Neem oil deterred feeding by pear sawfly, Caliroa cerasi L., larvae (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), both in choice and in no-choice cherry leaf disk bioassays. Deterrence was greater in the choice tests, with 50% inhibition occurring at 0.49% aqueous neem oil compared with 1.11% in the no-choice tests. Antifeedant activity towards pear sawfly larvae is slightly less than has been observed for Lepidoptera, but is higher than deterrence to other insects such as aphids. Topical application of neem oil to sawfly larvae resulted in reduced feeding, increased mortality, and a trend towards slower development. Most larval mortality after neem treatment resulted from incomplete subsequent moults. The potential utilization of neem insecticides for control of pear sawfly in tree fruit pest management is discussed.

Sensitivity of the cabbage butterfly,Pieris rapae L. to feeding deterrents was compared for larvae reared on different food sources under laboratory conditions. Since cabbage-reared larvae normally reject nasturtium,Tropaeolum majus L., the effects of previous exposure to allelochemicals on larval acceptance or rejection of this plant were also examined. When compared with cabbage-reared larvae, nasturtium-reared larvae were less sensitive to feeding deterrents including cymarin, erysimoside and 2-O-β-d-glucosyl cucurbitacin E. Nasturtium-reared larvae were insensitive to chlorogenic acid, which was deterrent to cabbage-reared larvae. Feeding by larvae reared on a wheat germ diet was not deterred by these compounds. The results indicate that dietary experience can extensively affect larval sensitivity to feeding deterrents and that cross habituation of larvae to deterrents occurs in response to certain chemical constituents of nasturtium and wheat germ diet. Digitoxin, however, proved to be an exception. Larvae reared on either nasturtium or wheat germ diet were as sensitive to digitoxin as those reared on cabbage. Previous results have shown that rejectionof nasturtium by cabbage-reared larvae is due to the presence of strong feeding deterrents in this plant. However, more than 50% of 2nd instar larvae reared from neonate on cabbage leaves treated with strophanthidin, cymarin, erysimoside, digitoxigenin and digitoxin accepted nasturtium as a food source. 2-O-β-d-glucosyl cucurbitacin E, 2-O-β-d-glucosyl cucurbitacin I and rutin were also active in causing larvae to feed on nasturtium. Thus dietary exposure to unrelated plant chemicals can profoundly affect insect acceptance of a plant that contains feeding deterrents.

Mature unfertilized eggs (oocytes) dissected from the ovary of the sawfly Athalia rosae (Hymenoptera) begin parthenogenetic development if exposed to distilled water and produce haploid males. Injection of sperm into mature oocytes through the anterior pole resulted in karyogamy in a fraction of cases which developed as diploid females. No haploid-haploid chimeras due to independent participation of the injected sperm in development were produced. When sperm were injected through the posterior pole, however, fertilization never occurred but haploid-haploid chimeras were produced in a smaller fraction of cases. Both egg nucleus-derived and injected sperm-derived nuclei contributed in forming the germ cells of the chimeric males.

Summary Mature eggs dissected from ovaries of unmated females of Athalia rosae (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), if placed on a filter-paper soaked with distilled water, are activated and develop to haploid males. Occasionally, however, diploid females develop from these artificially activated eggs. Treatment of mature unfertilized eggs dissected from diploid females with ice-cold temperatures immediately before activation and with a high temperature (36° C) upon and immediately after activation resulted in the production of diploid males, diploid females, triploid females and gynandromorphs at high frequency. The same treatment of mature unfertilized eggs dissected from triploid females resulted in the production of only triploid survivors. These results, together with the results on the segregation of a marker mutation, yellow fatbody (yfb), appear to indicate that meiotic divisions were complete in the treated eggs, and that all four nuclei became potentially capable of participating in development with or without automictic fusion.Studies on the sawfly, Athalia rosae (Insecta, Hymenoptera, Tenthredinidae), part V

Host plant relations of the monophagous weevil Ceutorhynchus constrictus Marsh. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Ceutorhynchinae) feeding on garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata (Bieb.) Cavara & Grande (Cruciferae) were studied in the laboratory. Most other crucifers were rejected in choice tests using garlic mustard as a reference plant, but Brassica nigra, Sinapis alba and Thlaspi arvense were as acceptable as the host plant. Flowering plants of Descurainia sophia were acceptable while young plants of this species were not. The most important feeding stimulants in extracts of garlic mustard were uncharged, water soluble compounds. The most abundant glucosinolate in garlic mustard, sinigrin, was a feeding stimulant, too. However, the feeding stimulatory activity of sinigrin was only expressed in the presence of still unidentified uncharged compounds from garlic mustard leaves. Host plant relations in monophagous crucifer-feeding insects is discussed in relation to the distinctness of glucosinolate patterns found in their host plants.

Induction of plant allelochemicals is of particular ecological importance for interactions with herbivores that can make use of induced metabolites by incorporating them for their own defence. Induction patterns in white mustard, Sinapis alba, were investigated following herbivory of the turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae, which sequesters plant glucosinolates. Larvae of different age were allowed to feed for 24 h on young leaves of premature, non-flowering plants. Changes in primary and secondary metabolites were recorded in the damaged leaves (local) and in the adjacent leaves and stems (systemic) for several days. Organ- and time-specific patterns were evident. Local responses included increases in glucosinolate concentrations, soluble and insoluble myrosinase activity and glucose levels, while systemic responses in leaves were restricted to increases in myrosinase activities and glucose. All effects were strongest immediately after feeding and declined mostly within a day. Stems had overall lower constitutive levels of glucosinolates and myrosinase activities than leaves. Feeding by one large larva had a greater impact on the plant's physiology than feeding by three small ones, even though both treatments resulted in quantitatively similar leaf destruction. Local increase in glucosinolate concentration could be beneficial for larvae, while conspecifics feeding on induced adjacent leaves might be negatively affected due to higher myrosinase activity levels. The results are discussed in the context of the ‘optimal defence theory’ and the ‘lethal plant defence paradox’.

The sawfly Rhadinoceraea nodicornis Konow (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) is a member of a closely related group of species, the tribe Phymatocerini, which feed on the Liliales and Ranunculales. It is known to sequester steroid alkaloids from its host plants, species in the genus Veratrum (Liliales: Melanthiaceae), and to use them as a defence against predators. There are known chemical relationships between the hosts of R. nodicornis and hosts of related sawfly species. We tested whether the R. nodicornis larvae would accept hosts of closely- and more distantly-related sawflies, but found that they accepted only plant species in the genus Veratrum. This specificity was apparently innate, as it was independent of early larval experience. A feeding bioassay showed that the steroid alkaloids from Veratrum nigrum were phagostimulatory for R. nodicornis larvae, suggesting that they may be involved in host recognition. We discuss the possibility that the evolution of recognition of specific compounds may represent the mechanism of host radiation within the Phymatocerini.

Workers have control over queen movement between cells, encouraging small groups of queens to join together to form a larger one. Single queens are more easily monoeuvred by the workers, compared to a group of queens, due to the loose arrangement of the workers surrounding the queen. Workers clustering around many queens are tightly compacted together, but are less compressed around a single queen. Some of the workers initiate colony activity by circulating each nest in an erratic, jerky manner and entering a cluster which is broken up as a result of the disturbance. The effects of worker/queen interactions in a natural nest are discussed.

Host preferences in both sexes of Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier (Jaguariuna biotype) and Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier (Formosa biotype) and their relative attraction to the imported fire ants (IFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren (red IFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel (black IFA) and S. invicta × S. richteri hybrids (hybrid IFA) were investigated in two separate experiments utilizing multiple choice flight bioassays. The results of both experiments clearly showed that both sexes of the Jaguariuna biotype of P. tricuspis could distinguish among the three IFA species and demonstrated greater preference for hybrid IFA and red IFA. This conclusion is supported by a variety of data collected on the number of fly visits, attack rate, and hovering duration (Experiment 1), and on the number of trapped flies (Experiment 2), which showed that black IFA is the least preferred of the three species. Similar results were recorded for the Formosan biotype of P. curvatus, although the data were not as strongly conclusive. Females of this biotype spent a significantly greater amount of time in hovering mode over red IFA and hybrid IFA compared to black IFA, but the other data were not significant. The red IFA is the natural host of both phorid fly biotypes and our results suggest that both biotypes may have evolved a specialized relationship with red IFA including an ability to discriminate it from related fire ants. These results are discussed in relation to the possible role of fire ant chemicals in mediating host preferences in phorid flies, contributions of male phorid flies to fire ant biocontrol, and the practical implications of the key findings.

The relative suitability of four plants was studied for larvae of Pieris rapae L. and its parasitoid Cotesia rubecula (Marshall). For unparasitized P. rapae, pupal dry weight and egg-pupa growth rate were higher on cabbage, radish and nasturtium than on Indian hedge mustard. Larval developmental rate and size were greatest for C. rubecula when its host was feeding on nasturtium. Wasp survival was not affected by the host insect/plant combination in which the parasitoid developed. These results indicate that the plant on which host larvae feed is an important factor in development of the parasitoid.

The cDNA of a decapentaplegic (dpp) orthologue from the sawfly, Athalia rosae (Hymenoptera), was cloned and characterized. The clone (Ar dpp) was 2,566 bp long and encoded 395 amino acids in a single open reading frame. Genomic Southern blotting showed that Ar dpp is a single copy gene. The deduced amino acid sequence can be aligned along its entire length with known insect DPPs. It shared common characteristics such as a signal sequence, a pro-domain region, and a ligand domain with seven cysteines at conserved locations. Ar dpp was expressed as a single 5.0-kb mRNA in embryos, larvae, pupae and adults. In situ hybridization showed that Ar dpp was expressed in the dorsal region proper in early embryonic stages and in the embryonic appendages of cephalic segments (labrum, antenna, mandible, maxilla, and labium), thoracic segments (thoracic legs), and all abdominal segments except the tenth segment (pleuropodia and proleg primordia). The present results indicate that Ar dpp expression reflects the primary determination of embryonic appendages.Edited by D. Pieris rapae (L.) oviposited readily on paper wetted with sinigrin solution, if it was yellow, green, light blue or white, but not if violet, red, or black. On violet discs, feeding responses distracted the butterflies from oviposition and they often laid on neighbouring green discs which lacked sinigrin. When some discs with water and others with sinigrin solution were offered together, butterflies oviposited more on water discs of the same colour as the sinigrin discs, as opposed to those of a different colour. Within a range of sinigrin solutions tested (10–1000 ppm) the higher concentrations elicited most oviposition. Preference was slight for different concentrations applied to physically identical discs, but marked for the higher of two concentrations (100 vs 75 ppm) on discs of different but equally acceptable appearance. It was concluded that by trial-and-error, ovipositing butterflies learnt to associate the appearance of the oviposition site with its contact chemical stimuli, and that learning either increased or decreased the specificity of responses to sinigrin-treated discs, according to the design of the assay. Learning influenced preference differently in butterflies offered two as opposed to three kinds of acceptable site.

Extracts from 78 plant species (24 families) were screened for antifeedant activity against the corn wireworm, Melanotus communis Gyll. (Coleoptera: Elateridae). Five extracts from four families significantly reduced wireworm feeding damage in a series of choice feeding tests. Two extracts, Asclepias tuberosa and Hedera helix, exhibited exceptional levels of feeding deterrency. An x-ray technique indicated that wireworms burrowed indiscriminately between soil containing either of these extracts and surrounding untreated soil, but were found more frequently in the untreated areas.

The quantitative relationship between chemoreceptor activity during food intake and total amount of food ingested per unit of time has been studied in last instar larvae of Pieris brassicae. Data on sensory responses and feeding intensity, derived from a study by Blom (1978), show a strong correlation between receptor activity during 1 sec periods of stimulation and food intake during 24 h. It is concluded that nerve impulses from chemoreceptors, which signal the presence of different phagostimulants, are summated algebraically in the central nervous system. Impulses from feeding deterrent receptors counteract the effects of phagostimulants. One impulse from a deterrent receptor neutralizes 2.5 impulses from phagostimulant receptors. Based on the relationships observed a simple model of a feeding centre in the central nervous system has been constructed (Fig. 8).

Induced plant responses may affect the behaviour and growth of the attacking herbivore insect. The aphid Sipha flava (Forbes) produces reddish spots on the infested leaf of its host plant Sorghum halepense (L.). In order to assess the consequences on the aphid of this presumptive induced plant response, we studied the feeding behaviour and growth of S. flava on previously infested and non-infested leaves of S. halepense. Considering that the reddish pigment could play a defensive role, its effect on aphid survival was determined in artificial diets. In addition, changes in the histology of the leaf and the chemical nature of the induced pigment were also studied. Aphids devoted a significantly shorter total time to non-penetration activities in infested than in non-infested leaves. Time before the first phloem ingestion tended to be shorter in infested leaves. The mean relative growth rate of S. flava nymphs was significantly higher on infested than on non-infested leaves. Survival of aphids on diet containing the reddish extract was not significantly different from that on the control diet. Infestation of S. halepense by S. flava produced a reddish coloration in the leaf, which was identified as an anthocyanin by UV-visible spectrometry. Light microscopy showed that only mesophyll cells of previously infested plants presented swelled, dispersed, and heterogeneously stained chloroplasts with a higher accumulation of starch granules, no grana arranged in stacks, and reduction in the amount of inner membranes (thylakoids), relatively to chloroplasts of non-infested leaves. Scanning electron micrographs of leaf surface revealed reduced presence of crystalline epicuticular waxes of epidermal cells in infested leaves as compared to non-infested ones. The main conclusion is that the attack of S. flava to S. halepense leaves induced plant susceptibility where aphid feeding behaviour and growth were both enhanced on previously infested leaves.

Alkaloid extractables of Tylophora asthmatica (Asclepiadaceae) have been tested for the antifeedant activity against Spodoptera litura by incorporating them in semisynthetic and cellulose diets. The alkaloid extractables at 0.01% concentration inhibited feeding of the larvae. Three compounds, tylophorine, tylophorinine and pergularinine, were isolated; and their EC50 values were found to be 2.9, 8.6 and 12.00 ppm, respectively.

We investigated host race formation in Galerucella tenella, a leaf beetle which feeds preferentially on meadowsweet (Rosaceae) in its natural habitats, but has become an important pest on strawberry (Rosaceae) in agricultural areas. Beetles from two isolated sites (Skeppsvik in Sweden and Solf in Finland) were compared with respect to preference and performance. At Skeppsvik the beetles were found feeding on meadowsweet, while at Solf large populations only develop in strawberry plantations, despite the presence of meadowsweet. In reciprocal field transplantations and laboratory bioassays, beetles from both sites discriminated against their foreign host, using their natal plant to a significantly higher degree for both egg laying and feeding, but with one interesting exception, namely that beetles from Solf increased their use of and even preferred meadowsweet for feeding in the laboratory. This increased use of meadowsweet by adult Solf beetles in the laboratory (without conspecific competitors) may be attributed to a density-dependent strategy, whereby mothers avoid pre-emptying the nutritional resources of the plants that will host their offspring in cases where no competitors are present.Larval fitness did not differ significantly between host plants, although larval survival of Solf beetles was halved when reared on their non-natal host plant (meadowsweet). Although beetles from both sites preferred to oviposit on their local host plant, our results provide little evidence that this presumed adaptation has to do with the nutritional quality of the plants involved. Instead, we suggest that other factors associated with the plants, such as enemy-free space and resistance to drought may be more important selective agents, shaping host preference in the field.

We investigated if (1) dissolved compounds excreted by Phaeocystis globosa and (2) transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) formed from carbohydrates excreted into the water affect the feeding of nauplii and females of the calanoid copepod Temora longicornis during a P. globosa bloom. Copepod grazing on the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii in the presence of these possible grazing deterrents was measured during three successive weeks of a mesocosm study, simulating the development of a P. globosa bloom. Our results demonstrate no indication for the presence of feeding deterrents in the dissolved phase, but a strong inhibitory effect of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) on the consumption of algae by both nauplii and adult copepods. The inhibitory effect of TEP was connected to the accumulation of DOM during the progress of the bloom. We suggest that a reduction in the grazing pressure of zooplankton may increase the survival of the liberated single cells during disruption of colonies and allow seeding populations to persist. Furthermore, P. globosa reduces the trophic efficiency of the food web not only by withdrawal of its colonies from grazing but also by a relaxation of the grazing pressure on co-occurring phytoplankton and by alteration of the food web structure via TEP production.

Elevated levels of tropospheric ozone and their effects on plants have been studied for a great number of years. Ozone is a gaseous pollutant and acts as a phytotoxin. Even though ozone is known to change the physiology of plants, little attention has been given to the indirect effects of ozone on plant-insect interactions. This paper addresses this question by investigating the interactive effects of ozone and plant genotype on insects. Lines of rapid-cycling Brassica rapa (L.) selected for their contrasting sensitivity to ozone and Pieris brassicae (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) were used as a model system. The effect of differences in ozone sensitivity and ozone fumigation on the plant's carbon and nitrogen pools, the feeding preference, and behaviour of P. brassicae larvae were investigated. The results show that the plant's susceptibility to ozone interacts in a complex way with ozone induced alterations in the suitability of the plant for the insect. Only the larval performance on the sensitive line was affected by ozone exposure. Biochemical changes in the resistant B. rapa line made the plant a better food source for the insects, since the digestibility of this plant was significantly higher than that of the sensitive line, and the larvae pupated more quickly and were heavier.
