The diet of the New Zealand orange perch, Lepidoperca aurantia, was determined from examination of stomach contents of 248 specimens, primarily adults, sampled by bottom trawl on Chatham Rise, east of South Island, New Zealand, over three years. The diet was dominated by euphausiids (87% of total prey weight), with the remainder comprising mostly hyperiid amphipods (4%) and semi-pelagic teleost fish (7%). Orange perch are selective feeders specialising on small semi-pelagic crustaceans. They have an estimated trophic level of 3.4, classifying them as low-level carnivores. A multivariate analysis examined the influence on diet of a set of biological and environmental predictors; year and time of day were found to be the most influential variables, explaining 24% of the deviance in diet.  相似文献

The diet of smooth skate Dipturus innominatus was determined from examination of stomach contents of 321 specimens of 29·3-152·0 cm pelvic length, sampled from research and commercial trawlers at depths of 231-789 m on Chatham Rise, New Zealand. The diet was dominated by the benthic decapods Metanephrops challengeri and Munida gracilis, the natant decapod Campylonotus rathbunae and fishes from 17 families, of which hoki Macruronus novaezelandiae, sea perch Helicolenus barathri, various Macrouridae and a variety of discarded fishes were the most important. Multivariate analyses indicated the best predictors of diet variability were D. innominatus length and a spatial model. The diet of small D. innominatus was predominantly small crustaceans, with larger crustaceans, fishes and then scavenged discarded fishes increasing in importance as D. innominatus got larger. Scavenged discards were obvious as fish heads or tails only, or skeletal remains after filleting, often from pelagic species. Demersal fish prey were most frequent on the south and west Chatham Rise, in areas where commercial fishing was most active. Dipturus innominatus are highly vulnerable to overfishing, but discarding practices by commercial fishing vessels may provide a positive feedback to populations through improved scavenging opportunities.  相似文献

A number of techniques have been employed to measure biomass of orange roughy in New Zealand. Time series of stratified random trawl surveys in a number of areas over periods of 5–10 years have given relative abundance indices, which have been used in stock reduction analyses to estimate true biomass. This has given confident results for the Chatham Rise stock, and surveys have also shown strong trends in other regions. Acoustic surveys have been carried out on three grounds. They can give relative indices of orange roughy abundance in areas of fiat or medium sloping bottom, and have the potential for estimation of absolute biomass from a single survey. Egg production surveys have been employed on two grounds on the east coast of the North Island, where conditions of tight spawning aggregations and steep bottom topography have limited the success of other methods. Both daily fecundity reduction and annual egg production methods have been used. These have given estimates of true biomass from one-off surveys, although results are imprecise. Both unstandardized and standardized analyses of commercial catch-per-unit-effort data have given relative indices of abundance, which have formed an important part of stock assessment for several fisheries. No single technique used to measure the size of orange roughy stocks has proven ideal or appropriate in all New Zealand situations. All have advantages and disadvantages, depending on the characteristics of the fishing area and fish behaviour. For two areas, a combination of methods have been applied, which has given more confident results than those from a single technique.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic connectivity are increasingly considered in the design of marine protected areas (MPAs) in both shallow and deep water. In the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), deep-sea communities at upper bathyal depths (<2000 m) are vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbance from fishing and potential mining operations. Currently, patterns of genetic connectivity among deep-sea populations throughout New Zealand’s EEZ are not well understood. Using the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I and 16S rRNA genes as genetic markers, this study aimed to elucidate patterns of genetic connectivity among populations of two common benthic invertebrates with contrasting life history strategies. Populations of the squat lobster Munida gracilis and the polychaete Hyalinoecia longibranchiata were sampled from continental slope, seamount, and offshore rise habitats on the Chatham Rise, Hikurangi Margin, and Challenger Plateau. For the polychaete, significant population structure was detected among distinct populations on the Chatham Rise, the Hikurangi Margin, and the Challenger Plateau. Significant genetic differences existed between slope and seamount populations on the Hikurangi Margin, as did evidence of population differentiation between the northeast and southwest parts of the Chatham Rise. In contrast, no significant population structure was detected across the study area for the squat lobster. Patterns of genetic connectivity in Hyalinoecia longibranchiata are likely influenced by a number of factors including current regimes that operate on varying spatial and temporal scales to produce potential barriers to dispersal. The striking difference in population structure between species can be attributed to differences in life history strategies. The results of this study are discussed in the context of existing conservation areas that are intended to manage anthropogenic threats to deep-sea benthic communities in the New Zealand region.  相似文献

The relationship between species diversity and environmental parameters is poorly understood for the mobile macrofauna of deep‐sea habitats due to under‐sampling and subsequent lack of accurate taxonomic information. To redress this, cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) DNA sequences were used to estimate species diversity and to compare phoxocephalid amphipod assemblages among 20 stations encompassing a range of environmental conditions. Two regions, east (Chatham Rise) and west (Challenger Plateau) of New Zealand were sampled to depths of 200–1200 m with an epibenthic sled. Using a comparison among identified morphospecies, we found a clear gap in sequence divergences between 6% and 13% and used a 6% threshold to designate molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs), as a surrogate to putative species. DNA sequences (n = 297) revealed high total diversity (n = 49 MOTUs), as well as high beta diversity (28 MOTUs found at single location only). Novel phoxocephalid MOTUs were found at most stations, especially on Challenger Plateau and the flanks of Chatham Rise. Analyses of interstation assemblages revealed a major split between regions, indicating minimal overlap in taxon distributions. A cluster of highly similar stations was identified, broadly distributed over the crest of Chatham Rise, in association with elevated food availability, probably resulting from higher surface productivity and relatively shallow depth. Accordingly, multivariate analysis revealed a strong correlation between phoxocephalid assemblages and food supply. This study highlights the value of molecular approaches, in particular COI sequences, for quantifying and comparing diversity in under‐sampled and/or under‐studied taxa.  相似文献

We evaluate hypotheses for meso-scale spatial structure in an orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) stock using samples collected during research trawl surveys off the east coast of New Zealand. Distance-based linear models and generalised additive models were used to identify the most significant biological, environmental, and temporal predictors of variability in diet, proportion of stomachs containing prey, standardised weight of prey, fish somatic weight, fish total weight, and reproductive activity. The diet was similar to that observed elsewhere, and varied with ontogeny, depth, and surface water temperature. Smaller sized and female orange roughy in warmer bottom water were most likely to contain food. Fish condition and reproductive activity were highest at distances more than 20 km from the summit of the hills. Trawl survey catches indicated greater orange roughy densities in hill strata, suggesting hill habitat was favoured. However, analyses of feeding, condition, and reproductive activity indicated hill fish were not superior, despite fish densities on hills being reduced by fishing which, in principle, should have reduced intra-specific competition for food and other resources. Hypotheses for this result include: (1) fish in relatively poor condition visit hills to feed and regain condition and then leave, or (2) commercial fishing has disturbed feeding aggregations and/or caused habitat damage, making fished hills less productive. Mature orange roughy were observed on both flat and hill habitat during periods outside of spawning, and if this spatial structure was persistent then a proportion of the total spawning stock biomass would remain unavailable to fisheries targeting hills. Orange roughy stock assessments informed only by data from hills may well be misleading.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of black oreo and smooth oreo sampled at depths of 600–1200 m from the south-west Chatham Rise in 1983 are described, with notes on prey of eight other fish species. All these fish species fed benthopelagically. Black oreo preyed on hyperiid amphipods, salps and natant decapod crustaceans; smooth oreo on salps and amphipods. Dietary composition of both species changed with size of fish. Aspects of feeding relationships between the fish species were examined including dietary similarity and prey-size selection. Findings are compared with results of research on other New Zealand deepwater fish species.  相似文献

The diet of the Imperial Shag Phalacrocorax atriceps was studied on New Island, Falkland/Malvinas Islands during the 2008/2009 breeding season, with some additional data from 2007/2008. The diet comprised a large variety of prey, mainly fish, crustaceans and squid. In contrast to other species of the blue-eyed shag complex, prey not only consisted of benthic organisms but also included pelagic prey. Different sampling techniques were combined in order to obtain a comprehensive overview of the diet. Pellets, regurgitations and stomach contents yielded different results. We discuss the causes for these variations including different sample availability over time. In particular, the stomach analyses seem to overestimate the importance of squid based on the occurrence of squid beaks. For the pellet analyses, lobster krill accounted for the majority of the prey remains except during the second half of December (i.e. when young chicks were being attended), when fish was more important.  相似文献

Diets of 8 rarely sampled species of grenadiers were examined from the lower continental slope (1178 to 1837 m) on Chatham Rise, New Zealand and includes the first known records of the diet of Bathygadus cottoides, Coryphaenoides mcmillani, C. murrayi, and Idiolophorhynchus andriashevi. Feeding habits of six deep-sea demersal trawl-caught macrourids on Chatham Rise, New Zealand, were examined from stomach contents during the austral summer. Three species were predominantly benthic foragers: smallbanded rattail Coelorinchus parvifasciatus on small epifaunal crustaceans, twosaddle rattail Coelorinchus biclinozonalis on epifaunal decapods and humpback rattail Coryphaenoides dossenus on benthic fishes and epifaunal decapods. Three species were predominantly benthopelagic foragers: banded rattail Coelorinchus fasciatus on hyperiid and gammarid amphipods and calanoid copepods, blackspot rattail Lucigadus nigromaculatus on small epifaunal crustaceans and suprabenthic mysids and Mahia rattail Coelorinchus matamua on epifaunal decapods and calanoid copepods. The most important predictors of diet variability were identified using distance-based linear models and included areal predictors in C. parvifasciatus, L. nigromaculatus and C. dossenus, fish size in C. dossenus, C. biclinozonalis and C. matamua, sample year in C. biclinozonalis and C. fasciatus and depth in C. matamua. Results are compared with previously published data for four other macrourid species from the same study area. The 10 grenadier species comprise benthic, benthopelagic and mesopelagic foraging guilds. Fecundity of orange roughy in 1987–1989 adjusted for standard length (S.L.) varied significantly between New South Wales (42 787 eggs female−1) South Australia (35 339 eggs female−1) and east Tasmania (31 085 eggs female−1). Only 10-17% of the variability in fecundity of eastern Tasmania orange roughy was explained by s.l . in any year from 1987–1992. However, liver condition and age of the fish, in combination with s.l ., explained 27% of the variation in fecundity. Fecundity declined in fish over 60 years old. It was also significantly correlated with lipid levels in the ovary, in particular, with triacylglycerol as a proportion of the total lipid fraction. Significant interannual changes in fecundity appeared to be related to the impact of fishing. From 1987–1992, the orange roughy stock off east Tasmania was reduced by 50% by the fishery, and mean fecundity increased 20% over that period. This compensatory increase in individual fecundity, combined with an apparent increase in the proportion of females spawning annually from 54 to 71%, limited the decline in the population's egg production over this period to approximately 15%.  相似文献

Three hundred and seventy-three females and 385 malesof Gollum attenuatus were caught with bottom longlines from the Challenger Plateau, Wanganella Bank and Three Kings Ridge around New Zealand. The sharks ranged in size from 440 to 1092 mm TL for females and 442 to 1067 mm TL for males. Catch rates (number of fish per 100 hooks) were 0.41 for the Challenger Plateau, 0.14 for the Wanganella Bank, and 4.52 for the Three Kings Ridge. The sex ratio was 1:1. In terms of 100-m depth intervals,G. attenuatus was most abundant in 500 to 599 m depths. There was a marked decrease in catch rates with increased distance of the hooks from the bottom. Stomachs contained such varied items as sharks, teleost fishes, gastropods, squids, octopi, decapods, isopods, brittle stars, and human garbage. The data in this study suggest thatG. attenuatus consumed, in order of importance, fishes and crustaceans.  相似文献

The diets of black oreo Allocyttus niger, smooth oreo Pseudocyttus maculatus, spiky oreo Neocyttus rhomboidalis and orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus were determined from examination of contents of 240, 311, 76 and 415 non‐empty stomachs, from fishes sampled by bottom trawl on Chatham Rise to the east of South Island, New Zealand. Hoplostethus atlanticus had an opportunistic predatory strategy with a broad diet dominated by prawns and mesopelagic teleosts, but with substantial components of mysids and cephalopods. Pseudocyttus maculatus was strongly specialized on gelatinous zooplankton (jellyfish and salps). Allocyttus niger consumed mainly salps and hyperiid amphipods, and to a lesser extent fishes, prawns, mysids and copepods. Neocyttus rhomboidalis primarily consumed salps, along with mysids, euphausiids and fishes. Only P. maculatus did not exhibit significant ontogenetic variation in diet. The diets were also influenced by year and bottom depth. Differences in the distributions and diets of the four species probably reduce conflicts in resource use.  相似文献

The diet of the alfonsino Beryx splendens was determined from examination of stomach contents of 287 specimens of 17 to 48 cm fork length (LF) sampled by bottom trawl on the Chatham Rise to the east of New Zealand. Prey items were predominantly crustaceans and mesopelagic fishes. The most important prey species by mass was Sergestes spp. prawns, followed by the myctophid Lampanyctodes hectoris, and then Pasiphaea spp. prawns. Multivariate analyses indicated that small crustaceans (euphausiids and amphipods) were most important in the diet of smaller B. splendens (100–424 g, 17–26·5 cm), with larger prawn species and mesopelagic fishes most important for larger fish (425–2070 g, 27–46 cm). Moon phase and bottom temperature also explained some of the variability in diet, but the moon phase effect was difficult to explain, and the bottom temperature effect may have been confounded, to some extent, with LF. The results indicated that B. splendens were moderately selective feeders that foraged primarily in the mesopelagic layers. The diet of New Zealand B. splendens is generally similar to those reported from other areas, i.e. dominated by mesopelagic crustaceans and fishes, and with a transition from small crustaceans to fishes with increasing predator size.  相似文献

Ling and hake are tertiary consumers, and as a result both may have an important structuring role in marine communities. The diets of 2064 ling and 913 hake from Chatham Rise, New Zealand, were determined from examination of stomach contents. Ling was a benthic generalist, and hake a demersal piscivore. The diet of ling was characterised by benthic crustaceans, mainly Munida gracilis and Metanephrops challengeri, and demersal fishes, mainly Macrourids and scavenged offal from fishing vessels. The diet of hake was characterised by teleost fishes, mainly macrourids and merlucciids. Multivariate analyses using distance-based linear models found the most important predictors of diet variability were depth, fish length, and vessel type (whether the sample was collected from a commercial or research vessel) for ling, and fish length and vessel type for hake. There was no interspecific predation between ling and hake, and resource competition was largely restricted to macrourid prey, although the dominant macrourid species predated by ling and hake were different. Cluster analysis of average diet of intraspecific groups of ling and hake confirmed the persistent diet separation. Although size is a central factor in determining ecological processes, similar sized ling and hake had distinctly different foraging ecology, and therefore could influence the ecosystem in different ways, and be unequally affected by ecosystem fluctuations.  相似文献

Stomach content data from 7283 spiny dogfish, Squalus ucunthius Linnaeus, from east coast South Island of New Zealand are presented. The major dietary components based on occurrence were 60% crustaceans and 15% fish. The principal food items were the post-larval phase of the squat lobster, Munida greguria Fabricius (30%), and the euphausiid, Nyctiphanes australis Sars (20%). Commercial fish species contributed to less than 5% of the diet. Diet of dogfish varied with dogfish size and sex. Compared to northern hemisphere studies, spiny dogfish in this study area had (1) a high proportion of crustaceans in their diet, (2) a relatively low percentage of empty stomachs, (3) a relatively high incidence of cannibalism.  相似文献

Analysis of diet composition and overlap in four species of the genus Diplectrum (Perciformes: Serranidae) in the Mexican Central Pacific. The information of trophic interactions among species is essential to understand ecosystem function. To assess this in four Diplectrum species, we analyzed the stomach contents of 397 individuals caught using shrimp trawling nets off the coasts of Jalisco and Colima, Mexico. Main food component of D. eumelum were fish of the Order Pleuronectiformes, followed by shrimps (Metapenaeopsis spp). D. euryplectrum feeds mainly on crustaceans, with stomatopods (Squilla mantoidea) as main food items followed by shrimps and brachyurans. Fish and polychaetes had a low representation in the diet of this species. D. labarum feeds mainly on crustaceans, mollusks and fish. The stomatopod Eurysquilla veleronis contributed to with a high diet percentage by weight, followed by shrimps (mostly Solenoceraflorae) and brachyurans, as well as the squid Lolliguncula diomedae. Fishes (Ophidion spp.) were also an important component of the diet of this species. The most common preys of D. rostrum were crustaceans, mollusks, polychaetes and fish. The squid Lolliguncula diomedae and fishes of genus Ophidion were also well represented in the diet. Diet breadth index yielded significant differences between species. The number of diet items varied from 16 in D. euryplectrum to 6 in D. eumelum. The average value of overlap (0.247) was not significantly different (p = 0.118) from the expected one for a null model (0.174). The observed variance of the overlap index (0.071) was significantly higher (V = 0.025, p = 0.0004) than the value expected for a null model.  相似文献

Fatty acid and stable isotope analyses have previously been used to investigate foraging patterns of fish, birds, marine mammals and most recently cephalopod species. To evaluate the application of these methods for dietary studies in squid, it is important to understand the degree to which fatty acid and stable isotope signatures of prey species are reflected in the squids' tissue. Four groups of Lolliguncula brevis were fed on prey species with distinctly different fatty acid and stable isotope profiles over 30 consecutive days. One group of squid were fed fish for fifteen days, followed by crustaceans for a further fifteen days. A second and third group were fed exclusively on fish or crustaceans for thirty days. And a fourth group was fed on a mixture of fish and crustaceans for thirty days. Analysis of squid tissue showed that, after 10 days of feeding, fatty acid profiles of squid tended to reflect those of their prey. Squid that fed on a single prey type, i.e. fish or crustacean, showed only minor modifications in fatty acid proportions after the initial change and fatty acid profiles were clearly distinguishable between the two feeding groups. Shifts in fatty acid proportions towards respective prey profiles could clearly be observed in squid the diet of which was swapped after 15 days. Clear differences could also be seen in fatty acid profiles of squid feeding on a mixed diet with trends towards either fish or crustacean fatty acid signatures. Stable isotope signatures of squid tissues clearly distinguished between animals feeding on different diets and supported findings from fatty acid analysis, thus indicating both methods to be viable tools in feeding studies on squid species.  相似文献

Abstract

The second species of the genus, Macroasteropteron chathamensis sp. nov. is described in the present paper. It was collected from 1000 m depth during the New Zealand national biodiversity programme Ocean Survey 20/20 to the Chatham Rise and the Challenger Plateau. To accommodate this genus, a new subfamily Macroasteropteroninae is described herein. It is defined by the following autapomorphies: locking system on the shell; very small second segment on the second antenna (bearing no dorsal bristles); square shaped third and fourth segments on the same appendage; absence of dorsal bristles on the third segment of the male clasping organ; reverse position of the alpha and beta bristles on the maxillula; almost square shaped skirt on the sixth limb; and a bulbous terminal part of the seventh limb, which, in addition, does not have any bell-bearing bristles. A key to the four subfamilies of Cylindroleberididae is provided.  相似文献

Specimens of the onychoteuthid squid Moroteuthis ingens were collected on the northwest Chatham Rise off the east coast of New Zealand during late June/early July 1997. Trawl depth ranged between 751 and 1,151 m. A total of 89 squid were captured (65 males, 24 females). Except for one immature (stage 2) female, all the individuals collected were either mature (stage 5) or spent (stage 6). There was no significant difference in testis weight between stage-5 and stage-6 males but there was a significant difference in mantle weight and total weight. There was also a significant difference in ovary weight and total weight between stage-5 and stage-6 females but no significant difference in mantle weight. Female fecundity ranged from 84,379 to 286,795 with a mean oocyte size of 2.1 mm. This study confirms that winter is a spawning period for M. ingens and that the Chatham Rise is a spawning region for this species. Accepted: 30 June 2000  相似文献
