Birth records of 369 288 calvings of 160 188 Meuse-Rhine-Yssel cows were analysed to assess the influence of factors associated with retained placenta. Special emphasis was placed on the analysis of a subset containing data on births involving a single live calf and an easy or normal calving process. The overall rate of incidence of retained placenta was 6.6%. The rate increased during the years studied. Abortion, stillbirth and multiple birth caused a marked increase in rate, as did difficult calving, caesarean section and fetotomy. After adjusting for these factors, analysis of the corrected subset showed that the rate of incidence increased with age of the dam. Gestation length prior to retention and birth weight were also associated with higher rates. The combination of short gestation length (<270 days) and low birth weight (⩽37 kg) was associated with the highest risk of retained placenta. High birth weights mainly caused higher rates when related to dystocia. The incidence rate in cows delivering a male calf was only slightly higher than in cows delivering a female calf. Cows having retained placenta for a first or second time were three and six times, respectively, as likely to do so again at a subsequent parturition when compared with cows which had not had retained placenta previously.  相似文献

A dairy herd experienced an increased incidence of retained placenta and postpartum metritis during late spring and summer of 1977 and 1978. The incidence of retained placenta and postpartum metritis was 24.05% during the period of May through September compared to 12.24% the rest of the year. The gestation period of cows having retained placenta and postpartum metritis was an average of 5.25 days shorter than that of cows not exhibiting these symptoms. The gestation period of cows calving during the warm season was an average of 2.82 days shorter than that of the cows calving during the cool season. Heat stress resulting in early parturition was the probable cause of this increased incidence of retained placenta and postpartum metritis. The number of days open was influenced both by abnormal postpartum period and season of calving. Cows having retained placenta and metritis were open an average of 31.69 days longer than cows with normal postpartum periods. Cows that calved during the warm season were open an average of 24.42 days longer than those calving during the cool season.  相似文献

A retrospective study involving 2756 pregnancies from two commercial dairy herds in northeastern Spain determined relationships between management, production and reproductive data, and high fertility (conception before 90 days in milk) in high-producing dairy cows. High fertility was registered in 989 (35.9%) cows. The following data were recorded for each animal: herd, repeated animal (cows included two or more times within the study in which data were obtained from different lactational periods), parity (primiparous versus multiparous), previous twinning, reproductive disorders following calving (retained placenta, primary metritis) and at postpartum gynecological examination (incomplete uterine involution, pyometra and ovarian cysts), days in milk at conception, previous estrous synchronization and season of calving and conception. In order to evaluate the possible effect of high production during the peak milk yield on subsequent fertility, daily milk production at Day 50 postpartum was also recorded and cows were classified as high (> or = 50 kg) and low (< 50 kg) producers. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant effects of herd, repeated animal, previous twinning, reproductive disorders such as primary metritis, incomplete uterine involution, pyometra and ovarian cysts, previous estrous synchronization and season of calving and insemination. Based on the odds ratio, the likelihood of high fertility increased in high-producer cows by a factor of 6.8. High fertility was less likely for multiparous cows (by a factor of 0.35) and for cows suffering placenta retention (by a factor of 0.65). High fertile cows produced a mean of 49.5 kg milk at Day 50 postpartum, in contrast to that 43.2 kg milk of the remainder cows. These findings question the negative effect of high production on fertility. Our results indicated that high individual cow milk production can be positively related to high fertility.  相似文献

A total of 54 Holstein-Friesian cows (13 primiparous and 41 multiparous) was used to study maternal plasma oestrone sulphate (E1S) during pregnancy and its relationship to birth weight and viability of calves and time required for placental expulsion after calving. Plasma samples were obtained from the tail vein of cows once every month from days 90 to 180, every 2 weeks from days 181 to 270, and every day from day 270 of gestation to parturition. The E1S concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay, and birth weight, placental measurements, neonatal viability and the period from calving to placental expulsion were recorded. E1S concentrations were correlated positively (0.71 > or = r > or = 0.32, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) with calf birth weight and weights of cotyledons, intercotyledonary membranes and total placenta from days 210 of gestation to 1 day prepartum. Calf birth weight was correlated positively (p < 0.01) with the weight of the cotyledons (r = 0.87), intercotyledonary membranes (r = 0.78) and total placenta (r = 0.88). In addition, E1S concentrations were positively correlated (0.63 > or = r > or = 0.28, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) with the neonatal viability after day 195 of pregnancy, and were negatively correlated (-0.29 > or = r > or = -0.55, P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) with the intervals from parturition to placental expulsion after 225 days of pregnancy. The results suggest that variation among dams for circulating E1S levels during late pregnancy may be caused by variation of placental development and ability for oestrogen production and conjugation, and they may influence fetal growth, neonatal viability and retained placenta.  相似文献

Two experiments were designed to determine whether pretreatment with Opticortenol (OPT), a long-acting corticosteroid, prior to induction of parturition with 25 mg of dexamethasone (DEX) alone or in combination with 500 mug cloprostenol (CLO) would result in a reduced incidence of retained placenta. In Experiment 1, 70% of the cows pretreated with 25 mg OPT on Day 270 of gestation calved before or within 24 hours of the scheduled induction treatment on Day 277. Cows induced to calve with DEX plus CLO without OPT pretreatment had an increased rate of placental retention (P<0.05), whereas, cows that received OPT were not different from the controls. In Experiment 2, cows received either 1 mg/25 kg OPT (high dosage) or 1 mg/50 kg OPT (low dosage) on Day 270 of gestation and were induced with DEX plus CLO on either Day 274 (4 days) or Day 276 (6 days). Cows claved 29.0 to 31.8 hours after induction treatment with 95% beginning to calve between 0700 and 1900 hours. The interval from calving to placental release and the incidence of retained placenta was not different between the high dosage 6-day group (29.4+/-8.2 hours, 29%) and the non-induced control cows (16.1+/-10.7 hours, 5%). When three cows in the high dosage 6-day group that retained their placentas for 30 to 36 hours were considered as not retained, the incidence of placental retention for that group was reduced still further to 17%. First service conception rates and pregnancy rates were lower in cows with retained placentas. Differences were significant (P<0.01) in Experiment 1 but not in Experiment 2. It was concluded that pretreatment with 1 mg/25 kg OPT 6 days prior to induction of parturition with DEX plus CLO in combination results in a predictable calving time, high calf viability, and a low incidence of placental retention.  相似文献

Three trials (A, B and C) were conducted using 162 beef cows and heifers from a fall calving herd to determine the effect of route of administration of dexamethasone on induced parturition and retained placenta. Each trial contained a control group, a treated group receiving dexamethasone intramuscularly and a treated group receiving all or part of the dexamethasone intravenously. Dexamethasone treatment ranged between 20 and 50 mg and resulted in 81 to 100% induced parturition and in an increased incidence (P<.01 and P<.05 in trials A and C, respectively) of retained placenta compared to nontreated controls. Incidence of retained placenta in dexamethasone treated groups ranged between 23 and 78%, and in control groups between 0 and 6%. Route of dexamethasone injection did not affect either the incidence of cows responding with parturition or the incidence of retained placenta. Neither subsequent reproduction of cows nor growth performance of calves was significantly affected by induced parturition or route of dexamethasone injection.  相似文献

A prospective ecopathogical survey was conducted in French commercial dairy herds located in Brittany. Previous production and reproduction data and blood parameters were used to identify predictive indicators of risk for retained placenta (RP) in Black-Pied cows. All the cows had delivered a single calf after a dry period of at least 30 d and had produced milk for at least 30 d. The cows with and without retained placenta were allocated to groups according to herd and interval between antepartum blood sampling and calving. Two groups of cows with (RP-positive group, n = 45) and without (RP-negative group, n = 184) retained placenta were compared. Univariate analysis indicated lower plasma glucose concentration, lower monocyte count and higher red blood cell count in the RP-positive group. A multiple logistic regression was run, with herd and blood sampling to calving interval as the fixed effects. It showed that a high red cell count and a low monocyte count were predictive indicators for retained placenta risk, which was found to be lower at third calving. Relationships of circulating indicators with placental retention etiology are discussed in terms of polyunsaturated fatty acid imbalance, its consequences on monocyte and erythrocyte functions, uterine motility and circulatory disturbances.  相似文献

Infertility has been often correlated to a rising milk yield in high producing dairy cattle. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, using logistic regression procedures, the effects of several management indicators on the fertility of four dairy herds in northeastern Spain. Data derived from 10,965 artificial insemination (AI). The factors examined were: herd, milking frequency (three versus two milkings per day), lactation number, previous twinning and disorders such as placenta retention and pyometra, milk production at AI, the inseminating bull, season (warm versus cool period) and year effects, AI technician and repeat breeding syndrome (cows undergoing four or more AI). Our findings indicated no effects on fertility of the herd, year of AI, previous twining, placenta retention and pyometra and milk production at AI. Based on the odds ratios, the likelihood of pregnancy decreased: in cows milked three times per day (by a factor of 0.62); for each one unit increase in lactation number (by a factor of 0.92); for inseminations performed during the warm period (by a factor of 0.67); in repeat breeder cows (by a factor of 0.73); and when 3 of the 45 inseminating bulls included in the study were used (by factors of 0.35, 0.43 and 0.44, respectively). Of the 13 AI technicians participating in the study, 3 were related to a fertility rate improved by odds ratios of 1.86, 1.84 and 1.30, respectively, whereas 2 technicians gave rise to fertility rates reduced by odds ratios of 0.64 and 0.49, respectively. Under our study conditions, management practices were able to compensate for the effects of previous twining and reproductive disorders such as placenta retention and pyometra. However, fertility was significantly affected by the factors milking frequency, AI technician, inseminating bull, repeat breeding syndrome, lactation number and AI season.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a monensin controlled-release capsule on the incidence of retained fetal membranes (RFM), milk yield and conception rate at first service (CRFS). The study was conducted during May to August 2004 in a large dairy herd in Chihuahua, Mexico. Cows (n = 2,025) from 20 to 30 d before expected parturition were randomly assigned to either a treatment or a control group. The treated group (n = 1,010) received orally a capsule of monensin that released 335 mg/d for 95 d. Control cows (no capsule, n = 1,015) were randomly assigned and matched by parity. Outcome variables were the incidence of RFM, first three test day milk and CRFS. Monensin decreased the incidence of RFM by 3.9% only in multiparous cows. Therefore, multiparous cows treated with monensin were 0.78 times (95% C.I. = 0.71-0.86) as likely as control multiparous cows to develop RFM. Overall, milk yield was negatively affected by the RFM condition, but it was improved by monensin only in multiparous cows with RFM at test day 1. Conception rate at first service was depressed by 10.6% in multiparous cows with RFM. However, in RFM cows treated with monensin, CRFS improved to the level of treated cows without RFM.  相似文献

Reproductive and biochemical parameters were studied at parturition in multiparous single-carrying Holstein cows. These were compared in animals with (n=14) and without (n=40) a retained placenta and then according to 2 prepartum diets (corn silage/concentrate, n=44; grass silage/concentrate, n=10) in cows with and without retained placentas. Cows with retained placentas had a 4-day shorter gestation period and gave birth to 5 kg-lighter calves than cows without retained placentas. Furthermore, their plasma PGFM -PgF2alpha main metabolite- (3325 vs 5675 pg/ml; P<0.01) and glucose (79.2 vs 95.2 mg/100ml; P<0.05) levels were lower and their protein concentration was higher (85.7 vs 76.5 g/l; P<0.05) than those of cows without retained placentas. Retained placenta incidence in cows fed grass-silage was higher than in cows fed corn-silage (60% vs 18.2%; P<0.05). Cows with retained placentas and fed corn silage had shorter gestation lengths, gave birth to lighter calves, and had less circulating glucose at calving (77.6 vs 96.5 mg/100ml; P<0.05) than cows without retained placentas and fed the same forage. Cows with retained placentas and fed grass silage had less PGFM (2172 vs 4530 pg/ml; P<0.05) than cows without retained placentas and fed the same forage. Calving number, sex ratio and preceeding milk yield were not different between the two groups of cows whatever their prepartum diet. In the dairy cow, retained placenta could be due to a PgF2alpha or an energy deficiency at calving. Roles of the dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids toward the Pg synthesis and of the energy supply before calving in relation to retained placenta are discussed here.  相似文献

Seventy-one pairs of ewes with or without retention of fetal membranes in the previous lambing season, were included in a cohort study of 25 flocks in southern Greece; in 27 pairs regulation of the breeding cycle was applied, whilst in the other 44 pairs natural mating took place. The following measures of reproductive performance were calculated: cycling rate, mating rate, return-to-estrus rate, abortion rate, lambing rate, total lambs born per ewe, liveborn lambs per ewe, stillbirth rate, lamb-bodyweight per ewe; furthermore, the incidence risk of retention of fetal membranes during the lambing examined in this study was also calculated. No statistically significant differences were observed in the reproductive performance among ewes that had or had not retained their fetal membranes during the previous lambing, whether the breeding cycle was regulated or not. The incidence risk of retention of fetal membranes among ewes that had not retained its placenta in the previous lambing was 1.6%, whilst that among ewes that had retained its placenta in the previous lactation was 0%. It is concluded that retention of fetal membranes did not appear to adversely affect subsequent reproductive performance of ewes.  相似文献

Prenatal development is known to be extremely sensitive to maternal and environmental challenges. In this study, we hypothesize that body growth and lactation during gestation in cattle reduce nutrient availability for the pregnant uterus, with consequences for placental development. Fetal membranes of 16 growing heifers and 27 fully grown cows of the Belgian Blue (BB) breed were compared to determine the effect of body growth on placental development. Furthermore, the fetal membranes of 49 lactating Holstein Friesian (HF) cows and 27 HF heifers were compared to study the impact of dam lactation compared to dam body growth. After parturition, calf birth weight and body measurements of dam and calf were recorded, as well as weight of total fetal membranes, cotyledons and intercotyledonary membranes. All cotyledons were individually measured to calculate both the surface of each individual cotyledon and the total cotyledonary surface per placenta. Total cotyledonary surface was unaffected by breed or the breed×parity interaction. Besides a 0.3 kg lower cotyledonary weight (P=0.007), heifer placentas had a smaller total cotyledonary surface compared with placentas of cows (0.48±0.017 v. 0.54±0.014 m2, respectively, P<0.001). Within the BB breed, fetal membranes of heifers had a 1.5 kg lower total weight and 1.0 kg lower intercotyledonary membrane weight (P<0.005) compared with cows. A cotyledon number of only 91±5.4 was found in multiparous BB dams, while growing BB heifers had a higher cotyledon number (126±6.7, P<0.001), but a greater proportion of smaller cotyledons (<40 cm2). Within the HF breed, no parity effect on intercotyledonary membrane weight, cotyledon number and individual cotyledonary surface was found. Placental efficiency (calf weight/total cotyledonary surface) was similar in HF and BB heifers but significantly higher in multiparous BB compared with multiparous HF dams (106.0±20.45 v. 74.3±12.27 kg/m2, respectively, P<0.001). Furthermore, a seasonal effect on placental development was found, with winter and spring placentas having smaller cotyledons than summer and fall placentas (P<0.001). Main findings of the present study are that lactation and maternal growth during gestation entail a comparable nutrient diverting constraint, which might alter placental development. However, results suggest that the placenta is able to manage this situation through two potential compensation mechanisms. In early pregnancy the placenta might cope by establishing a higher number of cotyledons, while in late gestation a compensatory expansion of the cotyledonary surface is suggested to meet the nutrient demand of the fetus.  相似文献

The objective was to identify postpartum risk factors between nutritional imbalance and health disorders affecting first-service conception risk (FSCR) in 21 commercial Holstein herds in Reunion Island. Multivariate logistic-regression models including herd as a random effect were used to analyze the relationship between FSCR and energy status, nitrogen status, hepatic function, mineral deficiencies, and postpartum health disorders. Two models (A and B) were built on two subsets of data (n=446 and n=863) with risk indicators measured during the first month of lactation and around time of first service, respectively, adjusted for season, breed, parity, origin, milk yield, calving to first service interval (CS1), and type of estrus (spontaneous vs. induced). The averaged conception risk was 0.266+/-0.015 (n=913) (mean+/-S.E.M.). In both models, FSCR was decreased by CS1 < or = 60 d and induced estrus. In model A, FSCR was decreased (p<0.05) for cows with mean cumulative 100 d daily milk yield < or =23 kg/d and >27 kg/d, with losses of body condition score >1.5, and with retained placenta. In model B, FSCR was decreased (p<0.05) for cows inseminated during wet season, previously raised out of the farm as nulliparous, with blood magnesium concentration < or =0.9 mmol/L, and for high-yielding cows (100 d milk yield > 27 kg/d) with glutamate deshydrogenase>17 UI/L. Hence, high-body-lipid mobilization during the first month of lactation was a strong nutritional predictor of low FSCR together with liver damage in high-yielding cows. Interestingly, our models revealed that infertility is better related to nutritional factors than to postpartum health disorders occurrence.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the concentration of selenium in Holstein-Friesian cows at different stages of lactation. Selenium was determined spectrofluorimetrically and GSH-Px activity using a Sigma CGP1 Glutathione Peroxidase Cellular Activity Assay kit. Mean serum selenium concentration was highest in early-lactation multiparous cows (0.18 μg/ml) and the lowest in dry cows (0.111 μg/ml). In early lactation, serum selenium concentration was significantly (P ≤ 0.01) higher in multiparous cows than in cows from the other groups. Mean GSH-Px activity in the serum of dry cows was over twice lower than in late-lactation cows (P ≤ 0.01) and over four times lower than in first-calving heifers and multiparous cows in early lactation (P ≤ 0.01). The coefficients of Spearman's rank correlation between GSH-Px activity and selenium concentration in the cows at different stages of lactation were not significant. A significant (P ≤ 0.01) mean positive correlation (0.46) was found between GSH-Px activity and serum selenium concentration for all the cows analysed together. The highest Se concentration and GSH-Px activity found in the serum of cows during the first stage of lactation may suggest that the generation of reactive oxygen species and their derivatives was higher during this period compared to the other stages, thus placing the cows at a greater risk of oxidative stress. It is therefore essential to give particular attention during this period to meeting the cows' requirement for selenium and other feed components that increase, directly or indirectly, the capacity of the body's antioxidant system.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine feeding factors connected with differences in the fertility of Israeli Kibbutz dairy herds. In an epidemiological case-control survey, data from 30, low-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 35% in multiparous cows were compared with the data from 30, high-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 48% in multiparous cows. Nutritional factors accounted for 67% of the differences between low-fertility and high-fertility herds in the overall conception rate of multiparous cows, while only 4.8% could be related to the body condition during the dry period. Among the factors which occurred more frequently in the low-fertility than in the high-fertility herds were 1) a higher average protein density and lower energy/protein ratio was fed during lactation and 2) a single feeding group was maintained for all lactating cows. 3) There were phytoestrogens in the silage or alfalfa hay, fed during lactation. 4) Faulty dry period was instituted, which was defined as the presence of at least one of the following three practices: a) the daily feed was above 3 kg of high lactation mix; b) more than 15 Mcal of net energy per day was given during the first part of the dry period; c) more than 30% of the cows were obese during the dry period. Three or more risk factors were found in one high-fertility herd and in 20 low-fertility herds. This finding emphasizes the importance of identifying and removing risk factors as a possible means for improving the reproductive performance of herds.  相似文献

The fertility of lactating Holstein cows is severely reduced during periods of heat stress. Despite this reduction in fertility, however, some inseminations conducted during heat stress result in successful pregnancies from which heifer calves are born. Many of these heifer calves are retained and raised to enter the milking herd as replacement animals. Heat stress experienced by these females around the time they were conceived may confer long-lasting effects that alter subsequent milk production capacity. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between periconceptional heat stress and subsequent milk production of primiparous cows. National Dairy Herd Improvement Association data was obtained from Dairy Records Management Systems. Records included Holstein cows that had completed at least one lactation in one of three states with large populations of dairy cattle and which are known for having hot, humid summers: Georgia, Florida or Texas. Dates of conception were calculated by subtracting 276 d from the recorded birth date of each individual cow. Records for cows conceived within the months of June, July, and August were retained as heat stress-conceived (HSC) cows (n = 94,440); cows conceived within the months of December, January, and February were retained as thermoneutral-conceived (TNC) contemporaries (n = 141,365). In order to account for the effects of environmental conditions on total milk production for a given lactation, cows were blocked by season of calving (winter, spring, summer or fall). Adjusted 305-day mature-equivalent milk production was evaluated with a mixed model ANOVA using SAS, in which random effects were used to account for variability between herds. Of the cows that calved in the summer, fall and winter, TNC cows had higher milk yield than the HSC cows in all states. Interestingly, the cows that calved in the spring presented a unique relationship, with HSC cows producing more milk. Overall however, heat stress at the time of conception is associated with lower milk production during the first lactation. While this association does not prove cause and effect, it does provide justification for additional investigation into whether heat stress around the time of conception results in long-term, detrimental consequences for the conceptus.  相似文献

The transition from gestation to lactation is marked by significant physiological changes for the individual cow such that disease incidence is highest in early lactation. Around the time of calving, cows rely on mobilisation of body energy reserves to fill the energy deficit created by an increase in nutrient demands at a time of restricted feed intake. It is well established that monitoring of body energy reserves in lactation is an important component of herd health management. However, despite their influence on future health and productivity, monitoring of body energy reserves in the dry period is often sparse. Further, there is increasing concern that current dry off management is inappropriate for modern cattle and may influence future disease risk. This study aimed to identify candidate indicators of early lactation production disease from body energy data collected in the dry period and production data recorded at the time of dry off. Retrospective analysis was performed on 482 cow-lactations collected from a long-term Holstein-Friesian genetic and management systems project, the Langhill herd in Scotland. Cow-lactations were assigned to one of four health groups based on health status in the first 30 days of lactation. These four groups were as follows: healthy, reproductive tract disorders (retained placenta and metritis), subclinical mastitis and metabolic disorders (ketosis, hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia and left displaced abomasum). ANOVA, employing a GLM was used to determine effects for the candidate indicator traits. Cows which were diagnosed with a reproductive tract disorder in the first 30 days of lactation experienced a significantly greater loss in body energy content, body condition score and weight in the preceding dry period than healthy cows. The rate of change in body energy content during the first 15 days of the dry period was −18.26 MJ/day for cows which developed reproductive tract disorder compared with +0.63 MJ/day for healthy cows. Cows diagnosed with subclinical mastitis in the first 30 days of lactation had significantly greater milk yield at dry off in the previous lactation than cows that developed a reproductive tract disorder or metabolic disease in addition to a significantly higher yield to body energy content ratio at dry off than healthy cows. Physiological and production traits recorded in the lactation and dry period preceding a disease event differed between cows which developed different diseases post-calving. Differences in these traits allow the development of new disease indicators for use in models for the prediction of disease risk in the transition period.  相似文献

Placentomes were obtained from 20 cows with retained placenta (9 following normal birth, 5 after abortion and 6 with dystocia), and this material was examined by light microscopy. Histologic changes that were consistently seen in placentomes of cows with retained placenta after normal birth included vascular changes (edema, thrombosis and vasculitis) and the presence of numerous clumps of bacterialcolonies in the connective tissue of the caruncles and cotyledons. Only a few binucleate cells were seen in these cases. In placentomes obtained from cows with retained placenta after abortion, there were instances of focal necrosis of the fetal villi and the presence of variable numbers of binucleate cells. Vascular changes and numerous clumps of bacterial colonies in the caruncles and cotyledons were also noted. The changes in placentomes obtained from cows with retained placenta and dystocia included the presence of numerous binucleate cells, infiltration of polymorphonuclear cells in the connective tissue of both the fetal and maternal villi, vascular changes, and the presence of extensive necrosis and numerous clumps of bacterial colonies. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were encountered in the number of binucleate cells in the various groups. Binucleate cells appear to be involved in the process of placental separation in cows with retained placenta.  相似文献

Twenty pluriparous, spring-calving Brahman cows were used to determine luteal competency, as measured by serum progesterone concentrations, during the first and the second postpartum estrous cycles. Prior to and after calving, all cows were maintained in good body condition on Coastal bermudagrass pasture (IFN 1-00-703). The calves were allowed to suckle ad libitum, and sterile marker bulls were maintained with the cow herd as an aid in estrus detection throughout the trial. Cow weight and body condition score were recorded within 24 hours after calving and again at the first behavioral estrus observed. From day 1 through day 14 (day 0 = estrus) of both the first and the second postpartum estrous cycles, blood samples were collected from each cow, processed to yield serum and analyzed by radioimmunoassay for progesterone concentrations. There was a higher incidence of abnormal estrous cycles following the first postpartum estrus (35%) than following the second (5%) postpartum estrus (P<0.05). The abnormal first estrous cycles were characterized by either a short luteal phase (four cows) or by standing estrus behavior without luteal tissue formation (three cows). When serum progesterone concentrations were compared for all cows during the first estrous cycle with those during the second estrous cycle, there was less progesterone released during the cycle (P<0.05) and lower peak progesterone concentrations (P<0.10) during the first estrous cycle. However, if the abnormal cows were excluded from the analyses, there was no difference (P>0.10) in either progesterone concentrations through the 14 days measured or in peak progesterone concentrations between the first and the second postpartum estrous cycles. It can be concluded from this study that the higher incidence of abnormal luteal function following the first postpartum estrus may contribute to the decreased conception rates observed when cows are bred at their first postpartum estrus.  相似文献

Parturicion was induced in pregnant beef cows and heifers with 15 mg of flumethasone to test: 1) the effects of an orally active antibiotic on flumethasone induction of parturition success rate and incidence of retained placenta and 2) the effects of injectable long acting and orally active antibiotics on subsequent fertility and offspring performance. Gestation length and birth weight were not significantly changed. There were no significant differences among calving ease scores even though induction significantly improved vigor. Induction caused a significant increase in the incidence of retained placental membranes. Pregnancy rate (P<.01) and conceptions per service (P<.05) were lower for those animals affected with retained placentas. There were no significant differences among actual weaning weights for the three treatment groups or between adjusted weaning weights for the control and the orally active antibiotic groups, however, the adjusted weaning weights of calves from cows receiving an orally active antibiotic were significantly greater than those receiving an injectable long acting antibiotic (P<.10).  相似文献
