It has been suggested that human scent works as a signal in mate selection, but the empirical evidence is scarce. Here, we examined whether women's olfactory preferences for a man's scent could be correlated with his testosterone, estradiol, or cortisol concentrations, and whether these preferences change along with the menstrual cycle. In line with previous studies, women in their most fertile period gave the highest attractiveness ratings to all men. However, the intensity ratings by women at different menstrual phases did not significantly differ statistically. Interestingly, we found that cortisol concentration in saliva correlated positively with the attractiveness but not with the intensity ratings of male T-shirt odor by all women's groups. However, neither testosterone nor estradiol was significantly associated with the ratings of attractiveness or intensity. Thus, our study suggests that there could be a novel mechanism for odor-based selection in humans.  相似文献

We examine the link between parental testosterone and children's perceptions of their relationship with their mother and father. Using data from 352 predominantly white working and middle class families, we find no direct link between mother's and father's testosterone and parent–child closeness. However, the association between mothers' testosterone and mother–child closeness appears to be influenced by the quality of two other family relationships. When father's marital satisfaction is low, mothers with high testosterone have a poorer relationship with their children. And, when fathers report low levels of intimacy with their children, high testosterone women have a poorer relationship with their children. No comparable associations were observed among fathers.  相似文献

It is well-established that males of many nonhuman vertebrate species exhibit hormonal reactions to stimuli from potential mates. The present studies were designed to test replication of preliminary findings suggesting that human males may exhibit such reactions as well. In Experiment 1, young men (n=115) provided saliva samples before and after either conversing with a woman confederate or sitting alone for 15 min. Changes from baseline in salivary testosterone concentrations were significantly greater among the men exposed to women, but only among subjects tested in the afternoon. In Experiment 2, male subjects (n=99) interacted with either a male or a female confederate with saliva samples collected before and after these interactions and all experimental sessions conducted in the afternoon. Men who interacted with women exhibited significant elevations of testosterone relative to both their own baseline concentrations and to change scores among the men who interacted with other men. In addition, women confederates' ratings of men's extraversion and degree of self-disclosure were positively correlated with changes in testosterone. In both experiments, furthermore, changes in cortisol concentrations from baseline were significantly greater among men who spoke with women relative to men in the control conditions. The results provide evidence that social interactions with potential mates can in fact trigger specific patterns of endocrine responses in human males.  相似文献

We investigated changes in antiphonal duetting with phases of reproduction and circulating levels of luteinizing hormone, testosterone, and estradiol in slate-colored boubous (Laniarius funebris) breeding in aviaries. Frequency of overall male singing did not vary with reproductive phase while frequencies of female singing and female vocal responses to male song were reduced during incubation and feeding of nestlings. This resulted in significant changes in frequency of duetting. Males sang the sexual song type M1 more often during courtship and nest building than during the nestlings phase. Their territorial song types M2 and M4 did not vary with breeding phase. Females were less responsive to M1 during incubation and to M2 during the nest building and nestlings than during the courtship phase. Plasma levels of luteinizing hormone and testosterone increased in males from the prebreeding to the courtship phase. While testosterone decreased already during nest building and remained low during subsequent phases of reproduction, luteinizing hormone decreased during incubation and feeding of nestlings. Female luteinizing hormone levels were highest during nest building. Female estradiol levels decreased from nest building to incubation and increased again during subsequent nest building. Female testosterone levels were low but not basal and did not vary with phase. Neither the overall male and female singing frequencies nor the frequencies of male song types were correlated with hormonal state. However, female participation in territorial duets M4 correlated positively with their testosterone levels. It is suggested that in this monogamous, duetting species with prolonged pairbonds behavioral cues between the mates are more important than the hormonal state in control of male and female singing.  相似文献

As evidence accumulates regarding the influence of hormones and stress-related conditions on maternal behavior, it becomes critical to better understand the relationship between physiological stress and the ability to cope with infants. Eight Japanese macaque females were observed 3 hr per week during the first 12 weeks after parturition; fecal samples were collected twice a week from each mother, starting 4 weeks before parturition and ending 4 weeks after parturition. Time spent in contact, maternal responsiveness, latency of response, and maternal rejection were measured and correlated with peripartum excreted cortisol and estradiol metabolite levels. Two indices of peripartum hormonal status were also tested against behavior: the postpartum stress index, and the postpartum cortisol/prepartum estradiol ratio (F/E). Postpartum cortisol levels showed a positive correlation with maternal rejection. The cortisol/estradiol ratio was positively correlated with rejection and latency of response, and negatively correlated with maternal responsiveness. Prepartum cortisol levels and the postpartum stress index did not correlate with any aspect of maternal behavior. Our findings suggest that hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity per se is not enough to predict the quality of interaction between mother and infant. Only when cortisol is high relative to estradiol could it be symptomatic of a possible negative feedback response involving stress, adrenal activity, and the ability of mothers to cope with the additional problems imposed by newborns.  相似文献

Microvascular vasodilation in humans can become impaired with age, leading to cardiovascular diseases ranging from mild to life-threatening. Reproductive hormones may confer some protection on the vascular system in women; however, it is unclear whether the same is true in men. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of four hormonal conditions (testosterone only, estradiol only, testosterone and estradiol, no testosterone and no estradiol) on microvascular vasodilator responsiveness in the skin of older men. We hypothesized that in older healthy men estradiol promotes cutaneous microvascular dilation during local warming of the skin and that testosterone inhibits this dilation. We measured skin blood flow using laser Doppler flowmetry during 35 min of cutaneous local warming to 42 degrees C in 52 healthy men (average age 67 +/- 1 yr). Subjects were randomized to one of the four hormonal conditions and were studied before and after hormone treatments. The endothelium-dependent vasodilator response to local warming was not different among groups either before or after hormone treatment. For example, with testosterone-only treatment this vasodilator response was 220 +/- 13 AU, and with estrogen only the response averaged 246 +/- 12 AU (P > 0.05). We conclude that, within the doses employed in the present study, testosterone and estradiol did not consistently alter cutaneous vasodilator responsiveness in healthy older men.  相似文献

This study documents the cortisol levels in the saliva of a bonobo group, especially that of a bonobo female which had given birth for the first time. During a long study in Zoological Garden Frankfurt, Germany, a bonobo baby was born on 3 August 2007. Due to the fission–fusion keeping system employed, the bonobos were divided into two groups on this day. Their behavior was observed regularly and saliva was also collected. The bonobos had been trained to chew cotton wool and to give back the samples. The cortisol response was tested twice a day before birth and three times on the day of parturition. Before birth, no observable indication behavior was seen, but an increase in the cortisol concentration of the expectant mother was found. Parturition occurred at 8 pm. The next morning, the group with the newborn was visibly more active, which correlated with the fact that their cortisol levels were increased in the morning in comparison to the second group. During the day, cortisol decreased in both groups, only it was higher throughout the day in the new mother. In the evening, the two groups showed nearly the same cortisol levels. These data indicate that there is indeed a relation between observable behavior and the cortisol level in bonobo saliva. Therefore, the cortisol level can be regarded as a suitable indicator for verifying behavioral events.  相似文献

Golden retriever muscular dystrophy (GRMD) provides the best animal model for characterizing the disease progress of the human disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The purpose of this study was to determine steroid hormone concentration profiles in healthy golden retriever dogs (control group - CtGR) versus GRMD-gene carrier (CaGR) and affected female dogs (AfCR). Therefore, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed and validated to determine the estradiol, progesterone, cortisol, and testosterone levels in the canine serum by isotope dilution liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). To more accurately understand the dynamic nature of the serum steroid profile, the fluctuating levels of these four steroid hormones over the estrous cycle were compared across the three experimental groups using a multivariate statistical analysis. The concentration profiles of estradiol, cortisol, progesterone, and testosterone revealed a characteristic pattern for each studied group at each specific estrous phase. Additionally, several important changes in the serum concentrations of cortisol and estradiol in the CaGR and AfCR groups seem to be correlated with the status and progression of the muscular dystrophy. A comprehensive and quantitative monitoring of steroid profiles throughout the estrous cycle of normal and GRMD dogs were achieved. Significant differences in these profiles were observed between GRMD and healthy animals, most notably for estradiol. These findings contribute to a better understanding of both dog reproduction and the muscular dystrophy pathology. Our data open new venues for hormonal behavior studies in dystrophinopathies and that may affect the quality of life of DMD patients.  相似文献

In cooperatively breeding meerkats (Suricata suricatta), individuals typically live in extended family groups in which the dominant male and female are the primary reproductives, while their offspring delay dispersal, seldom breed, and contribute to the care of subsequent litters. Here we investigate hormonal differences between dominants and subordinates by comparing plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol and cortisol in females, and testosterone and cortisol in males, while controlling for potential confounding factors. In both sexes, hormone levels are correlated with age. In females, levels of sex hormone also vary with body weight and access to unrelated breeding partners in the same group: subordinates in groups containing unrelated males have higher levels of LH and estradiol than those in groups containing related males only. When these effects are controlled, there are no rank-related differences in circulating levels of LH among females or testosterone among males. However, dominant females show higher levels of circulating estradiol than subordinates. Dominant males and females also have significantly higher cortisol levels than subordinates. Hence, we found no evidence that the lower levels of plasma estradiol in subordinate females were associated with high levels of glucocorticoids. These results indicate that future studies need to control for the potentially confounding effects of age, body weight, and access to unrelated breeding partners before concluding that there are fundamental physiological differences between dominant and subordinate group members.  相似文献

Hormonal differences between fathers and non-fathers may reflect an effect of paternal care on hormones. However, few studies have evaluated the hormonal responses of fathers after interacting with their offspring. Here we report results of a 30-minute in-home experiment in which Filipino fathers played with their toddlers and consider whether paternal experience and men's perceptions of themselves as fathers affect hormonal changes. Fathers provided saliva and dried blood spot samples at baseline (B) and 30 (P30) and 60 (P60, saliva only) minutes after the interaction. We tested whether testosterone (T), cortisol (CORT), and prolactin (PRL) shifted after the intervention. In the total sample, T did not vary over the study period, while CORT declined from B to P30 and P60, and PRL also declined from B to P30. Fathers who spent more time in daily caregiving and men who thought their spouses evaluated them positively as parental caregivers experienced a larger decline in PRL (B to P30) compared to other fathers. First-time fathers also had larger declines in PRL compared to experienced fathers. Experienced fathers also showed a greater decline in CORT (B to P60) compared to first-time fathers. These results suggest that males' paternal experience and age of offspring affect hormonal responses to father–child play and that there is a psychobiological connection between men's perceptions of themselves as fathers and their hormonal responsivity to childcare.  相似文献

The interrelations of blood rheology, plasma proteins and lipids, and steroid hormones (total testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol) were studied in athletes (N = 14). Blood (BV), plasma (PV), and erythrocyte suspension (ESV) viscosities; fibrinogen; total cholesterol (Ch); low density lipoprotein (LDL) Ch; and plasminogen activity were lower in the athletes than in control subjects (N = 10). The specific peripheral vascular resistance (SPVR) to BV ratio and PWC170 were lower in the athletes. All these parameters correlated with decreased estradiol. Discriminant analysis indicated PWC170, estradiol, and ESV to be the main parameters discriminating the groups. Decreased estradiol seemed to be associated with an increased physical activity in the athletes, as evident from its correlation with PWC170 and differences in the body composition (a correlation with the body mass index). No significant difference was found in total Ch and cortisol. However, in the combined sample, decreased testosterone was associated with decreased BV, which was explained by direct correlations of the hormone with hematocrit (Ht) and PV through relationships with Ch and triglycerides (TG). Increased cortisol correlated with the higher plasma fluidity in the athletes as a result of inverse correlations of the hormone with TG and the increased suspension stability of the blood. Training-induced changes in hormonal and metabolic parameters were assumed to play an important role in the regulation of blood fluidity in athletes.  相似文献

The effects of interracial crossing on the human sex ratio at birth were investigated using United States birth-certificate data for 1972-1979. The sex ratio was 1.059 for approximately 14 million singleton infants born to white couples, 1.033 for 2 million born to black couples, and 1.024 for 64,000 born to American Indian couples. Paternal and maternal race influences on the observed racial differences in sex ratio were analyzed using additional data on approximately 97,000 singleton infants born to white-black couples and 60,000 born to white-Indian couples. After adjustment for mother's race, white fathers had significantly more male offspring than did black fathers (ratio of sex ratios [RSR] = 1.027) and Indian fathers (RSR = 1.022). On the other hand, after adjustment for father's race, white mothers did not have more male offspring than did black mothers (RSR = 0.998) or Indian mothers (RSR = 1.009). The paternal-race effect persisted after adjustment for parental ages, education, birth order, and maternal marital status. The study shows that the observed racial differences in the sex ratio at birth are due to the effects of father's race and not the mother's. The study points to paternal determinants of the human sex ratio at fertilization and/or of the prenatal differential sex survival.  相似文献

In this study, we have evaluated the hypophyso-gonadal axis in three groups of men aged 60-69, 70-79 and 80-91 years by measuring the intratesticular concentrations of several steroids (pregnenolone, progesterone, DHEA, DHEA-S, testosterone, estradiol) and serum levels of FSH, LH, testosterone, estradiol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The histological examination of testes revealed normal spermatogenesis in all examined samples. No significant changes in serum hormone and SHBG concentrations as well as in testicular steroid contents among the three groups of patients were found. However, the mean serum SHBG level was three times higher in the oldest men than in other groups and a positive correlation between patient's age and serum SHBG was observed. Therefore, the bioavailability of estradiol in the oldest men was likely diminished. Consequently, the hormonal status in aged men is rather unchanged but great variations observed between patients imply special cautious when the SHBG and estradiol levels are concerned.  相似文献

In naturally cycling women, Roney and Simmons (2013) examined hormonal correlates of their desire for sexual contact. Estradiol was positively associated, and progesterone negatively associated, with self-reported desire. The current study extended these findings by examining, within a sample of 33 naturally cycling women involved in romantic relationships, hormonal correlates of sexual attraction to or interests in specific targets: women's own primary partner or men other than women's primary partner. Women's sexual interests and hormone (estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone) levels were assessed at two different time points. Whereas estradiol levels were associated with relatively greater extra-pair sexual interests than in-pair sexual interests, progesterone levels were associated with relatively greater in-pair sexual interests. Both hormones specifically predicted in-pair sexual desire, estradiol negatively and progesterone positively. These findings have implications for understanding the function of women's extended sexuality — their sexual proceptivity and receptivity outside the fertile phase, especially during the luteal phase.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of aerobic exercise training on saliva steroid hormones [i.?e., cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and testosterone], physical capacity, and quality of life in obese diabetic men. 8 abdominally obese type 2 diabetic men (59.5±1.7 years old, BMI=35.5±1.6?kg/m(2), waist circumference=119.4±3.3?cm) and 9 healthy men (57.4±1.5 years old, BMI=24.5±0.8?kg/m(2), waist circumference=92.3±1.9?cm) participated in the study. The obese diabetic men underwent 8 weeks of aerobic exercise training: twice a week 45?min sessions at 75% of peak heart rate and once a week 45?min session of intermittent exercise. Before and after training, steroid hormone concentrations were analyzed from saliva samples, physical capacity was assessed by the 6-minute walking test, and quality of life was estimated by a specific questionnaire for obese subjects. These data were compared with the data from the healthy untrained men. The basal saliva DHEA and testosterone concentrations, physical capacity, and quality of life scores of the obese diabetic men were significantly lower than those of the healthy men. Aerobic training induces a significant increase in the 6-min walking distance and improve the psychosocial impact dimension of quality of life, without modifying significantly any other parameter investigated. These data suggest that an 8-week aerobic exercise program improves physical capacity and quality of life in obese diabetic men, but was insufficient to correct the anthropometric and hormonal alterations observed in this population.  相似文献

A contribution to a special issue on Hormones and Human Competition.Testosterone is theorized to influence status-seeking behaviors such as social dominance and competitive behavior, but supporting evidence is mixed. The present study tested the roles of testosterone and cortisol in the hawk-dove game, a dyadic economic decision-making paradigm in which earnings depend on one's own and the other player's choices. If one person selects the hawk strategy and the other person selects the dove strategy, the player who selected hawk attains a greater financial pay-off (status differentiation). The worst financial outcome occurs when both players choose the hawk strategy (status confrontation). Ninety-eight undergraduate students (42 men) provided saliva samples and played ten rounds of the hawk-dove game with another same-sex participant. In support of the hypothesis that testosterone is related to status concern, individuals higher in basal testosterone made more hawk decisions — decisions that harmed the other player. Acute decreases in cortisol were also associated with more hawk decisions. There was some empirical support for the dual-hormone hypothesis as well: basal testosterone was positively related to satisfaction in the game among low basal-cortisol individuals but not among high basal-cortisol individuals. There were no significant sex differences in these hormonal effects. The present findings align with theories of hormones and status-seeking behavior at the individual level, but they also open up new avenues for research on hormone profiles at the collective level. Our results suggest that the presence of two or more high-testosterone members increases the likelihood of status confrontations over a limited resource that can undermine collective outcomes.  相似文献

The transition to parenthood has been associated with declines in testosterone among partnered fathers, which may reflect males' motivation to invest in the family. Moreover, preliminary evidence has found that couples show correlations in hormone levels across pregnancy that may also be linked to fathers' preparation for parenthood. The current study used repeated-measures sampling of testosterone across pregnancy to explore whether fathers' change in T, and correlations with mothers' T, were associated with fathers' and mothers' postpartum investment. In a sample of 27 couples (54 individuals) expecting their first child, both parents' salivary testosterone was measured multiple times across pregnancy. At approximately 3.5 months postpartum, participants rated their investment, commitment, and satisfaction with their partner. A multilevel model was used to measure change in testosterone over time and associations between mother and father testosterone. Fathers who showed stronger declines in T across pregnancy, and stronger correlations with mothers' testosterone, reported higher postpartum investment, commitment, and satisfaction. Mothers reported more postpartum investment and satisfaction if fathers showed greater prenatal declines in T. These results held even after controlling for paternal investment, commitment, and satisfaction measured prenatally at study entry. Our results suggest that changes in paternal testosterone across pregnancy, and hormonal linkage with the pregnant partner, may underlie fathers' dedication to the partner relationship across the transition to parenthood.  相似文献

The differences observed between plasma free and saliva testosterone levels do not result from methodological artefacts. We postulate that androgens metabolism in salivary glands modulates saliva testosterone levels both in men and women. In women, the "excess" of saliva testosterone (compared to the calculated free testosterone concentration), could be due to conversion of androstenedione in the salivary glands. The rate of this transformation is exaggerated in hirsute patients resulting in a significantly higher excess of saliva testosterone. In men, on the contrary, a "deficit" in saliva testosterone is observed suggesting testosterone transformation in salivary glands. This deficit is more marked in impotent men and appears to be reversed by testosterone administration. Saliva testosterone levels do not merely reflect plasma free hormone concentrations but also afford potentially useful information on androgens metabolism.  相似文献

This study examines the family environments and hormone profiles of 316 individuals aged 2 months-58 years residing in a rural village on the east coast of Dominica, a former British colony in the West Indies. Fieldwork was conducted over an eight-year period (1988–1995). Research methods and techniques include radioimmunoassay of cortisol and testosterone from saliva samples (N=22,340), residence histories, behavioral observations of family interactions, extensive ethnographic interview and participant observation, psychological questionnaires, and medical examinations. Analyses of data indicate complex, sex-specific effects of family environment on endocrine function. Male endocrine profiles exhibit greater sensitivity to presence of father than do female endocrine profiles. Father-absent males tend to have (a) low cortisol levels during infancy, (b) high or abnormal cortisol profiles during childhood and adolescence, and (c) high cortisol and low testosterone levels during adulthood compared with those of males raised with a resident father. These results indicate that early family environment has significant effects on endocrine response throughout male life histories. Mark V.
