The exchange of isotopic water has been studied in ovarian eggs from three Anuran species (R. esculenta, R. pipiens and R. temporaria) by the automatic diver balance technique. The oocytes were treated with chemicals (digitonin, ethanol and formaldehyde) to remove the plasma membrane. The cytoplasmic diffusion coefficient for water was calculated with and without allowance for the influence of diffusion in the external medium. The former expedient was found necessary in order to obtain correct values. The chemical treatments gave different values, but there are sound reasons to believe that those obtained with digitonin (8.9, 15.3 and 10.8.10?6 cm2sec?1 for R. esculenta, R. pipiens and R. temporaria, respectively) are the correct ones. These results indicate that the rate of diffusion in the oocyte cytoplasm amounts to 50–75% of that of free diffusion.  相似文献

The water exchange has been measured in oocytes of siredon mexicanum and rana temporaria, and in unfertilized eggs and early gastrulae of the former species, by recording the D2O? H2O exchange with the cartesian diver balance. In oocytes, where no diffusion barrier to water is demonstrable, the temperature coefficient Q10 for the exchange of water is about 1.3–1.4, corresponding to that of free diffusion. in unfertilized eggs, and in early gastrulae the exchange is considerably slowed down, indicating that a surface membrane to some extent limits the rate of exchange. at the same time the Q10 value is increased, lying in the range 2.3–3.8. since it is most likely that the exchange even in this case occurs by diffusion, but through membrane pores, it is concluded that the area available for diffusion (pore size or number, or both) increases with temperature.  相似文献

Electropotential differences between the cell interior and the external medium have been studied with intracellular microelectrodes in ovarian oocytes, ovulated unfertilized eggs and fertilized eggs of R. pipiens. In ovarian oocytes the cytoplasm was 50 to 80 mV negative, relative to isotonic Ringer's solution. In contrast, electrode penetration of the oocyte nucleus in situ indicated that the nucleoplasm was about 25 mV positive, relative to the cytoplasm. After ovulation, the cortical cytoplasm became 20 to 50 mV positive with regard to an external solution of 0.1 strength Ringer's solution (ca. pond water). Penetration of the cytoplasm at levels from 0.3 to 0.6 mm below the egg surface revealed an inner zone with a potential which was about 15 mV negative, relative to the cortical cytoplasm. A slow hyperpolarization of the cortical membrane occurred at activation, with the potential returning to that of the ovulated unfertilized egg within ten minutes. After fertilization, the egg cytoplasm remained positive until the first cleavage. As division proceeded, the cytoplasm slowly depolarized and became 50 to 60 mV negative, relative to 0.1 strength Ringer's solution.  相似文献

Self-diffusion coefficient measurements of water in untreated ovarian eggs of Rana pipiens using nuclear magnetic resonance indicate that cytoplasmic water has reduced translational mobility compared with pure water. Using a simple two-state model, we find that ~67% is “relatively immobile.” Consideration of the nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times indicates that the decreased mobility can largely be ascribed to hydration. Our value for the self-diffusion coefficient (6.8 × 10?6 cm2/sec) is lower than those reported by other investigators using isotopic water exchange techniques on frog eggs chemically treated to remove the membrane. However, the results reported here are in agreement with unpublished data on untreated frog eggs implying that chemical treatment has modified the cytoplasm in some manner.  相似文献

The effects of tebufenozide, a nonsteroidal agonist of ecdysone, on egg development and reproduction in the anautogenic mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Culicidae, Diptera) are examined. The study population originates from Hyderabad, India. A dose‐dependent toxicity is observed when varying concentrations (10 µg L?1 to 10 pg L?1 ) of a flowable formulation of tebufenozide, known as Mimic 2F, are applied to first‐instar larvae in water. The median lethal dose (LC50) against larvae is very low at 1.29 ng L?1 H2O. Doses below the LC50 induce vitellogenesis in the females that subsequently emerge, and these females lay eggs autogenically (without blood feeding). Autogenous egg clutches are laid through three ovarian cycles. The number of eggs laid in each clutch is lower compared with an anautogenous clutch. An autogenic population has been maintained for over 15 generations after the primary induction, during which time the females have not been allowed to feed on blood. By comparison, doses higher than the LC50 inhibit ovarian development. There is a gradual degeneration of the ovaries, and the females die approximately 20 days after imaginal ecdysis without commencing vitellogenesis. The results are discussed in relation to the endocrine and nutritional regulation of vitellogenesis in C. quinquefasciatus, and the possibility of using tebufenozide to regulate populations of some species of mosquito .  相似文献

The purpose of the present work was to study the seasonal variations in egg production, morphology and hatching success in the cryptic species Acartia tonsa, taking into account variations in female size, population abundance and environmental factors in a turbid and hypersaline estuary. Sampling was performed during the austral warm (18–23°C and 32–36 salinity) and cold seasons (5–7°C; 32–38) in Bahía Blanca Estuary (BBE), Argentina, during 2007 and 2009. Field-collected females were incubated in the laboratory simulating in situ environmental conditions, and specimens from fixed samples were measured using optical and scanning electronic microscopy. Acartia tonsa’s marked seasonality in its reproductive traits was found to ensure its permanence in the water column all over the year. During the warm season, small-sized females were observed to invest their energy in the production of subitaneous eggs with high hatching success and smooth appearance (12.95?±?2.38 eggs f?1 day?1 and specific egg production rate (SEP) of 16.57%C f?1 day?1). During the cold season, females invested C in body mass as well as in the production of resting eggs of three different morphotypes (6.56?±?3.2 eggs f?1 day?1 and SEP of 7.37%C f?1 day?1). Although these morphotypes were found to show differences in surface ornamentation, they exhibited the same delayed hatching behaviour. The eggs with shorter spines were found to integrate the resting egg bank in BBE. Our findings confirming a delayed egg hatching behaviour and a great tolerance to low temperatures and high salinities in the A. tonsa population in BBE suggest that this possible strain is a valuable phenotype for aquaculture.  相似文献

  • 1 Life history characters (body size of adults, egg diameter, egg sac length and breadth) of nineteen species of central European cyclopoid copepods were measured and sexual size dimorphism (adult female length x adult male length?1), relative egg size (egg weight X body weight?1), weight of adult females and of eggs, egg sac shape (egg sac length x egg sac breadth?1), and reproductive effort (clutch weight produced per female weight per day) were calculated to detect trends in life history strategies.
  • 2 Typical planktonic species exhibited the lowest reproductive effort. Among planktonic species, the value for egg sac shape increased with clutch size.
  • 3 Large species and small species exhibited different trends in life history characters. Large species had larger clutches, larger eggs, and a greater sex size dimorphism than small species. However, small species had a greater relative egg size.
  • 4 Large species live in cold water and reproduce during the spring bloom of phytoplankton where the production of large clutches with relatively small eggs is advantageous. Reserves are unnecessary for juveniles because food is abundant. Small species generally are most abundant during the warm season, when conditions are less predictable, and relatively large eggs, possibly provided with reserves, are advantageous.

Summary Measurements have been made of the rate of turnover of tritiated water in the eggs of the plaice,Pleuronectes platessa and of the permeability of the vitelline membrane. The rate constant of water exchange in body cavity eggs is 1.0 h–1, corresponding to a permeability of 0.086 3/2/sec. When shed into sea water the rate constant of exchange declines to 0.2 h–1 after 1 hour and to 0.02 h–1 after one day corresponding to a permeability of 0.0017 [3/2/sec. As the embryo develops the rate of turnover increases again. The buoyancy of the egg is dependent on its low salt content which counteracts the weight of the protein. During development the water loss by osmosis reduces the egg almost to neutral buoyancy.  相似文献

The eggs of salmonid fishes are an important food source for many aquatic predators that detect eggs using olfaction. Moreover, chemicals from eggs and ovarian fluid aid sperm cells in detecting and locating eggs for fertilization, and ovarian fluid is attractive to conspecific males. Thus chemicals from eggs and ovarian fluid may facilitate reproduction but may also attract egg predators. The authors sampled mature females of three Pacific salmon species – Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) – and determined the proportional representation of amino acids, potent fish odorants, from their eggs and ovarian fluid (Chinook and coho salmon only). They then tested juvenile coho salmon, an egg predator, for responses to ovarian fluid and egg odours using the electro-olfactogram (EOG) recording technique. The amino acid compositions of the salmon species were significantly and positively correlated with each other, and the interspecific differences were comparable to those between individuals of the same species. The egg water samples were, on average, dominated by lysine, alanine and glutamine (12.6%, 12.4% and 10.9%, respectively). The ovarian fluid samples were dominated by lysine (20.5%), followed by threonine (9.7%), glycine (9.2%) and arginine (8.8%). EOG recordings demonstrated the ability of juvenile coho salmon to detect the chemical traces of eggs and ovarian fluid. It is concluded that salmon eggs are a potent source of odours for potential predators but likely not highly differentiated among salmon species.  相似文献

Summary The effect of two different incubation media, sand and vermiculite, on the water exchange of eggs and the mass of hatchlings of snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) was assessed. The eggs were incubated fully buried in either sand or vermiculite at 30 °C and egg mass was measured periodically throughout incubation. The wet and dry masses of each hatchling and its residual yolk were measured at the end of incubation. The media had similar water potentials () but their thermal conductivities differed 2.8-fold. The eggs experienced a net water gain during incubation. The rates of water uptake between treatments were not statistically different throught the first 36 days of incubation but were statistically different thereafter, with eggs incubating in sand taking up water at about twice the rate of eggs incubating in vermiculite. Hatchling masses were similar to both media but hatchling water contents were significantly different. Hatchlings incubated in sand had lower water contents than hatchlings incubated in vermiculite even though the eggs in sand took up more water. Hatchling mass was correlated with egg water exchange for eggs incubated in vermiculite but not for eggs incubated in sand. The difference in egg water exchange in the two media appears to be attributable to differences in the thermal conductivity of the media. The presence of such a thermal effect supports the hypothesis that the eggs exchanged water with the media as water vapor. Egg water exchange was limited by the shell and shell membranes and not by the media. The release of the C11-hydrocarbon spermatozoid attractant hormosirene by eggs of the Australian fucoid Hormosira banksii has been determined quantitatively using a closed-loop extraction technique. The eggs secrete erotactin for more than 2 weeks with an exponentially decreasing rate. The initial secretion rate was estimated to be 75 fmol h?1 egg?1 and the total amount of hormosirene produced per egg to be 2.35 pmol (0.35 ng). The results were used to calculate the threshold range for spermatozoid chemotaxis in the pheromone gradient around eggs.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Growth, reproduction and life‐history parameters were measured for three cladoceran species from a small south‐eastern wetland, U.S.A. Simocephalus serrulatus, Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Scapholeberis mucronata juveniles were reared at temperatures between 10 and 25 °C on natural food resources. 2. Growth rate increased with temperature and decreased with individual size for all three species. Maximum somatic growth rate was higher for Simocephalus (49–72% day?1) and Diaphanosoma (21–91% day?1) than for Scapholeberis (11–45% day?1). Multiple regression equations were developed which predict temperature‐ and mass‐specific growth rates for each species. 3. Scapholeberis egg production was positively related to temperature; however, maximum egg production occurred at intermediate temperatures for Simocephalus and Diaphanosoma. Mean cumulative egg production was higher for Scapholeberis (28–92 eggs per female) than for Simocephalus (18–25 eggs per female) and Diaphanosoma (1–41 eggs per female), and was related to differences in reproductive strategy and survival. 4. Survival was inversely related to temperature in most cases. For all three cladocerans, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and net reproductive rate (R0) increased with temperature, whereas generation time (G) decreased. Greater egg production by Scapholeberis compared with the other two cladocerans was consistent with higher R0 values for Scapholeberis at any given temperature. Although r was very similar among species, G was typically longer for Scapholeberis than for Simocephalus and Diaphanosoma. 5. This analysis provides basic information about the population parameters of these coexisting wetland species, and the growth rate models can be applied to field data to determine production dynamics.  相似文献

The developmental rate of cuckoo embryos and their hatching size is greater than that of host species, which may require more nutrient resources in the egg and more intensive gas exchange during development. In the present study, we compared various egg characteristics of a brood parasite, the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus, and its frequent host, the great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus. As maternally‐derived testosterone is known to enhance growth rate of embryos and hatchlings, cuckoo eggs are expected to contain higher concentration of testosterone than host eggs. In addition, we expected higher concentration of antioxidants in cuckoo eggs to protect embryos from oxidative stress associated with accelerated growth. Our results showed that cuckoo eggs had thicker shells and higher pore density than great reed warbler eggs. Yolk was significantly heavier in cuckoo eggs and contained higher concentrations of carotenoids and vitamin E, however, yolk androgen and immunoglobulin concentrations were lower in cuckoo eggs as compared to great reed warbler eggs. We also examined whether eggshell colour was associated to egg quality, and detected a positive association between blue‐green chroma and yolk antioxidant concentration in both species, suggesting that eggshell colour reflects the antioxidant investment of the female into the eggs. Our results suggest that cuckoo females increase the size, growth rate and competitive ability of their young by providing them with more nutrients and more dietary antioxidants for embryonic development, and not through elevated yolk testosterone or antibody levels. In addition, increased porosity of cuckoo eggshells may allow embryos to develop more rapidly because of a greater capacity of gas exchange.  相似文献

Elevation and hardening of the fertilization envelope (FE) occur within 15 min following insemination of the sea urchin egg. When chloride ions were replaced in the media with various anion substitutes, including methyl sulfonate, nitrates, bromide, and isethionate, the fertilization envelope failed to harden and collapsed back to the surface of the egg of Lytechinus variegatus, L. pictus, and Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. At the light microscopy level, the collapse of the envelope was accompanied by a decrease in birefringence, compared with controls. When examined with electron microscopy, the FEs of eggs inseminated in reduced Cl? solutions failed to transform from an amorphous layer into the more robust laminar structure observed around eggs incubated in normal sea water. Furthermore, in the case of S. purpuratus, the I-T transformation of the FE did not occur. When transfer of the inseminated eggs from the Cl?-deficient sea water to normal sea water was carried out before 10 min elapsed, the envelope did not collapse, and the birefringence of the envelope was similar to that of controls. Partial envelope collapse was also observed in a dose-dependent manner, varying with the concentration of the Cl? in the sea water solution. The results suggest that lack of Cl? in the media may interfere with proper fertilization envelope assembly. Possible mechanisms, including proper incorporation of the cortical granule exudate into the nascent envelope structure, are discussed.  相似文献

All crested penguins present a unique reversed hatching asynchrony: the larger second-laid egg (B-egg) hatches before the smaller first-laid egg (A-egg). Although both eggs often hatch, the A-chick generally dies of starvation within days after hatching. However, within rockhopper penguins, the population at the Falkland Islands is unique in that some birds manage to raise both chicks. Although it has been suggested that the egg size dimorphism between A- and B-eggs may explain how long both eggs and chicks survive, this hypothesis has never been explicitly tested. We expect that both eggs are retained longer in the less dimorphic clutches than in the more dimorphic ones. In this paper, we have compiled egg measurements for three rockhopper penguin species (Eudyptes chrysocome, E. filholi and E. moseleyi) in order to compare the intra-clutch egg size dimorphism among these species. Furthermore, we have collected new data to compare egg size dimorphism between two populations of E. chrysocome (Falkland Islands versus Staten Island). A-egg volumes are more variable between species and populations than B-egg volumes. E. chrysocome and especially the population from the Falkland Islands produces the largest A-eggs and the least dimorphic eggs. Nevertheless, as differences in A-egg volumes between species and between the populations of Falkland Islands and Staten Island are stronger and more significant than differences in egg dimorphism, we suggest that A-egg volume, more than egg dimorphism, could be one of the factors influencing the prevalence of twins. A large A-egg and/or reduced egg dimorphism is probably necessary to enable rockhopper penguins to raise two chicks, but other reasons may also be involved which enable them to keep both eggs and chicks.  相似文献

Translational diffusion in the plasma membrane of individual egg cells from the sea urchin species Paracentrotus lividus has been studied by fluorescence microphotolysis (FM). In order to probe the lipid phase of the membrane, procedures have been worked out by which the fluorescent analog 3,3′-dioctadecyl-oxatricarbocyanine (C18diO) can be incorporated into the membrane. In the unfertilized egg a fraction R = 0.9 of C18diO was mobile having an apparent diffusion coefficient of D = 6.0 × 10?9 cm2 sec?1. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes after fertilization R and D were reduced to 0.8 and 2.7 × 10?9 cm2 sec?1, respectively. In order to study diffusion of membrane proteins, procedures have been worked out by which the cell surface can be labeled with fluorescein-isothiocyanate (FITC). FITC binds to both the plasma membrane and the vitelline layer. Together with the vitelline layer two-thirds of the FITC-fluorescence could be removed from the egg surface. Gel electropherograms of isolated egg cortices showed various protein bands; however, only two of the protein bands were labeled with FITC. In the unfertilized egg a fraction R = 0.9 of the FITC-labeled membrane proteins was mobile having an apparent diffusion coefficient of D = 35 × 10?11 cm2 sem?1. Fiteen to twenty-five minutes after fertilization R and D were reduced to 0.8 and 7.0 × 10?11 cm2 sec?1, respectively. FITC-labeled proteins of the fertilization envelope were immobile. Our studies have shown (i) that the egg surface can be fluorescently labeled without blocking fertilization and early development, (ii) that the plasma membrane of unfertilized eggs is a fluid environment permitting a rapid movement of lipids and proteins, and (iii) that after fertilization a substantial degree of lipid and protein mobility is maintained.  相似文献

Birds have developed different behavioural strategies to reduce the risk of predation during the breeding period. Bird species that nest in the open often cover their eggs to decrease the risk of predators detecting the clutches. However, in cavity nesters, the potential functions of egg covering have not been explored despite some bird species that nest in cavities also covering their eggs as open nesters do. We analysed whether egg covering is an antipredatory behaviour in the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus). We simulated an increase in the perceived risk of predation at experimental nests by adding predator scent inside the nest boxes during the egg‐laying period, whilst adding lemon essence or water to control nest boxes. Birds exposed to predator chemical cues in the nest of experimental pairs more frequently covered their eggs than birds exposed to an odorous control. These results suggest that egg covering may have evolved as an antipredatory behaviour also in cavity nesters to reduce the risk of egg predation and thus increase reproductive success in birds.  相似文献

The newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, exhibits physiological polyspermic fertilization, in which several sperm enter an egg before egg activation. An intracellular Ca2+ increase occurs as a Ca2+ wave at each sperm entry site in the polyspermic egg. Some Ca2+ waves are preceded by a transient spike-like Ca2+ increase, probably caused by a tryptic protease in the sperm acrosome at the contact of sperm on the egg surface. The following Ca2+ wave was induced by a sperm factor derived from sperm cytoplasm after sperm–egg membrane fusion. The Ca2+ increase in the isolated, cell-free cytoplasm indicates that the endoplasmic reticulum is the major Ca2+ store for the Ca2+ wave. We previously demonstrated that citrate synthase in the sperm cytoplasm is a major sperm factor for egg activation in newt fertilization. In the present study, we found that the activation by the sperm factor as well as by fertilizing sperm was prevented by an inhibitor of citrate synthase, palmitoyl CoA, and that an injection of acetyl-CoA or oxaloacetate caused egg activation, indicating that the citrate synthase activity is necessary for egg activation at fertilization. In the frog, Xenopus laevis, which exhibits monospermic fertilization, we were unable to activate the eggs with either the homologous sperm extract or the Cynops sperm extract, indicating that Xenopus sperm lack the sperm factor for egg activation and that their eggs are insensitive to the newt sperm factor. The mechanism of egg activation in the monospermy of frog eggs is quite different from that in the physiological polyspermy of newt eggs.  相似文献

Potential predictors of egg quality were assessed in whiting Merlangius merlangus L. permitted to spawn in a tank from which eggs were collected. These included fertilisation rate, the proportion of viable buoyant eggs, egg diameter, and egg wet and dry weights; all were influenced by temporal effects and were negatively correlated with days from start of spawning. The spawning period was protracted, from February to June. Mean daily egg production per female was 2.74 ± 2.43 g and 2338 ± 2075 eggs, equivalent to 14.6 ± 13.1 g kg?1 day?1 female?1. Egg diameter was 1.21 ± 0.04 mm, egg wet weight 1.20 ± 0.21 mg, dry weight 0.10 ± 0.02 mg, and mean fertilisation rate and hatching rates were 76.8 and 73.3%, respectively. The incubation period ranged from 72 to 80 degree days and was dependent on temperature (x) and described by the equation y = 25.92 e?0.1219x. Realised fecundity was also assessed to determine if this gave a more accurate measure of reproductive potential, and this was compared with potential fecundity estimated from predictive regressions on fish length from fisheries data. Realised egg production of 20 females of 185 g mean weight and 256 mm fork length was 4 444 360 (95% CL 4 093 961–4 743 018), similar to predicted seasonal egg production based on gravimetric fecundity measurements of wild caught fish.  相似文献
