponding sites during the same period in the previous year when the estuary had become closed (December 1987-April 1988). This can be attributed to the spatial distribution, time of occurrence and abundance of estuarine-spawned larvae being similar in the two periods and to the rarity of marine-spawned larvae, even in the spring and summer of 1988/1989 when the estuary was open for the whole time when most marine teleosts spawn in south-western Australia. The low occurrence of marine-spawned larvae in Wilson Inlet reflects the fact that tidal water movement within the basin of the system is so small that it is unable to facilitate the transport and dispersion of larvae. The ichthyoplankton of Wilson Inlet resembles that of other poorly-flushed estuaries in that it is low in species richness and dominated by estuarine-spawned larvae.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Patterns of simuliid species richness were examined over a variety of scales at 532 stream sites in the Nearctic (394) and Neotropical (138) regions. In Nearctic streams, species richness of immature blackflies both within and across ecoregions and over two seasons was examined. Stream variables at each site included seston, width, depth, velocity, discharge, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, dominant streambed-particle size, canopy cover, and riparian vegetation. These variables were subjected to a principal component analysis and derived principal components were related back to richness, using regression analysis. At the level of the stream reach, richness was not highly correlated with single-point measurements of stream conditions.
2. Using data from both Nearctic and Neotropical sites, the effect of regional richness on local richness was examined. As regional richness increased, local diversity reached an asymptote in which further increases in regional richness were not matched by increases in local richness. Hence, simuliid communities are best described as saturated (type II) communities, consistent with the current view of lotic communities as non-equilibrium systems.
3. The well-established pattern of greater species richness in tropical regions was not observed in this study. To the contrary, blackfly richness is higher in temperate streams than in tropical streams at both local and regional scales.

Leaf litter derived from riparian trees can control secondary production of detritivores in forested streams. Species-rich assemblages of leaf litter reflect riparian plant species richness and represent a heterogeneous resource for stream consumers. Such variation in resource quality may alter consumer growth and thus the feedback on leaf breakdown rate via changes in feeding activity. To assess the consequences of this type of resource heterogeneity on both consumer growth and subsequent litter breakdown, we performed a laboratory experiment where we offered a leaf-shredding stream detritivore (the stonefly Tallaperla maria, Peltoperlidae) ten treatments of either single- or mixed-species leaf litter. We measured consumer growth rate, breakdown rate and feeding activity both with and without consumers for each treatment and showed that all three variables responded to speciose leaf litter. However, the number of leaf species was not responsible for these results, but leaf species composition explained the apparent non-additive effects. T. maria growth responded both positively and negatively to litter composition, and growth on mixed-litter could not always be predicted by averaging estimates of growth in single-species treatments. Furthermore, breakdown and feeding rates in mixed litter treatments could not always be predicted from estimates of single-species rates. Given that species richness and composition of senesced leaves in streams reflects riparian plant species richness, in-stream secondary production of detritivores and organic matter dynamics may be related to species loss of trees in the riparian zone. Loss of key species may be more critical to maintaining such processes than species richness per se.  相似文献

1. Barriers to immigration, all else being equal, should in principle depress local abundance and reduce local species richness. These issues are particularly relevant to stream‐dwelling species when improperly designed road crossings act as barriers to migration with potential impacts on the viability of upstream populations. However, because abundance and richness are highly spatially and temporally heterogeneous and the relative importance of immigration on demography is uncertain, population‐ and community‐level effects can be difficult to detect. 2. In this study, we tested the effects of potential barriers to upstream movements on the local abundance and species richness of a diverse assemblage of resident stream fishes in the Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia, U.S.A. Fishes were sampled using simple standard techniques above‐ and below road crossings that were either likely or unlikely to be barriers to upstream fish movements (based on physical dimensions of the crossing). We predicted that abundance of resident fishes would be lower in the upstream sections of streams with predicted impassable barriers, that the strength of the effect would vary among species and that variable effects on abundance would translate into lower species richness. 3. Supporting these predictions, the statistical model that best accounted for variation in abundance and species richness included a significant interaction between location (upstream or downstream of crossing) and type (passable or impassable crossing). Stream sections located above predicated impassable culverts had fewer than half the number of species and less than half the total fish abundance, while stream sections above and below passable culverts had essentially equivalent richness and abundance. 4. Our results are consistent with the importance of immigration and population connectivity to local abundance and species richness of stream fishes. In turn, these results suggest that when measured at appropriate scales (multiple streams within catchments), with simple protocols amenable to use by management agencies, differences in local abundance and species richness may serve as indicators of the extent to which road crossings are barriers to fish movement and help determine whether road‐crossing improvements have restored connectivity to stream fish populations and communities.  相似文献

1. We studied how species richness of three hierarchical insect species groups, namely all benthic, lotic and filtering taxa, were related to a number of environmental variables in a data set from fifteen Swedish lake outlets. 2. In partial least-squares analyses, we found that size-related factors (stream width, discharge) and velocity-related factors (current velocity, substratum particle size) were positively associated, and productivity-related factors (chlorophyll a, seston energy, conductivity) negatively associated, with the species richness of the three groups. 3. The weak and negative relationship of richness with productivity largely negated theoretical predictions, whereas the species-environment results corroborated earlier findings from running water systems. 4. The most important factors associated with the species composition of the lake outlets studied included pH, lake area, discharge, channel width and detritus. 5. Of the filter feeders, most species of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) showed a negative relationship with pH. 6. A nested subset analysis demonstrated that species-poor sites did not have a subset of species found at more species-rich sites in any of the three hierarchical groups.  相似文献

Variations in prosome length and width, dry weight and condition factor of female Acartia clausi copepods were studied at three salinities (35, 34 and 33 psu) in the euhaline region of two estuaries (Bilbao and Urdaibai) of the Basque coast, with different level of anthropogenic impact. Effect of the environmental variables upon the morphology of A. clausi females on a small geographic scale is discussed. In general, biometric variables showed no significant differences between the two estuaries, but dry weight and condition factor were significantly higher in the estuary of Urdaibai at 35 and 34 psu, whilst at 33 psu they were higher in Bilbao. Body dimensions decreased significantly with decreasing salinity in both estuaries, however, no similar trends were observed for dry weight and condition factor. Temperature appeared the main variable to account size variations, but once eliminated seasonal effect of the temperature body size was related with oxygen concentration in the estuary of Bilbao and with salinity in Urdaibai. This study reveals that morphological characteristics of A. clausi not are only dependent on the temperature, but also, within a limited geographical zone, on local differences in environmental variables, mainly salinity and oxygen concentration.  相似文献

1. The objective of this study was to identify the most ecologically relevant hydrological indices for characterizing hydrological regimes in New Zealand streams. To do this we related measures of periphyton chlorophyll a, ash-free dry mass (AFDM), species richness, and diversity and invertebrate density, species richness and diversity, to thirty-four hydrological variables derived from daily flow records at eighty-three sites. The hydrological variables included some describing average flow conditions, flow variability, floods, and low-flow characteristics. 2. A principal components analysis showed that the interrelationship between many of the hydrological variables was high, and most variables correlated significantly with Principal Component 1 (PC1). The flood frequency variables formed a distinct component of the flow regime and were the main contributor to PC2. 3. We found that both the average flow conditions and some measure of variability were significantly related to most of the biological variables, and these individual hydrological variables were more strongly correlated to the biological measures than the composite principal components. Only four of the thirty-four flow variables were significantly correlated (P < 0.05) with measures of periphyton biomass (chlorophyll a and AFDM), whereas twenty-four variables were correlated with periphyton diversity. Conversely, thirty-one of the thirty-four flow variables were correlated with total invertebrate density, whereas only four variables correlated with diversity. 4. We selected the flood frequency (FRE3), where a flood is defined as flows higher than three times the median flow, as the most ecological useful overall flow variable in New Zealand streams because it explained a significant amount of the variance in four out of the six main benthic community measures, and it had a clear mechanism of control of the biota which was commensurate with current stream ecosystem theory. Periphyton biomass decreased with increasing FRE3, whereas invertebrate density had an increasing/curvilinear relationship with FRE3. Periphyton species richness and diversity decreased with increasing FRE3.  相似文献

Abstract The height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of mangroves on the Hawkesbury River, New South Wales and the Mary River, Queensland were related to soil-water salinity, soil-water content and distance from the mouth of the estuary. On the Hawkesbury River, both Avicennia marina and Aegiceras corniculatum declined in height and DBH with increasing soil-water salinity and soil-water content, and increased in height with distance from the mouth of the estuary. Both species showed an extensive range of all variables. On the Mary River, where species diversity was higher, no relationship was found between the height and DBH of A. marina and A. corniculatum and soil-water salinity and soil-water content. Both species increased in height with increasing distance from the mouth of the estuary, a characteristic shared with all other species studied (Excoecaria agallocha, Ceriops tagal var. australis, Rhizophora stylosa). The results suggest that growth characteristics of mangroves are not a simple response to salinity gradients in diverse systems and that other variables such as nutrient availability may be important controls on mangrove growth.  相似文献

Relationships between the fish community and selected habitat features were examined in a set of short temperate streams located at the northern end of the Iberian Peninsula. The fish fauna in these streams consists mostly of diadromous or estuarine species. Species richness and diversity increased with stream order, depth and width and decreased with elevation and distance from the sea. Stream order (positively) and elevation (negatively) were the two variables most highly correlated with species richness and diversity; higher order streams (order 3–4) showed greater values of species diversity than lower order ones (order 1) even when the elevation effect was removed. Addition of species in the downstream direction, but no replacement or loss was evidenced. We also compared the observed values of species diversity with those predicted from habitat features for a set of locations above unpassable dams. A great majority of the sites showed lower than predicted diversity values, which is an expected outcome for this mainly migratory fish fauna.  相似文献
