Recruitment areas for freshwater fish are often negatively affected by eutrophication and physical disturbances. Vegetated areas, which are important nursery habitats, are reduced and water turbidity increased. As a method of compensation, we tested artificial substrata for young-of-the-year fish. The structures were made of spruce bundles, with and without surrounding nets, and placed in a hyper-eutrophic very turbid environment and in an undisturbed area with clear water. Both habitats were devoid of submerged vegetation. Young fish abundance in treated areas was compared with adjacent reference sites. In the clear water area, the abundance of all investigated species – perch, pike, bream, silver-bream and roach – was higher in areas with artificial refuges. A similar response was evident for cyprinids in the turbid environment. High abundance of pikeperch and ruffe appeared in the hyper-eutrophic test area. Neither of these species, nor perch, was attracted to the artificial refuges. The lack of response in perch and pikeperch suggests that the importance of structural refuge decreases in very turbid water for these species. Of the two methods tested, spruce bundles with surrounding nets generally attracted most young fish, implying that the nets further increased the refuge capacity by reducing predation risk. The conclusion is that artificial habitats could improve recruitment habitats and that protective devices can increase refuge capacity.  相似文献

Mortality of 0+ Eurasian perch was measured directly from the decline in catch in a high-speed plankton sampler and described by a negative exponential model. A mean mortality of 0.063 day 1 (range=0.020–0.089) was calculated; for 0+ juveniles it was 0.021 day 1. Mean larval production was 0.85–1.30 mg dry weight m−2 day−1 in Loch Kinord and 0.08–0.12 in Loch Davan. Annual production of 0+ juveniles was 1.97–7.55 kg wet weight ha −1 at L. Kinord and 1.01 kg at L. Davan. The contribution of 0+ perch, including the egg stages, to total perch production was 88–96%. Availability of food items on transition to exogenous feeding and through the larval period did not limit survival. Cannibalism by adults accounted for most of larval mortality, and predation by pike and adult perch were responsible for the majority of juvenile losses. The population structure of adult perch, for 12 year classes, was stable at L. Kinord, while year classes at L. Davan exhibited fluctuations in abundance and in two sampling years were eliminated in the first summer. Survival in the eleutheroembryonic phase was variable at L. Davan and observed to be low compared with L. Kinord. It is suggested that this was a result of water turbulence on the exposed and shallow spawning areas at L. Davan.  相似文献

A large scale experiment has been carried out on the perch and pike populations of Windermere in the English Lake District for nearly 40 years, and the objectives have changed over this period. Initially the aim was to manage the trout population, but the work has produced data of interest in predator-prey relationships and pike management. Perch were first heavily fished and then monitored for size, and numbers by trapping. Large pike have been culled by gill netting. The effects of pike gill netting have been to increase the growth rate and decrease the average age in the population. These changes in the pike population structure, together with climatic variations, have modified the perch population. The perch did not recover from the heavy fishing for many years and the population numbers remained low due to pike predation supressing recruitment. It was not until a large cohort, mainly controlled by the weather, was produced that the population increased. Cannibalism by these perch later combined with the pike predation to suppress future cohorts. There have also been as yet unexplained changes in the perch mortality rates. The experiments have led to a greater understanding of the relationship between pike and perch populations, but the use of this knowledge for management depends on what the objectives are.  相似文献

Pike predators induce morphological changes in young perch and roach   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The morphological response of two 1 year-old prey species, perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus to the presence of predatory pike Esox lucius , was tested in a 6 week aquarium experiment. The growth of perch was higher than that of roach but there was no difference in growth of prey between predator and control treatments. The presence of pike caused morphological changes in both perch and roach. Perch showed an increase in body depth during the experiment whereas the morphological response of roach to pike was more related to a displacement of the dorsal and pelvic fins and width of the anal fin. Differences in morphological responses of perch and roach to pike can be interpreted by their overall differences in antipredator strategies.  相似文献

Perca fluviatilis L. were caught by gill nets every 3 h over a 24 h period monthly from February 1975 until January 1976. The numbers caught increased with rise in temperature (correlation coefficient r = 0.86 P < 0.001). During the winter months perch migrated into deeper water although some fish were still caught in shallow water (1–6 m). Perch were active at very low light intensities. However changes in visual surface irradiance (400–700 nm) and water clarity caused inverse changes in activity. Only June did not conform to this pattern and it was presumed that spawning behaviour was of primary importance. It is suggested that increase in eutrophication with its effect on water clarity enables fish to become more active during the day in the summer months. They are thus able to utilise food sources to a maximum at an optimum period for feeding and growth.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1, Windermere is a glacial valley lake with two basins separated by shallows and a total area of 14.8 km2. Perch, pike and charr are the dominant fish species and have been studied on a continuous basis for over 45 years.
2. The initial slow-growing stocks of numerous small perch and moderate numbers of large pike were subjected to a heavy initial fishing pressure that was subsequently relaxed for perch but not for larger (>550 mm) pike. The number of charr in the lake has increased 6–8-fold during the study, probably due to the sustained reduction in the abundance of the larger pike that heavily predate the autumn spawning race of charr when it enters the shallow littoral areas to spawn.
3. The biomass of perch did not recover from the initial fishery until the late 1950s when strong year-classes occurred in warm summers. However, it was now composed of larger and faster growing individuals. In 1976, disease killed over 98% of all adult perch in the lake and the subsequent recovery has again been slow.
4. Existing models have explained the variation in perch year-class strength for the years 1959–74 in terms of adult perch biomass, pike cohort strength and temperature in the year of hatch. A new. more generally applicable model, incorporating a stock-recruitment expression, gives a better fit to the earlier data, particularly from the North Basin, where there have been periods of extremely low adult biomass.
5. The importance of continuing to extend these long-term data sets and the scope for future modelling work are discussed.  相似文献

The variability of the catch of pike Esox lucius L. from gill nets in Windermere over the period 1961–71 has been analysed. Altogether 2952 catches have been treated by analysis of variance after an appropriate transformation. A representative value of the residual between catch variance has been used to estimate the reliability of the means of catches based on different numbers of net settings. It is shown that many settings of gill nets are required to get a reliable mean catch.  相似文献

Multi-mesh gill nets set at Rawlinson's Nab in the south basin of Windermere for 24 months from 1979 to 1981 caught predominantly charr and perch. Nets set parallel to the shore caught significantly fewer fish than those set perpendicular to the shore. Variability in the mean catches of perch increased from winter to summer when the size of the catches also increased. Charr were mostly caught from November until February. Estimates of variance associated with the geometric mean catch of a single net (set perpendicular to the shore) were calculated for the periods winter for the charr and winter, summer, spring and autumn for the perch. These variances were used to calculate 95 and 99% C.L. of the geometric mean. For limits to be below half or twice the geometric mean, 12 nets would have to be used for charr during winter. For perch the number of nets needed would be six in winter, 20 in spring and autumn and 40 in summer. It is concluded that the nets are of little value in assessing changes in stock abundance.  相似文献

The theoretical limits of net reproduction rates for perch, Perca fluviatilis L. and pike, Esox lucius L, have been estimated from the upper and lower limits of fecundity, growth, mortality, age of maturity and biomass of parental stock, observed in Windermere over 40 years. Differences in egg numbers due to changes in fecundity were for perch × 1.5, for pike × 2. Assuming the same mortality, a fast growing cohort would produce more eggs during its lifespan than a slow growing, for perch × 2, for pike × 9. Changes in mortality from high to low resulted in more eggs, for perch × 7, and for pike (where high mortality includes natural and fishing mortality) × 10. Change in age at first maturity from 3 to 2 years was unimportant. Biomass of parental stock varied by × 6 for perch and × 3 for pike, and number of eggs laid varied by x2 for perch and × 5 for pike. The number of recruits at age 2 years varied by × 300 for perch and × 7 for pike. It was concluded that temperature in the first summer of life and predation were of major importance in regulating the number of recruits. Ricker recruitment curves and a simple model showed that perch, but not pike, could produce maximum recruitment from minimum parental stock. For perch, but not pike, compensatory density dependent mortality increased with increased parental stock. It was concluded that responses by the perch and pike populations to a changing environment can not be of sufficient magnitude to prevent wide fluctuations in recruitment.  相似文献

A study of a stocked upland reservoir trout fishery, using gill nets, revealed the presence of a large stock of pike and poor trout numbers. The overall growth rate of pike was slow. Two year-classes of pike dominated, but the broad age and length frequency ranges, and the high average weight of individuals were indicative of an unexploited stock. Higher than normal water levels during the spawning period and into the summer period in both 1985 and 1986, coincided with the dominant pike year-classes recorded several years later. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Synopsis The population dynamics and predator-prey relationship of pike, Esox lucius, and perch, Perca fluviatilis, were examined in simple fish communities in two adjacent shallow lakes, Lochs Kinord and Davan, Deeside, Scotland. Few perch survive to age 3 but Z is low for fish > 3 years and perch live up to 17 years. Population fecundity remained relatively high and constant in perch because of the multi-age spawning stock and the presence of older more fecund perch. Growth rates of perch in both lochs are relatively high as a consequence of low stock abundance. The N, B, and P of adult perch were unusually low. The age range of pike, and N, B, P, and growth were in the range of values reported elsewhere. There was little variation in the strength of pike year classes and the importance of cannibalism and low occurrence of alternative prey in the lochs suggest that the populations were self-regulating. Cannibalism by adults was responsible for most of mortality in perch larvae, and predation by pike and adult perch was responsible for the majority of juvenile losses. This conclusion is supported by the high biomass ratios of pike:juvenile perch of 1.0–30.8. While the number of adult fish was almost equal, the biomass of adult pike was 2–3 × that of perch in Kinord and 6 × in Davan. In L. Kinord, where year class strength was stable, high predation pressure from perch and pike reduced perch abundance rather than eliminated year classes. Perch year classes fluctuated in abundance in L. Davan and were eliminated in the first summer in two sampling years. The pike, and particularly the perch populations, have features characteristic of fish communities in unperturbed ecosystems: namely, a wide range of age classes, stability in biomass with variation dampened by longevity, and low production.  相似文献

137Cs concentrations in perch Perca fluviatilis , pike Esox lucius and roach Rutilus rutilus obtained from lakes of different size and water quality in an area which received about 10–67 kBq m−2137Cs, were compared with environmental data. Radiocaesium concentrations were highest in pike, and were about two to three times higher in the pike and perch than in the roach. The largest perch had about four times more 137Cs than the smallest ones, but the activities in the pike and roach were independent of fish size. All of the water quality parameters examined correlated with 137Cs concentrations in the fish, but the concentrations of 137Cs in the bottom sediment did not. l37Cs fallout and water retention time in lakes showed a positive correlation with fish 137Cs, while the size of the catchment area, phosphorus content of the water, water colour, pH and electrical conductivity showed a negative one. Thus there was more 137Cs in the fish from the oligotrophic lakes than from the eutrophic ones, from the less humic lakes than from the more humic ones, from the more acid than from the less acid ones and from the lakes containing less potassium than from those containing more potassium. The depth, area and volume of the lake did not affect radiocaesium in the fish. Regression equations are presented for predicting 137Cs in fish on the basis of environmental data. Fallout, total phosphorus and pH together had the highest influence in multiple regression models but were less significant in the roach than in the perch and pike.  相似文献

We studied the hypothesis that fish play an important role in lake use by ducks (pairs and broods) in boreal lakes. The study was based on densities of different duck and fish species in 28 boreal lakes in southern Finland. We focused on the three most common duck species (mallard Anas platyrhynchos, green-winged teal A. crecca and common goldeneye Bucephala clangula) and on the three most common fish species (perch Perca fluviatilis, roach Rutilus rutilus and pike Esox lucius) in the region. We considered both competitive and predatory interactions between ducks and fish, the perch and roach being potential competitors with ducks and the pike a potential predator of ducks. We found a negative association between green-winged teal brood density and total fish density, the other duck species having only a weak association with total fish density. When the three fish species were considered separately, a negative association, suggesting food competition, was found between perch, green-winged teal and goldeneye, whereas the role of roach as a food competitor seemed to be of minor importance. We did not find any clear signs of predatory effects of pike on ducks. Our results suggest that food competition is a more important factor than pike predation in affecting lake use by ducks in oligotrophic boreal environments in southern Finland.  相似文献

We examined relationships among perch population variable parameters in two types of lakes, lakes with perch (P-lakes, n?=?15) and lakes with perch and roach (PR-lakes, n?=?10) using redundancy analysis (RDA) to relate population variables to environmental factors. Effects from environmental factors were tested for significance by means of permutation tests (Monte Carlo). Three factors, pH, altitude and fraction of roach (by number) in the gill net catches, explaining 47.9% of the variation, had significant effects on perch population variables. The significance of pH was improved by partialing out the effect of conductivity and roach. Similarly, the significance of altitude was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and roach, and the significance of roach was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and altitude. When the fraction of pike in the catch was included in the analysis, the effect of roach was not significant and vice-versa, as roach and pike fractions were correlated with each other. The effect of pike was significant when roach was not included, but the effect was not as strong as the effect of roach. A biplot was constructed by plotting population variables on the first and second RDA axis, with arrows showing five selected environmental factors. Growth of 3+ to 5+ perch was positively related to pH and altitude, perch catch per unit effort was negatively related to pH and altitude, and age specific perch weight was negatively related to fraction of roach. The relationship between growth of 2+ perch and pH was not as strong as the relationship between pH and the growth of older perch. Moreover, the growth of 2+ perch was negatively related to the fraction of roach, probably due to competition between young zooplankton feeding perch and roach.  相似文献

1. In size-structured communities where individuals grow in size over their life cycle, interactions between species will shift between competitive and predatory interactions depending on size relationships. The outcome of interactions will subsequently depend on the strength of competitive and predatory interactions, respectively. 2. In a whole lake experiment including four experimental lakes, it was tested under which conditions the competing prey, roach Rutilus rutilus, could successfully recruit into systems previously occupied by the predator, perch Perca fluviatilis. Two replicated introduction experiments were carried out 3 years apart. 3. Roach were able to successfully recruit into three of the four experimental lakes of which two were also inhabited by the top predator pike Esox lucius. Resource levels were unrelated to whether roach could successfully recruit into the systems as recruiting roach in all years were feeding close to their maximum rate. 4. High population fecundity of roach and low predation pressure by perch combined were necessary ingredients for successful recruitment and the presence of only one of these conditions did not result in successful recruitment. 5. It is hypothesized that, although roach were able to successfully recruit into one lake with only perch present in addition to the two lakes that also inhabited pike, long-term coexistence of roach and perch depends on the presence of another top predator (e.g. pike) selectively preying on perch. This hypothesis was supported by data on co-occurrence of perch and roach in different lakes. 6. Overall, the results are in accordance with expectation of size-structured life-history omnivory theory suggesting that coexistence between top predator and intermediate consumer is fragile.  相似文献

Although the total migratory activity of fishes from floodplain lakes in the Lower Rhine (Germany) into the connected drainage channels, estimated using electrofishing, fyke nets and visual observations, was low during summer 1997, conspicuous diel migrations of adult bream Abramis brama in June and July were recorded in one of the channels studied. A considerable proportion of the population of the floodplain lake immigrated into the channel at dusk and left it at dawn. During two winters (1994–1995, 1997–1998) the abundance of fishes increased considerably in the channels. The winter migrations, studied in detail in one of the channels in 1997–1998, started in late October, when the water temperature dropped below 10° C. In contrast to the mean of 500 fishes per 100 m channel length between May and October, >5000 fishes were found from November to March, with maximum values of >50 000 fishes per 100 m channel length in February 1998. More than 90% of these shoals were 0+ year fishes, dominated by roach Rutilus rutilus , bream, perch Perca fluviatilis and rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus . These shoals entered the channel at sunrise and left it around sunset. Generally, the 0+ year fishes in the shoals swam separately from the older fishes, and different reactions towards the attack of predatory fishes were observed. The migrating shoals of juvenile fishes during the winter were interpreted as a strategy to minimize predation risk.  相似文献

The depth limits for visual feeding by pollan larvae and fry, Coregonus pollan , were determined in Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland, by combining laboratory estimates of the minimum light threshold for feeding activity with field measurements of spectral, diurnal and seasonal changes in light penetration. Although feeding thresholds were lowest in the blue light (400–490 nm), the rapid attenuation of this region in the lake meant that the depth limits of feeding in situ were determined by response to the green region (490–595 nm). Effects of changes in irradiance and light penetration on the depth of feeding are considered during a seasonal study. Increased sensitivity, as the juvenile stages develop, may be offset by reduced light penetration due to algal growth. Over an annual period the maximum feeding depth for pollan varied between 2.6 and 4.1 m. In the juvenile stages of two other predatory species from the lake, perch, Perca fluviatilis , and pike, Esox lucius , the corresponding ranges were 1.1–1.9 m and 2.7–4.6 m respectively.  相似文献

The development of spawning in perch, pike and roach in Lake Geneva has been studied by means of artificial spawning substrates, laid at different depths, from 1984 to 1993. In Lake Geneva, perch spawned in May. A rise of surface water temperature up to 14 °C stimulated spawning activity while bad weather (surface temperature at 10 °C) induced a spread of the spawning period over more than one month. The spawning period was delayed in years when the mean width of perch egg-ribbons was the largest; this corresponded to the biggest females. At the beginning of the spawning period (early in May), perch preferentially chose a depth of 4 m to spawn. In contrast, at the end of the spawning period, maximum spawning intensity was observed at a depth of 12 m. This phenomenon was more pronounced when water temperature rose above 14 °C in the top 4 m while it remained below 12 °C at a depth of 12 m. Pike spawned at the end of April and at the beginning of May in Lake Geneva. They preferred spruce branches among the different spawning substrates that we tested in Lake Vouglans. When the water temperature increased at the surface of Lake Geneva, pike preferred to lay their eggs on substrates set at 3 m depth where the temperature was cooler than in the surface layer (10.5 °C vs 14 °C). Roach spawned during the last two weeks of May or during the first two weeks of June in Lake Geneva, depending on water temperature. Spawning had generally been spread over a week, but a sudden decrease of water temperature could slow spawning intensity. Roach were able to lay their eggs on natural or synthetic substrates, located 0.5 m below the surface near the shore as well as, at a distance of several hundred metres from the shore. The survival of eggs was always above 90% for perch and roach and generally above 70% for pike.  相似文献

Results are presented from a survey of walleye and northern pike in Ethel, Marie and Wolf Lakes, Alberta conducted May-September, 1983. Three types of experimental gill net were fished, mainly inshore. Northern pike were abundant in all three lakes but white sucker and yellow perch also were common. Walleye were caught in largest numbers in Wolf Lake. Age and growth of both walleye and northern pike were determined from examination of the opercular bones. The walleye in the three lakes were represented by a few strong year classes but there was no synchronism between the lakes. The strong 1975 year class in Ethel and Wolf Lakes may have been correlated with high spring precipitation and heavy run-off. Although there were dominant year classes in the northern pike populations (especially the 1979 year class) the variability was not so marked as in the walleye. There were no significant differences between length-at-age for year classes of walleye in Ethel and Marie or northern pike in all three lakes. In Wolf Lake the 1978 and 1979 year classes grew faster than in previous years. Walleye and northern pike growth was well described by the von Bertalanffy growth model. Females of both species grew to a greater ultimate length and had a longer lifespan than the males. Fecundity data are presented for walleye from Wolf Lake (log10 absolute fecundity = 0.856 + 2.441 log10 length) and northern pike from Marie Lake (log10 absolute fecundity =?2.671+4.052 log10 length). The stomach contents of both species were examined during May and June. The majority of walleye had empty stomachs. Walleye and northern pike in Ethel and Wolf Lakes fed on a variety of fish and invertebrate species but both fed mainly on fish (in particular whitefish) in Marie Lake. The similarity of diet suggests competition for prey species. A walleye yield to commercial fishermen of c. 0.69 kg ha?1 year?1 in Wolf Lake has made up 8% of the total catch. Since 1970/71 when mesh size of nets was increased, the yield has been reduced to c. 0.30 kg ha?1 year?1. Anglers remove an additional c. 0.48 kg ha?1 year?1 walleye from Wolf Lake. Northern pike yields to commercial fishermen have been c. 2.00 kg ha?1 year?1 in Wolf Lake. Ethel and Marie Lakes have yielded only poor catches of walleye and northern pike. A yield model was used to illustrate that faster-growing northern pike have higher potential yields than walleye. Walleye produce higher yields in Wolf Lake than in Marie Lake, the reverse being true for northern pike. It is suggested that northern pike could be cropped at a higher rate in Marie and Wolf Lakes with a possible improvement in walleye stocks.  相似文献
